Arizona's Mike Friedrichs Competes in 50th Consecutive USBC Open Championships
LAS VEGAS – For Michael Friedrichs, his annual trip to the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships is more than just a tournament.
From the thrill of competing in a championship venue to the acclaim for a memorable performance on the lanes, there’s always been something special about being part of the event for the 68-year-old right-hander.
Friedrichs, from Glendale, Arizona, elected to add a little more excitement and something new to his trip in 2024 by signing up for the same squad as the tournament’s opening ceremony to celebrate his 50th consecutive tournament appearance Saturday at the South

Point Bowling Plaza.
Joined by his wife, Jean, while donning a custom Arizona Diamondbacks bowling jersey with the No. 50, Friedrichs was able to
GCU Bowling secures 2nd-ever ITC Nationals bid
2nd-place finish at ITC Sectionals punches ticket to Kentucky in April
by: Noah Powers, GCU Club Sports Writing StaffIn a rollercoaster weekend where the Grand Canyon University Bowling team was as low as 17th place in their pool of 21, the Lopes rallied to finish in 2nd place at United States Bowling Congress (USBC) ITC Sectionals in Dallas, Texas. The 2nd-place finish was the Lopes' best in their history at the event and qualified them for only their second trip ever to the USBC National Championships in Jeffersontown, Kentucky.
The slow start that the Lopes experienced is something that they have experience overcoming - often catching fire in Day 2 of events this season.
"We put such a big emphasis on not paying attention to the scores

take his honorary march across the lanes as part of the opening festivities and was presented by a chevron, plaque and diamond lapel pin to recognize his longevity at the event.
“It was pretty cool,” said Friedrichs, a Metro Phoenix USBC and Arizona State USBC Hall of Famer. “Everybody marches out, then I come out, then ‘Joe Bowler’ – it just adds to it. When (USBC Deputy Executive Director) Jason (Overstreet) asked me about it during the presentation, I said this is an event. It’s no longer just a tournament. This has become an event, and you just have to be here for that. You can’t describe it to anybody – you

around us," said GCU Head Bowling Coach Ben Canfield. "I'm not even sure that the guys knew they were in 17th after the first block of game. Everyone was so locked in

on controlling what was in front of them."

Strike Force was at Bowlero Kyrene, March 3rd with 115 total entries (88 qualifying and 27 parlays) paying out over $6,500 in main and side event prize funds. The Finals would see Mike Rhoads shoot his highest game of the tournament, 256 300 with handicap), to take home his first AHT SFT title and $625 (no progressive pot). Congrats to Eddie Wilcox on second place for $1,000. Also, congrats to Michael LePage on third place for $200 (also no progressive pot).

(continued from page 1) just have to be here.
“Jean doesn’t come to very many events, but I think she wanted to be here for this one. It was a big deal to her. She was involved with the team shirts and surprised everyone with those. Those were in the works for two years.”
His journey at the USBC Open Championships started during the 1974 event in Indianapolis, where he was able to take in his first experience alongside family.
“I was in college during my freshman year, and my dad called and said they needed a bowler for Indianapolis,” Friedrichs said. “We drove, and to get there and just see everything for the first time was special. You could read about it, you could look at the pictures, but it’s different to be there. I go back to the time when they still had the guys up above doing the scores by hand. That was pretty cool to see.
“One of the big things I remember about that trip was that my grandfather was also there, and I think he bowled doubles and singles with my dad. His car got towed. That’s one of the things I’ll always remember. My first trip to Indianapolis, and his car got towed.”
As his appearances started to add up, Friedrichs started to see his scores go up, too. He capped his trip to the 1989 event in Wichita, Kansas, with a 300 game in singles.
“It was one of those unexpected things,” said Friedrichs, who rolled one of the 44 300s games at the 1989 event. “I made a huge adjustment the last game and threw 12 strikes. I went from playing fourth arrow to playing outside of first arrow for that one game.
“At that time, American Airlines used to give two round-trip tickets for a 300 at nationals. There were a lot of them in Wichita, so that was the last year of it, but we got to take advantage of that.”
Friedrichs added his name to the record book again at the 1995 event in Reno, Nevada, when he paired with Mike Procaccino to tie the tournament’s top doubles game with 578. Procaccino fired a 300 game in the performance, and Friedrichs added 278.
Although they were passed the

following year in Salt Lake City by USBC Hall of Famers Rick and Ron Pollard (580) on the way to the Team All-Events title, the score still is tied for second all-time at the Open Championships nearly 30 years later.
“I’m big on teammates doing well,” Friedrichs said. “I was spending more time rooting for Mike to shoot 300. We weren’t really paying attention to the record. We were just rooting each other on. After we finished, we wondered what the record was and had no idea we tied it. It was pretty cool to have a teammate shoot 300.”
Looking ahead, Friedrichs has a long-term goal of reaching 100,000 pins at the Open Championships and no plans of stopping his annual appearance at the event.
“I’m just going to keep going,” Friedrichs said. “We travel together and have a good time, and I’m just going to keep bowling. Even if I don’t bowl well, it doesn’t matter – you’re not happy with the score, but all in all, you have a good time. We’re already working on dates for next year.”
In his 50th appearance, Friedrichs had sets of 524 in doubles, 488 in team and 475 in singles for a 1,487 total to bring his career pinfall at the tournament to 86,083, a 191.2 average.
The 2024 Open Championships got underway Feb. 23 and will run through July 29 at the South Point Bowling Plaza. The tournament is scheduled to feature more than 11,000 teams and 55,000 bowlers making their way to compete in Las Vegas.

