Yara Shahidi’s star began its ascent early in her career. Many came to know her through her role as Zoey Johnson in the hit sitcom Black-ish, where her wit and charm captivated audiences. The success of Black-ish catapulted her into the spin-off series Grown-ish, where she continued to shine as a lead character navigating the complexities of college life.

Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Yara (24) was destined for greatness from a young age. Raised in a family of artists, her mother Keri Shahidi, a model and actress, and her father Afshin Shahidi, a photographer and cinematographer, Yara was exposed to the world of entertainment and creativity from the start. Her Iranian-American and AfricanAmerican heritage further enriched her cultural background and influenced her outlook on life.

In an interview with Town & Country magazine, she said, “Because of my family’s background, I understand how interconnected cultures are.

Traditions may be different, but in terms of shared values, they’re transcontinental.”

Her foray into the entertainment industry began at the tender age of six when she appeared in television commercials and her natural talent soon caught the attention of casting directors. In 2009, she made her silver-screen debut in the comedy film Imagine That. Then, in 2014, her career took a significant leap forward when she landed the

role of Zoey in Black-ish, which revolved around an upper-middleclass African-American family navigating various social and cultural issues.

“I think we underestimate how much representation matters.

For so many people, Black-ish was the first time they saw their family represented on TV – and that’s not just in the Black community. That’s anyone in a non-nuclear family,’ she told The Hollywood Reporter.

EXPANDING HORIZONS

Building on the success of Blackish, Yara continued to make her mark in the television landscape with the 2018 series Grown-ish, which follows her character Zoey’s journey as she starts out in college. Yara not only reprised her role but was also a co-producer on the show, further showcasing her talents.

the world of film. In 2012, she starred alongside Tyler Perry and Matthew Fox in the crime thriller Alex Cross, marking her second big entry into the film industry. Her recent projects include lending her voice to the animated film PAW Patrol: The Movie, the lead role in The Sun is Also a Star and playing the role of Tinkerbell in Peter Pan & Wendy on Disney +. These have further solidified her status as a versatile and sought-after actress.

In an interview with Backstage, Yara spoke about her approach to how she selects roles, saying, “Never jeopardise who you are for a role. Now, I’m not saying you should never change for a role, because the fun of being different characters is adapting different nuances and different parts of the character, but never jeopardise your moral compass or anything like that to have a role.” As we peer into the future, Yara’s star shows no signs of dimming. The actress had several exciting projects released in 2023, including the much-anticipated Ballerina Overdrive. She also starred in Extrapolations and executive produced and starred in Sitting in Bars with Cake, a romantic comedy-drama

What sets Yara apart is not just her acting prowess but also her commitment to activism. In an era where celebrities are increasingly using their platforms for positive change, Yara is a trailblazer. Beyond the glitz and glamour, she is a voice for the voiceless.

Inspired by her parents’ activism and her own experiences as a young woman of mixed heritage, Yara is actively involved in various initiatives that address racial and gender equality.

This gave birth to Yara’s Club, the young women’s leadership network she founded, which stands as evidence to her dedication to creating spaces for young minds to flourish. “Giving back is not just something you do as an adult.

I wanted to create a space where young women could feel supported, encouraged, and equipped with the tools they need to navigate the challenges ahead,” she said in a recent interview with The New York Times about her motivation behind the project. “It’s about building a community that uplifts and inspires.”

In a world where celebrity status often overshadows the responsibility that comes with influence, Yara’s commitment to education, advocacy, and authenticity sets her apart as a role model worth emulating.

“I don’t take it lightly,” she shared with Elle about her perspective on being a role model towards young girls. “Every opportunity I have is a chance to make a positive impact.

I want to show young girls that they can be both strong and sensitive, ambitious and compassionate.”

Being part of one of the biggest reality-TV shows in the world, and continuing to host my ‘Audiogasm’, and ‘Ask A Man’ radio segments for almost 10 years now, I couldn’t be happier. I’m also so proud to be a father to my son, Phiwe. He’s my greatest blessing.

A: Radio is most definitely my

first love! I love creating magic...

I love the theatre of the mind.

Television is scary because the spotlight is literally on you, and the whole world is watching and listening at the same time. I’m actually a very shy person, so I get to hide behind radio; I just feel freer behind the mic.

Q: W HAT DRIVES YOU IN LIFE?

A: Love drives me. When my

siblings and I were growing up, my mom instilled in us that we must love and look out for each other first. When you’re brought up with unconditional love, you tackle the world head-on because you know that there’s a whole army cheering you on back home.

You go into the world with an invisible protective shield because nothing can break you. Family is very important to me; I have a great relationship with all my siblings and their children. We keep each other grounded.

DO YOU HOPE TO LEAVE BEHIND?

A: I wouldn’t want my kid to

achieve his goals faster than me because of the legacy I leave behind. I still believe that you

merican author Gary Chapman is most popularly known for his series of books The Five Love Languages, which zooms in on human connections and relationships. Gary emphasises that ‘love is a choice you make every day’ and that part of that choice is learning how to communicate and express your love for your significant other, no matter their age or creed.

It’s important to remember that, while you may love someone and attempt to show that in your own way, this does not automatically mean your partner feels loved.

This is why the way your partner chooses to ‘give’ love isn’t always the same as how you understand and ‘receive’ it.

The five love languages remind us that we all want to express love in different ways. You may have multiple love languages that intersect and can change over time. he idea of taking a brush and rubbing it over your dry skin may seem weird.

We get it. But don’t knock the idea down just yet! ‘Dry brushing’, also called ‘Garshana’ (gar-shun-uh), is an ancient Indian practice that involves running a dry brush over your skin in a specific pattern, promoting circulation, exfoliation and an overall improvement in your skin health. In India, dry brushing is classified as ‘Ayurvedic Medicine’, which is an alternative, holistic approach to physical and mental health that is now practiced globally.

