FROM THE PUBLISHER It’s finally 2021 – and with any luck, we can start putting 2020 behind us.

Obviously COVID is still here and we will most likely be coping with it for some time to come. I’m optimistic, though, that things will improve and we will learn to live with it. I’m guessing that like 9/11, our society will forever be changed in some regards - but we will adapt and move forward.

My biggest concern moving forward, though, isn’t about COVID itself; but how we function as a nation – ONE NATION. It was seemingly a perfect storm with the riots and civil unrest, COVID and the ensuing shutdowns, and of course the election and the controversy surrounding the results. Regardless of what caused what, what political forces you support, or conspiracies you believe in – we all have to recognize that our nation and really many of our core beliefs have taken a beating this past year.

I’m not bringing this up as a political statement – and YES, I know that this is a “motorcycle mag”.

However, I’ve always believed that our magazine is more about our lifestyle and interests as riders – rather than simply about the machines we ride. Outsiders may define us by the bikes and leathers, but it’s our sense of brotherhood and celebration of freedom that unites our community. We love our country and recognize that the folks we ride with and meet along the road are brothers and sisters. That’s regardless of color, race, religion – or any other classification that others might choose to divide us by.

This month’s Custom Bike Feature is from Donn Ogilvie and Evil Iron Customs from Canal Winchester. It‘s named “We the People” and is a celebration of our nation, our way of life, and the US Constitution that protects it all. It’s a beautiful bike that won awards across the country – from Sturgis to Daytona – as people both appreciated the craftsmanship and the message it carried.

We chose to feature this bike as we head into 2021 – not only because it’s an incredible bike – but because of what it represents.

We are all AMERICANS. We have basic freedoms that are built upon certain core beliefs – which are represented in the Constitution and woven in the fabric of our communities. As BIKERS – we celebrate these freedoms as we head out onto the open road and often find ourselves riding with total strangers that become brothers as the miles pass by. It’s about RESPECT – paying it out as earned and due, and expecting it from those we come across. It’s about HELPING those that need it and PROTECTING the innocent – while holding those ACCOUNTABLE that need to be.

We all gave up a lot this past year – in the name of COVID and the health of our nation, but we need to get back on our BIKES and ROAR INTO 2021. We need to reconnect with the friends and families that we “distanced” from in 2020. We need to help resurrect the events, businesses, and organizations that were put on hold as part of what we will simply call 2020.

Regardless of who’s in the White House and what CNN is reporting – we need to remember there are certain truths that we believe to be “self-evident”. There are certain FREEDOMS that we need to maintain and VALUES that we need to RE-AFFIRM. We need to RIDE FORWARD together as Americans – not divided but united in our core beliefs and love for our nation.

Online Registration Opens JANUARY 25th Inexperienced Riders is the biggest – MOST AVOIDABLE threat to the motorcycle community and Motorcycle Ohio is the easiest solution.

Motorcycle Ohio is the state agency charged with coordinating motorcycle training and awareness. They offer courses for new, intermediate, and advanced riders. Their goal is to help Ohioan learn how to ride a motorcycle safely – which is something WE CAN ALL APPRECIATE! Riders of all experience levels have something to learn by taking these classes – and for those considering getting their first bike, it’s an absolute NO BRAINER.

Motorcycle Ohio recently rolled out a cool new website that offers a wealth of information for riders – including the ability to register for classes online. www.Motorcycle.Ohio.gov You can also directly access the course registration portal by going to - https://services. dps.ohio.gov/MotorCycleOhioTraining/Student/Home

The Basic Rider Skills for the Returning Rider (BRS-RR) is for those over 18 years old who have ridden previously or have had a temporary permit for over one year. It is a one-day course, 2 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours riding a motorcycle, under the supervision of trained instructors. Cost: $50.00 for all individuals.

The Experienced Rider Skills (ERS) and Advanced Rider Skills (ARS) offers the experienced rider the opportunity to understand the principles of turning, braking, swerving, street strategies and traction control. These one-day courses offer classroom instruction and/or practicing the advanced principles of motorcycle riding using your own motorcycle. Cost: $50.00 for all individuals, including co-riders in the ERS. (No co-riders in the ARS) That’s right – it’s just $50 to take the Motorcycle Ohio training course, and they even provide the motorcycle for the Basic Rider Skills classes. And as if that’s not enough of a deal – some of the manufacturers, owners groups, and riding organizations even offer reimbursement for the cost of the classes. The HONDA RIDERS CLUB OF AMERICA and KAWASAKI GOOD TIME OWNERS CLUB offer reimbursement. The Harley Owners Group (HOG) offers bonus coupons and other special incentives.

