A Word About Our Performance Venues The Desert Chorale has the privilege of performing in some of the most beautiful and historic venues in New Mexico that provide the acoustic quality needed for excellent choral performances. While many of the venues and the music we sing represent specific religious or cultural traditions, we celebrate the diversity of faith, thought, artistry, and human experiences represented by the music performed in these spaces. We hope that this shared musical experience transcends and binds the audience, as we seek to be inspired by the power of great choral music.

ABOUT THE SANTA FE DESERT CHORALE Founded in 1982 by Lawrence “Larry” Bandfield, the Santa Fe Desert Chorale is one of the longest continually performing professional music organizations in New Mexico, as well as one of the most distinguished. In his review of the “American Voices” program, Scott Cantrell of The Dallas Morning News wrote “The variety certainly displayed the ensemble’s impressive versatility. Habermann consistently got vivid performances, introspective music elegantly colored and shaped, extrovert fare delivered with great pizzazz. Individual singers got lots of solo exposure.” Now in his eleventh season, Artistic Director Joshua Habermann leads the Chorale in repertoire spanning seven centuries, from early polyphony to contemporary works. The composition of the Chorale is truly national in scope and the ensemble is recognized as one of the finest American chamber choirs. A recent highlight was an invitational appearance at the American Choral Directors Association National Conference, which was later broadcast by Minnesota Public Radio. In the 2017- 2018 season, the Chorale toured to Chicago, Dallas, Fort Worth, Los Angeles, and Oklahoma City, and presented regular winter and summer seasons in New Mexico. Now in its 37th year, the Desert Chorale summer festival season is a centerpiece of the cultural life of Santa Fe, and among the nation’s most significant choral events. The Chorale’s first commercial release, The Road Home, launched at No. 3 on the Billboard Classical Chart following a soldout CD Launch program in Santa Fe. Throughout its history, the Chorale has maintained a commitment to give voice to music from Hispanic and Native American communities. Dedicated to 4 SANTA FE DESERT CHORALE

advancing the composers of our time, the Chorale has commissioned 23 works by 19 composers; three-quarters of the composers commissioned have been American. In addition, another seven works have been given their world or American premieres by the Santa Fe Desert Chorale. The ensemble performs at historical sites in Santa Fe such as the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi and Loretto Chapel, as well as other venues throughout the Southwest. The Desert Chorale prides itself on its strong relationships within the community of Northern New Mexico, and enjoys collaborations with the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, Museum of International Folk Art, Museum of Spanish Colonial Art, New Mexico History Museum, Performance Santa Fe, Santa Fe Botanical Garden, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Santa Fe Pro Musica, Santa Fe Opera, and Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, among others. Community Engagement programming partners the Chorale with other musical, artistic, social services, and educational organizations in Santa Fe and on tour. Other important goals include fostering the next generation of singers and arts administrators.

Dear Friends, The New Mexico True tourism campaign promotes Santa Fe as “the destination that feeds the soul and energizes the spirit.” With the abundant and rich musical offerings available, we couldn’t agree more. At the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, we are pleased to kick off our 2019 programming, Illumination, with performances of Illuminating the Dome, scheduled in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Dallas, Texas. The program features repertoire from the a cappella Orthodox tradition, with works emanating from Estonia, Finland, and Russia. We also revisit British Composer Ivan Moody’s Aflame, commissioned by the Chorale and premiered in 2015. As the year unfolds, we will be presenting four more programs aligned under the Illumination theme: In the Court of the Sun King: Shining a Light on the French Baroque; Luminosity: The Nature of Celestial Light; and “The long-enduring pensive moons”: A Bicentenary Celebration of Walk Whitman and Other Esteemed American Poets. Please don’t miss our new mid-day vocal chamber series, and late-night jazz appearances with the Bert Dalton Trio. Our Winter Festival, Sacred Fire: The Celtic Tradition, takes place in three counties in New Mexico and culminates with sure to be sold-out concerts at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi adjoining the brightly festooned Santa Fe Plaza. Aflame, in our spring concert, is but one of the Santa Fe Desert Chorale’s commissioned works programmed this year, as the Chorale continues its long-standing tradition of both expanding the choral repertoire and recognizing Hispanic and Native American Voices. Composer Paul John Rudoi has set to music Francisco X. Alarcón’s poem “Canto,” which will be premiered by the Chorale on Sunday, July 28th – our 23rd commission.

