“Holiday Fun with Steven Kellogg” will take place at the Whallonsburg Grange on Dec. 18.

Kellogg to host holiday fun at Grange hall WHALLONSBURG — World-famous children’s book author and illustrator, Steven Kellogg, and Andy Buchanon, a University of Vermont history lecturer, will team up to amuse and delight children and adults alike on Dec. 18, at 4 p.m. at the Whallonsburg Grange during “Holiday Fun with Steven Kellogg.” The event will benefit the North Country SPCA. During Act 1, Buchanon will narrate Champlain’s Cat’s Dream, while Kellogg illustrates the story in real-time. Originally written for the NCSPCA, Champlain’s Cat’s Dream is now being considered for publication as a book. For Act 2, Kellogg will read and illustrate one of his most popular children’s books, The Island of the Skog.

“The number of abused and abandoned

pets in our country is a tragedy. I am participating in the event on Saturday to support our local shelter, bring awareness to the importance of pet adoption, and provide a chance for the families of the community to gather for a holiday celebration,” Kellogg said.

The Island of the Skog, along with Kellogg’s most recent book, And I Love You, will be available for purchase at the event. All books will be signed by Kellogg and 50-percent of the proceeds will be donated directly to the NCSPCA. In addition, there will be a silent auction featuring Kellogg’s illustrations from the day’s readings.

Come celebrate the holidays and support the dogs and cats at the NCSPCA. The event is $5 per adult, with children under 12 free.

supporter of the NCSPCA Animal Shelter asks me to remind readers that the volunteers who walk the shelter dogs probably aren't going to turn down any cookies, brownies, or other baked goods that concerned citizens might be inclined to drop off during the holiday season. "These folks walk those darling dogs for several hours a day, seven days a week regardless of the weather. You can not imagine how they light up when you show up with a treat for them, or any sort."

That sounds like the voice of experience from a kind reader who could maybe use some back-up.

Nona Hoskins asks me to pass along a great big "Thank You" to all the people who have helped with the Food Shelf. "As you know," she writes, "the Boy Scouts passed out plastic bags to be filled and collected them the following week. There had to be about 40 large bags of items—that gave our Food Shelf a real 'shot in the arm.'" She also thanks Pastor Leon Hebrink and the Westport Federated Church, the

ladies of the Bridge Club, the seniors of Westport and E'town, the Carroll family, and Dogwood Bread Company for making the Thanksgiving Boxes (24 of them) such a success.

Finally, in addition to all of the wonderful donors, Nona wants to thank her trusty helpers Dan McCormick, Brad Rascoe, Sue Frisbie, and Tammy Schreiber. "The students and staff of Westport Central were also very generous," Nona continues, "and so we have a nice surplus for Christmas.

This community is truly blessed with people that care for those in need. Have a wonderful Christmas knowing you have helped so many families."

I couldn't have said it better myself, which is why I didn't try to. Nona's words seem so much more appropriate. On that note, here's a holiday reminder that this is really your column, not mine. If you've got someone you'd like to thank for their public spirit, let me know at the email address above. I'd love to give you a voice in this space, too.

here are so many wonderful festivities this time of the year. This past Friday evening “The Festival of Carols” Concert at the Essex Methodist Church was wonderful. This was the Pleasant Valley Chorale blending nearly 50 voices singing songs of the season was truly a treat. This group has put in many hours of practice so it was great that they performed to a full house; it seems that each year this is a coveted holiday event. I paid a visit to the Paine Library to view the craft items on sale there, they are the works of area crafters of outstanding quality. If you are still looking for a gift to give to a person on your list, you should stop in and take a look, they are available during the library hours.

It is so delightful to drive around town after dark and view the many wonderful outside decorations. Ben on Main Street has really out done his decorations this year. Reminder if you have done an outside decoration and would like to be en-

The meeting continued over lunch, with Jud discussing pest problems. We heard about the cunning of aphids, which aren’t killed off by cold temperatures, but survive in some form of limbo and get destructive again when temperatures rise . Slugs cause serious damage if allowed to proliferate, but can be controlled with iron phosphate, an organic option. I’m glad to hear Cornell pushing organic methods. All in all, it was delightful to hear a good talk, eat a warming lunch, and ponder where I’m going to put my own high tunnel.

There’s something appealing about this time of year, when a bit of snow in the fields reveals animal pathways through the grass, and deciduous trees show their structures. Houses and barns that are hidden by foliage come back into view and there’s a nice clarity to the landscape. In places, it’s admittedly bleak, but it’s not an unending dreariness: a good snowfall will take care of that.

he streets at night are looking beautiful as Christmas decorations are appearing everywhere. My neighbor is indeed hard at work building a Christmas masterpiece. Thank you again to all who take the time to brighten everybody’s day with the wonderful displays.

With Christmas only a week away there is a lot of Christmas shopping going on frantically. Don’t forget that we have our own wonderful stores as well as great restaurants with gift certificates. Let’s try to shop locally and keep the funds in our community.

Last week I mentioned having a family tradition to create memories. A lot of us can remember as kids those magical nights when our beloved Christmas cartoons would be on such as Peanuts, Mr. Magoo, The Grinch, Rudolph and others. If you missed it that was it for the whole year; I really miss the magic of that one night every year – it made those shows such a family event. Try it just designate one or two nights to special family Holiday special night with all the trimmings. Not real-

ly that hard and promises to be a great time for the whole family.

As I had said, my tradition is to read Dickens’ A Christmas Carol every year. On that same idea there are many great books to enjoy during the season. Dickens has four other great stories in his Christmas series including A Cricket on the Hearth; Debbie Macomber has a wonderful Mrs. Miracle book series that have also been made into movies. Henry van Dyke has a great book entitled The Story of the Other Wise Man. David Balducci has The Christmas Train. Even Mary Higgins Clark with her daughter has a Holiday Mystery series.

There are also plenty of great children’s books as well. Robert Mays Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Thomas Kinkade has a great series of Christmas Carols brought to life with his amazing paintings.

These and so many more great books, and with the great library that we have there is no need to spend any money on them. Enjoy these timeless classics.

caught a lot of flack for poking fun at Cornell professors, especially the ones Amy has over for dinner. In retrospect, it was unkind of me to make fun of them, but there’s something a little irksome about well-educated and very skinny people who are unreformed chowhounds.

The most recent Cornell visitor at our house was a vegetable specialist, Jud Reid, who specializes in unheated greenhouses called high tunnels. Crops are planted directly in the ground, and with the ends removed, tilling can be done by tractor. We visited the high tunnels at the Willsboro Research Farm with a group of growers on a cold and windy day last week. In the greenhouses, good looking plots of arugula, lettuce and spinach were laid out, green and healthy even though the air temperature was around freezing. Jud gave an off the cuff talk on these particular crops and cold weather growing in general, while we asked questions and shivered. The spinach was especially attractive, with lots of large deep green leaves, but sampling is forbid-

tered into the town wide decoration contest, you need to call the town hall and register.

All of the churches are planning special Christmas Eve services and there is always a welcome to all interested persons. Many of the times are listed on Cable or visit the town web site. I do know that the Reber Methodist church will hold their candle light service at 6 p.m. in Reber. The Willsboro United Methodist Church will hold their Candlelight service at 7:30 p.m. in Willsboro; at this service the children will act out the Nativity story, along with special music. At this writing the weather is not showing the nice white snow covered ground that we see pictured in Christmas card, but we still might get it before the 24th and Santa’s visit.