As challenging as this year was – there’s every reason to believe that 2021 will be a blockbuster year for regional and local motorcycle events! Bikers and motorcycle enthusiasts experienced a year like no other – a year without many of the bike nights, rallies, and riding events that they have taken for granted for years. And for the few events that were able to be held, event organizers were blown away by the response.

Despite all the dire warnings, concerns, and protocols over COVID – event organizers have been reporting record years as riders want to get out! Increased demand and interest in riding and powersports in general is also substantiated by record sales of used bikes, parts, and accessories. Of course riding is the perfect social distancing activity, but other factors include less professional sports and more “personal time”. It all means that more folks are hitting the road and there’s no reason to think that next year will be even better as we move past the COVID crisis and surrounding hysteria of 2020.

So, we are encouraging event organizers to lock down dates and plans for 2021. It’s especially critical as many late season 2020 events have opted to re-schedule for Spring 2021 dates.

Many of these event organizers are hoping to pull off an early season version to replace their cancelled 2020 event – and still be able to host their regularly scheduled Late Summer / Fall event.

We would encourage everyone to email us with their event information and dates as soon as possible, especially if you’d like us there. We are excited to announce a RE-VAMPED Bike Show program w/ new SPONSORS and even MORE PRIZES / TROPHIES! We are also doing more HOT ROD / CUSTOM CAR / BIKE SHOWS as well – with new partners on board! We are looking to host more of these shows in combination with RACING events and RALLIES all across the MIDWEST. Would you look at that….2021 is finally here! Is it any different? I sure hope so! At this moment, it may look just the same, but let’s dig a little deeper…

We had a bit of a challenging year in 2020.

What we thought was going to bring great vision, brought a whole new look at life for all of us! Some of it was very eye opening.

Some of it was sad and a bit frustrating at times, but all in all, it was a time to reflect on what was most important to us.

New ways to communicate became the norm and I believe many learned a new appreciation for home school parents!

It all came down to change. And now we are in the beginnings of the changing of a New Year. New beginnings…God is a God of new beginnings and second chances. He isn’t the cause of bad things happening, He is the restorer of the good that comes out of the bad! He brings new life to dead things and causes the winter to turn into spring!

Time and time again, God, our heavenly Father, gets the rap for things He didn’t do.

Most often the things that happen are due to something man (or woman) has done himself. Starting in the very beginning in the Garden of Eden, (yes, it really existed), Eve listened to the snake (satan), Adam listened to Eve, even though he knew what God had said and did tell Eve prior to the snake wiggling his way into her brain that to eat the fruit was not good, however, curiosity killed the cat so to speak and BOOM! The sin of the world began. Again, God came in, dressed them up and though they had to leave the beautiful garden, He still provided for them. New beginnings.

flesh nature, we still come against the temptations and the trials of life that seem to overwhelm us, and even still we can get through them IF we only will reach out from behind the bush and ask our Father to help us simply by recognizing the One that was sent to rescue us, Jesus. New beginnings happen just by opening your heart and receiving the gift of love sent for all of us. It doesn’t matter if you ‘ate the apple’, it doesn’t matter what you have done or how worthless you think you are…God doesn’t see you that way, He sees the person He created and is just waiting for you to get reconnected to Him. For example, there is a story in the Bible that talks about a son who wanted his inheritance early, so his dad gave it to him. He went out and blew all the money on gambling, women, partying, you name it, he did it. Then the money ran out and he found himself working as a servant in a pigsty! He had nothing and was even eating the pig slop to stay alive! One day, he decided to go back to his father and offer to work for him as a servant. Well, all along, the father had been going on top of the hill to look for his son every day! When he saw the son coming, he ran to him and

That is how God is with us…He is waiting and watching for us to come home and nothing matters except that we are home.

His immeasurable love will cover the insurmountable sin!! Here is your chance for new beginnings. This is your moment to begin a new year with a fresh start and it is so simple that all you need do is simply say, “Jesus, I have made a mess of things and am done trying to get out of the mess myself, please forgive me. I receive your forgiveness and will go forward with you, leaving all the mess behind me.” Amen.

MotoAmerica and the King of the Baggers Invitational!

AMA was once the premier American road racing series which became a shell of itself after six years under Daytona Motorsports Group leadership. Although it was thought that DMG would be a good fit, running a motorcycle series did not produce the results imagined. No longer were there manufacturer backed teams and the money they brought to the sport. Subsequently, a shorter season, low spectator attendance and lack of television coverage all but killed American road racing.

