In the integrity of radical honesty, this issue made me a little uncomfortable. I started Dental Entrepreneur Woman to rally women in dentistry and entrepreneurship. I was tired of seeing women in the industry go undervalued and underrecognized. So, giving them a platform was a non-negotiable for every outlet and facet of DeW.

It’s why stories like our fabulous cover authors, Dr. Haley and Dr. Goly Abivardi, deserve to take center stage. Because their pursuit of a shared vision as sisters is one that many of us can relate to. As renowned visionaries, entrepreneurs, and innovators, their tireless work has garnered attention and accolades from national and international awards, as well as press like gracing the cover of CNBC Europe. I love their drive, their sisterhood, and their moxie!

Then there are women like Sarah Cottingham, who went through immense trials and tribulations but emerged through the other end like a radiant light. It’s stories like these, centered around mindfulness and deep threshold work that give women everywhere hope for a brighter future. We’re honored that Sarah shared her story intimately with us, and so grateful that Samantha Jones walks us through a step-bystep process on how we can do the difficult yet rewarding work of self-discovery and acceptance.

Laura Nelson shares her incredible mission of making Dental conferences and events a more inclusive and accessible experience, particularly for women who are in recovery, or simply striving for a healthy, sober life. Sober Life Rocks, sparked by DeW, is a reality! Leah Grygleski takes us on an adventure through Pharping, Nepal, as she documents her impactful journey of dental volunteerism. She inspires me to do better.

Debbie Seidel Bittke shines a light on an underutilized service that could revolutionize the financial impact of many practices, as Callie Ward emphasizes the importance of forming authentic and meaningful relationships in the growth of your personal and professional career.

None of these important stories would have made it to the lives they’ll eventually impact had these women not have a platform. So, when Maggie Augustyn decided to write an article in celebration of me, I knew I had to stay true to my word and mission, no matter how uncomfortable I felt.

Because I am humbled, day in and day out, by the wonderful gift that God has given me. I am honored to be a channel in which his work unites incredible women. Maggie’s article, although kind, frames me in a light of greatness in which I don’t think I’m deserving of. But in the integrity of DeW’s mission, every DeW deserves a platform to share what’s in their heart.

As for little ole’ me? I’m happy just being in togetherness with one another. Bonus points if it’s over a delicious Moussaka.

TWO SISTERS PURSUING THEIR VISION

Dr. Haley and Dr. Goly Abivardi, you are internationally renowned as visionaries, innovators, and entrepreneurs; you have been honored several times with national and international awards. We are eager to get to know you both better. Tell us a little about each of you, what you love most, and a little bit about your family life and some insights into your upbringing.

Dr. Haley: Powerful role models deeply influenced our upbringing. Our mother, an entrepreneur, showed us the possibility of balancing a career with being a dedicated mother. She often said, “If you have a vision, go for it. ‘It doesn’t work’ doesn’t exist.”

Dr. Goly: Absolutely. She instilled in us the belief that the most beautiful achievement is bringing happiness to others. On the other hand, our father, a natural scientist, was a pioneer in sustainability, having written his thesis on the subject 60 years ago. He taught us the invaluable lesson that “Mother Nature always knows best.”

Working as co-CEOs for years, how do you navigate your collaboration? Could you share insights into how you effectively work together?

Dr. Haley: That is a great question. My sister and I have been working together for over 25 years! People often ask us why and how it’s been possible. There are times when

we challenge each other, but we share the same vision and mission, which is the main driver of our partnership: making people happy.

Dr. Goly: We have such a strong bond that we’ve cultivated over the years. This deep connection has enabled us to discover the most effective ways to complement each other.

Let us take a step back. Did both of you study dentistry in Zurich? Can you share a little bit more about that part of your journey and your early days as dentists?

Dr. Goly: Yes, indeed. We are both Swiss dentists, having studied two years of medicine and then dentistry at the University of Zurich in Switzerland.

Dr. Haley: After graduating and recognizing the importance of oral health for overall health, we wanted to treat children and contribute to their general health. This inspired us to lead a public pediatric dental clinic associated with primary schools in Switzerland, primarily for preventive care.

20 years ago, you built the first DSO in Switzerland and are known internationally as pioneers for changing dentistry. Tell us how this happened.

Dr. Goly: While treating numerous children, many from low-income backgrounds, we found ourselves facing several challenges and limitations in improving the oral health of our little patients. They mostly came too late.

Dr. Haley: As dentists and mothers, it was heartbreaking to witness our young patients suffering due to lack of awareness of their parents or, often, anxiety associated with dental visits.

Dr. Goly: Those early experiences inspired us to develop a new concept of a fear-free dental clinic, specifically to ease the anxiety associated with delaying dental visits.

Because of your new concept, you have been honored several times with national and international awards and featured in internationally renowned magazines, like on the cover of CNBC Europe: Two Dentists from Zurich Put the Whole Profession on its Head and are Exporting the Results.

Tell us about this new concept.

Dr. Haley: Unlike traditional clinics, we reimagined the entire patient’s experience, putting the emphasis on overall health and wellness and delivering a spa-like atmosphere as opposed to one of a dental exam room.

Dr. Goly: For the first time, all specialists could be found under one roof with extended opening hours, until 9 pm, 7 days a week, with a walk-in concept. We created a unique experience and design. We even had our own music and fragrance.

What challenges did you face?

Dr. Goly: At that time, we were quite young, driven by a vision, but faced the challenge of having zero patients in the city with the highest density of dentists at that time.

Dr. Haley: And only a modest amount of savings from our previous jobs.

You started from scratch and grew so quickly. How did this happen?

Dr. Haley: The concept was highly successful, and we opened other clinics, maintaining the same concept and consistent identity and design across all clinics. Without realizing it, we became the first Dental Service Organization (DSO, dental clinic chain) in Switzerland 20 years ago..

Dr. Goly: We also expanded to other countries in Europe and even to India. We became the first ”fear-free” DSO in Europe.

How did you discover this technology?

Dr. Haley: Our DSO grew bigger and knowing the importance of preventative care, we needed more hygienists, so we decided to also run our own dental hygienist school. Additionally, we did research and clinical studies for bigger and smaller dental companies, always with a focus on improving preventative care and treatment

Dr. Goly: Over 10 years ago, we stumbled into a miraculous technology that can treat early caries by mimicking nature. We were thrilled with this innovation with our belief that Mother Nature knows best and imagined what impact this technology could bring.

What drove you to find vVARDIS, and what motivates you?

Dr. Haley: Striving to provide the best care for our patients, it was heartbreaking to witness the suffering and severe health issues resulting from missing teeth and untreated cavities.

