Mountain Lake Services names director

By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com PORT HENRY — A Moriah man has been named executive director of Mountain Lake Services.

Martin J. Nephew will lead the Port Henry-based agency. Mountain Lake Services is a not-for-profit organization serving more than 500 people with developmental disabilities and their families in Essex County.

Nephew replaces Dipanker “Dipu” Basu, who resigned Sept. 23 after being placed on administrative leave in August.

Nephew has been the agency’s chief financial officer since 2006. He joined Mountain Lake Services in 1992 as an accounting manager and has held several positions of increased responsibility throughout his tenure.

Nephew has also worked as an accounting manager at NYCO Minerals Inc. and received his bachelor of science degree in accounting from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.

“The mission of Mountain Lake Services is to enrich the lives of people with developmental disabilities, their families, and our communities,” reads a statement issued by

Mountain Lake Services officials have remained mum about the reasons for Basu’s departure.

Basu became executive director in 2001, after the death of founder Chuck Hayes.

Basu had been associate director.

His annual salary as executive director was listed as $186,000 in public filings with the IRS. Basu’s compensation, with benefits, is listed at $211,000.

Also placed on administrative leave in August was Mary Savage, the northern regional director for Mountain Lake Services.

Missing Elizabethtown woman found safe off Lincoln Pond Road. She was cold and possibly mildly hypothermic, but otherwise was healthy. She was carried to an ATV and transported out of the woods to ElizabethtownLewis Emergency ambulance. She was then transported to the Elizabethtown hospital for further medical evaluation.

A large force of searchers had begun efforts to locate Foster Wednesday afternoon. The group searched until midnight to no avail. The search then began again Thursday morning, but came to a successful conclusion shortly after starting.

More than a 100 people from 11 agencies and

organizations were involved in the search including: DEC Forest Rangers, DEC Environmental Conservation Police (including the K9 unit that located Ms. Foster), State Police (including their Aviation Unit), Homeland Security Aviation, Essex County Sheriff’s Department, Elizabethtown-Lewis Volunteer Fire Department, Westport Volunteer Fire Department, Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department, Search and Rescue of the Northern Adirondacks (SARNAK), Lower Adirondack Search and Rescue (LASAR) and Tri-state Search and Rescue and the Keene Volunteer Fire Department.

ELIZABETHTOWN — An Elizabethtown woman missing since noon Wednesday, Nov. 17 was found by searchers this following morning.

Nancy R. Foster, 76, who suffers from Alzheimer’s, had walked away from her home but was found in good condition, despite spending the night in the woods in near freezing temperatures.

Foster was found Thursday morning, Nov. 18 at 10 a.m. by DEC Environmental Conservation Police Officer Stephen delaRosa and his canine partner Gunner approximately one mile uphill from her residence at 44 Garondah Way

I

t will be about four to six weeks till we find out how we did on the written exam for EMT-Basic, which was held last week in Lewis. You'll be happy to know that there were two other people from Westport who took the exam. One of them, like me, had taken the class for the first time, while the other is an experienced EMS provider who was recertifying. Both are also firefighters. Other communities represented in the class included E'town, Essex, Keene Valley, Keeseville, Crown Point, Ti, Schroon Lake, and Newcombe. Many of those students are in their respective fire departments, too.

It felt strange to leave, knowing that class was over. It will certainly be nice to have my evenings freed up after five months. No question, we were all getting a little stressed out keeping up the schedule of three hour classes twice a week. But there's definitely also a bit of a letdown, too.

When class started way back in June, I remember walking in and sitting down in a

room full of strangers. We sat there and listened to the lectures and looked at the slides, each of us in our own little bubble.

Then, after a few weeks, we started doing scenarios and practicals—exercises in which we formed up into small teams and began training together. At first, we were hesitant and awkward. No one wanted to go first.

Going first invariably meant screwing up in front of everyone else and feeling stupid.