It is 2015 and in comes MotoAmerica. Sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) and the Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) MotorAmerica is led by three-time 500 cc World Champion Wayne Rainey and the partnership at KRAVE Group. Motorcycle guys went to work with a desire to bring back American road racing at its finest. Since their first year, there has been a steady increase in attendance and television coverage is once again readily available.

However, when one thinks of MotoAmerica, I believe the first thing that would come to mind is sport bikes. Manufacturers such as Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Honda and KTM spread out over five classes that are Superbike, Supersport, Liqui Moly Junior Cup, Stock 1000 and Twins Cup. Well it is 2020 and MotoAmerica teamed up with Drag Specialties for the King of the Baggers Invitational at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. No one would ever imagine that Harley Davidson and Indian motorcycles would be spoken in the same sentence as MotoAmerica. Or that the likes of Josh Herrin or Ben Bostrom would be piloting these V-Twins. But that is exactly what happened. An eight-lap race with thirteen bikes in all: 11 Harley-Davidsons and two Indians.

The rules and race specs were fairly loose – with the most critical requirements seemingly to have the original frame and a full set of bags intact. Some were pretty close to stock baggers with side cases and stock upper fairings. Some had full carbonfiber body work. Budgets for these bikes range from $20,000 to $150,000 – with a full range of engine modifications including full turbos!

Tyler O’Hara – a veteran Supermoto and motocross racer – took the flag astride an S&S Indian Challenger, followed by Haley Gillim on a Vance and Hines prepped Harley-Davidson. The second Indian Challenger – a custom build from Roland Sands – came in 3rd.

First impressions have been favorable, and I have it on good authority that plans are to run several more of these events in 2021 – dates and locations yet to be determined.

WINTER ATV RIDING

4 Wheels on snowy trails beats 2 wheels on Icey Roads!

It’s wintertime in the Midwest and that means snow and ice, frigid temperatures, and less chances to ride our bikes!

However, it’s a great time to celebrate other powersports options more appropriate for the snow – ATV’s, Side by Sides, and snowmobiles!

Fun for the whole family!

One of the best things about ATV’s and Side by Sides is that you can ride together with the entire family – even on the same vehicle. I picked up a pair of Polaris Outlaw 50’s and our youngest contributors had a blast this past summer learning how to ride on them. A layer of snow just added a new factor and even more fun to riding for them!

Practical Applications Riding in the snow is an absolute blast - but if you are already invested in a street bike, you may be hesitant to take the plunge with another recreational vehicle. If you need to justify to yourself or someone else – there are a ton of practical applications for ATV’s, UTV’s, and Side by Sides. If you’ve got a lot of property or a farm, chances are that you may already have a four wheeled powersports vehicle, but if you’re in the suburbs and don’t have fields to roam or clear – don’t despair, chances are you still have a driveway that needs clearing in the winter!

A snowplow is an incredibly practical and fairly reasonably priced accessory to mount on an ATV or Side by Side. They can easily be put on and taken off, as needed. Even the most basic ATV’s will make short work of your driveway and it’s even kinda fun. The first snow storm we had this year, I found myself running up and down the street clearing all my neighbors driveways as well. (Just a couple minutes of work – and then how could they possibly complain about the quads racing through the backyards later?)

Prepping for Winter Riding Check Your Coolant Water and even old or diluted anti-freeze coolant can freeze in cold weather and you want to make sure that you don’t start the engine while it’s rock solid. Frozen coolant can cause the engine to overheat before all the lines and tank melt. You also risk damaging lines simply with the frozen anti-freeze. Your best bet is to add fresh anti-freeze at the end of summer as part of “winterizing” regardless of your plans to ride or store the ATV over the winter.

Check Tire Pressure Tire pressure can change about 1 psi for every 10 degrees in temperature change, so make sure you check your tires before heading out in the cold. Over-pressurized tires can blow and leave you stranded – or worse.

Let your engine heat up – before revving!

Keep the RPM’s low when first starting up your ATV when it’s frigid. This will allow the ice-cold oil to heat up and get fully circulated .

Pack / Plan for the Worst If you’re heading off for the trails or riding away from home, you always want to plan for the worst – regardless of the season.

During the Winter, that means considering the weather and getting stuck out in the elements.

Winch & Tow Strap – As always, a winch is your best friend (other than an actual two legged best friend) if you get stuck.

