WILLSBORO Ñ Teresa Sayward stood where she had once watched over her children and grandchildren as they played basketball in perhaps the most famed North Country gym, Ò the pit.Ó Now, she looked out over a carpeted gathering space with a small kitchen area, dinner tables and a stage for shows and events, all part of the transformation of the former Willsboro Central School building into the Champlain Valley Senior Community. Ò They have done just an amazing job,Ó said Sayward, who has been involved in the resurrection of the building as a town supervisor and member of the state Assembly before her retirement last year. Ò I was here when there was a hole in the ceiling and have seen the progress

throughout, and it is just breathtaking.Ó Sayward was just one of many who walked the halls of the former school, now transformed into a senior living facility under the development of Eli Schwartzberg, remembering where their classrooms were while taking in the new rooms and facilities that make up the renovation during an open house and grand opening ceremony June 15.

“The first thing that I had to do was find my old classroom,” Lorilee Sheehan, who taught at the school, said. Ò It was great to see my name and my three kidsÕ names on the wall. ItÕ s just breathtaking.Ó Ò It is unbelievable what Eli has been able to do,Ó Willsboro School Board member Bruce Hale said. Ò His attention to detail and preservation is what makes this what it is. They went above and beyond what they had to do to maintain aspects of the school.Ó

Ò It was a longer journey than I had planned, but the outcome is greater than I had ever dreamed,Ó Schwartzberg said during the opening ceremony. Ò I am so glad to see such a tremendous outpouring of support for this. I know how dear this building is for so many in the community who went to school here. I hope that you can be proud of what has been done here.Ó Sayward said she was pleased that someone stepped up to take on the challenge of renovating the building. Ò This could have been lost very easily to our community,Ó she said. Ò Without the vision of the school board at the time of the sale and the support of the community, this building would be just as it was, only worse.Ó CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

Members of the Essex County Finance Committee voted to draft a local law that would require residents of the county to pay a Highway Reuse Tax of $5 per year for passenger vehicles and $10 for commercial vehicles.

Finance Committee chairman Tom Scozzafava said the idea had been discussed during budget subcommittee meetings and with Essex County Clerk Joe Provoncha, with estimates earning the county between $200,000 and $300,000 in increased annual revenue.

Scozzafava said that the revenue would be used specifically for infrastructure. Ò This additional money will be used solely for highway and bridges,Ó he said. Ò The idea is to keep this additional CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

Horace Nye honors veterans

keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN Ñ The Horace Nye Nursing Home paid tribute to those who served the country June 14 with a Flag Day Veterans Tribute ceremony. Ò Today, we take a moment to honor this symbol of our country and to honor those past and present who have given so much in its defense,Ó said Horace Nye Director Deborah Gifford, who is also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Ò Since my military service, I have always stood a little taller when honoring the flag,” Tim Pierce of the Office of Veterans Affairs said. Ò Old Glory has served as a symbol to our service. Just as the veterans that are here stood ready to defend this nation in the past, so are todayÕ s soldiers, ready to answer the call.Ó The ceremonies not only honored the residents of the home who served but also the

Depot Theatre ready to raise curtain on 35th season

keith@denpubs.com WESTPORT Ñ For 34 years, the Westport train depot has been the home to plays, musicals and more that have continued to grow.

Now in its 35th season, the Depot Theatre will offer four main plays, three On Track midweek events, the Depot Theatre Apprentice Program and gallery receptions and showings. Ò We view this as a celebration of the 35th anniversary of our community theater,Ó Managing Director Angel Wuellner said. Ò We want it to be fun for the audience and we want to show all of the aspects to the theater this year.Ó Wuellner said that the biggest key to the success of the theater has been the support it has received from the Westport community. Ò We are lucky to have the support of the people that we see year round as well as the people who come during the summer,Ó she said. Ò What we are putting on the stage is for this community and something that we hope they are going to enjoy. The people are trusting us to bring something new to them and that it will be something that they are going to like.Ó

Wuellner said that the theater will be hosting two musicals that will be making their premiere at the Depot this summer, starting with Ò Route 66,Ó which opens to audiences Friday, June 28 and runs through Sunday, July 14. Ò All of the people who liked Ô Careless LoveÕ or the Ô Hank WilliamsÕ shows when they were here will like this play,Ó Wuellner said. Ò It features some familiar faces to the Depot stage, and all of the actors play the instruments on stage and the theme speaks to the small town and why it is so special and unique.Ó The other premiere musical will be Ò Funked Up Fairy Tales,Ó which opens Friday, Aug. 9, and runs through Sunday, Aug. 25. Ò It is sort of Ô ShrekÕ on stage,Ó Wuellner said. Ò It has those jokes that the kids will laugh at and the adults will laugh at, but for different reasons. It is a kid-friendly show, but it is not just for kids.Ó Ò Fairy TalesÓ was written by Kirsten Childs, who Wuellner said is a key off-Broadway player. Ò A lot of people were excited when they heard we were able to get a show from her here,Ó she said.

Ducks were launched from the Fanny Swan Bridge and made their way downstream to the finish line, where volunteers in kayaks and canoes picked out the winning trio of the yellow bath toy favorites. The fundraiser earned the department roughly $1,500 ($1,100 after prizes) for the Community Fund, which helps community members who are in need of assistance following a fire, accident or medical emergency. Ellen Stiles was the owner of the first duck to cross the line, winning $250, followed by the ducks of Regis and Doreen Canning ($100) and Dr. Erin Schroeder ($50).

WESTPORT Ñ On June 28, the Essex County Soil and Water Conservation District will offer the required four hour Erosion and Sediment Control training for contractors and developers. The training will be held from 8 a.m. until noon at the Essex County Fairgrounds, 3 Sisco Street, Westport. The training will be presented

by Dave Reckahn, District Manager.

This training is required for all contractors working on projects that disturb more than one acre of soil and have a storm water permit

from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. The permit will require that contractors moving dirt at those sites have at least one trained employee on site on a daily basis.

Training is good for three years. Contractors and developers will have to preregister for the training to receive credits. The training will cost $75 for certification, reference materials and refreshments.

Erosion, sediment control training set

Between the two musicals, the theater will host Ò Boeing, Boeing,Ó the Tony Award-winning show for Best Revival of a Play in 2008, starting Friday, July 19 and running through Sunday, Aug. 4. Ò It is a farce that is so funny and smart,Ó Wuellner said. Ò ItÕ s about sexy stewardesses. It is probably not for the under 13 crowd. Christopher Jones is directing, and I think that it will be something where everyone will have a good time.Ó The final main stage production of the season will be Ò Lombardi,Ó which will open Friday, Aug. 30 and run through Sunday, Sept. 15. Ò It is a drama about coach Vince Lombardi that takes a look at the person behind the persona,Ó Wuellner said. Ò He was a man who was more than just all of the catch phrases and memorable quotes.Ó Promotions around each show include the opening night receptions with the actors following the first show, post-show talkbacks following the first Thursday night production of each show with the exception of Ò Route 66Ó and name your price showings the first Monday of each showÕ s run. Wuellner added that the the-

ater will also try to have tours of the set during its construction. Ò We are looking to see if we can set these tours up leading up to each show,Ó she said.

