Saranac Lake competes in Saratoga invitational SARATOGA — Dylan Dawson amazed everyone, perhaps even himself, Oct. 16, when he blazed to a second place finish in a time of 15:41.46, only 33 one hundredths of a second behind Peru’s Dan Lennon. Evan Klein was the next finisher for the Red Storm in 19:30.45, then came Chris Willette (19:41.66), Max Paul (20:12.10), and Nick Mann (21:08.40). The Saranac Lake Boys came in 21st in the team competition. The remainder of the boys’ team competed in the JV race: Nathan Miller was the first finisher for Saranac Lake in a time of 20:51.25, with Evan Greenberg coming in 23:02.50. Will Lanthier finished in a time of 24:03.50, and Haakon Pedersen finished in a time of 25:30.87.

On the girls’ side, Elena Beideck was the top finisher for The Red Storm in 13th place with a time of 19:39.34. Julie Bowler (21:15.58) and Kendra Leonidas (21:21.68) ran well together to capture the 37th and 40th spots overall. Anna Kelting finished next for the team in a time of 23:29.55. Geanette Orton rounded out the scorers in a time of 24:29.76 to claim 103rd place. Andrea Nye (24:41.80) and Chelsea Schachtler (25:05.14) took 109th and 112th places respectively. The Red Storm Girls finished 10th in the team competition. Kaileigh Woodruff (26:28.18) and Camryn Lieb (28:25.42) competed in the JV race.

he Westport Federated Church and the Quality of Life Committee of the Future for Westport campaign recently announced a grant award toward the continued development and expansion of the handicapped accessible Community Garden on the Westport Church’s grounds. The grant of $850 was given by the Glenn and Carol Pearsall Adirondack Foundation, “Dedicated to improving quality of life for year-round residents of the Adirondack Park.” Congratulations to everyone involved in this excellent project.

In its first full year of operation the garden saw not only an expansion in size and produce, but also an expansion in the number of folks benefitted by it and contributing to it. Parts of the garden are raised beds; an herb crib and pole bean tower are accessible to those who don’t bend so well anymore; and, next spring a large raised bed on the adjacent church lot as well as waste-high walker accessible planting beds and a portable wheelchair-accessible planter cart will be added.

Produce is raised sustainably and organically and

consumed, donated and shared locally.

The Westport Library is having an exciting music program Thursday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. Pianist Russell Ames will be playing with violinist Jeris French, various selections from Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms. I don’t normally do birthdays and such in this space (figuring it would be impossible to include everyone) but I can’t resist a happy birthday to Jim Westover, Jr., our Fire Chief. This is a man who embodies a tradition of public service that, sadly, seems to be becoming more and more a thing of the past. Jim’s daughter Nicole Sudduth organized a surprise party for him and his friends and family at Camp Dudley last Saturday night. I was honored to be invited. Looking around the room, it struck me over and over here were the faces of people who have spent literally years of their lives serving their community. he Beautification Committee thanks all who made their recent luncheon a big success, especially the cooks, bakers, diners and clean-up crew. Money raised this fall will help pay for next year’s flowers.

Pickup trucks parked along the edges of fields and in farm lanes indicate another hunting season has started. Right now we’re in muzzleloading season, where the only legal gun to use, either rifle or pistol, fires a single shot loaded through the muzzle. Deer are the principal interest, although black bears can also be taken. The regular rifle season opens this Saturday, Oct. 23, and runs to Sunday, Dec. 5, followed by another week of muzzleloader hunting. Muzzleloaders don’t shoot nearly as far as a regular rifle, and you basically get one chance. Rifles, on the other hand, can be semi-automatic, which means you fire a bullet every time you pull the trigger. Amy and I wear orange vests and hats when we’re out walk-

ing, and Ginny has an orange cape she’s quite proud of. The season is also open for rabbits, squirrels, pheasant and ruffed grouse. You’ll have to wait till May to hunt turkeys.

Last Friday’s wind and rain storm demonstrated the fearsome power of a giant nor’easter. I love a good storm, and having hit during daylight was a real bonus. I was in downtown Essex when a car came off the ferry with its hood pushed in.