Snow and ice don’t change this – and actually increase the chance you’ll need the extra help. Even if you have a winch – you may still find yourself needed a tow strap in some situations.

It might be an easier option from the backend if you need a pull from someone without a winch. If you’re riding with others, you may find the need to tow someone as well.

Spare Clothes – A dry bag with extra socks, pants, long underwear, gloves, and maybe even a blanket makes sense.

Staying warm and dry is critical when out in the cold – so an extra set of clothes in a backpack or rear rack bag makes sense.

Snacks / Water – Always a good idea to pack – just in case of problems or you simply get hungry!

Just in case – First aid kit, trash bag (for wet clothes), matches, dry bag for your phone, compass (cell phones die or may not even work in the wilderness), and a flashlight. Even if you’re headed out during the day – winter months are the shortest days of the year in these parts and you could be only a few mishaps away from finding yourself stuck out at night.

Winter Trail Riding – Tips from ATV.com Our first rule of thumb is to never ride alone because getting stranded in normal conditions is one thing, but being left out in the cold is worse. Another good rule is to make sure it’s legal to ride your ATV in the winter and the trails allow quads.

Snowmobiles, first: The last thing you want to do is hack off a fellow powersports enthusiast. If you can ride on the snowmobile trails, remember sleds are way faster and quicker than ATVs, so be aware of your surroundings and pay attention at all times, especially in blind corners and long straights. It’s good to yield to snowmobiles and practice as much etiquette for these shared trails as possible.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T: Stay on the trails and respect all posted trail traffic signs (STOP, speed limit, etc.). Although you could ride off the trail because of the snow, your improper prints show disrespect.

•

Look Out Below: Riding in the winter also means you’ll be riding in the snow. Therefore it’s sort of like riding in the mud in that you can’t always see what’s beneath the surface. However, if you’re on a trail chances are pretty decent the path is safe and the snow is packed enough to offer safe travels. If you’re legally cutting a trail through new snow, however, beware of fallen trees, hidden boulders or camouflaged drop-offs.

Ice, Ice, Baby: Exercise caution when riding on frozen ponds, lakes and rivers. Remember, a good rule of thumb is to only venture out on a frozen lake with at least six inches of solid ice. Rivers, depending on where you live and how big the river is, vary so beware.

Follow the Leader: But do it carefully! Because of icy conditions and whiteouts from snow roost, it’s best to have larger following distances.

Gear The key to dressing for riding in the winter is LAYERING. By layering your clothing, you’re able to add or remove items as needed to finetune depending on the situation.

Layer 1 – Your first layer should be tighter to your skin and something that is designed for warmth and moisture absorption. Items such as “performance long underwear” is ideal – wicking away sweat and keeping your heat in.

Layer 2 – The second layer should not be super thick or bulky, but warmer and thicker than the first layer – think flannel and sweatpants.

Layer 3 – You’re looking for something wind and waterproof. GoreTex is king but any jacket and pants that are breathable and offer a waterproof shell works. If you’re layered below – you don’t need a lot in the outer jacket and pants. Their main job is to cut the wind and allow the snow to fall off.

Other items – Goggles – Cold weather goggles cover your vulnerable eyes and skin, protecting them from the cold and wind. Sunglasses lack the foam on the side and make you vulnerable to biting cold wind.

Goggles also offer more protection from sticks and other possible debris that gets kicked up.

Gloves – The best cold weather riding gloves keep your fingers warm while still allowing full movement so you can safely operate your vehicle. They should also allow you to grip the throttle and brakes, while offering protection as well. One of our favorites is Mechanix Wear Impact Pro Winter Gloves.

Boots - Good riding boots are essential – or you’ll find yourself miserable after a short time of riding in the winter. You need to find a good pair to keep your feet warm and dry – while also offering protection. They can’t be overly stiff – especially if you’re riding something with foot pegs!

Balaclavas / Face coverings – turning yourself into a “backwoods ninja” is essential to keeping you warm and comfortable while out riding in the snow.

Socks – Quality cold weather boot socks can make all the difference and are relatively inexpensive. You want to find s omething that can help whisk away the moisture and keep your toes toasty.

Recommended Machines We will be looking at recommended machines in next month’s Powersports Feature, however there are a few machines that we thought we’d mention.

Polaris Sportsman 450 The Polaris Sportsman is a legend in the industry – having more than enough power for trail riding, hunting, and even work around the ranch or simply clearing the driveway. They are considered unrivaled in terms of versatility and value – and can often be found on Facebook marketplace very reasonably used as well!

