Holiday Spirit in full effect

Employees at Denton Publications, along with many other businesses and organizations, have done just that over the past month, giving donations of clothing, food, toys and presents to a number of local community organizations.

At Denton’s, the third annual Project Boxed Smile collected toys for distribution by Families First.

“We do a toy drive every year, and this year we have over 150 children that we are looking to get gifts for, so this really helps out tremendously,” said Families First executive director JoAnne Caswell. “The need is growing every year, and local businesses and citizens have really stepped up. The people and groups that we reach out to every year continue to be very

generous.”

“If it were not for the employees here and their giving, this would not be possible,” said Shelley Parker, a Denton employee who has organized the companies drive for the past three years. “Everyone has been part of this effort.”

Caswell said that donations will be put to good use.

“We have a list that we collect throughout the year of people in need and then we are able to put together the age of the child and the clothing and shoe size,” said Caswell. “We make sure that everyone gets something.”

Mountain Valley shuttle free for season ELIZABETHTOWN— Those who use the Mountain Valley Shuttle will be able to do so for free from now until March 20.

The shuttle, which is provided through a collaborative effort between Essex County Transportation and the Olympic Regional Development Authority, the town of Jay, the town of North Elba, the town of Wilmington, the Regional Offices of Sustainable Tourism and the village of Lake Placid, provides service between Lake Placid, Jay, Wilmington and Au Sable Forks.

The town of Jay and the town of Black Brook have joined together with M & M Diner to help provide food and toys for families at Christmastime.

“It really has been a collective effort,” said Jay supervisor Randy Douglas. “M & M Diner has been great with their support from owner Jay McDonald and staff like Cindy Murphy, who has really worked to bring everything together.

Douglas said he was also impressed with the residents of the area, who have stepped up to meet an increasing need.

“A lot of the residents get involved each year,” Douglas said. “They all have truly been amazing. A lot of them realize that the need is greater and it has been a great outpouring of help and support.”

“We used to buy gifts for each other at the christmas party,” McDonald said. “Cindi came up with the idea of buying gifts for the toy drive. It just kind of expanded in the last couple of years. Now, it’s a matter of whatever we can do to help out the needy.”

Douglas said the two towns and the diner collected donations throughout the month, which they then used to purchase food and toys for needy families in the area.

“Because of this effort, families are now going to have a decent meal on the table and kids will have toys under the tree,” Douglas said. “We did all of the shopping over the weekend and spent the day on Dec. 21 wrapping and preparing the baskets.”

However, Douglas said those who organized and helped with the drive will also get something in return.

“You know, we really do this every year because it gives you that good feeling,” he said.

Elementary students do their part to help animals

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PERU — It’s the season of giving and the message is one understood loud and clear at Ausable Forks Elementary.

First-grade students there, helped by teachers and parent volunteers, loaded up two school buses with donations for the Elmore SPCA animal shelter this week, dropping them off Dec. 20.

“This is our 10th year of donating to Elmore,” said teacher Shyloah Osteyee. “We love it because it really teaches them they can make a difference and they can see where their donations are going and how all their hard work comes to fruition.”

Donations are collected and brought in by the students starting before Thanksgiving recess, Osteyee explained, with kids gathering items like pet food, leashes, and blankets.

“Our teachers and moms and dads from the whole community come in to help us out,” said Osteyee. “The whole community has been very, very generous over the years. I think it’s important for the kids to see that their families can be involved and really change the way things are in their own communities, even if it’s something as simple as donating dog biscuits.”

And, the kids are getting the message, said

Osteyee.

First-grader Kolby Furnia, who has a dog of his own, explained what he was doing at Elmore SPCA that day.

“We brought stuff into the animal shelter,” said Furnia. “Cat food, leashes, dog toys — cause the dogs can play with them.”

Furnia added he also “feels good” to donate items to the shelter and enjoyed watching the animals “run around.”

Classmate Jenna Stanley said she enjoyed “bringing the treats to the animals” and other items so “they can have good stuff for their homes and stuff to eat.”

Kc Mace, member of the Elmore SPCA board of directors, said she was overwhelmed by the donations collected this year.

“This is a tremendous benefit for us because the more donations we receive the less we have to spend out of monies that we have for our operating budget,” said Mace.

Having young students make the contri-butions means even more, she added.

“We have kids who, rather than have a birthday with presents or parties, donate all that to the shelter in the way of food and things like that,” said Mace. “It just warms my heart to see there are kids out there who really care about these animals. A lot of adults could really take a lesson from these kids.”

ran into Molly Rascoe at school last week and was happy to see her looking fit as a fiddle. The more time goes by, the better the chances are that her body won't reject the new kidney she just received from donor Ben Sudduth, who I also saw at school and who's doing well, too. (If you've been hibernating and don't know what I'm talking about, check this space two weeks ago.)

As you probably also know, Molly's is only one of several transplant success stories to bless the North Country this holiday season. Two other young people in the region have also come through some tough times with flying colors: high-school junior Brock Marvin of E'town, and 22-month-old Camden Maneely of Malone. Both received recent heart transplants within a day of each other in Boston, where they shared a hospital room.

What you probably don't know is that Molly, Brock, and Camden have something in common besides successful transplants.

They and their families all received support from an organization right here in Westport,

the Christopher Emmet Hallowell Fund. Its mission is to help the families of North Country children who face a medical crisis by providing assistance with incidental expenses such as travel and lodging—things that insurance might not cover but which can really add up over time.

Christopher was a Westport resident who suffered from childhood leukhemia and eventually was one of the first recipients of a double heart-lung transplant. He passed away on December 12, 2002, and shortly afterward his family and friends established the fund in his memory. (Disclosure: I was lucky enough to be one of Christopher's many friends, and I currently serve on the board of the Fund.) Recently I spoke to his mom, Daphne Hallowell, who is the fund's guiding spirit. "I think it's wonderful that we could be part of these inspiring stories," she said. "It has really brightened things up at this time of year." How inspiring to transform an anniversary of grief into an affirmation of life and love—and what a totally appropriate way to remember a remarkable person.

he true season of Christmas if fast winding to a climax, by the time you read this it will all be over; so here is wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and hopeful that you had a wonderful time. Our community is looking quite festive and we have had a goodly number of special events to assist us all to have a great time of celebrating. We now have that Christmas card picture with everything outside covered in white snow, it is beautiful. I have noticed many college students home for the holiday and many have a long January break, we wish you all continued success in the years of study ahead.

