State Assembly Committee to meet on DEC cuts

Officials consider smoking ban on Essex County property

ELIZABETHTOWN — Essex County may ban cigarette smoking on all of its property.

The county Public Safety Committee unanimously approved Monday the creation of an exploratory committee that could see smoking totally banned on county property within the next year.

The few supervisors and members of the press who smoke regularly cluster between committees outside the county board chambers.

And, Chesterfield’s Gerald Morrow isn’t a fan.

“I’m very biased against smoking. I have never smoked over my entire life and I detest the smell of smoke,” he said. “If I had my way, there would be no smoking on these grounds, period.”

County employees also regularly mingle around the county complex and smoke while on break.

Even smokers, like Moriah’s Tom Scozzafava, may line up to support the ban.

banned smoking at the public beach and at our little league fields.”

Numerous Essex County towns have already passed local bans on smoking outside of public buildings and on municipal properties.

County Chairman Randy Douglas noted that if and when the county institutes the ban, it wouldn’t be the first.

“The mayor of New York City just did this,” he said. “It’s happening all over the country.”

CCE to host diabetes health fair ELIZABETHTOWN — There will be a diabetes health fair taking place at the Elizabethtown Community Hospital on Monday, Nov. 15 from 3 – 6 p.m.

The health fair is organized by the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Essex County and will take place in the hospital boardroom. A light dinner will be served.

The event will allow participants to have their blood pressure and A1c levels checked free of charge. The Hemoglobin A1c test is used to monitor a patient’s glucose control over a period of time.

The event also features pharmaceutical representatives, dieticians and pharmacists who will be on-hand to answer questions regarding medications, diet and other information that participants can further discuss with their health care providers.

Poor voter turnout in Essex County; officials blame new machines

By Jon Alexander denpubs@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — Fewer Essex County residents voted in last week’s midterm elections than in 2006 and officials are blaming the new ballot counting machines for the lower turnout.

Essex County Chairman Randy Douglas said he has discussed the new electronic ballot counting machines with numerous residents and found elderly voters are especially uncomfortable with the new technology.

“They’re scared of the new machines,” he said. “I think we have to get the message out there, somehow, that it is rather easy to vote.”

Senior citizens are typically some of the most reliable voters.

In 2006, 13,906 Essex County voters went to the polls. That number plummeted last Tuesday to just 12,423. In Douglas’ hometown of Jay, only 841 people cast a ballot last week, down from more than 1,200 in 2006.

This year was the first time many counties

in the North Country began using the new machines, as mandated under the Help America Vote Act of 2002.

Essex County Board of Elections officials had undertaken some senior citizen outreach efforts meant to familiarize them with the new machines. But, with tight budgets and lacking a means of transporting the expensive equipment, the outreach initiative wasn’t as far-reaching as officials would have liked.

County Republican Commissioner Derinda Sherman said officials will continue to work to familiarize the region’s seniors with the new machines.

Many local governments have been wary of the new ballot counting machines primarily because of cost concerns. They also gripe about the increased time it takes to get the unofficial results reported and posted on the Internet.

Federal officials counter that in 2000, about 2 million ballots were disqualified nationally because of problems with the lever technology.

ELIZABETHTOWN — Elizabethtown Community Hospital’s auxiliary will be selling pies this Thanksgiving.

Now in its sixth year, the Thanksgiving pie sale is one of the auxiliary’s most popular fundraisers. The auxiliary produces cherry, apple and pumpkin pies for purchase by community members. Each pie costs $12 and comes boxed and labeled.

Last year, the group produced 88 pies.

“As you might imagine, the actual pie-making day is quite a production,” laughed Laura Sells-Doyle, auxiliary president. “But we have it down to a science at this point. It’s amazing to people that we produce 88 pies in about 8 hours. This year, we’d love to hit the 100 pie mark.”

Orders for pies will be taken until 3 pm on Nov. 19. Payment is due when the order is placed. Pies are made on Nov. 23 and may be picked up in the lobby of the hospital on Nov. 24 from 2 – 4 pm.

The Elizabethtown Community Hospital Auxiliary participates in fundraising efforts throughout the year; and proceeds go to support the hospital. The group donates clothing and snacks to those who need emergency room care, offers care packages to chemotherapy patients, and gives gifts and flowers to patients in the hospital at Christmas. They also provide scholarship funding and purchase equipment for the hospital’s various departments.