The driver said he was parked at the front of the boat when a wave broke over the bow and smashed down on his car. The ferry stopped running after that incident. Out in the lake, huge waves were breaking which the wind whipped into a kind of fog. Waves hitting rocky points shot up huge plumes of spray that hung in the air before crashing down. At Whallons Bay ocean-like rollers were breaking, and a lone sailboat was tossed mercilessly. I’d never seen this sort of violence on the lake, and neither had a lot of other locals. All in all, it was a delightful afternoon.

recent weather storm of heavy rain and strong winds has left lots of small limbs and lots of fallen leaves all over our roadways, drivers need to be careful. The heavy rain brought the Boquet River level much higher, this assisted with the activity of the salmon coming up the fish ladder, and many were seen and counted.

Regardless of the terrible weather some of us traveled down to Schroon Lake last Friday evening to attend the annual Republican dinner. Several of the Republican candidates running for office were in attendance, a good chance to meet them in person. At this annual event they award two very prestigious awards to Essex County citizens who meet the criteria of the persons the awards are named for. The Harry MacDougal award, named after an outstanding and very involved person in Essex County, this award went to Ron Jackson of Essex. The other award is named after Mary Prime from the Lake Placid area who did outstanding and tireless work in and around the county; this was awarded to me for all of my involvements. Both of us were honored, but we both truly enjoy what we get involved in our communities not sure we deserve such

a high honor.

Several family and friends gathered at the Keeseville VFW to help Bill Rowland celebrate his 80th birthday. He was truly surprised and had a most enjoyable time. It is that time of year when more and more of our summer residents are leaving for their warmer winter homes. We truly await their return.

The town clock that has been erected at the town hall area in memory of John Sheehan, will be dedicated Saturday, Oct. 23 with the celebration starting at 11:45 a.m., the clock will then be started at noon. The interested public is most welcome to attend. Reminder of the Congregational Church is having a chicken and biscuit take out supper Thursday, Oct. 28.

LAKE PLACID — This year Pendragon Theatre will present performances of “A Christmas Carol” as its holiday production.

For the past several years a variety of different plays have been performed but the theatre felt it was time to return to the much-loved holiday classic to conclude their 30th year celebration.

or decades, we have asked teenagers and preteens to “Just Say No” to tobacco, alcohol and drugs. During the same period, tobacco, alcohol and prescription drug advertisers have spent billions annually to invite young people to “Just Say Yes.” Movies featuring strong language, sex scenes or illegal drug use may receive an R rating and only be viewed by people at least 17 years of age unless accompanied by an adult. Tobacco, alcohol and prescription drug advertisers that utilize popular actors in blockbuster movies to promote their deadly products are not under the same restrictions.

This month, the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended that all tobacco advertising should be ended and limits placed on alcohol and prescription drug advertising. Short of these developments, the academy recommended movies that depict alcohol, tobacco or prescription drug use should receive PG-13 or R ratings for content that can and does promote the use of substances that endanger youth.

The effects of advertising are incontrovertible, advertising works; otherwise, companies would not dedicate billions of dollars annually to this purpose. In 1972, the then C.E.O. of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco sent an inter-office memo that said, “Product placement in movies are better than tobacco commercials because the audience is unaware of any sponsor involvement.”

Tobacco advertisers spend more than $15 billion annually.

The alcohol industry has little regulation and spends about $6 billion annually to promote their products. Unlike tobacco products that operate under some restrictions, alcohol advertis-

Politicians and the issues What I would like my grandchildren to learn in school — it doesn’t take brainwashing — is that in this free country all people are considered equal; that they are endowed (as its founders put it) with certain inalienable rights which include the “pursuit of happiness.” Not Mr. Paladino’s definition of happiness or anyone’s definition except one’s own.

So, why am I asked to pontificate on whether gay people would rather not be gay, — or if they hope their children won’t grow up to be gay? Frankly, I never thought to inquire. Nor would I think to ask a Christian, a Jew, a black person or a rich guy whether he’d rather be something else. It doesn’t seem like any of my business. And, if it isn’t my business, why should it concern an aspiring Governor of the State of New York or any politician anywhere?

How did this kind of stuff get into an election campaign? There are things that keep me up at night but this issue is not among them.

New York State is nearly broke. Our schools are in trouble. Hospitals and nursing homes are coming apart. Friends and relatives can’t find a job. People have trouble meeting their bills. Young men and women (gays included) are fighting and dying in places I never heard of. And, I should choose a governor because he doesn’t approve of gays?

