“The Bobby G Awards gives kids in the arts something to hang their hats on…”
— Randy Weeks
Our late DCPA President Randy Weeks founded Bobby G Awards in 2013 when he decided that high school theatre students deserved as much attention as high school athletes.
Randy began working in the DCPA box office, where he got his first taste of ticketing, marketing and public relations, while still a student at the University of Colorado. He became Robert Garner’s successor in 1989 and in 2007 became the President of the DCPA.
“I think this gives them something to strive for. And even if they don’t win, they have participated in a statewide competition. So it is going to be like going to the state championship in sports. We are providing our version of kids getting their letter sweaters.”
— Randy Weeks
Randy passed away in 2014 at age 59. What he started with the Bobby G Awards will ensure that neither he — nor the achievements of students in high school musical theatre — will ever be forgotten.
The Randy Weeks Memorial Fund for The Bobby G Awards was established at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts in 2015 to support the advancement of musical theatre for Colorado high school students. Beginning in 2017 the fund will provide financial support to selected schools through The Bobby G Awards. Due to the generosity of Robert and Judi Newman, the DCPA began accepting applications for the Production Support Fund during the 2015/16 Bobby G season.

“ My whole career was about passion,”
Bob Garner said to The Denver Post.
“It’s true of anybody who wants to be successful: if you don’t have passion for anything, you have nothing.”
The Bobby G Awards, a regional high school musical theatre awards program for THE JIMMY AWARDS National High School Musical Theatre Awards (NHSMTA), encourages and rewards outstanding achievements in the production of high school musical theatre.
Bob paved the way for Broadway theatre in Denver. Now, DCPA Broadway presents the finest touring productions at The Buell Theatre and The Ellie Caulkins Opera House. Robert Garner (1979–1989) and Randy Weeks (1989–2014) entertained Denver audiences with more than 475 Broadway hits including the pre-Broadway engagement of Disney’s The Little Mermaid as well as 11 national touring premieres such as The Book of Mormon, Peter and the Starcatcher and Pippin. In 1992, DCPA Broadway expanded programming to include cabaret productions at The Garner Galleria Theatre, named after Bob. The first production mounted was the successful run of Forever Plaid, followed by several cabaret hits including Denver’s longest-running musical, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.