Many of you may remember Todd Wadsworth, he used to have a florist shop here in Willsboro. He wrote me this year that his mother Mary that many of us also knew had passed away in February and also he lost his beloved Grandmother in October. He seems to be doing well, but truly has a heavy heart with the loss of dear ones.

Several were able to take advantage of the Adirondack Farmer ’s Market this summer as it was located here in Willsboro. The group really appreciated the great town site for their location and this was there 20th anniversary year of making their products available to the many communities in the North Country. To show their appreciation to our community they presented a gift of $500 at the last Town Board meeting to be used at the town’s discretion. The school booster club had a Christmas Raffle and they had many prizes donated by local businesses, so there were several winners. The profit goes to assist the school awards programs, graduation scholarships as well as some sports equipment. They appreciated all that assisted them in this event.

I always mention in this column anything given to me, whether it’s a talk at the library, an academic success, or some other notable town event. However, if I don’t get any news items, I can’t write about them, so please don’t be bashful.

This week I’m back in Alabama, trying to remember it’s December, even though it feels a lot like early autumn. There are trees turning color, including a widely planted ornamental pear that is a radiant scarlet right now. The smell of freshly mowed grass is in the air and football, a passionately beloved sport around here, dominates conversations. There are also reminders of Christmas, although it just seems wrong to put lights on palm trees. A lot of inflated snowmen are around town, but most people here have no experience with snow and prefer to keep it that way.

I had a little fun with snow on my drive here, in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.

The first flakes made the traffic slow down, and then sleet and freezing rain really messed up things. The bad roads didn’t bother me as much as the overly confident local drivers, many of whom wound up in the ditch.

Later this week, my mother and I are driving to Texas have Christmas with my children. Amy is already there, but not Ginny.

As you may recall, Amy is my wife and Ginny is our dog. Ginny is spending her holidays in Reber with neighbors, who adore and pamper her. In fact, the level of dog spoiling is at the shameless level. Ginny has a plush carpet by the woodstove, a place on the sofa for watching TV, and a spot on the bed at night. In exchange, Ginny chases squirrels away from the bird feeders and takes care of any food that might drop on the floor.

ne week left to the entire year; sounds so cliché but where does the time go? I want to thank everyone who has been so kind to drop me an email concerning my column or stopping me during my travels to comment on my work. I truly appreciate it and am having a lot of fun doing this.

I seem to have struck a very positive chord with my desire from the bridges to research into the history of our community. As a teacher, my school year is packed and busy, but I am very free during the summer to pursue my writing. By all means please contact me with any stories, tidbits or contacts for me to follow up on this venture. I would like to collect up all the information this winter and spring and start assembling pieces during the summer.

So for the first time in seven years Christmas falls on a Saturday which affects a lot of business as well as churches. Most if not all

of the churches are not going to have anticipated Masses this Saturday. So for those being technical about things, the faithful need to go to Church twice this weekend – once for the Christmas Mass and then once on Sunday only this week for the regular weekly Mass. The history nut in me is going off again. I wonder exactly when the concept of anticipated Masses started? Growing up I was brought up that Sunday was the day for Church and the idea of going the afternoon before was very alien to me. I believe that the practice has been within the last fifty or so years which brings to mind Vatican II. Another thing for me to spend some time researching! Make sure to check online or call ahead as this is the week when schedules might be different from the norm.

In any case I wish everyone a blessed Holiday regardless of faith practice and a wish that we all bring more peace to this planet that we call our home. Stay safe and happy!

Bear is a laid-back fellow who doesn't get excited too easily and prefers to watch any activity going on rather than getting too involved. He doesn't mind an occasional trip outside; his thick coat keeps him toasty warm in the snow. This sweet fellow is hoping to find someone who will give him the affection he craves and provide him with a comfortable place to relax and watch the hustle-and-bustle of the world pass by.

If there is a dog or cat of a particular age, temperament, size, or breed you are seeking, please feel free to stop by the shelter and find out if your perfect pet may be waiting for you. We always have new animals coming in seeking homes; many of our dogs do not have a pedigree, but have many of the characteristics of their purebred relatives.

The kind workers come through with a meal and a pat, with so many to care for, they can't stay to chat, They move to the next kennel, giving each of us cheer... we know that they wonder how long we'll be here.

We lay down to sleep and sweet dreams fill our heads.. of a home filled with love and our own cozy beds.

Then we wake to see sad eyes, brimming with tears - our friends filled with emptiness, worry, and fear.

If you can't adopt us and there's no room at the Inn - could you help with the bills and fill our food bin?

We count on your kindness each day of the year - can you give more than hope to everyone here?

To the Valley News: Asphalt or slate? The opening question as to the fate of the Willsboro Historical Center in your Dec. 18 issue a tough one on some fronts.

Were I a Willsboro taxpayer, it would be hands down in favor of slate and this is why: when cost is considered, one must take into account the life expectancy of both applications and over the long term replacement and maintenance costs. On that front, I am not so sure that slate is not less expensive.

On the other hand consideration must be given the issue brought up, Historical Preservation. On that issue, just exactly what would we want to pass on to posterity? I can almost hear it now, 20-25 years from now people trying to understand just why slate was not applied as they replace the asphalt roof and they note that slate would have cost just $73,000.; what an affront to the original architecture (that asphalt).

At some point, whether Willsboro or Westport or any other town for that matter, we need to consider long term and quality.

These buildings were well built by craftsman, masters in their trades, thoughtfully designed by architects, decisions made then by people aware of value. When do we begin to make decisions that 100 years from now, someone will say the same of us?

And please, believe me, there is great work being done, the kind of reaching out and helping that means the end-of-life experience is much more positive for individuals and families.

As strange as it may sound, unless you have benefited from Hospice services, our involvement does make a huge difference.

There are the practical, tangible things done by the clinical staff. However there is also much more.

At a time in our society when it has become easy to be distant and isolated from others, Hospice of the North Country reaches out and touches. We listen, we reassure, we ask the kind of questions that open up dialogue and facilitate communication. Often we open the spigot for discussions that almost miraculously begin flowing between our patient and their families and that is truly wonderful.