Cesar Padilla put an exclamation mark on a dominant weekend, while Cameron Coleman pulled off an upset for another win, in exciting Arizona Conference JBT action at Phoenix's AMF Desert Hills Lanes.
Finalists competed in matchplay with a re-seed after each round, with the highest survivor playing the lowest. In scratch semis, Padilla rolled past Nathan Bravo, while in the other match, Daunte Uribarri blasted 277 to defeat Amarr Bryant and advance to the title game. In the final, Daunte couldn't find the same look, and Cesar kept pouring on the strikes, winning the match, sweeping the weekend, extending his points lead, and earning JBT title number eleven.
Coleman got past points leader Alex London in one handicap semifinal, but the other match stole the spotlight, as 12 yearold Christian Ortega ran the front eleven strikes before a final shot miss for 296, beating Connor Lee Haven Barker (who had previously taken out the top two seeds) to advance to the finals. It looked like Christian would ride the momentum to the win, but late mistakes from Ortega and a late charge from Coleman were good enough to swipe away the win, the third title of Cameron's JBT career.
Mackenzie Paige rolled to the top girls scratch spot, then beat Paityn Gaines for the title. Asher Toberer completed a successful weekend with a win over Zackary Evans for the U17 crown. Big thanks to Steven and the Desert Hills team for a great first visit to their center since 2008! Want in on all this fun for all skill levels and ages? Just check out our schedule and come on down!

Tucson Bowlers Mourn Passing of JJ (Joel) Holman
By Mark KerrTucson Metro USBC and our Tucson bowling was shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Tucson Metro USBC Hall of Famer JJ Holman.
JJ took part in this year's City Open Championships and was at the Tucson Metro USBC Class of 2024 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony that took place at Fiesta Lanes.
JJ bowled many 300's, 32 of them including back to back perfect games, 800 series and has won numerous city, state and other bowling titles. He started bowling as a youth at Cactus Bowl. He was inducted into the Tucson Metro USBC Hall of Fame in 2016.
During the final team squad for the 80th Annual Tucson Metro USBC Open Championships, March 3, Tucson Metro USBC held a special tribute to JJ (Joel) Holman, who unexpectedly passed away the week prior.

JJ bowled in the 80th Annual Tucson Metro USBC Open Championships this year and finished 4th in the Singles Competition.

16 games, rolling their way to seventh by the end of game 32, fourth after 48, and their eventual 2nd-place spot, edging out St. Ambrose University by 77 pins on the last day to finish behind champion Wichita State University, who entered the event as the top-seeded team. GCU ended their successful weekend with a total pinfall of 13,106.
"For me personally, making it to ITC Nationals is a dream come true. I'll remember the comeback we had to secure our bid for the rest of my life," said GCU senior Josh Molloy. "This weekend reassured our team that we aren't to be overlooked and it shows how far we've come. Now that we've punched out ticket the real hard work begins to try and make a run
at history and become national champions."
Although Molloy is the elder statesman on the GCU squad as a fifth-year senior, he was a year shy of being on the last GCU squad to make the ITC Nationals trip.
"A finish like this is really validating as a club program," said Canfield. "To make it back to nationals reaffirms the worth of the hard work that we've been putting in since 2019. We don't take the opportunity for granted."
Although the team punched their ticket to ITC Nationals, their next event is the Collegiate Club National Bowling Championships on April 6-7 in Anderson, Indiana. Both the Lopes' Men's and Women's Bowling teams will attend.

TUCSON - The Tucson Metro USBC held their Class of 2024 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at Fiesta Lanes, Saturday February 24.
The ceremony took place after the second squad of Doubles and Singles competition for the 80th Annual Tucson Metro USBC Open Championships.
This years Tucson Metro USBC Hall of Fame Inductees were: Patricia Ray for Meritorious Service; Bryanna Cote, Josh Moret, Dave Hyatt and Kevin Smania for Superior Performance.
Here are the bios for the inductees:
Patricia Ray
Tucson Metro USBC Class of 2024 Hall of Fame - Meritorious Service
Pat Ray’s start in bowling began when she helped her parents with the bowling leagues they were officers in, learning the bowling paperwork, including record sheets, score books and standing sheets, which had to be completed and filled out each week, as well as the annual Men’s and Women’s open tournaments in the Morenci area.
Pat’s first job in bowling was at Morenci Lanes in 1973, working in the snack bar area. Morenci was a tight knit community. The Manager of Morenci Lanes was one of Pat’s teachers in high school and bowled with her father in the Morenci Men’s League.
She met Steve Ray and they were married on June 7, 1974, by the Morenci Lanes front desk clerk who was also a minister. Steve enlisted in the Air Force and he and Pat also started a family.
Pat, Steve and their kids moved to Tucson, home of Davis Monthan Air Force Base and Pat resumed her bowling career, in leagues at then known as Santa Cruz Lanes (now known as Cactus Bowl). Pat and Steve joined several leagues at Santa Cruz, got her kids involved with youth bowling.
The then Manager, Mike Kaufman, hired Pat as a league

