Eddie Lee McDaniel
passed away on October 9th, 2023. An avid bowler, he bowled 3-4 times a week at Bell Lanes in Sun City up until his death at age 92. 'Eat, Sleep, Bowl' was his motto. In the hospital, his only wishes were for his beloved wife of 70 years, Shirley, to be taken care of and return to bowling. He loved the sport, all of his bowling friends, animals, and his devoted family.

champs and finalists Cesar Padilla was exceptional in scratch, while Jacob Vasquez pulled off some come from behind brilliance, capturing titles in tremendous JBT Arizona Conference action at Chandler's Bowlero Kyrene. In our exciting 'super survivor' format, the low game and the lowest overall totals are eliminated game by game until only one survivor stands. The scratch division was all about defending Bowler of the Year Padilla, who led qualifying, a big advantage in this format, and expanded it round by round. It almost fell apart for him in the penultimate round though, as his 206 tied for low game with Nathan Tidball, with Cesar only surviving on the total pinfall tiebreaker. That round also saw Ryan Zent, Brandon Rother, Quinten Bell, and Tidball eliminated in that order in pinfall, leaving Aliyas Sargento to take on Padilla for the title. Aliyas had his breakthrough win at Desert Open in August, but Cesar left no chance for Sargento to win his second, starting with the front seven en route to a 268 final score and 7th career JBT title. Handicap was a totally opposite story, with first (Terrell Coates) and sixth (Jacob Vasquez) separated by a paltry 42 pins after five rounds. In that frantic next round, season points leader Pablo Ypina had the low game, while Vasquez' 247 was just enough to leap all the way to second best pinfall behind Coates, advancing them to the title game, and leaving Brayden Sibilla, Jaida-Marie De La Cruz, Xavier Provencher, and Ypina in third through sixth. In that game, Vasquez came through with another big score, enough to get past Coates and win a long-awaited first career JBT title. Kendall Bollea wrapped up a solid weekend with the Girls Scratch win over Kendall Bollea, while Brandon Rother defeated Carlos Belnap for the U17 crown. Big thanks as always to the team at Kyrene for hosting a big weekend that again awarded over $5,000 to bowlers of all ages and skill levels. Want in on all this unique fun? 8 DESERT BOWLER November 15, 2023 Testimonials: Why do our members enjoy being a part of the Arizona Bowlerettes? When asked, this is what they said: The camaraderie and enjoyment of seeing the different Bowlerettes each month brings me pleasure. I love to see the different types of tournaments and bowling centers each month.
by: Kathy A. Look
Bowlerettes has been a big part of my life for more than 25 years. There is so much more to being a member of the Arizona Bowlerettes than just the love of bowling. I look forward each month to meeting new members, and seeing and talking with current Bowlerettes that I have met over the years. It’s fun and challenging to experience the different tournaments & lanes conditions at bowling centers other than my home house. I have only been a Bowlerette for a few years but I have bowled at so many centers I never would have had an opportunity to bowl in if not for AZ Bowlerettes. My average has improved due to bowling on a wide range of conditions. It’s low maintenance too, I only go to tournaments I’m able to, and I only pay for the tournaments I bowl in. The best thing is all the new friends I’ve made through AZ Bowlerettes.