As I’m writing this on Monday, the sleet is hammering at the window. Hmmm. Guess summer’s over.

The Wadhams Free Library will kick off its Fall/Winter Wednesdays in Wadhams lecture series with an illustrated talk by local artist Sally Smith Wednesday, Nov. 17, at 7:30 p.m. Sally, whose photograph “Chapel Pond Spiral” won the Cover Art Award this year from the Arts Council for the Northern Adirondacks, takes objects from nature, arranges them in creative ways, and then carefully photographs her cre-

ations. She’ll present her new DVD “One,” which tracks the seasonal changes of one year and features photos of many of her favorite works.

Another sign that the holidays are fast approaching is the Westport Library Association’s annual Holiday Party, which will be held Saturday, Nov. 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. This festive event combines a wine-tasting with a silent auction, with one of the highlights being the dramatic opening of a champagne bottle with a sabre. I take it that doesn’t mean the sabre comes with a corkscrew. The auction includes antique furniture, paintings, jewelry, and a Westport Mountain Spring Water bottle. (Let’s keep the sabre away from that one.)

The congregations of St Philip Neri and Westport Federated Churches are again hosting a community Thanksgiving Worship Service Sunday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m. The host church this year will be the Westport Federated Church. his week, I’m in Austin, Texas visiting my son and daughter. I drove here, about 2,000 miles, and along the way saw corn standing in old-fashioned shocks in an Ohio field, long barge tows on the Mississippi, and newly planted rice in eastern Arkansas.

Otherwise, America from the interstates is rather uninspiring, although once you reach the South, the music on the radio lets you know our country is not wholly homogenous. I heard good country in Nashville, soul and R& B in Memphis and fantastic blues in Little Rock.

Last night, we had Lou and Abby Comeau over for dinner. Abby lives on the other side of Austin, and Essex’s favorite bon vivant was down here for a visit. With old-school cowboy boots and a Stetson, he looked every inch the prosperous Texas cattleman. Like me, he is enthralled with the local barbeque, particularly beef brisket, smoked over oak until it falls off the bone, salty, sweet and totally addictive.

My favorite barbeque place is in Taylor, Tx., a run-down farming and railroad town north of Austin. The restaurant is in a former basketball

gym, and so smoky inside the walls and ceiling are a deep burnt umber color. It’s counter service only, with butcher paper for plates and picnic tables for seating, but the beer is cold, the ribs delicious, and afterward you can shoot baskets at the far end of the room.

On Saturday, I went to Austin’s farmers market to get some greens and fresh eggs. I also came home with some Texas-grown mushrooms and a couple of bottles of peppery olive oil. A woman and her son run the olive ranch, as they call it, down near the Mexican border.

The countryside there is what we in verdant Essex would think of as desert, with scrubby brush, endless bleak vistas and lots of dismal grays and browns. The olives are all irrigated, of course, and their biggest problem is rattlesnakes getting into their processing plant.

The snakes are being displaced by nearby oil and gas exploration, so they keep a rifle handy.

After I wear out my welcome here, my next stop will be coastal Alabama, where I’m curious to see what last summer’s big oil spill did to the shrimp and oysters.

he fall season is still full of meaningful activities. The election process is now behind us, there are still many absentee ballots that need to be counted this next week.

That count will tell us the definite winner of the Supervisor’s race here in Willsboro, the first count was very close. The next big event here is the program and meal for the local veterans.

This is the sixth year that this celebration will have taken place at the Willsboro United Methodist Church. We are happy to announce that the other local churches have joined in to be an active part of this special celebration. This year they will feature three speakers, the posting of the colors, and a nice display of pictures of many of those that have served in the military.

The next big event comes on the weekend before Thanksgiving. The United Methodist Church will hold their annual Holiday Sale and Soup & Bread Luncheon on the weekend of Nov. 19-20. The sale will start on Friday evening from 4-7 p.m. and then on Saturday from 10-3, with the lunch starting at 11 a.m. This year, we will have an added attraction of having a previously owned Sweater table along with pocket books. They also feature a baked goods table,

I received another email from a reader, Don Loreman, concerning the other bridges in our community. I often have wondered about the closed bridge as it is a very beautiful structure.

When I get a chance I will really have to research the history of our area. Please keep sending me information as I will save it and see what I can turn it into for an article or work of its own.

Thanksgiving is a time for family and friends to enjoy a special meal together, there will be an Ecumenical Thanksgiving service at 7 p.m. at the Willsboro Congregational Church.

