The Desert Chorale has the privilege of performing in some of the most beautiful and historic venues in the Southwest that provide the acoustic quality needed for excellent choral performances. While many of the venues and the music we sing represent specific religious or cultural traditions, we celebrate the diversity of faith, thought, artistry, and human experiences represented by the music performed in these spaces. We hope that this shared musical experience transcends and binds the audience, as we seek to be inspired by the power of great choral music.

Dear Friends: It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2019 Winter Festival. This will be my last with the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, as I step down from my post in 2020.

Over the past five years, I have enjoyed working with colleagues and partnering with arts and social service organizations to give back to this remarkable city of Santa Fe. It is a beautiful place to live, and providing arts access to all has been a goal of my tenure.

•T he Chorale’s “Hearts in Harmony” weekly choral sing at the Interfaith Community Shelter will have celebrated its 100th weekly sing by the time you read this program book. Founded in 2017, it is now led by the dynamic duo of SFDC Alto Sarah Nickerson and Angela Gabriel, who also leads ParkinSingers here in Santa Fe. As Shelter Director Joseph JordanBerenis reports, the program continues to improve the overall ambience of the shelter by “calming the whole when the participants are singing as the music saturates the environment.” He added that “participants come away in a much better space, and their interactions and connections with others improve noticeably.” We are grateful for cross-sector funding from CHRISTUS St. Vincent Regional Health Services, The Mission and Outreach Committee of The Church of the Holy Faith, pro bono support from The Candyman Strings & Things, and individual contributions from civic-minded donors just like you.

• Last spring’s Santa Fe Sings!, the idea of longtime Board Member Lynn Lee, welcomed 171 participants from across the southwest, including 23 students from Santa Fe High School. Master clinician Joshua Habermann leads the annual choral workshop for avocational singers from eighth graders to octogenarians. The joyful day of music-making is underwritten by a generous gift from Stephen and Jane Hochberg. Rev. Talitha Arnold will welcome the gathering at United Church of Santa Fe for its fourth session on Saturday, May 16, 2020.

And the Chorale was seen in exciting new concert formats and venues: • New vocal chamber music programs at The Church of the Holy Faith and St. Bede’s Episcopal Church featured Santa Fe Desert Chorale singers in intimate performances of classical repertoire. Attendance at those debut events doubled our goal. They will be repeated in summer 2020.

• Our new “Insights & Sounds” series expanded on the “Illumination” programming theme with

ancillary appearances at the City of Santa Fe Arts Commission’s Community Gallery, The Planetarium at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science, and Santa Fe Public Library’s Southside Branch, among other venues. The 2020 season will offer an exciting array of intimate appearances in conjunction with the Nüart Gallery, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, and The Museum of International Folk Art. Watch for details on these and other ancillary events in our 2020 brochure which will be issued in early January.

• We ‘packed ‘em in’ at “Late Nights” at El Méson with the Bert Dalton Trio. Versatile soprano Chelsea Helm will perform selections from the American Songbook in summer 2020!

• In September, Chorale vocalists enjoyed performing in a spectacular sold-out appearance as part of icon George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones Concert Experience at the Santa Fe Opera. This out-of-thisworld experience (literally) falls on the heels of sold-out tour performances in Dallas, Fort Worth, Oklahoma City, and standing room-only appearances at the American Choral Directors’ Conferences in Chicago (IL) and Pasadena (CA) over the past few years.

• Listeners worldwide have heard the Santa Fe Desert Chorale’s first commercial recording, The Road Home, released at No. 3 on the Classical and Classical Crossover Billboard Charts.

It goes without saying that the Chorale’s mainstage concerts represent the finest choral singing in America, as well as heartfelt music-making by the incredible vocalists in the ensemble. It’s no wonder that ticket sales have increased nearly 10% since 2015.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the generous support of patrons who serve on the Board of Directors, attend our sold-out galas, sponsor programs and concerts, volunteer as Ambassadors, and make individual contributions throughout the year. I also want to acknowledge one of the hardest working staffs in New Mexico – thank you to all for your commitment and effort.

The Santa Fe Desert Chorale is a family celebrating its 37th year – and one that I have been proud to lead for the last five years.

ABOUT THE SANTA FE DESERT CHORALE Founded in 1982 by Lawrence “Larry” Bandfield, the Santa Fe Desert Chorale is one of the longest continually performing professional music organizations in New Mexico, as well as one of the most distinguished. In his review of the American Voices program, Scott Cantrell of The Dallas Morning News wrote “The variety certainly displayed the ensemble’s impressive versatility. Habermann consistently got vivid performances, introspective music elegantly colored and shaped, extrovert fare delivered with great pizzazz. Individual singers got lots of solo exposure.”