What else has he got to offer? Besides rage? I worry about organized, political, unfocused rage. It’s not like a swift kick in a snowstorm to a blown tire on your car. It festers. Sooner or later, it finds a scapegoat. The guy you elect to fix a blown economy better have more to offer. A century and a quarter ago, a fury named Mary Ellen Lease charged up and down the country calling on farmers to raise less corn and raise more hell. It was a terrific slogan. It got her a lot of attention. And, it didn’t amount to a hill of beans. What helped farmers were granges, cooperatives, rail and banking regulations and a slew of state governors who knew what business they were elected to attend. I wonder if that history lesson is still taught in school.

By Scot Hurlburt Drugs companies now spend twice as much on advertising then on research and development. A survey of physicians demonstrated that 92 percent of patients requested an advertised drug proving that advertising prescription drugs works.

It seems to me it is time to make any tobacco advertising illegal. The harm caused by tobacco is irrefutable and in an age when resources are becoming scarcer, we cannot ignore the costs of tobacco. Alcohol advertising and prescription drug advertising should be greatly reduced from where it is now if we truly want to protect young people.

When alcohol, tobacco or prescription drug use is depicted in movies, a disclaimer could be issued at the end of the movie warning of the risks associated with the products. These disclaimers could go a long way in changing the minds of young people that believe the use of alcohol, tobacco and prescription drugs are normative behaviors. If we really want to protect young people, reducing advertising opportunities for tobacco, alcohol and prescription drug producers would be a good place to start. Remember all kids count.

Town mishandles money Last year I, and 30 other members of the Elizabethtown-Lewis Chamber of Commerce contributed $3,000 to purchase banners for the power poles in Elizabethtown. At the same time our government received over $5,000 in the Quadricentennial grant money to pay for the brackets to hold the banners, and to cover the cost of of the town highway department putting them up i the spring and taking them down in the fall. The brackets cost $2,000 and that left $3,000 which was the reserve money to pay the installing costs for the next 3-4 years.

Yet this summer our town supervisor, Noel Merrihew twice sent the chamber of commerce a bill for $1,500 to pay for th cost of instlaling the banners! It seems the $3,000 of the grant money disappeared once it was in the hands of our town leader. Last year the NY State Comptroller ’s Office conducted an audit on Elizabethtown’s finances. Their report stated “financial operations were deficient because the supervisor failed to maintain complete and accurate financial records.”

It seems nothing has changed at the town hall. What happened to the $3,000 in grant money the town received? The people of Elizabethtown deserve a leader who can handle OUR money honestly and accurately. Think about that when you write a check to pay your taxes and when you vote.

North Country School unveils green building

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — One local institution is raising the bar when it comes to sustainable building practices.

North Country School and Camp Treetops held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Oct. 15 to unveil its newest house, an 8,000-square foot residence for students and faculty that boasts ‘net zero’ energy consumption.

David Hochschartner, head of the school, said the new building not only provides a great new space, but a model of how to build for energy efficiency.

“There is really no excuse for us not to do this very important work,” Hochschartner said, noting how the facility saves energy and money while providing a fun and comfortable environment for students and teacher-families. “You can lower your carbon footprint, and at the same time, you can do something that’s child-friendly and you can do something that’s practical.”

Photovoltaic panels installed on the roof are expected to produce sufficient electricity not only to meet the building’s electric needs, but at certain times of the year to feed surplus power back into the grid.

This surplus will offset the additional power needed during the winter’s peak lighting and heating season, rendering the building a “net zero” consumer of energy — one that produces as much energy as it consumes.

Occupancy-sensored lights turn themselves off when no one is in a room. All windows are triple pane to keep in warmth, and “solatubes,” reflec-

tive mini-skylights that bring additional natural light to interior spaces.

Awastewater heat reclaim system conserves the energy from bathwater going down the drain, and a sophisticated energy recover ventilator keeps heat and moisture in the building while supplying fresh indoor air. A high-mass, masonry wood heater in the great room provides efficient heating, circulated by a clean air exchange system.

“We can’t afford not to think about the future,” said Assemblywoman Teresa R. Sayward, R-Willsboro, praising the new building as one of several recent projects that make the Adirondacks a leader in going green.