One of the most impactful moments in our career occurred when we decided to provide free dental treatment to homeless individuals in our clinics. Witnessing the transformation in their lives after restoring their smiles with implants and crowns was truly profound. Many of them regained employment and reestablished connections with their loved ones. The emotional experience reinforced our belief in the power of a healthy smile to positively change lives.

Dr. Goly: These emotional moments as dentists profoundly impacted our lives as well, leading us to make one of the most crucial decisions we have ever faced. We chose to sell our DSO and redirected our focus towards supporting this transformative technology.

That’s why we founded vVARDIS.

Our mission is to make this groundbreaking technology accessible to everyone, particularly the underserved population.

How does the technology work?

Dr. Haley: The vVARDIS technology operates as a unique biomimetic system, enabling effective therapy of early, non-cavitated carious lesions through Guided Enamel Remineralization While other noninvasive products remineralize and arrest caries primarily acting on the surface, our technology (in Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus) enables salivary calcium, phosphate, and fluoride ions to penetrate the enamel surface and begin in-depth remineralization.

The technology is supported by 25 years of scientific research, accompanied by evidence and clinical validation. Could you elaborate on this?

Dr. Goly: Over the past decade, this technology has safely and successfully treated over 100,000 patients in Europe and the US. Supported by more than 230 peerreviewed publications, solid data indicates success rates exceeding 90%. We are very proud that vVARDIS technology is increasingly incorporated into the curriculum of prestigious dental schools and universities in the US and Europe.

You’ve introduced a new category that dental professionals are quickly embracing and integrating into their clinics. Why is this product a game-changer for dental professionals and patients?

Dr. Haley: More than 80% of patients have initial tooth decay and white spots. These initial caries are often classified as “watch areas,” and left untreated. A significant majority, exceeding 60% in the US, leave the dental office without any treatment, and many may not even return.

Why are patients with these “Watch Areas” left untreated? 80% of these lesions are on interproximal surfaces, making drilling a risk that could unnecessarily remove significant healthy tooth structure. Adding to this, the rest of the initial caries often present as white spots, occurring during orthodontic treatments.

As dentists, we often find ourselves in a dilemma, knowing that if we don’t treat, and only watch and wait, the patient very often does not return, leaving them exposed to the potential of severe secondary diseases resulting from untreated caries.

Dr. Goly: Certainly. Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus not only allows for increased hygiene production, with hygienists performing the application during the same appointment, but it also provides additional benefits. This includes creating more chair time for the dentist, patient experience, and patient retention.

You’ve expanded your portfolio in the US—can you tell us about Curodont Protect?

You are both successful serial entrepreneurs and have received many awards, including Businesswomen of the Year, and now are joining the WinDSO Advisory Board. You are role models for many women.

Dr. Goly: We are honored to receive these recognitions. Our goal is to encourage everyone to pursue their impactful visions. While challenges and hurdles may arise along the way, we believe that by persevering, one can discover the right path to achieve their goal. A Preventative Future

About the authors

WHAT IS YOUR “WHY?”

After the pandemic, I started a podcast called The Story Project. It has helped me clarify my purpose and “why” at this stage in my life. I love putting the spotlight on women leaders in dentistry through storytelling, connection, and vulnerability. I’ve been so honored to have such incredible women as my guests willing to share their stories.

HOW DID YOU BECOME A DENTAL ENTREPRENEUR WOMAN? SHARE YOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL STORY!

Ten years ago, we noticed a growing problem in the dental industry… dental marketing, on the whole, was lacking. Full of stock photography and templated websites. It wasn’t telling dentistry’s beautiful story. Dentistry is an inspiring profession full of humans serving humans, and dental marketing should represent that. My husband launched Studio EightyEight to change this. We work with dentists and dental entrepreneurs all over the nation and help each one develop a custom digital marketing presence with a focus on story. In 2018, I officially joined the team as Business Development Director, and am also on the front lines of recruiting and hiring our new team members. I’m so thankful to have the opportunity to work not only with my husband but also with an insanely amazing team.

HOW DO YOU FIND BALANCE?

Last year, my word was “margin.” I actually had some people give me an eye roll when I shared it! Being a strong, driven, achiever-type woman, I have found myself cycling in and out of burnout throughout my professional career. Personally, finding balance has really been a journey of figuring out how to “be present” when I’m with my family and also when I’m working with our clients and team. Last year, I worked with The Mint Door docs, who helped me refine my skills of creating margins in my life so I could breathe. It was a joy to work with these ladies, and I highly recommend connecting with them if you want to take steps towards thriving in all the roles we play as women.

HOW DID YOU MEET YOUR PARTNER IN WORK AND LIFE?

The backstory: I met my husband of twenty-seven years now, at a youth group event in high school. My friend pointed Josh out to me while he was on the go-kart race track. I thought he was the cutest, skinny, tall geek I had ever seen. We became best friends, and the rest is history! I think when you first get married, everyone has a somewhat fairytale version of what their relationship will look like when the reality is that EVERY relationship takes work. We can look at other couples and think they’ve got it all figured out, but I guarantee every partnership that is thriving or attempting to thrive takes a lot of intention, love, and kindness. I do believe your marriage story is worth it. Along the way, we’ll all experience some bumps, bruises, and ups/downs, but please know that this is okay and normal. We are now leading and growing dentistry’s story-driven marketing agency together called Studio EightyEight. It’s been a ride!

HOW DO YOU KNOW YOUR VALUE AND OVERCOME BARRIERS?

Knowing and understanding your strengths and weaknesses has been a game-changer for me. Working through the Clifton Strengths assessment over a decade ago really helped solidify where I can add value and the places I need to improve. Operating with a tenacious spirit combined with a soft heart has been a powerful combination for me.

The most rewarding aspect of my work lies in forming connections with incredible individuals in the dental industry and witnessing their personal and professional development. The bonds I’ve established with my clients and their teams have filled my professional journey with love and joy. Each dental practice I’ve collaborated with has imparted new insights, fueling my ongoing journey of growth and learning.

WHO HAS BEEN THE MOST INFLUENTIAL WOMAN IN YOUR LIFE?

My grandmother. Her hard work and determination will stay with me forever. Her resilience and strength have been instrumental in shaping my personal and professional journey, empowering me to reach the position I am in today.

HOW DO YOU MEASURE YOUR SUCCESS?

I gauge my success by the influence I have on the clients I work with. Witnessing my clients flourish and develop from the sidelines and realizing that I played a role in their growth fuels my success and fills me with immense joy

WHAT OBSTACLES HAVE YOU OVERCOME IN YOUR CAREER?

The most significant challenge I’ve overcome involves recognizing that it’s impossible to please everyone. In interactions with potential clients, I’ve learned to be truthful with myself, assessing whether I am a suitable match for them and vice versa. Understanding that I don’t have to accept every prospective client who reaches out to me has been a crucial lesson. Embracing the ability to say no is not a sign of incompetence; rather, it’s a realization of the importance of alignment in professional relationships.