Now in his 11th season, Artistic Director Joshua Habermann leads the Chorale in repertoire spanning seven centuries, from early polyphony to contemporary works. The composition of the Chorale is truly national in scope and the ensemble is recognized as one of the finest American chamber choirs. A recent highlight was an invitational appearance at the American Choral Directors Association National Conference, which was later broadcast by Minnesota Public Radio. In the 2017-2018 season, the Chorale toured to Chicago, Dallas, Fort Worth, Los Angeles, and Oklahoma City, and presented regular winter and summer seasons in New Mexico. Now in its 37th year, the Desert Chorale Summer Festival season is a centerpiece of the cultural life of Santa Fe, and among the nation’s most significant choral events.

Throughout its history, the Chorale has maintained a commitment to give voice to music from Hispanic and Native American communities. Dedicated to advancing the composers of our time, the Chorale has commissioned 23 works by 19 composers; three-quarters of the composers commissioned have been American. In addition, another seven works have been given their world or American premieres by the Santa Fe Desert Chorale. The ensemble performs at historical sites in Santa Fe such as the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi and Loretto Chapel, as well as other venues throughout the Southwest.

The Desert Chorale prides itself on its strong relationships within the community of Northern New Mexico, and enjoys collaborations with the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, Museum of International Folk Art, Museum of Spanish Colonial Art, New Mexico History Museum, Performance Santa Fe, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Santa Fe Pro Musica, Santa Fe Opera, and Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, among others.

Community Engagement programming partners the Chorale with other musical, artistic, social services, and educational organizations in Santa Fe and on tour. Other important goals include fostering the next generation of singers and arts administrators.

PROGRAM NOTES The psalms have long been a source of comfort and inspiration to people of many faiths. Common to the Jewish and Christian traditions, and also mentioned in the Koran, they are woven into the cultural heritage of the three Abrahamic traditions. The Psalms were written not only as poetry, but as songs to be sung; the word itself comes from the Greek psalmoi, meaning “words to accompany music.”

Some of the psalms are so familiar that they have entered into our national conversation. This line from Psalm 23, for example, has been invoked in contexts ranging from collective prayer to calls to social action in honor of Martin Luther King: Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I shall fear no evil Whatever our background, the Psalms are a rich source, transcending barriers of place, language, and time, and speaking to our shared human experience.

Our program begins with Credidi of Mexican composer Juan de Lienas. The vigorous polyphony is an example of the sophistication of Latin American composers who were writing complex music for the cathedrals of the New World at a time when the colonies of North America had only the most rudimentary musical culture.

writing of Rossi demonstrates his grounding in the renaissance, Bach’s Baroque style has the voices leaping in a virtuosic dance.

Rachmaninov’s All Night Vigil (also sometimes called Vespers) is a staple of the Desert Chorale’s repertoire.

The two movements excerpted here mark the opening of the matins section of the work, and flow seamlessly into Stanford’s Beati Quorum Via, also a jewel in the choral canon.

In 2010 as the Desert Chorale prepared to mark the 500th anniversary of Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610, we reached out to Oregon-based composer Robert Kyr, who spends a part of his year in Northern New Mexico.

Drawing inspiration from Monteverdi, Robert wrote for us a companion piece: Santa Fe Vespers 2010. Now, on the work’s tenth anniversary we are pleased to bring it back, alongside the Nisi Dominus from Monteverdi’s famous 1610 collection.

English language settings by Shawn Kirchner and Herbert Howells, along with an energetic setting of Psalm 66 by the Lithuanian composer Vytautas Miskinis bring this “joyful noise” to an exciting conclusion.

We turn next to Europe for two Psalms by Protestant composers. Johann Schein’s Die mit Tränen säen (They that Sow with Tears) begins with a chromatic line that is taken up in turn by each of the voices, contrasting with a celebratory dance in triple meter for “werden mit Freuden ernten” (“shall reap with joy”). In Sweelinck’s setting of Psalm 98, the Dutch organist demonstrates his mastery of counterpoint by weaving the original Calvinist psalm tune into an energetic web of interlocking parts.

Salamone Rossi was a renowned violinist and composer whose music has been rediscovered in recent decades.