Even the materials for the building were selected with eco-friendly intentions. Compressed cellulose insulation fills the thick walls. Meanwhile, to reduce the energy impact of materials production, the school used much of its own resources.

The fireplace and chimney incorporate stones collected by students on school grounds, and all the lumber for the exterior siding, flooring, paneling, and other interior trim comes from maple, birch, and pine trees harvested sustainably from the school’s campus.

The building includes the same unique “Eagle’s Nest” stairway found in other buildings on the campus, and even features a recreational slide going from the second floor to the first.

According to Hochschartner, the school raised $2.5 million, mostly from trustees and individual donors, in order to build the $1.8 million structure and bolster it with a maintenance endowment.

The building was designed by architect Stephen Tilly and Associates of Dobbs Ferry and constructed by Luck Brothers Inc. of Plattsburgh. Tilly and

his staff spent weeks interviewing the school’s administration, staff, and students to plan the design.

“Our work is really an expression of the history and the present and the future of Camp Treetops as we have come to know it,” Tilly said.

According to Hochschartner, the new green building is the first structure the school has built in more than 40 years, and fills a critical need for space. It will house veteran camp counselors and their families during the summer and North Country School students the remainder of the year.

In the next several years, the school hopes to add a 10-kilowatt solar panel array to power some of the camp’s summer cabins and a biomass heating system for another building similar to one recently installed at The Wild Center.

“This is the first and most visible of many green projects our Board of Trustees is planned in the coming years,” said Hochschartner.

APA approves fire towers as historic

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com RAY BROOK — Proponents of the fire towers atop St. Regis and Hurricane mountains rejoiced last week as officials at the Adirondack Park Agency approved a plan that will allow the towers to be restored at their current locations.

The APA’s State Land Committee approved a resolution Oct. 14, that will classify a half-acre plot surrounding each tower as historic land and allow private fundraising groups to finance renovation and maintenance of the towers.

The decision, which passed 9-0 during the afternoon’s Full Agency meeting, brings a tentative end to a long-running dispute over the towers’ future.

In February, the state Department of Environmental Conservation proposed to remove the towers as the State Land Master Plan considers them non-conforming structures under their current classifications. Lands on St. Regis Mountain are classified as canoe area,

while Hurricane Mountain is in the process of being reclassified from primitive to wilderness.

Both towers have been awarded designation on state and national registers of historic places, however, which required the DEC and APA to consider alternatives that would allow the towers to remain in place.

A series of public hearings conducted by the DEC and APA throughout the past several months drew dozens of comments.

Environmental groups in favor of the towers’ removal claimed they disrupted the wilderness character of their surroundings, but the vast majority of people expressed a desire to see the towers stay, arguing they represented an important part of the region’s history and culture.

The New York State Office of Parks and Recreation, too, indicated a preference to reclassify the land around the towers as historic, which would legally allow them to remain.

“For me this has been a difficult decision,” said commissioner Richard Booth, noting his reluctance to circumvent the way fire towers were regarded in the SLMP “but I think the reality is that historic resources are at a different place than they were 30-plus years ago.”

“I think these towers are absolutely a part of the history of the region,” Booth added. “While there is an impact on the surrounding areas, other than aesthetic impact, it’s an extremely limited impact.”

October 23, 2010 DEC Region 5 director Betsy Lowe indicated that, with the state in the midst of a financial crisis, funds for the towers’ restoration would likely have to come from community fundraising efforts.

The resolution enables maintenance of the fire towers but “does not require, obligate, or anticipate state funds for restoration.”

One fundraising group, the Friends of Hurricane Mountain Fire Tower, claim they have already amassed $10,000 to assist in restoration of that tower.

“Obviously, we’re very pleased with the decision,” said David Petrelli, president of Friends of St. Regis Mountain Fire Tower, who estimates it would cost between $5,000 and $15,000 to make the tower safe and accessible for hikers.

But not all were as keen on reclassification as a solution.

“What the agency is doing is abandoning its responsibility towards wilderness,” said Dan Plumley of Adirondack Wild: Friends of the Forest Preserve. “The further they stray away from their obligation to protect these areas, the closer they steer to their own oblivion.”

“You can’t be next door to a five-story metal structure and call it wilderness,” he added.

