Dear DEC Friends, We’re thrilled with the expansion of our DEC programs, uniting students, faculty, and staff from across the university. The invaluable support from alumni and friends, whether as guest speakers, mentors, or financial contributors, has propelled our progress. Our dedicated community- faculty, staff, alumni, and friends- has been instrumental in broadening DEC’s impact at Tufts. Their commitment serves as inspiration, influencing students at pivotal moments in their lives. In today’s world, we need compassionate leaders with entrepreneurial mindsets. The challenges we face demand new solutions, and the collaborative efforts of our community are key to preparing the next generation of leaders. The various initiatives, from internships to advisory roles, highlight the diverse ways our supports contribute to DEC’s success. We deeply appreciate all who have joined us in cultivating this ethos. The synergy of our collective efforts allows us to make a significant impact. Letter from Elaine Chen Cummings Family Professor of the Practice in Entrepreneurship; Director, Derby Entrepreneurship Center at Tufts
Dear Innovators and Entrepreneurs, As I look back on the 2022-2023 academic year, the word that comes to mind is “wonder.” Wonder at the passion and optimism of new venture builders, who are turning their idea into action and realizing their impact. Wonder at the hunger and drive of emerging entrepreneurial leaders, who are building their entrepreneurial mindset and skillset to help them succeed in an existing enterprise. Wonder at the selfless dedication of our faculty and staff, who had to get creative to keep up with the demand in entrepreneurial learning experiences, inside and outside the classroom. It is wonderful to witness the rapid growth in the demand for entrepreneurship education at Tufts. Since 2020, we have almost doubled academic enrollments in our undergraduate courses, reaching over a thousand enrollments for the first time. We more than doubled participations in our cocurricular programs. In our Venture Builder pipeline, we see more teams enter our ecosystem, and more maturity and traction in graduating teams. In our Entrepreneurial Leadership pipeline, we see tremendous growth in our students who engage in the Entrepreneurial Internship program that pays students to take otherwise unpaid startup and nonprofit internships, and the Entrepreneurial Initiative Fund, a small grant program that gives students the fuel to take that first step. As a young Center, we are continuously learning about the needs and goals of our growing student base to help us build the courses, innovative programming, and student funding opportunities to meet the demands of our diverse student base. We can’t wait to build on the momentum of a wonderful year to continue to empower entrepreneurial leaders with profound purpose.

As a student with diverse interests and a broad range of academic pursuits, I found that the minor's integration with other fields of study allowed me to apply my entrepreneurial mindset in creative and innovative ways. From the strategic planning sessions with coaches, networking hours, discussions with mentors, speaker presentations and hands on workshops - I've been constantly challenged to find ways to enhance the business model and refine the expansion strategy of my healthy food delivery venture. Both programs have been such an enriching and eye-opening experience for me and have boosted my confidence in how I navigate and solve the roadblocks in my business.

Academics The Entrepreneurship Minor (ENT) continues to grow in popularity with a record-breaking 1000+ enrollments this academic year, reaching 11% of the undergraduate students. ENT is the most popular minor on campus, with courses that draw students from all schools and colleges at Tufts University. Students continue to find value in the “real world” education that they receive in the courses, which are taught by award-winning entrepreneurs and investors. Over 1000 unique students registered for ENT courses this year. We offer 25 ENT courses and continue to add courses to keep the curriculum interesting and relevant. The success of the ENT Minor led to the introduction of the Entrepreneurship for Social Impact Minor (ENTSI). Offered in partnership with Tisch College of Civic Life, ENTSI is designed for students who want to solve problems in today’s society and drive impact through innovation and new venture creation. We encourage students to jump in and start exploring entrepreneurship by offering a variety of introductory courses that help them explore topics spanning creativity, innovation, design thinking and more. Many of these courses are 2-credit, half-semester courses, allowing students to experiment with different topics without increasing their workload for a full semester.

INTRODUCTION TO MAKING This exploratory course gives students the practical, handson skills to make working prototypes. Students learn to make physical things, make them work, and integrate them with electronics/software.
PATHS TO ENTREPRENEURSHIP Students learn and unlearn what it means to be an entrepreneur and the various paths one can take towards entrepreneurship in this course. This course is taught by Phillip Ellison and Alex Ocampo, both Tufts graduates who credit the entrepreneurship program curriculum for teaching the fundamentals of taking an idea and building a business around it.