coordinator, going lane to lane to encourage bowlers to join open spots on the leagues offered. Within a few weeks, Pat was hired to work as the Program Director.
For the last 38 years, Pat has helped our bowling family as the Coordinator at Lucky Strike Bowl, overseeing the various leagues offered, including local awards - averaging 2,000 a year, creating teams and encouraging new bowlers to take part in leagues, including the Vegas Leagues. Pat goes up to Las Vegas for the Annual Tournament held over Memorial Day weekend to help coordinate the event.
Lucky Strike Bowl has won Best Bowling Alley in reader contests in both the Tucson Weekly and Arizona Daily Star, something Pat has helped to contribute to Lucky Strike’s success through her efforts.
Pat Ray has served on the Board of the Tucson Women’s Bowling Association, as well as a member of the local 500 Club, serving also as Historian.
During her time in bowling, Pat’s high game was a 256 and 626. She took part in four ABC National Tournaments, as well as Arizona State and Tucson City Tournaments, winning the Class “C” Scratch and Handicap, with her team “Sugar and Spice,” in 1990. One of Pat’s highlights was bowling in the Tucson Open ProAm with PBA Hall of Famer, Mike Aulby.
One of Pat’s pleasures is seeing her extended family and friends at Lucky Strike in their leagues, as well as helping efforts for our veterans. Pat alone raised $2800 in the Tucson Metro

USBC Bowling for Veteran’s Link
In League tournament held last year, with 381 entries from league bowlers and donations.
Pat Ray has done a lot for bowling for our community.

Josh Moret
Tucson Metro USBC Hall of Fame Class of 2024 - Superior Performance
Josh Moret first started bowling at age 11 at Tucson Bowl. His mom told Josh he was swimming too much and needed to find something inside to do that was inexpensive.
Josh’s Grandfather was a league officer there and had a VIP card that he would use to go practice.
When Josh practiced, bowlers were starting to take interest in him and started to talk to his mom. Bowlers included Paul Colwell and Chuck Molno. Chuck let
him work in the Pro Shop at the age of 12. Josh would spend every day during the Summer or when school was out, from open to close shadowing Chuck. This was just the beginning of his bowling career and where he gained a ton of knowledge.
Josh shot his first 300 game at Tucson Bowl, while practicing with Ron Schloss and Bill Berryman. As a youth bowler, Josh Moret achieved City High Average, winning youth Singles, Doubles and Team Titles. Josh took 7th place in the National Youth Tournament in Las Vegas and was the Desert Open Champion three years in a row.
What keeps Josh bowling today are personal goals that have not been achieved yet and the close group of friends he bowls with. For more than 25 years, Josh has had a 200+ book average.
Josh Moret has an amazing list of stats and achievements as an adult, which include:
Thirty-three certified 300 games, 12 certified 800 series, Arizona State Doubles title (2012) with Paul Colwell, two Arizona State Team Titles (2001, 2017), Arizona State Scratch All Events (2007), Tucson City Team Title (2007), an Arizona Classic Bowling Association Title and Complete Bowling Events Title and more than 40 Singles Scratch Local Tournament Titles, including: Challenge, King of the Hill, Sweepers and others.
Josh traveled and bowled on the PBA Tour for two years and was in the top 10 in PBA Regionals in multiple tournaments.
In 2021, Josh was part of Tucson bowling history, setting a four person team record, with the score of 1101, bowled at Tucson Bowl in the Brunswick Hot League. Josh bowled 278 with JJ Holman (276), Shawn Whitelaw (300), and Matt Berube (247).
Josh gives back to his bowling family, serving as a League President for several leagues.
One of Josh’s most unique efforts was his creation of the Senior/Non-Senior Sweeper Event to help build entries for the Senior Masters. This event was a success, which Josh let Tucson Metro USBC take over and has used the format for the Masters/Queens and Senior Masters event.
Josh Moret is one of those bowlers that you can count on coming to your tournaments and encouraging bowlers to take part.
David “Dave” Hyatt
Tucson Metro USBC Hall of Fame Class of 2024 - Superior Performance
Dave Started bowling in Junior leagues around 7 years old. He