WHAT DO YOU DO TO TURN AROUND A BAD DAY?

Be grateful for my blessings and giving myself grace.

WHAT IS YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE?

My guilty pleasure is watching English Premier League games with my husband and screaming at the TV when the referee makes bad calls.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR THE NEW PERSON IN YOUR OFFICE?

Be patient and don’t give up. With hard work and determination, you will be able to do anything you set your mind to.

WHAT FAMOUS PERSON LIVING OR DEAD WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE LUNCH WITH AND WHAT WOULD YOU ASK THEM?

I would love to have lunch with Pep Guardiola - coach of the Manchester City Soccer team, and ask him what leadership tactics he uses with his players that have helped them win the triple. I also just want to stand next to him while he does his huddle before a game to hear what he tells his players before a match. Don't worry, my husband is well aware of my slight crush on this incredible leader.

WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?

I have never felt that I have a “job.” It is true when they say, “If you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life.” The best part of my day is getting to interact with people. I just adore other humans and getting to hear their stories. I love to help people and offer advice to help them thrive in business. Many people ask how I juggle so much. Even though it is through many different avenues of life and business, it’s all the same- helping people help themselves win!

WHO HAS BEEN THE MOST INFLUENTIAL WOMAN IN YOUR LIFE?

Absolutely my mother. To be transparent and vulnerable, I will say it’s kind of an unhappy part of my story. Today and for many years now, we have been very distant. We try, but it is hard. I know others who experience this and I hope they know they aren’t alone. My mother has amazing strengths, ethics, responsibility, and dedication, and she molded me in so many of those core values. I am forever grateful for the gifts she was able to give to me when she could.

HOW DO YOU MEASURE YOUR SUCCESS?

In business, statistically. Increases must happen in an

area of any business for it to be successful and to survive. Our employees and those we serve count on us to keep businesses surviving so they can continue to flourish. Success isn’t a feeling, it is an accomplishment.

WHAT IS YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE?

I have 2! Neopolitan Ice Cream and truly terrible reality television shows. Enjoyed together, it’s double the guilt.

WHAT “DEW” LEADERS DO?

Leaders support people. They help people realize their talents and worth, and they help nurture them. It is a leader’s job to make sure things go right and they do this through not only their business acumen but also through the people they help coach.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE INDOOR/OUTDOOR ACTIVITY?

My absolute favorite thing to do is to watch a fireworks display. No matter the occasion, fireworks make everyone excited!

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM VACATION?

If you have not heard of it, google Four Seasons Timeless Encounters. I am absolutely doing this. It is like a 2-3 week around-the-world trip, seeing the best highlights, all in luxury style. I’ve actually been dreaming about it for a long time and started a savings fund for it. When you see the price, you’ll see I am definitely going to be saving for a while, but it is going to happen!

WHAT DOES BALANCE LOOK LIKE?

Balance is health. Overindulgence in anything is never good. When we are out of balance, something will suffer. It may be physical, mental, or emotional. Balance is spreading ourselves around into areas of our lives that keep every part healthy.

ADVENTURING THROUGH MONASTERIES IN PHARPING, NEPAL: A DENTAL VOLUNTOURISM OPPORTUNITY

In November of 2022, 10 women sat down for dinner at a guesthouse in the small mountain town of Pharping - one hour outside of Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu. The conversation was centered around their first day of volunteer work that morning, in a makeshift dental clinic set up inside the Adzom Monastery. The team had a big day - after setting up four dental operatories, each complete with a portable dental unit powered by a compressor and a full stock of instruments and supplies - the group got to work treating dozens of children who lined up in front of the monastery to receive care.

The group would spend their next five days in this routine, working long but fulfilling days in this field clinic providing dental care and oral health education to local children aged 6-18.

The clinic was hosted by Global Dental Relief (GDR), a Denver-based non-profit organization that brings dental care to children in need in Nepal, Kenya, Cambodia, India, Guatemala, Mexico, and Kentucky, USA. The organization achieves this by hosting dental and general volunteers to deliver care. Volunteers come from all over the world to work, united by a common mission to serve the underserved.

This area of Nepal is set in a lush valley, surrounded by high Himalayan peaks and peppered with a number of opulent monasteries. Although not frequented by tourists, Pharping is a place of profound significance for Buddhists and Hindus, hence the high number of elaborate religious temples.

Nepal faces a major public health problem that is not uncommon among developing countries – a devastatingly high rate of oral disease and tooth decay. Poverty, lack of education, and lack of access to health care all contribute to this problem.

Under GDR’s Model of Care, children are brought into the clinic classroom-by-classroom, chaperoned by a teacher or sometimes principal. During their visit, they are taught proper brushing techniques, good oral health habits, how a cavity is formed, and even which foods promote positive oral health. They are given a toothbrush to keep and then line up to wait for the dentist. They approach the dental chair curious but hesitant; for many of them, this is their first-ever visit with a dentist.

The organization’s volunteers work to complete all care needed for each child, calling them back later in the week for a second or third visit if necessary. Geraldine Webb, a general volunteer from the UK, recalls with admiration a 15-year-old boy whom she treated with her traveling partner Penny Harris, DDS. The boy required such extensive dental work on all sides of his mouth that he was called back three mornings in a row. Remarkably, he showed up each morning with a smile on his face, especially on the last day when he left the clinic with a heartfelt ‘thank you.’

The approach to treatment the non-profit uses is two-fold and places importance on both restorative and preventive care. In addition to any extractions and fillings the child needs, each child is given a fluoride treatment and

reinforced oral health education before leaving the clinic. Once dental health is restored, children return to the clinic every two years to ensure a childhood of healthy smiles. This has contributed to a notable improvement in children who regularly visit the clinic.

Clinics are run by two experienced leaders from the nonprofit organization, who ensure a smooth and fulfilling experience for each volunteer. In any given group, there are up to 5 dentists, 2 hygienists, and 10 additional support staff in the form of dental students, formally trained assistants, or non-medical volunteers. Just like a dental office in the US, it takes a lot of help in addition to dental professionals to manage roles like sterilizing instruments, patient intake, and maintaining thorough and organized records. Dr. Harris and Mrs. Webb, together with their fellow volunteers, treated 824 children during the five-day clinic, providing $181,180 in donated dental care (US equivalent).

that serve children in schools and remote villages. Participants pay their own travel expenses and volunteer their time and expertise.

The organization’s programs extend their reach of care by delivering toothbrushes and oral health education in schools between clinics and by providing critical nutrition to children in high-need situations.

WHY DENTAL CARE FOR KIDS?