Then we hope interested senior citizens will come join us Nov. 30 at the United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. to go over our options for Health Care Coverage. A Reprehensive from the office of the aging will share our options in case we need to make any changes by early December. This is open to any interested persons.

TFCU again offering scholarships to local seniors

TICONDEROGA — The Ticonderoga Federal Credit Union is again offering local high school seniors the opportunity to win several scholarships toward tuition at a two or four-year accredited college.

TFCU student members will be competing with high school students from credit unions statewide for Credit Union Association of New York awards. In addition, they will be competing regionally within the Adirondack District for a $500 scholarship, and locally among TFCU members for $500 scholarships. Three $500 TFCU scholarships were awarded in 2010.

To be eligible, students must be collegebound high school seniors at the time of application, attending college for the first time in the fall of 2011, and members of the Ticonderoga Federal Credit Union.

My therapists have shared that meeting new acquaintances is always exciting and fun, but loyalty and faithfulness to our families and friends are among the most important commitments that we can make. My therapists have taught me that sometimes, our loved ones need to be deep in themselves sometimes and just sitting close and listening is the best thing to do.

My therapists have reminded me that spontaneity is truly the spice of life and also makes for many humorous and memorable moments in our lives. As many of us overload our schedules with jobs, work at home or other activities, spontaneity can disappear. My therapists are golden retrievers and yes they are pretty, but they are so much more.

Though it may be inappropriate to love your therapists, I do. They have helped me to raise a family, enriched my life in so many ways and most importantly, they have taught me to give ourselves unconditionally whenever we can.

We cannot turn our backs on climate change To the Valley News: What would you like to say?: The midterm election, the most expensive ever, just sent a Republican “wave” across the country. Few or none of those winning candidates believe that global climate change is either real or manmade or needing remedy. Behind the winners, $70 million from oil and coal companies for attack ads assure there will be no legislative action.

Climate change and its rise in temperatures and violent weather patterns, does not adhere to political labels; it is faithful only to the chemistry and physics of Earth’s atmosphere. We are now near the end of the warmest decade on record, with eight of the ten hottest years occurring since the year 2000. Carbon dioxide, a gas that traps heat in our atmosphere, is at its highest level in 2 million years. Water-storing glaciers and ice caps are melting. Violent weather worldwide — fires, floods, droughts — are rising in their own waves.

Restaurants, businesses to compete in ‘Wing Wars’

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — Restaurants and businesses from around the region are once again vying to see who has the best chicken wings. And, they’re doing it to benefit a good cause.

Wing Wars will return to Wiseguys this Sunday, Nov. 14, creating a friendly competition among eight eateries wanting to take home the title of best wings. Participating businesses each provide 500 wings for attendees to chow down on during the four-hour event to benefit North Country Life Flight.

“It’s really a great event,” said Mary Jane Connors, president and chief executive officer of North Country Life Flight. “People look forward to it because it’s a lot of fun.”

The event, now in its third year, gives attendees the chance to sample wings in an all-youcan-eat format for $12. Proceeds help North Country Life Flight provide free air medical rescue service to people in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, St. Lawrence, Warren, Washington, Hamilton, Herkimer and portions of Jefferson and Lewis counties.

Events like Wing Wars make all the difference when it comes to being able to provide their service, said Connors.

“People may think $12 isn’t going to make a huge difference, but when you add that to another $12 and another $12, that’s what makes us able to fly someone,” said Connors.

“Every dime we get donated helps out.”

In its inaugural year, Wing Wars raised $595. That amount nearly tripled last year when the event raised $1,635, said Connors.

“This year, we’ll be adding some other things to help keep raising more money,” she said.

Raffles are anticipated to help add to the draw of Wing Wars, with two items especially expected to be a hit — a lightweight kayak, donated by Saratoga Eagle, distributors of

Holiday party slated in Westport

Cuts From page 1 will be replaced by Andrew Cuomo in January, pledged that his cuts would be dispersed evenly among all state agencies.

But an internal DEC memo, leaked to the press shortly before Grannis was fired, showed that Paterson intends to cut about 200 jobs from DEC – representing approximately 10 percent of statewide setbacks.

Although the memo’s author was never revealed, Grannis took the blame and was fired by one of Paterson’s top aides.

Now, lawmakers and environmentalists are scrambling to fight back, noting that Paterson’s proposed cuts could devastate an agency already coping with significant budget reductions.

