ELIZABETHTOWN — County officials voted to forego a plan to seek sale offers for Horace Nye Nursing Home as supporters of the facility urged them to keep its operation in public hands.

At their regular board meeting Nov. 1, Essex County supervisors voted 10-4 against a resolution to contract with a real estate broker to seek private buyers for the home, effectively putting a halt to efforts to privatize it.

The same meeting opened with two guest speakers, both of whom presented strong cases for keeping the facility public.

First to speak was Willsboro resident Barbara Paye, who brought along her father, Harris Young, an 87-year-old World War II veteran, who has been a resident at Horace Nye for the past nine years.

As a partial Medicaid recipient, Young suffered from Alzheimer's and was initially placed in a private nursing home, Paye said, but moved to Horace Nye after management there made plans to transfer him to a facility in Massachusetts because they could not effectively care for him.

“I firmly believe that the same high level of care cannot be received at a private nursing home facility,” said Paye.

Katrinka Trombley, a registered nurse at Horace Nye, also attested to its superior quality of care compared to the private facil-

ities she’s also worked at during her 35-year career.

“Horace Nye not only meets state standards, it exceeds state standards,” she said.

“Private facilities struggle to meet state standards.”

Having received three separate offers to broker the possible sale of the nursing home, supervisors debated a plan to let the Marcus & Millichap firm put the facility up for sale at a price of roughly $4.5 million.

The agreement would provide for a 3.25percent commission to the broker, roughly $157,000, which the county would have to pay should any offer come in at the asking price, regardless of whether they ultimately approved the sale.

Many supervisors spoke against the resolution, arguing more should be done first to try to cut costs at Horace Nye, one of the few non-mandated services that’s included in a 2011 tentative budget that amounts to a 30percent tax levy increase.

Jay supervisor Randy Douglas, Wilmington supervisor Randy Preston, North Elba supervisor Roby Politi, and Newcomb supervisor George Canon each voted in favor of the resolution with the other 10 supervisors present voting against it.

St. Armand supervisor Joyce Morency, Minerva supervisor Sue MontgomeryCorey, Elizabethtown supervisor Noel Merrihew, and Schroon supervisor Cathy Moses were all absent for the vote.

I

've been sharing my experiences in EMS class with readers recently, and one thing I mentioned a few columns ago is how, for me at least, emergency response always seems to come back to the idea of community. No one exemplified that idea more than Chuck Bertsche, a longtime member of the Westport Emergency Squad and our highest-ranking EMT, whose passing last week came as a terrible blow not only to his family and friends, but also to the squad and to our community as a whole.

In his eloquent service for Chuck at the Federated Church, Pastor Leon Hebrink said his grief was sharpened by the fact he was just getting to know Chuck better—after a casual acquaintanceship, they had only recently broke the ice and now a deeper friendship was emerging. He was looking forward to the next conversation.

As a new member of the squad, I began going on ambulance runs about a year ago.

I hadn't met Chuck before, but I noticed immediately that when he arrived on a scene, more experienced squad members whose judgment I respected always de-

ferred to him. Only gradually, as I went on more runs and squad meetings, did I begin to realize how important Chuck was in the smooth functioning of the Emergency Squad.

I remember one run with Chuck this past summer. We were returning from the hospital in the back of the ambulance together and realized that we had a common interest in books and ideas. It was our first real conversation and it was all too brief. Like Pastor Leon, I was looking forward to the next one.

In his work as a teacher at WCS, and as an advanced EMT for our squad and for CVPH, Chuck touched (and saved) many lives. Chuck's widow, Judy, has generously offered to donate his collection of EMS-related books to the Emergency Squad, to create a sort of lending library for EMS students and others. Chuck's legacy of teaching and helping others will live on. If you'd like to be part of that legacy, perhaps you'd consider a donation in Chuck's memory to the Westport Emergency Squad. Or even joining. Heaven knows, we need you now more than ever.

he month of thanksgiving is upon us leaving just one more before a whole new year. Not ready to think about that yet nor the fact that when I took my dog, who no longer smells like a skunk, for which I am certainly thankful, out Sunday morning it was to the sight of snow on the ground. Really not ready for that yet. But I guess that comes with living in the North Country!

A thank you to all that turned out to vote this past Tuesday. Good luck to all the future leaders of our area. Personally, I am looking forward to a much emptier mailbox and much less ringing of the phone.

Each year the campaigning deluge seems to get closer and closer to being a serious trespass of my privacy. But maybe that’s just me.

I want to thank George Armstrong, who e-mailed a very interesting story concerning the suspended bridge here in town.

Our community is rich in historical lore dating back to the time of the Native

Americans through the first settlements to the utilization of the AuSable River for resources and certainly on to the present. I plan to do some more research on this and other such stories to see what I can turn into a writing piece. If anyone else has any interesting historical information regarding our area please feel free to drop me a line.

The Nazarene Church is working very hard on the first festival of trees and this promises to be a real neat event.

With a fairly large Catholic community in Keeseville it might be worth noting Bishop LaValley will again be in our area down the road celebrating the annual diocese Harvest Mass this year Sunday Nov. 7, 1 p.m. at St. Augustine’s in Peru. I’ve had the pleasure of attending this mass before, and it is a wonderful event and very much worth attending.