LEARN THE TECHNIQUE STEP 1: The right brush Choose a brush with natural bristles that are firm but not too harsh. A brush with a long handle can make it easier to reach your back and other challenging areas.

Make sure your skin and the brush are completely dry before you begin.

STEP 2: Start at the feet Start dry brushing at your feet, using upward strokes to the direction of your heart. Gently brush over each area multiple times. Move up your legs, thighs, and buttocks.

STEP 3: Abdomen & back Brush over your abdomen in a circular clockwise motion following the natural flow of your lymphatic system. When brushing your back and shoulders, use long strokes across and down. You can also switch to brushing your back in an upward motion.

STEP 4: Sensitive areas Practice extra caution when dry brushing more sensitive areas like

your chest, breasts and neck.

Use a lighter touch and avoid brushing directly over any cuts, wounds or irritated skin.

STEP 5: End at your arms Brushing your arms should be the final step. Start from your hands, gently brushing in strokes towards your heart.

Pay attention to the elbow and underarm areas and be gentle on the delicate skin of your chest and shoulders.

STEP 6: Shower & moisturise After dry brushing, take a shower to wash away the dead skin cells.

Follow up with your favourite body lotion or body oil to hydrate and nourish your skin. Hydrate your body from the inside out by drinking lots of fresh water, too.

Dry brushing is an effective exfoliation method that promotes cell renewal through the removal of dead skin cells. Regular dry brushing helps to reveal fresh, healthy skin and can improve the absorption of skincare products.

“When there are dead, dry cells on the skin’s surface, they absorb any topical treatments.

Removing those dead skin cells with dry brushing allows for better delivery of [skincare] formulas,” says the founder of Skin Science Dermatology, Dr. Geeta Yadav.

Dry brushing also stimulates lymphatic drainage, which ensures that lymph fluid isn’t trapped under the skin, thus improving circulation. Winemaker Ntsiki Biyela shares her unique tale of courage

t’s been just over 20 years of winemaking for Ntsiki Biyela of Aslina Wines in Stellenbosch.

Not only have her wines won numerous awards, but she has been recognised for her instrumental role, as the first black female winemaker, in transforming SA’s wine industry, When she’s not creating stellar wines, she is mentoring young winemakers at the Pinotage Youth Development Academy. After all, she was once one of them.

Ntsiki, who grew up in the KZN village of Mahlabathini, a world away from the Cape winelands, earned a living as a domestic worker for a year before she was awarded a scholarship to study winemaking at Stellenbosch University in 1999.

Lessons were in Afrikaans, which was challenging (she

had to rely on language tutors to help her), and she had never tasted wine before setting foot on campus. But she knew that studying would change her life, and she forged ahead.

Q: W HY ARE YOU SO

PASSIONATE ABOUT WINEMAKING?

A: Making wine is an act of

faith. For years, I wanted to make a skin-fermented Chenin Blanc.

I started making that wine in 2004 in my mind... I knew exactly what I wanted it to taste like.

Only in 2021 did I have the chance to make it a reality. I bought five tons of grapes and started experimenting. When I thought of the risks, I reminded myself that I had been tasting and drinking this wine in my mind for years. Thankfully, it turned

She was a woman of faith – she had faith that things would work.

LIFE LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED THUS FAR?

A: My village taught me that

you’ve got to trust. When I started studying, my older sister cautioned that I will get the degree but it won’t necessarily mean I will end up as a winemaker. She told me to not be disappointed if that happens, because the degree is a tool. That was really hard for me to hear back then. I think it takes courage, trusting yourself and being easy on yourself to follow through, even though you don’t know what is going to happen.

ver since it caught on in the noughties, the expression ‘me time’ has always made me cringe a little. This sort of sentiment did not align with multi-tasking, never-say-no types such as myself. So it’s perhaps not surprising that I hit a wall circa 2020 – after simmering in a spicy stew of stress and a back-breaking workload for years, I experienced total burnout and was forced to face the mortifying realisation that I was subject to the same human frailties as everyone else.

If we don’t prioritise ‘self-care’ and little solo dates, chances are life will do it for us – via a rift in a relationship, illness, a career disaster or some other form of ‘nervy-B’ (as one of my delightfully sarcastic friends likes to call a nervous breakdown).

That’s if we’re lucky. If not, the best we can hope for is to stagger through life as a frazzled, sweaty, resentful hot mess, wondering where the time and our happiness went.

“Many people, especially women, battle to put themselves first because they have been taught not to,” says Joburg-based life and career coach Penny Holburn. “We have been taught to believe that we are not nice or good people if we think about ourselves. The problem is that if we don’t, we are not usually nice to be around anyway. It’s only when you learn to take care of yourself that you are able to give of your best to those around you.”

Penny, who teaches a timemanagement course, reassures that there are effective ways to take back control of your time.

SET BOUNDARIES

Those of us prone to feeling overwhelmed, and who would rather stick forks into our kneecaps than say ‘no’, may need to work on our boundaries.

Penny suggests three ways: •Observe someone you know who is better at saying ‘no’ and learn from them.

•Practise setting boundaries with people you know well first, especially your life partner. They are likely to be more receptive to your new resolve.

•Book a few sessions with a life coach or therapist who can offer guidance about how you can set and maintain boundaries.

BLOCKING OUT TIME IN YOUR DIARY FOR SELF-CARE IS THE SIMPLEST WAY TO MAKE SURE YOU ACTUALLY DO IT TIME MAGIC

You have to admit that ‘time magic’ sounds a lot more splendid than time management. And yet, good time management can magically add extra hours to your day. Hours you could spend bubble-bathing, reading, studying, hugging a tree, eating at your favourite café, working out, napping, socialising or whatever fits your definition of treating yourself.