The wide-range of repertoire programmed by Joshua Habermann also provides an opportunity for exploration of related topics through our Insights & Sounds series. We can be found in the community with programming ranging from glass-blowing workshops at Master Artist Elodie Holmes’ Liquid Light Glass to an Earth, Moon, and Sun program at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Sciences’ Planetarium in Albuquerque – and much more in between. The fourth annual Santa Fe Sings!, sponsored by Stephen and Jane Hochberg, will take place on Saturday, May 18th under the direction of Artistic Director Joshua Habermann. You are invited to join us for a joyful day of fellowship and choral music-making by avocational singers ranging from eighth graders to octogenarians. Registration is now open at desertchorale.org. And our commitment to offer arts access to those who do not otherwise have the opportunity to hear and participate in music continues with our weekly “Hearts in Harmony” choral sessions at the Interfaith Community Shelter in Santa Fe. If one were to compile a list of the greatest major a cappella (without accompaniment) traditions there would surely be lively debate, but one point would likely be uncontroversial: music for the Eastern Orthodox Church would rank at or near the top. For sheer sonority there is perhaps no other choral repertoire that can compare to it. Though largely associated with Russian singing traditions, Orthodox music extends as far and wide as there are communities of believers, with significant populations in the Baltic and Balkan countries, the United Kingdom, and North America. Today’s concert reflects that breadth, with composers from the Russian Orthodox tradition (Gretchaninov, Rachmaninov, and Tchaikovsky) joined by the Estonian Cyrillus Kreek, the Finn Einojuhani Rautavaara, and British composers John Tavener and Ivan Moody. Cyrillus Kreek, whose two psalm settings open the program, was fascinated with the folk traditions of his homeland, and he traveled throughout Estonia collecting melodies sung in the countryside for private and public devotions. The high quality of Kreek’s reworkings of these melodies is a testament to his ability to create moments of great beauty from simple materials. Although it is popular within Russia, Georgy Sviridov’s music is not heard often outside his native country. Sviridov was drawn to sacred themes. In many ways his music hearkens to pre-revolutionary days and the height of Russian sacred choral composition. We can experience this link as we hear his Inexpressible Wonder paired with the famous Svete Tihiy (Gladsome Light) of Gretchaninov. Though the composers come from two very different political realities, their shared sense of mystery and awe bridges the gap between pre- and post-revolutionary Russia. Throughout its history, Russia has gone through cycles of attraction to, as well as rejection of, Western ideals. During the reign of Catherine the Great, the Russian elite embraced many Enlightenment ideals and opened the country to Western influences. Under Catherine, the Italian Baldassare Galuppi served as music master of the Imperial Chapel and Dmitri Bortniansky sang as a boy under Galuppi’s tutelage. When Galuppi returned to Italy, he took the young budding composer with him, and Bortniansky 8 SANTA FE DESERT CHORALE