Honda Fourtax Foreman 4x4 Although it’s priced a bit more than many of its competitors – the Honda offers electronic fuel injection and a semi-automatic driving system that has various driving modes that are very rider friendly.

“The “We The People” idea came from my discomfort with some of the issues going on in the United States in 2020. I grew up believing in all that our constitution stands for. My father was a Marine and many of my friends throughout the years have been military and first responders. I appreciate all of them for serving and being there when we need them.

In April 2020, I started working on the concept of this bike. My timeline was fairly small as I needed to have the bike completed by August in order to debut it in Sturgis. We worked diligently at Evil Iron Customs to make this schedule happen.

Bluetooth Headsets- Mesh Intercom Brand Choice & Compatibility Fast forward to May, 2020- Sena introduced new Mesh models, the 50S and 50R, along with all-new Mesh 2.0 software. It worked work great right out of the box, and the new software resolved the Mesh problems on the 30K as well.

If you're thinking about getting a Bluetooth headset for the 2021 riding season, here is an update on where technology and the market is going, Basics First let me say that if you just want to use the headset with your phone or GPS, choose whatever brand and model fits your price range and works for you. If your needs include intercom with just one other person, an inexpensive Bluetooth-only model is still all you need. Sena and Cardo are the market leaders, and both have complete lines of headsets at different price points to fill these basic needs.

Now that the Cardo Packtalk line had some real competition, both companies upped their advertising and promotion. This raised customer awareness of Mesh benefits, bringing the technology into the mainstream. Holiday season sale pricing got a LOT of people to upgrade their older Bluetooth headsets to Mesh. If you've been thinking about upgrading, now is the time- the 2021 riding season is only a few months away.

Upgrading to Mesh intercom- Which Brand to Choose?

If you want intercom capability with 2 or more other riders in a group, Bluetooth quickly becomes cumbersome and unreliable.

Fortunately there is a better alternative available.

Mesh Intercom Mesh intercom technology allows riders to connect and communicate with each other without the need to pair individual headsets together. Group size can be up to 15 or more. All riders can freely change order, seamlessly leave and rejoin the group, and everyone within range can communicate with the group. Audio clarity and freedom from background noise is far superior to Bluetooth. (See Sidebars 1 & 2 for comparison of traditional Bluetooth and Mesh intercom ease of setup and use.)

Cardo introduced Mesh intercom with the Packtalk model in 2016.

It took Sena a couple of years to bring out their first (30K) Mesh headset. Unfortunately their initial implementation of Mesh had many shortcomings, so Sena customers were slow to adopt. Cardo did much better with Packtalk, but like Sena's 30K, both units were significantly more expensive than their Bluetoothonly counterparts, which still dominated their market.

Both Cardo and Sena have excellent Mesh implementations, but like their older Bluetooth intercom products, they are not compatible with each other. The most important question becomes "Which brand are my riding buddies using?" If everyone in your group is using the same brand of Mesh headset, connecting and communicating is as simple as having everyone tap their Mesh intercom button and being immediately connected.

Do not get suckered into buying a brand different than what your riding buddies are using! If it's currently a mixed group, try to get the minority brand users to switch to the majority brand.

Otherwise, you will be split into two groups- one for each brand.

Is there a Way to Connect Between Brands in Your Group?

Both brands include a feature called 'Universal Intercom," which enables one brand to connect with the other by spoofing a phone. The other brand pairs with the "phone" and connects by answering a "call" from the other unit. Here's how Universal Intercom can be used to connect brands: The majority brand Riders running group Mesh each initiate Universal Intercom to pair and connect with an individual minority brand rider. The majority group members stay connected in Mesh mode so the entire group can communicate. It's pretty tedious to set up but it can be done. Expect Universal Intercom connections to interfere with music, GPS and other functions. You have to decide if it's worth the trouble. Like I said before, it's MUCH better for all Riders to be on the same brand!

To Sum Up I've been riding with Mesh intercom most of the 2020 season.

The range is about the same as Bluetooth, audio quality better, background noise much less. Getting connected is so much easier and the hassles of keeping the group connected are gone.

Do yourself a favor and join the Mesh revolution for 2021!

Sidebar 1: Setting up a Bluetooth Group of Riders 1,2,3,4, (Who Are Going to Ride in That Order).

1. Manual pairing- Two Riders hold their intercom buttons for about 5 seconds until their headsets enter intercom pairing mode.