The Arizona Bowlerettes started the 2023-2024 with an out of town tournament at Shake, Rattle and Bowl in Camp Verde on September 9th. Thank you to the staff of Shake, Rattle and Bowl for a smooth tournament, it was a great start to the season. The top bowler in the 9 Pin No Tap Tournament with 48 bowlers in Division I was Holly Bennett with a 691 series. Division II had 51 Arizona Bowlerettes, the top bowler with a 761 series was Ann Poole. The Mystery Doubles winners were Division I Holly Bennett and Donna Travaglio, Division II Cynthia Coor and Ann Poole. The season continued on October 14th in Casa Grande at the Cotton Bowl. The Arizona Bowlerettes received a warm welcome from the staff. The format was again a 9 Pin

No Tap. Dee Dee Garrett won Division I with a 777 series out of 54 in her division. Ann Poole led Division II with a 785 series with 57 Arizona Bowlerettes in her division. The Mystery Doubles was won by Dee Dee Garrett and Sabra Grover in Division I and Ann Poole and Judy Caron Division II. The November 11th tournament was held at Kyrene Lanes in Chandler. The results are not yet available. Upcoming Events: December 9th the Annual Holiday tournament will be held at Bowlero Via Linda in Scottsdale. There will be a gift ex-
change if you wish to participate. Bring a NEW gift valued at $10. It will be placed on the gift table, once the bowler rolls a strike they can choose a gift from the table if they brought one to exchange. The special events committee is planning other holiday events during tournament, looking forward to seeing you there. The Queens Tournament for this season will be held on January 13 and 14, 2024 at Bowlero Mesa. Save the date of March 23rd for the March Madness tournament. This is our Annual fun tournament that you can invite any adult guest to bowl the Scotch Doubles tournament with you. The only requirement is 1 member of the team must be an Arizona Bowlerette. Watch for more details after the first of the year. The Arizona Bowlerettes is continuing their partnership with Virtue Bowling Supply. USBC Acquires the Forty Frame Game ARLINGTON, Texas – The United States Bowling Congress has acquired The Forty Frame Game through a purchase agreement with owner Jim Walter. USBC now owns all trademarks, intellectual property and licensing rights for The Forty Frame Game. Known as the world’s most unique singles bowling tournament, the event, which started in 1989, has been regularly held in the same host city as the USBC Open Championships since 1992. By purchasing The Forty Frame Game, USBC plans to make the tournament a long-term side event for the Open Championships. “The Forty Frame Game provides an exciting and fun side event that appeals to bowlers of all skill levels,” USBC Executive Director Chad Murphy said. “Traveling to bowl a national tournament is a big trip for our members, and we want to provide a variety of side events bowlers may not have back home.” The Forty Frame Game is a handicap singles tournament of 40 continuous frames that includes notap frames, mulligans, bonus pins and other fun challenges. There also is a variety of side events and doubles for bowlers to earn additional prize money. “The Forty Frame Game has a rich history and has welcomed hundreds of thousands of bowlers in its 34 years of competition. Thank you to everyone who has bowled the event with us,” said Jim Walter of The Forty Frame Game. “We are thrilled The Forty Frame Game will live on as part of the USBC Open Championships for bowlers to enjoy for many years to come.” The event will not be offered in 2024. USBC plans to invest in technology to make the scoring experience better for the bowlers and relaunch The Forty Frame Game in the future.

NORTHERN Arizona Bowlerettes by Karen Blomgren, NAZB VP Yabba Dabba Doo! It was time for our second tournament of the 2023-2024 season! We all zoomed down to Sun City where we bowled 3 regular games at Johnson Pavilion! Despite the never ending road construction, the trip went quickly and smoothly! The folks at Johnson Pavilion were more than ready for the 50+ ladies who made the trip. You couldn’t miss our colorful shirts, including newer members who just received theirs! We all looked so sharp! Sec/Treas Pam Cirasole was super ready to check the ladies in and get them to their lanes. VP Karen Blomgren was busy selling both 50/50 & raffle tickets (Directors Gracie Dominick and Ann & Kay Monagle, we missed you!). VP Karen watched the ladies try to decide which raffle prize they wanted to win; Prez Linda Tilley had some beautiful Fall arrangements for them to pick from along with a prize donation from Toni Sherrill. Loved those Fall colors! Prez Linda was busy taking shirt orders from our brand new Bowlerettes! Our membership is 103 strong! Welcome ladies! Prez Linda also bowled with all of the new Bowlerettes at their first tournament; making them feel even more welcome! VP Karen had a sign listing the ladies’ birthdays for the month of