The On Track single night performance series will take place Tuesdays, with events set for July 9 and 23 along with Aug. 20. The Apprentice Program will hold Shakespeare in the Park performances of Ò HamletÓ Aug. 2-3 at Ballard Park in Westport, while the Radio Mystery Theatre will perform at the Depot Aug. 23-24.

The annual Depot Theatre Gala will be held on Saturday, Aug. 10. Ò It will be during the opening weekend of Ô Funked Up Fairy Tales,Õ so we will have a fairy tale theme for the gala,Ó Wuellner said. Ò That is our main event during the season.Ó Depot Gallery shows will include local artists, the return of the Sap Bucket Project and the Second Annual Depot Juried Art Exhibition.

Gallery receptions will be held June 14, July 12, Aug. 21 and Sept. 20.

he FiremenÕ s Golf Tournament, which was hosted by the Westport Country Club on June 1, was a great success, with sixteen teams of four competing in a day of outstanding golf.

Scottish folk music legend Archie Fisher makes a return appearance next Thursday,June 27, at the Whallonsburg Grange. On Friday evening the place to be was in Essex, the College For Every Student held an open house in their new quarters located behind the Essex Post Office. This is a beautiful and most useful building and such a great organization to have their headquarters here locally. This event was followed by one of the Essex Community Concerts featuring the Ò Goff BrothersÓ . Jonathan, Joseph, Matthew, Mitchell are such talented musicians and they treated us to a concert fit for Kings & Queens.

They are spectacular in playing their instruments and still very young. Then Saturday featured the local Town Wide Yard Sales with sales featured on most of our streets.

The big event was the Grand Open House at the new Champlain Valley Senior Community; a total reuse of an old building into a beautiful and most useful new building. Large crowds of the public came out to witness the new space to offer a very caring way of life for our senior citizens. If you were unable to get there this past weekend, they would

IÕ ve made a couple of recent trips around Wickham Marsh. The lily pads are growing nicely and the whole preservation is gorgeous and very relaxing. We managed to see one of the ospreys hunting as well as a pheasant walking across the road with six or seven little puff balls of babies. We also espied three turtles sunning themselves on fallen logs near the edge of the marsh. Every trip brings another great sighting of some beautiful creature making the Marsh very much worth repeat visits. It was a shame to see some garbage strewn around the edge of the road and request people to pick up after themselves when driving around the preservation maintaining its natural beauty. Enjoy!

Looking ahead, on Saturday, June 29, the trail society, CATS, will offer a four hour wilderness first aid course at the Essex fire house. The cost is $30 and more information can be found at the CATS web site. A recent study of visitors to Essex County found that hiking is the main reason theyÕ re here. While the CATS trails may not pack the wallop of a climb up Algonquin or Marcy, they offer a quieter, more intimate experience that to my mind is just as rewarding. You donÕ t have throngs of day trippers to contend with, nor rock-infested, overused trails, and youÕ ll be home in plenty of time for lunch.

No opposition voiced to changing bar hours

katherine@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN Ñ No one spoke against Essex CountyÕ s proposal to move last call at local bars from 4 to 3 a.m. during a public forum at the Old County Courthouse June 13.

In fact, most of the attendees said closing bars down at 2 a.m. would be more appropriate. Currently, business owners in Essex County can serve alcohol between noon and 4 a.m. on Sunday and 8 a.m. to 4 a.m. every other day.

Ò In the Adirondack Park, where retail development is often restricted to our small hamlets, alcohol outlets are often tucked in close to school and residential housing. We are all working to revitalize life in our small villages,Ó said Mac McDevitt of the Essex County Prevention Team. Ò Bars stay open into the early hours of the morning and have a negative impact on the quality of life in our villages and actually work against economic development of village vitality.Ó Ticonderoga Police Chief Mark Johns said the three clublike bars in Ticonderoga have patrons hanging out in the bar rooms until at least a half an hour after the 4 a.m. cut-off when all alcoholic beverages must be removed from the bar.

From reporter Katherine Clark: Ò Right now is a time of endless possibilities. Which can seem liberating or crushing. Looking back it is hard to imagine that my classmates and I at 18 and younger were capable of making the decisions that determined the course of our entire lives. Our lives went in different directions based on the colleges we attended, the majors we picked and changed or the jobs we were hired into.

At the time that I graduated high school I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life but I really had no idea how I would get there. Everyone told me journalism is a dying field that will have little to no jobs by the time I graduated. The fact that I was able to start writing professionally within a year of graduating college and stay within the Adirondack Park still amazes me.

My best advice to graduating seniors is to keep your mentors close, stay true to your passions, choose friends who will be a true support to your goals in life and career and not an anchor against the current of your success, and be open to taking paths you might not have planned to take.Ó From Assistant Managing Editor Andy Flynn: Ò Do what you love. To the Valley News: A Special ÒT hank YouÓ to all the people who sent the beautiful cards to me during this time of illness. The message that you wrote on the cards was lovely. I loved them and they made me very happy. I keep taking them out and going over them.

I am very grateful for the masses and prayers offered for my special intention. I love the mass and consider it the best gift a person can ever receive.

I am also very thankful to all those who have done so much for me. At this time, a special thank you to Janice Allen, who writes the Willsboro News in the Valley News Paper, once when she listed my address in her news column, it was very wonderful for me because many people were happy to get my address and send the wonderful cards and lovely notes.

I will be forever grateful for everybodyÕ s kindness and thoughtfulness.

To the Valley News: I was pleased to read in the Valley News of the granting of an Adirondack Park Excellence in Design Competition Award to the Town of Essex wastewater facilities. This award should not be considered for buildings alone. Any article or acknowledgement would be most incomplete and tardy without the recognition of the Town wide spirit of cooperation which made the completion possible.

The recent reiteration of the Essex Wastewater System is only a small part of a water, waste and sewage system begun in 1955 when the first nucleus of such a system was initiated by a group of volunteers under the leadership of Supervisor Elvin Cross who began to hand dig trenches and lay in the necessary piping for a Hamlet water system A fine example of the long time Essex spirit of cooperation was shown when Town Board members Supervisor Ron Jackson, l members Suzanne Perley, Steve Sayward, Mark Wrisley, and myself initiated the sewer system planning even though none of them lived in the Essex Hamlet (Clair LaPine joined us two years later) where the waste water system was needed and to be located, While the lack of funds prohibited immediate implementation, it was the initial farsighted preliminary funding for research by the AES engineering firm to prepare engineering specifications which enabled Essex to be positioned to complete the extensive project application. No small measure of thanks are due to former Supervisor Ron Jackson for his perseverance in seeking funding and his subsequent round the clock work in preparing the final project funding in 2007.