“Most people who are successful in life have good time management skills,” says Penny. “You get ahead if you

are able to do more. However, there comes a point when doing more becomes self-sabotage and your performance starts to deteriorate. It’s a fine line but it’s one you can walk. When you learn to manage your time well, you can let go of what you just cannot fit in.”

R ANK YOUR GOALS

“In my course, I teach clients how to understand their goals for the year, the month, the week or even the day,” says Penny.

A good place to start is to write down what you want to achieve in a day, from top to least priority. Assign each goal a number, from one (your top priority). Next, list all the tasks that will help you reach those goals, and rank those in the same way. Ask yourself: Can I delegate? Can I dump any?

This will help you to focus on the more important tasks and prioritise your course of action. You can also gauge how much time you will need.

BOOK TIME

Blocking out time in your diary for self-care is the simplest way to make sure you actually do it.

“Put it in your diary as an appointment with yourself,” says Penny. “You must know why it is important, otherwise when the demands begin to pile up, self-care goes out the window.”

Start with small changes to your daily routine and build from there. “All of these skills take practise,” says Penny, “but you can and will get better at it.”

uberculosis (TB) has had a long-standing, devastating presence in our country. Every year, more than 304 000 South Africans contract the infectious disease, and about 56 000 lives are lost.

Of course, the gravity of the situation extends beyond mere statistics. Each number represents a story of someone who struggled to shake a preventable, treatable infection.

To commemorate World TB Day (24 March), we delve into the challenges posed by the disease – and what you can do to stay healthy.

WHAT IS TB?

TB is caused by bacteria called mycobacterium tuberculosis.

This germ most commonly affects the lungs, with symptoms that include: – Persistent coughing – Fatigue – Fever – Night sweats – Chills – Weight loss – Chest pain TB can also affect other parts of the body, such as the bones, lymph nodes, joints, skin and gastrointestinal tract.

WHY TB STILL WORRIES US

In the 19th century, TB (or ‘consumption’ as it was called) reached epidemic proportions in industrialised countries.

The disease was difficult to control due to ineffective treatments, and many feared contracting the life-threatening ‘white plague’ (so-called due to the pale, thin appearance of those affected).

disrupted our national TB services.

As a result, fewer people were diagnosed and treated in time.

• Multi-drug-resistant TB: Our health authorities are very worried about our high rate of MDR-TB. “People who are diagnosed with TB and started on treatment usually feel better within the first two weeks,” says Dr Heidi van Deventer, a research officer at the Desmond Tutu TB Centre in Cape Town. “As a result, many stop taking their medication [before they have gotten rid of the infection], which can lead to the TB mycobacterium becoming resistant to first-line TB drugs (the standard treatment). Drugsensitive TB can then become drug-resistant TB, which can be tough to treat.”

HOW TO PREVENT TB AND MDR-TB

TB is primarily spread from person to person through the airborne transmission of bacteria (such as when an infected person coughs). One of the best ways to prevent the spread of the disease is to ensure there is good ventilation wherever you are – in the car, bus, taxi, house or workplace. Open those windows.

“If you have TB, it’s critical to take your medication exactly as prescribed and to not skip doses,” Dr Van Deventer advises.

“If there are children under the age of five in the house, and someone who lives there has TB, it’s important to take the little ones to the local clinic or doctor for preventive treatment.”

Healthcare workers and anyone with a condition that compromises their immune system are also at higher risk. This includes cancer patients and those on immunesuppressive medication. Getting TB symptoms checked out sooner rather than later is important.

As with any health condition, early detection can help prevent serious disease.

“If you are experiencing the symptoms listed (on page 39), you should get tested. This is particularly important if you live with someone who has TB, but it’s still important if you don’t,” says Dr Van Deventer. “Tuberculosis is very common in South Africa, especially in our densely populated urban areas.”

Healthcare practitioners now primarily use PCR testing for TB. This simple, quick test detects the genetic material of the TB bacterium, and is available for free at all public health facilities and via private laboratories for a fee.

Today, TB is both preventable and treatable. The development of antibiotics in the mid-20th century led to a significant decline in TB death rates worldwide. In developed countries, tuberculosis went from being a major public health concern to a relatively rare disease.

Yet, in 2024, TB is still rife in South Africa. And, yes, many of us still fear getting sick.

Factors that contribute to our high TB numbers include: • A high prevalence of HIV: Those living with HIV have a higher risk of getting TB. Their odds of survival are also lower.

• Poverty: People who struggle to make ends meet don’t always seek medical care in time. Poor nutrition also often means TB treatment is less effective.

Tiro was a vibrant learner from PJ Simelane Secondary School in Soweto. He was close to his family, who were aware of and accepting of his sexual orientation; he loved cooking and making those around him happy.

“As learners and the community that grew up with him, we were aware that he was gay and we had no problem with it, because that is who he is,” says a former classmate who prefers to remain anonymous. “But you know some teachers, especially the older generation, think it’s wrong religiously and sometimes share their beliefs.”

I WISH ALL PRINCIPALS WOULD UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH VALUE THERE IS IN DIFFERENCE. WE ARE TEACHING CHILDREN FOR THE FUTURE, THEY ARE GOING TO BE FUTURE ADULTS She recalls the events that led to the young man ending his life after a teacher made fun of him in front of the class. “I remember him getting up to present, and while he was in front, the teacher was interrupting him, saying things like, ‘He must stop with his gay tendencies’, which made some of the learners laugh.”

Moalusi reportedly confronted the teacher, but things only got worse as he experienced further humiliation and disregard from other staff members, including the school principal.

“The next day, we were all shocked to hear that he had ended his life,” she recalls. “Learners were so angry and wanted to protest because the principal was protecting the teachers. We later learned that the teacher was suspended, but a year later nothing much has changed.”

GENDER DIVERSIT Y MAT TERS

Ruth Maseko of the Triangle Project says such incidents are a powerful testament to the daily suffering that many students endure because of their gender identification. Her organisation confronts the homophobia, transphobia and intersexphobia that gender-diverse people face in various communities.