Many children globally live without access to dental care since local dentists are few and the cost of care is financially beyond reach. A child with a healthy mouth is more likely to have a healthy life. Without dental care, a small area of tooth decay could remain untreated, growing each year until it becomes infected and inflamed.

This style of trip is called a Small Adventure Clinic, a unique opportunity for return volunteers to immerse themselves deeply in the host country - sleeping, dining, and working out of a monastery, and receiving support in the clinic from local monks and nuns. Dr. Penny and Geraldine noted how inspiring the scenery is in Pharping, in awe of the morning sun sparkling off the roofs of tall monastic structures. The group agreed that this is a superior way to travel over traditional touring – leaving with lifelong connections and a feeling of gratitude and fulfillment. Geraldine says these trips leave her with “the fantastic feeling that you have made a difference, which is, after all, why we volunteer.”

GDR’s mission is to bring free dental care to children around the globe, in Nepal, India, Guatemala, Mexico, Kenya, Cambodia, and Kentucky. Teams of volunteer dentists, hygienists, assistants, and general volunteers deliver treatment and preventive care in dental clinics

This infection and chronic pain affect a child’s ability to sleep at night, eat properly, or stay alert in class. Over time, they lose their smiles, self-esteem, and ability to thrive.

For many children, Global Dental Relief volunteers provide the first dental care and oral health education of their young lives. During a clinic visit, each child receives a comprehensive exam, all needed dental care, a fluoride treatment and a new toothbrush, and oral health instruction.

It is the organization’s mission to restore children to bright smiles. Most importantly, the children stay under the organization’s care and are called back to the clinic every 2 years until they are grown up.

WHY AUTHENTIC AND MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIPS ARE SO IMPORTANT

IN NETWORKING. ARE REAL RELATIONSHIPS STRONGER THAN A LINKEDIN OR FACEBOOK CONNECTION?

In the year 2024, networking has evolved. We live in a society that is fast-paced, with small, short bites of time and snippets of connections. How do we make meaningful connections with other people in such times? It is essential to understand how to connect quickly to others and make these connections authentic and real. As entrepreneurs, how can we quickly establish meaningful connections with individuals who can help us achieve our networking goals? The key lies in developing deeper connections.

Research has shown that authenticity in online communication leads to greater user engagement, trust, and credibility. Authentic posts that reflect genuine emotions, experiences, and opinions tend to resonate more with audiences and facilitate deeper connections.

One study published in the Journal of Consumer Research found that individuals who share authentic content on social media are perceived as more trustworthy and socially attractive by their peers. Another study conducted at the University of North Carolina demonstrated that authentic self-presentation on social media platforms leads to increased feelings of social support and belonging.

Furthermore, research has shown that authentic interactions, such as sincere comments, constructive feedback, and genuine conversations, foster stronger

relationships, enhance user satisfaction, and facilitate meaningful connections among social media users.

It is important to note that the effects of authentic posts and interactions may vary based on individual preferences, cultural factors, and the specific context of social media platforms.

So how do we connect via social media and make that next level of relationship? Take my grandmother, Pearl, for example. She had an incredible ability to strike up conversations with anyone, and even in her old age, she had a vast network of friends from various clubs and groups.

From Grandma Pearl, I learned the value of making connections and being true to myself.

When I entered consulting, I realized that success often stems from relationships. But what does that truly mean? In dentistry, we excel at asking questions and engaging in conversation with our patients. However, the missing link is allowing others to feel like they truly know us. By establishing authentic and meaningful connections, people will trust us, feel safe asking questions, and be more likely to become a strong link in our networking pool. Furthermore, these connections can lead to positive word-of-mouth referrals.

To establish these connections, I use the acronym PEARL:

P stands for being present. When we give our undivided attention to people without distractions, they feel valued and not just another number. This becomes challenging in a trade show forum but can be deepened by followup conversations either in person or via messages on LinkedIn or Facebook. Present for me is to find something in common. Where do they live, where did they go to school? What do they like to do? What makes them tick? Do we share any common interests? I keep asking questions until we have some common ground. Then, we dive deeper into what that common ground is. Perhaps we both like to hike, and now I am able to remember that person’s name and the hike that we talked about. The reverse is also true; they know this about me, and now we have a deeper connection.

E stands for energy. The positive and genuine energy we bring to the conversation is contagious. People sense our sincerity and desire to get to know them. People remember how we made them feel! It is important to make eye contact, smile, and lean into what they are saying. In my mind, my heart reaches out to theirs, and we are sharing what fuels us: our energy.

A stands for authentic. It’s crucial to be genuinely interested in people’s lives. When we are real and genuine, they feel it. We have to walk the talk and show up as we are. When they trust us, they feel safe asking questions and are more likely to feel like we are friends. Friends refer friends, and friends show up.

R stands for respect. To get respect, we must give respect. Respect for their opinion and perspective. Respect for their thoughts and ideas, even if they might be contrary to ours. Respect for others as they are requires us to be safe and secure where we are.

L stands for listen. True listening involves being silent and fully engaged, not just waiting to respond. By asking open-ended questions and reflecting back on what we’ve heard, people feel heard and understood.

While my grandmother excelled in the first four steps, she struggled with truly listening. I recognize this challenge in myself as well. To overcome it, I strive to slow down, catch myself, and genuinely listen to people. By being present and listening, I am able to rephrase and repeat what is important to them. This makes them feel heard and safe.

Using PEARL, I am able to slow myself down and be very intentional and focused. I strive to find the links, and I also help myself at events and jot down some notes. Now, I can connect the name and face from Facebook or LinkedIn and remember the links and stories. I then strive

to reach out to the person via instant messaging and connect again.

Authentic relationships tend to be more enduring and resilient. Unlike a connection on LinkedIn or Facebook that doesn’t have any of the relationship connections, these relationships allow us to interact on social media as friends. We have commonalities, we have knowledge of each other and now we get to know each other more through our posts and interactions. It isn’t some random person “liking” your post, it is a new friend who is continually getting to know you better. Real relationships are based on shared experiences, shared goals, and a deeper emotional bond. These connections are more likely to stand the test of time and challenges, allowing for continued support and collaboration.

Additionally, authentic relationships provide a richer context for networking. They allow for deeper conversations, sharing of ideas, and a more comprehensive understanding of each other’s skills, interests, and aspirations. This deeper understanding often leads to more meaningful and targeted assistance, recommendations, and opportunities.

While online connections can certainly be beneficial in expanding one’s network and accessing a larger pool of contacts, they often lack the personal touch and depth of genuine relationships. They may serve as a starting point for networking, but in order to truly leverage those connections, it is important to cultivate authentic relationships that go beyond the virtual realm.

My career in dentistry has taught me how to create relationships quickly. How to intentionally find common ground and goals. How to enhance and add to that connection by interactions on social media and in person at events. These friendships deepen as the interactions increase and the shared knowledge is discussed.