2. First Rider taps their intercom button to complete pairing 3. Both headsets reset and can now be connected for intercomFirst Rider is now paired with Second Rider 4. Rider 2 & 3 repeat steps 1-3 5. Rider 3 & 4 repeat steps 1-3 The above steps only need to be done once.

The below steps must be done each time the headsets are turned on and connected for a ride 6. Rider 1 taps their intercom button to connect to Rider 2 7. Rider 2 taps their intercom button to connect to Rider 3 8. Rider 3 taps their intercom button to connect to Rider 4 Weaknesses: 1. If Rider 2 or 3 drops out or changes order in the group, one or more of the remaining members will be disconnected.

2. Steps 1-5 only need to be done once unless the Rider order changes or a Rider drops out of the group. (Steps 4-6 must be done each time the group members power up) 3. Audio quality- Two Riders works well, three is fair, four is very poor and unstable.

Sidebar 2: Setting Up a Mesh Group of 4+ Riders (Who Can Ride in Any Order They Wish)

Sena and Cardo have slightly different Mesh Startup procedures.

Sena 30K, 50S: 1. Each Rider taps the Mesh button on their headset once to turn on Mesh intercom in Open mode. Done!

Any Sena headset within range running Mesh Open mode will be connected. If more group privacy is desired, there are two additional methods that involve a couple of extra steps to set up. The additional steps only need to be done one time and are remembered even if headsets are turned off.

Cardo Packtalk: 1. Each of the 4 riders turn on DMC Mesh intercom mode on their headset by pressing the Phone and Intercom buttons simultaneously.

2. All riders press and hold the Intercom button for 5 seconds until the LED flashes green quickly.

3. A single group creator taps their Intercom button. Their LED flashes red and green quickly.

4. Then the other three Riders tap their Intercom button within 2 minutes to complete the process. Done!

SHINE 'N IRON

M nshiners and Motorcycles Moonshiners have been around the US since the Whiskey Rebellion of 1790 – and to this day, there are still Americans who continue to craft their own whiskey and other liquors through homemade stills. In the Appalachian region of the country, it’s all part of the culture of the hills and moonshiners are revered as legends.

In 2011, the Discover Channel first aired Moonshiners – a reality based show that introduced the world of hillside distilleries and the people that brewed shine under the cloak of darkness in the woods. Moonshining legends such as Marvin “Popcorn” Sutton and up and coming shiner’s such as Josh and Crazy Chuck became nationwide celebrities for a craft that had previously been always practiced in secrecy and most thought was long gone.

About 5 years ago, I had the chance to meet James Hatfield of Hatfield’s Feudshine Garage at a COMBAT VETS MA Event in Fairfield. He was a professional bike builder – as well as moonshiner and copper still builder. He’s a descendent of the original Hatfield and McCoys and it could be argued that moonshining is in his blood.

We struck up a friendship and I began attending moonshine events in Tennesse, Kentucky, and eventually the Hillbilly Jam Events held in Maggie Valley, North Carolina. I met countless moonshiners at the events – including most of the ones featured in the Discover Channel TV Show. I already knew that bikers and hill folks had a lot in common, but I soon realized that Bike Builders and Moonshiners also shared a lot of common interests and passions. I turns out that crafting stills out of cooper and producing lightning in a bottle isn’t that far different than fabricating custom bikes or restoring vintage motorcycles. They both require an attention to detail and appreciation for tradition.

Amongst those involved in motorcycles and custom bikes are Josh and Crazy Chuck from the Moonshiners show. Both participate in Billy Lane’s Sons of Speed Vintage Motorcycle Racing – not only restoring and customizing 100 year old motorcycles, but also racing them around banked tarmac ovals reminiscent of early 20th century board-track racing.

Along the way I gained more and more of an appreciation for the art of moonshining and eventually built my own still. I’ve now started my own business – Northern Yankee Moonshine, offering a line of merchandise and possibly some sippin’ beverages in the future. This past year, I had the honor of being selected to compete on The Discover Channel’s second season of Moonshiner’s Master Distiller. The show is scheduled to air this winter – and you can check out The Discovery Channel or my facebook page for more information.

You ain’t real

My Brother Fisch said it so well in the November Edition.. I asked him to contribute more.

To all who try to hold me back, shackle my progress forward or try to slow my momentum or question the reason of my purpose.

I am on to all of you, the ones who judge my identity and character, but you have none of your own. I have heard whispers in the shadows about my sanity and mental stability but those who whisper do so because they have no voice of their own only exploiting the weakness of others so who is the one truly unstable?