Plumley said the better solution would have been to relocate the tower in a conforming area where it would be more accessible as an educational and cultural icon. He noted how the town of Keene passed a resolution offering a different location for the Hurricane

Camp Gabriels From page 1 The minimum-security prison, which the state closed in May 2009 amidst budget cutbacks, has sat vacant and unused since then, much to the dismay of local officials.

“We’re hopeful that it will be put to some use that will be beneficial to the town,” said Brighton town supervisor John Quenell.

The town formed a citizens committee in January to consider possible new uses and identify perspective buyers for the facility, but Quenell said nothing too promising has come up thus far.

“I think, at this point, we just need to wait and hope for the best,” he added. “I think the state is determined to sell the property.”

Quenell said the town has considered acquiring the facility, which it is allowed to do by law if it can develop and execute a plan for its development as a municipal facility.

“There’s a very small likelihood the town would even be interested in it,” said Quenell, “so I think the chances are good that it will end up in private hands.”

Still, Quenell said, the site represents a big risk to potential buyers due to its sheer size and some very precarious unknowns.

The 92-acre site features 48 separate buildings including storage buildings, three circa-1927 dormitories, a gymnasium, and a 100-year-old chapel.

“It’s just an awfully big bite for anyone who might be interested in it,” Quenell

OGS has set a minimum bid of $950,000 for the auction, and is requiring a 10-percent deposit to accompany all sealed bids.

“My personal feeling is that is very high,” said Quenell. “I’d be very surprised if there are any bids at those prices.”

One big issue Quenell noted was how future land use reclassification of the site by the Adirondack Park Agency remains very much a mystery, which represents uncertainty for many potential buyers.

Land on one side of the facility is public land classified as wild forest. Private land on the opposite side is low or moderate intensity use.

Beyond its life as a prison, Quenell said, Camp Gabriels would be best suited for some type of institutional use, such as a college field station or youth camp.

“Perhaps some light manufacturing of some kind,” he said, “but there are just so many buildings that it’s probably not the kind of place a small business would likely be interested in.”

Smart Cents program continues Nov. 11

UPPER JAY — Wells Memorial Library is offering “Smart Cents, ” a free financial literacy speaker series. Although the first event was held Oct. 14, they will continue to be held throughout next year.

On Thursday, Nov. 11, Kelly Conway of NBT Bank will speak about “Government Savings Bonds.” On Thursday, Dec. 9, Lake Placid accountant Barb Dwyer will lecture on “Maximizing Funds for Education.”

Other speakers for 2011 will include Tish Beisemeyer of Burnham Financial on the new healthcare regulations demystified; Ward Lumber president Jay Ward on rural empowerment zones and enterprise communities; and Patty Bashaw of the Essex County Office on the Aging on dollars and cents for seniors. School garden yields healthy harvest

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com KEENE VALLEY — In its ongoing effort to grow healthy minds and bodies, one local school is growing its own food.

Keene Central School has been growing its own organic vegetables, fruits, and spices in a school garden for use in school meals, due largely in part to the efforts of superintendent Cynthia Johnston and cafeteria manager Julie Holbrook.

“Part of the idea has been to save money,” said Holbrook, “but the food just tastes better, it’s more nutritious, and the kids really get a lot out of it.”

For the past three years, the garden has produced tomatoes, squash, salad greens, garlic, onions, kale, pears, beans, asparagus and many other healthy foods to use in place of produce the school would otherwise have shipped to them.

“When we started, it was more like cost shifting than cost saving,” said Johnston, noting how cooking fresh produce from the garden is more laborintensive, “but as we find ways to make it more efficient, things start to shift toward some real savings.”

shares in a local CSA for the first time this year to get more local produce while saving the school more money.

“All of our vegetables that we don’t get out of our own garden we get from them,” said Holbrook.

The school’s garden has expanded in the past year to include a geodesic greenhouse, which was purchased with generous donations from the High Peaks Education Foundation and the Keene Valley Congregational Church.

Students and community volunteers help Holbrook tend the garden, which sits adjacent to the school’s soccer fields.

“A lot of times when we have the kids go out and pick peas or something, a lot of it won’t make it back in, because the kids will eat them right up,”Holbrook said.