Attending the DeW retreat in October of 2023, I was able to finally meet some of my connections in person. I was able to hug and visit with the people who I have interacted with on social media for the last year. It felt like a homecoming to be able to see them in person. You can connect online and develop a relationship.

It takes intention and time to see the person behind the profile picture. It takes a conversation to delve into who they really are and how we fit together. If you haven’t attended a DeW event, I encourage you to do so! The impact of this network is incredible, the leadership and inclusivity of the group are impactful, and the fun to be had is enormous!

FINDING THE MISSING PIECE: MY JOURNEY TO WHOLENESS AND THE BIRTH OF SOBER LIFE ROCKS

In the heart of every seemingly perfect life often lies a hidden struggle, a missing piece that, once found, transforms everything. My story is a testament to that truth. With two decades of experience running dental offices and founding Front Office Rocks, a successful online dental training company, I thought I had it all: a 20-year marriage, two wonderful children, a loyal dog, and a thriving career. I was a regular on the dental speaker circuit, sharing my knowledge and passion. Yet, beneath this facade of success, a storm was brewing, one that would challenge everything I thought I knew about myself.

THE CRASH AND THE REALIZATION

Then, in what seemed to be a night, my life seemed to come crashing down personally, and suddenly, I found myself alone, scared, depressed, and in disbelief. Despite my professional success, I was grappling with inner turmoil, masking my pain with a smile for the world. Like many women, I was adept at presenting a facade of composure while falling apart inside. My companions in those dark days were often a mimosa in the morning, beers at lunch, and wine in the evening. Not every day, but most.

THE GREY AREA DRINKER

No one knew how much of a crutch alcohol had become because my life was a whirlwind of events, flights, and hotels. But during this dark time, there I was at dental

conferences, surrounded by hundreds, and I never felt so alone. One day, I stumbled upon a TED Talk about “grey area” drinkers. I learned about the spectrum of Alcohol Use Disorder, a revelation that shattered my binary view of alcoholism. I had shied away from that label, but with this new view, I acknowledged to myself that I was on this spectrum, and this was the missing piece of my puzzle. In 2020, I made the pivotal decision to stop drinking.

THE PANDEMIC AND A NEW BEGINNING

Quitting drinking just before the pandemic was a blessing in disguise. As the world grappled with lockdowns and many turned to alcohol, I was building my sobriety. Returning to the world of speaking and conferences after two years sober, I faced new challenges, especially at alcohol-centric dental events. I felt proud yet isolated, struggling to fit in while staying true to my sober journey.

THE BIRTH OF SOBER LIFE ROCKS

Everything changed in October 2023 when I was invited to speak on the mind, body & spirit panel at the DeW retreat. There, I discovered I wasn’t alone. Many in the audience were also sober, yet felt isolated. This revelation, along with a lunch conversation with Margy Schaller, sparked the idea for Sober Life Rocks. Our vision was clear: no one should feel alone at a dental meeting again, regardless of what’s in their cup.

CONSCIOUS CHOICES: CRAFTING YOUR DESTINATION THROUGH MINDFUL LIVING

In the grand tapestry of life, each thread weaves a unique story of resilience, choices, and transformation. My journey, a profound blessing, has at many times been like standing at the foot of a mountain that you’ve never been able to summit. The trek where the negative chatter echoes with each step forward. Hearing ‘spicy’ Sarah say, “Why are you here, you aren’t worthy of being here… doing this… you’ll never…” How many times have you doubted and delayed something because it was YOU that you had to overcome? My life has been full of moments like that. Those moments of doubt, quiet despair, and darkness have been some of my biggest blessings. They have been the finest masterful teacher about making conscious choices.

We’ve all encountered those moments, the dark corners of existence that we’d rather keep hidden behind the current, or that locked door. The moment I found myself in that place—a place once in my world synonymous with a selfish act of ignorance—was a pivotal turning point. In my dimly lit room, surrounded by unpacked boxes meant for our dream home, I sat in contemplation. The gun in the nightstand was within reach, promising an escape from the overwhelming chaos that my life had become. An embarrassing spectacle. The nightstand had the pull of a promise; a promise of peace, stillness, and nothingness.

Questions swirled in my mind, much like a wind howling around the jagged peaks of that challenging mountain: “How did I end up here? How could I have been so blind to a relationship built on deception and infidelity?” “Was I blinded by the rock on my finger?” “How stupid could you be?” “What will you do now, your business is shattered.” Everyone will say, I told you so.” These questions morphed into desperate statements, yearning for it all to end. I just wanted to BE just me.

I unwrapped those brightly, perfectly wrapped Christmas presents meant for the upcoming holiday, since, financially, this was not the time to be frivolous. I unwrapped each box to choose the couple that would mean the most to my boys. With the torn wrapping paper all around me, the weight of despair pressed upon me, like the crushing boulder perched precariously on the mountain’s edge. The easy way out was within arm’s reach, like a treacherous path leading to the edge of nothingness.

And then the reminder on my phone chimed, and like a sudden bolt of lightning jolting in the Arizona monsoon, a realization struck me. I had to reprimand myself for not being ready–I had a lunch date with a friend. A lifeline that had been thrown, even when I hadn’t told anyone I was drowning.

It’s astonishing how a simple choice, as delicate as a fragile flower pushing through a crack in the side of the mountain, or a small act of kindness, like a shimmering glimmer of sunlight breaking through the storm clouds, can alter the course of a life. That lunch turned into happy hour, unknowingly set this derailed train back on its tracks after it had careened off, much like a hiker finding her footing on treacherous terrain. Don’t get me wrong, I continued to stumble, and it took conscious choice after conscious choice to stay on the path. I tell you without any hesitation, get back up, look up, stand up, and breathe.

When I say I have everything to live for, it’s not an exaggeration. I am abundantly blessed to walk this earth, having experienced love, natural childbirth (in the back of a car with one of them), my family, my career of clinical practice, business ownership, the corporate world, and a lifetime of friendships. All of the highs and the lows. Through it all, I found my tribe—a warm oasis amidst the vast, daunting landscape of the mountain, or so we think it’s daunting. And then it’s not. You climb it, and then another one, and another one. You just keep going. It is a choice, a conscious choice. When you make that conscious choice, choosing joy, no matter what, your life is altered forever. I choose joy when I hike, I choose joy when I cold plunge, I choose joy when I meditate, and I choose to be joyful and grateful no matter what. It is just a conscious choice.

It all boils down to putting yourself first on the list and making that choice that you matter. It’s a deliberate decision to determine what I want, how grandly I want to live and love, and how I wish to express the unique gift I possess. It has been in an instant (so many times), to choose my life of self-expression, power, and contribution.