Ivy’s is a callous message To the Valley News: Perhaps if someone in Rob Ivy’s family had to travel to Burlington for chemotherapy three days a week, or if all the roads between Reber and Essex were closed, requiring a two hour detour for him to get to work, he would not be quite so keen on the “isolation” that a closed winter ferry affords. “Be of good cheer” is a callous message to neighbors struggling with medical and employment issues, working diligently to fight misconceptions perpetuated by him (the state subsidies are not miniscule) and others. The ferry-using communities on both sides of the Lake have presented a united front to a ferry company apparently deaf to the concept of true public service. Although he is of course entitled to his own opinion, that the Deputy Supervisor from Essex writes a contrary view in an opinion piece in this paper reveals a similar handicap.

To the Valley News: One of the best things about living where we live is the sense of security we hold on to with all our might. This is ever so evident whenever you leave Essex County and all of sudden have to take your keys out of the ignition when you go inside, or even lock your doors. It is only because of this ability to trust our neighbors, that I even considered writing this note.

On Dec. 8 I left my wallet in my shopping cart when I left the Grand Union in Elizabethtown. I realized it within 5 minutes and came back to the store where the very gracious staff helped me look all over for it with no luck. Within that hour, someone did return it to the manager saying that they had found it in a shopping cart. As it turns out, somewhere during that hour, someone had taken the wallet and removed the cash that was in it and returned the wallet with its credit cards and other plastic. I am not complaining, I think this is more than one could expect in most larger towns. I did however, want to appeal to this person not for the cash, but in dumping the change out of the change purse, they also found a ring that is very dear to me, not worth much should he/she try to sell it, but very sentimental to me. It has a gold band and pretty medium blue stone.

If by chance the person is reading this note, I wanted to ask if they do still have my ring perhaps they could just mail it to me, it would mean much more to me than anyone else who might end up with the ring. If it has been cashed in somewhere, maybe you could send me that information as I would try to get it back.

Thankful for support To the Valley News: The Community Food Shelf wishes to express its gratitude to members of the local communities for their continuing support of our efforts to provide emergency or supplemental food assistance to needy families. We expect by year ’s end that we will have provided over 20,000 pounds of food to about 450 households totaling 1500 persons.

Over many years, the food shelf has received strong support from area clergy and church members. Many individuals and families have contributed monetary donations, food items and produce from their gardens.

Dismayed by Essex column To the Valley News: It was disheartening to read Rob Ivy’s comments in his Essex column in your Dec. 11 issue welcoming the possible closure of the Essex Ferry this winter. Hundreds of residents of the Champlain Valley in Vermont and New York have been working to persuade Lake Champlain Transportation to keep the ferry open. Mr. Ivy, who is also the Deputy Supervisor of the Town of Essex, has undermined that effort by his flippant dismissal of the needs of his constituents who use the ferry daily and weekly to get to jobs, school, medical appointments or for business reasons. In the same issue, Colin Wells wrote an inspiring story about the community support for Molly Rascoe’s long struggle and its wonderful outcome – an example of how important year-round, dependable ferry service is to our families and neighbors. The “isolation” that Mr. Ivy doesn’t mind means something very different to people whose jobs and well-being depend on the ferry. Like it or not, Mr. Ivy, we as a community need this service.

I believe that LCT can and should be accountable as a company whose business is public service – a company that has received millions in federal grants and gets tens of thousands of dollars in state subsidies every day at Crown Point, not the “miniscule” amount that Mr. Ivy claims. We may be fortunate enough to have a mild winter and the ferry that LCT has assigned will keep running. But as someone who uses the ferry to get to work, I am not of “good cheer” at the thought of a 4-hour commute every day, for the 2nd year in a row.

Mr. Ivy is entitled to his opinion. But I hope, in future, that the Valley News will offer him a separate opinion article rather than allowing the use of the Local News column for this. At present, we get musings from his cross-country trips, dog-walking and sarcastic comments about his dinner guests along with ill-considered opinions like the ones he presented supporting the ferry closure. I hope in the future that Mr. Ivy will consider making better use of his weekly column to write about local events and news.

ESSEX — Champlain Area Trails (CATS) is hosting a “Holiday Hike” at the Wildway Overlook Trail in Essex Saturday morning, Dec. 18 from 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

“We invite everyone to start the holiday season by walking up this easy trail to a spectacular view of the Champlain Valley,” said Chris Maron, Executive Director of CATS. The Wildway Overlook Trail is a new and already-popular trail that is part of the hiking/skiing trail network CATS is developing to link local communities, connect people to nature, and promote economic vitality. It goes up the moderate slope of the west side of South Boquet Mountain on land owned by the Eddy Foundation. Hikers will see Lake Champlain, local farmland, Vermont’s Green Mountains, and the “Split Rock Wildway” which is the wildlife corridor connecting habitat along Lake Champlain to the Adirondack Mountains.

Steven Kellogg, the noted artist/illustrator who lives in Essex, was so impressed with the trail that he created a beautiful illustration of this trail for CATS. He said, “These trails are a great benefit for our communities because they provide healthy outdoor recreation for families, children, and people of all ages.”

The Wildway Overlook Trail is on Brookfield Road in Essex, about three quarters of a mile south of Jersey Street. The hike is free and open to the public. Westport students receive surprise visitor at assembly

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com WESTPORT — They were expecting someone from the Air Force to come around the corner, just not the person that appeared.

For Kaleigh, DJ and Jayden Rodriguez, the assembly at Westport Central School Friday, Dec. 10 was to practice for the annual hallway caroling and to announce that the cards that the students had made for their father, Air Force Technical Sgt. Steve Rodriguez, were on their way to South Korea.

However, the trio of students were informed that the cards had not made it into the mail on time, and that a special representative from the Air Force was coming to deliver them personally.

That representative turned out to be Technical Sgt. Steve Rodriguez — the children’s father.

“I was surprised,” said Jayden, a thirdgrader.

“I didn’t expect my dad to come around the corner,” said Kaleigh, a sixth-grader. “It took a second for it to sink in that it was him.”

“It was awesome,” said DJ, a fifth-grader.

“Now he will be home to go to my basketball games and help coach me.”

Sgt. Rodriguez said that when he learned he would be coming back to his family, who had moved to Westport just a couple of weeks before he was deployed to South Korea about five months previous, he thought he would try something that he had seen done on YouTube.

“I saw a collection of homecomings like this on YouTube,” Rodriguez said. “I told my wife, Melissa, about this idea and she

Michelle Friedman, principal at Westport Central School, said they were excited when Melissa approached them.

“If we have a chance that we can work it out, I told them that we would absolutely go for it,” said Friedman, who gave the credit for the event to fifth-grade teacher Kathy Bedore.

“I just like doing stuff for people,” said Bedore, who teaches DJ in her classroom.

“It’s great to see how things like this make people happy.”

Bedore said the plan was to surprise the kids through a bunch of “little white lies.”

“We all made cards to send to him, and DJ took them down to the office this morning so we could mail them out,” Bedore said.

“We then set up the assembly to sing songs and to talk about those who were serving and to let them know that we had a special representative from the Air Force here. The faculty and staff were great about it and

everyone who helped pull this off was fantastic.”

“We wanted to make sure that we did this in a way that was appropriate and that added to the educational experience,” said Friedman. “We felt that this was a great opportunity and you add this to everything else that is going on here, and it has just been an emotional high for this school over the past month.”

For Rodriguez, the chance to be home for the holidays added something special to the surprise homecoming.

“It feels good, I’m glad and they are happy now,” said Rodriguez. “It was perfect timing. I’m overwhelmed and so excited that I got the chance to come back for the holidays.”

Rodriguez got to the school after a long flight and trip from Burlington, Vt., but said that the fatigue left him when he entered the school auditorium.