Accordingly when funding for Ò shovel readyÓ projects became available, the board had the requisite initial documentation to allow it be considered at the top of the funding list and requested to submit an actual request. Working almost round the clock to completed the project it was Ron JacksonÕ s engineering acumen and Steve SaywardÕ s review which enabled completing the funding request.

But, this effort was not a one or two person show. Citizen cooperation began when Essex won the right to submit a waste water system proposal. Citizens such as Charley Goff, Jim Morgan, Jim Morris made valuable input; property owners Tilly Close and Susan Mallet, old time Essex descendents of the Ross family, generously donated the use of their privately owned land for location of the plant and reed beds; Steve Cunnion moved overnight to provide access to his land, fortuitously removing a last minute stumbling block. The initially submitted building design was changed from an utilitarian structure to the present design after input from Essex residents.It was the rapid response of citizens who would reside in the proposed Sewage District which also enabled meeting funding deadlines. Clearly it was a Town wide effort that enabled institution of the eventual funding.

To demonstrate that the waste water project was the work of many rather than a few I only wish a strong effort would have been made to notify concerned citizens of the award presentation so many of us could have shared in the initial award ceremony when Present Supervisor Boisen accepted the award.

To the Editor Valley News: ÒK eeseville: To Be or Not To Be - Hopes for a Better TomorrowÓ As an independent senior citizen who has lived more than 43 years in this village, and who has seen the good times and the bad times, I must say, in my opinion, it is not the Village that has failed us, but We, the citizens who failed the village by not doing enough to improve the quality of village life.

On the eve of this crucial decision on dissolution, I feel that a last appeal is necessary to those citizens who may yet be undecided or are still having second thoughts. Abe Lincoln unwittingly described Keeseville when he said Òa house divided against itself cannot stand.Ó Certainly, for many years, the village has known this division and cynicism. Some of which was due to some who were found wanting in serving ALL the villageÕ s needs and not just for a privileged few. We are all familiar with the term, ÒC ronyism.Ó Many examples of this past presence are still evident because rightly or wrongly, we tolerated it and allowed it. And from recent acrimonious Village meetings, we still do.

In talking and listening to many people, my sense is that many more citizens of the Village Want to do the right and wise thing and save the identity of a 150+ year old community from disappearing forever from our lives. It is ironic that at long last, although some would disagree, we have a newly elected mayor and board who are now open and eager to do good things for Keeseville and begin the long delayed and MUCH NEEDED improvements which would allow our village to prosper and with it, enhance our quality of life. Good things are starting to happen here. See downtown!

We should give them the CHANCE and TIME to do what they PROMISED us they would do, and want to do. After all, it is only fair-whatÕ s six months or a year more of village life when we already have over 136+ years behind us. Just because the patient is sick doesnÕ t mean automatic euthanasia. After all, as long as the village lives, there is the hope that she will recover. But once sheÕ s gone, you canÕ t get her back. If given enough time with patience and goodwill, good things could be accomplished.

In making my personal decision on the nature of Keeseville, I am reminded of the words of the writer Thomas Paine, who said Òt hese are the times that try menÕ s souls.Ó I am also guided by the words of Patrick Henry, who said ÒI know not what course others may take but as for me. . Ò Well, rightly or wrongly, I intend to vote for Keeseville, may she live long and prosper. Like a beautiful and good woman that has been abused and neglected, if given a chance, she can, like the Phoenix, rise from the ashes of neglect and bloom again and in doing so, regain the affection and respect of all its citizens. This is the least we can do for our home.

I support the Village as a living concept that stands by itselfseparate from all the Village Boards or Towns-that carries with it the weight of history, tradition, community self determination, and identity. This all deserves to be preserved.

How Do Children Learn About Farming?

And on that farm he had some cows, chicks, pigs, ducks, etcÉ ThatÕ s how I started learning about farming when I was a child. I soon learned that not all farms had cows and all the other animals. I was disappointed but understood that farms can still be farms with only one or a few kinds of animals. My farm education was enhanced by regular visits to my uncleÕ s, formerly my grandfatherÕ s farm, and with daily summer walks down the road to see the neighbor farmerÕ s baby pigs. I also visited friends who lived on a farm and got squirted with hot milk right out of the source. Building forts with hay bales and running through cow pastures trying to avoid the cow pies all added to my growing knowledge of farming. It was a gradual education filled with warm summer days and scheduling holiday meals around milking time.

As years went by, I learned that some farms didnÕ t have any animals at all, other than maybe a dog or a cat. They grew crops. Things like peas and grains that were processed in large plants that we drove by as we went into a

nearby city for events there. As a teen-ager, my friends and I always took really deep breaths as we drove by the whiskey distillery, where we knew the local grains had been delivered.

I learned about plants by working in the flower garden with my mother. She had a really green thumb and loved plants and working the soil. I donÕ t think she really wanted to ever leave the farm where she was raised. The flowers, a tomato plant and a few rows of lettuce kept her tied to her roots.

All of this came back to me as I participated in the Annual Agricultural Literacy events at area schools. In the two classes where I read, one second grader said his family had chickens, one little girl admitted to having bunnies and two children lived near the woods. That was the extent of the farming experience for about 30 children in the rural area where I live.

How, I asked myself, are these children and all the others in New York State going to learn about the source of their food and how it is produced? In this day of electronic technology which children are exposed to from almost the moment of their birth, do they even know about Old McDonald?

Luckily there are signs of hope. Schools teachers are willing to invite volunteers into their classrooms for special activities related to farming and agriculture. The recent Agricultural Literacy events around the state are evidence of that. While interacting with the children, it was apparent that they were very open to learning about how

The children remembered what they had learned and seen and were quite happy to share what they had experienced. Reading and stories about agricultural activities and production helped to reinforce that learning.

Teachers around the State have also been participating in training sessions on how to use the Food, Land and People curriculum that has been developed to incorporate agriculture into the everyday lessons on math, literature, science, and the arts. The curriculum, designed for all ages and grades, blends easily into the state required teachings and comes with lesson plans, activities, and teaching aids. Information on the trainings is available for interested teachers and schools from www.agclassroom.org/ny/programs There are other ways for children to learn about agriculture besides going to school.

4-H has been teaching children about farming and other subjects for over 50 years.

Children do not have to live on a farm to participate and, in many cases, do not even have to own an animal. There are general agricultural activities and specific ones, such as dairy, beef, horses, sheep, goats, poultry, rabbits, and, in certain areas, llamas and alpacas. Information on 4-H activities is available from the local 4-H program in the Cornell Cooperative Extension office.

Parents can encourage children to learn about agriculture by taking their children to

area agricultural activities like the County Fair. There farms and 4-Hers demonstrate the results of their activities by having their products and animals exhibited and judged by experts. Children can go to the barns and watch animals being groomed for showing and watch the animals being judged. They may see animals being fed and dairy cows being milked. They may even learn to move quickly if they see and animal raise its tail!