Throughout my life, it’s been a journey—a commitment to serve, not for recognition but simply to serve. The discipline and care I brought to my career were reflections of my inner strength, a strength tested time and time again in so many ways. The suicide of my brother was a shock that reverberated through the very core of my being. In the aftermath, I grappled with grief and despair so profound, to then find myself teetering on that same edge so many times. The embarrassing engagement and the decline of the business for a period. What was the difference, I ask myself that often–why am I still here? God’s plan for my life is not complete, and I have so much to continue to accomplish and experience. What was it really? I can point to, having had the experience of being the sister that lost a brother to suicide, a sister that no longer had a brother to call, having had the experience of being the family left with a huge hole. How could I ever do that to my family…. It was a conscious choice.

Yet, in that darkness, it sat on my heart: I had the plan. From that deep hole, surrounded by torn paper and

ribbon, that reminder notification, and the lifeline lunch, I emerged. It was there that I discovered the spark of resilience that would become the bedrock of my journey. It was a choice—an active decision to seek the bright light amid the shadows, to embrace the smallest glimmers of hope, and to be grateful for even the tiniest gestures. These choices allowed me to breathe, expand into my greatness, and tap into my true power.

Writing about my journey brings so many moments of laughter and smiles as I reflect on the humor of it all. I sit in laughter at some of the ludicrous choices I’ve made that turned out to be invaluable life lessons. It’s all a choice, a conscious choice.

Speaking of choices, as a single woman, I made the choice to plunge into the world of online dating—a journey that was equal parts amusing and appalling. The ‘nightmares’ of dating in the digital age provided not just stories to share but also lessons in human nature and self-worth. These experiences, though sometimes disheartening, never diminished my belief in love or the importance of staying true to oneself. It’s a conscious choice to view life as bright and colorful, full of joy, even when reflecting on those crazy experiences. So now I choose to cold plunge; it’s so much more productive. I see the humor in it all!

With the global chaos that affected everyone, myself included. It was a time of introspection and reevaluation because it was wrapped up with all the other stuff that pushed me into a corner, and it was the pivotal moment of a conscious choice that has always helped get me to the light. I transformed the challenges posed by this global upheaval into opportunities for growth and inspiration. My ‘to-do’ list evolved into a roadmap for self-discovery and impact. My choices became mindful and heartcentered, marking a shift in how I lived my life. When that shift came, life as I knew it stopped, and my conscious choices led me to where I truly belonged.

My journey represents the power of conscious choices in crafting one’s biggest abundant life. Every decision, whether in my personal life or professional endeavors, has been a step toward a deeper understanding of myself and the world around me.

In sharing my story, I hope to inspire others to recognize the power they hold within themselves. The path to crafting one’s destination is not about avoiding challenges but about facing them with courage, making conscious choices, and finding strength in every step. It’s about understanding that every experience, whether good or bad, shapes us, sharpens us, and surrounds us. True abundance lies in living life with intention, mindfulness, joy, and a heart full of love. See it, seek it, and show it –it is a conscious choice. It’s about choosing joy and embracing true abundance at every turn. A conscious choice to be your most powerful self, a vessel that pours out love in everything you do and how you be. It changes your path, because you now see your future as the bright, expansive energy, and you are ready to live abundantly. Be that person who invites someone to lunch that turns into a happy hour; you never know how deeply you will impact the world with your one small gesture; it’s all a conscious choice.

A RECIPE FOR TOGETHERNESS (AND MOUSSAKA)

In the world of dentistry, where our days often revolve around the care of others, it’s essential to find moments of connection and joy. One such delightful ritual that brightens my days is the morning huddle with Tari and Nyasha. Tari is our esteemed project manager and executive director, and Nyasha is our sales and marketing guru. Both of whom are based in Zimbabwe. We dive into our daily tasks, discuss what we need from each other, and set goals for the day. And amidst this professional camaraderie, there’s a special touch of warmth every Monday, as we share stories and savor the joy of the weekend.

Recently, my dear friend Tari shared her love for Moussaka during one of these morning huddles, which brought back memories of a recipe that has been a constant in my life for over 50 years. This dish has a special place in my heart, originating from a cookbook gifted to my husband Tom and me at one of our early bridal showers.

Moussaka, a layered casserole with eggplant, meat sauce, and a creamy béchamel topping, holds more than just culinary significance for me. It’s a tradition that spans decades, especially during the fall season. Little did I know that this cherished recipe would weave its way into the fabric of a heartwarming story about friendship, commitment, and a dream come true.

Tari and Nyasha, colleagues from afar, embarked on a journey to the United States to attend a retreat. What started as a dream eventually unfolded into a beautiful reality, marked by their determination, sacrifices, and unwavering commitment. After navigating the complex visa processes and leaving behind families, they made their way to Charlotte, North Carolina, with a dream in their hearts.

As they arrived, I found myself in Ohio, celebrating my brother’s wedding and my own birthday. Little did I know that a surprise awaited me upon my return. The duo had planned something truly special, a gesture that reflected the depth of our connection and the essence of teamwork.

Upon picking them up at the hotel on that Sunday morning, we experienced the uplifting energy of an evangelical church, a first for me as a Catholic. The day unfolded with preparations for the upcoming retreat, a true team effort that involved stuffing dates with peanut butter, wrapping them in bacon, and assembling goodie bags. Brian, our graphics and art director extraordinaire, joined in to ensure everything was picture-perfect.

Amidst the laughter and camaraderie, Moussaka played its part. I had prepared it in advance, letting the flavors meld together in the oven, creating a dish that not only satisfies the palate but also symbolizes the coming together of different elements — much like the bond we share in the world of dentistry.

As we sat down to savor the layers of Moussaka, it wasn’t just a meal; it was a celebration of friendship, hard work, and dreams fulfilled. THRESHOLD WORK

At the age of 21, I had my first child. In those early days, I found myself navigating the sleepless nights and shouldering the tremendous responsibility of providing and nurturing a child all on my own. While it was a challenging experience, it turned out that I had a knack for it, and I loved the role of momma. Little did I know, motherhood would become my greatest life and leadership coach, teaching me invaluable lessons along the way.

Looking back, one of the most significant lessons I learned during my journey as a mother is what I now refer to as “Threshold Work.” This concept emerged from my moments of transitioning between work and home. I realized that if I didn’t pause at the threshold of either realm and address what I was bringing with me, things could easily turn sideways, and I might not be operating as the truest essence of myself.