I have witnessed those who always have their hand on the stick waiting for the moment anxiously and impatiently so they can quickly stir the cesspool of a pot we call our lives and to try to keep us off balance or spinning out of control whenever they seize the opportunity and chance to cause us missed opportunities or put in more effort to accomplish our goals or our success only because they don’t get our methods or path.

To all the ones who try to set me up with empty meanings and words followed by false promises and leaders who only see themselves as prophets of the cause but out of touch with themselves and looking to fill their own voids off the efforts of others.

that is all I can give you and that’s always gonna be enough because what I give is real.

The flame that burns inside me every day that gives me drive and focus can never be extinguished because it represents who I love, what I love. All who give it in return to me as long as I know others like me who struggle with the worlds infatuation with what they call normal and proper and trying to create a no individualism environment because all are equal, so none are unique is bull$hit and a lie.

Be real my brothers like me no matter the nation. I only need one wingman with me that is real. I know we are rare but those who represent as I do will always be welcomed to ride with me in this life and the next. Real is my power and my truth.

Shame on you for jumping so quickly to tear me down to make yourself feel as if you have a purpose because you’re lost, and you fear me and my confidence because you have none of your own.

Shame on you when you tempt me with the easy road and cause me and others to fail by skipping important steps that end up with a relationship based on mistrust and lack of confidence or hesitation, when your loyalty and integrity should be in question because you have it only for yourself and your ways and are only concerned about your own self-preservation.

Changing Belts and Pulleys Steve Knoble, RTR Contributor

I look forward to winter repairs. While nothing replaces actually riding my bike, there is something zen about time in the garage with good music and spinning wrenches to insure my bike will keep motoring for thousands of miles more. This month we will continue the primary and drive line service by replacing the belt and pulley on a 05 FXD. Last month we opened up the primary to replace the stator, and then I pulled the inner primary off too.

The first step is going to be to remove the lock plate that holds the nut in place on the transmission pulley. Hang onto this plate and hardware because sometimes replacement pulleys do not come with new ones. Now to remove the nut you will need a specialty 1 7/8” socket. I try to find a way around specialty tools whenever I reasonably can, but due to the length of the input shaft on the trans, you will need to buy one. I ordered one from our friends at Lowbrow Customs and it was at my house two days later.

In order to get the nut off you will need to lock the belt drive in place. I have someone hold the rear brake or put a pipe in the rear wheel. From here take your impact or breaker bar, turn to the RIGHT, with luck and a little sweet talk, it should break free. Now we move to the rear axle, and remove the clip that holds the axle nut in place. Loosen and remove the axle nut, then back the axle adjusters off a few turns. That extra space should allow you to remove the belt from the pulley. From here you will want to lift the back of the bike in the best way you have. Once the rear wheel is up in the air and stable you will want to slide the rear axle out, but be mindful of the spacers and their orientation. Finally, remove the rear wheel. Now that the belt is slack and off to the side you can remove the pulley from the transmission spline. To get the belt off

the swing arm you are going to have to undo the lower shock bolt and swing the shock to the side.

For removal of the wheel pulley, you will need to either use the impact or a breaker bar. If you use a breaker bar, it may be a challenge to get the pulley bolts free with the wheel off the bike.

The key to this is to rotate the wheel until a bolt is at the 3 o'clock location. You will be able to put a breaker bar on it, then position the bar cross the axle hole. This way when you lean on the breaker bar your weight will push down on the wheel and hold the tire in place, then break the bolt free. Go through all the bolts this way and then remove the old pulley. Once you have the pulley off, you will need to clean the face of the wheel where the pulley bolts on. Use some scotch-brite or fine grit sandpaper to take the corrosion off. This is of the utmost importance because you need a clean flat surface for the new pulley to bolt to. Without it, the pulley will not sit flat, possibly rock, the bolts will not stay torqued and they will then back out and cause a catastrophic failure.

Before you install the pulley, it is good to run a tap through the threads to clean them out. This will remove the old thread locker and any corrosion inside the bolt hole. On my 05 FXD it is a 7/16 - 14 thread and this tap can be found at most hardware stores. Once you clean the threads, put the new pulley in place then add a drop of medium strength thread locker to your bolts, tighten them in a criss cross pattern followed by torqueing them to spec. You will want to torque all the bolts a few times and in a repetitive pattern. This is because as you tighten the bolts the pulley may seat flatter and tighter by compressing high spots on the aluminum of the pulley and wheel. Repeatedly torqueing will insure the pulley is truly seated, all the bolts are truly tight and they will not be likely to back out. Once they are torqued, you can use a marker to put a dot on the head of each bolt that points toward the axle. This way you will be able to do a walk around and see if the bolts are backing out. *I do this on my pulley and brake caliper bolts.