“When we are having people this young take their own lives because of the prejudice,

judgement and discrimination of others, it should stop people in their tracks and make them examine their prejudice.”

South Africa banned sexual discrimination in 1996, and although our Constitution prohibits discrimination based on gender, identity or sexual orientation, it has done little to address gender and sexual diversity in education and support of queer individuals in schools.

THE RIGHT TO BE ACCEPTED

The SA Human Rights Commission and LGBQTI+ organisations have worked hard in recent years to ensure that gender-diverse people have the same rights as heterosexual people, including advocating for gender-neutral school uniforms and toilet facilities. The Department of Basic Education has confirmed

that it is urgently working on the final stages of these proposals, which will form part of the national guidelines for all schools to promote gender inclusivity.

Schools and universities are where young people learn and socialise for the majority of their lives. Apart from being significant places of learning, they can “provide a platform for unlearning former discriminatory beliefs through sensitisation training and creating genderinclusive environments”, says Sibonelo Ncanana, a human rights coordinator for OUT South Africa.

“To start to rectify this crisis, a comprehensive approach is necessary. At a minimum, this includes sensitising all educators about sexual orientation and gender identity and expression on an ongoing basis. Additionally, school curricula should affirm

representations of diverse families and loving relationships, and there should be an acknowledgement of gender diversity, such as providing at least one neutral bathroom per school.”

TOWARDS INCLUSIVIT Y

In April 2023, the University of Cape Town revealed a building chosen for gender-neutral bathrooms as part of the launch of Gender Dynamix’s policy framework for the inclusion of gender-diverse students in higher education.

The policy framework aims to address issues of gender identification and harassment, including hate speech and assault, as well as the disciplinary actions that institutions should take.

It also considers sensitisation training as well as access to inclusive housing and healthcare

for gender-diverse students.

Liberty Matthyse, the executive director of Gender Dynamix, said that she herself experienced prejudice and violence as a student. “There was no policy framework back then. This is a different time, where we now have the space and opportunity to launch a model to create a safe environment for trans and gender-diverse students.”

Ann Morton, the principal at Pinelands North Primary in Cape Town, says they embrace diversity in the school. There are two transgender students as well as students with learning differences such as ADHD. “I just wish all principals would understand how much value there is in difference, including gender differences. We are teaching children for the future, and they are going to be future adults.”

irls can’t code’ and similar tech myths and stereotypes are still inside jokes that women in the industry have to deal with. Adding to this stumbling block, low numbers of active role models (among other factors) also contribute to the under-representation of women in IT. Only 23% of tech jobs in South Africa are held by women. The good news is, there are efforts to support women in tech and increase their participation, such as the UN Women and African Union Commission’s African Girls Can Code Initiative (AGCCI). According to experts, there are additional ways to empower women in technology and help advance them in the field.

NORMALISE WOMEN IN TECH

Firstly, we need to look at ways to attract more women into the tech industry. Traditionally maledominated, the time for tech to actively encourage and nurture female participation is long overdue.

Keletso Mpisane, head of MiWay Blink, believes we need to stop talking about ‘women in tech’ as a separate category. “People who are interested in tech should all be welcome and treated exactly the same way. We need to normalise women in tech and that starts with how we talk about it.”

Keletso says there also needs to be a focus on encouraging girls from a young age to explore the possibilities of an IT career. “Tech isn’t just for nerdy boys; it requires creative thinkers, critical thinkers, innovators, problem solvers and empathetic people, all of which are skills that women excel at.”

“The greatest challenge to advancing gender equality in the tech workplace is addressing women’s underrepresentation in emerging roles, such as cloud computing, engineering, data and AI,” says Ursula Fear, senior talent programme manager at Salesforce.

She maintains that addressing this challenge starts long before a woman enters the workforce.

“We need to work together – as education institutes, as businesses, as caregivers – to help cultivate an interest in IT among young girls by exposing them to all the possibilities IT holds. We need to keep nurturing potential, interrogating how to make tech more appealing to women, and actively debunking any remaining stigmas, myths and stereotypes around tech being a male field.”

CREATE SUPPORTIVE SPACES

Leaders at technology firms would do well to evaluate how they can support women in their unique career challenges and experiences.

Mohini Ufeli, managing editor at fintech firm Paystack, says, “Guidance through structured mentorship and a culture of knowledge exchange and experience sharing will go a long way in supporting women growing their careers in the sector.”

Paystack’s Women’s Mentorship Programme, which has 18 mentors, has helped over 30 mentees navigate their personal and professional paths over the past six months, with themes ranging from career planning and leadership to family and parenting.

“By leveraging the power of shared wisdom and mentorship, firms create a safe space for women to voice their doubts, indulge their curiosity and grow.”

WOMEN NEED TO BE HEARD

Diversity, equity and inclusion policies in companies can and should be the starting point for women’s representation in the tech industry.

Kuppulakshmi Krishnamoorthy, global head of Zoho for Startups, asks: “Is it not a question of the cultural integrity of an organisation if women employees don’t feel included, don’t feel deserving of opportunities and growth, and don’t feel to be listened to?”

She says realising that women need to be heard “is a necessary first step”. There should also be opportunities created for peer-to-peer groups to be formed, which can lead to forging life-long connections or allies in the workplace.

Dr Amy Duncan, client service manager at Sea Monster Entertainment, recently attended the Games for Change Festival in New York, which hosted leading professionals and experts within the impact games and immersive tech space. “I was incredibly encouraged and inspired to see the number of kick-ass women in this industry doing incredible work and facilitating real change in the world.”

She says that while there is still a way to go in South Africa to improve gender representation within the tech industry at large, especially at senior levels, “There’s absolutely no doubt in my mind that women will continue to grow in prominence in the space.”