In addition, the garden has become an integral part of the curriculum at multiple grade levels as students study the science of composting and photosynthesis, study the new greenhouse as a model for global warming, and discuss good nutrition.

“We continually are talking to them about how food makes you feel,” said Holbrook, “and we try to explain to them that they need good food to stay sharp in school.”

The food harvested from the garden is used to create meals in the school cafeteria whether it’s cooked fresh or processed and stored for the winter.

Pureed tomatoes, garlic, carrots, and kale may be combined for a tasty and nutritious tomato soup.

“We don’t buy any processed food; we even make all our bread from scratch,” said Holbrook. “It’s just 42 cents a loaf, and the kids love it.”

While students have generally welcomed the new food with open arms and open mouths, some parents were hesitant to accept changes to their kids’ school lunches.

“People thought it was more expensive, or they thought it was our philosophy of what’s good and we’re trying to shove it down their throats,” recalled Johnston, but added that many critics have since come to understand the benefits of the change.

While other schools may have interest in using local produce, Holbrook said, they may not have the tools they need, but more and more trainings are being offered to school cafeteria workers on how to cook from scratch.

“That’s the biggest thing we want people to get out of this,” said Holbrook, “that it’s do-able and it’s not hard.”

“The agency failed to consider what we thought would have been a win-win situation,” Plumley said.

According to Plumley, the postage-stamp historic classifications in the middle of vast wilderness areas set a dangerous precedent that could open up both public and private lands in the park to other non-conforming structures, such as cell towers and wind turbines.

“That’s ridiculous,” said Petrelli. “The reason this can all happen is because these are historic structures.”

Work could begin on the St. Regis tower as early as next summer, Petrelli said, but noted there are still several steps that must first take place at the state level.

Meanwhile, Plumley said his group will now take their fight to the office of Gov. David A. Paterson, who must approve the APA resolution for it to take effect.

“We will be lobbying as well,” Petrelli said, “but right now, the momentum is with us. Things are going pretty well right now, and I don’t see any reason why the governor would step in at this point.”

Nurse speaks of experience in Haiti Oct. 23 SARANAC LAKE — On Saturday, Oct. 23, at 7:30 p.m. Peggy Ivimey, a registered nurse from Saranac Lake, will present a slide presentation and talk on her experience as a volunteer nurse in Haiti, five months after the earthquake. Graphic images will depict the damage to the city and its inhabitants.

In June, Ivimey traveled to Port Au Prince, Haiti, to assist in helping those affected by the widespread devastation as a result of the earthquake which occurred Jan.12.

matt@denpubs.com CLINTONVILLE — Oct. 15 was Homecoming night in AuSable Valley, and the Patriots did something few teams have been able to accomplish this season; they put points on the board against Saranac Lake.

Unfortunately, that came after the Red Storm dumped seven touchdowns on their hosts to stay unbeaten in the Northern Football Conference and clinch the Class C title with a 50-8 win.

The Patriots managed to hold Saranac Lake to just 81 yards of total offense in the first half as the Red Storm sabotaged themselves with penalties.

“I think that was the most disappointing part of tonight,” said Saranac Lake head coach Eric Bennett. “We had some holding and some offsides. We weren’t sharp, and that’s not the football we expect to play.”

Defensively, Saranac Lake remained stalwart with several tackles in the backfield by Chris Dorman and Sean Ryan.

AuSable Valley threatened to score a couple times in the first half, but those drives ended with costly interceptions. Running back Jordan Bouyea broke loose for some big runs, and finished with 95 yards to lead the Patriots.

Meanwhile, the Red Storm had just one first-half score, a 14-yard touchdown pass by quarterback Mike Phelan, but some adjustments at halftime led to a big third quarter.

“Frankly, I just told them to get their heads together,” Bennett said.

“I could tell on the bus ride over that we weren’t in the right mindset.

I think we were a little full of ourselves; that we had lost our focus, and it was up to them to find it again.”

According to Bennett, feedback from players in the locker room about what plays were working helped create a different picture in the second half.

The Red Storm got started early with a 61-yard run by Forrest Morgan, then pinned the Patriots in the end zone for a safety. On the ensuing possession, Peter Madden ran 45 yards to paydirt, and Austin McDonough followed that up by returning an interception for a touch-

down. In a little more than four minutes, they had increased their 7-0 lead to 31.