Besides County Fairs, many County Farm Bureaus may hold A Day on the Farm or Open Farms where families can tour the farm and see how it operates. They can ask questions, see demonstrations and participate in activities that are scheduled. They may be able to sample products that are produced on the farm.

FarmersÕ markets are also a place that children can learn about their food and how it is produced. There the farmers are willing to talk with and answer questions about how they grow and harvest the food they have to sell. Children have an opportunity to see food that is fresh, touch and smell it, and sometimes, even taste it.

So, while most children in New York no longer live on a farm, they still have plenty of opportunities to learn about farming and agriculture. If agricultural organizations, schools and teachers, youth organizations, and parents work together, children can experience agriculture in a variety of ways. So, Old McDonald may not be needed anymore, because experience is really the best teacher.

Westport elementary students give to North Country SPCA

keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN Ñ The youngest students at Westport Central School showed up at the North Country SPCA with more than helping hands May 23.

Students in kindergarten through second grade also brought treats and funds for the pets at the new facility located in Elizabethtown, including a donation check of $260.67. Ò We started in the classrooms May 1 with collection jars that the kids decorated and asked the students to bring in donations,Ó second grade teacher Lynn Bubbins said. Ò Second grade alone earned $199. We are going to continue to collect through June 14

when we will have a final total.”

The three classes annually collect money and donations for the shelter, which was previously located in Westport before moving to their new location earlier this year. Ò It is a great tradition,Ó NCSPCA Executive Director Jessica

Hartley said. “We are very grateful and this was their first chance to see the new facility. It is great to have them here to let them see the animals and building because tours like this were a little more challenging in the old building.Ó

Willsboro Academy science students travel to Fletcher Allen

WILLSBORO Ñ Willsboro Academy students recently visited Fletcher Allen sponsored by the Hudson Mohawk Area Health Education Center M.A.S.H. program.

This program is a day long program where participants are introduced to healthcare career options through hands-on activities in various departments of a healthcare facility.

Students from Willsboro Central SchoolÕ s fourth, fifth, and sixth grade Academy competed to attend the day long events at Fletcher Allen. Students were asked to research and present a disease of their choice on a Saturday morning in front of a panel of professionals. Diseases researched include Calve Perthes Disease, Bulimia, Cystic Fibrosis, among many more. Judges included Scottie Ginn, former Vice-President of IBM and current Board Member of Fletcher Allen; Julie Frisbie, former teacher and RN at CVPH; and Phyllis Klein, retired teacher and current Willsboro Central School Board Member.

Programs the students experienced were Colonoscopy/Laparoscopy, Full Body Mannequin CPR, Heart and Lung Sounds, Working with Patients, and Solving the Unknown.

The dayÕ s events also included a presentation about how college works and a Healthcare Jeopardy game from UVMÕ s College of Nursing and Health Services. Students who participated included fourth graders Regan Arnold, Robby Drollette, Myah Green, Stephen Leibeck, and Joelle Steeves; fifth graders Margaret Frechette, Trevar Koenig, Kelsey Reynolds, Erinn Walker, and Kaitlyn Wilkins; and sixth graders included Makayla Anson, Chad Denton, Aliceson Drollette,

outstanding,Ó Klein said. Ò If part of the mission of the public school is to help students achieve to the highest level of their ability, then teachers like Derrick are priceless.Ó Ò Programs like this help generate excitement and enthusiasm for science and career aspirations,Ó Superintendent Stephen Broadwell said. Ò This might ignite a spark for one of our students to pursue a career in the health care field.Ó Ò My main goal is to try to excite future medical professionals. This trip was a culmination of a year of planning. The students competed to attend the trip by researching and presenting a disease of their choice,Ó Hopkins said. Ò Students did all the work on their own and did an outstanding job researching, organizing and presenting information, in addition to advocating to the judges why they wanted to go. I am so proud of my students.Ó Students presented on April 20 in HopkinsÕ classroom. All students received a certificate of participation and ribbon. Trophies and ribbons were awarded to the top three students. First place was awarded to Regan Arnold, fourth grade, for his presentation on Scleroderma. Second Place was awarded to Logan Polak, sixth grade, for his presentation on Leprosy. Third place was awarded to Aliceson Drollette, sixth grade, for her presentation on HuntingtonÕ s Disease. The students traveled to Fletcher Allen on Wednesday, May 8. Students wore scrubs, masks, and surgical caps throughout the dayÕ s activities.

NYCO land deal wins second state vote, assembly vote set

The New York State Senate gave its blessing to a proposed state constitutional amendment that would allow for a land exchange between the state and NYCO by a 59-3 vote. The state Assembly also needs to pass the proposed change before it goes to a statewide vote in November. Ò NYCOÕ s continued success is vitally important to our North Country economy and to those who depend on it for their livelihoods,Ó said Sen. Betty Little, who sponsored the bill. Ò WeÕ re at this point thanks in large part to the cooperative work of the Department of Envi-

ronmental Conservation, NYCO and environmental organizations including the Adirondack Council and Adirondack Mountain Club. I applaud them all for their commitment and diligence in finding a solution that will benefit the state and this employer for many years to come.Ó Ò We have been waiting for these votes for a long time,Ó Lewis Supervisor David Blades said. Ò I talked with Assemblyman Dan Stec on Saturday and he was pretty sure that this would get through the Assembly as well. Garden club annual meeting set

WESTPORT Ñ Elizabethtown-Westport Garden Club is hosting its 26th Annual Garden Club Fashion Show Luncheon on Thursday, June 20 at the Westport Hotel and Tavern, next to the Depot Theatre/Amtrak Station in West-

NYCO would share the data and information derived from the exploratory drilling with the Department of Environmental Conservation, which would then appraise the value of Lot 8. The state would then convey Lot 8 to NYCO and, in exchange, NYCO would then convey to the DEC for inclusion in the Forest Preserve at least the same number of acres as is contained in Lot 8, provided that the Legislature would be required to determine that the lands to be received by the state would be equal to or greater than the value of Lot 8, and provided that in no event would the value of the land to be conveyed to the state be less than $1 million. At the end of NYCOÕ s mining operation on Lot 8, NYCO would be required to

convey Lot 8 back to the state for inclusion in the Forest Preserve.

Little also said that the Adirondack Council had voiced their support for the amendment. Ò The Council being on board makes me very happy,Ó Blades said.

Implementation of the amendment would happen next year with legislation providing the specifics of how the amendment would be carried out.

NYCO has 95 full-time employees and an annual payroll of $4.6 million. It has 63 vendors within a 100-mile radius and spends $2.3 million locally per year. It pays $260,000 in local taxes. The expected life of the current mine is three years. It is estimated that mining the ore in Lot 8 could extend the mine life by between 13 to 15 years.

