SPORTS WARRIORS, ECO WARRIORS

This year’s Region 1 Athletic Association (R1AA) Meet is not just a convergence of sports warrior but also eco warriors.

The Schools Division of Ilocos Norte, host of the 2024 R1AA through the leadership of the Regional Office 1, highlights the environment through an activity, “Towards a Sustainable Future: Coastal Clean-Up Activity & Public Awareness Campaign” with LINIS (Luntiang Ilocos Norte Ipamana sa Sanlibutan) Project in cooperation with Energy Development Corporation which was held in Burgos and Bangui, Ilocos Norte.

editorial

The said activity was so timely as a response to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: 17 Goals to Transform our World

Three out from the 17 have at least being addressed in this activity: 6, Clean Water and Sanitation; and 13, Climate action; 14, Life Below Water.

The ocean, with its vastness and beauty like the province of Ilocos Norte, holds a significant place in everyone’s lives. This is not just a source of livelihood but a way of living.

The Coastal Cleanup Drive emerges as a beacon of hope in the fight against marine pollution. This initiative brings people together fostering a shared responsibility to nature. It is just so delightful to see the pillars of the Department of Education, regional and division officials, stakeholders and environmental organizations, as vanguards of commitment and service taking the lead.

This is a manifestation that everyone, regardless of position and status have the same accountability. It's more than just picking up trash but promoting sustainable practices. It's a statement of commitment to the planet and future generations.

Moreover, it's an opportunity to infect people to take an action and raise awareness about the detrimental effects of harming the marine ecosystems. May this micro step of the Department of Education through this INvironmental R1AA creates a ripple macro effect, inspiring individuals to adopt eco-friendly habits in their daily lives and advocate for policies that prioritize environmental conservation.

The life of nature is interconnected to the life of its inhabitants. Thus, as the R1AA progresses to its summit, may this movement progress not just as one province, one region, one country but one world.

Region 1, it's time to turn the tide and reclaim the beauty of the world everyone deserves.

RVIRTUAL RESPONSIBILITIES

ecent Survey has declared that the Philippines is on top of the leaderboards for internet usage and e-games consumption. We are also on top of the ranks as ardent consumers of vlogging content and video games. This is evident in how teenagers are so updated in recent TikTok dance trends, lingos, and their constant posting of ranks in games like Call of Duty (DOT) and Mobile Legends (ML). Yet, in the world of e-sports, amidst the cheers of maintained win streaks, there’s a silent battle that keeps getting ignored and that is environmental advocacy.

While e-sports and social media distract our teens from awful vices and offer a platform for creativity and connectivity, the urgency of environmental advocacy can sometimes be overshadowed and forgotten

by the brightness and excitement of digital competition. Climate Change, pollution, and Global Warming are demanding collective action and initiatives. Yet, many teenagers are turning a blind eye on these issues.

It is awfully ironic how we can be champions and mythic in our own e-games yet are silent and tongue-tied in the advocacy for initiatives and movement for the environment.

We should start a movement where we harness the same passion and determination that drive our winning streaks and achievements in our own egames to the fight for proper treatment of our environment.

It’s about time that we, not only the teens, become rowdy and loud not only in the quest for championship in online games but also for the environment.

AIMING FOR GOLD

There has always been a misconception about the word “winning.” A lot believe that winning means receiving trophies, certificates and reaching achievements. But in real life, that’s not the case. For in this world, winning is never about the gold medal, but the golden lesson of life; experience.

A common mistake that humans make for the sake of “winning” is sacrificing too much. One must know when to stop, when to continue, and when to rest. Humans crave success, and sometimes, it becomes too much, it causes harm. A harm to themselves, a burn caused by their own flame.

One must know that success isn’t always about the golden medal or the trophy. Many people, especially during competitions, believe that not being able to equip the golden medal means they’re failures. One’s success isn’t defined by a gold medal, rather, it is truly defined by the change and improvement that

one has been able to reinforce along the journey.

For those who got the golden medal, it is a symbol of their legacy and their hard work. As for those who are still training, that golden medal serves as inspiration, and motivation to train even harder. One must not dwell on not having to achieve the peak, for having tried is already a great achievement.

Every single person wishes to win, everyone tries very hard to be the best. Gold is a reward for dedication. An award is given to those who are determined and passionate about their goal. However, the gold medals, golden trophies, or the golden crown are not the ones that define one’s hard work, it’s the lesson one learned along the way.

In every competition, winning is the goal. In this cruel life, one must aim to not just survive but also learn. To accept, to be grateful, and to concentrate. In order to reach success, focus on your goal, train hard to be the best. Always remember, you must deserve something to get it. So continue fighting, aim, and reach it.

OPINION

FIGHT FOR A DREAM

Strength and determination are qualities that motivate a person to continue, these are the driving forces that give every athlete the extra push to move forward and to try harder. Hindrances and obstacles are continuously being overcome as the barriers of expectations are being shattered to pieces. Persistence and perseverance shine within the souls of hard-working student-athletes as they train in hopes of bringing home the most aspired gold medal against the 14 competing provinces and cities within the Region 1.

The players' blood, sweat, and tears are being shed as the R1AA is approaching near. Every day, the chosen representatives of their division train rigolously, tirelessly, barely having time for themselves. At night, instead of resting and preparing their bodies to once again face the battlefield of training for tomorrow, their minds can't help but get stressed with the heavy pressure and high expectations that they are carrying on their back.

“Can we do it? Will we make it?” These questions linger in their minds. The R1AA indeed is like a looming storm, the excitement tingles their bodies but the stress of competing overpowers the tingle in them. The goals of these athletes seem so near, yet so far. Regionals Athletic Meet is a step to their dream, an opportunity to reach further. However, the world of sports is not merely a competition nor the search for the best, but a way to grow. While they stand in the lands of the hosting province, they are not ‘just’ representing their division, they are there to claim a golden opportunity, to gain experience, and knowledge, and to hone their skills.

