ELIZABETHTOWN Ñ Christine Bourjade believes more stewards are needed to protect fragile ecosystems on Adirondack mountaintops. In August, the part-time resident created and seeded a fund designed to bolster the existing the High Peaks Summit Stewardship Program. The freshly-minted #507 Fund also attracted donations from the Nature Conservancy, the Adirondack Mountain Club, Adirondack Council and the Adirondack Forty-Sixers. Bourjade hopes $1,000,000 will eventually be raised. On Monday, Oct. 27, the Montreal native asked the Essex County Board of Supervisors for a resolution of support and $500. CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

ELIZABETHTOWN Ñ Elise Stefanik has won the race to represent New YorkÕ s 21st Congressional District. Stefanik, 30, soundly defeated opponents Aaron Woolf, a Democrat, and Green Party candidate Matt Funiciello, after polls came in late Tuesday, Nov. 4, putting a definitive end to the prolonged race for the open seat being vacated by Congressman Bill Owens. While not all of the 563 precincts in the 12 counties that make up the sprawling 21st Congressional District had reported balloting numbers by press time, it was clear that Stefanik had easily won the seat. As of press time, Stefanik held a commanding 49 percent of the vote, compared to 39 percent for Woolf and 12 percent for Funicello. At 10:40 p.m. Stefanik addressed her supporters at the Queensbury Hotel. Ò Tonight we have made a little history in the North Country,Ó Stefanik said. Ò Every vote I take I will ask myself one question, will this help the residents of the North Country.Ó Ò Aaron and Matt were both gracious and I expressed my appreciation to them for their hard-fought races. You get to know your opponents well and get to know they are very good people.Ó Ò I will work hard everyday to earn your respect and your trust, and hopefully your support,Ó said Stefanik to those who may not have voted for her.