So time to plan our thanks and get set for some more of that fluffy white stuff.

t was such a pleasure the first of the week to drive down the street like it was a yellow tunnel, especially as the sun was shining. Most of the leaves are off the trees now, and I saw my first flight of Canadian geese fly over. Then sadness hit on the street at the sudden death of Lauren Choate. He will be greatly missed by many as he was involved for so many years with the mining industry here in Willsboro.

Then, in the same week, I found l myself taking a quick trip to the hospital where I spent three to four days. I missed Halloween, but there is always next year, It was also nice to see the town crews redoing the skating rink at the Foley/Lee Park, many of our local children do enjoy playing there in all seasons. Hope you noticed Ann and Sam Marcotte’s new home

improvement.

Elections will be behind us by the time you read this and it will be great not to have those TV ads over and over. Hope you got to see the hay wagon with some of the Republicans going through the community this past weekend encouraging people to get out to vote.

y vegetable garden is pretty well done for the season, with just a couple of rows of spinach left to overwinter under a row cover tent. I planted garlic last week, picked the last of the cilantro to make a salsa, and put the rain gauge away.

I do most of the cooking at our house, and lately I’ve been on a lasagna kick. I make my own pasta with a hand-cranked stainless steel pasta machine. The key to good pasta is in the eggs. You want the freshest and tastiest eggs you can find, and luckily such eggs are readily available from any number of farmers. I get mine from a self-serve farm stand in Willsboro where the hens are free to stroll around the yard. The only other ingredient in my pasta is good quality flour.

You make a dough, knead it for at least five minutes, and run it through the machine, with the rollers set very close together. Cut the sheets of pasta to fit your pan, and then turn your attention to the

filling. Most recipes have you boil the pasta before assembly, but I don’t bother with that. Classical lasagna usually has a white sauce and ricotta as components, but in my opinion, these make the dish heavy and dull. My favorite recipe has you sprinkle lemon zest over the bottom of the pan, and then add many thin layers of pasta spread with a simple tomato and cream sauce. Top it off with a last layer of pasta and a good sprinkling of parmesan. I’ve tried American parmesans, but they are inferior to the real thing, and if you’re going to this much effort, don’t skimp on the cheese.

Now that the lawn has stopped growing (finally) and the leaves are gone, I’m taking a road trip to see my children and mother. The kids are in Austin and my mother lives on Mobile Bay in Alabama.

Although neither place is known for its lasagna, Texas barbeque and Gulf shrimp more than make up for that deficit. I’ll report back on any culinary delights encountered along the way.

Four Loco: another adult drink marketed to children ecently, a spotlight has been fixed on Four Loco, what the manufacturer touts as a “premium caffeinated alcoholic beverage.” The drink is designed to be a 15-year-old’s alcohol dream in my estimation.

When young people begin to drink alcohol, they notice right away that it doesn’t taste very good. Four Loco has solved that problem by loading the drink with sugar and flavors include watermelon, lemonade, berry and orange. The drink is a full 23.5 ounces and has over 600 super sweet calories. I wonder if there really are adults feverishly hunting for super sweet alcohol that is watermelon flavored?

When children drink, they usually don’t hang around their house getting drunk while mom and dad watch, they have different drinking behaviors than most adults. Children must drink as much alcohol as possible in the shortest period of time.

Four Loco has thought of that too. Each can provides 12% alcohol content, about three times the rate of regular beer.

As children drink alcohol they often experience a sedation effect and will become sleepy or sometimes just fall asleep after several drinks. The makers thought of that too. In order to keep the consumers awake, they infused the drink with the stimulant compounds taurine, guarana and caffeine so that more of their product can be consumed. For some, the stimulant effect may be dangerous or potentially fatal in sufficient quantities.

The manufacturers also considered that children usually don’t have a lot of money to spend on al-

cohol, if you guessed that the makers thought of that too, you would be correct. The makers have made their product relatively cheap when compared to other alcoholic drinks. A 23.5By Scot Hurlburt ounce can of Four Loco costs $1.99 to $3 depending on where it is sold. Some stores sell the product in a four pack that averages about $9.

Finally, the makers have made the can look like other non-alcohol energy drinks. It may be possible that Four Loco could be in a refrigerator without a parent noticing it. Again, the makers thought of everything.

Now young people are showing up in hospital emergency rooms after consuming Four Loco with alcohol poisoning or near-poisoning. A blood/alcohol reading of .30 is considered potentially fatal and some of those high numbers are being seen.

Young people have been overdosing on alcohol for years and Four Loco is not the first maker to mix stimulants with alcohol, however, they have made it too cheap, too sugary and appealing to underage drinkers, too loaded with stimulants, too big in size and too much stealth in packaging the product. If there is a product that is more shameless in its marketing activities aimed at underage drinkers I am unaware of it. Remember, all kids count.

ELIZABETHTOWN — Robert M Eddy, 81, of Dugan Lane, Elizabethtown died Saturday, Oct. 30 at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt. He was born Jan. 7, 1929 in Willsboro, N.Y., the son of Robert and Elizabeth (Denton) Eddy.