To support women, Amy says that we have to first support and celebrate the success stories that are out there – “and they are out there! It’s hugely important for women, in particular, to support other women, even if that just means giving up some time to share their stories or offer some advice.”

With time, she foresees that women will become the catalysts for huge advances in the tech space.

“I am excited to be a part of that progression and to see it happen.”

DECLUT TER Having too much stuff can be distracting and overwhelming.

Reduce toys by discarding broken, developmentally inappropriate (too old, too young), high-stimulation toys (video games, flashing lights, battery-operated) and duplicates (one instead of five teddies).

Keep their favourite toys nearby and visible – and store the rest out of sight. Circulate them like a toy library – do the same with books.

“As you decrease the quantity of your child’s toys and clutter, you increase their attention span and capacity for deep play,” says Kim John Payne, the education expert who came up with the term ‘Simplicity Parenting’.

He also advises decluttering the entire home, including the lighting and noise, to reduce sensory overload.

CREATE A RHY THM

DIAL BACK ACTIVITIES

The bane of modern parenting, you do need to take charge here, as too much screen time impacts on childhood development. In line with the American Academy of Pediatrics’ guidelines, Payne suggests moving electronic devices out of sight of younger children.

There should be no screens at all for children under two, and limited exposure for those aged two and older. This will allow kids to actively engage with the real world, play outdoors and free up family time. But this only works if parents get off their phones too…

Learn to say “no, thanks” to avoid a packed schedule. Be selective about playdates, birthday invites, after-school sports, music lessons and other activities. This way your child can enjoy each activity and still have plenty of free time.

“A child who doesn’t experience leisure – or better yet, boredom – will always be looking for external stimulation, entertainment or activities,” says Payne.

He regards boredom as a ‘gift’ because it sparks creativity and resourcefulness.

A rhythmical, predictable home life provides kids with a safe harbour. Creating a daily rhythm means they know what to expect – not in the sense of rigid routines, but how the daily family life is structured.

This includes setting time aside for rituals, such as ‘quiet time’ to decompress, laying the supper table together and having family meals where you chat about everyone’s day. Parents shouldn’t strive to make every day exceptional, but rather to teach children to appreciate normality.

“When every note is a high note, children lose the ability to fully engage in the present and to regulate their own time,” says Payne. “Ordinary days are really the sustaining notes of life.”

Be careful of what you say in front of youngsters. Filter out any adult information that may worry or scare them. “Too much information does not ‘prepare’ a child for a complicated world; it paralyses them,” says Payne.

That’s why adults should talk to children in an age-appropriate way, about topics they can fully understand. The idea is to limit our fast-paced ‘too much, too soon’ culture, and instead provide a simple and stress-free childhood for as long as possible.

Ingredients 1 bottle (750ml) Sauvignon Blanc wine ½ cup dry sherry 1 /3 cup simple syrup (see below) 1 /3 cup + 1 tbsp orange liqueur 1 grapefruit, sliced 1 orange, sliced 2 naartjies or mandarins, sliced Handful fresh mint leaves

Method

1. Make simple syrup by boiling one part water and one part white sugar in a small pot, stirring constantly until a syrup forms.

2. Combine wine and sherry.

3. Add simple syrup to taste (more for a sweeter drink and less for a more tart drink).

4. Stir in orange liqueur and decant into a jug. Add citrus fruit slices and mint leaves.

4. Leave to infuse for 2 hours (or overnight for best results).

5. Serve over ice.

Mulled apple punch Total time 15 mins Servings 4

Ingredients

1L clear apple juice 3 Tbsp brown sugar 3 sticks cinnamon 5 cardamom pods, bruised 4 slices fresh ginger ½ cup white rum (optional)

Method

1. Combine ingredients (except the rum) in a pot.

2. Simmer for 8-10 minutes.

3. Remove and stir through rum, if using.

4. Serve warm or refrigerate to serve cold.

Whipped fish spread Total time 25–30 mins Serves 2

Ingredients

500g haddock 3 cloves garlic, chopped 1 cup vegetable oil 2 potatoes, cooked and grated ½ cup plain yoghurt or sour cream Grated peel and juice of 1 lemon 2 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley Salt and black pepper Chopped spring onion and chilli flakes, for serving (optional) Crusty bread or crackers, for serving

Method

1. Steam fish in a colander over a pot of simmering water for 6–8 minutes. Set aside to cool.

2. Add fish to the bowl of a mixer fitted with a paddle attachment.

Whip at low speed for a few minutes until the fish has flaked.

3. With the mixer still running, add the garlic and half the oil in a thin, steady stream.

4. Add the potatoes and mix while adding the remaining oil.

5. Now whip the mixture on high speed until light and fluffy.

6. Fold through the yoghurt or sour cream, lemon peel and juice and parsley. Season to taste.

7. Garnish with spring onion and chilli flakes, if you like, and serve with crusty bread or crackers.

Burnt butter pasta with blistered tomatoes Total time 15–30 mins Serves 2

Ingredients

6-8 sheets lasagne 3 Tbsp butter 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2 Tbsp flour 2 cups milk Salt and black pepper Olive oil, for drizzling and frying 1 punnet cherry tomatoes

Handful fresh sage or thyme, plus extra for garnish ¼ cup breadcrumbs

Method

1. Cook lasagne in boiling salted water for 5-6 minutes until tender.

2. Transfer lasagne sheets to a plate and drizzle with oil.

3. Heat butter and garlic in a medium-size pot until the butter starts to turn a light brown colour and smells slightly nutty.

4. Remove from the heat and vigorously whisk in flour until smooth and lump-free.

5. Place the pot back on the heat and add ½ cup milk, whisking

until the sauce starts to thicken.

6. Repeat the process with the remaining milk and cook for 6-8 minutes or until you have a silky-smooth sauce. Season well.