“I was dog tired,” said Rodriguez. “But when I hit the corner of that door, I woke right up.”

Rodriguez added that while he was excited to see his kids, he had another thought as he first entered the room.

“Don’t fall down in front of all these students was my real first thought,” he joked.

“Then I was wondering where my kids were and getting to see them.”

Rodriguez also took time to thank the community of Westport for their support.

“I barely got a chance to see the place before I left,” he said. “The people have been so kind and supportive of my family, and the school has been great. This community has been amazing. Westport rocks, and this school rocks.”

That is the question that the Willsboro town board is asking in regard to the future of the roof on the historical center.

“We wanted to repair the current roof, but the price came in high and I feel that the best way to go is to put an asphalt roof on,” said town board member Steve Benway.

Benway said the town had requested bids for installing a new asphalt roof previously, but the town had rejected all bids the first time around.

Town supervisor Ed Hatch also said the town had received a bid for a new slate roof for the center.

“We got a bid for a slate roof that came in around $73,000,” said Hatch.

After receiving the price, Hatch said he had talked with members of the historical society about what they wanted to do.

“When we talked, they indicated that they would be willing to go along with an asphalt roof,” said Hatch.

Paula Dennis, a historic preservation consultant for In the Field Consulting, said that changing the roof could affect whether the building could receive historical classification.

“With everything that you remove, you are going to take away part of the historical value of that building,” said Dennis. “We are working to get the historical center and the library on the historical register, and anything we can do to keep the value of those buildings is key.”

Town board member and Historical Society president Charles Lustig said while there may be funding to preserve the roof if the building were to be named as a historical site, the town needs to move on the matter before that happened.

“We need to do something with the roof,” said Lustig. “It’s a matter of we can get funding later on, but we do not have the funds right now to preserve the building until that time. I understand the passion to keep the slate roof, but we can only do what we can afford to do.”

The board tabled the request for bids until a later date in order to look at alternatives.

In other regular business: • The board was deadlocked on a vote to go out for bid on a new tandem truck, plow and box for the town highway department.

The vote tied at 2-2.

• The board passed the new town dog ordinance, which was required after the state said that towns would now have the responsibility on the matter.

• The board set the dates for the end of the year (Dec. 27, 6 p.m.) and the organizational meeting (Jan. 3, 6 p.m.).

InBrief Caroling Cub Scouts in Keeseville KEESEVILLE — On Sunday Dec. 12, Pack 5 Cub Scouts of Keeseville will be caroling throughout the town starting at 2:30 p.m. at the Keeseville Fire Station. The Scouts will than go up Hill Street to Keeseville Country Gardens and than to the downtown area ending back at the fire station. The Scouts are looking forward to spreading some Holiday Cheer!

Social Services Fraud Unit announce arrest of Port Henry Man PORT HENRY — John Maye, age 46 of Port Henry, has been charged with 5 counts of offering a false instrument for filing 1st degree, class E felonies and 4 counts of Welfare Fraud 5th degree, class “A” misdemeanors. It is alleged he defrauded the Home Energy Assistance Program of $2,350 between 2006 and 2010 by submitting applications containing false statements. He will be arraigned on Dec. 16. 2010 before Town Justice William Garrison at the Town Hall, Elizabethtown, New York.

Sea Lamprey control improves Lake Champlain fisheries

ESSEX — The Lake Champlain Fish and Wildlife Management Cooperative is reporting unprecedented success resulting from the ongoing sea lamprey control program. The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are working together to improve and manage the fisheries of Lake Champlain. As a result of this program, the number and size of lake trout and salmon in the lake are increasing. This is great news. PLATTSBURGH — The editor of the Plattsburgh Press Republican will retire at year ’s end following a career that spanned nearly four decades.

According to a release issued by the newspaper, 65-year-old Bob Grady joined the newspaper as a general-assignment reporter after graduating from Plattsburgh State in 1972.

Over the years, he’s served as regional editor, city editor and managing editor before replacing Editor Jim Dynko in 2006.

Grady has been cited for excellence in reporting, writing, editorials and headlines by United Press International, the Associated Press and the New York Association of Newspaper Publishers.

In Wednesday’s release, Publisher Bob Parks said a decision on a replacement for Grady awaits a national search, per company policy.

“It has been my honor to know and work with Bob Grady for the past 10 years,” Parks said. “I thank him for sharing his time and talent with our community.”

Parks said Grady will continue to contribute to the paper after retirement as a member of the newspaper ’s Editorial Board, with the designation editor emeritus.

Personnel from the Cooperative treated five rivers in the Lake Champlain Basin with the lampricide (TFM) in September. Observation of larval lamprey mortality and other data indicate treatments on all five rivers were highly successful. Further improvements to the fisheries are expected over the next four years as more larval lamprey fail to become parasites.

Data collected this fall indicate that the number of sea lamprey wounds on trout and landlocked Atlantic salmon continue to decline.

Maroun talks tough about NCCC contracts, could be headed to court

By Jon Alexander denpubs@denpubs.com Tupper Lake Franklin County Legislator Paul Maroun had some tough words for North Country Community College and his Essex County counterparts Dec. 8.

Essex County supervisors ratified a threeyear contract between NCCC and its civil service employees Tuesday, Dec. 7 that would grant three percent raises retroactive to 2010 and allow existing employees to continue not contributing to their health insurance.

And Maroun said the votes to ratify the deal simply aren’t there on the Franklin County Board of Legislators.

“I think that their negotiators have to start getting real and understand that those things just aren’t happening right now,” he said. “I can tell you, when we start negotiat-

ing with the county, that 3.5 percent will not even be considered.”

Like Essex County Chairman Randy Douglas – who continued to oppose the contract – Maroun argues that it isn’t appropriate to approve pay raises for college employees while insisting on no raises for county employees and requiring them to contribute 10 percent toward their health insurance costs.

“How in good conscience now, can I okay a contract with a raise, no or low-pay health insurance contribution and not offer anything like that to my employees,” he said.

The Essex County Board of Supervisors approved the contract after learning it may have violated the state Public Employees Fair Employment Act when it torpedoed the deal earlier this year.

Essex County supervisors worried that the budget-neutral item could cost the county thousands in litigation expenses if the coun-

ty’s ability to kill a good-faith deal was challenged.

But believing county oversight of the largely locally-funded college is legal, Maroun is ready to fight it out.

“If what they think is true over there is – which I’ve never heard before – let them take it to court,” he said. “According to what I’ve read and what our attorney tells us, we have to ratify the contract.”

And he took a shot at the Essex County board in the process.

“I’m a little ashamed of my brethren over in Essex County. They waited until after the election to bring this up and pass it,” he

By Jon Alexander denpubs@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — Swirling rumors that supervisors were poised to remove Essex County Manager Dan Palmer from his position proved to be without substance Tuesday, Dec. 7 as the county board overwhelmingly backed his bi-annual reappointment.

For an hour and 40 minutes, supervisors were sequestered in executive session debating Palmer ’s fate, as the county’s top administrator paced back and forth between his office and the board chambers.

But when supervisors reconvened, nothing but support was voiced for the county manager.

Roby Politi is supervisor of the town of North Elba and vice chair of the county board.

“I for one can not make business decisions without up to date and relevant information in a timely manner. The information that we receive – from the Moriah Shock report, the budget deficit report, the county manager reports – are all done in a timely manner with relevant information,” he said. “They allow each of you to make a decision, regardless.”

Politi said although he doesn’t always agree with Palmer on the issues, the manager ’s willingness to provide objective analysis is vital to county operations.

said. “I think Tim Burpoe is going to bring it up, but I’ve talked to most of the legislators and this is not going to pass.”