Teresa Sayward is the ranking Republican on the Assembly’s Environmental Conservation Committee. She said next week’s hearing will explore the current economic state of the DEC and look ahead to next year.

Sayward said Paterson will get a first-hand look at how his proposed cuts are going to affect the agency.

“I think it’s going to be pretty focused on the impacts of the 2010-2011 state budgets, in terms of

staffing levels and programs,” she said. “The whole purpose is to review the implementation of the state budget and how that’s going to affect programs. How are we going to take care of the land with all of these staffing cuts? I’m sure the staff will be present to give their presentations on how they think they can deal with everything they have to deal with in terms of everything that’s been proposed.”

Sayward was highly critical of Paterson’s decision to fire Grannis, especially since he leaves office in less than two months.

She noted that acting Commissioner Peter Iwanowicz will be in attendance at next week’s hearing – and she’s questioning his role in the proceedings.

“Certainly, my guess is he’s going to say what the governor wants him to say – which is that these cuts need to be made because of the budget,” Sayward said.

She added that next week’s hearings could end up being little more than political theater.

“Quite frankly, to be really candid, I can’t see the purpose of this,” Sayward said. “Everything changes. Nothing that this current seated governor is going to accomplish is set-in-stone. Hopefully, he’ll take the testimony and look at what people are saying, which could be helpful. But ultimately, the game changes when Cuomo is sworn in.”

Sayward expects to sit down with North Country officials to determine the impact of Paterson’s cuts on local government ahead of next week’s hearings.

She said it’s imperative for Paterson to understand the consequences his actions could have on Adirondack communities.

‘Taste of Home’ hosted to sold-out crowd Plans in works to bring event back next year, organizers say

The first-ever Taste of Home Cooking School held in Plattsburgh was a “huge success” according to comments Denton Publications associate publisher Ed Coats said he received from the event last Saturday at the Crete Civic Center.

“I couldn’t believe how great the turnout was,” said Coats, who estimated more than 1,100 attended what turned out to be a sold out show. “I knew we’d have a really good crowd, but selling out the show was just amazing.

Taste of Home was something Coats, who organized the event, had brought to the other side of Lake Champlain for the past five years through New Market Press, a sister corporation of Denton Publications based in Vermont. However, countless requests to bring it to New York finally prompted him to try it in Plattsburgh. And, he’s glad he did.

“There’s a need for something like this here,” said Coats. “I’ve heard it over and over. People want events like this. And, this just proves that Plattsburgh and places like the Crete Civic Center can handle big events.”

The show featured more than two hours of cooking instruction from culinary specialist Michael Barna, who has conducted Taste of Home shows throughout New York, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire and New Jersey. Barna’s

playful banter with the crowd and his ability to walk attendees through easy-to-make recipes was huge for the show’s draw, said Coats.

“Michael did a great job,” said Coats. “It was nice having a chef with such an extensive background be here to give people such great demonstrations. He really wowed them.”

Having many giveaways and great support from local vendors — many of whom contributed items as raffle prizes — also lent to the success of the show, said Coats.

“We had so many great vendors with lots of different things for people to see, try and especially buy,” said Coats. “There really was something for everyone.”

Given the reaction to this year ’s event, Coats said he’s looking forward to bringing it back to Plattsburgh next year.

“We’ve had a lot of great feedback and a lot of people asking us to bring it back next year,” said Coats. “We want to expand it even more and bring in more great local vendors like we had this year, maybe do some more giveaways. We’re going to work to make it even bigger and better.”

“I really want to thank the City of Plattsburgh Recreation Department for doing such a great job helping us host this event and all our fine sponsors,” said Coats. “But, most of all, I want to thank everyone who came out to Taste of Home. They made this a true success.”

RSVP honors volunteers KEESEVILLE — The first in a series of Retired Senior Volunteer Program local recognitions was held on recently at the Knights of Columbus in Keeseville.

Because of the retirement of RSVP Director Patsy McCaughin and Office Aid AnnaBelle Waite, and with the new program volunteer coordinator, Barb Brassard coming on board, the usual county-wide recognition event wasn’t held this fall.

“Area recognitions will be planned in an attempt to enable more volunteers to attend and so I may personally meet and thank each volunteer individually,” Brassard said.

Chazy survives Warriors’ challenge

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The third-seeded Warriors had upset on their minds Nov. 6, but could not overcome Chazy in the Section VII Class D boys soccer final.