Gradually, we all realized how much we were learning every time we screwed up, and that it wasn't about the feeling stupid part at all. It was about the learning part. In the end, we didn't worry so much about going first. We were focused more on each other and the "patient," and less on ourselves. Under the guidance and leadership of our teacher, Patty Bashaw, we had become a team. When I first sat down in that roomful of strangers, I would never have guessed how much I would end up missing my friends in EMS class.

he annual Essex Christmas bazaars and sales will occur the first weekend in December, in several venues. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the third through fifth, shops in town, including the art gallery, will be open for your convenience, and on the 4^th , Saturday, there are several special events. The Christmas Bazaar at the Community Church, featuring arts, crafts, elephants and Essexiana, will run from 10 to 2:30, with a $5 lunch available from 11:30 to 1. At 1:00, Kristin Kimball will be on hand to sell and sign copies of her terrific book, “The Dirty Life.” She chronicles her life and struggles to become a farmer with humor, affection and disarming honesty. Also for sale will be Steven Kellogg books autographed by the author.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be arriving on the 9:30 ferry on Saturday, the 4th , and will preside over a community breakfast at the firehouse starting at 10. All are welcome.

After meeting Santa, don’t forget to drive out to Whallonsburg, where there will be a

craft bazaar at the Grange, from 10 to 4. This sale will benefit our troops who are serving overseas.

I’m just back from a visit to the Gulf Coast of Alabama, where the effects of last summer ’s huge oil spill seem to be more economic than environmental. Shrimp, crabs, and oysters are readily available, at pre-spill prices. Fishing in the coastal marshes is supposed to be excellent, because most of the summer no fish were taken and got a chance to grow. I happily ate my share of shellfish, but wonder what became of all the oil and the compounds used to disperse it.

On the interstates, I spent a fair amount of time scanning the FM dial. In east Texas and west Louisiana, where rice growing and oil refining dominate, one can hear Louisiana Cajuns broadcasting in French, or a strange version of it, and hear Spanish from Hispanic stations. Of course, English is still used, so in one location you can hear French, Spanish and English at the same time on the airwaves.

illsboro got the Holiday season off to a great start. Saturday Nov. 19 & 20th many shoppers came to enjoy the three Holiday sales and lunches being offered in town. It is reported that the movie “Safety Last” shown last weekend at the local school by the Champlain Valley Film Society was a real fun event. This was a silent Comedy with the expertise of pianist Ben Model, playing through out the film. Then once again the area churches joined together to offer a Thanksgiving Evening Service this past Sunday evening.

You should watch for the Paine Library holiday offerings. Many families had some large gatherings for the Thanksgiving meal.

The Holiday season continues on this weekend with more opportunities to make the rounds and visit other seasonal sales. Saturday Dec. 4th the Willsboro Congregational Church will be holding their annual Christmas Greens Tea and sale. It will start at 9 a.m. and runs until 3 p.m.. They feature a food table, collectibles, crafts and a soup & sandwich lunch. Downtown Essex comes alive with the Christmas

Spirit with the United Methodist Church’s sale and soup lunch. Shops will be open and a lot going on all day. The Grange Hall in Whallonsburg will be hosting another Holiday Sale. So everyone is invited back to make the rounds and meet up with friends and have a most enjoyable time. It is hard to believe but Christmas is just around the corner.

Reminder that on Tuesday, Nov. 30th anyone that is interesting in reviewing their Health care options with Medicare & Medicaid and prescription coverage can join us at the Willsboro United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. to check your options and get some advise from a reprehensive from the Office of the Aging. There are some changes with the new Health Care legislation recently passed into effect. All interested persons are welcome.

he middle of November has found us with all the trees bare now. It is kind of fun how the surroundings change and take on a much more open look. I really love the shelter that I have in the spring and summer and the sense of isolation it gives me, but it’s nice to see that I do have neighbors. It also gives my dog a lot more opportunities to bark as well.

The Keeseville United Methodist Church is going to have a Thanksgiving dinner which is such a wonderful thing to give to those with needs. Any one who can help in anyway please get in touch with the Church at 1699 Front Street or 834-7577. Don’t forget they are always looking for gently used items at their Thrift Shop which is open Wednesdays from 9 -4 as well as the first and third Tuesdays from 5 -7 and the Second Saturday of the month from 10 2.

The Keeseville Free Library has several events lining up which are worth noting. This Friday November 19th the annual display of Christmas tins will start. At this point the li-

brary has more than eight hundred tins. On December 3rd will be the annual Children’s Christmas Party with a dancing Santa as well as some other surprises in the works. The library also wanted an advanced word out on two wonderful free workshops coming in January.

First will be Basic Course on Computers and the second will be on word processing. Again these are free courses and open to the public.