October, and we made sure to wish them a happy birthday! October birthdays included Melanie Estrella (10/1), Sande Bobango (10/3), Louise Lilly (10/9), Donna Wilson (10/10), Joan Comfort (10/11), Pam Dellinger (10/15), Susan Thompson (10/16), Sheevaun Goff (10/19), Jan Bonifay (10/20), Patty Fest (10/29), and Mysti Huston (10/30). Hope your day was/is a grand one! We also wanted to wish Linda Evans a very happy 50th wedding anniversary! What a special milestone! It’s winner time! In Division #1 (ladies with averages up to and including 145), brand new Bowlerette Sheevaun Goff (664) was the top bowler! Nice bowling Sheevaun! She was followed by Carol Belanger (661), Michelle Broxmeyer (639), Vicky Jacquez (638), Shirley Wiseman (627), Kathy Houchin (620), Kristie LaShier (620), Linda Evans (620), Judy Robosson (615), Mary Robinson (607), Naomi Bronson (601), Claire Mulliner (599), Rosanna Singleton (596), Toni Sherrill (585), Patty Willis (577), Terri Whitfield (571), and Lorrie Goeke (571). Seventeen ladies out of thirty-four placed in Division #1! Looking good ladies! On to Division #2! In Division #2 (ladies with averages of 146 and above), Dawn Howle (631) came out on top! Super bowling Dawn! She was followed by Lean Looi
Cullen (604), Karla Gibbons (594), Margaret Albright (584), and Carla Little (581). Five ladies out of ten placed in Division #2! Awesome blossom ladies! Coming right up with more winners! At our October tournament, we had our annual Spookiest Earring Contest! Prez Linda had created 3 great prizes for the 3 winners! Last year’s winners Toni Sherrill & Teri McKay were the judges, and they picked three great sets of ears! This years winner’s were Kathy Houchin, Kathy Lening, & Pam Frendian! Love those lobes! And yet we have more winners! Teri McKay was delighted to have her ticket drawn for a free entry to our November tournament! The following ladies dashed up as their numbers were drawn for 50/50 & raffle prizes: Cherri Holleman, Shirley Wiseman, Linda Tilley, Belinda Patrizi, Judy Salyers, & Lean Looi Cullen! Congrats ladies!
We would like to welcome the following lovely ladies to our fold: Sheevaun Goff, Terri Whitfield, Diana Carlson, and Pam Dellinger! We hope you have a grand time with our group! Our third tournament of the 2023-2024 season keeps us local. We will bowl at Antelope Lanes in Prescott Valley on Saturday, November 18th, 2023. We will be bowling 3 No-tap games. If you happen to be up north enjoying our fabulous weather, please drop in and watch the fun. The NORTHERN Arizona Bowlerettes are an awesome group of ladies of all ages from all over Northern, Central, & Western Arizona! Ladies do NOT have to be sanctioned to bowl with this group. If this interests you, please contact Sec/Treas Pam Cirasole (928-227-1258). New members are always joyfully welcomed!

Another Bowling Company Going Public
by Dave Williams It all started with American International Bowling Corporation (AIBC), the first bowling center chain to go public on October 28th, 1958, with 770,000 shares being offered at less than $1 per share. Yes, that’s right — before there was Bowlero, or AMF Bowling Centers, or even Brunswick Recreation Centers, the first really large bowling conglomerate to operate bowling centers on a worldwide basis was AIBC, as we reported in an article debuting in July of 2021 (The Bowling Chain That Started Them All). In that article, it was reported that the offering would benefit the original eight locations being constructed in New Jersey (Ramsey, New Brunswick and Levittown), New York (Yonkers), Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, Bethlehem and Lancaster), and Michigan (Flint). Likewise, the Pinstripes (stock symbol PNST) news release states that the public offering will assist in their expansion at six locations already underway: Aventura, Fla., Orlando, Fla., Coral Gables, Fla., Paramus, N.J., Walnut Creek, Calif., and Bellevue, Washington. Pinstripes is not a new name for many of you, as they already operate bowling entertainment centers in 14 different locations: North Bethesda, Md., Norwalk, Conn., Chicago, Ill., Oak Brook, Ill., Northbrook, Ill., South Barrington, Ill., Cleveland, Ohio, Fort Worth, Tx., Houston, Tx., Edina, Minn., Overland Park, Kansas, San Mateo, Calif., Canoga Park, Calif., and Georgetown, in the nations capitol. Is it just me, or have any of you also noticed how the locations of Pinstripes mirror many of the closings of famous bowling locations from the past? The Pinstripes prospectus defines the