Hospice of the North Country is a valuable resource in the North Country. Demand for our services continues to grow each year.

We are quite proud of our new facility on Tom Miller Road in Plattsburgh that is helping us do an even better job of fulfilling our mission. We are also extremely appreciative of all who helped to make this wonderful, well-designed facility become a reality.

Tobacco stats alarming

youth (0-17) are projected to die prematurely from smoking. Smoking kills more people than alcohol, AIDS, car crashes, illegal drugs, murders, and suicides combined.

During the ten years the NYS Tobacco Control Program (TCP) has been operating, adult smokers have been reduced by 500,000 and youth smokers by 75,000. Our work is not done. Over 18 percent of adults smoke and almost 15 percent of high school students smoke.

More than eight billion dollars are spent each year in health care costs directly related to smoking and over six billion dollars spent in smoking related productivity losses.

The Tobacco Control Programs in your community are working diligently to decrease youth exposure to tobacco marketing in retail environments; provide help to quit smoking; increase the number of tobacco free outdoor areas, including parks, recreation areas, and worksites; and to create tobacco free college campuses. The tobacco companies spend billions of dollars each year to entice our children to smoke and to keep current smokers smoking. NYS needs to continue to invest in the work of the Tobacco Control Programs to provide tobacco free environments, eliminate tobacco marketing to children, eliminate exposure to second hand smoke, and to motivate adult smokers to quit.

hristmas memories may be among our most treasured and lasting memories. I remember my mother, telling me that at Christmas, she and her siblings would get one orange in their stocking and that it was a real treat because they could not have oranges all year round.

She said she could still remember how juicy and wonderful those oranges tasted. She said that she and her siblings would take great care to peel and eat the orange over a plate so that every drop of juice could be enjoyed. This is such an extraordinary story because I doubt that there are many folks around today that could get so much enjoyment from a single orange. In that time, getting an orange to the Eastern Townships of Quebec would have been an extravagance, however, a mere pittance when compared to today’s Christmas costs.

Christmas gifts are no longer ten to thirty dollars, but rather they are hundreds of dollars. A Play station game costs $483, Xbox Elite sells for $580 and games range in price from $24.99 to $46.54. An IPhone costs between $200 and $300 dollars depending on which version you choose. That doesn’t include the yearly cost of phone service. It is not difficult to see how the cost of Christmas could be very high for parents with children.

While Christmas is still a very special time of year, the character of this holiday has definitely changed since I was a kid. To some extent, it appears that children today get big gifts

all year round and the excitement of Christmas has diminished as a result.

When I was growing up, you would begin lobbying your parents for what you wanted several

Maybe your parents would get you a BB gun, a new bicycle or a radio. We knew we couldn’t ask our parents for gifts that would cost hundreds of dollars, they didn’t have that kind of money and even if they did they would have said no. Actually, my Dad would have laughed pretty hard if I suggested that he spend four or five hundred dollars on me at Christmas.

While the holidays are a time for celebration, for some families it will be a holiday that is never forgotten because of a tragedy. Alcohol sales of all type increase dramatically during the holiday season. Over 50-percent of all deadly automobile crashes that take place during the holiday season involve alcohol. Youth alcohol poisoning also increases during the holidays.

As alcohol use increases during the holidays, so do the rates of child abuse, domestic violence and all manner of crime. Many, if not all these events affect young people. I wonder if there could be a connection between the stress of the holidays and the increase in alcohol use.

That old Santa is not expensive but is a repository for many important Christmas memories.

While the holidays are an occasion to celebrate, they are also a reason to be safe. Do your best to keep yourself and those around you safe this holiday season. Be there at Christmas next year to share in your family traditions and to tell your family stories.

Being there next year to celebrate Christmas with your friends and family might be the greatest gift of all. Have a Happy Holiday. Remember, all kids count.

Election chairs could see pay drop

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — A $25 stipend per election event for election site chairpersons could be changed in order to help save money at the county level.

Essex County Board of Elections commissioners Derinda Sherman (R) and Robert PelldeChame (D) said the idea to remove the stipend and pay chairpersons $1 per hour more than other election inspectors was thought of as a way to help keep costs down.

“We are looking at other ways that we feel we can help by cutting expenses,” Sherman said. “There are other ways that we have helped save the county money, and after the election we wanted to look at the system and see where we could save more money.”

Sherman and Pell-deChame said one reason behind the cost-cutting was the pending loss of federal funding from the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) of 2002.

“We were able to purchase machines and training with HAVA funds, and it has helped to pay for some other things with the new machines,” said Sherman. “In 2011, this money will have to all come out of the county.”

“This is an effort to get ahead of what happens when the HAVA funding goes away,” Pell-deChame said. “We do not want people to say that we haven’t been looking for places to save when we have been all along.”

Douglas and County Manager Dan Palmer have repeatedly tried to get the county Civil Service Employees Association back to the negotiating table without success.

Douglas said he has no plans of immediately following in Sullivan County’s footsteps.

“I can’t foresee me doing that in the immediate future,” he said. “But it is a possibility.

Everything is a possibility. We’re talking $700,000 in raises this year.”

The 4 percent union pay hikes will cost Essex County $700,000 in each of the next two years.

Lawsuits are expected in the counties that do decide to freeze pay in the face of existing contracts.

“I would say we leave all options open,” he said. “I would hope that the union would come back to us and negotiate in good faith. Look,

“The sites are in business for 10 hours for a primary and 16 hours for the general election,” said Sherman. “With the stipend, we were paying an additional $2,100 a year total. With the new system, we will be paying an additional $1,092, which is a savings.”

Both Sherman and Pell-deChame said they wanted to stress that chairs were not receiving $25-per hour for their time, but a stipend for $25 per election event.

Sherman added they are also looking to save money by consolidating training classes from one class to two and paying inspectors $40 for the one event rather than $30 for each.

“These are all costs that fall back on the county once the HAVA money is gone,” PelldeChame said.

Pell-deChame added the cuts were proposed as a way to also bring the county closer to state averages.

“It has been important to us to try and bring our costs down and closer to the state averages,” he said.