Please call the library to reserve a seat for either or both of these classes at the Library on Front Street or by phone at 834-9054. Special thanks yet again to Mary and her wonderful staff for giving our community such a wonder offering of free events for our community.

We are also fast approaching the Church of the Nazarene’s first annual Festival of Trees.

This should be an incredible event and I will have more information on this in the coming weeks.

1897 Essex County Republican WESTPORT —Westport Inn is undergoing extensive repairs. Miss Alice Lee, the owner, has had removed the south wing, which was considered sufficiently large when the hotel was first built, and replaced by a large annex, which is three stories high with modern mansard roof, which connects the new south build-ing with the original hotel. The first floor of the new annex, will have a double bow window on street front, with porch, and a twenty foot board piazza on lake front, with double balconies above. The Inn will have, when completed, nearly three hundred feet of board piazza.

The street front office in the new part will be a spacious room 26X40 feet with high ceiling, fin-ished in natural wood of Georgia pine with white spruce panels.

A broad platform stair case of oak will lead from the office each way, to the halls of second story in the new and old parts.

A large brick fire place at the end of the office makes it a most complete apartment. A modern baggage elevator will be placed in the centre from basement to attic. The lake front is di-vided into two large parlors, with large brick fire places and stately mantles; also there will be fire places in the second story parlors…

When completed the Westport Inn will be a model of beauty, and will have facilities for the accommodation and comfort of hundreds of pleasure seekers. The Inn is so located that the finest lake and mountain views are obtained. One of the best features is the ample supply of cold pure mountain spring water. Mr. David A. 1937 The Adirondack Record– Elizabethtown Post NORTH ELBA—Bear are reported plentiful in the heavily wooded area beyond the western shore of Lake Placid, two being brought out of that section last week.

It took but one shot from the gun of Ronald Mackenzie to fall an 180-pound black bear back of Camp Pigeon Roost. The bullet penetrated the heart. Fritz Korber shot one 20 pounds light and several other hunters have sighted bear. George Hyney, care-taker at Camp Undercliff, brought in a 160 pound buck from the same vicinity. Although small, the deer had a beautiful head with 14 points. Mrs. Grace Tyrell has reported taking a 140-pounder shot near the base of Whiteface Mountain, and Carl Parody returned to his home in Warsaw with a 12 pointer weighing 185 pounds. George Weaver got perhaps the smallest one of all, near Spruce Hill, a buck weighing hardly more than 100 pounds. Arthur Maynard’s buck had a spread of 23 inches with a nearly perfect eight point head. Weighing 180 pounds, the deer was shot on the Pardee pre-serve at Lewis. Two other deer were shot by the Pardee party, Charles Eade and James Sharpe each loading their kill for their return to Hazelton, Pa. Half an hour after he had entered the woods near St. Regis Falls Paul N. Roy brought down an eight-pointer weighing 160 pounds. What is believed to be the largest black bear ever taken in Eastern New York was killed recently by Jean Mose of Saranac Lake.

The bear weighed 532 pounds, fully dressed.

oon, many of our homes will be filled with the delicious smells of Thanksgiving. The turkey or ham will be cooked to perfection, the chestnut stuffing, the candied yams and the pumpkin pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream will be part of our feast.

For some, it will be a time to reunite with family members from a far and friends seldom seen. It will also be an occasion for time honored traditions and each family has them. In my family getting a piece of the turkey skin before the meal was served was considered a privilege.

This tradition will be lost to my family as my daughter is a vegetarian and I don’t think Tofu has skin and even if it did, not an appetizing picture. One tradition that has continued is a practice instituted by my mother where everyone around the table takes a minute or so to say what they are thankful for.

When I was very young, my family would have thanksgiving at my aunt’s house and there were twenty-five or so people usually in attendance. The adults sat together and all the kids sat together.

At the time, I couldn’t understand why some of the women seated at the table would shed a tear sometimes when they gave thanks and sometimes it felt like I was in church and not about to eat Thanksgiving dinner. I don’t remember the meals so much, but some of the words that were spoken I do remember.

My aunt and mom would always say how important their relationship was with each other and those words were very powerful.

Their relationship prevailed until my aunt was nearly 101 and my mom was 90. The women gave thanks that Grandma Scott was in good health or that Aunt Annie had recovered from gall bladder surgery. Aunt Millie would often mention those that had passed away, but were missed including two of her children that were lost during birth.