Franklin County District 7 Legislator Tim Burpoe has also expressed concern that the votes may not be there to ratify the contract.

The contract ratification is expected to come before Franklin County legislators in the coming weeks. Because it had been torpedoed by Essex County, the contract didn’t see the Franklin County floor in September.

The deal would require only new-hires to contribute 8 percent toward their health insurance premiums.

PLATTSBURGH — Police arrested Chad Willis, 38, Plattsburgh, Dec. 3, for allegedly breaking into his neighbor ’s room at the Beacon Motel.

Numerous supervisors lauded Palmer as a wealth of information who is willing to push for the unpopular decisions for the good of county taxpayers.

The county manager job pays $98,000 annually. Palmer receives an additional $19,000 to manage the county’s informational systems.

Five of the 18 supervisors voted to oust Palmer, each giving different reasons.

Finance Committee Chairman Tom Scozzafava has repeatedly gone head-to-head with Palmer, particularly about the use of more fund balance to pay down county taxes and the future of the Horace Nye Nursing home.

Scozzafava said he doesn’t believe the position is necessary and that the county chairman could handle many of its current duties.

Seeking to pare-down an ever increasing budget gap, Palmer targeted non-mandated items like the nursing home and county fish hatchery for elimination.

Palmer said he was humbled by the support and noted that he was confident that although he was facing the criticism from some supervisors, he had the backing of the majority of the county board.

“I put 100 percent into what I do. I was very much moved by some of the comments by the board members,” he said. “It was somewhat of a good day.”

Study: Hospitals drive local economies State cuts threaten health care?

By Chris Morris denpubs@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — A report published this week by a statewide health care advocacy organization declares that hospitals are some of the most powerful economic engines for communities in the North Country.

The study shows that statewide, hospitals employ nearly 687,000 New Yorkers and generate $108 billion in economic activity, accounting for 9.4 percent of the “gross state product.”

Area leaders and hospital officials said this week they plan to cite the report as they seek to influence the policies of Governor-elect Andrew Cuomo when he takes office in January.

William Van Slyke of the Healthcare Association of New York State said a breakdown of the numbers in his group’s report indicates that North Country hospitals account for more than 12,000 jobs and generate $1.4 billion in economic activity.

“Hospitals, in the whole of the North Country and across the state, are incredibly powerful economic anchors that are at risk.”

Van Slyke said the public understands the value of hospitals when it comes to delivering critical services – but often taxpayers and lawmakers overlook the formidable economic impact of health care facilities in rural communities.

“Especially in communities up in the North Country where, aside from some of the state Department of Correctional Services facilities, hospitals are probably the biggest employers in the entire region,” he said.

While hospitals enjoy lead-dog status in the North Country’s economic hierarchy, they’re also one of the state’s biggest expenses.

In just three years, health care providers in New York have suffered upwards of $5.3 billion in Medicaid cuts and an additional loss of $13 billion in federal Medicare funding.

Van Slyke says hospitals and health care providers are starved for capital and becoming increasingly fragile.

“If the legislature and the incoming governor decide they’re just going to keep cutting across the board, it’s going to imperil these facilities and it’s going to result in lost health care services for sure,” he said. “But it also results in lost jobs. That means more people leaving the area and less opportunity. That’s something we need to be aware of.”

State Assemblywoman Janet Duprey said this week she doesn’t need to be told how important hospitals are to the communities she represents. The Republican’s district spans across northern New York and is home to three major health care facilities – the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, the Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone, and the Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh.

Duprey bristles at the mention of Gov. David Paterson, who orchestrated major health care cuts in his 2010 executive budget.

“For whatever reason, the Paterson administration did not understand the issues surrounding health care in the North Country,” she said.

She adds that lawmakers downstate don’t fully appreciate the complexities of providing health care in the rural north.

“We continue to fight that battle of having people from the city – particularly New York City, but other metropolitan areas as well – understand that we have 50 to 60 miles between our hospitals,” Duprey said. “It’s not as easy as if somebody has an issue with one hospital, they can walk across the street or a few blocks down the road to another and get service.”

But despite a rough stretch for the health care industry, officials are expressing a cautious optimism that Governor-elect Andrew Cuomo will take a different approach to health care funding as he begins drafting his first executive budget early next year.

Duprey says Cuomo appears to be giving the North Country a louder voice in the conversation.

“I’m pleased that he’s included some North Country people on his transition team,” she said. “I think the message will come across that at least he’s listening to us, so much as he’ll consider the people that get appointed to positions and what their input is and where they stand on issues.”

Van Slyke said that Cuomo has called for a fundamental redesign of the state’s Medicaid system. The Healthcare Association of New York State thinks Cuomo is right – and a task force of the group’s membership has sent the incoming governor a body of specific recommendations aimed at reforming the system.

Assemblywoman Duprey notes that the battle over health care funding in the North Country fits into a larger conversation regarding the region’s reliance on the state for fiscal solvency – a conversation that includes parks, visitors centers, prisons, and schools.

That’s why Duprey hopes that Cuomo isn’t just paying lip service to the North Country – she says he needs to “walk the walk” come January.

LAKE PLACID - With Andrew Cuomo less than a month out from moving into the Governor ’s mansion, the battle for his heart and mind regarding Adirondack policy is heating up.

On Tuesday, Dec. 7, Karen Moreau – president of the newly formed property rights advocacy organization, the Land and Liberty Foundation – lambasted the region’s state regulatory agencies in a New York Post op-ed.

In the piece, Moreau asserts that Adirondack Park Agency and state Department of Environmental Conservation regulations are strangling the life out of Adirondack communities. Moreau is slated to appear on New York Post Albany Bureau Chief Fred Dicker ’s radio show this morning.

She said Dec. 9 that although the timing of the property rights onslaught wasn’t intended to correlate with the lead-up to Cuomo’s inauguration, the advocacy and defense fund organization hopes it will help direct his agenda as it relates to the park.

“It really wasn’t intended. It just happened to come about that way,” she said. “Although the timing is very fortuitous. Obviously, from the tone of my op-ed, myself and others are hoping that Governor-elect Cuomo will take a very close look at what is happening in the Adirondacks.”

Titled “Adirondack Blues,” the op-ed reiterates the claim that the APA is under direct

control of green groups and has instituted a – quote – “de facto ban” on development in the park.

And she hopes the public campaign will get the governor-elect’s ear.

“I do believe Cuomo is a serious and hardworking person and I have to assume he is paying very close attention to what is happening in the Adirondacks,” she said. “The Adirondacks are somewhat a reflection of a good portion of upstate New York. Although the Adirondacks – in comparison – frankly, is on life support.”

Moreau even claims the state’s failed effort to sell Camp Gabriels is a direct result of potential developers fearing the APA’s – quote – “wrath.”

And she thinks change is needed within the regulatory agencies, particularly the APA. “New leadership is needed. The person has to be someone who cares about the individual who is standing before them, and frankly, gives as much deference to them as they would any environmental organization,” she said. “I know I’m not alone in my opinion that a number of environmental organizations have exerted a great degree of influence over the agency.”

For his part, Cuomo has pledged to slash the size of state government and continue Paterson’s review of state regulatory bodies.

Cuomo’s transition team includes several members of the environmental community and Republican state Senator and vocal APA critic Betty Little.

RAY BROOK —Officials with the state Department of Environmental Conservation have urged outdoor enthusiasts to exercise caution this winter as they venture into the backcountry.

Environmental conservation officials said this week that skiers, hikers and snowshoers need to make sure they are adequately prepared before heading into the Adirondack mountains.

DEC spokesman David Winchell said winter conditions can be perilous as snow cover is more than a few feet deep in higher elevations.