Ò We are not going to come here and promise everybody something because there are always going to be more needs than the resources that we have,Ó Zhou said. Ò One of the major shifts is that we are into the preservation mode. The vast majority of our capital dollars are going into preserving the current system.Ó Ò Our current goal is to keep the current system in operating condition and safe to traffic,” Bonafide said. “Where is the traffic and where do we serve the most taxpayers is the driving issue. In the last couple years, we have dealt with Route 86 and 22 in Willsboro. We are going to try and deal with Route 73, but you have to keep in mind that there is just not enough funds and we are going to have to pick and choose carefully.Ó Zhou said that the state focus has been based on usage of roadways more than condition, which gives the northern region counties a sense that they are receiving less funding than their counterparts closer to Albany. Ò I understand the feeling from the rural counties that most of the money goes to the three major counties surrounding the capital region,Ó he said. Ò Our guiding principle is that we address the most utilized of roads first, so that tends to be in the capital region. That being said, I can assure that we never ignore issues

anywhere. There are needs all over the place, and you are not being ignored. I hope that my being here today proves that.Ó Zhou also said that his office would work harder with local officials to seek advice and provide information on upcoming projects. Ò We should do a better job communicating with the towns and officials before we start doing work in their area,Ó he said. Ò I want to make sure that every project that goes out in the region starts with a good dialogue between us and the local officials because they are not just sprung on the communities.Ó North Elba Supervisor Roby Politi said that he had been contacted several times by Zhou as plans were being made to work on Route 73 between Keene and his town. Ò No one has ever called me up on the phone until you and asked me for thoughts on the road between North Elba and Keene and if I felt that they could do a one lane alternating and

when they could do it,Ó Politi said.

Several supervisors addressed concerns to Zhou. Schroon Supervisor Michael Marnell said Route 9 needed to be repaired because it was hurting emergency responders. Ò They cannot perform work on a patient between the village and Exit 27 because of the road conditions,Ó Marnell said. Ò They are losing six or seven minutes in cases when minutes are critical.Ó Crown Point Supervisor Charles Harrington asked if something could be done at the intersection of Sugar Hill Road and Route 9 in the hamlet. Ò This intersection has caused a lot of concern, especially for those who are not familiar with the area,Ó Harrington said. Ò We have applied for a round-about grant and for crosswalks to be placed and we have been denied on both.

The problems are especially when you are heading south.Ó

Jay Supervisor and County Board Chairman Randy Douglas said he would like to see work done to resolve drainage concerns in Au Sable Forks. Ò We have no drainage on Main Street and it is causing sink holes on Main Street in Au Sable Forks,Ó Douglas said. Ò I grew up on Main Street and I have never seen a project done on Main Street in all the years that I have been alive. The businesses there are having serious troubles because the state has not kept up Main Street properly.Ó Politi said his concern was less about the job DOT was doing and more at the state level. Ò I have a problem when I see the state going out and buying these pieces of land and preserving them for the people, but then the people cannot get here because the roads are so bad,Ó he said.

County Manager Daniel Palmer asked why there had been such an increase in the number of bridges that had been “red flagged” over the past few years. Ò The standard has not been changed. The problem is that we have a bunch of Baby Boomer bridges that now need to be worked on,Ó Zhou responded. Ò We need to take care of about eight to 10 bridges a year to keep up with the work, and we are currently doing between two and three.Ó Zhou recommended that the supervisor come up with a list of jobs that they feel are a priority in the county and also contact their representation in higher offices of government. Ò You need to get the message out to your representatives at the state and federal level that road work is vital to the economy,Ó he said. Ò I think that it is a good idea that this board, through the highway committee, come up with a list of priorities to give to you,Ó Scozzafava said.

by IPRO, the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization and Medicaid Review Agent for New York state, recognize organizations that demonstrate a high level of commitment to improving the quality of care provided to New YorkÕ s Medicare beneficiaries and Medicaid recipients.

The 2013 IPRO Quality Award was offered in recognition of Elizabethtown Community HospitalÕ s (ECH) effort to continually improve the quality of its patient care; and for its commitment to reporting quality data to the state and federal government. The hospital exceeded reporting requirements for hospital inpatient and outpatient data. Ò This is a significant honor for the hospital,Ó said CEO Rod Boula. Ò It is a testament to the hard work and exceptional effort

by ECH staff members to improve patient care and clinical effectiveness, while ensuring that patient satisfaction always exceeds expectations.Ó ECH has instituted a number of programs that improve the patient experience and quality of care, including its “Quiet for PatientsÓ campaign, aimed at reducing noise in the facility. Ò Everyone in the building is committed to this program,Ó said Denise Plano, chief clinical and quality officer at ECH. Ò Maintenance ensures that wheels do not squeak and that doors close quietly. Nurses and nurse aides ensure that voices are kept low, especially during the evening hours. Even administrative staff is becoming more aware of the noise that their shoes make as they walk the halls.Ó The campaign also features a series of posters that showcase staff members reminding everyone about the importance of a quiet environment. Patients are given ear plugs upon arrival; and there is also a dedicated phone line that patients can use if things are too loud.

In addition, the ECH pharmacist meets with patients regularly so that pain is controlled and medication instructions are always clear. Nurses and nurse aides work as a team, assigned to particular patients so that communication is consistent. Each patient has a communication board, designed to offer information about when nurses are scheduled to return, information about when to expect physical therapy and other activities.

In addition to an improved patient experience, the award was also offered in response to the hospitalÕ s commitment to reporting its quality data.

According to Plano, while reporting data is not mandatory for a critical access hospital like ECH, it will eventually be held to that standard; and larger hospitals are already facing that change. Ò As with many things, this hospital is more advanced than others,Ó she commented. Ò While ECH is not yet mandated to report its data Ð patient surveys, readmission rates, timely and effective care Ð it does so in an effort to be prepared for the day that it becomes

mandatory.Ó According to Community Relations Director Jane Hooper, hospital reimbursement will eventually be linked with that reportable data Ð linking patient outcomes, along with patientsÕ perception of their care. Ò Eventually, critical access hospitals like ECH expect to be paid differently by Medicare, Medicaid and insurance companies,Ó she said. Ò Rather than being paid for a particular service like an overnight stay in the hospital or performing an x-ray, the hospital will be paid based on the patientÕ s outcome and the patientÕ s perception of care. Reporting the hospitalÕ s quality data gives patients and organizations like Medicare and Medicaid insight into the hospitalÕ s reputation and abilities; and patient satisfaction survey results make up a significant part of that data. Obviously, ECH hopes that patients will always be pleased with the care that they receive.Ó As the federally designated quality improvement organization for New York state, IPROÕ s activities target the quality aspects of healthcare. It supports hospitals and providers with evidencebased clinical interventions and technical assistance to improve healthcare processes and patient care.