The Patriots’ offensive woes continued as a fumble on their next drive was picked up by Morgan, who brought it in from 41 yards for a touchdown. After AuSable Valley gave up another turnover in the red zone, Morgan added a third touchdown, reversing field for an 86-yard run to seal the third-quarter onslaught.

“The two of them have a really good sense of where to run the ball,” Bennett said of McDonough and Morgan. “They see the field well when they get in open space.”

Madden added 65 on three carries. Collectively, The Red Storm averaged roughly 15 yards per carry.

“And Ben Monty; he came in and engineered a drive all the way down the field for us in the fourth quarter,” Bennett added, “and capped it off with a nice run to the end zone.”

AuSable Valley had a 13-yard run to the end zone called back for a penalty in the fourth, but became just the second team to score against the Red Storm when John Sikandar broke free on a kick return, outrunning defenders 90 yards to paydirt to avoid the shutout.

Saranac Lake improved to 7-0 with the win and have outscored opponents 316-16 along the way, but they face a tough challenge this week as they head to Moriah to face the reigning Class D champs, who also hold a 7-0 record this season.

“We’re going to have to play sharp football if we expect to get a win,” said Bennett.

Warriors crush Keene

Alex Hamel’s three-goal, two-assist effort led the Warriors’ barrage as they kept continual pressure on Keene’s defense throughout the game.

“All of them did their own part,” said Lee of his bench players.

Sherman and Hamel combined for Willsboro’s three second half goals. Sherman finished with two goals and three assists. Goalkeeper Cody Sayward had four saves for the shutout.

Keene goalkeeper Colton Venner recorded 10 saves. The Beavers also benefitted from strong play by Sam Earl, who spent most of the game at sweeper.

The win improves Willsboro’s record to 10-4 overall for the season, and 6-3 in league play.

As his team prepares for sectionals, Lee said their seeding will depend largely on the degree to which their strength of schedule is considered, having faced several strong opponents in MVAC Division I. “I just want to keep the momentum going forward and not lose our focus,” said Lee. “The last two weeks, we’ve been showing much better team chemistry, and I look forward to seeing more team play as we go on.”

Seasonal transitions and traditions

I

n the span of less than two days, Adirondack sportsmen and women enjoyed the opportunity to complete two major seasonal transitions, as the trout season concluded and muzzleloading season opened.

The transition was naturally punctuated when a major snowstorm arrived Oct. 15, to deposit a fresh carpet of heavy, wet snow across the Adirondacks.

Whitetail hunters rejoiced with the prospect of a “tracking snow” for opening day, especially after the lack of any appreciable snow cover for the majority of last year ’s season.

It is difficult to effectively detail the rapidity of the seasonal realignment of my sporting pursuits, as I went from flyfishing in the shallows of Lake Placid for lake trout one morning, to stalking whitetails in the swamps the next.

After trading a flyrod for a ramrod Saturday morning, I packed the hunting gear for a walk into hunting camp. Tree limbs drooped under the heavy, fresh snow, which served to illustrate the tracks and trails of whitetails on my journey into camp.

As a burgeoning sun warmed the scene, I crunched along in the morning’s fresh snow. I was reminded of the wealth of activities available in the Adirondacks.

I knew that skiers would surely be laying down the first, fresh tracks of the new ski season along Whiteface Mountain’s Toll Road, which had received accumulations of nearly a foot of fresh snow.

Along the lower Boquet River, I expected anglers would be laying out long casts to the many landlocked salmon that had recently filled the river. DEC reports had indicated this was the best salmon run in years, with more than 50 fish having passed through the fish ladder at Willsboro. The largest fish topped six pounds.

My ruminations were promptly interrupted with the bark of blackpower rifle discharging. Instantly, my focus returned to the hunt and as I turned a corner, one of our camp regulars was standing alone, looking rather dejected.

“I missed,” he remarked, “I can’t believe it, it was only 15 yards away!”

And, so the new season began. In my mind’s eye, that single shot confirmed the transition. No longer was there any room for thoughts of salmon, brook trout or fresh ski tracks.

Now it is a time to concentrate on whitetails, to study their activities, their travel routes. I knew I’d have to focus and remain alert, as the deer should be up and moving following the big storm.