Winchell observed that visitors to the eastern High Peaks are required to use snowshoes or cross-country skis for safety, while visitors to other regions of the Adirondacks are encouraged to do the same.

Being ill-prepared, Winchell said, can lead to treacherous situations.

“The biggest problem is people not being properly prepared,” he said. “Mainly, they don’t carry or wear the proper clothing, don’t dress in layers, and aren’t drinking water or

eating food to keep their energy levels up.”

Another common mistake is planning accordingly, Winchell says. Often, visitors to the High Peaks don’t leave themselves enough time to complete their trip.

“When you’re in the snow, it takes additional time to get to your destination and back,” he said. “Then you end up getting caught out in the dark.”

Winchell says “post-holing” is a major concern this time of year. Post-holing occurs when hikers break through the surface of snow on a trail. When snow is deep, post-holing can lead to injuries or entrapment, Winchell says.

Skis and snowshoes prevent post-holing, Winchell adds.

“Certainly, having skis or snowshoes significantly decrease the amount of energy it takes to walk through the snow,” he said. “That’s a big plus.”

Winchell notes that many people suffer dehydration not only in the summer, but during the winter months, he said.

ECH trims tree with donations

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — When most people trim the tree, they do so with lights, ornaments and some tinsel.

“The Elizabethtown Community Hospital Auxiliary has established a way of donating winter clothing items to children and families in need,” said Hooper, who is the director of community relations for ECH. “It’s a great way to help families who may need new winter items and a chance to give back from the community.”

The tree is located in the hospital’s main lobby.

“The public is encouraged to adorn the tree with newly-purchased or handmade hats, mittens and scarves,” Hooper said.

“People who need the items are encouraged to take them, and there is no charge for

the items.”

Auxiliary members thought that the mitten tree, which was constructed for them by Dale Boardman of Willsboro, a 4-foot tall tree with “branches” that hold the winter clothing items, was an ideal way to help out those who use the hospital.

“The hospital is a place where many different people come together, including people who are in a position to be very generous and people who appreciate their generosity,”

said Auxiliary member Christine Benedict.

“Our idea is that people give to the tree, and it will give to others.”

The public is encouraged to donate new, unused winter items through February.

“They can do so by visiting the hospital’s lobby and simply hanging the items on the tree,” said Hooper.

Teen faces grand larceny charge for stealing jewelry CHAZY — Eighteen-year-old Dillon Wood was arrested Dec. 6 in connection with the weekend theft of about $1,200 worth of jewelry.

The West Chazy teen was also suspected of vandalizing a park last summer.

Chazy-based State Police said most of the jewelry has been recovered, however, Wood is facing a charge of fourth-degree grand larceny.

He is expected to appear in Chazy Town Court Dec. 14 to face the latest allegations.

Westport student excels in Greek study group

By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com PORT HENRY — It’s all Greek to Levo Freeman. Which is fine with the Moriah Central School senior.

“It’s so cool,” said Freeman, who is part of the Ancient Greek Study Group at the school.

“We’re learning things that will help us in college and the rest of our lives.”

The study group, under the tutelage of John Roemischer, is learning the ancient Greek language and culture.

“This is helping us learn higher level vocabulary,” said Dylan Scozzafava, a Moriah freshman. “As we get into more sophisticated learning we see the advantages of knowing Greek.”

English is a hybrid language, Roemischer explained. About a quarter of the English language has its roots in Greek with about half coming from latin and the remainder from Saxonian/German tongues.

“In geometry we see the word perimeter and find that the Greek meaning is to ‘measure around” or ‘enclose’ an object,” Roemischer said. “Periscope, peristalsis, periphery and many other English terms beginning with the letters p-e-r-i are rooted in this same term.

Many terms in the sciences are rooted in Greek.”

The study group includes five Moriah students and one from Westport. Freeman, Scozzafava, Jonathan Brassard, Cole Gaddor and

Kyle Gifaldi are from Moriah. Scarlette Moore is from Westport.

“They are the most brilliant students in their schools,” Roemischer smiled. “I greatly enjoy my time with them.”

Roemischer is a retired professor at the City College of New York. He has lived in Westport the past 40 years, spending 19 years commuting to his job in New York City. Since retiring he has also worked at SUNY-Plattsburgh.

The Greek study group happened by chance.

“When I was 11 I really liked Greek mythology and wanted to learn ancient Greek,” Moore explained. “One day my grandmother met Mr. Roemischer in the post office and asked him if he happened to know any Greek.

It took off from there.”

Roemischer began working with Moore.

One day he visited his daughter who was then teaching math at Moriah.

“Her students asked me to help with their algebra and I couldn’t,” he said. “But I them them I could teach them Greek. I was surprised when some said they wanted to learn.”

Besides teaching Greek, Roemischer is now working on a paper studying the concepts of violence in the Old and New Testaments that he plans to present at Oxford University in England. Moore is helping him with his research.

“She will likely be the youngest Westport student ever to be published in a scholarly journal,” Roemischer remarked.

Holiday Breakfast Casserole

Ingredients

Preparation

• 2 packages (12 oz. each) Johnsonville Original Breakfast Sausage Links • 6 English muffins cut into 1inch cubes • 1/4 cup butter, melted • 1 cup (4 oz.) shredded cheddar cheese • 1 cup (4 oz.) shredded

mozzarella cheese • 1/2 cup onion, chopped • 1/2 cup red pepper, chopped • 12 eggs • 2 cups milk • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon pepper • 1/4 cup bacon bits

1. Cook sausage according to package directions. Cool slightly; cut into 1/4-inch slices.

2. In a greased 13 x 9-inch baking dish, layer half the English muffin cubes and half the cooked sausage. Repeat layers. Drizzle with butter and top with the cheese, onion and red pepper.

3. In a large bowl, combine eggs, milk, salt and pepper. Pour over casserole. Sprinkle with bacon. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

4. Remove from the refrigerator 30 minutes before baking. Uncover and bake at 350° F for 45 to 50 minutes, or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. Let stand 5 minutes.

Marvin said the only way that the family would get that opportunity is if the donor family wanted to find out where the organ went.

“We’ve discussed that, but there is a very stiff protocol and the hospital can’t tell you

www.thevalleynews.org anything,” said Marvin. “If the donor family opts that they want to find out, then there is a whole set of practices that they have to go through and it is all run through the hospital.”

Marvin said it had been an exciting week for families of patients at the Children’s Hospital in Boston, Mass., as two other children waiting on the transplant list also received the news they had been waiting for.

“The night before, a 21-month old from Malone received a transplant, and a teenage girl got one a few days earlier,” Marvin said.

“The tempo has really been up here because there had been a dry spell for heart transplants and now they have had three in 10

days.”

Brock’s surgery was performed by Dr. Betsy Blume, and Marvin said that the procedure went smoothly.

“It all happened so quickly once we found out the heart was on its way,” said Marvin.

“They brought him in around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday to prep and they made the incision into his chest at about 4:50 a.m. They had him on an external pump at about 5:30 a.m., the heart was in the hospital at about 5:45 a.m. and once they had it in, it started beating on its own. Everything really went flawlessly — it was a really perfect case scenario.”

Marvin said that he was in the Intensive Care Unit when his son first woke up after the surgery, and was surprised by the first thing he heard.

“Brock said, ‘Do they have the heart put in yet,’” said Marvin. “I told him that it was and that the surgery was over.”

Marvin said Brock was also trying to get used to a new reality, one without a defibrillator attached to his heart.

