hellO Welcome to Derby Museums! I am delighted to be penning my first introduction since becoming Exceutive Director. This spring there will be a flurry of activity in our museum sites, principally the opening of the Joseph Wright Institute at the Museum and Art Gallery. The Study Centre will give easy access to all the works we hold by Derby’s most famous artistic son. To coincide with this we are hosting the exhibition Joseph Wright of Derby: Bath and Beyond, a selection of works painted during his sojourn in the West Country. The show features works from Tate, the National Gallery, the British Museum and Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge. At the Silk Mill the response to the Re:Make project has been brilliant. We have a phalanx of citizen curators. These are members of the public designing and making fixtures and fittings, selecting objects for display and creating new stories for the industrial history of the city. As well as continuing the making, there will be the opportunity to use the fully equipped workshop, learning skills such as laser cutting, 3D printing and metalwork on our Re:Make Skills Workshops. We’re also opening a small café in the Museum and Art Gallery in the delightful surroundings of the Derby Porcelain Gallery. The principle of making our sites with our visitors will be extended in plans to redevelop our Nature Gallery at the Museum and Art Gallery. We’re inviting you to drop in and contribute your ideas to how we should tell the story of Derby’s natural heritage. We want Derby Museums to be places of discovery and wonder, where visitors can learn new things and look at the world differently. I look forward to seeing you at Derby Museums in the future. You can also follow me on Twitter @tonybutler1

JOseph WrighT OF DerBY: BATh AnD BeYOnD 24 May - 31 August 2014 The Joseph Wright Institute Museum & Art Gallery FREE Joseph Wright ‘of Derby’ (1734-1797) lived and worked in Bath between November 1775 and June 1777. This brief and little-known episode in Wright’s life marked a crossroads in his career, yet it has never been explored in detail. ‘Joseph Wright of Derby: Bath and Beyond’ will place Wright in the context of the many artists, musicians, writers, business people and scientists living and working in the Georgian spa town and present for the first time a comprehensive view of his life and work during those eighteen months. The exhibition and accompanying catalogue will also go ‘beyond’ to examine the effect of his time in Bath and his travels in Italy on Wright’s later work. The exhibition has been produced in partnership with The Holburne Museum, Bath. Lenders include the National Gallery, Tate, the British Museum, the Walker Art Gallery and the Fitzwilliam Museum. Praise for the exhibition at the Holburne Museum: ‘a cracking show about a fascinating painter’ (Richard Dorment, The Telegraph) ‘quirkily fascinating’ (Rachel Campbell-Johnston, The Times) ‘a superb show’ (Martin Oldham, Apollo Magazine) ‘revelatory’ (Mark Brown, The Guardian)

wright inspired from 24 May The Joseph Wright Institute Museum & Art Gallery FREE To mark the launch of Derby Museums’ new Joseph Wright Institute, this exhibition presents work by Wright along with a curious collection of paintings known affectionately as the ‘not quite Wrights’. Produced during Wright’s own lifetime, or the two centuries since his death, these rarely seen, and often overlooked, paintings have either been inspired by, or copied directly from, his work. Works by students from Burton College and Derby’s Borrow Wood School add a contemporary element to this exhibition, celebrating Wright’s enduring ability to inspire new generations of budding artists. Today, great importance is laid on the authenticity and originality of works of art, but this a relatively recent perspective. In the 18th century, making copies of the works of other artists, both past and contemporary, was considered an important part of artistic training, and Wright himself copied or adapted from the work of others throughout his career. Wright also completed multiple versions or copies of his own paintings, leaving the identity of some of our paintings open to question. Discover these mysterious works for yourself, and join the debate. Wright Inspired offers lots of other opportunities to get involved: come and try on our newly-created 18th Century Costumes inspired by Wright’s portraits, create your own work in response to the exhibits, tell us what you think about the Institute or take part in events from our activity programme. We hope to inspire you!

Talk: Dressed to Impress: 18th Century Fashion Saturday 28 June 1–2pm Museum & Art Gallery Join Amanda Askari, art historian and ‘Artful Costumier’, the creative talent behind our new costumes in the Joseph Wright Institute. Amanda’s talk explores dress in the portraiture of Joseph Wright: what were his sitters wearing? And just who were they trying to impress?

Talk: A Revolution of Ideas Sunday 29 June 11am-12noon Museum & Art Gallery The Enlightenment was a time of turmoil in terms of ideas about the world. This shift influenced many spheres of life from politics to art, but what was the science behind it? Scientist Katie Smith explores the ideas of Joseph Wright’s time, shaped by the likes of Newton, Whitehurst, Boyle and more, and how Wright’s paintings reflect this.

All talks suitable for adults Free, booking recommended. To book, visit the Museum and Art Gallery or telephone 01332 641901.