“These are rates that we inherited when we got here,” said Sherman. “In all but one town, these rates are more than what the inspectors were getting when the elections were under the control of the towns.”

Sherman said the only way the rates can be changed for inspectors is by a resolution passed by the board of supervisors, and that they hope to bring the matter before the board in the near future.

On the campaign trail, Governor-elect Andrew Cuomo called for legislative action to legalize pay freezes for the state’s 200,000 employees.

Cuomo’s primary talking point has been a 4 percent cap on property tax increases for governments statewide. The proposal has raised criticism from local governments that argue the plan is only workable if the state also pulls back on programs counties are mandated to provide.

County officials argue that mandated programs regularly comprise up to 90 percent of the local tax levy and leave little wiggle room for cost cutting measures.

In response, officials said Cuomo’s staff is considering pushing legislation to legalize pay freezes for all unionized taxpayer-funded employees, including teachers and civil service employees.

Essex seeks new councilman after judicial changes

The town of Essex is seeking a new member of the town council as one will be headed to the bench.

Stephen Sayward is set to become the next town justice after resigning from his position on the town council following the resignation of Mark Kupperman, who is moving out of the area.

The town is currently accepting letters of interest from anyone looking to fill Sayward’s council position, which will run through the end of 2011. The town plans to fill the vacancy as part of it’s end of the year meeting Dec. 30, at 3 p.m. in the town offices.

Westport seeks to solve sewer infiltration; honors local resident

keith@denpubs.com WESTPORT — The town of Westport has been getting a little extra when it comes to wastewater intake, which is not a good thing.

At its Tuesday, Dec. 14, regular board meeting, the Westport town board heard about ways to help correct the problem from Steve Grimm with New York Rural Water.

“We have done a lot of smoke testing and television work throughout the town,” Grimm said, who has been working with the town on the matter through a federallyfunded program. “There are concerns with inflow and infiltration of outside water into the wastewater lines.”

The excess water in the lines leads to an increase in water that is being treated at the plant, bringing levels above those approved by the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

Grimm said he is currently working with the town on a plan to correct the problem.

“What I want to do is take a look at everything and come up with a corrective action program that will give you the best bang for your buck,” Grimm said. “One thing I want to do is put together a full manhole inspection program that will allow us to go around and find out which manholes need to be replaced right now and which ones can wait.”

“With the places I have looked at right now, I think a few spot repairs would be the best bang for your buck,” Grimm said.

“There will be other areas as we go on that may very well have the need for line replacement.”

Westport supervisor Dan Connell said Grimm’s work would be used to help devel-

op a plan between the town and the DEC. “We have an agreement worked out with the DEC that we do not need a stamped plan as we are working through this,” Connell said. “They told us that what they really want to see was a multi-year plan and we would be able to use (Grimm’s) plan as a basis for the plan we submit to the DEC.” Grimm said in the new year, he wanted to make sure the entire wastewater system was

• The town board recognized Ben Sudduth for contributions to the community, particularly his service on the Westport Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Squad and donating a kidney to Molly Rascoe.

• The board transferred $1,853.14 in grant revenue in the youth commission budget to pay for new materials. However, the town did not approve a measure that would have also transferred unused salary wages to allow for additional purchases, siting that it would set a bad precedent with other departments.

Voting opinion puts Westport CS on stand

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com WESTPORT — The Westport School District may be forced to spend between $5,000-$8,000 to defend a position it took in November that said a local homeowner whose primary residence is outside the district cannot vote on the local budget.

The opinion, given at the November Westport School Board meeting, is being challenged to the state Commissioner of Education.

At the Dec. 16 meeting of the school board, school superintendent Dr. John Gallagher told members of the board that the school had been asked to come before the Commissioner of Education after three petitioners challenged the opinion that a person can only vote where they declare their primary residence.

Dr. Gallagher said the issue was first brought to the board’s attention when they received three letters concerning the matter.

“These three parties were clear that this was not their primary residence,” he said in reference to letters received from James Starbuck, James and Ann Ryan, and George and Mary Francis Toomey.

“We got three letters from the people that have petitioned, asking to vote,” said Dr. Gallagher. “We had our lawyer come to a public session in November and explain the law in

response to those letters. Following the meeting, we conveyed the legal opinion and the law back to those three parties. Following that, they petitioned to the commissioner of education.”

Members of the board said they were concerned over the amount of money that it would cost to defend their side.

“The petitions are going to deplete our excess that was around $10,000,” said board member Sue Russell.

“This was last sent before the commissioner in 2008 and ruled on in the way that we sided on,” said board member Dwayne Stevens. “My fear is even after this, different people will keep filing petitions and it could cost us a small fortune to keep going before the commissioner, and that they don’t care what this is going to cost the budget. They’re nickel and diming us.”

“I think that the people care about this, I just don’t think they realize what they are doing to our budget by going about it in this way, which actually hurts us,” said Russell.

Board member Tom Kohler asked why the school had to pay for the legal fees associated with the petition if it was going to the state commissioner.

“The petitions were filed specifically against us and our opinion,” Dr. Gallagher said.

The school has until Dec. 27 to reply to the petitions, which will be followed by a hearing.

Pregnant suspect released until hearing ELIZABETHTOWN — A suspect in the case that prompted the first Amber Alert in the region has been released from jail while she awaits a hearing on the charges.

Maria Trombley, who is eight months pregnant with her second child, was released on her own recognizance Dec. 17 after her hearing to determine whether or not the charges pending against her would be dropped was moved to Feb. 24.

Trombley was indicted on five charges, including kidnapping, for allegedly taking her then five-month-old daughter from a foster home.

Trombley’s boyfriend James Drake has also been charged in the case.

RSVP honors several officials LAKE PLACID — The third in a series of Retired Senior Volunteer Program local recognitions was held Dec. 8, at the Lake Placid Summit Resort.

The Lake Placid Summit Resort donated the use of its banquet room for the event.

Cindy Albanesi of the Lake Placid Nutrition Site hosted the luncheon. In attendance were volunteers and staff from area stations. Assisting were the Essex County Nutrition Site, Office of the Aging, the Ticonderoga Nutrition Site manager, and RSVP staff and Advisory Group.

