By graduation, a DePaul Prep graduate is equipped to fully live out our DePaul College Prep Core Values of Faith, Respect, Excellence, Service and Health, and knows how to apply these values to every aspect of their young adult lives, making themselves an active participant in Saint Vincent’s story. A DePaul College Prep student has become an independent learner who has developed mastery of those skills necessary for success at the college and university level and as a Vincentian graduate, has developed a habit of intellectual curiosity, and understands that the world of learning continues after high school and into adulthood. Moreover, a DePaul Prep graduate understands how to respond to Saint Vincent DePaul’s question of “What must be done?” to serve in the world that lies ahead of them.
During the four years that a DePaul Prep graduate has spent in our Mission-driven Vincentian community, they will be formed by the stories of Jesus in the gospels and by extension, Catholic Social Teachings and the Vincentian Charism of “humble and grateful service to the poor.”

DePaul College Prep students and faculty embody St. Vincent de Paul’s legacy of “humble and grateful service.” By asking ourselves “What must be done?”, the DePaul Prep community responds to critical needs for those who live on the margins of society.
In response to this question, DePaul Prep students volunteer at food pantries, homeless shelters, nursing homes, tutoring programs, clothing distribution centers, programs for people with special needs, the Chicago Park District, animal shelters, and many other social services organizations. Experiential service opportunities teach community engagement and develop our students to become servant leaders and caring adults.

In October of 2024, 13 students from DePaul Prep’s Sustainable Urban Food Systems & Culinary Arts Class had the opportunity to travel to New York to experience how the United Nations Sustainable Development goals are being achieved on a global scale.
They spent a day touring the United Nations and learned how the organization works globally to create a healthier, sustainable, and more just world. Students also visited Rethink Food, an organization that takes food from New York restaurants and repurposes it into meals for people in need. The students saw firsthand how excess food from restaurants can feed a community.
Throughout the trip, the students reflected on their experience, prompting incredible discussions and sparking curiosity. This invaluable opportunity allowed the students to use what they learned in class and see how it is applied in the real world.
Our regenerative garden donated over 250 pounds of produce to Nourishing Hope Food Pantry in 2025. Each year our students in the Sustainable Urban Food Systems and Culinary Arts class start the garden in our greenhouse in January. As the weather warms, seedlings from the greenhouse are transplanted to the Wendell and Marie Smith garden. Over the summer, student and parent volunteers cultivate our organic garden. The Fall brings an abundance of produce cared for and harvested by our students to be used in our class and dining halls. The excess is donated to food pantries in Chicago. 10
Exposure to and participation in the fine arts encourages critical thinking, increased global awareness, and a sense of self-discovery. Programs in the fine arts at DePaul Prep enhance the classroom experience and allow our students’ creativity to flourish.
The Visual Arts Program at DePaul College Prep helps students grow as artists by offering courses that include drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. The art department showcases students’ artwork in two major exhibitions.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Visual Arts program emphasizes community service and civic engagement, with students actively engaged through internships and partnerships with cultural institutions like the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.
Beyond the classroom, students have enriched their artistic experiences through co-curricular opportunities. The National Art Honor Society has continued its dedication to service, partnering with Humble Design to create artwork for individuals transitioning from homelessness.
Recent graduates are currently attending DePaul University, Rhode Island School of Design, Savannah College of Art and Design, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago focusing on Fine Art, Illustration, Animation, Architecture, and Fashion.

The DePaul College Prep music program offers a variety of high quality, engaging musical opportunities to all students. Whether a student has many years of experience or none at all, music students at DePaul Prep can find ways to build skills and deepen their love of music. The current curriculum includes two levels of Choir, two levels of Band, Chamber Orchestra, Jazz Combo, and Music Production. Student musicians embrace DePaul Prep’s core value of service by providing music at school liturgies, sporting events, and quarterly concerts. Alumni of the program currently pursue Music Performance, Business, and Music Education degrees at Belmont University, Berklee School of Music, and the University of Iowa.