moved from the West coast to the Midwest when he was 14. Bowling stopped until age 18 when he got a job in a bowling alley and joined a men's league. His wife Suzi and he moved to Tucson in August of 1986 and they joined a couple of mixed leagues, but it was not until the PBA Tour came to visit Golden Pin Lanes that he committed his interest to a passion.
Dave had always been a big fan of Earl Anthony and had a dream of joining the PBA. So after that tournament, Dave decided that he was going to get his PBA card and in 2002 qualified to do so. With kids and mortgage payments, traveling to tournaments was difficult at best, as many of our past Hall of Fame inductees found out as well. Dave Hyatt has managed to cash three times (two times as a regular and one time as a senior). No trophies or bragging rights, but a check is a check. Nationals this year 2024 will also be 20 years of bowling the Open. Dave has cashed in more than half of those tournaments, averaging close to 200.
Some highlights other than his many (8) 300’s and (4) 800’s are specifically an 805 series in the doubles competition in the Arizona State Tournament held at Golden Pin Lanes on June 4th, 2005. He was also part of a team that took the Class A Team All Events in the 62nd Annual City Tournament
- 2006. In the Tucson Metro Senior Open Championships Event Dave was “All Events Champion – Scratch” in 2017.
Bowling in leagues and tournaments has allowed Dave to make some great friends and acquaintances. He looks forward to seeing his friends each week. Dave has been a League President and officer for many leagues, most recently the Park Avenue Jewelers/Miller Lite League that bowls Wednesday’s at Fiesta Lane. It’s tricky to bowl with one individual as a teammate and then against them in a different league but for Dave He always wants them to do well either way, but just a little bit better when they’re bowling with instead of against. Both of his children, Derrick and Courtney have participated in juniors and Derrick now subs on his team when asked and available.
Kevin Smania
Tucson Metro USBC Hall of Fame - Class of 2024 Superior Performance
Kevin Smania didn’t start his bowling career until after high school. In high school, Kevin was a star athlete playing basketball.
When he was young, Kevin bowled a few times. His first league was at Davis Monthan Lanes, where his parents bowled in 1987. Kevin bowled his first
300 game and 800 series in that league that year.
Kevin’s first 300 was significant, when his father bowled his first 300 game, 28 days later in the same league and was featured in a story in a national bowling magazine. An article in the following issue, said a Father and Son did it on the same day, Dick Weber and Pete Weber. If you have to get beat by someone, why not then.
Kevin joined the PBA tour in the 90’s and competed in 40 events, making the top 24 several times.
Coming back home to Tucson to bowl is always where he loved and did some of his best bowling.
Kevin won a Tucson Bowling Association Doubles Title in 1992, Team Titles in 2002 and 2011. He set the City of Tucson high average of 234 in the 2007/2008 season. Kevin has won five Arizona Classic Bowling Association Singles Titles, two Amateur Bowling Tour Titles. He has 44 sanctioned 300 games and 21, 800 series in his career.
Kevin also has a very unique accomplishment, a Andy Varipapa 900 series. Kevin bowled a 300 game in his last game in league at Lucky Strike Lanes and then two days later, bowled a 300, for his first two games at Fiesta Lanes, for which he was subbing for Tucson bowling Hall of Famer, Kary Harris.
Kevin Smania is a humble and gracious person that exemplifies good sportsmanship in the sport of bowling. He is an accomplished bowler and has good blood lines, his parents and sister are accomplished bowlers. Bowling has given him so much more, Kevin can thank bowling for his two children, as he met their mom at the bowling lanes.
Tucson Metro USBC congratulates the Hall of Fame Class of 2024. Tucson Metro USBC wants to thank the past Hall of Fame Inductees who attended, as well as the friends and family of this year's inductees and bowlers. Thank you to Candy Prokosch, Shannon Moret and Fiesta Lanes for hosting the event and the Doubles and Singles competition for the City Open Championships. Tucson Metro USBC would also like to thank Don Jones and Sahuaro Trophy for their work on the awards and continued partnership with Tucson Metro USBC.

2024 TAT
Amateur Nationals
February 19-25, 2024; Gold Coast; Las Vegas, Nevada

Another record breaking event at the 2024 TAT Nationals in Las Vegas! We had a great week of competition with 1,400 bowlers, 14,000 games bowled, and 5,900 entries in all events! The TAT paid out over $700,000 in Cash & Prizes last week at Gold Coast in Las Vegas, sponsored by Storm Bowling.
The finals paid out over $300,000 on February 25th with an exciting Championship Match. It was any ones game to win then Marvin Hale hit 4 in a row to run away from field to win the TAT Crystal Cup and $20,000. Unfortunately, Marvin did not pay the $10 Progressive Pot to receive the $10,000 Bonus and shot at the TAT Progressive Pot. The good news is the $90,640 will carry over to July where we are raising the 1st Place prize to $25,000 if you are in the Progressive Pot while also raising the VIP Prize list.
The 2024 TAT Nationals paid out a total of $622,500 in one week of Amateur competition. We also gave out 1047 Storm Bowling balls and lots of TAT Merchandise throughout the week.
TAT Championship Match
Marvin Hale $20,000
Ole Johnny Lislien $12,500
Darryl McDuffie $ 7,000
Rogario Bachi $ 6,000
Luis Fernandez $ 5,000