Presenting certificates of appreciation to area stations were Essex County Board of Supervisors Chairman Randy Douglas, town of North Elba Supervisor Robi Politi, and village of Lake Placid Mayor Craig Randall. The new RSVP pins were given to all attendees.

“The RSVP staff would like to thank all of our dedicated volunteers and everyone who made this regional event a success,” said RSVP program and volunteer coordinator Barbara Brassard.

ELIZABETHTOWN — As the bells ring out the old and prepare to ring in the new, local non-profits, including emergency food shelves and food pantries, could use the public’s help.

With the colder weather and the current economic situation, food pantries and other organizations have seen an increased need for their services.

“The need is up,” said Marilyn Jordan with the Elizabethtown Community Food Shelf. “We keep statistics and we have a comparison report that we look at. We now have four years of figures and you can just see how each year the figures have just gone up.”

As an example, Jordan said in November of 2007, 60 people were served by the food shelf. In November of this year, that number was 123 people.

“It has basically doubled,” said Jordan.

Jordan said that while the need has grown, the community has been there to help.

“Community support is wonderful,” said Jordan. “It runs the gambit from Girl Scout groups to Kiwanis members, businesses, farms and private individuals. People support it in a variety of ways that are so helpful to us.”

Along with donations and gifts, Jordan said that there are also a number of volunteers who have stepped up to help out.

“We have some 30 volunteers ranging in age from 13 who teams with her mom all the way up to people in their 70’s,” said Jordan.

Hudson also said he has enjoyed talking about the experience of serving a mission with his father, Steve, who also served a two-year mission for the Mormon church.

“He was an inspiration to me and I hope that I can be the same to my younger brother and nieces and nephews who are wondering if they should go on a mission,” said Hudson.

Overall, Hudson, who will return to college at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, in January, said that the time spent as a LDS missionary was well worth it.

“I had a great experience and it really helped me develop more as a person,” said Hudson.

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com WESTPORT — In December of 2008, Westport resident Scott Hudson didn’t even know where Haiti was or who came from there.

Now, after two years serving among Haitian immigrants in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Hudson has come to have a deep appreciation and love for the people.

“It was a very eye-opening experience,” said Hudson, who went to Florida as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, assigned to serve in the Florida Fort Lauderdale Mission as a missionary specializing in speaking Haitian-Creole.

“I learned a great deal, not only with the language and with the people, but I was able to look back on who I was as a person and I learned a lot about myself and who I wanted to be.”

Hudson started his two-year proselyting mission when he entered the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah, on Dec. 3, 2008, and returned to New York on Nov. 18, 2010.

“I didn’t know anything about Haitians before or where they were from,” said Hudson. “I really didn’t even know where Haiti was. Now that I have had the chance to learn about the people and the culture, I have grown to love and appreciate them.

I have really learned a lot from them all.”

In order to work with Haitian immigrants in Florida, the first thing that Hudson had to do was learn the language, which is a mixture of several other languages, including French.

“A lot of it at first was just the memorization,” said Hudson. “You learned simple conversation starters and other important phrases. From there, you just went on

to larger things.”

While Hudson received a crash-course in the language at the MTC, he was surprised by seeing the language in-use in Florida.

“I brought a notebook along with me to write down whatever I could pick up from conversations,” said Hudson. “It was really tough at first, but you slowly pick it up over time.”

Over the last two years, Hudson has always been working with a partner, or companion, while serving as a missionary.

“We would get up at 6:30 a.m. and exercise, which was always easy to do in south

Florida,” said Hudson. “Then we would have about three hours of study before we would go out and work. If we didn’t have scheduled appointments, we would just talk to people and find out if they needed help or wanted to know more about our church.”

Hudson said he and his fellow HaitianCreole speaking missionaries had the chance to serve the community even more when the earthquake struck the island nation of Haiti earlier this year.

“We had the opportunity to do quite a bit of community service,” said Hudson.

Open house scheduled for Tahawus Lodge center renovation AU SABLE FORKS — Step by step, an ambitious vision is becoming a reality in this quaint mountain hamlet: a new center of commerce and cultural activity is taking shape — benefiting directly from an outpouring of community support in an old mill town busy being reborn as a gateway to the Greater Lake Placid Olympic region in New York State’s grand Adirondack Park.

The creation of the new cultural center, which involves renovating the hamlet’s historic Masonic Lodge — renamed the Tahawus Lodge Center, or “TLC” for short — is the project of the Manhattan-based dance troupe, Rebecca Kelly Ballet, and its umbrella organization, the Appleby Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1979.

Much of the actual construction work, however, is being supplied by local businesses and contractors, some of whom are

donating materials, services or labor. In the span of less than 15 months since the building was purchased, a steady stream of “home improvement” activity has taken place at 14234 Main St. Before renovations took place, architectural design and planning was supplied by Premises, the architectural team of Bryan Burke and Beverly Eichenlaub, based in Essex. Overall construction is led by Shawn Casey of the local outfit, High Peaks Builders. Lee Adams, from Essex, fabricated the doors.

In early November, TLC learned it would become the recipient of a significant gift when Cold Spring Granite Company agreed to donate stone for the two entry ways.

Headquartered in Minnesota, the company has operated locally in Au Sable Forks.

“We at Cold Spring Granite are proud to be able to help with the renovation of the

Tahawus Lodge Center,” said the granite company’s general manager Rick Barber.

“This 100-year-old landmark building will be just the kick-start the town needs for its renewal.”

One of those local businesses is Ward Lumber, one of the largest manufacturers of Eastern white pine lumber in New York State and located just down the road from TLC in the hamlet of Jay. It was lumber company president Sidney “Jay” Ward III who first approached Cold Spring Granite.

“I have fond memories of going to the Adirondack Record newspaper offices with my grandmother in the basement of the Tahawus building,” recalled Ward. “It’s great to see the space brought back to life and adding to our community’s arts and cultural opportunities.”

“This much-appreciated gesture by the Cold Spring Granite Company supports not

only the project, but the town, for this will be an elegant and most visible addition,” said Rebecca Kelly. “Jay Ward has been wonderful in his follow-through and encouragement in helping to make this happen. What an accomplishment.

