Magnifying Sports in MATATAG
IVictoryfrom Resilience editorial
As the MATATAG Curriculum is nearing its implementation, its pilot run is beaming with progress signifying its effectivity in the long run. With one of the major components promising steps to accelerate the delivery of basic education facilities and services, one thing is clear, the adaptation of education towards the vast problems that might occur – its resiliency. The question: How can the MATATAG Curriculum govern student athletes?
Sports has always been a huge part of our curriculum, as it doesn’t only foster students’ skills, but rather, it encourages discipline and sportsmanship that are also crucial in students’ development. Most importantly, it recognizes learners outstanding ability and passion for sports, giving them avenue and opportunities to hone their skills and further develop their full potential.
Philippines has a long history upon establishing itself in the field of sports, despite falling short from achieving awards and recognition for the country, failure was never an option. We tried and thrived until we achieved a triumphant victory, such as when we garnered our first Olympic gold medal earned by Hidilyn Diaz. From there, Filipino athletes worked harder and became better, bringing home multiple awards.
For us to foster athletes in the long run, we must first focus on our student athletes. Our curriculum openly supports students in the field of sports, as shown in the multiple sports competitions that it conducts, such as the City Meet, Region 1 Athletic Association (R1AA) Meet and Palarong Pambansa. These prestigious sports competitions showcase learners’ athletic skills in their respective fields.
Studying as a student athlete requires a level of competence, discipline and management. As they aren’t just students, they are also athletes, having responsibilities in both aspects. Aside from that, they also have a burden of representing their school, city and even region as a whole. This is when the MATATAG Curriculum enters as this offers adaptive and flexible learning that caters to their special needs that require intensive support and understanding.
“We know that the road will be bumpy, but our direction is clear, we know that the challenges are vast, but we Filipinos are resilient. We will overcome.” says Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte. Highlighting the implementation of the MATATAG Curriculum would start next school year 2024-2025.
MATATAG Curriculum is made to ensure that the education curriculum is effective and efficient to all learners. The way in which effectivity is garnered by diminishing learners’ subjects so that they can focus on their core subjects and lessons. Eradicating unnecessary workloads for students means that they can focus on other activities that are necessary, such as sports. This openly advocates for a better learning condition and environment that ensures balance in sports and academics. It may be a small step, but its already a huge progress in achieving a better and productive education.
n the midst of the Philippines' education challenges, Vice President and DepEd Secretary Sara Z. Duterte unveiled MATATAG Agenda. This has four critical components aimed at transforming basic education, one aspect often overlooked but with immense potential is the role of sports.
So, what are the crucial roles of sports in MATATAG?
The first component of MATATAG emphasizes making the curriculum relevant to produce competent and job-ready citizens. Sports, beyond its physical benefits, instills crucial life skills such as teamwork, discipline, resilience, and leadership.
By integrating sports into the curriculum, students not only engage in physical activity but also learn these essential skills that are highly sought after in the job market. Whether it's through physical education classes, intramural sports competitions, or extracurricular activities, sports provide a platform for holistic development that complements traditional academic learning.
The second component of MATATAG focuses on accelerating the delivery of basic education facilities and services. Sports infrastructure, including playgrounds, sports fields, and gymnasiums, are integral components of a conducive learning environment. Investing in the construction and maintenance of such facilities not only enhances students' physical health but also promotes social interaction and community cohesion. By prioritizing the development of sports infrastructure, MATATAG can ensure that learners have access to safe and conducive spaces for both learning and play.
The third component of MATATAG underscores the importance of learner well-being, inclusive education, and a positive learning environment. Sports, with its universal appeal, has the power to unite students from diverse
backgrounds and abilities. Through sports, learners can develop empathy, respect, and understanding for their peers. Thus, fosters a culture of inclusivity and acceptance.
Furthermore, participation in sports has been linked to improved mental health and overall well-being. This provides students with an outlet to relieve stress and anxiety associated with academic pressures.
Lastly, the fourth component of MATATAG emphasizes supporting teachers to teach better. Sports-based teaching methodologies, such as incorporating physical activity into lesson plans or using sports analogies to explain academic concepts, can enhance student engagement and comprehension.
Moreover, providing teachers with training and resources to integrate sports into their teaching practices can help create dynamic and interactive learning experiences for students. By recognizing the value of sports in education and equipping teachers with the necessary tools and support, MATATAG can empower educators to inspire and motivate their students to excel both inside and outside the classroom.
Hence, as the Philippines navigates through its education woes, harnessing the power of sports is paramount in realizing the goals set forth by the MATATAG Agenda.
Come, magnify sports and take your part!