Bob was an avid golfer who held claim to three hole-in-ones in his career; two at Cobble Hill golf course, where he had been a member for many years, and one in St. Augustine, Fla. He also enjoyed NASCAR and was a big fan of Dale Earnhart.

Bob was a employee of New York Telephone, working in Elizabethtown, Plattsburgh and Glens Falls, eventually working his way up to management, before his retirement in 1985.

He is survived his two sons and a daughter in law, Bob “Butch” and Val Eddy of Glens Falls, N.Y., and Kenneth Eddy of Elizabethtown; one daughter and son-in -law, Linda and Greg Hurley of Plattsburgh; four grandchildren, PJ, Stephanie, Travis,and Robby Eddy; and three great grandchildren, Andrew and Piper Eddy, and Jeffery Woodell. He was predeceased by his parents and his wife, Patricia (Partridge) Eddy.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, Nov. 3 from 6-8 p.m. at W.M.Marvin's Sons funeral home in Elizabethtown. A Graveside service will be held Thursday, Nov 4. at noon at Norton Cemetery in Keene.

TICONDEROGA — Margaret “Peggy” Kirsner passed away Oct. 24 at Heritage Nursing Home in Ticonderoga after a long illness. Peggy was born Feb. 27, 1929 in Alba, Tex., the daughter of Col. James A. Mayes.

She leaves behind her husband, David, of 56 years. She is also survived by their son, Daniel, and his wife, Angel, of Missouri; her sister-in-law, Jean Hoffman, and her husband, William, of Colchester, Vt.; her nephew, William Hoffman, Jr., with his wife, Cheryl, and four children, Benjamin, Sarah, Nicholas and Joseph of Pleasant Valley, N.Y.; her niece, Susan Chase, and her husband, Daniel, and daughter, Bethany, of Southbridge, Mass.; and also several cousins-in-law.

Peggy was a transplant from Texas that definitely took root up here in the North Country. When her husband, David, returned with her to his hometown of Elizabethtown, N.Y., in 1959, she settled right in and was involved in a variety of activities which included, among other things, bookkeeping, running a dress store, and working as a nurse’s aid.

In 1965, they moved to Ticonderoga, and she continued pursuing her interest in writing as a columnist for the Times of Ti, as well as working as a real estate broker. She was a devoted wife and mother, and she will be missed by all who knew her.

Peggy’s family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at the Heritage Nursing Home for their wonderful, loving care of Peggy and her family. They made her last days as peaceful as possible.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Nov. 12,

1 p.m. at Ticonderoga Cornerstone Alliance Church, 175 Montcalm St., Ticonderoga, N.Y. Donations in Peggy’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society.

on the two main streets of the village. This addition, together with the bright appearance of the newly renovated Baptist church grounds, will afford a very pleasing view from the Insti-tute building, and will materially beautify that portion of the town.

Essex County Republican 1897 An Adirondack correspondent writes that the new law against hounding and floating for deer has made the capture of the game so difficult that comparatively few deer have been taken this season. A month still remains to hunt deer, the season closing the middle of next month. Last year a great many deer were shipped from Beaver station, there being about 160 sent out during the first week of the season. Less than ten were shipped during the corresponding week this year. Up to the present time there have been between 25 and 30 sent by express. Of course more deer have been killed, but quite a few have supplied venison for the tables of the hotels and camps in the woods. There are plenty of deer in the woods, but the trouble lies in capturing them without the aid of dogs by day and “jacks” by night. However, all true sportsmen are enthusiastic over the new law and say it should have been enacted long ago. The sport of capturing deer is greater by still hunting and the animals are protected from dogs. They are larger and fatter and their flesh is juicier and tenderer than when run by dogs.

Shirley Lawas MIDLAND PARK, N.J. — Shirley (McDonald) Lawas, 76, of Midland Park, N.J., formerly of Keene Valley, N.Y., and Plattsburgh, N.Y., passed away Saturday, Oct. 23.

She was the beloved wife of the late Ernest F. Lawas, Sr.; loving mother of the late Adam Lawas and his surviving wife, Christine, of Canandaigua, N.Y., Kristine Lawas-Herzberg and husband Jack of Ridgewood, N.J., Ethan Lawas of Saratoga, N.Y., and Ernest F. Lawas, Jr. and Nancy Simm of Simsbury, Conn.; and cherished grandmother of Eli Lawas, Emma Herzberg, Zachary Lawas, Jacklyn Herzberg and Lucas Lawas.

During the Korean War, Shirley worked as a secretary in a naval hospital office, then went on to own and operate the Ark Lodge in Upper Jay, N.Y. Shirley also worked as a secretary for the Essex County Department of Social Services in Elizabethtown, N.Y. for 20 years. In recent years, she has been an active and involved resident of Mill Gardens in Midland Park, N.J. The agony of victory ver the course of my storied athletic career, I’ve run in literally several races. True, a handful of said races were actually fun runs, but fun runs are just what losers call races they know they stand as much chance of winning as the English language stands of surviving a Sarah Palin speech with its dignity intact.

I’m kidding, of course. While Sarah Palin does lack even a rudimentary grasp of English, fun runs are positive activities organized by and for upstanding, fitness-conscious citizens. Still, even the staunchest fun run supporter has to adBy Dan Leonidas mit that fun runs attract people who fear competition – not losers, exactly, but the kind of athlete one might describe as “victory-challenged.”