7. Heat 2 Tbsp oil in a large pan and fry tomatoes for 4-5 minutes until blistered. Toss through the herbs and season.

8. Toast breadcrumbs in a little oil or butter in a pan over medium heat, stirring, for about 5 minutes.

9. Arrange lasagne on serving plates, drizzle with burnt butter sauce and top with blistered tomatoes. Garnish with sage or thyme and sprinkle with toasted breadcrumbs.

Arancini with cheese & bacon Total time 45 mins Makes 10-12

Ingredients

2 cups cooked rice, cooled 1 cup grated mozzarella or cheddar cheese ½ packet (100g) bacon bits, fried until crispy 2 Tbsp chopped fresh basil 2 cups breadcrumbs 1 cup flour 2 eggs, whisked Cooking oil, for deep-frying

Method

1. In a large bowl, combine the rice, cheese, bacon and basil.

2. Roll tablespoons of the mixture into balls and place onto a lined baking tray.

3. Chill in fridge for 30 minutes.

4. Place breadcrumbs, flour and egg into three separate bowls.

5. Coat each rice ball in flour, then egg, then breadcrumbs.

6. Heat oil in a large pot.

Deep-fry rice balls in batches for 4–6 minutes, until golden.

7. Drain on paper towel and serve while still hot.

Fresh herb and mushroom risotto Total time 40 mins Serves 2

9. Add a cup of stock and cook over a low heat, for 8–10 minutes or until all stock has been absorbed.

10. Repeat with the remaining stock, a cup at a time, stirring constantly between cupfuls.

11. Once rice has cooked, stir through the cream, mushrooms and thyme.

12. Season well.

13. Remove from heat and stir through parmesan to serve.

Ingredients

¼ cup vegetable oil 1 punnet (250g) portobellini or button mushrooms, sliced 1 punnet (150g) exotic mushrooms (optional) 3 Tbsp butter 1 onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, chopped Handful fresh sage (or any other fresh herb such as thyme, parsley, rosemary or basil) 2 cups white or arborio rice ¼ cup white wine (optional) 1L vegetable stock ½ cup cream 2 Tbsp fresh thyme Salt and black pepper ¼ cup grated parmesan cheese

Feel free to replace the parmesan with any hard cheese, like mature cheddar.

Method

1. Heat half the oil in a large pan over high heat.

2. Fry the exotic mushrooms (if using) for 4–5 minutes until lightly golden. Remove and set aside.

3. Add the remaining mushrooms and cook for 6–8 minutes.

Remove and set aside.

4. Turn down the heat to medium and add the remaining oil and butter.

5. Add the onion and fry for 5 minutes, until translucent.

6. Add the garlic and herbs, and cook for 3–5 minutes more, until the onions are lightly golden.

Remove the herbs and discard.

7. Add the rice and toast for 2–3 minutes, stirring constantly.

8. Pour in the wine and cook for 5–6 minutes. Use a wooden spoon or spatula to scrape off any bits stuck to the bottom of the pan.

Method

1. Preheat oven to 170°C. Greased a loaf tin or small square baking tray.

2. Melt chocolate until smooth and free of lumps.

3. In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. Stir through the egg and vanilla essence.

4. Gently mix in the flour and cocoa powder.

5. Carefully fold in the white chocolate.

6. Pour batter into the loaf tin or baking tray.

7. Bake for 12–18 minutes.

They should still have a bit of a wiggle if you shake the tin slightly.

8. Allow to cool completely in the tin before slicing.

STEP 1: Place a foam sheet, in any colour of your choice, on a flat working surface. Use a pencil to draw a heart on your sheet. This heart can be as small or big as you like.

STEP 2: U sing a pair of scissors, slowly cut along the outline of your heart.

STEP 3: Use your markers to write a message or the name of your friend or family member on the cut-out heart.

STEP 4: Take the hole punch and punch one or two holes into the top centre of your foam heart, about 0.5cm from the top.

STEP 5: U se a ruler to measure about 65cm of yarn. Cut it using scissors.

STEP 6: Thread your yarn through the hole(s) in your cut-out heart.

STEP 7: Add round beads to the yarn in whichever pattern you’d like and finish off your necklace by knotting the ends.

Everyone thought that maybe it had gone down for a while and that it would work again later, but they were wrong.

The king and queen of the village made an announcement on the community radio and television stations. They said that the internet would be down for a very long time. Everyone in the village was shocked.

“Our lives are over!” shouted one of her friends, grabbing Lolo by her shoulders.

One of Lolo’s teachers ran out of the classroom, grabbed her arm and said, “Do something, Lolo! You are the clever one.” Then the teacher ran off crying.

Lolo could not understand what the fuss was about. “Everyone is behaving as if the world is coming to an end!” she thought.

She decided that she would visit the king and queen to find out more about the problem. When Lolo arrived at the Royal House, she was welcomed with a glass of milk and a plate of chocolate biscuits.

Lolo ate some of the biscuits while she waited for the king and queen.

They were the best biscuits she had ever tasted.

The king and queen arrived and greeted Lolo. They began to talk about the problem in the village.

The queen explained that the problem was with a satellite that was far, far away – all the way up in the sky, in space.

“So,” said the queen, “it is not just our village, but the whole world that does not have the internet!”

The queen then held Lolo’s hand and said, “My child, we are looking for someone really clever to get into the royal spacecraft, travel into space and fix the satellite.”

“Lolo,” said the king, “you are very clever, and the only person for the job! If you do this, you will be doing the whole world a favour.”

Lolo felt excited and nervous all at the same time. She had read that going into space was a dangerous thing to do, but she agreed to go.

For days, the little girl worked alongside the space crew to prepare for this special mission.

She learnt how to operate the spacecraft and she learnt how to float in space. Soon Lolo was ready to fly off into space.

On the day that Lolo left, everyone was there to watch.

People threw flowers at her for good luck. Others sang songs of encouragement. Lolo felt so loved.