company as a best-inclass experiential dining and entertainment brand combining bistro, bowling, bocce and private event space. If they’re looking to capture former “leaguers” from those famous closed locations, this is not the “home away from home” atmosphere to lure them back. Instead, Pinstripes seems more content to offer the same type of allure as Bowlero, Round1 USA, and all the rest… exotic food, drinks, private rooms and event spaces. One can only assume that opportunities for “leaguers” will be available — but only at times which cannot be filled with the higher priced events. Looking over the list of current and future locations of Pinstripes locations provides a look into the past of bowling center nobility, where only the best that bowling
Pinstripes North Bethesda (2017) had to offer were built and allowed to flourish. Even Pinstripes headquarters in Northbrook, Ill., is just a stone’s throw from the shuttered AMF Strike ’n Spare Lanes, perhaps most famous for the very first Jerry Lewis Bowl-A-Thon in 1959. It was also host to the last BPAA All Star tournament in 1970, won by Bobby Cooper of Houston ($8,000) for the men, and Mary Baker of Central Islip, N.Y. ($4,000) for the women. Then there’s Pinstripes in the Westfield Topanga Mall, less than 3 miles from the former location of AMF Rocket Bowl in Chatsworth, California. Perhaps most notable about the Rocket Bowl location, named in honor of the Atlas rockets constructed in the Aerojet Rocketdyne plant next door, were the weekly visits by league member Roy Rogers, who lived just a few blocks away on Trigger Street (named after his famous horse). Another well known bowling location was King Louie West in Overland Park, Kansas, which was a combination of bowling lanes, billiards and an indoor ice-skating rink. Vic and Morris Lerner, two Polish immigrant brothers, shared in the American Dream when they wagered that families relocating to the suburbs of Kansas City would see bowling as fun for the whole family, as reported in the Shawnee Mission Post in 2022. The bet paid off, and King Louie West became a draw for local families, and also millions of TV fans that enjoyed the PBA Tour stop in Overland Park for many years. (The former King Louie West facility is about a 15 minute drive from Pinstripes Overland Park location). King Louie West eventually closed in 2009, after a 50 year run. The mammoth building remained idle for a couple of years until the Johnson County Commission purchased the facility from AMF with the vision of creating a county Heritage Center. Today, visitors can drop by the Heritage Center, which is anchored by the Johnson County Museum. The Shawnee Mission Post article goes on to say that features of the King Louie West Bowling Center and Ice Chateau can still be seen today, with subtle but clever nods to the building’s history. The Pinstripes news release states that they are visualizing a
long-term opportunity of approximately 150 locations in the USA, with substantial international potential. The value of the company is estimated at $520 million, or $10.00 per share, according to the combination prospectus and news release. The Board of Directors of Pinstripes, and partner Banyan Acquisition Corporation (stock symbol BYN) have all approved the transaction, subject to approval by the SEC and Banyan stockholders. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2023. Dale Schwartz, Founder and CEO of Pinstripes, stated in the release: “We founded Pinstripes to create the fun interactions and celebrations that people crave, by uniquely combining made-fromscratch dining with the timeless
games of bowling and bocce. We’re at a strategic inflection point of substantial growth. Innovative restaurant and recreational brands are filling the void as key traffic creators in shopping centers, as legacy anchor tenants close stores.” Everyone knows that history repeats itself, and what goes around, comes around… again. Mr. Schwartz, and others, feel that bowling presents a unique opportunity to replace areas in shopping malls, so called white spaces, caused by numerous closings of anchor stores. But can you imagine what the game will be like when league bowling returns to the prominence once enjoyed — only now at your local shopping mall? Of course, Pinstripes and others will need to get back to the “home away from home” atmosphere, at least for most of the day. ____________________ • Artists concept of Pinstripes North Bethesda (2017). pinstripes. com • Conceptual drawing for King Louie West (1959). GCU Bowling brings home GCU-ASU Grudge Match trophy for 3rd time