Supervisors discuss CCE building conditions

“The building looks very bad,” Chesterfield Supervisor and DPW Committee Chairman Gerald Morrow said. Ò It is peeling.Ó Ò The biggest issue would be cleaning the old paint and then containing it,Ó DPW Director Anthony LaVigne said. Ò Because of the age of the building, there will probably be some properties in the old paint that would need to be contained.Ó Moriah Supervisor Tom Scozzafava asked if there had been any contact with CCE about the situation. Ò Cooperative Extension owns buildings and takes care of buildings in other counties, and I am sure that they can find enough money to take care of it,” Scozzafava said. Ò We do not charge them a whole lot for rent.Ó Ò We own the building, and they do a lot of work for this county,Ó Morrow responded. Ò Nothing is as simple as it seems on the surface,Ó Westport Supervisor and former CCE employee Dan Connell said. Ò Soil and Water is in that building, and they do not pay anything to be in there. Cornell pays for the lights and heat for soil and water to be there. If they own it, I am sure that they are going to turn around and charge some rent for soil and water to be there.Ó LaVigne said that a new paint job was just the surface of the work that was needed on the building, but that there could be monies available because of its place on the National Register of Historic Places. Ò There is a substantial amount of repair work that needs to be done on the building, and they are looking at a match through a historic places grant,Ó he said. Ò Cooperative Extension, Floral Hall, the grandstand and the announcers stand are on the National Registry,Ó Connell added. Ò Most of the expensive, old buildings are on the registry, and they are because if they need any work to be done there should be funds available to help with those.Ó Morrow said that the biggest key to resolving the painting issue was to make sure the peeling of the old paint could be done without worries of dealing with lead-based paints or asbestos. Ò If we have no issues with the paint that is on there, then we do not have to spend anything in painting, we can get the (Moriah) Shock workers there,Ó Morrow said.

Scozzafava also said there could be local businesses that would donate to the cause. Ò There are probably companies out there that would possibly donate the paint as well,Ó Scozzafava said.

keith@denpubs.com KEESEVILLE Ñ As the statue of a soldier watched over them, members of the Keeseville Elks Lodge No. 2072 honored the country and flag during its 55th annual Flag Day ceremony Saturday, June 15.

“We come together to celebrate the history of this flag, to honor the anniversary of its birth and the accomplishments that have been achieved under it,Ó Elks Exalted Ruler Anne King said.

The ceremony included presentations about the history of the flag, which included a number of flags from the nations past which were carried onto the site by Jack Finnegan and Jamie Manning, members of Boy Scout Troop 5 in Keeseville.

There was also a flag folding ceremony by members of the lodge as well as a remembrance of soldiers who have been taking as prisoners of war or are listed as missing in action.

Balzac earns Rane scholarship ABBEVILLE, Ala. Ñ Samuel Balzac (pictured) of Jay and graduate of Kenne Central School, said he was Ò incredibly surprisedÓ to learn that he was chosen as a recipient of a Jimmy Rane Foundation scholarship.

He says that while he realized that national scholarships were extremely competitive, he still felt a, Ò connection with the mission of the Jimmy Rane FoundationÓ and gave the application process a shot. Samuel is one of 26 students from six states to receive a Jimmy Rane Foundation scholarship this year.

New use for school

Continued from page 1 The building was closed as a school in 2001, with its youngest students at the time of the closure now preparing to graduate as members of the Class of 2013 June 21. Present at the opening of the new Willsboro Central School was then Gov. George Pataki, who was also on hand for the re-opening of the former school site. Ò I think that this is tremendous not just for Willsboro, but for Essex County and the North Country,Ó Pataki said. Ò I would be in town with Libby and we would see the building and think that there has there has got to be some kind of creative reuse and now we have it and it is something that the community can be proud of as well as Eli.Ó Schwartzberg said that representatives at all levels of government played a key role in turning his plans into reality.

“When I needed help, these officials who represent this area were there for me,Ó he said. Ò This is just a really good use of a community resource,Ó Congressman Bill Owens said. Ò It puts an asset back into the community and this is something that we need to do in lots of other communities.Ó Ò It is so exciting to see that this great school is now getting such great usage in a new life,Ó state Sen. Betty Little said. Ò The extra mile that Eli went to save the history and preserve the memories of the community is something that should be treasured and honored,Ó Sayward said. Ò He could have gutted this building and done this in a much less expensive way, but he did not.Ó Ò Just the reuse of this fantastic school building in the heart of the Willsboro community is a great thing,Ó Essex County IDA Director Carol Calabrese said. Ò It is just an honor to be a small part of this. Eli is a smart businessman, but he is also kind-hearted and this has just been a great economic development project.Ó Ò Eli has such an infectious enthusiasm and determination and it was fun to work with him on this project,Ó Housing Assistance Program of Essex County Director Alan Hipps said.

The community will be run by Eddie Holland, who will serve as the executive director. Ò Being able to open a building like this and provide a service to this region is amazing,Ó Holland said. Ò It is an absolute honor to be a part of this.Ó

WADA building tabbed for historic register inclusion

keith@denpubs.com WESTPORT Ñ The former home of the Lake View Grange and current offices for the town of Westport may soon be designated as a historic building.

Last week, the Lake View Grange No. 590, now known as the WADA building in Westport, was one of 17 recommended properties, resources and districts to be placed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places by the New York State Board for Historic Preservation.

Supervisor Dan Connell said that the application for placement on the register was made with the help of Bill Johnston, who has been working with a citizensÕ building committee on ways to upkeep the structure that was built 85 years ago. Ò The premise behind the application is to make the building eligible for some state and federal funding,Ó Connell said. Ò They will have a hearing at some point on the sites, so there is still a process that needs to happen.Ó Ò These are the historic resources that help shape the individuality and Ô quality of placeÕ of

our communities,Ó said Rose Harvey, Commissioner of the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation in a release. Ò Listing on the State and National Registers of Historic Places is a fitting honor and will help preserve these properties for the future.Ó Listing these properties on the State and National Registers can assist their owners in revitalizing the structures, making them eligible for various public preservation programs and services, such as matching state grants and state and federal historic rehabilitation tax credits.

Once the recommendations are approved by

the state historic preservation officer, the properties are listed on the New York State Register of Historic Places and then nominated to the National Register of Historic Places, where they are reviewed and, once approved, entered on the National Register.

The WADA building has a long history in the town of Westport. Erected in 1928, it has served the community as a Grange Hall, roller rink and American Legion Post until it was acquired in 1971 by the village and town of Westport to serve as municipal offices and a youth center.

A new garden area was planted at the Westport Heritage House by volunteers Donna Barber and Kathy Taylor in time for the Open House on June 19.

Med Quest Camp coming to ECH

ELIZABETHTOWN Ñ Hudson Mohawk Area Health Education Center (HM AHEC) is having a Med Quest Camp on June 27 and 28 at Elizabethtown Community Hospital in Elizabethtown. This two-day camp is for high school students interested in the field of health care.

Med Quest offers hands-on activities in various departments throughout the hospital to introduce students to a variety of health career opportunities. Sample activities include mock casting, CPR training, and intubation simulation. An excellent addition to a resume or college application; Med Quest Camp is free for students to attend.