Rossi’s output spans the range from secular Italian madrigals to music for the Jewish liturgy, and will be explored in greater depth this summer in a program pairing him with his contemporary Claudio Monteverdi. Here, Rossi’s setting of Psalm 112 stands alongside an excerpt from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Motet No. 1. Joshua Habermann, Artistic Director, is in his 11th season with the Santa Fe Desert Chorale. Since joining the Chorale he has raised the ensemble’s artistic profile and broadened its programming to include choral-orchestral masterworks as well as cutting-edge a cappella programs.

Having joined the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in 2011, Joshua Habermann has held the Jean D. Wilson Chorus Director Chair since 2015. As Director, he prepares the 200-voice chorus for classical and pops series concerts.

Highlights with the DSO include performances of Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244, Guiseppe Verdi’s Requiem, Hector Berlioz’ Te Deum, Op. 22, and Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem, Op. 66, which was performed for the national meeting of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) in 2013.

In demand for honors choirs, choral festivals, choral institutes, and workshops worldwide, recently Joshua Habermann traveled to southeastern China to lead seminars and masterclasses in Shenzhen at the invitation on the Guangdong Chorus Association.

From 2008 to 2011 Joshua Habermann was Director of Choral Studies at the University of Miami Frost School of Music, where he led the graduate program in conducting and directed the Frost Chorale. Notable projects in Miami included an appearance at the Florida Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association convention, and collaborations with the New World Symphony and conductor Michael Tilson Thomas in music of Charles Ives, Franz Schubert, and Ludwig van Beethoven. During this same period, Joshua Habermann led the Master Chorale of South Florida in performances of masterworks such as Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Op. 70, Franz Joseph Haydn’s

From 1996-2008 he was Assistant Conductor of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, and Professor of Music at San Francisco State University, where under his direction the SFSU Chamber Singers undertook international engagements in Havana, Cuba, and concert tours in Germany, the Czech Republic, and China. In 2006 he led a collaboration between the SFSU Chamber Singers and the Orchestre des Jeunes de la Méditerranée in music of Francis Poulenc and the Requiem, Op. 9, of Maurice Duruflé in concerts throughout France. National invitations include the Waging Peace Festival in Eugene (OR), multiple appearances at the California Music Educators Convention, and appearances at several American Choral Directors Association regional conventions.

As a singer (tenor) he has performed with the Oregon Bach Festival Chorus (Eugene, OR) and Conspirare (Austin, TX).

Recording credits include three projects with Conspirare: Through the Green Fuse; Requiem, a GRAMMY® Nominee for “Best Choral Recording” in 2006; and Threshold of Night, a GRAMMY® Nominee for “Best Choral Recording” and “Best Classical Album” in 2009. Joshua Habermann conducted the Santa Fe Desert Chorale’s recording, The Road Home, released in 2018 at No. 3 on the Billboard Classical Chart.

A native of California, Joshua Habermann is a graduate of Georgetown University and the University of Texas at Austin, where he completed doctoral studies in conducting with Craig Hella Johnson. He lives in Dallas with his wife Joanna, daughter Kira, and son Kai.

JOIN SOUNDWAVES Sponsor a Singer at Any of the Three Levels!

Level 1 - $1500 contribution: Select the singer that you would enjoy having sing Happy Birthday to you on your special day, and have your photo taken with the same artist during the summer season.

Level 2 - $2000 contribution Level 1, plus one of the following: either lunch with the singer during the summer season or a shared music playlist from the singer with background information on why the particular music resonates for him/her.

Level 3 - $5000 contribution Levels 1 and 2, plus invite your chosen singer into your home, at a mutually-agreeable time during the summer season, to give a private musical performance for family and friends.

The Santa Fe Desert Chorale

honors the rich choral tradition extending over five centuries in its concert performances and expands the choral canon by commissioning new works by leading composers of today. In the same spirit, by including the Santa Fe Desert Chorale in their estate planning, members of the Legacy Circle honor the history and accomplishments of the Chorale over the past four decades by providing a secure mesa from which the Chorale will continue to ascend to new heights in the future.

Ways to Give to the Legacy Circle

Many donors make a Legacy Gift by naming the Santa Fe Desert Chorale as a beneficiary on their life insurance policies, retirement plans, or other forms of gifts.

Legacy Giving may be included in your will or trusts and be specified as revocable or irrevocable.

Many donors have expressed interest in using Charitable Gift Annuities. This type of annuity involves an irrevocable transfer of cash or other assets, and provides an income stream to the designated annuitants during their lifetime. At death, the Chorale receives the remainder of the gift.