Goals by Kyle McCarthy and Kaleb Snide powered the defending state champion Eagles to their fourth straight sectional title, despite a strong showing from Willsboro.

“I liked our effort and our determination,” said Willsboro head coach Andrew Lee, noting how his team was able to generate some good scoring chances early. “We kept the intensity going.”

Both Chazy goals came off corner kicks by Jordan Barriere.

Late in the first half, Barriere sailed one across to find McCarthy, who headed a line-drive just under the crossbar.

Crafty play by Alex Hamel, Clay Sherman, and Brandon Bertrand gave the Warriors some offensive firepower throughout the game, but it was Willsboro’s defense that kept them on the Eagles’ heels.

Willsboro’s Cody Sayward made 14 saves, including a crucial stop on a penalty kick by Barriere early in the second half.

“I think he struck it well and Sayward just made a great save,” said Chazy head coach Rob McAuliffe.

The Warriors nearly had the equalizer mid-way through the second half when a Willsboro corner kick led to a shot to the top of the goal that was narrowly deflected by Chazy goalkeeper Austin Santor. A scramble in front of the net led to a scoring header by Willsboro’s John Pollock, but the goal was negated as he was called offside.

“Willsboro’s a good team and they’re well coached,” said McAuliffe. “We knew we couldn’t make many mistakes tonight, and the few times we did, Willsboro punished us for

it.”

The Eagles finally got some breathing room late in the second half when another Barriere corner kick bounced around the box before coming to the feet of Snide, who tapped it in for the insurance goal.

“We kept the momentum going and were trying to push the ball up,” said Lee. “We just didn’t do enough of a job defending the set plays.”

PLATTSBURGH — The Lady Eagles kept their perfect season going Nov. 6 with a 2-0 win against Elizabethtown-Lewis in the Section VII Class D girls soccer final.

Goals by Caitlin LaPier and Astrid Kempainen, both assisted by Chelsea Guay, lifted the Chazy girls to their seventh consecutive Section VII title as they faced their toughest challenge yet this season in the second-seeded Lions.

The Eagles came into the match ranked first in the state in Class D, having fallen just short of the title last year. They had outscored opponents 88-0 for 16 straight wins this season, but their two narrowest victories came against Elizabethtown-Lewis.

“They played us better this third game,” said Chazy head coach Karin Sherman-Trombley. “I give them a lot of credit because they were very aggressive and did not let down one bit.”

Chazy possessed the ball well with precision passing, using speed to their advantage as they kept the action on their opponent’s side for much of the game. They finished with a 23-1 shot advantage against the Lions forward Emily Morris (9) has her shot stopped by Chazy’s Megan Lions.

Sept. 17 was Constitution and Citizenship Day. Willsboro resident Kathy Hohn celebrated this year by becoming a naturalized citizen of the United States on that day. On Sept. 19, her church, WUCC, the “Old Stone Congregational Church” feted her at their coffee hour. Kathy was surprised with a large cake displaying the US Flag inscribed with “Congratulations New Citizen Kathy.” Ted Hohn, Kathy’s husband, wore a British General’s Revolutionary War uniform symbolizing Kathy’s native Canada and Peter Rowley, Sons of the American Revolution, wore the uniform of his NY State Patriot Capt. Caleb Haight and welcomed Kathy as a newly naturalized citizen. Peter read the oath of citizenship which Kathy had taken at her naturalization ceremony so everyone present could share in Kathy’s willing commitment and enthusiasm to her new country.

November 13, 2010 William Porter Brooks October 20, 1922 - November 8, 2010 BALLSTON SPA NY — William Porter Brooks, age 88, of Acorn Grove, died November 8, 2010, in Clifton Park NY, of congestive heart failure. He was born October 20, 1922 in Chicago IL, and was the son of the late Noah Reynolds and Esther Porter Brooks. Bill grew up in Dobbs Ferry, NY and spent summers as a child on Lake Champlain in and around the family “camp” in Essex, NY. He attended Westchester County public schools until age 14, when he entered Choate School in Wallingford CT. Graduating from Choate in the class of 1940, he attended Princeton University, where he was a member of the Charter Club, and the ROTC Army Field Artillery. He resigned from Princeton, and transferred to the University of Virginia. Soon thereafter, with World War II progressing, he volunteered for immediate induction, but was classified as unfit for military duty due to a congenital spine deformity. Bill then left college and went to work for the New York Central Railroad. He always said the Office of Manager of Freight Transportation was an exciting place to work during wartime, where military goods were being shipped in extraordinary quantities to extraordinary destinations in extraordinary time periods.

