Once again, the festival reaches beyond Derry City, with events in neighbouring Strabane and Letterkenny. Along with performances from multi-talented international and local groups, the festival will also platform Grammy-nominated, award-winning professional vocal ensemble Tenebrae, who promise to be a festival highlight at the Guildhall.

PROGRAMME NOTES Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827)
Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92 Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony is music propelled by rhythm. From its expansive opening to the irrepressible energy of its finale, the work has a remarkable sense of forward motion, earning it a place among the composer’s most exhilarating and immediately engaging symphonies. Beethoven began work on the symphony in 1811, completing it the following year. Its first performance took place in Vienna in December 1813 at a benefit concert for soldiers wounded in the Napoleonic Wars, with Beethoven himself conducting. The occasion was an extraordinary success, and the second movement proved so popular that it had to be repeated. The symphony begins not with the expected burst of energy but with a substantial slow introduction. Broad orchestral gestures gradually build anticipation before a repeated rhythmic figure launches the Vivace. From this deceptively simple idea, Beethoven creates a movement of extraordinary vitality, allowing rhythm to drive the music almost relentlessly forward. The celebrated Allegretto that follows offers a striking contrast. Its persistent rhythmic pulse emerges quietly in the lower strings before passing through the orchestra, accumulating layers of sound and intensity. Although often heard as solemn or processional, the movement continually shifts between darkness and light, restraint and dramatic release. The third movement is a vigorous Presto, bursting with sudden contrasts and changes of direction. Its racing outer sections alternate with a broader trio, which Beethoven unexpectedly brings back for a second appearance before driving the movement towards its emphatic conclusion. Any remaining restraint disappears in the Allegro con brio finale. Here Beethoven pushes the orchestra into music of almost breathless momentum. Rhythmic patterns repeat and intensify, the energy mounting until the symphony reaches its jubilant conclusion. Richard Wagner would later famously describe the Seventh Symphony as the “apotheosis of the dance” - an enduring description of a work in which rhythm itself seems to become the principal dramatic force.
16
Opening Gala: Beethoven - Triumph & Transcendence
Christ on the Mount of Olives, Op. 85 Christus am Ölberge If the Seventh Symphony reveals Beethoven at his most rhythmically exuberant, Christ on the Mount of Olives takes us into an altogether different dramatic world. Beethoven’s only oratorio, Christus am Ölberge was composed in 1803 and first performed in Vienna that April. The work focuses on a remarkably concentrated moment from the Passion story: Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, confronting the suffering and death that await him. Rather than attempting to tell the complete Passion narrative, Beethoven and his librettist Franz Xaver Huber focus on its human and emotional drama. Christ is presented not as a distant figure, but as one experiencing fear, anguish, courage and, ultimately, acceptance. This intensely human portrayal gives the work much of its distinctive character. The oratorio opens in darkness. An orchestral introduction establishes an atmosphere of tension before Jesus, sung by a tenor, enters alone in prayer. His music moves between anguish and resolution as he struggles with the fate before him. The appearance of the Seraph, sung by a soprano, brings a different colour to the drama. The angel announces that Christ’s sacrifice will bring salvation, while the chorus expands the intimate personal struggle into something larger and more universal. The arrival of the soldiers transforms the atmosphere again. Beethoven responds with music of increasing theatrical urgency as Jesus is confronted, and Peter, sung by a bass, reacts with anger and draws his sword. Christ rejects violence, and the drama turns from confrontation towards acceptance and redemption. Throughout the oratorio, Beethoven combines the traditions of sacred choral writing with the instincts of a composer deeply drawn to the theatre. Solo arias, ensembles and powerful choruses give the work an operatic immediacy, while the orchestra plays a central role in shaping its emotional journey.
17
Opening Gala: Beethoven - Triumph & Transcendence
The work culminates not in the darkness with which it began, but in affirmation. Soloists, chorus and orchestra come together in an increasingly jubilant conclusion, transforming the private anguish of Gethsemane into a powerful celebration of redemption and hope. Written during one of the most significant periods of Beethoven’s life – as he confronted the devastating reality of his increasing deafness – Christ on the Mount of Olives explores an individual facing suffering, struggling against it and ultimately finding the strength to move beyond despair. Heard alongside the Seventh Symphony, it reveals two compelling sides of Beethoven: the dramatist fascinated by human struggle, and the symphonist capable of unleashing extraordinary collective energy.