“We were moving him in the bed and he started shaking,” said Marvin. “I asked him what was wrong and he said that he did not want the defibrillator to go off again. I looked over at the monitors and told him that his heart rate was at 80 and he didn’t even have a defibrillator in him any more.

Even though his heart is in, his brain hasn’t figured it all out yet.”

Marvin said as of Tuesday, Dec. 14, Brock was expected to remain in ICU for two more

December 18, 2010 days and eventually would be able to leave the hospital.

“We will get an apartment here for about six weeks so they can continue to monitor him and make sure that the heart is not being rejected,” said Marvin. “At around eight weeks, if all goes well, he should get the green light to come home and would only have to go down once a week for testing.”

Marvin said while they had been waiting for the transplant, they got a chance to meet almost everyone in their wing at the Boston Children’s Hospital.

“You get to know all of the other families and you all get close,” said Marvin. “Someone gets a heart, and everyone is so happy for that person. You know that they have received that gift and that you are that much closer to yours.”

Marvin said the joy that he felt when he saw others receive their needed heart was something that helped him after his son’s surgery.

“You walk by the rooms with people still waiting and you almost feel guilty that your son got one,” said Marvin. “But then you remember how you felt when you saw someone else receive a transplant and you know they feel the same way.”

Marvin added the joy that he and others felt was only possible because someone made the choice to be an organ donor.

“I really want to stress to people how important it is to be an organ donor,” said Marvin. “It means so much to so many people, including our family.”

Brock Marvin, 17, underwent a successful heart transplant surgery Dec. 11 at the Children’s Hospital in Boston, Mass. Marvin had been diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, a genetic disorder that caused his heart to grow four times the size of a normal heart and pump blood at a rate significantly lower than the average person. Doctors are now optomistic that he will have a full recovery.

Brock surrounded by celebrities prior to surgery

BOSTON, Mass. — Leading up to the biggest day of his young life, Brock Marvin had plenty to do.

Marvin, who underwent a successful heart transplant on Saturday, Dec. 11, had the chance to meet players from two Boston professional sports teams and had the chance to address medical students at the Harvard Medical School.

“Once a year, they select a couple of patients to speak with the students,” said his father, Walter “Smitty” Marvin. “They asked him many questions and he kept them on the edge of their seats. The professor who runs the program caught up to him afterwards and said in over 20 years he thought this was the best he had ever seen, and that this session between patient and future doctors is the most remembered experience most students have.”

In all, 160 medical students attended the event, which Marvin said was one of the most memorable experiences that he had leading up to the transplant.

Earlier in the week, Brock had the chance to meet with players from the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association and the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball.

“There was seven or eight players that came to the hospital,” said Marvin. “There were 40 or so kids who knew who they were and the players talked with the kids and sang holiday songs with them. The next day there were some guys from the Red Sox and Brock had the chance to talk to them.”

Brock got the chance to take pictures with several of the athletes, including one of the biggest men in the NBA. “He took a picture with Shaquille O’Neal, and it was amazing,” said Marvin. “He dwarfs everyone that was there, even the other players, and they are all big guys.”

On Tuesday, Marvin recieved yet another unexpected surprise when he received a get well card from legendary golfer Arnold Palmer, who he met during a trip through the Make-A-Wish Foundation in February.

Kristin Kimball finds it’s a ‘Dirty Life,’ but someone has to do it

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com ESSEX — When Kristin Kimball got her first taste of life on a smalltown farm, she found it was very different from life in Manhattan — to say the least.

“It was a shock in many ways,” admitted Kimball. “I was a city person so, physical work was completely new to me.”

However, Kimball didn’t just go from being a writer in New York City to Mrs. Green Jeans over night.

“I got really interested in the small farming movement. So, I started interviewing young farmers in the Hudson Valley,” explained Kimball.

Eventually, she made her way to a “young, intelligent, tall, handsome farmer” in State College, Pa., and fell madly in love.

“First with farming and then with him,” she said, adding her soon-tobe husband, Mark, was “a close second.”

The two uprooted themselves and found a new home in Essex County, establishing Essex Farm, a 500-acre

farm, in 2003. Though her husband was an experienced farmer, Kimball — who grew up in the moderatelysized Central New York town of Rome — admits she was not.

“I felt stupid pretty much every day of that first year,” said Kimball.

“It was incredibly humbling, incredibly satisfying work, but darn hard.”

Converting from a hard-wired metropolitan to a hard-working farmer was something that Kimball found to be good fodder for a book.

So, she wrote one — “The Dirty Life: On Farming, Food, and Love,” which documents Kimball’s transformative first year and the trials and tribulations of building a sustainable farm in the Adirondacks.

“It is the story of what it was like for me to leave my life in the city and go through the sort of satisfying but extremely difficult process of becoming a farmer,” she said. “It’s about what it’s like to change your life radically and really commit to a person, a place and a way of life.”

One of the biggest changes, she said, was going from a woman who would stay out late to a mother of

two that would be up with the dawn.

“I used to come home at 4 o’clock in the morning and now I get up at 4 o’clock in the morning,” she said, laughing. “So, I’ve become a morning person.”

Kimball’s new 273-page book — published by Scribner — also chronicles her learning how to milk cows, catch pigs, and live with a man who is “exasperating and incredibly intelligent, worthy and romantic.”

“A lot of the book is how both farming and marriage are long-term projects that require patience and hard work,” she said.

While Kimball admits it can be tough being a farmer in this day and age, it’s the support of family, friends and neighbors that make farming worthwhile.

“Our community has been nothing but supportive of us and we’ve been able to farm exactly the way that we want to farm,” she said. “It’s a tough way to make a living, but it’s a great way to live.”

Adirondack Coast unveils Destination Master Plan

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The Adirondack Coast Visitors and Convention Bureau has big plans for the North Country.

During a presentation of the bureau’s new Destination Master Plan at Clinton Community College Dec. 10, members of the general public were given a look at the future of the region as painted by a strategic tourism planning committee comprised of local community leaders.

The 25-page document outlines how the North Country can capitalize on its reputation for being a Mecca for outdoor recreation enthusiasts and on its rich history — particularly in its role during the War of 1812.

Michele Powers, director of the Adirondack Coast Visitors and Convention Bureau, said its was clearly laid out in discussions with committee members that there hasn’t been enough done to promote the history of the area, especially in regard to being the home of the Battle of Plattsburgh and Battle of Valcour.

“We’re going to turn the volume up,” said Powers.

The plans calls for an increased and aggressive focus on marketing the area for its historic sites and putting yearround attention on the region during the early 19th century. One facet of the plan, is a particularly audacious one, said Powers, but a cornerstone on which tourists can be drawn here.

“We are looking at rebuilding the entire British and American fleets from the War of 1812,” said Powers. “This is

a big one.”

Though the proposal is one that would cost millions of dollars to develop, Powers said the idea is in its infancy and would involve support from many sources.

“We are in the early stages of this and a lot of it’s going to take a lot of study and planning,” explained Powers.

“We’re applying for a grant that could really help infuse capital into some of these projects and get us off the ground.”

However, Powers said the bureau and the planning committee realize grant funding won’t be a reliable source for capital.

“We can’t live grant to grant. We know that some of these projects are going to need to be sustainable on their own,” she said. “We have to come up with a business plan to make that happen and bring the right people in.”

Powers said she and the planning committee are hoping to expand on the work that is done annually by an “army of volunteers who kill themselves to create a fantastic two to four-day event” each September.

“The Battle of Plattsburgh weekend is fantastic. The problem with it is that last word — it’s a weekend,” said Powers, who said a year-round look at history, including encampments, guided tours and the like are part of the master plan.