Emulating the Chicago storefront theater model, the DePaul Prep Theater Society mentors nearly 70 student actors, directors, stage managers, and crew members annually. The program challenges student actors and audiences in ways that extend beyond typical high school fare. The DePaul Prep Theater Society performs in our Black Box theater, which emphasizes intimacy over spectacle and honesty over artifice. Recent graduates have been admitted to highly competitive college theater programs, including The Theatre School at DePaul University and the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Three DePaul College Prep siblings and alumni—Mati, Sephi, and James Favela—are now pursuing their degrees at DePaul University, carrying forward the Vincentian values and strong academic foundations they developed at DePaul Prep.
Mati, a Finance major, credits DePaul Prep’s passionate math teachers for sparking her love of problem-solving and her interest in a career in financial advising. Sephi, who studies Environmental Science, was inspired by her STEM teachers, whose encouragement and mentorship helped her pursue her interest in environmental sustainability and justice. James, majoring in Nursing, developed a fascination with biology, chemistry, and psychology at DePaul Prep and is eager to use those skills to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
Through rigorous academics and leadership opportunities at DePaul Prep, Mati, Sephi, and James also learned the value of time management, perseverance, and service—skills that now help them thrive at DePaul University.
For Sephi and Mati, the ComEd Scholarship they received at DePaul Prep played a pivotal role in shaping their educational paths and has followed them to DePaul University. The scholarship provides hands-on exposure to energy-related careers and connects them with professionals in STEM. All three also received the Catholic Heritage Scholarship at DePaul University, a recognition of their commitment to faith-based education. “DePaul Prep gave me a strong understanding of the Vincentian core values, and now, building on that at DePaul University, I’m able to deepen my knowledge through action,” said Sephi.
Looking ahead, each sibling has a clear vision for the future. Mati plans to start a career in financial advising, then become a Certified Financial Analyst. Sephi hopes to pursue a master’s degree in Environmental Engineering, with a focus on water reclamation and environmental justice. James intends to gain clinical experience before advancing his nursing education.
Together, their stories reflect the enduring impact of a DePaul Prep education—rooted in excellence, service, and faith—and the powerful impact of Vincentian Catholic education.
Behind the success of our students stands a team of professionals who are leaders in their respective fields. We are proud to highlight three members of our team who have achieved statewide and national acclaim this year.
DePaul College Prep Girls Golf Coach Taylor Lambertsen was named one of Golf Digest’s Best Young Teachers in America (2025-2026). Coach Lambertsen has also been named a Top 50 Junior Golf Coach and Master U.S. Kids Golf Coach by U.S. Kids Golf. Additionally, she was featured as a Top 100 Grow the Game Professional by Golf Range Association of America (GRAA). Coach Lambertson has led the Girls golf coaching staff since 2024.
DePaul College Prep Athletic Director Pat Mahoney was named the 3A/4A Athletic Director of the Year (Division 1) by the Illinois Athletic Directors Association (IADA) for the 2025-2026 school year.
Coach Mahoney was recognized for his outstanding leadership, professionalism, and dedication to student-athletes, coaches, and school communities across Illinois. Under his leadership since 2018, DePaul Prep Athletics has rapidly expanded to offer 32 sports for young women and men and has won 5 IHSA state championships. His impact on DePaul Prep as AD and a member of the school’s Executive Leadership Team has firmly established a culture of excellence, sportsmanship, and service among our student athletes.
STEAM Faculty member Will Schneider’s short film, Tame, has screened at 4 major U.S. film festivals, including: the 32nd Chicago Underground Film Festival (CUFF), the Nightmares Film Festival in Columbus, Ohio, the Charlotte Film Festival in Charlotte, North Carolina, and at HollyShorts in Los Angeles. CUFF is the longestrunning underground film festival in the world, and HollyShorts is one of the few Oscar-qualifying film festivals in the country
The project was partially funded by a grant from the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and was shot in Chicago at the historic Fullerton Restaurant. It was nominated for Best Short Screenplay at the Nightmares Film Festival, one of the premiere genre festivals in the U.S.