Lolo climbed into the spacecraft and the technicians turned the engines on. Moments later, the spacecraft left Earth. After flying for what seemed like a long, long time, the spacecraft landed at the space station. Lolo could see the satellite from the window.

She contacted the king and queen using a special type of radio to let them know that she had arrived safely. Everyone at home celebrated, and her parents were especially happy to know that their daughter was alive and well.

But the mission did not go quite as planned. For days, Lolo struggled to work out what the problem was. She knew that the success of the mission was in her hands and she did not want to let everyone down.

Eventually the space team’s food and water began to run out. The mission had become very difficult, but still the clever little girl kept working and working, until one day … she had worked it out! One of the cables on the satellite had burnt out and needed to be replaced. Once Lolo had done that, the internet was back! Everyone in her village and all over the world celebrated.

After a difficult but successful mission, Lolo returned home. She was a hero! The king and queen were so proud of her that they gave her a medal of honour and named their next child after her.

We reserve the right to increase the subscription amount at any time, and will advise you of this.1.5. All Jet Club benefits, other than the funeral benefit, are made available to you immediately upon acceptance of your Jet Club subscription.1.6.

If you wish to cancel your Jet Club subscription, you need to call TFG’s Customer Service Department on +27 860 834 834 and select option 4. 1.12. Certain Jet Club benefits are provided directly by the relevant service providers and not by Jet Club/TFG. 1.13. We reserve the right to cancel Jet Club at any time and in such an event we will provide notice to you.

2. FUNERAL BENEFIT The optional Jet Club subscription includes a funeral benefit which is a life insurance benefit. If you die, R3 500 will be paid to your beneficiary. If you have nominated a partner to be covered by the funeral benefit, R1 500 will be paid to you if your partner dies. The cover under the funeral benefit starts when you subscribe to Jet Club, either telephonically or in one of our stores. If you nominate a partner to be covered by the funeral benefit, the cover for your partner will start on the date that you nominate your partner, or the date that we capture take-up of the partner cover (whichever is the earlier). Foschini Retail Group (Pty) Ltd (“we” or “us”) is an authorised nancial services provider with FSP number 32719. We are an intermediary. The funeral benefit is underwritten by Guardrisk Life Limited, an authorised financial services provider and an insurer licensed to conduct life insurance business in terms of the Insurance Act 18 of 2017, with registration number 1999/013922/06 and FSP number 76 (“Guardrisk”). Guardrisk can be contacted on 011 669 1000 or on email at info@guardrisk.co.za. The amount for the Jet Club subscription is R48.00 per month. The premium for the funeral benefit is R3.00 per month and it is included in the monthly Jet Club subscription amount. There is no additional premium if you choose to cover your partner. We pay the premium to Guardrisk on your behalf every month. The Jet Club subscription amount (which includes an amount equal to the premium paid on your behalf) will be debited to your TFG Money Account each month. The terms and conditions for a TFG Money Account will apply together with the terms and conditions for the Jet Club funeral benefit. The billing of the Jet Club subscription amount will attract interest if your TFG Money Account payment plan attracts interest, at the same rate as your chosen payment plan. We will keep this interest. Guardrisk will not change the premium during the rst year following the starting date of cover unless there are reasonable actuarial grounds to do so, or if the change will be to your benefit. After the first year, the premium may be changed once a year, but we will give you 31 (thirty-one) days’ notice of any increase, the reason for the increase and if the increase will also result in an increase to the funeral benefit. The notice will also tell you what steps you can take, including giving you an opportunity to cancel your Jet Club subscription, if you are not happy with the change/changes.A three month waiting period, calculated from the starting date of cover, applies to a natural death. There is no waiting period for accidental death. You will not be covered if you commit suicide in the first year after the starting date of cover. There are general exclusions that apply to the Jet Club funeral benefit, the details of which are in the Policy and Disclosure Notice. Cover under the Jet Club funeral benefit will end when your TFG Money Account is terminated or when your Jet Club subscription ends. The funeral benefit will only be paid out once for your partner (if you have nominated a partner to be covered by the funeral benefit). Once it has been paid out, the cover for your partner will end. This means that, if your partner dies and the benefit is paid, you will not be able to cover another partner under this policy. If you have not paid the monthly amount required by us on your TFG Money Account for two consecutive months, the Jet Club funeral benefit will suspend (you will not have cover). Cover will also suspend if you reach your credit limit, which is the maximum approved amount of credit granted to you in terms of your TFG Money Account. Please refer to your policy terms and conditions for more information on when the cover will suspend and reinstate. Please read your policy and disclosure notice (which is attached to your welcome letter) and keep it in a safe place. You can also access a copy of your policy and disclosure notice on our website at www.jetclub.co.za, or ask in store. Please make sure that you have read the policy de nitions, exclusion clauses, premium clause and the claims procedure clause. Please also familiarise yourself with the time limits for making a claim and what documents will be needed when a claim is made.

You must please advise your beneficiary of the existence of the funeral benefit policy which forms part of your Jet Club subscription to ensure that if you die, a claim can be instituted on time. If you would like to nominate a partner to be covered by the funeral benefit, please ask for a Partner Details Form at one of our Jet stores, complete it and email it to jetclubforms@tfg.co.za or ask one of our store staff members to email it for you.