As a result, you don’t get much for finishing first in a fun run: no comically oversized check, no lucrative corporate endorsements – not even something useless masquerading as something valuable, like a blue ribbon, or a copy of Sarah Palin’s bestselling doorstop “Going Rogue.”

See, fun-run enthusiasts subscribe to the un-American philosophy that everyone is “a winner.” Thus, they insist that finishing first is no better than finishing last, so long as you “gave it your all” and “enjoyed yourself.”

Poppycock, I say – or would have said before this past August’s Olga Memorial Race in Saranac Lake. The Olga Race is actually a race – not a fun run – so I signed up with visions of comically oversized checks and lucrative corporate endorsements dancing in my head.

I didn’t expect to win the entire race, of course (while I might suffer from delusions of grandeur, I ain’t no moron), but I did hope to win my age division. That hope almost died when, during the second half of the 10-kilometer course, a dude who looked suspiciously like a dude in his 20s passed me. That was bad enough, but what made it infinitely worse was that he was pushing a stroller – with a child in it – and he beat me.

Luckily, the guy turned out to be in his 30s, and I won my division. Still, I didn’t feel like a winner – because while I might’ve given it my all, the humiliation of losing to an elderly man pushing a stroller obliterated any chance I had of enjoying myself.

Paintball field makes eco-friendly moves CLINTONVILLE — One of the area’s most well-established paintball fields is stepping up their game when it comes to being eco-friendly.

Tiger Stripe Paintball, located on Route 9N just north of Clintonville, has recently upgraded some of its equipment and supplies to products that are not only greener, but provide a better quality recreational experience to their customers.

Keeseville resident Ken Eckhardt has owned and operated Tiger Stripe since 1996 as one of few facilities in the North Country devoted exclusively to one of the fastest growing sports in America.

The seven fields at their approximately 20-acre property have since attracted hundreds of local residents and visitors alike looking for a realistic outdoor setting to play paintball, a variant of traditional “capture-the-flag” games where players on opposing teams “tag” each other with small, liquid-filled balls propelled from air-powered guns.

“It's really great to have a place where you can play structured games on fields with a lot of character,” said Jim Francesconi, a Plattsburgh resident who plays regularly at Tiger Stripe as captain of The Ferrymen, a paintball team that has participated in tournaments across the Northeast, “and this is the cheapest field to play anywhere.”

“We like it to be woods so people can get a feel

of being in the wilderness,” Eckhardt said.

And it’s the vitality of that outdoor setting Eckhardt had in mind when deciding to spend a little more to reduce his business’s environmental impact.

One of the major steps Tiger Stripe has taken has been to switch to newly developed “Eco-Fill” environmentally-friendly paintballs.

Most paintballs are spherical gelatin capsules filled with a non-toxic, biodegradable combination of glycols, plant-based oils, and dyes. They are virtually harmless to humans and have little impact on the environment, but some have been known to attract animals or leave unsightly stains, and, in large quantities, they can reduce the quality of soil and groundwater, thereby inhibiting plant growth.

As the popularity of paintball has grown over the years, so has the variety of paintballs available and the number of places that sell them.

“But being as how we are a paintball facility, I want do to things that are more friendly to the ecosystem,” Eckhardt said.

The “Eco-Fill” paintballs contain no oils and are entirely water-soluble, so they biodegrade faster and completely.

Considering how Tiger Stripe goes through about 120,000 paintballs per month during the peak of their season, that marginal improvement can go a long way.

“The CO2 is a liquid that is changed into a gas,” Eckhardt said. “If you keep shooting, then the CO2 gets colder and it becomes less efficient. With compressed air, it stays pretty much the same.”

According to Eckhardt, compressed air has historically been used only by the most passionate of paintball enthusiasts because that more consistent velocity came at a significantly higher price.

A refillable compressed air tank might cost up to eight times as much as tanks that store liquid carbon dioxide.

“Now the price has gone down to where the average person can afford to use the compressed air tanks instead of the CO2 tanks,” he said, noting the compressed air tanks still cost at least twice as much.

While he still keeps carbon dioxide refills on

hand for those that use them, Eckhardt said more and more of his customers are using compressed air and enjoying the added benefits to their game.

“It’s definitely not cheaper, but the overall product is better, and the impact to the environment is a factor, too,” Eckhardt said of the change.

“Not that it hurts a lot, but whatever [carbon dioxide] we can save is benefiting the environment.”

As Tiger Stripe nears the end of yet another season of paintball, Eckhardt said he is continuing to look for ways to minimize impact to the natural surroundings that help provide the kind of rustic, outdoorsy atmosphere he strives to deliver to his customers.

The farm is named for its prior owner, who donated the large property to Cornell University in 1980. Farm manager Michael Davis has overseen a wide variety of applied agricultural research there for the past 14 years.

“What we try to do is push the envelope and show what is practical and what isn’t,” he said.

Most recently, the farm has provided a major boost to a sprouting North Country wine industry through its cold-hardy grape trial.

The experiment was initiated in 2005 as a collaboration between Cornell Cooperative Extension, experts from Cornell University and a handful of enthusiastic Champlain Valley grape growers. It featured 300 vines representing 25 different wine grape varieties; 12 red and 13 white.