Library to host walk/run

WILLSBORO Ñ The Paine Memorial Library is sponsoring the Paine Free Walk/Run on Saturday, June 29, at the Point Road Soccer field in Willsboro. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. with a 10 a.m. start. Walkers and runners will be able to choose their distance. Children will be encouraged to use the track while others may walk or run on River Road. Westport Central School students visited residents at the Interlakes Health Center in Ticonderoga with their furry companions on June 9. Handlers in fifth grade, Maggie Ploufe and Annette Stephens, went with fourth graders Kassidy Brack and Ella King. The students made the day of one resident, Helen Poole, a former State Trooper based in Schroon Lake. Poole said she loved being able to see the dogs because it reminded her of her beloved chow chow that is being taken care of by friends in Rhode Island while she has been at Interlakes. “I had some wonderful visitors today, it was really special,” Poole said. Missing from the group were fourth graders Tomasi Vaiciulis and Brennan Mazzotte, and fifth graders McKenzie Stephens and Carter Story. The students have been working with WCS teacher Shoshi Satloff for a year on training to be handlers for the dogs. Recently the group also visited Meadowbrook Health Care in Plattsburgh, Horace Nye Nursing Home in Elizabethtown and Keene Neighborhood House in Keene.

Turtles, turtles everywhere

I

t has been a very wet and truly wild week in the woods, but in between the raindrops there was a lot of fun to be had, and the wildlife has been abundant. Black flies have been brutal, while dragonflies have been busy and turtles have been everywhere, depositing their eggs on sandy shorelines.

For interested parties who may have missed the notice, the Adirondack Park Agency has also been busy hosting meetings to determine land classifications for several parcels of wild lands recently acquired from The Nature Conservancy.

Among the parcels is a vast tract of land near Newcomb that was the longtime home of The Gooley Club, a sportsman’s club of the first order.

There is also a newly purchased tract that holds great promise for providing a safe takeout for paddlers, anglers and others who wish to journey on a comfortable flat water float trip along the remote upper sections of the Hudson River.

There is a possibility the tract will be classified appropriately to allow motorized access to a Ô take out Ô siteÕ so that paddlers can exit the river just above the wild Hudson River Gorge.

The potential of access to and from the Hudson stillwater may provide a vital increase in usage which would bring more visitors to the small town of Newcomb.

The Hudson River stillwater take out is necessary for casual paddlers who donÕ t car to tackle the heavy waters of the raging Hudson River Gorge.

The Agency has issued a Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement on the proposed classification of State lands in Essex and Hamilton Counties. The Agency has proposed seven classification alternatives for these lands. Public comment is invited until July 19, 2013.

The APA has already hosted hearings at their offices in Ray Brook, as well as in Newcomb, Indian Lake and New York City.

The hearings have been well attended, especially with representatives from the various environmental advocacy groups.

However, there has been a noticeable lack of support and input from the sporting community.

I recently spoke with Jason Kemper, Chairman of the NYS Conservation Fund Advisory board who has been attending the APA hearings. Sadly, he has been one of the very few voices advocating for the sporting community.

Kemper wants to get the word out that members of the sporting community need to be represented at the hearing to ensure the new land classifications are able provide and support access for all user groups and remain open and available for hunting and fishing.

If the classification of the new lands eventually do not favor access for sportsmen, snowmobilers lands and other traditional users, the responsibility will be directly on the lack of support and advocacy from these user. The initial APA Hearing in Ray Brook attracted only three representatives from sportsmanÕ s groups. In order to protect the traditional uses, the sporting community must make their voices heard!

What to do?

A recent study conducted for the Essex County Visitors Center reveals visitors to the Adirondack region are primarily outdoor oriented and prefer hotel accommodations to other types, and spent $82 for every occupancy tax dollar spent on marketing in 2012.

These results should come as no great surprise, really. I Ô ve yet to meet a visitor who has traveled to Essex County to attend an opera!

The vast majority of our visitors come for the natural attractions, and as parents, we must do more to ensure our children learn to appreciate this fact. We must also make sure our local youth have appropriate opportunities to enjoy the local surroundings.

Adirondackers have always raised their children with a solid connection to the environment. It has helped to shape their character and foster an understanding of natural processes. It is a vital component of our regions culture and huge part of the North Country Ô s heritage.

The Adirondack Interpretive Center has been making this initiative their mission for several years. The staff has been providing a wide range of outdoor skill education programs, and they plan to continue it next weekend with a series on Fly Fishing hosted by Adirondack guide Rick Kovacs.

Kovacs is an accomplished flyfisherman, who operates Packbasket Adventures in the sprawling northern metropolis of Wanakena, which is located up Cranberry way.

Rick travels annually to the AIC in Newcomb to present programs on flyfishing, and to visit a community of comparable size to his own.

The program is designed for beginners and intermediate level flyfishing enthusiasts. Topics will include: Insects important to fly fishing, fly fishing in the Adirondacks, correction of fly casting mistakes for intermediates, gear selection and fly lines, basic fly casting for beginners, and fly tying.

Weather permitting, participants will have the chance to practice their skills on the water. Fly fishing rods are available to rent for a $25 fee. Advance registration is required, $25 per person per session, call 518-582-2000 or email aic@esf.edu. Bring your lunch to each workshop.

The workshop provides a great opportunity for local residents, as well as visitors to learn the ins and outs of flyfishing just in time to enjoy New York’s Free Fishing Days next weekend on June 29-30.

ore than 25 years ago I was involved in the effort to promote grazing management. During the early years, grassland management for feeding beef or dairy cows was not promoted by the agricultural universities, or most of the conservation agencies at the federal, state or local levels.

Universities utilized grant money from chemical and fertilizer companies to do studies, so they towed the company mantra of bigger is better, get big or get out, keep the cows in the barn, and use our latest new and improved product to improve your bottom line, which was really the salesmanÕ s and the companyÕ s bottom line. The times havenÕ t changed for many products!

The times have changed for pasture though. Here it is, 25 years later and grazing management has been accepted by many farmers to improve their bottom line. Grazing grass reduces manure handling costs and energy costs, improves soil health and herd health by getting the cows out of the barn and on grass pastures where nature intended them to be in the first place.

I recently attended two grazing meetings, one in Essex County, NY and the other in Wells, Vermont. At both meetings, grassland production was based on quality soils and the benefit of having abundant organic matter to supply nutrients and energy to growing plants.

Grazing consultants, including myself, have a variety of options on how to graze.

For reseeding and establishing clover, there are times when nubbing the grass down to the dirt and drilling or spreading clover or perennial ryegrass seed works. Letting the cows push the seed and organic matter into the soil with their hoofs gets the job done.

Drilling into sod works also, BUT, it must be done when the grasses are nubbed down, and there is plenty of moisture to allow the young plants to get established. If the grasses get too high, they will shade out the clovers that are trying to grow.