You will need to complete a partner details form when you add a partner, and you will have to con rm that you have your partner’s permission to provide us with his/her personal information. Claims can be submitted by completing a claim form and handing it in at any Jet store or emailing it to our Insurance Claims Department at claimsadmin@tfg.co.za. Claims must be submitted to us within 3 months of your death or your partner’s death. You must claim the funeral bene t if your partner dies. Your partner must claim the funeral benefit if you die. If you don’t have a partner, a person who is financially dependent on you, your sibling (including a half sibling or step sibling) or parent (including a natural or legally adoptive parent) must claim. Claims will be paid out by electronic funds transfer (EFT). Complaints can be made to the Ombud for Long – term Insurance, by contacting them on 021 657-5000. Complaints about how this product was sold to you can be made to the FAIS Ombud by contacting them on 012 470 9080. It is your responsibility let us know if any of your personal particulars change or if you would like to change your beneficiary. Any information you have given us must be true and correct, failing which any claim that is made could be adversely affected. It is also your responsibility to review the insurance cover periodically to ensure that it remains adequate. Unlike the funeral benefit, the other Jet Club benefits are not regulated by the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act, so you don’t have the same protections under those benefits that you do under the funeral benefit.

3. JET CLUB COMPETITIONS 3.1. All promotional competitions are organised by Foschini Retail Group (Pty) Ltd (“TFG”). 3.2. In these rules, “Promoter” means a person who directly or indirectly promotes, sponsors, organises or conducts promotional competition , or for whose benefit the promotional competition is promoted, sponsored, organised or conducted. 3.3. No director, member, partner, employee, agent of, or consultant to the Promoter or any other person who directly or indirectly controls or is controlled by the Promoter, their advertising agencies, or their spouses, life partners, parents, children, brothers, sisters, business partners or associates, may enter this promotional competition. Any item or value unused will be deemed waived by the winners. 3.14. Prizes are not transferable and may not be deferred or exchanged for cash, credit or otherwise. 3.15. If any taxes, levies, duties or any charges whatsoever are levied on a prize by any competent authority, the winner will be liable for these and the prize value will not be increased to compensate for such charges. 3.16. The winners will be selected after the closing date in the presence of an independent accountant/auditor/attorney. 3.17. The winners will be notified after the closing date. If the Promoter is not able to contact a winner or the winner does not provide the Promoter with relevant and correct information timeously, the prize will be forfeited and a new winner will be re-drawn. Any participant in this competition shall be deemed to have accepted these Competition Rules upon entry into the competition and agrees to be bound by them. 4. PERSONAL HEALTH ADVISOR (PHA) (MEDICAL ADVICE CARELINES) 4.1. Access to the service is available to valid Jet Club subscribers only (subscribers whose premiums are up to date at time of claim). 4.2. Based on symptom assessment, a Jet Club representative may refer a subscriber to a medical professional. Any costs incurred for services rendered by a medical professional are to be paid by the subscriber. 4.3. Symptom assessments are made based on the information provided by the subscriber at the time of the call and can only be as accurate as the information provided by the subscriber.

5. EA TOUCH - TRAUMA, ASSAULT AND HIV SUPPORT 5.1. Claims Procedure 5.1.1. The Jet Club subscriber should contact the Jet Club Call Centre to report the incident telephonically. Following the initial telephone counselling by the resource nurse and/or referral (if necessary), claim forms will be faxed or mailed to the client to complete. 5.2. The Club subscriber pays for treatment and claims back expenses from RSI (Risk Solutions International). 5.3. The subscriber submits the following documentation to Postal Address - RSI, PO Box 1181, Ruimsig, 1732. 5.3.1. Claim Form & Police Case number (for assault) 5.3.2. Medical reports in the event of injury. 5.3.3. Certified copy of client’s Identity document. 5.3.4. Banking details of the client 5.4. RSI will review the above documents to make a decision on the validity of the claim. If the claim is valid, RSI will reimburse the client. 5.5. Claims must be submitted within 30 days.

6. LEGAL ASSIST Legal Assist is a 24-hour telephonic advice line manned by qualified in-house attorneys who provide guidance on all legal matters. Subscribers have access to Europ Assistance’s national panel of attorneys where they will get 6.1. one free letter of demand 6.2. one free face –to-face 30-minute consultation with an Attorney on their panel. 6.3. One telephone call Access to the service is available to validated clients only.

7. JET CLUB VOUCHERS 7.1. Vouchers may be used for merchandise at any Jet store; 7.2. WHEELCHAIR TO WOW D i c k l i n ’s D a s h t o I n d e p e n d e n c e a t S t J o s e p h ’s Intermediate Paediatric Care

Learning that your child was involved in an accident is every parent’s worst nightmare. For the Goosens’ from Wellington, that fateful day was 1 December 2021, when their 7-year-old son Dicklin was hit by a car. The accident left Dicklin with a severe traumatic brain injury, a skull fracture and harm to his right eye, which meant multi-disciplinary therapy was needed to ensure he made some form of recovery. Dicklin was admitted to St Joseph’s Intermediate Paediatric Care. “Upon admission, he was wheelchair-bound and needed complete assistance for all activities of daily living, such as bathing, eating, dressing and even playing,” says occupational therapist, Kashiefa. Dicklin received intense rehabilitation and was seen for occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech therapy. As part of his rehabilitation process, he attended St Joseph’s School daily. His smile grew each day, and his fierce fighting spirit aided his progress, and after only 6 months of holistic care, Dicklin made remarkable progress in all aspects of his daily living. “He was able to walk short distances independently and use a walking frame for long distances. His improved mobility enabled him to enjoy a variety of activities and he particularly enjoyed playing in the park on his favourite ride, the merry-go-round,” adds Kashiefa. St Joseph’s Intermediate Paediatric Care launched a specialised play park for children with impairments in 2020–a great tool in therapy and inclusive play. Better yet, the little patients love it! “One of the greatest challenges we face in rehabilitation of survivors with acquired brain injuries is the ability of the brain and body to work together in a synchronised way, which we refer to as cognitive-motor ability, co-ordination and dexterity. Dicklin improved so much that he regained all basic learning skills and overcame most of his classroom challenges. He was able to write with improved pencil control and capably uses technology, such as the classroom tablet, for certain integrated learning activities,” says Kashiefa. Dicklin is back at home and in school and is enjoying being with his old classmates.