“Some of them are experimental and not yet commercially available,” said Davis, “but some of them are pretty widely used, and we just wanted to see how they would do in a tough North Country Climate.”

Not only did every one of the plants survive, but they produced fruit beyond everyone’s expectations.

“What they were able to get for yields off of this is incredibly high,” said Davis, noting how the trial produced, on average, three to four times as many marketable grapes per acre as the average vineyard.

“They’re bountiful, but they’re also very high quality.”

Winemaker Richard Lamoy, who operates

Hid-In-Pines vineyard in Morrisonville and has played a major role in managing the Willsboro trial, won medals for six different wines he submitted last fall to a winemaking competition in Manchester, Vt. Five of the six were crafted with grapes harvested from the Baker Research Farm.

While the grape-growing conditions at Baker Research Farm are some of the most ideal in the North Country, said Davis, the success of the trial thus far has been very encouraging for those who would like to make winemaking more prevalent in the Champlain Valley.

“I think anything we can do to diversify agriculture around here is a plus,” said Davis, adding the addition of wineries could encourage tourism in the region.

The cold-hardy grape trial may have significant implications locally, but other research conducted at the Baker Farm may have a more far-reaching impact.

Researchers at Cornell University used 18 years worth of data collected at the Willsboro site to develop Adapt-N, a software tool designed to help farmers better manage nitrogen levels in their soils.

“Corn gets nitrogen from a number of sources and there are many ways nitrogen can get lost from the root zone as a result of weather-related factors,” Cornell University Crop and Soil Sciences senior sesearch associate Jeff Melkonian said in a press release.

“The Adapt-N tool provides corn growers with more precise, field-specific nitrogen recommendations based on the impact of early season weather.”

the past 20 years, used a system of lysimeters to measure nitrogen content in water lost through the soil in 52 separate 50-footby-50-foot corn plots. Each plot represents different combinations of soil composition and tilling techniques and undergoes different schedules of fertilizer application.

According to Davis, the observations have allowed scientists to better predict nitrogen loss depending on how fields are tilled, what type of fertilizer is used, and when it is applied in relation to precipitation.

That knowledge, which is built into the new Adapt-N software, will allow farmers to use fertilizer more efficiently, Davis said.

“It not only optimizes the production and profitability of the farms,” he said, “but also minimizes the amount of phosphorus and nitrogen that’s allowed to be carried off-site and cause pollution to groundwater, lakes and streams.”

Several other research projects are ongoing at the farm, including trial plots testing different varieties of wheat, soybeans, and even switchgrass for use as biofuel pellets.

Future activity at the farm faces some uncertainty, however, as its major source of funding, the state-sponsored Northern New York Agriculture Development Program, is facing some significant cuts in the coming year. NNYADP has long supported research at Willsboro and other sites designed to benefit farmers in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, St. Lawrence, Jefferson, and Lewis counties.

Paul Smiths to launch new program Natural resources sustainability degree puts students where the jobs are

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com PAUL SMITHS — Officials at Paul Smiths College have announced plans to offer a new degree program for students looking to make a career out of going green.

The new major in natural resources sustainability will produce graduates with the tools needed to compete for a growing number of jobs that call for skills spanning the sciences, business and policy.

“Whether it’s green construction, sustainable agriculture or energy development, we’ll be providing students with hands-on experiences as they develop the skills they’ll need to lead this growing conversation on sustainability,” said Dr. David Patrick, a Paul Smith’s College professor who is coordinator of the new program.

According to Patrick, more and more companies are seek-

ing consultants and staff who can help their organization become more eco-friendly and less energy-dependent while simultaneously improving their bottom line.

“It’s an area in which the possibilities are growing incredibly rapidly,” he said, “and one of the things as a college we need to do is be adaptable and to make sure we’re providing for the needs of our students.”

A 2009 study by the Pew Charitable Trusts seems to back Patrick’s claim, noting jobs in the clean energy economy grew two-and-a-half times faster in the U.S. than all other jobs between 1998 and 2007, and many expect that expansion to continue.

“A good number of students have expressed interest,” said Patrick, noting two prospective students have already submitted applications to pursue the degree. As many as 60 students are expected to enroll in the program within a few years.

Paul Smiths is an ideal place to study sustainability, said

Patrick, mainly because the interdisciplinary field fits in well with its major existing programs, which focus on ecological sciences, natural resource management, and business.

Also, being in the Adirondacks will allow sustainability students to be exposed to the many real-life efforts in green construction and business practices found here and the people who helped implement them, Patrick added, thereby supporting the college’s mission of experiential learning.

Introduction of the new degree follows a host of sustainability measures taken by Paul Smith’s College in recent years. College officials have pledged to eventually eliminate greenhouse gas emissions, and all new construction, including a new residence hall currently being added, is to be built to LEED standards.

“We want to make sustainability what we teach,” said Patrick; “that it becomes a part of our ethos, and it’s not just some information that we’re transferring.”

WHALLONSBURG — On Saturday, Nov. 6, the Champlain Valley Film Society presents “The Secret in Their Eyes,” winner of the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award. Lake Placid thespians present ‘Our Town’

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — The students of the Lake Placid Central School Drama Club will show off their raw acting skills as they present the well-known Thorton Wilder drama “Our Town” Nov. 11-13.