Now that actual work has begun, one of the biggest selling points for donations and additional grant monies may prove to be tours of the building itself. Toward that end, the TLC team has announced an Open House celebration for Wednesday, Dec. 29, from 3 to 7 p.m. Visitors will be able to view the potential in all four levels of the building, see firsthand the progress that has been made and review plans for the next phase of renovations.

Sugar Cookies Ingredients

Preparation

• 1 1/2 cups butter, softened • 2 cups white sugar • 4 eggs • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 5 cups all-purpose flour • 2 teaspoons baking powder • 1 teaspoon salt

1. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cover, and chill dough for at least one hour (or overnight).

2. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Roll out dough on floured surface 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Cut into shapes with any cookie cutter. Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets.

3. Bake 6 to 8 minutes in preheated oven. Cool completely.

Quest for city of Saranac Lake not supported by village board

By Jon Alexander denpubs@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — The committee formed by the Saranac Lake Village Board designed to study and lobby for the proposed city status of the village faces an uphill battle.

The village board didn’t endorse the city proposal outright Dec. 20, but did vote to create an implementation committee.

The creation of a new city requires approval by state legislators.

And now part of the incoming GOP majority, state Senator Elizabeth O’C Little, R-Queensbury, is faced with the opposition of most leaders from the three towns and two counties within which the village lies.

“Creating a city at this point — a new level of government — is inconsistent with what we’re hearing at the state today,” she said. “Governor Cuomo has talked about reducing the levels of government by consolidating and dissolving so we lower property taxes.”

In the report issued by consultants hired by the village, it’s suggested that village dissolution would cost all area taxpayers significantly more than city creation.

But Little isn’t sure if she’s buying it.

“I do question some of the consultants,” she said. “They always seem to come up with an increase in taxes and I don’t see how you do that if you dissolve and become more efficient.”

Local officials have struggled for years with the problems created because Saranac Lake is in both Essex and Franklin counties and multiple towns.

Little said she is planning on sitting down with the city proponents and discussing what’s next. She said she understands Saranac Lake is in a unique situation because it’s located in multiple towns and counties.

“I’m open to listening and to working with them. I’d like to sit down with their committee,” she said. “I’ve read the report — most of it — but I don’t understand what the consultants were doing.”

Many town and county leaders — like St. Armand Supervisor Joyce Morency — oppose the move because, at the town level, it would cost them thousands in property tax revenue. Both Essex and Franklin counties stand to lose significant amounts in sales tax revenue.

“I’m not in favor of it and I think it will have a hard time making it through Albany,” she said. “I don’t see either county supporting it.”

Unlike villages, cities can keep almost all of their local taxes in house and largely remove the towns and counties from the equation. Proponents of the plan argue it is a necessary step to strip back the numer-

ous layers of government that encompass Saranac Lake.

A relatively small town, St. Armand would lose a whopping $70,000 in annual revenue, creating a hole in its budget.

The towns and counties have consistently remained in Little’s ear, lobbying against the city proposal.

Essex County Chairman Randy Douglas said Dec. 15 he is “reserving comment” on the issue until a final proposal is presented.

But he did suggest a different strategy.

“Quite honestly, I don’t think Essex County has left them out of anything.

We’re always willing to sit down with anybody to discuss what their needs are,” he said. “I think they have some frustration. I love to sit down with them at some point and talk about what they are hoping to gain by becoming a city.”

A city hasn’t been created in New York in almost 70 years.

And that’s another issue Little sees as a hurdle.

“There hasn’t been any legislation to create a city since 1942. At that time, there wasn’t any sales tax that a city could preempt from the county and property tax was pretty miniscule,” she said. “Getting it through the Assembly, the Senate and the governor ’s desk could be very difficult.”

Douglas did note the proposal’s chances of surviving Albany’s legislative process remain questionable.

“I remain neutral on this until I hear all of the plans,” he said. “Do I think it has potential of getting passed in the state legislature? I don’t foresee that happening, but you never know in this business. Anything can happen.”

But not everyone outside of the village is skeptical of the plan.

Harrietstown Supervisor Larry Miller said he supports the proposal as long as it would include continued support for the Adirondack Regional Airport.

“I and my board support being a city. I have no objections to it. I think it’s smart planning on their part,” he said. “There needs to be some negotiations and some way to make the airport a formal authority through the state where all of the entities in the Tri-Lakes help provide support.”

Even those in support of the “city option” acknowledge the initiative is an uphill battle Village Deputy Mayor Jeff Branch — who sat on the committee that oversaw the plan’s creation — told the Adirondack Daily Enterprise its success is dependent on intense negotiations.

“It’s about negotiating with the towns and with the counties,” he said. “It’s going to be a long, hard process but I think a worthy one.”

By Jon Alexander denpubs@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — Police arrested a Malone man late last week after they found 119 pounds of pot in his possession in Saranac Lake.

Following an investigation by the multiagency Franklin County Drug Task Force, 57 year-old Lee Marlowe was charged with first-degree criminal possession of marijuana — a class C felony.

Police said he was arraigned before village Justice Ken McLaughlin and sent to Franklin County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash

LAKE PLACID — Approximately twodozen young artists from the Lake Placid Middle School and Shipman Youth Center went to the Whiteface Ski Center Dec. 20, to see the results of their artistic efforts — more than 300 leaves and snowflakes that are part of a 80-foot long mural that celebrates the four seasons and now graces the tunnel that goes through Base Lodge to the gondola lift — a tunnel that is traversed by over 200,000 visitors each year.

The project, developed under the auspices of Lake Placid-Wilmington Connection Youth and Community and the guidance of CYC art coordinator Naj Wikoff, as part of their I Matter campaign to highlight the importance and talents of young people, and create a drug, tobacco and alcohol free environments for them so they may fully develop their talents.

“This project was a really collaborative effort by local youth,” said Wikoff. “The mural was designed by kids who participate in the Wilmington Youth Center, and painted by them and kids from the Lake Placid Middle School and the Shipman Youth Center. It represents a huge undertaking. It is over 1,300-square feet in size. Whiteface is to be commended for giving the students the op-

Unfortunately Lake Placid kids couldn’t make it out in November when the mural was unveiled, so for most of these kids it will be their first chance to see their artistic talents on display.”