These moments were the most emotional as this pain obviously registered with every woman around the table. Several of the women thanked the Johnson Mine Company where most of the

nity. With the current economic conditions, it is even more important that we challenge ourselves to broaden our reach and engage further participation in this year’s campaign.

I have been actively involved with United Way for over 10 years, and in each community I have witnessed the great results that can be obtained through the support of your local United Way Organization.

I am a true believer in the structure and organization we call United Way. The money raised by United Way stays local, the decision makers are local and the commitment is all built on a local focus to serve North Country residents.

Take advantage of payroll deductions if your employer offers this option and if they currently do not, encourage them to do so. If you are now retired and have been an active participant in the past, don’t stop; contact United Way directly to participate in this year’s campaign. And if you have the means to contribute at a leadership level but haven’t in the past, please give strong consideration to becoming a leadership-giving member during the 2011 campaign.

So much has changed since I was a little boy, however, the ideas of giving thanks for what we have and sharing with those less fortunate has not.

This Thanksgiving, consider giving a donation of food or money to your local food shelf and include your children when you do it.

Sadly, there will be many more Americans that will need this kind of help this year.

If you don’t already have a tradition of giving thanks at your Thanksgiving dinner consider starting a new tradition that includes giving thanks for all that you have. It’s OK if you get emotional; it’s OK to shed a few tears in the course of giving thanks to and for the people that you love.

One thing that has changed for the good from my boyhood Thanksgivings is that men can share their feelings without the fear of being seen as odd or worse. On this Thanksgiving if your family celebrates by eating turkey or tofu, be glad that you are healthy, have a roof over your head and surrounded by loved ones or friends.

If you find yourself in this fortunate circumstance; then you have a great deal to be thankful for. Happy Thanksgiving!

Remember, all kids count.

Exhibition planned at Adk Artists Guild SARANAC LAKE — Walls, Windows and Doors, an exhibit of photographs by Eleanor Sweeney, will be on display at the Adirondack Artists Guild from Dec. 1 through Jan. 2.

"I have always been attracted to the colors and textures of walls, windows and doors," said Sweeney, "and I like to wonder what might lie on the other side."

Some of the photographs are recent and others were made long ago, but never printed.

They are of places nearby and far away. Several of the pieces in the exhibit are printed on silk.

The Adirondack Artists Guild is a cooperative retail art gallery representing a diverse group of regional artists residing and working in the Tri-Lakes region of the Adirondack Park. The gallery is located at 52 Main St., and can be reached at 891-2615. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and 12 to 3 p.m. Sundays. The gallery is closed Mondays. Festival of Trees planned in Keeseville

KEESEVILLE — December 2 -3-4 will be very special at one location in Keeseville as the Good Shepherd Church is hosting a Festival of Trees. This celebration of the opening of Christmas is the idea of Pastor and Mrs Richard Reese. The idea is to have as many Keeseville businesses and agencies sponsor and decorate a tree which will be at the church at 124 Hill Street. There will be many different themes offered such as a “kids tree,” a “music tree,” and a “food tree.” One other special highlight of the festival is a railroad room, in which a G scale train layout is on display. It is hoped to have 30 to 35 different trees decorated and on display.

In addition to the trees, a special time of a musical offering will be presented by seven area student violinists. They will be performing traditional and holiday pieces .

Refreshments will be served at all open house times . The public is cordially invited to this and is free of charge . Anyone who wishes can bring a donation of a canned good item for the local food shelf.

WESTPORT — At the Board of Education Meeting Nov. 9 Westport Central School was officially added as a Validated Practice Site and Mentor School by the state Education Department’s S3TAIR Project. Westport Central School’s Validated Practice Site is named in the area of Data Based Decision Making in Literacy.

The S3TAIR Project, New York’s IDEA State Personnel Development Grant, is based on the premises that: • Many schools and districts in New York State are providing evidence based effective practices resulting in success for students with disabilities, and • These schools’ and districts’ experiences in implementing and maintaining effective practices can help other schools and districts attempting to improve outcomes for students with disabilities.

New York’s project is designed to improve outcomes for students with disabilities by helping educators increase skills in literacy, positive behavior intervention, and special education instruction. Through the S3TAIR Project, districts and schools that have effective, evidence based practices in these areas will mentor schools in need of assistance or intervention as they implement similar practices.