A very abrupt juxtaposition of pursuits occurred instantly in my mind. I shifted from fins to fur and welcomed the new season and it’s fresh snow. The weekend in camp provided a lot of laughs as we shot and reshot deer in our memories, the only venison that made it’s way to the skillet was taken during the bow season.

When we departed camp Sunday evening, plenty of snow still remained in the upper elevations and leaves were dropping from the trees like raindrops. Although

the landscape was undergoing a gradual process of change, the sporting seasons had already been adjusted.

On Monday morning, I put away my rods and reels and reorganized the canoes and boats. I still have to pull the big boat out of the lake, but it can wait until next week. Saturday is the Opening Day, a whole new season begins and I can’t wait!

Women on the hunt According to new figures from the National Sporting Goods Association, more women than men were recruited into the hunting fraternity last year.

As the total number of hunters in the U.S. decreased slightly between 2008 and 2009, the number of female hunters increased by about 5.4 percent. Women involved in muzzleloading grew by 134.6 percent, bow huntresses grew by 30.7 percent and the number of females hunting with firearms was up by about 3.5 percent.

Data also revealed women have outpaced men among the newcomers to target shooting, where female participation grew by 4.1 percent.

The growth in new participation among women, perhaps counterintuitive to traditionalists, is no surprise to Steve Sanetti, president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the trade association for the shooting, hunting and outdoor industry.

He explained, “Over the past several years, our industry has worked hard to help build this segment of our market. We’ve developed shooting and hunting products especially for women, reached out with welcoming and instructional workshops for women, and encouraged existing hunters and shooters to introduce their spouses, daughters and other newcomers to shooting sports and outdoor lifestyles. I believe these efforts are paying off, which is a bright spot for our industry as well as for conservation.”

Although hunting camps have nearly always been the exclusive domains for male members of the hunting fraternity, there has been an interesting increase in the number of “Doe Camp” weekends in recent years.

The popularity of programs such as, Becoming an Outdoors Women, have served to introduce thousands of women to a world of sporting pursuits that were once the sole realm of men. Now that women realize what they’ve been missing, there’s no turning back.

Eventually, they’ll be in camp too. It will likely make for some awkward moments when some poor fellow decides to pee off the porch.

Sheriff candidates debate issues

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — The two candidates in the race for Essex County Sheriff made their cases before a live audience Oct. 18 as Denton Publications held a debate at Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School.

Richard Cutting and Michael “Ike” Tyler fielded questions on topics ranging from road patrols to officer training, but the main point of contention between the two centered around fiscal management.

“The sheriff’s department budget is up 19 percent,” said Tyler, pledging to bring more fiscal conservatism to the position. “To the many taxpayers in Essex County who are struggling to get by, that’s unacceptable.”

Cutting, however, pointed that boarding out-of-county inmates at the jail has produced enough revenue to cover the $1.5 million annual bond payments the county still shoulders for the new public safety building.

“I produce a very fair and austere budget,” said Cutting, pointing out how the sheriff’s budget increased only $54,000 last year despite a $133,500 increase to payroll due to union contracts.

According to Cutting, the department operates with the minimum amount of administrative staff recommended by the state, and there aren’t very many non-mandatory services that can be cut from the department’s budget.

“If I were to cut any personnel out of that budget, we would jeopardize our ability to board [out-of-county] inmates,” Cutting said.

Tyler, however, said a fresh look at the department’s budget could lead to more ways to save, the most important of which, he said, would be a new alcohol and substance abuse program for inmates.

“I think this program, if it’s done correctly, will save taxpayers a lot of money and solve some of the problems we currently have [at the jail],” Tyler said, claiming additional training is needed to allow corrections officers to work safer and more effectively.

Tyler said he provide corrections officers with new equipment and training for cell extraction and arrange training with the state’s Crisis Emergency Response Team instructors.

“If you always do what you always did, you’ll always get what you always got,” said Tyler in his closing statements, pledging to donate $10,000 of his own salary as sheriff back to the county if elected.

Cutting said he hopes to continue the professionalism that the sheriff’s department has exhibited in the past several years.

“Sheriff is the highest law enforcement officer in the county,” he said, noting how he has the five years of supervisory experience the state recommends for county sheriffs to possess. “I feel my experience with rank makes me the best candidate for the job.”