Every single person wishes to win, everyone tries hard to be the best. Although they face their opponents with utmost pride and confidence, there is a glint of doubt inside their fearless stance.

It may not be obvious because you cannot see their legs shaking or their hands trembling, but it is felt with the fast paces of heartbeats and the atmosphere full of tension.

When the games are over and the champions are crowned on stage as the crowd roars with applause, the first things that come to the athlete’s minds are the struggles and the challenges that they faced. The tears they shed, the exhaustion they felt. Every one of them has reached far. It’s fun to venture and fight for your passion, into sports. It’s not always about going on stage. It's not the medals, trophies, or certificates that define winning — it's the resilience and determination they have and the efforts they’ve given to pursue their dreams.

EDGEOFTHEPOOL EDGEOFTHEPOOL EDGEOFTHEPOOL

The scorching heat of the sun warms the determination of two young Laoag tankers in reaching the edge of the pool triumphantly.

At the edge of the pool royalties, are the slashing victories of Dominic Josef A. Nacnac, 11, of the Mariano Marcos State University-Laboratory Elementary School and Aya Emme B. Piawan, 10, of the Padre Annibale integrated School. The victorious swimmers both belong to Urban Swim Club, a prestigious swim club in the heart of the city. Fins sharpen fins, Piawan considers her sister, Aliyah Piawan and her former teammate Jasmine Obra as inspiration in swimming, while Nacnac idolizes Michael Phelps, an olympian. The unwavering waves of support from Mr. Jairulla Jaitulla, a national trainor and their favorite Urban Swim Club trainor, coach Florian Obra are extraordinary.

Immersed in an excellent in-house-training for three productive months, these young and promising divers determination and dedication shower them with strength, speed and stamina to reach greater heights. The mantra of not giving up and swimming the extra mile provided them a tumble turn of triumph and victory.

Competitively, their rigorous training under the stewardship of the Urban Swim Club anchored on the support of the Schools Division of Laoag City and the Laoag City Government decorated both the swimmers, gold medals in backstroke and butterfly in their favorite chosen distance.

Indeed, as both tankers dive headfirst into the pool of competition, they embody the spirit of perseverance and resilience and prove that with passion, determination and dedication, anything is possible.

After all, with Nacnac and Piawan’s inspiration, a good number of Laoag City swimming team also gained silver and bronze medals in the most prestigious sports competition in the region.

True enough, Nacnac and Piawan’s royalties in swimming embrace the waves of winning.

Laoag City dismantles La Union's tight defense to secure spot in Quarterfinals

Jerrah Mae Mahor and Kchieffer Lainell T. Arcangel

Laoag City rode a hard-fought brawl and successfully outmaneuvered La Union's unyielding defense in a thrilling match to reap a resounding 6-2 victory in the Region 1 Athletic Association (R1AA) Meet Softball Elementary Game 5 held at the Bacarra National Comprehensive High School, April 24.

The Laoag City shrugged off their initial outs as they immediately redeemed themselves with a slam as Blessy Corpuz's single started their scoreboard marking.

Followed by Abigail Respicio and Tamina Fermin's free runs with the help of Janela Balico's excellent full swing hit, they gave their team 3 consecutive points in the first inning.

Never letting the La Union tally on their board, Laoag's first baser Balico and second base duty Czamille Lumabao showcased their glorious tandem to catch their enemies' hits and out their foes, 3-0.

However, the Laoag City failed to keep their momentum as they only scored a point in the second inning with Rhiza Alvarado's home base.

Trying to revamp themselves as the defensive team, Laoag City tried to guard their rival's moves but failed to attend to Jersey No. 30's sneak to run in the base.

Laoag's pitcher Fermin successfully saved her squad's plummet as she forged in swift pitches to strike the La Union batters out consecutively and hack out an all 1 score.

The Laoag City flopped in their score haul as they only chipped in one mark through Balico who hastened on her feet to squeak past the alert La Union.

Failing to bag points in their offense, leading Laoag City played for zero in their defensive round as first base Balico quickly nabbed the La Unions' ground ball hits to promptly tag out their foes, 1-0.

However, fate took an unexpected turn during their match against Ilocos Sur when Jacinto suffered an injury. Despite the setback, Jacinto displayed remarkable resilience, continuing to play with determination and grit. Despite their valiant efforts, the team narrowly missed out on a spot in the finals, settling for a welldeserved bronze medal.

Their coaches praised the team for their outstanding performance, highlighting their dedication and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

The entire SDO Laoag City is proud of the team's achievement and looks forward to their continued success in future competitions.

With Laoag City's lead despite struggling to escape La Union's well grounded defense, the latter stepped their game up and intensified the match after striking out first batter Blessy Corpuz.

Laoag's catcher Respicio managed to hit a single before faltering to La Union's hawk-like eyes and was followed by the PITCHER'S sturdy pitches to strike Balico out.

La Union's pride Jersey No. 30 gave her team another point after securing the home on their first bat before bowing down to Laoag City's upgrade of defense, 1-0.

As the final inning pierced, Laoag's Chelsea Ramos gave her team a home before Lumabao departed after an out and Khzl Lorenzo failing to secure a base after her.

Laoag City decided to end the game straightaway as Fermin pitched her strike outs consecutively to seize a final score of 6-2.

"What I feel right now is happiness because again, we won," said captain ball Fermin, "However, I feel nervous for tomorrow because I'm afraid that maybe our opponent will be strong but nevertheless, we know we can and we'll still fight."

Moreover, the Laoag City will lean into their experience to defeat their next enemy, Ilocos Norte, which will be held in the same venue on April 25.