He married the former Mary Dunlop of Ellenville, NY in 1944, in St. Paul’s Chapel at Columbia University. For a brief time he & Mary lived in Bronxville. He and Mary then moved to Fort Wayne, IN where Bill worked for The Farnsworth Television and Radio Company, which was developing television and two-way railroad radio. He attended Indiana University at night, studying business law. Returning east in

www.thevalleynews.org 1948, he & Mary then settled in Darien CT, where they remained for 27 years. Together they raised a family, and later Mary taught junior high school English. Bill worked as a salesman for a series of paper companies, surviving six mergers, and finished his career representing the Georgia Pacific Company.

Mary died in 1973. Bill retired in 1975, and moved to one of his favorite places in the world; Essex NY, on Lake Champlain, where he renovated and winterized the family “camp”. In 1977, he married Constance Murray in St. John’s Church, Essex NY. They began traveling together, and, after many trips to the UK, decided to move there full time. Bill and Connie bought and renovated a terrace house in medieval Ludlow, Shropshire, in 1984. From there, they participated in the Ludlow community, and traveled through the British Isles and Europe.

Connie died in 2004, and in 2005, Bill returned to the US. He briefly lived in the Coburg Village retirement community in Clifton Park, NY, and then with his son Peter, in nearby Ballston Lake NY. Some of Bill’s favorite things about life were: the exciting sounds of Swing Band music; the natural beauty of Lake Champlain; and the delicious tastes of red wine and chocolate. Favorite sayings were, “I’ve been a very lucky guy”, and, after a glass of pinot noir, “I ain’t mad at nobody!”

He is survived by four children: Elizabeth “Betsy” (David) Dunlop Tisdale of Potsdam NY; Peter Reynolds (Tina Lyons) Brooks of Ballston Lake NY; Stephen Converse Brooks of Charlotte VT; and Marcia Parker (Edward Hammond) Brooks of Milwaukee WI. He also was quite proud to have eight grandchildren; Christopher McCamic of Rochester NY; Morgan Brooks of Norfolk VA; Margaret Brooks of Arlington VA; David Brooks of Ballston Lake NY; Berkeley Brooks of Burlington VT; Bentley Brooks of St. Augustine FL; Hen-

District to consider closing Lake Colby School

By Chris Morris denpubs@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — Officials from the Saranac Lake Central School District announced last week a committee is looking into the potential closure of Lake Colby School.

This comes on the heels of last year ’s closure of Lake Clear Elementary School.

Superintendent Jerry Goldman said declining school enrollment and a dicey economic climate contributed to the district’s decision to explore the school’s potential closure.

Lake Colby School is a small, three-class school serving about 60 kindergarten and universal pre-K students within the state’s largest geographical school district.

In year ’s past, Lake Colby has fielded at least four kindergarten classes.

Goldman said declining state aid and smaller class sizes have led administration to — quote — “seriously consider” closing the school.

He added both kindergarten classes can be folded into the district’s Petrova Elementary School, while pre-K students would be sent to Bloomingdale Elementary School.

“If we can do that, it would be financially advantageous for us — and it wouldn’t result in any larger class sizes or anything like that,” Goldman said.

Goldman anticipates the district would save a significant chunk of money by closing Lake Colby, although he says it’s too early to talk about specific numbers.

He noted shuttering the school wouldn’t result in any staffing reductions.

Last year, the district closed down Lake Clear Elementary School — leading to some public outcry from parents and teachers. Goldman expects similar disappointment if the committee opts to move forward with closing Lake Colby.

“People like Lake Colby — it’s like the ‘Little House on the Prairie’ school,” he said. “But, on the other hand, they’re only there for one year, for the most part. I don’t think they develop the same sense of community at Lake Colby as they did at Lake Clear. They could have been at Lake Clear for four years — kindergarten through third grade. Plus Lake Clear was, clearly, a neighborhood school for all of the families out there.”

Goldman also believes taxpayers are more in tune with the financial realities faced by school districts in New York.

“We’re in a different economic environment than we were two years ago,” he said. “I think have a sense that we need to look everywhere to save money. It’s better to save money by doing things like this, rather than lay off people we really need.”