More than 20 students are involved in the production, most of them seniors who have participated in many shows. They began rehearsal for Our Town at the end of September.

According to the play’s director, English teacher Brenden Gotham, many of the plays in recent years have been comedies, so he thought it was time to try something different.

“I chose Our Town this year because I felt this year's senior class needed to [do] a drama before they left,” said Gotham. “I am so proud of this group of seniors and I thought this show could challenge them in various ways.”

Lake Placid senior Alec Marchuck, who plays the central narrative role of the Stage Manager in Our Town, agreed the play has a much more serious slant than past productions, and the cast has been challenged to display emotions they have never been asked to convey before.

“I think the audience will enjoy the production because we have a wonderful cast,” said Marchuck, “and it tells a profound, yet entertaining story revolving around characters living in a small town.”

Set in a quaint Massachusetts town in the 1930s, “Our Town” takes a pensive look at some of life’s biggest questions through the

“daily lives” of some of the town’s residents.

Central to the story are the characters of George Gibbs and Emily Webb. The play shows them interacting as children, then as newlyweds, and finally in death.

“The play conveys that people should stop and treasure those seemingly trivial instances in their lives, because it can make all the difference in the long run,” said Marchuck.

Not only is Our Town a true drama, but it is traditionally performed with almost no scenery or props. Each setting is abstractly described by the Stage Manager.

“It has been challenging for the students to accept the ‘minimal’ idea, but it has made them better actors,” Gotham said. “It certainly is different for them, but they are doing really well. It’s what theatre is all about; connecting with the audience.”

Computer teacher Tom Dodd will assist with lights and technical direction while home and consumer sciences teacher Marsha Roy and retired teacher Peggy Plank are in charge of costumes. Library assistant Pattie McConvey has also been assisting with the production.

Performances are scheduled for Nov. 1113, at 7 p.m. in the Lake Placid Middle-High School auditorium. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students with proceeds to benefit the Bridget Stewart Scholarship Fund and the drama club.

“Balancing soccer, cross country,volleyball, the dessert theatre, school work, and work is an accomplishment,” said Gotham.

“I love that our students do so much and still perform at a high level. I hope people get to see the kids perform because of their hard work.”

Willsboro native wins architecture award PHILADELPHIA — Karen Blanchard, AIA, LEED AP, was named this year ’s recipient of AIA Philadelphia’s 2010 Young Architect Award at the organization’s Annual Design Awards ceremony Oct. 13.

Initiated in 1987 by the Philadelphia Chapter of The American Institute of Architects, the award is bestowed upon a young architect “of exceptional achievement for past accomplishment and future promise.”

A graduate of Philadelphia University with a bachelor of architecture degree, Blanchard was named associate within two years of joining architectural firm Wallace, Roberts & Todd, having been quickly recognized for her unique design skills and project dedication.

Blanchard has played a leading design role on numerous WRT projects. Her recent notable project work includes the design of the Levitt Pavilion in Bethlehem, Penn., the Germantown Academy Upper and Middle School in Fort Washington, Penn., and the Haverford Township Free Library in Haverford, Penn.

“Karen elevates the design quality of our projects through her thoughtful and collaborative design approach and skillful three-dimensional representations of the team’s design Karen Blanchard ideas,” said WRT principal Maarten Pesch, AIA. Blanchard grew up in Willsboro and graduated at the top of her class at Willsboro Central School in 1993. She is the daughter of Larry and Jocelyne Blanchard of Willsboro.

Pok-O-MacCready event brings history to life WILLSBORO — A program offered at PokO-MacCready Outdoor Education Center will help participants learn about a fascinating period in local history by allowing them a unique chance to experience it for themselves.

The facility will host its annual Underground Railroad event Friday, Nov. 12, from 6:30-9 p.m. where people of all ages can step back in time as escaped slaves trying to make their way through New York to freedom in

Canada.

Participants will make their way through the grounds of the nearby 1812 Homestead, a living history museum with which the summer camp is affiliated.

Meanwhile, Pok-O-MacCready staff will don 1850s-style costumes to take on the roles of bounty hunters, townspeople, magistrates, and abolitionists, all of whom will have a deciding impact on the fate of the “fugitives.”

Pok-O-MacCready has produced the oneday event each year since 2003 for the youth participating in its programming.

Roman comedy comes to Willsboro stage

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com WILLSBORO — The Willsboro Drama Club is gearing up to present their version of Broadway’s most famous toga party, complete with music and dancing.

A cast of 25 students and two adults will perform the Stephen Sondheim musical “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” Nov. 11-14, at Willsboro Central School.

“Forum,” one of Sondheim’s most lighthearted comedies, tells the farcical story of a Roman slave named Psudolus who tries to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door. They carry out half-baked plans using potions, disguises, and fake funerals, lending to an almost constant barrage of situational comedy and witty one-liners.

Willsboro teacher Derrick Hopkins, who directs the production, has an affinity for Sondheim musicals, and chose this one for its superb, witty humor.

“I wanted something really funny and there is no musical out there funnier than Fo-

rum,” said Hopkins. “I knew I’d have a strong core of actors, and Forum allows me to feature many students.”