absorbed Italian musical culture, bringing it back with him on his return to Russia. Ultimately Bortniansky landed a job at the Imperial Chapel, where he was the first native composer appointed director of the choir. Bortniansky’s greatest contributions are his choral concertos, multi-sectional works that combined the Russian practice of a cappella performance with classicalera Italian harmonic language. He wrote 45 choral concertos, 35 for four voices, and ten for double choir that reflect the Venetian multiple choirs practice associated with St. Mark’s. The concerto we hear on today’s program, Come Behold the Works of the Lord, is one of his most ambitious, for eight voices and soloists in two equal choirs. Finland is home to a small Orthodox population, centered largely around the Uspenski Catehdral in Helsinki. The Cathedral, in partnership with the Helsinki Festival, commissioned Einojuhani Rautavaara, who was then the most recognized Finnish composer since Jean Sibelius, to write a full-length All Night Vigil service. The first, and thus far only setting of the All Night Vigil in Finnish, Vigilia had its premiere in 1971. Rautavaara consciously divorces himself from a romanticized 19th-century language in favor of a more ascetic and mystical approach based on Byzantine models. The three movements we excerpt in these performances display Rautavaara at his best: clear, incisive, and breathtaking changes of harmony combined with modern choral techniques, including massive sliding chords in Psalm of Invocation. Rachmaninov’s All Night Vigil Op. 37 owes its existence in part to a happy historical coincidence. Just as Rachmaninov was reaching his full compositional powers, so too was the Moscow Synodal Choir entering its glory days. Leading figures such as Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov wrote significant works for them, so that by the time Rachmaninov’s All Night Vigil was completed in 1915, the choir was a seasoned professional ensemble capable of music of great complexity. Sadly, this relationship was to come to an end shortly with the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, when the Synodal Choir and School were disbanded. Rachmaninov wrote no further sacred choral works.

The “Vigil” requires singers capable of sustaining long, arching lines and extreme vocal ranges. The most famous of course are the basses; Rachmaninov requires them to sing, well below the typical bass range. Listen for these “sub-woofers” throughout the three movements excerpted for this concert. No. 6 - This famous movement, which is often excerpted, is the Orthodox equivalent of the Ave Maria of the Roman church. In the central section, the altos, divided in two, sing a sweetly undulating melody, accompanied by sopranos and tenors in octaves. The end of this movement marks the end of the “Vespers” section of the All Night Vigil. No. 12 - For length and complexity this is one of the richest movements in the All Night Vigil. Beginning with a chant which he continually varies and transforms over seven intense minutes, Rachmaninov creates a mini-concerto with moments of hushed wonder and religious fervor. No. 15 - The All Night Vigil ends with a final hymn to the Virgin, set in a brilliant C Major to contrast the prevailing modality of the work. In the final measures, Rachmaninov introduces leaping arpeggios that are atypical of the normal stepwise motion of Russian chant, and bring the All Night Vigil to a vigorous conclusion. In 2015, the Desert Chorale engaged Father Ivan Moody, a composer and orthodox priest, to write a piece for the closing concert of their summer festival. With the performances taking place at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis, Fr. Moody chose St. Francis as his subject, and produced Aflame, which was warmly received by singers and audiences alike. We are pleased to bring it back for these performances alongside John Tavener’s Hymn to the Mother of God. Tavener and Moody, well-known to each other and both members of the British Orthodox community, shared a similar ethos in which simple lines interwoven with consummate skill, create massive waves of sound. Though Tchaikovsky offers well-loved sacred music, it is his folk style that is on display in two popular part songs: The Nightingale and A Little Golden Cloud. Despite their secular nature, these songs, with their depth of feeling and sincerity, are consistent with the aesthetic of the sacred music that precedes them. A more decidedly light-hearted arrangement, Oh How Full is My Basket, brings the concert to a joyful conclusion. — Joshua Habermann