Keith Herkalo, president of the Battle of Plattsburgh Association, which oversees the Battle of Plattsburgh Weekend each year, said he welcomes the boldness of the plan.

“It’s an American story that needs to be told and the North Country business community is just now waking up to that fact,” said Herkalo, who added tourism could rely heavily on the region’s history. “We’re hopeful that the business community is going to put their shoulders to this moving forward.”

Local businessman Steve Carpenter, a member of the planning committee, said he’s on board, knowing how important the plan will be to the region.

“This is going to affect the whole county. It’s going to involve everybody,” said Carpenter. “Everyone is going to get rewards from this ... We’re all going to pull together and we’re all going to win at this.”

Bob Smith, president of Nine Platt Hospitality Group and also a member of the planning committee, agreed.

Smith added the participation from people overseas who have a vested interest in the history of the region, in the United Kingdom, for example, would also be key to seeing the plan through.

“We believe that the community, once they see the plan, the vision, will be ready to invest in it,” said Smith.

Powers said the committee’s next move will be to reconvene in January to break out into various committees, with each committee member given an action item on which to follow up.

I saw Lorrie painting Santa Claus on everything

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com KEESEVILLE — Lorrie Mandigo likes drawing Santa Clauses. So much, in fact, she’s developed quite the pastime out of it.

Mandigo has been hand-painting likenesses of the jolly, old elf for the last four years, making use of whatever canvas she can — no matter how unconventional it may be.

“I’ve painted Santas on old medicine bottles, flat irons, ironing boards, silverware, light bulbs,” said Mandigo. “I’ve painted on all different kinds of surfaces.”

What Mandigo likes most about painting on the not-so-normal canvases is how her artwork provides new life to items that could otherwise find their way into the landfill.

“I really like to paint on things that are recycled or found or that would be thrown away otherwise,” she said.

However, Mandigo’s favorite piece

to transform is one that naturally take the shape of the ideal Kris Kringle.

“I love to paint on gourds. They’re just fat and they look like Santas,” she said.

When Mandigo moved to the North Country earlier this year from eastern Texas, she brought with her a harvest of more than 1,000 gourds she had grown in her garden, giving her an ample supply of future Santas to create.

“Gourds grow pretty well in Texas,” she said, laughing.

Mandigo also prefers cypress knees for her artwork — roots of cypress trees that are native to the swamps of Louisiana, Florida and Mississippi.

“They’re the actual roots of the tree but they grow up in a very cone-like shape,” she explained. “I discovered them when I was living on the state line of Texas and Louisiana. Tree farmers cut them down and crafters can harvest them and boil their bark off to work with them. They’re really love-

ly.”

Most recently, Mandigo’s sister, who works at the Northwoods School in Lake Placid, encouraged her to paint on hockey pucks, getting the idea from the school’s reputation for being associated with the sport.

“So, that’s the latest,” said Mandigo, laughing. “I’d still have to say my favorites are my gourds, though. Especially the ones I’ve grown myself.”

Though Mandigo is also an accomplished artist when it comes to painting murals and other works, painting Santa Clauses is her true passion.

“It’s the only thing that kind of bubbles out of me naturally,” she said. “I just appreciate the season. And, maybe it’s because my father makes the perfect Santa Claus when he grows out his beard. Santa is just the symbol of happiness, family and being jolly.

Everyone loves Santa.”

Multi-million dollar Laurentian project moves forward

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Laurentian Aerospace Corporation has secured funding it needs to take the next step in establishing a presence in the town of Plattsburgh.

Andrew Edwards, chief financial officer and senior vice president of finance for Laurentian, announced Verdant Capital Group LLC will invest, alongside the management group, the capital required to allow Laurentian to begin an estimated $175 million project to construct a state-of-theart maintenance repair and overhaul facility for widebody aircraft at the Plattsburgh International Airport.

“We could not be happier with the partnership that we struck with Verdant,” said Edwards. “They share our vision of making this a world-class facility.

The securing of financing is considered the next step in the process for Laurentian locating a facility in the town, said Edwards, which has been a process that dates back to 2006.

The closing of the financing is subject to a number of conditions, said Edwards, including “Verdant’s completion of final due diligence, the execution of definitive agreements and the absence of any material adverse change in the financial markets.”

However, Edwards said Verdant and Laurentian are “confident” the transaction will be successfully completed on or before March 1, with construction of a single hangar facility expected to begin in April. Construction would take approximately 18 months after necessary engineering work is completed, said Andrews.

The new facility is expected to employ approximately 900 people within the first two years after construction is completed, said Andrews. The highest paid employees would likely be Federal Aviation Administration-certified mechanics, he added, who could earn somewhere between $75,000 and $80,000.

Rep. William L. Owens, D-Plattsburgh, applauded the efforts of all involved for getting Laurentian to this milestone.

“If there’s an event that’s going to change the face of Plattsburgh, it is this event,” said Owens. “I’m happy for Laurentian, but, in truth, I’m most happy for Plattsburgh.”

Edwards said he is enthusiastic about the progress made so far, but will celebrate when closing on the project’s financing is finalized in March.

“The time for major kudos to all of the people who are involved will be at the closing dinner,” said Edwards. “I’ve got to tell you, after four years, it’s going to be some doozy when we get there.”

Fear of the Forest A

lthough a majority of current day civilization has learned to appreciate the benefits of nature and the natural world, it wasn’t always the case. From the earliest of times, societies have sought protection from the dangers of the natural world through the telling of tales and legends that were intended to ingrain children with a basic fear of the woods.

From Goldie Locks to Little Red Riding Hood to Sleepy Hollow’s Headless Horseman and continuing through such movies as Deliverance, the Blair Witch Project and The Village, mankind has conditioned children to fear the woods throughout the centuries.

Admittedly, the woods can be a mysterious and foreboding place and at times, it is only natural to fear what we hear but can’t see, especially at night. However, our greatest fears are the noises that come from creatures unknown. Often, these are the creatures that rest comfortably in our collective imagination.

In our mind’s eye, the forest conceals a host of wild animals, witches, demons, and a host of serial killers that lurk in the darkness, awaiting the innocent. This process plays on fears that already exist in most of us, it is also known as the boogieman complex.

Increasingly, American parents have grown afraid of letting their children to play in the yard, bicycle to school or hike in the woods, even though such irrational fears are not supported by the evidence or statistics. For many, the woods are a wild place that is unbound by man-made rules or codes. Sadly, many people live in fear of these wild and untamed elements.

The forest can conceal a variety of threats, both actual and imagined. Although it is a place where a man or child can become lost, never be found again, such incidents are a rarity. An unfounded fear of the forest is known as hylophobia and it affects far more people than most of us would ever expect.

Nyctohylophobia is the much more common fear and foreboding of journeying in the woods at night. It is a sense that you are not alone and it is a fear that can be debilitating for some. It is an affliction that extends far beyond the typical shivers and goose bumps that are expected after an evening of ghost stories around the campfire.

It is understandable that we have a greater fear of the unknown, than of the things that are known to us.

An overzealous imagination can create monsters far beyond any known to exist in the natural world, and as society continues to spiral into the depths of natural detachment; it is easy to understand the growing fear of the woods. We fear most, the things we least understand.

While hylophobia is largely an unfounded fear, there are at least a few psychological afflictions with a rational basis in the Great North Woods. These maladies would have to include Agrizoophobia, a fear of wild animals and Entomophobia, a fear of insects. Anyone spending time in the Adirondacks during black fly season could easily justify becoming an Entomophobiac.