Next, put the belt around the swingarm, and bolt the shock back on, then reinstall the rear wheel. Next clean the spline that the transmission pulley rides on, and slide the new pulley on there.

Thread the retaining nut on to hold the pulley in place, but wait to torque it. Install the belt over the pulleys and snug up the axle tensioners to put some tension on the belt. From here you can torque the transmission pulley to spec, then reinstall the retaining plate.

RECIPES White Chicken Chili (KETO) For years I’ve made a “Biker Chili” that’s warmed many and taken home a few awards. This year, however, I took the KETO plunge and dropped a lot from my diet. When asked to make chili for an event, I decided that I wanted to come up with an alternative that would not scare everyone away with the KETO tag on it and still have folks coming back for more. After 4-5 batches and more than a little tweaking, here is my “final” version that seems to be a hit with just about everyone – KETO or not!

It’s NOT overly spicy as presented here, but it has a good warming effect with the jalapenos. You can kick it up with more hot peppers instead of the sweet ones – or simply add hot sauce at the end, flavoring to each person’s particular preference.

Served up with slices of avocado and a few dashes of paprika on top.

Instructions: • Rinse off thawed or fresh chicken breasts and then season with cumin, oregano, cayenne, and salt n pepper. In a large skillet, melt butter or use small amount of oil to sear both sides of the chicken over medium heat until golden on the outside.

The basic recipe is a pretty hearty, creamy soup / chili. You can kick it up by adding more chicken, bacon, broccoli, mushroom, smoked ham, or even cooked pork sausage. I even add a scoop of it to my scrambled eggs in the morning!

• In a large pot, heat chicken broth and then add chicken. Bring to boil and then simmer for 15 minutes.

White Chicken Chili (KETO) Ingredients:

• While chicken is cooking, melt some butter in the same large skillet and add diced jalapenos, peppers, onions, and mushrooms / broccoli (if desired). Sauté until vegetables are soften and possibly have a slight toasted edge to them. Add the minced garlic and sauté for another minute – tossing the vegetable mix. Do not let it dry out or burn. Turn off the heat and set aside.

3 lb chicken breast 4 ½ cup chicken broth 6 garlic cloves, finely minced 3 diced jalapenos 3 whole sweet peppers (can use green) ¾ cup diced onion 12 tbsp butter ¾ cup heavy whipping cream 12oz cream cheese White Chicken Chili (KETO) 6 tsp cumin 3 tsp oregano Salt and Pepper to taste

• Once chicken is fully cooked, pull it from the broth and shred it with a fork on a cutting board. Shredding gives a totally different feeling to the chili – as opposed to dicing it up with a knife. It should be super tender and just pull apart. Once shredded – put the chicken back in the pot with the broth, now simmering.

• Add the sauteed vegetables to the pot with the chicken and broth. Simmer for another 10 minutes.

Optional Ingredients: • 3 slices of Bacon • ¾ tsp of cayenne • Finely diced broccoli • Pork Sausage • Fresh sliced mushrooms • Cauliflower Rice

• While this is happening, add the heavy whipping cream to a medium bowl with the cream cheese. Microwave these for approx. 1 minute, until you can break up and stir the cream cheese. You want to whip it up as much as possible. Once it is all fairly fluid, add it to the pot with everything else.

• Stir quickly to mix everything up and then simmer for an additional 15 minutes. Mix to make sure that the ingredients do not burn on the bottom.

Suggested toppings:

• Serve with your favorite toppings.

• Shredded Cheese – Sharp Cheddar or Pepper Jack • Bacon • Fresh avocado • Crumbled blue cheese • FAVORITE HOT SAUCE

TIPS: • Make sure that everything is cut up small enough that it would fit in a spoon. It’s soup – shouldn’t require a knife.

• If you like BACON – sauté 3 bacon slices in the pan, before adding the vegetables. ADDS a lot of flavor. You can dice up and leave in the soup – or pull the slices to crumble up and add later as a topping.

• If you want to KICK UP the chicken – you can sauté up the pulled chicken with a little bacon and hot sauce in a hot skillet, before adding to the pot. You can toast the edges a little and lock in the spiciness or flavor from the bacon.

• To really turn this into an entire meal, you can sauté up additional chicken, ham, or even scrambled eggs in a pan and then ladle a cup of the chili over the top.