A key element in the S3TAIR Project is identification and validation of effective evidence based practices in nominated districts and schools statewide. Schools and districts whose practices are validated are spotlighted on the S3TAIR website.

Schools and districts whose practices are validated also may apply for grants to mentor other districts/schools’ practice implementation efforts. Documentation of these partnerships are also highlighted on the S3TAIR Web site. The schools whose practices are selected as Mentor Schools have been funded to form a partnership with a Replication School in need of assistance or intervention to improve outcomes in an area targeted by the New York State Improvement Plan.

No takers for former Camp Gabriels prison

By Jon Alexander denpubs@denpubs.com BRIGHTON — The state Office of General Services received no bids for the former Camp Gabriels minimum security prison.

The state has been looking to sell the 91acre parcel ever since its 2009 closure due to shrinking inmate populations and declining budget appropriations at the state Department of Correctional Services.

But apparently, no one wants the property. The state had set a minimum $950,000 bid on Camp Gabriels.

Heather Groll is spokeswoman for OGS. “We’re going to look at the potential options that are available to us from an economic development standpoint,” she said.

“Potentially leasing, requesting the help of the Empire State Development Corporation, going to RFP, potentially holding on to the property until there’s a change in the market.”

The bids were scheduled to be opened on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 17.

The town of Brighton has been actively participating in the search for potential buyers.

Price Chopper donates $5k to LPVAS LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid Volunteer Ambulance Service has received $5,000 from Price Chopper Supermarket’s Golub Foundation toward the renovation of the LPVAS station house.

The number of service calls the ambulance squad responds to has increased every year, with a record setting pace of 1,253 calls to date. In response to the growing need, the LPVAS vehicle fleet has grown to three ambulances and a fly car. The station house cannot house that many vehicles at its current size. Renovations have been planned to increase the number of vehicle bays as well as to enlarge the upstairs training room and attend to some deterioration of some of the external walls.

“We are thankful to the Golub Foundation,” said Larry Brockway, vice-president of LPVAS. “The ambulance squad’s volunteers will continue to work hard to raise funds to complete this muchneeded project.”

Representatives from the towns of North Elba and Wilmington, the village of Lake Placid, the Lake Placid Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the state Olympic Regional Development Authority made a joint decision Wednesday night to work together and keep the games alive.

Reports that the state was pulling funding for the Empire State Games were still sinking in Thursday when officials convened a news conference to announce that the winter games were back on.

With tourism officials estimating a loss of $1 million in economic impact as a result of the games’ cancellation, Lake Placid Village Mayor Craig Randall said continuing the event was critical to the region’s sustainability.

He said the loss of state funding actually presents an opportunity going forward, similar to efforts by Melvil Dewey in 1928 to bring the Olympics to Lake Placid.

“We have to look at this as one more of those activities in the history of the area where we could either allow it to go away, or we could step up to the table and perpetuate the vision of the Deweys and do what Lake Placid has done so well in the past with our friends and neighbors,” Randall said. “We need to take advantage of an opportunity here and pick up these games. We have all the resources we need.”

North Elba Supervisor Roby Politi said the state’s decision could be viewed as a disappointment – but that’s not the Lake Placid way.

“Lake Placid is all about opportunities so we decided to pick up the ball and run with it,” Politi said. “The state has said it can’t do it. But Lake Placid is saying we can do it. We have the community spirit, the resourcefulness – and we have great partnerships.”

And while the loss of the games would have hurt the community economically, Politi said it’s not just about money.

“It’s more than financial,” he said. “We need to be thinking about young athletes.

Athletes from across the state look forward to coming here and feeling the magic and the spirit of this Olympic place. It’s a wonderful experience.”

Jim McKenna, president and CEO for the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism and the Lake Placid Convention and Visitors Bureau, called the decision to continue the games a no-brainer.

“There’s a lot of expertise here,” he said.

“We’re going to show the state that we can do this, and do it in a way that’s better than the past. This has the ability to lead to better things in the future.”

Politi said that unlike the summer games — which have encountered significantly more financial hardship over the years — the winter games cost relatively little. He said the infrastructure and venues are already in place, and the community is experienced in hosting events of this nature.

McKenna said the next step is to secure the necessary funding. That, he said, could be accomplished through private sponsorship.