Traditional grass management is to graze when the grass was about 9 inches high and down to 4 or 5 inches to get the fresh growing high protein feed. Basically it was a take half, leave half approach. This allowed the high protein grasses to be grazed, and enough leaf left for photosynthesis.

High grass grazing is now being looked at as another option. High grass grazing is letting the grass get even higher, to maybe 20 inches and just taking the top third of the plant. The actual height will depend on the species of plant growing. REGROWTH TIME is critical to allow the leaves to grow as high as possible without the plant going to seed head stage, and to allow the roots to grow deeper and build organic matter. By grazing the top 1.3 of the plant, the cow gets the Ò creamÓ off the top. The remaining plant is left or trampled until the next time the cows rotate through the paddock. The benefits are that some organic matter is pushed into the ground by the cows hooves slowly building up the soil, the leaves that are left are longer so the plant grows faster due to increase photosynthesis of the plant leaf and the cows get the high energy or cream off the top of the plant for their use. The long grass residue left protects the soil from drying out and keeps the soil microbes happy so they do their thing breaking down organic matter and releasing nutrients to the grass plants.

For beef operations, I feel the high grass grazing approach is fine, but I am not sold 100 percent yet on how dairy cow milk production would be on higher grazed grasses. The farmer would have to do a comparison and see what happens in the bulk tank to know the truth. That would be an easy test to perform on the farm.

Another added benefit that is a marketing plus for grassland agriculture in general is that organic matter stores carbon. By building up your soils, you are storing carbon instead of releasing it into the atmosphere. It was said that if agriculture went with more perennial species like grass there would be a great reduction in atmospheric carbon.

It will be the farmers who will save the world, not the politicians!

Agriculture is booming in our area. Grass fed beef is making great strides lately as a better and healthier food for the consumer. The growth of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) operations, grass fed beef and vegetable operations; many driven by some of todayÕ s younger generation are pushing the envelope on new and different products for the consumer. High tunnels, irrigation and specialty crops are growing throughout the nation.

There are about 14 of us grazing people out there that are involved in a Holistic Grazing Management program where we are constantly learning about grassland management for wildlife, beef and dairy cow grazing, organic matter buildup and carbon sequestration.

ItÕ s all about the ecology of grasslands and cattle. You must learn to look at the whole thing and understand how it works; not just looking at a piece of the ecology pie! I will try to keep you all informed as we all learn.

We all must keep learning until the day we die. We will probably learn something then, when we step across that threshold! But I am in no hurry!

CLINTONVILLE Ñ The 2013 AuSable Valley Fun Runs have been scheduled as a six night series of races for all ages and ability levels sponsored by the Au Sable Forks and Keeseville Youth Commissions. All are welcome.

Distances are a quarter-mile (suggested for ages 3-5), half-mile (ages 6-8), one mile and 3.1 miles. Races will be held Monday nights starting July 8, and ending Aug. 12. Races start at 6 p.m., and registration begins at 5:30 p.m.

Cogburn wins Wilmington Whiteface 100K WILMIGNTON Ñ Cameron Cogburn (Ashville, N.C.) has vacationed in the Adirondack region and heÕ s even won two road cycling races up Whiteface Mountain, but this was the first time he tried mountain biking.

The MIT grad student looked just as comfortable on a mountain bike as he does on a road cycle when he raced away to a first place finish during SundayÕ s, June 16, third annual Wilmington Whiteface 100K (WW100).

Cogburn and 10 other cyclists spent most of the first half of the race together, before he broke away and completed the 69-mile event and Leadville 100 MTB qualifier (LT100) in four hours, six minutes, 21.20 seconds. ÒT he course played to my strengths, I got away from the field at about the half-way point, coming through the Ô feed zone.Õ Ó said Cogburn. ÒA ll the guys stopped, I didnÕ t have a drop, so I had all of my stuff and I just kept going. I killed it up the hill and tried to hold it from there.Ó Since so many hills make up the course, the WW100 is regarded as one of the toughest Leadville Series quali-

fying events. Beginning and ending at Whiteface Mountain, cyclists endure jeep and gravel roads and back country trails through Wilmington, Jay, Keene, Lewis and Elizabethtown, as well as climbs that measure more than 750 meters each. All of this before two, three-mile finishing loops and a pair of 350 foot climbs at Whiteface, ahead of the finish line.

Being from Ashville, Cogburn felt right at home on the WW100 hills. ÒI just tried to get away on the big hill coming back,Ó he noted. ÒI lost some time on the single-track sections, so I didnÕ t want to leave it until the very end. I knew that the final hill at Whiteface was steep, but it wasnÕ t long, and I knew that I wanted to build a couple of minutes coming in.

So when I came out of the second to last single-track section, I was told I had eight minutes, I knew that I was in good position.Ó Gered Dunne (White River Junction, Vt.) tried to keep up with Cogburn for the first 30-plus miles, but gave up the chase and finished second in 4:11:14.22. ÒI tÕ s a Ô roadieÕ kind of race, but

there are some really nice single-track sections to spread it out,Ó Dunne remarked. ÒT he downhills are fast and they really make you focus, itÕ s still a mountain bike race in the end, this is great.Ó Dereck Treadwell (Topsham, Maine) rounded out the top three cyclists in the men’s field. Treadwell finished in 4:11:40.96 Six-time LT100 champion David Wiens (Gunnison, Colo.) was also in the lead pack, but he couldnÕ t keep up with the pace set by Cogburn and finished fourth. ÒW ith that group, I got dropped on the steep pavement on the Jay Mountain Road,Ó added the mud covered Wiens, whose finish time was 4:12:43.97. ÒO n all the climbs I could barely hang on and it was Cameron and Billy Demong who were pushing really hard. Then when Cameron went off by himself, nobody wanted any part of that I donÕ t think.Ó Demong (Vermontville) crossed the finish line in eighth place. The 2010 Olympic Nordic combined gold and silver medalist finished in 4:23:51.22.

erly, Mass.) lost to Rebecca Rusch (Ketchum, Id.) by 19 minutes. Sunday, she beat the four-time womenÕ s Leadville champion by almost eight minutes. ÒC rystal and I have been racing together for two years now. She had a good race and I had an okay race,Ó added Rusch, who finished in a time of 4:49:50.46. Anthony was clocked in 4:42:00.71. ÒI Õ m so happy when this women’s field gets stronger, stronger and stronger, itÕ s good for everybody.

Rhonda Stickle (Barrie, Ontario) was the womenÕ s third place racer.

She crossed the finish line at the base of the Olympic mountain in 5:00:50.73.

One-hundred of SundayÕ s athletes are now making plans to race in the Aug. 10 LT100. Fifty of the LT100 qualifying spots were awarded based on performance in each division for men and women, and the other 50 were distributed randomly from a pool of all racers, who finished under the maximum cutoff time, which was eight hours.

Wilderness first aid class set