The Grand Canyon University Bowling team took the drive across town for the 8th Annual Grudge Match against Arizona State University and returned with the trophy following a 19.5-10.5 victory Saturday. This marks the third time in the event's history that the Lopes have won, and the first time since 2018. The Lopes' squad got off to a good start, winning 2-1 in each of the first four matches of the day, putting them in a comfortable 8-4 lead. "Our performance was a complete team effort," said GCU Head Coach Ben Canfield. "Members from all levels of our travel team were earning points, and that put us in a good spot. It really speaks to our depth." The GCU JV2 team also secured enough points to close out
the event in the first set of best-offive Baker matches, marking the earliest that the Grudge Match result has ever been decided. "The other coaches and I were definitely impressed by the chemistry of those guys," said Canfield about his second team. "They played a big role in us sealing the win." Now, the Lopes squad has just over two weeks until they depart to Diamond Bar, California, for their season-opening tournaments: The Oak Tree Lanes Open and Floria Financial Services Open on November 18 and 19. "We still haven't bowled a real event quite yet, but it was still good to get some positive momentum," said Canfield. "We're very excited to see how far the team can go this year."
USBC Completes Certified String Pinsetter Scoring Research; Determines No Significant Difference from Free-Fall Machines ARLINGTON, Texas – The United States Bowling Congress has released its most recent scoring research report related to string pinsetters. The report concludes there is no statistically significant difference between the scoring pace of USBC-certified string pinsetters and traditional free-fall machines. Therefore, an average conversion between the pinsetter types will not be necessary and, effective immediately, USBC will update its playing rules to allow for the averages between pinsetter types to be interchangeable provided the string pinsetter has been certified by USBC. USBC conducted additional scoring research on the scoring pace of string pinsetters that meet USBC specifications. The study consisted of gathering volunteers to travel to the International Training and Research Center in Arlington, Texas, to bowl two sessions of four games – two games on certified string pinsetters and two games on free-fall pinsetters. More than 500 bowlers participated in the study, including more than 300 bowlers who participated in at least two sessions. The study featured more than 3,500 games bowled. The data from the research shows: There is no statistically significant difference between the scoring pace of the pinsetter types when controlled in the same environment. The differences in scoring do not relate to bowlers’ averages, ages or genders. The test had sufficient statistical power to identify a difference of four pins or larger had it existed. An average conversion between
the pinsetter types will not be necessary. The rule change only applies to USBC-certified string pinsetters. Older string pinsetters that have not been converted for certification remain uncertified for USBC competition. “This study and USBC rules change is the culmination of years of work in collaboration with the industry’s manufacturers,” USBC Executive Director Chad Murphy said. “Working together, we created a USBC certification standard for string pin machines with scoring in line with traditional machines. This gives proprietors more options and bowlers expanded opportunities for certified competition.” As a means of further investigating previous string pinsetter scoring research that featured the use of the USBC’s automated Bowlscore ramp, the team wanted to design a test that would provide enough data to definitively tell if the two machines (string and free-fall pinsetters) score differently. The full report, which can be found at bowl.com, details the results of the participant testing and explains the differences in the current findings versus previous scoring research that utilized the USBC’s automated Bowlscore ramp. USBC will continue to monitor averages of bowlers around the country as some transition into leagues featuring certified string pinsetters in order to gather additional data.
On November 1, 2023 the Phoenix and Arizona State bowling communities lost a special friend. 96 year old Eli Johnson was struck by a car early that morning while crossing Thunderbird Rd and 28th Ave. Eli has been involved with the bowling community, for years even coaching youth bowlers at Bowlero Glendale. He would always call you young man or young lady and ask how are you doing! He will be missed greatly! Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. The photo above was taken in 2015 with then Bowlero Glendale General Manager Mike Horsley (left) and Eli Johnson