“We have to show value and put together a package for potential sponsors,” he said.

“Partnerships is what it’s about.”

State Sen. Elizabeth Little and Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward both said the state should have explored public-private sponsorships before deciding to cancel the games. In separate statements released Thursday, the two North Country lawmakers hailed the community effort to save the

games.

Requests for comment from budget officials in Albany were unsuccessful Thursday.

McKenna said he hasn’t heard whether the state is endorsing the plan.

The Empire State Winter Games features an array of Olympic-style competitions, including bobsled, biathlon, Nordic combined, and alpine skiing. Past games have featured Olympic and World Cup champions like Billy Demong and Andrew Weibrecht.

Essex Christmas Festival schedule EESEX — Many activities are scheduled for the 17th annual “Christmas in The Village” set to take place Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 3, 4 and 5. Decorated village shops will be open all three days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be refreshments at the shops and a soup and chili lunch at The Cupola House Sunday to benefit the local food shelf.

On Saturday, Santa will arrive at the Essex ferry at 9:30 a.m. Parents and children are invited to have breakfast with Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Essex Firehouse on NYS Route 22 afterwards. The annual Essex Community Church Bazaar and Luncheon happens Saturday starting at 10 a.m.

Local author Kristin Kimball, will be on hand Saturday afternoon at Beldon Noble Library at 1 p.m. to sign her new book, The Dirty Life, a memoir of her life at Essex Farm. Signed copies of Steven Kellogg’s new book will be also be available at the library. There will be an art exhibit at the Adirondack Art Association Gallery open all three days, with artists available. The AAA gallery is located in the Olde Essex Firehouse at the light on Main Street. The Cupola House Gallery on South Main Street will have “A Holiday Sampler” exhibit during the entire month of December, featuring fine and folk art from area artists as well as excellent local crafts and quilts.

A Holiday Craft Bazaar at the Whallonsburg Grange Hall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will feature local work as well as homemade soup and other refreshments. This event is a benefit for our troops serving overseas.

There will be crafting for kids as well as entertainment and a silent auction featuring unique items.

Concert planned at the Hand House ELIZABETHTOWN — Piano by Nature will be holding a special fundraising concert Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. at th Hand House in Elizabethtown. The program will be "Rags&Tangos" performed by marimbist Jane Boxall and pianist Rose Chancler Feinbloom. This eclectic program covers almost 100 years of music and will be performed one-night-only! Elizabethown-Lewis 2010 Girls Basketball

Lady Lions will rely on proven youth ELIZABETHTOWN – The future looks bright for the Elizabethtown-Lewis girls basketball team.

“We are looking to improve our defense and grow as a team,” said head coach Don Ratliff. “We are young, but we have eight girls returning who all have starter games last year.”

Freshman forward Shonna Brooks returns, having led the team in points, rebounds, and blocks during her eighth grade year. Fellow freshman Lily Whalen also returns, having led last year ’s 8-10 squad in assists.

Senior Jessyka McGinn, Juniors Clare Harwood and Andrea LeVien, and sophomores Jennifer McGinn, Kylee Cassavaugh, and Kearstin Ashline also played key roles last year.

Newcomers include senior Ashli Canabush, junior Kaitlin Coats, and sophomores Emily Morris and Sierra Wimett.

Elizabethown-Lewis 2010 Boys Basketball

ELCS loses six to graduation, returns just two seniors ELIZABETHTOWN — Graduation was tough on the Elizabethtown-Lewis boys basketball team as they lost six key players from their 4-11 team.

Zach Denton and Troy Light return as the only seniors on the team, but they are joined by the varsity experience of juniors Hunter Mowery, Tim LaRock and Andy Mitchell, as well as sophomore Charlie Huttig. Huttig and Mowery both saw plenty of minutes last year and will likely be a big force in the Lions’ backcourt.

A slew of newcomers add depth and size to the team this year, including junior centers Ezekiel Diemand and Zach Pelletier and junior forwards Nate Rock and Corey Feeley. Juniors Patrick Phillips and Cole Fernandez will work into the guard rotation.

“Our goal is to win as many games as possible,” said head coach Ralph Holzhauer.

Keene 2010 Girls Basketball

Keene loses scoring leader, but will have experience on the court KEENE VALLEY — A deep roster that’s flush with varsity experience is likely to give Keene an edge in MVAC girls basketball.