I vividly recall a particular moment from “back in the day.” It was one of those days when everything seemed to go wrong. I had a tough day at the practice. Every appointment seemed to run behind. The doctor was in a terrible mood and unable to control his emotions. The technology wasn’t cooperating, and on top of all that, I wasn’t feeling well myself. As the end of the day approached, I dreaded leaving my job, knowing I had to rush to pick up my baby from daycare, only to return to my

tiny apartment for a quick, unsatisfying meal so I could head off to my next job of cleaning dental practices in my community. But before leaving the house, I had to gather all the things that would allow me to execute the second job with Baby Boy Jordan attached to the front side of my body in the kiddo carrier. Yes, that’s right, I vacuumed and polished with baby J in tow. All of this to provide and prevent myself from becoming a statistic. These 14-hour days and the balancing act of work, motherhood, poor culture in the work environment, no money, and fatigue were hard. Exhaustion had taken its toll on me.

When I finally arrived at my son’s daycare to pick him up, I was short-tempered and uninterested in the artwork he proudly showed me. He was little and fragile. I led him to question if I liked his artwork. What had I just imprinted on my child because I was distracted, not present, or fully self-aware? Tired and unconsciously showing up to mother him. It was a version of me that I was not proud of, and it took that very moment to make me realize something profound. Regardless of what burdens I carried, it took no more energy to be fully present and cherish the moments right in front of me than it did to be distracted and bitter about the peripheral things in my life.

This newfound awareness sparked a concept that now forms the basis of a topic I teach within my company that I have named - “Threshold Work.” I often hear leaders

expressing their desire for their employees to “leave it at the door” when it comes to personal matters. However, I have come to understand that completely separating personal and professional lives is impossible. Baggage, emotions, problems, and feelings inevitably cross the threshold, no matter how hard we try to keep them at bay.

Instead of resisting this truth of human nature, I believe in embracing it and doing the necessary “Threshold Work.” This practice involves acknowledging and addressing our own personal challenges while still striving to be the best versions of ourselves before crossing the proverbial thresholds in our lives. If we all developed deep selfawareness and took control of our own stuff, I believe our world would change for the better. By leading the charge in cultivating a culture of deep self-reflection and threshold work, we create an environment where people are respected for their courage in facing their personal struggles while still leaning into the best versions of themselves.

Throughout my journey, I have realized that each threshold we encounter in life presents an opportunity for growth and transformation. Whether it’s the transition from work to home, or any other significant change, taking a moment to pause, reflect, and consciously shift our mindset can have a profound impact on ourselves and those around us.

As I continue to navigate the beautiful chaos of motherhood, I find solace in knowing that every threshold crossed is a chance to embrace the present moment, lean into gratitude, and be a source of positivity in the lives of

those around me.

Motherhood has taught me that no matter what challenges we face, we have the power to shape our experiences and create a life filled with love, resilience, personal growth, and high performance.

1. Take some time to sit before crossing a “threshold” and practice deep breathing exercises for a few moments: Focus on your breath as it moves in and out of your body. Feel the air coming in and out of your lungs, and observe any sensations that come up during this process.

Notice how these may be impacting your decisions and how you are viewing yourself right now at this moment. Also, pay close attention to your body. Meat Sauce:

2 tablespoons butter

1 cup finely chopped onion

1 ½ lb. ground chuck or lamb

1 clove garlic, crushed

½ teaspoon dried oregano leaves

1 teaspoon dried basil leaves

½ teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon salt

Dash pepper

2 cans (8oz.) tomato sauce

Cream Sauce:

Two tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons flour

½ teaspoon salt

Dash pepper

2 cups milk

2 eggs

½ cup Parmesan cheese

½ cup Cheddar cheese

2 tablespoons dry bread crumbs

3 medium eggplants washed and dried

½ cup melted butter

Meat sauce:

In hot butter in 3 ½ quart Dutch oven, sauté onion, chuck/lamb, garlic, stirring until brown – 10 minutes. Add herbs, spices, tomato sauce: bring to boiling, stirring. Reduce heat: simmer, uncovered, ½ hour.

Halve unpared eggplant lengthwise; slice crosswise, ½ inch thick. Place in bottom of broiler pan: sprinkle lightly with salt and brush lightly with olive oil or butter. Broil, 4 inches from heat, 4 minutes per side, or until golden.

Make Cream Sauce:

In a medium saucepan, melt butter. Remove from heat; stir in flour, salt, and pepper. Add milk gradually. Bring to boiling, stirring until mixture is thickened. Remove from heat. In a small bowl, beat eggs with a wire whisk. Beat in some hot cream sauce mixture to saucepan; mix well; set aside.

Preheat oven to 350F. To assemble casserole: In bottom of a shallow 2-quart baking dish (12 by 7½ by 2 inches) layer half of eggplant, overlapping slightly; sprinkle with 2 tablespoons each grated Parmesan and Cheddar cheese. Stir bread crumbs into meat sauce; spoon evenly over eggplant in casserole; then sprinkle with 2 tablespoons each Parmesan and Cheddar cheese. Layer rest of eggplant slices, overlapping, as before. Pour cream sauce overall. Sprinkle top with remaining cheese.

Bake 35 to 40 minutes, or until golden brown and top is set. If desired, brown top a little more under broiler – 1 minute. Cool slightly to serve. Makes 12 servings.

SUCCESS TO THOSE TO WHOM MUCH IS GIVEN, MUCH IS EXPECTED.

Legends of servant leadership, of creating inspiration in communities, of uniting and empowering others often start with a story of resilience; sometimes trauma, and often hardship. Anne Duffy’s beginnings in shepherding women were quite different. She grew up cared for and continues to be appreciated by those closest to her. She grew up in a family exercising kindness, faith, and, above all else, love for one another; a family who raised ‘five beautiful humans’.

One of two sisters, Anne’s dad called her and Doots (her sister) ‘pushy broads,’ in the most loving way. She’s a woman who unapologetically moves to the beat of her own drum, and is a visionary with a slight challenge that lied in logistics. To this day, Anne continues to be celebrated by her friends, family, and above all, her husband, whom she admits she still loves to kiss.

Anne’s motto through the gifts bestowed onto her is: ‘To those to whom much is given, much is expected.’ Not to say that her life wasn’t without challenges. She married a successful executive who traveled a lot; a man who later, as the entrepreneur that he was, started a prosperous company. Anne shared that there were many times during which she shook the proverbial fist at God, wanting to scream, ‘I didn’t ask for this. This is too much.’

But she didn’t get stuck in that mud. She didn’t let the messy middle get to her. She prayed incessantly. She prayed for the courage, the ability, and the will to combat that which was in front of her. And after she discovered what was holding her back from her God-given talents, she turned that same prayer into praise.

She went from begging for courage to being grateful for the courage. Anne is the very opposite of what we often see in people who grow up supported, people who turn entitled, and sometimes even narcissistic. Anne was cherished, and she is cherished, yet she’s never acted as if the world revolves around her. It’s quite the opposite, she lives as if she had been created to serve the world that gave her so much.