The 1962 Broadway show features some very recognizable songs, including “Comedy Tonight,” “Lovely,” and “Everybody Ought to Have a Maid.”

As a new addition this year, piano accompaniment for the singing students will be bolstered by a small pit orchestra.

“I know that Willsboro’s new music teacher and our music director, Jennifer Moore, is very enthusiastic about providing our students with the opportunity to sing with a variety of instruments this production,” said Hopkins.

Many of the actors in the show have experience on stage. All but three of the cast members have performed in past WDC productions.

“I’m most proud of the students,” said Hopkins. “It has been a difficult process learning the nuances of farce in such a short time and they have really stepped up to the challenge.”

New resource opens for local business owners

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — Business owners in the Adirondacks now have a new place to go for support.

The Adirondack Business Center, located at 141 River St., hosted an open house event Oct. 30, to mark its grand opening as the newest resource for North Country entrepreneurs.

The facility is a joint project of Clarkson University’s Center for Entrepreneurship and the Adirondack Initiative for Wired Work, which is also hosted by Clarkson.

“The goal of the center is to really become the model for rural economic development,” said Erin Draper, associate director of the Entrepreneurship Center.

According to Draper, Clarkson chose the the Saranac Lake site because it represented an area close by where there was a great need for support among small businesses.

The Entrepreneurship Center at Clarkson has offered business-oriented classes and other educational resources for more than 430 local businesspeople since 2004. The facility boasts an 85-percent success rate among businesses it’s worked with; a figure that’s twice the national average.

“We’ve extended that to Saranac Lake to try to replicate that success,” Draper said.

Opening the Adirondack Business Center

means those same classes can now be offered at the Saranac Lake location. The first series, “My Small Business 101,” began there Oct. 19.

Other classes touch on specific topics such as financial management, marketing, and resource management.

“Then we’ll offer one-on-one support to businesses who have been through the training,” said Draper.

In addition to the classes, the Adirondack Business Center will offer its facilities for use by business owners, vacationers and community groups looking to learn, work, and build stronger businesses. Two private offices, a professional conference room, a 24seat classroom and three computer work stations are all available for rent by the hour.

Draper said telecommuters will be able to extend their visits to the region by having the facility available to access the Internet and e-mail for work purposes on a broadband connection.

Full-time director Mary Gach will be on hand at the newly-opened building as well as two part-time administrative coordinators.

Keith Wells, president of the Saranac Lake Chamber of Commerce, said the Adirondack Business Center fulfills a goal set by the chamber to create a microenterprise program that supports entrepreneurs in downtown Saranac Lake.

Agricultural presentation highlights cover crops WILLSBORO — Thomas Bjorkman, professor of vegetable crops at Cornell University will lead a field meeting and discussion regarding the benefits of fall-planted cover crops to soil used to grow vegetable crops Monday, Nov. 8, 1-3 p.m. at the E.V. Baker Research Farm.

Topics covered will include soil health, benefits and drawbacks of the different types of mustard cover crops, and the timing and management of mustard cover crop plantings and rotations.

Each farm attending will receive a ‘tool kit’ consisting of a copy of the new manual “Crop Rotation on Organic Farms: a Planning Manual,” a set of fact sheets on specific mustard crops, and samples of two mustard varieties to try on their home farm.

The program is targeted to vegetable growers, but is open to anyone with an interest in using cover crops to improve soil health. The cost of $15 per farm goes towards the resource kit and refreshments.

close-knit family patterns, there are also built-in loopholes to offer an individual an acceptable opportunity to escape, or a way to dissociate from society. Listed among these loopholes are such activities as marathon running, trance dancing, vision quests and hunting.

In fact, it was while spending time alone in hunting camp I began writing this article. Although my camp is not located beyond the clatter of civilization, the roar of a nearby stream and the wind whistling in the pines make it seem as if it is.

There is a major difference between being alone and being lonely. Loneliness occurs when you are all alone and you come to realize you don’t really know your only companion

Going it alone As a practice, the opportunity for enjoying complete and utter solitude is rapidly in danger of becoming a lost art. Possibly, it comes as a result of the difficulties involved in obtaining its primary ingredient, the opportunity to be alone. It is certainly understandable, as wild areas are getting more uncommon amidst an ever encroaching world.

A recent report from the National Park Service reveals the sounds of civilization can now be heard in more than 30 percent of our nation’s wilderness areas. Despite our best efforts to escape, we can no longer hide from the jets overhead, nor the entrails they leave behind on the blank sky.

Even after darkness engulfs the planet, the mysterious voids of the evening sky are not longer immune, as satellites or space stations intrude

to leave a paw print on the blank, black blanket that once was the “Great Beyond.”

Climbers atop Mt. Everest regularly use hand-held satellite phones to proclaim they’ve made it; as do astronauts. It has become impossible to escape the din of civilization. As a society, we are heading toward a time when, according to the New York Times, “portable phones, pagers, and data transmission devices of every sort will keep us terminally in touch.”

However, in a more important aspect, society has become almost terminally out of touch.

Our innate need for genuine and constructive aloneness has been lost and forgotten and, in the process, so has a part of all of us.