The Beavers suffer the loss of scoring leader Emma Nye to graduation, but they will have plenty of options to look to with nine players returning from last year ’s 3-14 squad.

Senior Jessica Caner leads a group of returners that also features juniors Brittney Guerin, Amanda Boyle, Emma Gothner and Anna Kowanko, and sophomores Hannah McCabe, Sadie Holbrook, Megan Hall and Chrissy Fabiano.

Joining the team this year are senior Stephanie Shackett, junior Alexis Smith, sophomore Alex Dumas, and freshman Olivia Jaques.

“Our goals this year are to work as a team, be competitive, be good sports, and have lots of fun,” said Beavers’ head coach Valerie Warner. **Editor ’s Note: Keene will not field a boys basketball team during the 2010 season.

Westport 2010 Boys Basketball

Westport boys hope to rebound from graduation WESTPORT – The boys of Westport could prove to be a dark horse this basketball season as just a shadow of the team that dominated the MVAC the past two seasons.

The Eagles suffered the loss of four seniors and one junior from last year ’s 16-3 team, including their top two scorers: Nathan Gay and Bo McKinley.

Seniors Kevin Russell and David Quaglietta will be looked to for leadership as the only players returning. Though Russell started last year, recovery from knee surgery could limit his action early in the season.

Their success will depend heavily on a large group of newcomers. Seniors Liam Davis, Justin Floyd, William Adams, Alex Frum and Chris Golembeck, junior Cooper Sayward, and sophomores Gabe Schrauf and Ethan Markwica will all be looked to for solid minutes.

“Our goal is to improve all year and be competitive,” said Eagles head coach Ike Tyler.

Westport 2010 Girls Basketball

Lady Eagles still flying high WESTPORT – The Westport girls dominated both the MVAC and Class D last year, suffering their only loss in the regional playoffs to Section X’s Harrisville. This year, with five players returning, they remain a force to be reckoned with.

The Eagles lost four players to graduation, including MVAC coMVP Martha McKinley.

Her sister, junior Willa McKinley, with whom Martha shared the award last year, and senior Christina Sherman, an All-Star at point guard last year, return to lead the defending champions.

Seniors Nancy Armitage and Molly Rascoe also return, as does junior guard Allison Sherman, who gave Westport a good spark off the bench last year.

Juniors Karlee McGee, Mallory Sudduth and Emily French, along with promising freshman Brendee Russell, will give the Eagles plenty of depth.

“My expectations for the team this year are that we compete with honor every night,” said Westport head coach Hokey McKinley.

Willsboro 2010 Girls Basketball

Youth key for Lady Warriors WILLSBORO – The Willsboro girls basketball team will rely on the development of its young roster to remain competitive in the MVAC this year.

Juniors Hannah Bruno and Serene Holland and sophomores Kyli Swires and Renee Marcotte are the only returners on a Warriors squad that lost five key seniors to graduation, including leading scorer and rebounder Alicia Mahoney. Holland saw significant minutes last year and is likely to be looked to as a leader on the court.

They will be joined by junior Renee Provost, sophomores Amanda Mahoney, and freshman Tiffany Tromblee for a roster of seven players.

Three players did not return to the team for their senior year: Morgan Jaquish, Madison LaMotte and Brittany Schreiber.

The Warriors are coached by Charlene Lobdell.

Willsboro 2010 Boys Basketball

Willsboro boys look to bounce back WILLSBORO – The Warriors lost some key players from last years’ squad, which finished 9-12 overall and captured the MVAC Division I title in a playoff with Chazy. Still, they’re looking to pick up right where they left off.

Five players return, including senior Alex Hamel, who led the team in both scoring and assists last year, and junior Clay Sherman, another past starter. Seniors Patrick Wells and John Pollock and junior Brandon Bertrand also saw plenty of minutes last year.

“With two starters and three past players with varsity experience, this year should be a competitive one with the hope of being one of the teams in contention for the divisional title,” said Willsboro head coach Jim Spring.

Junior Dakota Sayward is expected to start in his first year on varsity.

Also joining the Warriors are juniors Nick Ball, Clayton Cross, Cody Sayward, and Nick Nogovich.

AuSable Valley 2010 Boys Basketball

Patriots return solid nucleus CLINTONVILLE – The AuSable Valley boys finished a close runner up in the Section VII Class B championship last year. With seven players returning, they come back hungry for another title run.