Likewise, many local residents surely suffer from Chionophobia, at some point in their life. Around these parts, Chionophobia, an intense fear of snow is an understated reality, at almost anytime of the year.

conducted for the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies offers ample evidence to alleviate such apprehensions. Researchers funded through a Multistate Conservation Grant of the Sport Fish and Wildlife Restoration Program, uncovered a wide range of benefits that can be attributed to spending time in the open air and learning outside.

The study suggests “a meaningful engagement with nature as a child has a direct correlation with involvement in environmental issues in the future, which should be of great interest as communities look for the next generation of environmental leaders.”

Additional research reveals that “people who participate in outdoor activities tend to be happier than those who do not and that active living may lead to a healthier lifestyle, based on the Leisure Trends Index” while “spending time in the open air and learning outside has also proven to increase students’ ability to think creatively and improve problem-solving skills.”

The study also found that “students who play and learn in outdoor settings perform better on tests, have higher grade point averages (GPAs), cause fewer classroom disruptions”. It also found considerable evidence that “outdoor adventure programs can impact positively on young people’s attitudes, beliefs and self-perceptions.”

In general, the research indicates that among the benefits of outdoor education is an increase in self-concept domains such as independence, confidence, self-efficacy, and self-understanding.

Additional benefits include “enhanced psychological well-being; an increased ability to overcome challenges; a positive impact on leadership competencies; enhanced decision-making skills, general problem solving competencies, academic achievement and academic self-concept. “ Time spent outdoors also resulted in “an increase in personality dimensions such as assertiveness, emotional stability, achievement motivation, internal focus of control, and maturity and reductions in aggression and neurosis.

It was also shown to improve mental strength and interpersonal dimensions such as social competence, co-operation and interpersonal communication skills.”

Regarding aspects of health, learning, and lifestyle, the study indicates that outdoor skills programs help to promote lifelong physical, emotional and spiritual well being.

According to the report, “a growing body of studies suggests that contact with nature is as important to children as good nutrition and adequate sleep: time spent outdoors correlates with increased physical activity and fitness in children; exposure to green space reduces crime, increases general wellbeing and the ability to focus; children as young as five have shown a significant reduction in the symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) when they are engaged in outdoor activities in natural settings.”

The positive benefits that the research reveals should offer ample evidence for students, and faculty to address professed fears of the forest.

Schroon Lake holds off Lady Warriors

The Willsboro and Schroon Lake varsity girls basketball teams had plenty of good looks, but nothing would fall until the Lady Warriors’ Amanda Mahoney scored the first basket of the game with 2:30 left in the first quarter.

But while Willsboro scored first, Schroon Lake scored more as they opened their season with a 40-35 victory Dec. 9.

“The shots were not going in, and that was the story of the first half for us,” said Lady Wildcats head coach Lee Silvernail. “I couldn’t believe we were getting the looks we did and nothing was falling.”

However, after the first quarter, Schroon Lake scored all 40 of their points, including a 21-point fourth quarter that saw the team play the final 1:39 with only four players due to foul trouble.

For the Warriors, the story was more about the free shots that they missed.

“When we played Seton to start the season, we missed 16 free throws and lost by six points,” said Warriors head coach Charlene Lobdell. “Tonight, we missed 19 free throws.

We threw the ball away too much and we missed free throws. Our defense is good, but we just need to get our offense going and stop turning the ball over.”

The Lady Wildcats were led by 21 points from Jocelyn Bowen and 13 points from Katelyn Rose. Ashley Subra scored four points and had four assists, while Gabe Harvey added two points in the win.

For the Warriors, Hannah Bruno added 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Mahoney scored eight points and grabbed 15 rebounds in the loss. Serene Holland scored five points, while Renee Marcotte scored 4 points, Kyli Swires three points and Renee Provost added two points.

LAKE PLACID — World championship bobsled and skeleton racing is coming to Lake Placid, N.Y. one year sooner than expected. Lake Placid and the Mt. Van Hoevenberg Olympic Sports Complex track were awarded the 2013 Worlds during the FIBT’s 2009 Congress, but switched races with St. Moritz, Switzerland which was scheduled to host the 2012 event.

“The change was primarily made because of team travel to Sochi, Russia for international training in 2013,” said Jim Goff, New York State Olympic Regional Development (ORDA) director of events, who attended a meeting in Calgary, Canada where the decision was made. “The FIBT and its nations felt that it would be easier for the teams to travel to Sochi for Olympic training from St. Moritz rather than from Lake Placid.”

As a concession for changing the races, the FIBT awarded Lake Placid World Cup events for 2013 and 2014. “That was an important part to this change, and the FIBT did everything that they could to make that happen.

I applaud them for that,” noted ORDA president/CEO Ted Blazer. “We wanted to be sure that Lake Placid remained on the World Cup calendar. This organization and everyone at the track is committed to providing the world’s best venue for international bobsled and skeleton racing and the international governing body recognizes that.”

While the exact dates for the 2012 world championships have not been set, the race is expected to be held in mid-February, 2012 on the 1,455 meter long course. The race’s slate

will include men’s two-man and four-man bobsled events, women’s two-person bobsled and men’s and women’s skeleton action.

Race fans won’t have to wait until 2012 to watch these athletes try to tame one of the world’s most technically demanding tracks.

Instead, the world’s best bobsled and skeleton athletes will be in Lake Placid, Dec. 1719, competing in the Viessmann FIBT World Cup bobsled/skeleton Lake Placid presented by Conceptum Logistics.

The event on the 20-curve course is the final stop on the four-race North American leg that has also taken the athletes back to the 2010 Olympic course in Whistler, Canada; Calgary, Canada and Park City, Utah. This event is also the final race before the holiday break and the start of the European swing.

The action begins Friday, Dec. 17, with the men’s and women’s skeleton events, followed by Saturday’s, Dec. 18, two-man and women’s bobsled races. The four-man race is slated for Sunday, Dec. 19. Daily Tickets are available for $8 for adults and $6 juniors and senior citizens. Anyone who brings a non-perishable food item for the Lake Placid Ecumenical food pantry will receive free entry. For tickets call the Olympic Sports Complex at 523-4436 or pick them up at the gate on event days.

Amanda Mahoney pulled down 11 boards and added 6 points in the win, while Hannah Bruno led all scorers with 11 points, including one from 3-point range. Renee Marcotte and Serena Holland added 7 points apiece, while Kyli Swires added 4 and Renee Provost, 2.

AuSABLE VALLEY — The Patriots cruised to an easy victory in the opening game of the Hoops for Hopes Tournament Dec. 8, defeating Willsboro 71-34.

Jordan Coolidge led the Patriot offense with 18 points, with teammate Brody Douglass close behind with 17 points and 8 boards.

Alex Hamel led the Warriors with a team high 12 points, followed by junior Dakota Sayward with 8.

Indian Lake/Long Lake 44 Lake Placid 34 LONG LAKE — It appeared as if Lake Placid had the game in hand Dec. 8, but let it slip away in the fourth quarter to a hot Orange team, led by senior Matt Rush who scored 19 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in a 44-34 win.

In the end, Carli Reynolds helped pace her team to a realtively easy victory behind a 20-point effort, including one from behind the arc. Reynolds also hauled in 6 rebounds.

Adding to the effort were Murphy Farrell and Allison Pine, who scored 6 points apiece.

Leading the Lumberjack scorers was Hunter Aldridge with 6 points and Carly Aldridge chipped in two.

Lake Placid 55 Moriah 18 MORIAH — Lake Placid had an easy go of it Dec. 8, defeating the lady Vikings 55-18 in in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference action.

Megan Riley had the hot hand for the Blue Bombers, dropping 22 points, including the games lone 3-pointer. Mackenzie Kemmerer added 10 points, Stephanie Murphy nine and Ayla Thompson eight.