PROGRAMME NOTES Light, prayer, reflection and transcendence run through this evening’s programme, bringing together sacred choral music spanning more than four centuries. Renaissance polyphony sits alongside music of our own time, familiar texts are heard afresh and moments of luminous stillness give way to music of profound intensity.
Ivo Antognini – Dum aurora Swiss composer Ivo Antognini is known for a choral style rich in colour, expressive harmony and flowing vocal lines. Dum aurora, its title evoking the coming of dawn, opens the programme in a world of light and awakening. Layers of sound emerge and recede, creating a sense of music gradually illuminating the space and introducing one of the evening’s recurring ideas: the journey from darkness towards light. Felix Mendelssohn – Denn er hat seinen Engeln befohlen Mendelssohn’s Denn er hat seinen Engeln befohlen (“For He shall give His angels charge over thee”) sets words from Psalm 91. Composed in 1844 and later incorporated into Elijah, it presents its celestial subject with tenderness rather than grandeur. Warm, flowing vocal lines create an atmosphere of protection and reassurance, revealing Mendelssohn’s extraordinary command of choral balance and counterpoint. Jessica Ulusoy-Horsley – Engelsmusik The celestial theme continues in Jessica Ulusoy-Horsley’s Engelsmusik, heard in two movements, colours of light’s sound and in between. Voice becomes texture and atmosphere as much as melody, exploring the spaces between sound and silence, light and darkness, the physical and the spiritual. Its contemporary sound world provides a striking bridge between Mendelssohn and the Renaissance music that follows. William Byrd – Ave verum corpus William Byrd’s Ave verum corpus, published in 1605, is one of the treasures of Renaissance sacred music. Setting the Eucharistic text “Hail, true body”, its four vocal lines unfold with remarkable restraint and clarity. Byrd’s Catholic faith was practised amid the religious tensions of Elizabethan England, lending his Latin sacred music particular historical resonance. Yet its enduring power lies in its intimacy: an intensely personal prayer expressed with extraordinary economy. Roderick Williams – Ave verum corpus re-imagined Roderick Williams’ Ave verum corpus re-imagined invites us to hear Byrd’s music through contemporary ears. Rather than simply reproducing the original, Williams creates a conversation between past and present, allowing traces of Byrd’s familiar musical world to be refracted through a modern choral language. Heard directly after Byrd, the two settings demonstrate how centuries-old music can continue to inspire new creative responses.

Samuel Barber – Agnus Dei Samuel Barber created his Agnus Dei in 1967 by setting the text of the Mass to his celebrated Adagio for Strings. Transferred to voices, its long, arching phrases acquire an intensely human quality. The music gradually builds in range and emotional pressure towards an extraordinary climax before subsiding into the final plea, dona nobis pacem — “grant us peace”. INTERVAL Francis Poulenc – Quatre motets pour un temps de pénitence Composed in 1938-39, Poulenc’s Quatre motets pour un temps de pénitence (“Four motets for a time of penitence”) draws upon texts associated with Holy Week and Christ’s Passion. Across Timor et tremor, Vinea mea electa, Tenebrae factae sunt and Tristis est anima mea, Poulenc moves through fear, betrayal, darkness and anguish. The music combines stark harmonic clashes with passages of extraordinary tenderness and simplicity. Poulenc does not merely illustrate these sacred texts; his constantly shifting musical language intensifies their drama, creating a deeply expressive meditation on suffering and faith. Frank Martin – Mass for Double Choir The programme culminates in Frank Martin’s Mass for Double Choir, one of the great unaccompanied choral works of the 20th century. Composed during the 1920s, it remained unperformed for decades: Martin regarded the work as a deeply personal expression of faith and initially had no wish for it to be heard publicly. Written for two four-part choirs, the Mass draws together echoes of Gregorian chant and Renaissance polyphony with Martin’s distinctive modern harmonic language. The two choirs answer, overlap and unite across the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus Dei, moving between intimate prayer and magnificent expanses of sound. In the closing Agnus Dei, a text heard earlier in Barber’s setting returns in a very different musical world. After a programme that has travelled through dawn and angels, devotion, suffering and penitence, Martin’s final prayer for peace brings the evening to a contemplative close.