Among those returning are the Patriots’ top three scorers: seniors T.J. Burl, and Jordan Coolidge and junior Brody Douglass. Each averaged double-digit points per game last year, and the three combined for 61 3pointers.

Also returning are seniors Ryan Lee and Justin Hart, and juniors Connor Manning, and Austin House, each of whom saw significant playing time last year.

Joining the team this year are juniors Nick Rhino, Michael Hart, John Hickey, and Phil Nolan. All but Hickey measure at least 6-foot and will add considerable size to a team previously lacking it.

“We will try to remain an up-tempo team with defense and transition game being our strengths,” said Patriots head coach Jamie Douglass. “We expect to be a competitive team. With so much parity in the league, there will be some great basketball games.”

AuSable Valley 2010 Girls Basketball

AVCS girls shooting for title CLINTONVILLE – With eight players returning from last year ’s 146 team, the AuSable Valley girls are once again looking to challenge the best teams in the CVAC. The Patriots captured Division II once again last year, advancing to the Class B semifinals before being defeated in the sectional playoffs.

Head coach Roger Long said the Patriots are primed to again win their division and compete for a sectional title.

“We need to stay healthy, hungry, and committed to team to pull off those two goals,” he said.

Senior Alexis Coolidge, a 5’11” forward and first-team CVAC All-Star the past two seasons, returns to anchor a solid starting lineup for the Patriots. Fellow seniors Kayla Taylor and Savannah Douglas and junior forward Alexis Facteau have all been key for AuSable Valley in past seasons and will start as well. They will be joined by eighth-grader Meghan Strong, a prodigious 5’2” guard.

Seniors Alex Casey and Carlee Hart and juniors Cammey Keyser and Alexis Ryan return to provide solid depth. Juniors Megan Colby and Taylor Bordeau, together with freshman Taylor Saltus, move up to the varsity level this year and will rotate into the guard positions.

AuSable Valley 2010 Wrestling

AVCS grapplers return with force CLINTONVILLE – The AuSable Valley wrestling team will bring plenty of experience to its meets this year in a wide variety of weight classes.

As a team, the Patriots finished without a win in eight meets last year, but will look to improve with speed, strength, and technique.

Returning to the team this year are seniors Dillon Traynor, Francis Estes, Adam Luxon and Jordan Bouyea; junior Matt Lamere; and sophomores Jon Luxon, Collin Fuller and Michael Thompson.

They are joined by seniors Roger Howerton and Taylor Hall, juniors Joe Parker and Dan Papa, sophomore Kodie Simpson, and freshman Logan Blaise.

The Patriots are led by head coach John Dukett with assistance from modified coach Kenny Baker and assistant coaches Jon Capen and Carl Benware.

AuSable Valley 2010 Indoor Track

Patriot runners bring skill, depth CLINTONVILLE – With a combination of proven runners and a myriad of determined newcomers, the AVCS indoor track team should compete well in Section VII this year.

“I will be counting on seasoned athletes such as Raychel Agoney, James Crowningshield, Jena Finnegan, Sidney Flint, James Rock, Nick Sitts and Thomas Therrien to provide solid performances and good leadership for our younger and less experienced athletes,” said Sean Ganter, the head coach for both the boys and girls teams. “I am excited for the season.”

Flint, a senior, holds the Section VII girls outdoor track triple jump record of 35’9” and a school record of 16’7” in outdoor long jump, will no doubt be a points leader for the Patriot girls. Rock, a junior, is a proven performer on the boys side in the long jump, triple jump, and sprints.

Also competing will be seniors Michael Rankin; juniors Jaffrey Galusha, Christopher LaFontaine, Caitlin Blaise, Leann Cook, and Cassidy Howard; sophomores Elijah Fitzgerald, Jonathan LaDieu, Noah Lawrence, Ridge Perkette, Bryce Allen and Rebecca Newell; freshmen Zachary Crowningshield, Mollie Mashtare, Taylor Duncan, and Ashlee Estes; eighth-graders Jasmaine Hall, Noura Moussa, and Cassandra Snow; and seventhgraders Elijah Bushey, Nick Trumbull, Thorne Bola, Chandler LaMere, Madison Hall, and Ashley Guynup.