BTC at Cerbat Lanes, February 18, 2024

Mr. Hughes won the senior division and carried his momentum into the Championship match vs a talented opponent named Ty Sherwood (winner of the mens division). Don took advantage of two unfortunate opens by Sherwood to go on a secure the win.
Congrats to Bre Jones who won the women's division. Scores soared as Kevin Beers shot an astounding 824
in his qualifying round...289-236-299. The man was putting on a clinic!!!
THANK YOU Krysta Deleon, Frank Deleon, Dan Nadeau & Tammi Leonard Nadeau , and your very courteous staff as you all made this a wonderful day of bowling. We love and appreciate you. THANK YOU to all the bowlers in Kingman and those of you who traveled from Tucson, Phoenix, Laughlin, Las Vegas, and surrounding areas. Tim & I are grateful for all of you

New Bowlero Youth Classic Tournaments Provide Scholarship Opportunities for Junior Bowlers
More than $1 Million in SMART Scholarships to be awarded
Today’s junior bowlers have numerous opportunities to earn scholarship funds, and Bowlero just upped the ante with the announcement of the Bowlero Youth Classic, a series of 40 junior tournaments to be held across the country from March through June 2024.
Each tournament will have three age divisions: 9 Years Old & Under, 10 – 13 Years Old and 15 – 17 Years Old. Every age division will offer guaranteed SMART payouts of $4,000 for first place, $2,000 for second place, $1,250 for third place and $750 for fourth place. Additional scholarships will be awarded at a ratio of one for every three entries. A total of over $1 Million in SMART funds is expected to be awarded in these 40 events.
The Bowlero Youth Classic is also a PBA Jr. Affiliate tournament, so PBA Jr. members who participate will earn points for the

2024 PBA Jr. Jim Welch Memorial Scholarship.
Bowlers will bowl four games in the tournament, and standings will be based on each bowlers four-game scratch total. Entry fee for each tournament is only $40, and junior bowlers may participate in more than one squad at each location; as well as multiple locations. The first two events kickoff the weekend of March 2 in Mechanicsville, VA and Tamarac, FL, followed by three more events on March 9 in Texas, Arizona and Connecticut. The entire schedule and registration for each event can be found at https://www.bowlero. com/bowlero-youth-classic
NORTHERN Arizona Bowlerettes

February is TRADITIONALLY the month of ROMANCE and the NORTHERN Arizona Bowlerettes just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to bowl No-tap! The ladies came from as far South as the Valley and as far West as Kingman to SWEET-talk the lanes into giving them lots of strikes! 68 fabulous females gathered at Plaza Bowl on Saturday, February 17th, 2024, to bowl those No-tap games! Owner Brian Miller was ready with his trademark smile and hot coffee! The Virtue Pro Shop was even open for our bowling needs!

Roll Back to March 2010
The March 2010 Desert Bowler Headlined the Passing of Red Wilson Below is the Front Page article
For 65 years Arizona’s Keglers learned bowling from Arizona’s “Father of Bowling,” Red Wilson A City of Phoenix Bowling Champion for Sixteen Years Winner of more than 30 Major Bowling Titles

If you went with Red Wilson anywhere in the Valley, you could be sure someone would recognize him and be delighted to meet him again. Either Red had taught them how to bowl or they remembered him because he was a regular in the Arizona Republic’s sports pages for four decades as a bowling champion. One of Arizona’s most beloved bowlers, Wilson passed away February 28, 2010 in Phoenix.

