There were a large number of people who turned out in Lewis for the first trail project at Thrall Dam Park. The Town of Lewis, Essex County, and Champlain Area Trails are hosting their second project to develop multi-use trails at Thrall Dam Park in Lewis. They invite volunteers of all ages to meet at Lewis Town Hall to take part in the next phase of trail-making on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 8 a.m. to noon.Volunteers are asked to bring shovels, clippers, loppers, and/or hand saws. WILLSBORO Ñ Town officials are nearing a decision on the future of the Saw Mill Dam. A relic of the townÕ s industrial past, the structure is full of rot and sags about a third of a foot. Water now flows beneath the timber frame, which spans some 250 feet across the Boquet River that cuts through the center of town. Failure is pending, said Roy Schiff, an engineer from Milone & MacBroom who presented his firm’s assessment at a public meeting last month. For the past 18 months, Vic Putnam, an official with the Greater Adirondack Resource Conservation and Development Council, has been coordinating the effort to explore possible solutions. Putnam said the town could either repair, replace or remove the structure, which was originally built in the 1890s to provide power to sawmills, ironworks and other downstream mills. The typical lifespan for this type of structure is from 40 to 70 years, making the project long overdue. If the dam bursts, detritus would flow downstream and cause blockages. Cleanup costs would presumably be expensive and bank erosion also might pose an issue. OPTIONS

Officials could opt to construct a replacement out of concrete, an option that would not change the aesthetics of the downtown area.