The Santa Fe Desert Chorale

honors the rich choral tradition extending over five centuries in its concert performances and expands the choral canon by commissioning new works by leading composers of today. Joshua Habermann, Artistic Director, is in his eleventh season with the Santa Fe Desert Chorale. Since joining the Chorale he has raised the ensemble’s artistic profile and broadened its programming to include choral-orchestral masterworks as well as cutting-edge a cappella programs. Having joined the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in 2011, Joshua Habermann has held the Jean D. Wilson Chorus Director Chair since 2015. The Dallas Symphony Chorus is the official vocal ensemble of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. As Director, he prepares the 200-voice chorus for classical and pops series concerts. Highlights with the DSO include performances of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion BWV 244, Verdi’s Requiem, Berlioz’ Te Deum H118, and Britten’s War Requiem Op. 66, which was performed for the national meeting of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) in 2013. In demand for honors choirs, choral festivals, choral institutes, and workshops worldwide, recently Joshua Habermann traveled to Thailand for an eight-day residency under the auspices of ACDA Abroad, which is an initiative through which choral leaders lead workshops and training courses in the developing world. Hosted by the Thai Ministry of Education, this was his first return to Thailand where he was an English teacher (1990-1991). From 2008 to 2011 Joshua Habermann was Director of Choral Studies at the University of Miami Frost School of Music, where he led the graduate program in conducting and directed the Frost Chorale. Notable projects in Miami included an appearance at the Florida Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association convention, and collaborations with the New World Symphony and conductor Michael Tilson Thomas in music of Ives, Schubert, and Beethoven. During this

same period, Joshua Habermann led the Master Chorale of South Florida in performances of masterworks such as Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Haydn’s Creation Hob. XX1: 2, and Mozart’s Requiem in D minor, K-626. From 1996-2008 he was Assistant Conductor of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, and Professor of Music at San Francisco State University, where under his direction the SFSU Chamber Singers undertook international engagements in Havana, Cuba, and concert tours in Germany, the Czech Republic, and China. In 2006 he led a collaboration between the SFSU Chamber Singers and the Orchestre des Jeunes de la Méditerranée in music of Poulenc and the Requiem of Maurice Duruflé in concerts throughout France. National invitations include the Waging Peace Festival in Eugene (OR), multiple appearances at the California Music Educators Convention, and an appearance at the American Choral Directors Association regional convention in 2008. As a singer (tenor) he has performed with the Oregon Bach Festival Chorus (Eugene, OR) and Conspirare (Austin, TX). Recording credits include three projects with Conspirare:Through the Green Fuse; Requiem, a GRAMMY® Nominee for best choral recording in 2006; and Threshold of Night, a GRAMMY® Nominee for “Best Choral Recording” and “Best Classical Album” in 2009. Joshua Habermann conducted the Santa Fe Desert Chorale’s recording, The Road Home, released in 2018. A native of California, Joshua Habermann is a graduate of Georgetown University and the University of Texas at Austin, where he completed doctoral studies in conducting with Craig Hella Johnson. He lives in Dallas with his wife Joanna, daughter Kira, and son Kai.

Following a nearly sold-out performance in 2017, Artistic Director Joshua Habermann conducts the 24 professional voices of the Santa Fe Desert Chorale in a return to The David R. Davidson Tower Arts Series at Highland Park United Methodist Church. The Ecstasies Above program pairs composers from creative periods 300 years apart, but whose virtuosic compositional styles are similar. George Frideric Handel’s Dixit Dominus, HWV 232 was written for 5-part chorus and 2 violins, 2 violas, cello, and basso continuo. Tarik O ’Regan’s (b.1978) Israfel, premiered three centuries after Handel’s Dixit Dominus, is scored for double vocal quartet and strings.

The chorus will be open to singers of all backgrounds. The choral workshop, focused on repertoire reflecting the Santa Fe Desert Chorale’s upcoming 2019 Summer Festival, will be led by Artistic Director Joshua Habermann. Jacquelyn Helin will be the collaborative pianist. Registration will close May 1, 2019 and will be on a first-come basis. Capacity is limited. “Hearts in Harmony” continues as a weekly choral program at the Interfaith Shelter. Now celebrating its 70th weekly choral sing, guests, staff, and volunteers join together to create a sense of community through song. 2019 Museum Purchase Award Winner Santa Fe Desert Chorale Development Chair, Rebecca Tobey, is the recipient of the 2019 Museum Purchase Award at the 14th Annual Cowgirl Up! Show in Wickenburg, AZ. As a result, the sculptor’s ceramic bear (pictured with the artist) will enter the permanent collection of Desert Caballeros Western Museum, a Smithsonian Affiliate.