Roland “Red” H. Wilson was born in McMinnville, Tennessee in 1916 and came to Phoenix with his family in 1927 at the age of 11. Wilson’s family owned a small grocery in downtown Phoenix and he became an enthusiastic athlete who organized the first softball league in Phoenix. Wilson, a pioneer of bowling in Phoenix, first owned “Southern Lanes” and then became the co-owner of “Red Wilson’s Bowling Supply” with his wife, Leslie McClanahan.
Wilson started bowling in 1936 and dominated the 1941 Phoenix tournaments. He averaged 171 the first year, 188 his second year and then for 36 years averaged near 200. He was a member of Arizona’s championship teams in 1950 and 1966. In 1950 the Wilsons built “Southern Lanes” bowling alley at 5600 South Central. It was an eight-lane house that they owned with partner Jim Thurmond. The Wilsons’ bowling supply store opened in 1956 at 16th Street north of Oak Street and they operated that store for 24 years.
Wilson helped organize the first American Bowling Congress in 1941 by rounding up teams, is a life member of the GPBA and served as its president. In his many years as a sanctioned bowler, Wilson averaged over 200 in league play several times and in the summer of 1954 had the amazing average of
218 for 40 games. He bowled in 65 consecutive Arizona State tournaments and was a two-time Arizona singles and doubles State Champion. He’s had better than a 190 average for 28 consecutive seasons and rolled two 300 games, a total of forty 700 series in competition, including a 747 high.
In 1986 at 70 years old, Wilson averaged 183 in 52 games and at that time his daughter, Susan, followed in his footsteps and was both a city and state champion bowler with the highest average.
In total Wilson won at least 170 awards and highly valued his 65year state participation in Arizona bowling. He was the only charter member in the bowlers’ division of the Hall of Fame and prized his unique 300-game award. Wilson won more than 30 major bowling titles including 16 Phoenix city championships with four titles in all-events, six in team, five in doubles and one in singles. He is also one of the five Charter members of the Arizona Classic Bowlers Association.
“Red” was a devoted husband, father, and family man, a friend to everyone he met, and an avid sportsman who golfed with his beloved daughter Susan Green until he was 90. Wilson especially enjoyed spending time with children of the family, Riley, Karis, Lindsay, Mark, Sean, and Zariah.
Red leaves behind his wife of 66 years, Leslie Wilson, sister Glenna Guy, grandson Ryan Wilson and wife Noelle, grandson Zachary Green and wife Shanna, niece Janet Walk and husband Bob, niece Jamie Kellogg and husband Cal, and hundreds of friends across Arizona.
Memorial services were held on Wednesday, March 3rd at Orangewood Presbyterian Church.
Looking At Life Through Rose Colored Glasses
by Dave WilliamsIf there was ever anyone that looked at life through rose colored glasses — tending to see everything in a positive light — that person would have to be Carol Mancini. She passed away last week at the age of 88.
Carol was extremely optimistic. That’s what I remember most during my conversations with her, in person or over the phone. I must have met Carol for the first time while working for AMF in San Diego. She was one of the top bowlers in the area. Carol bowled at the palatial Parkway Bowl in El Cajon.
I can remember driving along Interstate 8 and getting off at the Fletcher Parkway exit to visit Parkway Bowl in the Big Box Valley. It was a breathtaking view, and so was the bowling center, with 60 lanes and 2 movie theaters. It was operated by SRO Bowling Centers, a chain headquartered in Seattle. They also operated La Mesa Bowl, a 56 lane establishment located just west of El Cajon.
In Jonathan Garza’s feature article on Carol last week, we learned that she married Nick Mancini, one of the great bowling promoters of the day, in 1970. Prior to that Carol was married to Harold Woodruff, and they were blessed with three children in the first seven years that they were married — Bette, Wendy and Brian.
Nick and Carol would go on from Parkway Bowl to even greater fame at Grand Central Bowl in Glendale, where they started the Hot-Pot No-Tap in the 1970’s. Many of my favorite bowling stories revolve around Saturday evenings spent at Grand Central Bowl while stationed for AMF in the San Fernando Valley.
Whenever my duties while working for AMF would allow, I could be found at Grand Central Bowl on Saturday night, enjoying the tremendous format provided by Nick, Carol, “Easy” Anderson, and the rest of the staff. Everything about Grand Central was entertaining, from the difficult lane conditions (that made no-tap fun), to the money that could be had for an insured no-tap 300 game, worth $100 each. Top notch players of the day, including Fred Conner, Jack Andolina, Hobo Booth, Phil Kapsimallis, Butch Soper and others would join me in what began to look like a PBA regional event.
When I left Southern California, first for Chicago and then on to the
corporate offices for AMF in New York, I kept in touch with Carol, who by this time had purchased the California Bowling News with proprietor Charles Kinstler. She enjoyed the promotional releases that I would provide about AMF, and often called to complement me on the articles. I never really thought that much about them, because I had two of the greatest minds in bowling (Jack Graziano and John Mazey) proofreading the bulletins.
It’s interesting that in Garza’s tribute, he mentions that one of Carol’s biggest assets was an ability to recruit individuals to do volunteer work. Looking back on our almost 50 year friendship, I would have to say that’s exactly what she and co-editor Dean Lopez did when the COVID crisis struck and there was a lack of information being provided to the newspaper.
Carol and Dean convinced me to provide a weekly column, rather than monthly, to take the place of all the missing league scores. Another that encouraged me to go weekly was Lynn Matsubara of the Cal USBC Newsletter, who came up with the “Dave’s Corner” moniker, which now appears in bowling newspapers from coast to coast. Writing the column has become the highlight of my life in retirement.
I have so many memories of the California Bowling News, dating back to when I was a youth bowler at L & L Lanes in Northern California. Every Friday a bundle of the papers would arrive and I would take one home and spend the weekend checking out all of the articles with the top scores in fine print. Although I never met Helen Kibbe or Jesse Dudley, their bowling prowess had a profound effect upon me to this day. I often conclude an article with Dudley’s “…” at the end of my column.
Not enough can be said about former editor and publisher Ken Lowman, who I am honored to have nominated for the IBMA Meritorious Service award in 2018. He was an eclectic man with many different talents, which included being a musician for Popeye the Sailor, and other cartoons. Another former editor, Bob Johnson, has been my life long best friend. We both share a love for Charles M. Schulz and the Peanuts comic strip, as well as bowling.
I also have many fond memories of the individuals at California Bowling News that made it happen. In addition to those already mentioned above, we have advertising manager Lillian Oak, historian/photographer Frank Kietz, opinion columnist Dick Stoeffler (also host of TV Bowling on KTLA), and Yvonne Buchanan… the lady who typeset all those

pages before computers! But perhaps none of those memories would have been made possible without the support, encouragement and friendship of Carol Mancini.
Thanks to Wendy Woodruff, Carol’s daughter, for assisting with the information provided in this

