Lake Placid’s SkyRide opens

THOUSANDS ATTEND GALA PARADE

Lift rides for visitors, athletes, coaches By Kim Dedam STAFF WRITER

LAKE PLACID |Visitors, athletes, coaches and officials have a new ride to the Olympic ski jump towers: the SkyRide Gondola. The $2.9 million project was completed in less than a year using equipment and systems supplied and installed by Doppelmayr Garaventa Group based in Switzerland. “The SkyRide gondola is the latest piece in our continued effort to modernize the Lake Placid Olympic Jumping Complex for not only the world-class athletes that train and compete there, but also for the thousands of guests that visit the complex yearround,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in announcing launch of the new winter sport infrastructure. It is one of several renovations planned at the Ski Jump Complex.

locations in the Adirondacks. The first fresh farm market was placed inside the Keeseville Pharmacy in Keeseville; the second inside the Mountain Weaver’s Farm Store on Main Street in Port Henry. Both local shops address the lack of grocery options in a region replete with “food deserts,” areas where access and/or distance to food markets or grocery stores proves challenging to a large number of people. “The Tool Kit provides a model to share with other communities around the nation,” AdkAction spokesperson Hannah Grall told the Sun. It will clearly lay out work needed to establish Farmacy markets and all the challenges that go along with this kind of project. AdkAction is Keynote Sponsor of the Food Justice Summit to be held at the Wild Center on Feb. 27. “We will also highlight our food access work t hrough pa r t icipation in the Well-Fed Essex County Collaborative panel, and specifically, discuss the promising Double Up SNAP program that we are piloting at the Keeseville Farmacy,” Grall said

in a news release. “AdkAction will introduce the Keynote speaker, Austin Fredrick, who is deputy director of the Thurman Arnold Project at Yale University, an initiative established to generate and disseminate scholarship to impact competition enforcement and policy. He is currently working on a book that calls for restoring the balance of power in America’s food system in favor of farmers, workers, and small businesses.” At-risk and low-income families often face insurmountable obstacles when it comes to accessing fresh food, Grall said. “Many rural communities in the North Country experience high food insecurity rates due to limited access to transportation; limited access to SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)-authorized businesses; and the inability to afford fresh fruits and vegetables.” Farmacy has established a supply line for its markets from at least 13 local farms which provide over 120 different products. They plan to increase Farmacy programs in the North Country this summer. ■

ELIZABETHTOWN | Essex County Supervisors have asked Gov. Andrew Cuomo to reinstate $300,000 that was cut out of the state budget, money used to help offset the cost of trucking garbage to a Franklin County landfill. The payment is part of a deal made 25 years ago, when the Pataki administration outlawed landfills within the Adirondack Park. That ruling hit Essex County particularly hard, since it’s the only county entirely within the Blue Line. “We’re the only county in the state that isn’t allowed to have a landfill,” said Moriah Supervisor Tom Scozzafava. “For the governor to pull this $300,000 is just wrong.”