Over the years, I’ve learned there are times when I don’t need to be in touch or I just

Rather, it is the location, which is often many miles removed from the usual environs of the camp’s inhabitants. It is a place that is purposely far “removed” from their everyday existance.

I recall the story of the Adirondacks’ most famous hermit, Noah John Rondeau.

Beginning in 1914, he lived for more than 30 years in the wilds of the Cold River Valley, huddled in a small cabin located nearly 25 miles from the nearest gathering of civilization.

He was the self-proclaimed “Mayor of Cold River City” — population of one.

Rondeau was an unusual hermit. He actually enjoyed people, but claimed he enjoyed the woods even more. He earned a nickname as the “Tin Can Hermit” for his habit of hitting up hikers traveling along the Northville-Placid Trail for a few cans of grub, which he stored in the nearby Cold River. He came to town to trade furs for staples and often

stayed over with a handful of local families.

Between 1946 and 1947, Rondeau spent the entire year in the woods. He maintained a very detailed journal, since he spent most of the time alone.

One of his finest journal entries was in respect to solitude. As an avid, practitioner of the art, I’ve always enjoyed his entry for March 13.

“3/13/47: I have been at Cold River City for over a full year, much of the time alone with myself. I find that I am very good company!”

I hope you, too, can take a lone walk in the autumn woods, and enjoy the company.

The scent of solitude provides us with the opportunity to enjoy the companionship of the only individual we will ever share our lives with from the beginning to end — oneself.

With practice, solitude teaches us how to deal with this single companion, how to put up with them and to get the best out of them. However, without regular opportunities to spend time alone, we’ve become out of practice.

For all of time, man has sought and found such opportunities primarily in natural settings. Nature is where the earth whispers, yet in silence; it makes the loudest noise.

Solitude allows for sounds we can hear in our souls. It comes with a voice that visits during quiet periods of personal conversation. It happens outdoors because natural surroundings provide our best opportunities to be still, alone and quiet.

However, there is a great difference between being alone and loneliness. Solitude is quiet time we make for ourselves, while loneliness describes the pain of being alone. In nature, as we all know, we’re never alone.

Thoreau explained, “I find it wholesome to be alone the greater part of the time. I love to be alone. I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude.”

Hornets cut postseason short for AuSable Valley

CHAZY — The second loss of the season could not have come at a worse time for AuSable Valley as the top-seeded Patriots fell 10 in overtime against Plattsburgh in the Section VII Class B girls soccer semifinal Oct. 30.

The Patriots came into the match 14-1-1 overall, having defeated Plattsburgh once in the regular season. The fourth-seeded Hornets (13-3-2) were able to step up their game in the postseason, however, and advance to the final.

“I think both teams played extremely well,” said AuSable Valley head coach Keith Raines. “I think our team just gave up the ball too much in the second half and in overtime.”

AuSable Valley dominated much of the first half, maintaining posession well on the Hornets’ half and getting several chances on corner kicks, but staunch defense from Plattsburgh fullback Justine Rotz and goalkeeper Emily Shultz kept the Patriots off the scoreboard.

The Hornets had the upper hand in the second half as they quickly thwarted AuSable Valley’s advances. Midfielder Charisse Abellard set up several scoring chances for Plattsburgh as both teams played to a stale-

mate through regulation.

“We both had six shots on goal and it was all even,” said Raines. “We just gave the ball away way too many times, and when you give them that many chances, eventually they’re going to score.”

Plattsburgh finally broke through midway through the first overtime when a corner kick bounced around in the box and fell to the foot of Madison Trombley, who chipped it under the crossbar.

“You’ve got to hand it to her,” said Raines. “that was a really good goal.”

The Patriots continued to battle with strong defensive efforts by Cammy Keyser and Alexis Coolidge. Megan Colby played strong in midfield and nearly gave AuSable Valley the equalizer with a direct kick late in the first overtime. Schultz prevented it with a diving save.

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com SCHROON LAKE — ElizabethtownLewis kept their playoff hopes alive Oct. 29, with a 1-0 win against Schroon Lake in the Section VII Class D boys soccer quarterfinal.

Connor Apthorp’s goal with 15 minutes remaining in regulation gave the Lions the edge after having dominated play for much of the match.

“I think it was the guys have played as a team this whole season,” said EliabethtownLewis head coach Smitty Marvin. “They moved together well both on offense and defense. You didn’t notice the individual efforts because there was so much good team play today.”

Strong defensive play from Nate Allott, Jeremy Rushby and company kept the ball under the Lions’ control for much of the game, and midfielders Brody Hooper and Hunter Mowery led an effective passing game.

“They really owned the middle of the field, which allowed us to get more shots,” said Marvin.

The first half was tightly contested between two teams that had split their regular season series.

“Every time we played them, it was a bat-

tle,” said Schroon Lake head coach Lee Silvernail, who said his team was focused on preventing goals from Mowery, a big offensive threat.

The Lions narrowly missed a couple of early scoring chances, but finally capitalized when Apthorp and Hooper got loose in transition. The pair played a two-man passing game to advance the ball until Apthorp fired his shot from the 18, sneaking it past Schroon Lake keeper Justin Wachowski, who had come out to stop it.

“The goal today was to get the ball wide,” said Marvin, noting the strength of Wachowski to shut down attacks from the center of the field.