Chris Klerk's 844 Series Highlights MMA 67th Open

Mesa - This foursome of Chris Klerk, Kevin Jenkins, Andrew Cain, and Dave Cirigliano have been bowling together as a group for a long time now in local and state tournaments under the banner of Bowling Dynamics. And representing the Valley by doing what they do best on the lanes.
With that being said, on any given weekend any one of them can step up to the plate and deliver a big game and big series. That hopefully will carry them to an individual and team title at the end of the tournament competition.
At the 67th Mesa Metro Open at Bowlero Mesa on Saturday morning February 17th, they had a couple of those type runs. One of which came from Chris who started the singles event with the first 24 strikes in-arow.
“I’ve been bowling for a long time, and that’s the longest string I’ve had to start a set," said Chris. "It’s crazy to look back at it now and think I felt like 36 in-a-row was possible. I’ve always been amazed at people being able to shoot 900 and all the things that must go right for that to happen!"
Even though he didn't roll that coveted 900 series on this particular morning, he still has to be very stoked at what he accomplished on lanes 11 and 12. By rolling games of: 300-300-244, for an 844 series. This was good enough for him to take the unofficial top spot in the Singles D 210 and higher scratch division, after the first weekend of play.
This is the second time within the last month, that an Arizona bowler. Rolled a 800 series during tournament competition. At the 74th Annual Tucson Women's Open Championships. Which took place at Lucky Strike Bowl in Tucson. Michelle McNew rolled games of: 229-300-300 for an 829 series. She accomplished this feat during the doubles competition on Sunday January 28, 2024, on lanes 15 and 16.
"I haven’t bowled a lot since Thanksgiving, so this was my second tournament since then. While my expectations weren’t high given how little I’ve competed. My goal every time is give my best to try and win," he said, of his mindset going into a tournament. "For me it’s always a matter of taking it one shot at a time, and I did a pretty good job of
that through the whole day."
And yes, he did. If you were a spectator on this morning and watched him bowl. His first 24 shots were flush in the pocket. He really felt he could keep the streak going at the beginning of game three. But something happened in the first frame that even caught him a little off guard.
"What’s funny is that first shot of the third game (25th shot) was pretty good. Just a flush 7-pin stood. I definitely felt like I could start another string, but for whatever reason once the string ended, I found it harder to keep my ball speed in check," he said, of his streak ending at 24 strikes in-a-row. "Maybe it was some left-over adrenaline and the letdown of the string ending that my focus wasn’t as good for a few shots. But I thankfully was still able to regroup to shoot a 244 to close out the set."
The 844 series he rolled at the MMA Open is his new personal best high series. The ball he used was the Track Theorem. His previous high series was 834, shot at an ACBA back in 2009 at AMF Tempe Village.
"It’s a new ball, so it’ll be in my arsenal for a while and I wouldn’t count out adding a second one," he said, of the ball that brought him his new highest series. "That ball is special!"
In fact, it was a transition in the lanes during his double's competition. That told him it was time to switch balls to the Track Theorem.
"My ball reaction in doubles was starting to labor in the middle of game two, so once I made a ball change to the Track Theorem in the 10th frame of that game. I could quickly see it was the right move," he said, of the ball switch. "While I could never have guessed how good it would be. I had a good feeling from what I saw and how well it went through the pins. As we finished doubles and went into singles."
Bowlero Mesa is a house it seems to be a hit and miss for him when it comes to high scores. He does feel like over time, he has a better understanding of the characteristics of the house, and what he needs to do for more successful results. He feels he seems to have had more success there over the last season or two.
"I enjoyed that feeling all day, and it's still a bit crazy for me to think back on it a few days later," he said, of his two perfect games and 844 series. "It’s something I’ve thought back on a few times in the following days. It was a fun ride and a cool accomplishment."
Chris is a Contract and Procurement Manager for a healthcare company called United Urology Group. He manages the Contracting Program for all locations nationwide and is also the Supply Chain resource for all locations on the West Coast. Bowling has always given him that competitive outlet and allowed him to travel the world to compete. While he doesn't get the chance to do it as much as he did in the past, it’s been a great combination during his career.
When comparing this to other ac-
complishments, Chris has had in his career he said: "I have a really hard time picking one, as I have three accomplishments that I hold in very high regard. The first, is winning our USBC Open Championships Eagle for Team All-Events (2011). The second, is making Jr. Team USA and winning a silver medal in the World Championships in Thailand (2002). And the third, is winning the True Amateur Tournament in Las Vegas (2005). All three are special to me for different reasons. As for a goal for the future, I want to be able to say I’ve won multiple USBC Open Championship Eagles."