State Troopers to be equiped with tasers

By Chris Morris denpubs@denpubs.com RAY BROOK — New York State Police recently announced troopers will now be equipped with tasers.

Officials announced Dec. 17 troopers will be supplied with new, less-lethal safety tools for confronting violent individuals.

“State Police recently completed training in the use of Taser ECDs (Electronic Control Devices), and today troopers will begin a pilot program with some troopers carrying ECDs during each shift,” officials said in a news release.

Last July, the New York State Trooper Foundation donated 142 Taser model X-26 ECD units to state police. Under a new pilot program, several troopers in each patrol area throughout the state will be set up with the new tasers, including Troop B in Ray Brook.

The units equipped with tasers will be available to assist other troopers in the event of a violent or escalating confrontation.

Law enforcement experts say the use of tasers is one of the best ways to confront violent offenders without using deadly force.

Officials say law enforcement agencies deploying the use of tasers have seen a dramatic decrease in suspect and officer injuries.

Lake Placid’s John Napier national hero on track and battlefield

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — In the past year, John Napier has experienced one wild ride.

First, Napier jumped into the headlines as a rising star in the United State Bobsled and Skeleton Federation, capturing gold in Lake Placid last year.

Then, he captured headlines when he left the national bobsledding team to join another national team: the United States military.

“I was really passionate about deploying,” Napier said, who served with the 86th Army Brigade in the 3-172nd Infantry. “I was deploying either way, if the spot in the bobsled was there for me when I came back or not. Luckily, Brian Shimmer (USA head coach) was able to hold a spot for me.”

From June until one month ago, Napier was stationed in the Afghan province of Patika, where he an his comrades were the first military presence in the area.

“We were sent there to secure an outpost in Patika and make sure that the Taliban knew that there was a military presence there,” said Napier.

Such a mission was quite the concern at home for his mother, Elizabeth “Betsey” Napier, who has been a long-time volunteer at the bobsledding complex at Mount Van Hoevenberg.

“It is very good to see him back from Afghanistan,” Elizabeth said. “I think that he is getting back into the swing of things.

He really enjoys racing, but anyone coming back from that is going to have some issues

that they have to deal with and it will take longer than a month to do that.”

Both Napier ’s said they were able to stay in contact and assure each other that the other was fine during the six-month deployment.

“We had one satellite phone that was able tobe used by the men, so I would try to call once every couple of days and that call would almost always be used on my mother,” John said.

Now, though, John can see his mother every day, and she can see him as he crosses the finish line during each run, something that he did for a seventh-place finish at this weekends World Cup event in Lake Placid.

“I was kind of worried about how I was going to be my first few trips down the track,” Napier said. “But after the first two or three weeks, it was just like I was back doing what I was supposed to be doing.”

Napier said those first runs came five days after he had returned from active service, and two days before a World Cup event.

“It was a wired feeling, but as soon as I got out to the track and got in the sled, it started feeling better and better,” he said.

Napier said while he was happy to be back, the time served as a member of the military helped him re-focus on life and sliding.

“I have spent 16 years where bobsledding is the only thing that I have thought about,” Napier said. “I achieved my goal and I made it to the Olympics. After that, there was a little burn out. Being deployed was the hard break that I needed and I am refreshed and ready to go.”

Seney comes home for college hockey game LAKE PLACID — Lake Placid native Ed Seney will return home when his Saint Anselm College men’s ice hockey team faces off against Canton ATC, Saturday, Jan. 1, in Lake Placid’s Olympic Center. Game time in the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena is scheduled for 1 p.m.

In his ninth season behind the bench, Seney has guided the Hawks to a 3-3 overall record this season and has posted a 114-87-14 since joining the Northeast 10 Conference School in 2002. Before taking the helm of the Saint Anselm program, Seney had coached at the State University of New York at Potsdam for 14 seasons and was named the New York Athletic Conference Coach of the Year three times. In becoming the school’s winningest coach, Seney’s teams captured the 1996 SUNYAC championship title and skated in eight NCAA Division III men’s ice hockey tournaments. He was also inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2007.

At Saint Anselm, Seney’s squad is led by two sophomore forwards, Tucker Mullin (Andover, Mass.) and Timothy

King (Weymouth, Mass.). Mullin leads the team with five goals and six assists, while King has nine assists to go along with a pair of goals.

A pair of high scoring sophomores from Orleans, Ontario, has sparked the Kangaroos to a 17-3-0 mark to start the season. Adam Fedor leads Canton’s offensive attack with 23 goals and 14 assists, while Corey Frizell also has 37 points with 10 goals and a team-best 27 assists for the reigning Eastern Collegiate Hockey League regular season champions.

Police: man shoved kids, drove drunk

damage motor vehicle accident, where a subsequent investigation revealed Boyer was driving under the influence of alcohol.

During the investigation, police learned Boyer had been involved in a domestic dispute prior to the accident. He allegedly pushed two children younger than 17 years of age.

In all, Boyer was charged with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a property damage motor vehicle accident, failure to keep right, and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.He was processed at the police department, arraigned in village court before Justice Ken McLaughlin, and released to reappear at a later date.

Westport girls score key early season win against Schroon Lake

In the final eight minutes, she found it.

Sherman scored seven of her team-high 10 points and recorded four steals in the final quarter, including a 5-6 performance from the free thrown line and a key basket with less than three minutes to play to help life the Lady Eagles to a 37-32 win over the Schroon Lake Lady Wildcats Dec. 17.

“There’s pressure and there is a lot on your shoulders,” said Sherman about her fourth quarter performance at the charity stripe. “You don’t want to miss them and I wanted to be perfect for my team.”

The key basket of the game came off a steal

Patriots win big against Seton

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The Ausable Valley Central varsity girls basketball team defeated the lady Seton Knights 60-17 in a Dec. 17 match-up.

The Patriots’ Alexis Coolidge scored 21 points, followed by Alexis Facteau with 17, including seven for nine from the free throw line.

The AVCS girls forced Seton to have 22 turnovers in the game, with no one on the Seton team scoring more than four points.

AVCS coach Roger Long said his team was able to contain Seton’s ball handling with their pressure defense, limiting them to one shot on the offensive end.

“We were able to move the ball well against their zone taking a high percentage of our shots inside the paint, and we got to the free throw line quite a bit,” said Long.

