Duur van die kursus?

Die EERSTE groep/kursus begin op 1 SEPTEMBER 2012 en strek tot 31 AUGUSTUS 2013. Die TWEEDE groep/kursus begin op 1 JULIE 2013 en strek tot 30 JUNIE 2014. Studente kan met spesiale verlof en 'n aansporingsfooi aansoek doen om hulle kursus met ses maande te verleng om hulle take af te handel en om sodoende hulle sertifikate te ontvang. Daarna moet studente van vooraf inskryf as hulle die kort kursus wil voltooi. _____________________________________

Before beginning to build a sustainable youth ministry, we must first grasp the practices and mindsets that keep youth ministries stuck. Youth Ministry Architects, through its work over the years with over 250 churches (as of this writing), has discovered patterns among stuck youth ministries, commonly expressed by these five assumptions: 1. All we need is a good idea. 2. Whatever you do, don't fail.

In youth ministry there is content thinking and systems thinking. Content thinking has to do with specific issues, topics, or ideas. Systems thinking has to do with the deeper issues that hide beneath content issues. An example of a content issue is declining youth attendance in youth group activities. An example of a systems issue undergirding this could be a lack of support structures in place that extend ownership of the ministry to youth, who don’t come because they don’t experience ownership of the program. A sustainable youth ministry pays attention to two key aspects of systems thinking: (1) Architecture—the structures that lead to sustainability and (2) Atmosphere—the culture and climate that lead to sustainability.

A faith in God as the real force for transformation in ministry Healthy youth workers manage conflict well, and know how to recover after failure. They practice saying “no” and so prevent burnout. Key quote: “Emotional health does not come automatically. What does come automatically is the pursuit of our own compulsions” (DeVries, p.115).

Sustainable youth ministry can only be built by those whose own emotional and spiritual health is sustainable. There is a great cost that comes with ignoring our own hearts and spiritual health in ministry. And while spiritual health is an end in itself, it is also one of the greatest assets the builder of a sustainable youth ministry has. As the health of the youth worker goes, so goes the health of the youth ministry. Healthy youth ministers recognize that God can work even through pain and in the midst of difficulty. They reject a victim mentality and take responsibility (with God’s help) for their own spiritual well being. They see problems not just as external threats, but as part of a larger system in which they often play a role, too. Several factors contribute to an emotionally healthy youth worker: 1. A life outside of the youth program 2. A healthy schedule with Sabbath and margins

Church politics is less about what we normally think of as "politics" and more about relationships and respect. Disgruntled workers who leave their jobs often cite “politics” as the reason, but when pressed, the majority of the time “politics” boils down essentially to “relationships.” As part of a larger church system, youth ministry is dependent on processes and people outside of the youth program. Youth ministers must learn to identify and work with “key stakeholders” in the church.

DeVries mentions several political bungles (pp.177-181) he has made, hoping to help youth workers avoid the same mistakes. These include: isolationism, following one’s own passion first, and the porcupine party (everything from knocking the previous youth leader to inflammatory emails to triangulation). Youth workers should become students of the way things work at their churches. How are decisions actually made? How do things get done? Without making sweeping judgments on church processes, youth workers should understand them and be able to work healthily within them. Not the least of these important processes is understanding who all the key stakeholders are (hint: not just the youth staff and volunteer team), and maximizing relationships with them in building a sustainable youth program.