Following last year ’s closure of Lake Clear, the district leased the building to the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

Goldman anticipates that if the closure moves forward, officials will also consider leasing Lake Colby School.

The perfect hunt

T

he big buck appeared like a shadow in the early morning Manitoba light, and began methodically making his way toward my stand, stopping occasionally to test the wind or nose the ground for signs of danger or other deer.

It is easy to allow your mind to wonder during the hours of solitude spent in the forest — picturing the ideal spot for a monster whitetail to make an entrance.

I think we all do it — envision which route or trail an experienced brute might take — visualize him walking through a sliver of light along a faint runway carved into the forest floor.

On this morning, I don’t think I could have scripted it better.

He first came into sight like a ghost emerging from a tangle of dense brush — exactly as I had envisioned an experienced deer would. Then, he strode proudly along a well-used trail that promised to bring him easily within bow range.

“He’s a nice buck, I am definitely going to take him,” I whispered to my hunting partner, Mike Fenoff, as I eased my way into a solid shooting position.

I caught a glint of antler at 60 yards, and took a deep breath to calm my nerves.

While some shots with a bow happen as quickly as it takes to raise and draw, others seem to unfold like a television drama.

This was proving more the latter, giving me almost too much time to mull the shot while nervously willing the deer on.

For the moment at least, he continued to steadily close ground.

Then, just as it seemed the buck would emerge under my stand, the heavy eightpointer seemed to vanish into the thick Canadian bush as quickly as he appeared.

“Where did he go?” I said in a hushed tone and Mike answered remorsefully, “I don’t know.”

It was the fourth morning of a fullyguided bow hunt in Minnedosa, Manitoba.

Mike had tagged out a few days earlier on a dandy 11-pointer with gnarly dark antlers and then offered to man a video camera in hopes of capturing my hunt on tape.

Our guide was Ernie Noordenbos of Little Saskatchewan Outfitters. Both Ernie and his son, Kevin, are disabled — Ernie from a fall while working as a heavy equipment mechanic and Kevin from a car accident that left him comatose and then with a life-altering brain injury.

Ironically, it was our disabilities that brought us together.

Because of his personal experience and family history, Ernie believes strongly in

helping those with physical limitations.

For this reason, he offers discounts to members of the Physically Challenged Bowhunters Association, of which I am a member.

It was this common affiliation that led to me booking a hunt with Ernie, and I’ve been two years waiting anxiously to make it happen.

Because of my left hand paralysis, Manitoba also gave me the opportunity to use a crossbow during its regular archery season.

New York is not as permissive with the use of crossbows among its state’s disabled hunters — only paraplegics who fire with assistance from a blow tube are allowed to use them during our archery season.

We saw 17 deer the first day in Manitoba, which was capped by Mike downing his largest buck ever with a bow, or any other firearm for that matter.

Then, a nasty cold front weather forecasters compared to a category three hurricane settled in bringing sleet, snow and 50 mph wind. Needless to say, deer activity tapered dramatically and I was beginning to question my chances of filling my tag.

That is, until the heavy eight made an appearance.

But, the deer had vanished into the same

My hunting partner Mike Fenoff dropped this dandy 11-pointer with his bow in Manitoba, unfortunately the coyotes and wolves found it before we did and there was very little meat left.

Pictured above is the large 8-pointer I harvested with a crossbow while hunting with Little Saskatchewan Outfitters in Manitoba this fall. Fortunately, he was never far away.

Just minutes after the deer had ducked into the bush, he reappeared, this time intent on following the runway two does had taken earlier, directly under our stand.

As Mike videotaped, the deer made his way to within 50 yards, then 40, then 30. At 25 yards, I stopped him with a bleat and sent an arrow home. The shot was true and he dropped in sight.

It has been said that harvesting a mature whitetail with a bow cannot be described, only felt by those who have earned the feeling.

I could not have said it better myself.

The Sr. Program Assistant will work closely with ADAC administrative staff to ensure sound financial oversight of program.

Daily responsibilities will include assisting with activities of daily living and direct personal care, implementation of therapeutic recreation activities to include arts and crafts, music, and cognitive activities. The successful candidate must have good written and oral communication skills. A clean driver’s license, spanning a five year period is also required. Applicants who have earned an associate degree are preferred; however, those with a high school diploma are also encouraged to apply. All applicants must

possess, at minimum, one full year of direct care experience with memory impaired elder adults or developmentally disabled adults.