2022-2023 Highlights Co-curricular Programs, Activities, and Funding We are energized to see strong and sustained interest from students. We are focused on continuing to offer innovative programming that engages a growing number of students with diverse interests, bringing an entrepreneurial mindset and skillset to all through a combination of academic offerings and co-curricular programming. We believe it is important to offer many ways for students to learn entrepreneurial skills outside the classroom through co-curricular offerings. We provide networking events, coaching, workshops, internships, a venture accelerator, business plan competitions, cross-university mixers, speaker events, online learning content, and more. We are excited to report that for the 2022 - 2023 academic year, our cocurricular participation grew by over 50%!

The DEC self-paced entrepreneurship learning center provides the concepts, framework, and skillsets needed to build a new venture from scratch. Simply select from the module you are interested in learning more about, from entrepreneurial fundamentals, to market strategy, to finance and more; there is information on a wide variety of entrepreneurial skillsets. The learning center also provides helpful videos, pitching resources, and templates.
The new online learning center was a great asset in helping preparing our semi-finalist teams for the Tufts $100k New Ventures Competition. The easily accessible resources provided teams with real business frameworks and templates that made a fundamental difference in their pitches.

Fall: Innovation Fall is about welcoming new students into our innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem with open and inclusive events that are welcoming to all. Throughout the fall, we host a number of events to kick off the entrepreneurial spirit on campus. Through hosting Innovation Month to the Ideas Competition and Montle Prize, we nurture new students through workshops, speaker events, as well as competitions and prizes for early stage innovators.

In Spring, we support venture builders with 1x1 coaching, tailored educational materials, workshops, speaker events, and Cross-University Student Innovator (CUSI) mixers. The highlight of our spring programming is the Tufts $100k New Ventures Competition. Over 60 teams competed in this hybrid competition for the 2022-2023 academic year. We hosted virtual watch parties to add to the excitement of the competition.
Spring: Entrepreneurship NEW PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT Starting a new venture requires significant financial flexibility which may not be available to all students. Some students from underrepresented backgrounds, including first-generation low-income students, as well as international students from emerging markets, may face additional financial and visa status barriers. To address this challenge, we implemented the following during the 2022-2023 academic year: The Entrepreneurial Internship Program: We expanded our internship funding to allow more students to be paid a stipend of $4,500 for a 10-week internship at a startup or new non-profit, a majority of which were co-founded by Tufts alumni. This past year we have had 9 students go through this program, our most ever! The Entrepreneurial Initiative Fund (EIF): This application-based grant making program offers funding and entrepreneurial coaching to help eligible students and young alumni take the first step towards building a new venture. This program distributes small checks to support student clubs as well as innovators working on new projects. In addition to distributing equity-free grants, the program also matches awardees with dedicated mentors.
Summer: Acceleration

Summer is all about acceleration. Without the pressure of classes, students are free to concentrate on learning through immersion. We run two intensive programs every summer. The Pre-College Entrepreneurship and Innovation Bootcamp: A two-week-long immersive experience for high school entrepreneurs. Students learn how to build a new venture from the ground up.
Tufts Venture Accelerator: A 10-week-long summer program for student and alumni entrepreneurs who are working on their venture full-time.
Tufts $100k
The Tufts $100k New Ventures Competition is the flagship venture competition at Tufts. Early stage innovators and entrepreneurs pitch their ideas in three tracks: General Technology, Social Impact, and Healthcare & Life Science. The competition culminates in live pitch competitions at the semifinals and finals where students compete for a chance to win cash and in-kind services valued at over $250,000.

Regardless of the outcome of the semi-finals, preparing for the venture competition in itself was incredibly valuable. We were forced to condense our rambling pitch down to the absolute essentials and succeeded in record time. A 2023 Tufts $100k Semifinalist VIA EXIT SURVEY

The Tufts Venture Accelerator is a structured, 10-week-long summer venture accelerator program for students and alumni entrepreneurs who are working on their venture full-time. It provides structure, accountability, educational experiences, and more to help entrepreneurs who are building a venture make rapid progress throughout the summer.
This year, we had eight teams in the Tufts Venture Accelerator who worked hard all summer to get their ventures off the ground. These teams have come a very long way from when they first began; learn more about them here.

Boston Ecosystem Boston is the home of an incredible innovation ecosystem. No other city has as many universities, startups, investors, and innovative corporations within driving distance. In collaboration with MIT, Harvard and Boston University, Derby Entrepreneurship Center has taken a leadership role in fostering cross pollination for student innovators through cross-university student innovator mixer events, routinely drawing 150-350 students from 10-20 schools per event. We also work with local ecosystem builders to make sure our students are connected to the rich entrepreneurship and innovation resources that Boston has to offer.