Following the game, AVCS was positioned at 3-0 in division standings and 3-1 overall, with a loss coming to the hands of Franklin Academy 59-56.

“That was great team defense in the second quarter,” said coach Hokey McKinley.

“We stepped up the pressure and that was big in a game that had it’s ebs and flows.

Both teams really left it all out on the court.”

McKinley added having experienced players helped out in the fourth quarter, when Schroon Lake cut the lead to 32-30 before a 5-2 run sealed the win.

“They have all been through it before and it’s huge,” said McKinley.

“The experience helped a lot because we know the situation and we know how each other plays,” said Allison Sherman.

“It’s a lot less pressure,” said Christina Sherman.

Nancy Armitage added four points and seven rebounds for the Eagles, while Brendee Russell scored all six of her points off the bench in the second quarter and Karlee McGee added two points and two rebounds.

Schroon Lake’s Rebecca Armstrong led all scorers with 13 points and 14 rebounds, while Jocelyn Bowen added 13 points to go with seven rebounds and six assists.

AVCS 73, Seton 35 The Patriots started the game on a 27-6 run and cruised to a 73-35 win over the Knights Dec. 17.

T.J. Burl led a solid overall attack with 15 points, nine rebounds and eight steals, while Brody Douglass and Jordan Coolidge each scored 14 points in the win.

Austin House added 12 points, while Connor Manning scored eight points and Ryan Lee added four.

AVCS 51, Harwood, Vt. 42 The Patriots used a gate charge in the final eight minutes to take control of the game and capture their home hoops tournament Dec. 18.

Brody Douglass led the Patriots with 20 points in the game, with Connor Manning adding 13 points, Jordan Collidge 12 points, and T.J. Burl six points along with 10 rebounds.

Austin House also had a solid game defensively in the win.

The Patriots finished in eighth place at the Ken Harrison Memorial Lions Tournament in Granville over the past weekend.

David Thompson scored three victories by pin at 285, including a pin at the 3:30 mark to earn the tournament championship.

Adam Luxon won his first two matches at 215 in the tournament, but was pinned three seconds before the end of the second twominute period on what was described as a

controversial call.

Ryan Nolan also scored a top three finish, losing his first match of the tournament, but then sweeping through the wrestle-back bracket at 189.

Peru 72, AuSable Valley 9 The Patriots scored wins in the top two weight classes, but were unable to tally any more points in falling to the Indians Dec. 15.

Bouyea scored a 14-7 decision in his match at 215-lbs., while Thompson scored a pin.

Provost tallied a 469 series that was highlighted by a high game of 212, while Holland rolled a 411 series with a high game of 140.

Willsboro 10, Moriah 0 Willsboro 4, Moriah 0 Gabi Yaeger was the top bowler for Warriors, scoring a 182 high game and series to lead the Lady Warriors past Lady Vikings Dec. 17.

Allison Arnold rolled a high game of to go with a 495 series in the win.

On the boys side, Adam Robare paced the Warriors with a 178 high game and 465 series, while Dakota Latford rolled a 472 high series which was highlighted by a 173 game.

AVCS 7, PHS 3 PHS 4, AVCS 0 Jeremy Wood was the top bowler at the Riverside Lanes Dec. 17, rolling a 202 high game and 536 series as the Patriots scored a 7-3 win over the Hornets.

Zach Snow rolled the highest game for the Patriots with a 204, which helped him to a 476 series.

For the girls, a 437 series from Katie Holland was not enough to earn a victory against the Lady Hornets, while Tonie Cross added a high game of 159.

Hank McCormick and Ben Ford each scored two wins for the Patriots during a trimeet involving the Hornets and the Eagles Dec. 14.

McCormick won the 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter freestyle events, while Ford was atop the leaderboard in the 200-meter individual medley and the 500-meter freestyle events.

Ben Ford was one of only two swimmers to finish ahead of Beekmantown’s Dan McGovern in the five-event pentathlon Dec. 17, scoring a victory in the 200-meter individual medley in Malone.

Hank McCormick finished fourth in the event, while scoring a second place finish in the 100-meter breaststroke, where he was followed by Ford in third place.

The week in Sports: Boys/girls varsity hockey SLCS 10, LPCS 3 The Red Storm scored five goals in the second period to turn a tie game into 7-2 lead heading into the second intermission before handing the Blue Bombers a 10-3 loss Dec. 13.

Dolan Riley tallied six points for the Red Storm on a pair of goals and four assists, including two of the three goals scored by Devin Darrah.

Kyle Dora and Quinn Urquhart each scored twice for Saranac Lake, while Matt Phelan also added a goal. Tyler O’Neill made 18 saves in the win.

Eddie Kane scored a pair of goals for the Blue Bombers, with Dylan Riley adding the other tally for the team. Dylan Aldridge recorded seven saves for Lake Placid, while Stan Kornecki tallied eight.

LPCS 2, Saranac 0 The Blue Bombers tallied goals in the second and third periods to earn a 2-0 shutout win against Saranac Dec. 15.

R.J. Reid opened the scoring in the second period, while Ryan Meyer scored in the third on a goal assisted by Dustin Jacques.

Tyler O’Neill made nine saves in the win, while Marcus Richer turned away 25 shots for the Lumberjacks.

Girls Hockey SLCS 3, St. Lawrence 0 The Lady Red Storm scored two goals in the first period and added an insurance tally in the second in shutting out St. Lawrence Dec. 15.

Shannon Muldowney scored the opening goal of the game for the Lady Red Storm, followed by a pair of goals by Jillian Martin.

Muldowney tallied an assist, while Kennedy Snyder assisted on both of Martin’s goals.

Erin Urquhart stopped 14 shots in the shutout.

SLCS 2, Canton 2 OT Maggie Darrah scored the equalizer midway through the second period and the Lady Red Storm was able to keep the Canton offense in check for the rest of the game Dec. 18.

Kennedy Snyder assisted on the game-tying goal, while McKayla Duffy opened the scoring in the first period on a Shannon Muldowney assist.

Megan Riley led all scorers with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Mackenzie Kemmerer added 13 points and Dani Balestrini scored four points to go with 15 rebounds.

Stephanie Murphy and Catalina Daby each added five points.