It is really true what is said about international competition. You really do get caught up in the moment if you win a medal for your country. And when you are on the podium, when the national anthem is being played, pride and emotions do take over the moment.
"Representing the USA in at the World Championships in Thailand, was an amazing experience! Truly something I won’t ever forget. If I recall correctly, individually, I feel like it was an average performance. But I definitely remember pairing with Matt Gilman in doubles for our silver medal," he said, of the experience. "After game one, we were near the bottom of the standings, and fought our way back up to 2nd at the end of the block. Truly an example of the reason to never give up!"
The second run for the group came from Dave Cirigliano and Andrew Cain as they lead the pack with a 1,538 in the Doubles D 420 and higher scratch division. Chris and Kevin Jenkins are in third place at 1,449. In the All Events 210 and higher scratch Division D, Chris is the unofficial leader at 2,204, Andrew is second at 2,188, and Dave third at 2,158. In the Team D 840 and higher scratch division, Bowling Dynamics currently unofficially sits in third place at 2,671 after the first weekend of play.
"Andrew Cain, Dave Cirigliano and Kevin Jenkins have been close friends for a long time and bowling with them is always enjoyable! I think we’re all lucky to have each other and we’ve all been fortunate to have success through the years at many levels," Chris says, of their success. "It’s very beneficial to have that type of experience from each of us, and to talk about the game, the challenges we may be facing, and potential ideas to address them as we truly want to see each other succeed."
Chris also won the New Mexico Open in 2009. He ran the stepladder, and in the title match he was fortunate enough to beat Josh Blanchard.
“These accomplishments are hard to compare," he said "But both are memorable moments.”
And what is he thinking when it comes to his future in bowling?
"Bowling is a game you never master and is constantly evolving. As I’ve gotten older and responsibilities and priorities have changed, the time to bowl has reduced and I don’t necessarily have a “level” I want to
be at in a given time frame," he said, of his future outlook in the game. "I don’t know if my game is physically as good as it was 5-10 years back, but I think my knowledge of the game and equipment is much sharper and that helps make up for that. As time allows, I’ll always work to try and learn more and get better, and that takes discipline and hard work. With those qualities, I always believe you can achieve whatever goals you want!"
One could only imagine what kind of week it was for Chris. When the second weekend of play took place in the 67th MMA Open on Februray 24-25 at Bowlero Mesa. Wondering if anyone else would shoot a 300 game, and a high 800 series. There was a second 300 game rolled by Clay Fritz on Sunday morning February 18th, during doubles and singles competition. But, no one else would roll a high scratch 800 series.
"With a score that big, if someone beats it, you just have to congratulate them as that’s a big accomplishment," he said, of the second weekend of scores being posted on the Bowl Mesa webpage. "I would say I was wondering more if my AllEvents total would hold up. As of the two,I felt like that was a more realistic score to be beat."
He does not have to worry anymore. When the unofficial results of the second weekend of play, were posted on the MMA webpage on Monday February 26. In Singles D, (210 & Higher), he is still unofficially in first place. The top 10 in this Division are as follows: Scratch 1 Klerk Chris T. 844 Chandler, AZ. 2 Cirigliano David J. 760 Chandler, AZ. 3 Wakefield Kyle 750 Mesa, AZ. 4 Wiley Robert A. 749 Sun City West, AZ. 5 Pasalano George A. 748 Mesa, AZ. 6 Finch Shawn D. 732 Gilbert, AZ. 7 LaPointe Greg 729 Phoenix, AZ. 8 Penwell Justin A. 722 Casa Grande, AZ. 9 Tom Matt A. 721 Surprise, AZ. 10 Cain Andrew 720 Chandler, AZ.
In All Events, D (210 & Higher), Scratch 1 Klerk Chris T. 2,204 Chandler, AZ. 2 Cain Andrew 2,188 Chandler, AZ. 3 Finch Shawn D. 2,162 Gilbert, AZ. 4 Aemisegger Curtis 2,160 Sun City West, AZ. 5 Pasalano George A. 2,158 Mesa, AZ 5 Cirigliano David J. 2,158 Chandler, AZ. 7 McIntyre Travis B. 2,145 Tempe, AZ. 8 Ingram Christopher G. 2,123 Tempe, AZ. 9 Artis Wayne Jr 2,119 Gilbert, AZ. 10 Wiley Robert A. 2,118 Waddell, AZ.
"It’ll definitely be a feeling of accomplishment when the results are official!," he said, of how he will feel when the 67th MMA Open results become official. "At some point in my career, I hope to be inducted to at least the local and state association Hall of Fames. And winning titles like these, are a critical step to achieving that."
The 844 series he bowled on the morning of February 17, 2024. Will always be a constant reminder of what is possible to achieve in the game of bowling. And hopefully, becoming a member of the local and state Hall of Fames in his bowling future.