I was moved to write this article not just in awe or gratitude for what she’s given me, personally. I was moved to write it as an ode, as living proof, with myself as a scribe, a witness to the greater good of Anne’s doing. I was moved to write it within minutes of being at this year’s DeW retreat just a few days ago. I was moved when I saw her pick up the microphone and choked up with tears amidst a group of 150+ incredible women. She didn’t tear up as the emotional woman we often get accused of being. No, she got choked up because she was able to feel the presence of something bigger than her, because she was

able to feel a connection that, we, as women, have with one another.

The morning after our first day at the retreat, I wrote Anne and my close mentors, that the meeting was nothing short of a miracle. It felt as if God was playing chess, and we were his pieces. He aligned and moved the pieces, into circles and places, for us, women in dentistry, not just to connect or collaborate, but also, and above, to heal.

Time and time again, I felt placed in groups of women who were to be my light and for whom I could do the same. This experience was not just unique to me. This experience was mystical because Anne has lived her life putting faith and God’s love above all else. And that God’s love that she felt was the love she dispensed. It was mystical because Anne prayed for it to be purposeful. Because she lived in union with the Holy Spirit and she opened the door to have it be moved onto us.

I know I am not the only one who sees her as divinely driven and divinely delivered to us in the moments when we are about to break. I am not the only one whose faith has been strengthened by her leadership, and not the only one whose life is forever changed because of her presence.

Lani Grass interviewed Anne on our last day of the retreat. It was a moment where we were all able to put her on the pedestal she deserved. We were able to celebrate her and get to know her. Anne began with a preface by saying that she was a little embarrassed and humbled by the request.

Anne told us about her upbringing, she told us the love story that she and Tom (her husband) still live out. She told us about DeW’s inception in 2016, of the time that she’d had enough of hearing yet another story about a woman, her friend, being disrespected in the industry. She told us: ‘It was finally time to DeW something about it.’

The humble beginnings of Dental Entrepreneur Woman were based on selflessly highlighting other women. It was about standing together rather than in competition. It happened in an organic growth, in a toast to women in dentistry. Anne didn’t necessarily expect to lead what she’d created, just like she had no idea that at the age of 70, she’d be wearing hot pants and fishnet stockings.

Anne united strong, ambitious, hard-working, and successful women in the audience. We were there as multi-passionate, potent women. Women in dentistry who have set out to change… no, to disrupt, the world in dentistry. The law of reciprocity didn’t apply here. We were simply not there for the taking.

We lived true to Anne’s motto: to whom is much given,

much is expected. Rather than asking for connection and collaboration, like professionals are used to at networking events, we were there to give selflessly to one another. I heard narrative after narrative of the gifts we’d exchanged with one another. I was lucky to be given onto, and I pray that I returned enough in exchange. Once again, God’s chess pieces were moved to where they needed to be in order to improve lives, encourage growth, create change, and find acceptance within ourselves – within each other. So many tears were shed, that, in this expectation, tissues were packed in the goodie bags.

I spoke at Anne’s event about the disservice we do ourselves by remaining humble. I spoke 1 about how we write our challenges in stone and our celebrations in sand; celebrations that are swept up by the ocean and forgotten soon enough, challenges that remain, and which we revisit and reimagine daily.

I felt the women in the audience painfully relating to oversimplifying their mistakes, apologizing for their accomplishments, and waiting for recognition. A friend came up to me and said how much she was able to connect to my monologue. We winked at each other and promised to revisit the conversation at a later time. Amidst the 150+ women, other speakers, and the discussions, we simply didn’t find each other or the time.

We attempted to grab lunch right after the meeting and also before our flights to no avail. But what did happen, what needed to happen, what was planned by a power greater than we could imagine – was us sitting next to one another on a plane, a flight we didn’t know we shared, despite the fact that we were going to two different parts of the world.

What did happen was an awakening of a sisterhood that we both needed to help our journey along. This was not luck or chance, nor did it happen by accident. Some might call it kismet; in The Alchemist they call it maktub, 2 3 I call it Devine Intervention.

Right after the retreat, Shelly Otte wrote me: We are still holding every single moment, from this last week, sacredly in our heart, grasping on to it with hope. We find it hard to release the impact we so beautifully expressed in the company of one other.

Anne, you have voiced our struggles and reasons for celebrating so perfectly over the last 5 years. We want to speak what we feel, and we want to make sure that you hear us loudly; thus, we write these words in stone, never to be washed by the ocean. You are our light and our love, and in following you, we are that to each other. Can we ever do justice or write a profound enough tribute to a woman who used the Holy Spirit within her to share His

love with all of us? We can certainly try.

I hope you understand that I speak for many of us who leaned into that love and received the gift. Many of us went into the retreat telling ourselves: “Go and be open,” the words still writing themselves in our minds and in our hearts. We left knowing what was next. Was there selfdoubt? Yes. Was there fear? Heck yes! But more than that, there is hope! Because someone has met you on a cliff and gave you the gift of seeing your own self in a different light and with a different kind of love.

You stay true to your promise of being open, and, for once, you’re quiet enough to hear the whisper of the Holy Spirit to wholeheartedly allow yourself to be vulnerable and receive the message.

I’m in disbelief at how God has moved us as His chess pieces to bring good. All you have to do is look for it. As I attempt to put that retreat in perspective, I am at a loss for words; something that doesn’t happen frequently. I, myself, pray that as I write this, I can do justice to the gifts that Anne has spread through the audience of 150+ women. The seeds planted, the hands held, the moments of bravery, vulnerability, and honesty will spread across many more women.

They will spread across our kids and spouses, our clients and patients, our neighbors and even strangers. The power of connection was experiencing a true human bond at the hand of Anne’s direction and under her guidance. I simply no longer believe in circumstance or coincidence. I have never been more sure that a power greater than myself, greater than all of us, is eternally present. God’s love is an invisible safety net. It’s always been there and always will be; all we have to do is believe it, see it, feel it, and live it. Anne is living proof of that.

As a hygienist, once I polish my patients’ teeth, I know my patients want to leave with a brighter, whiter smile, so I will add a little whitening gel with a micro-tip applicator to their front teeth, top and bottom. At the end of my polishing session, I polish in the whitening gel and voilà!

You guessed it!

My patients have a brighter-little bit whiter smile. It took only two minutes to polish. I pull out that mirror, and I have them look at their teeth again. It’s exciting to see my patients’ faces with amazement and happiness when they now see how beautiful their teeth look!

The point here is to ask fun questions about your patients’ smile goals. I have switched up my question to be very entertaining. The above are only a few questions I ask. If there is a multi-billion-dollar lottery happening, I have fun asking patients what they want their smiles to look like when they win the lottery.
