I

’ve always thought of myself as kind of a squeamish person. I don’t pass out at the sight of blood or a needle, but I don’t exactly shrug and go on my merry way, either. I often look away during gory movies and TV shows, especially nowadays when the grossest and bloodiest sights can be seen on regular old prime-time dramas.

As for needles, getting an injection of any kind always takes a deliberate act of will for me, a moment at which I say to myself that it wouldn’t really be quite the thing to dissolve into a puddle of jelly or, alternatively, to run screaming out of the room.

You’ll begin to see my reason for sharing this information when I tell you this week in EMT class we move on from studying medical issues to learning how to deal with trauma. Looking ahead in the textbook, I see chapter headings like “Bleeding and Soft Tissue Trauma,” “Burns,” “Musculoskeletal Trauma,” “Eye, Face, and Neck Trauma,” and “Spinal Column and Spinal Cord Trauma.” Head, chest, and abdominal traumas

each get their own chapters. The section starts with a “Trauma Overview” covering topics such as “mass and velocity,” “impacts,” “vehicle collisions,” “falls,” “penetrating injuries,” and “blast injuries.”

So how, you might ask, is a squeamish person like myself going to deal with all this?

I’ve known since joining the fire department and the ambulance squad I was going to see some pretty terrible things. I haven’t seen them yet, but it’s only a matter of time. It’s scary. How do I know that I’ll be able to cope?

Well, I don’t, but I do have some good reasons for thinking it. The best reason of all is I’m not alone. I’m part of a team, and I so have a whole lot of help — from the thorough training I’m getting now to the unfailingly supportive presence of my more experienced brothers and sisters. Without that support, I wouldn’t be able to do this. With it, I can — and so, maybe, can you. I hope you’ll think about it.

e are now at the point when temperatures are fluctuating greatly. Frost is starting to be a potential, so now is the time to shore up gardens and flowers. I find as I take my late afternoon walks it’s also getting a lot darker earlier so weekends are prime time to clean up my garage and shed to prepare for the winter when I really don’t want to be out there freezing for longer than I have to be.

As I mentioned last week, I’m in the process of cleaning my mower (which I didn’t use nearly enough!) and I’m now eyeing my snow blower, but that is too depressing a thought yet. Maybe I’ll shift my shovels and snow rake around just to feel better.

I was talking to someone about how I needed to get something, and he quickly responded with how it was at Lowe’s for about $400. My response was why not get it here in Keeseville? Our hardware store should have it as well. Overall, I really don’t see

things costing much more here if at all than in Plattsburgh. Stores come and go all the time there. Things go here, but they certainly don’t come as often, so I think shopping here should be the first suggestion. How can any place stay open if we don’t keep the money in our community?

I heard from the Chesterfield Fish and Game Club the roof fixing work party was a great success. This is an organization that is really coming alive, which is wonderful to see as they have much to offer our community.

Now is the time to head out and see all the incredible fall foliage. Please remember the fallen foliage really needs to be properly disposed of in bags to the dump. Just walking around our streets there are so many spectacular colors already and the AuSable River after last week’s rain is also a really something to see. Let’s get out and enjoy what has been given to us.

he rain came down and the Boquet River went up. No word of any flooding; it is always something we watch very closely. The fall harvest seems to indicate many had a great season. In a conversation with Sandi Craig about their grape harvest, she said it was one of the best years so far. We now have about four or five fairly good size vineyards here in Willsboro. The apple growers have also stated this has been a good harvest year for them. The Pytlak family has an apple orchard on the land behind the drug store; still young, but has a promising future.

Halloween will soon take up the farmer ’s supply of pumpkins.

Glad to report the Smith Health Care Center continues to improve their service. Hopefully you have noticed the newly installed solar unit to help them cut down on their operating cost. I also learned another way they are working to cut their expenses is to join with the Elizabeth Town Hospital to take over the billing process in place of having to contract it out to a private firm. Cost cutting is what

business needs to do these days and glad that this board is doing all they can to cut their cost and still provide good service.

Columbus Day marks the end of the Visitors Center being manned by volunteers as well as the Willsboro Heritage Museum. Both will close for the season that Monday. We are most grateful for all the loyal volunteers who have made it possible to have our centers open for the season.

The Willsboro Catholic Church had a large gathering this past Saturday. The Catholic Daughters Past Regents Chapter of the Ogdensburg Diocese of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas; celebrated a special mass for the deceased members of the 13 courts around the state. Bishop Terry LaValley and Rev. Joseph Elliott officiated at the special mass.

They had several high ranking state officers in attendance and the event was well attended.

On Monday, Oct. 11, there will be a special party at the Grange for one of Essex’s newest authors, Kristin Kimball, who be reading from her book about life on Essex Farm.

There will be a potluck dinner at 6 p.m., followed at 7 p.m. by a musical interlude fea-

turing Jay Fiegl and then the readings.

I stopped at Full and By Farm on Leaning Road the other day, and was given an informal tour by farmer James Graves. This place operates as a CSA and has a small herd of Tamworth hogs, which James uses to clear rough ground. The pigs are enclosed by an electric fence, given water and shelter, and left to do what comes naturally to them.

They deracinate, dig, eat and trample the vegetation, and quickly convert the plot into a plowable piece of cropland. James then moves the fence and starts them on another reclamation project. This process will soon end for the year as the pigs fulfill their final mission, becoming pork.

My dog Ginny is feeling a bit blue now that her friend Champy has returned to his winter home in suburban Ohio. He’s a miniature imp who loved to goad Ginny into chasing him around our hay fields. She’s fast, but Champy, on his short legs, could stop and turn very quickly, causing Ginny to often run right past him. We hope he comes back for a winter visit.

WHALLONSBURG — The Whallonsburg Grange Hall will continue its Lyceum fall lecture series Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m. with a lecture entitled “A People Numerous and Armed: A New Nation Born in Revolution.” This is the fourth of nine lectures dealing with American History from 1560 to 1865 and presented by Andy Buchanan, a faculty member at the University of Vermont.

recent report released by the Substance Abuse and mental Health Services Administration raises a variety of grave considerations about fiftysomething Americans.

The report documented a sharp increase in the proportion of older Americans being treated for addiction problems including, alcohol, marijuana, heroin, cocaine and prescription drugs. The study tracked the proportion of substance and alcohol treatment admissions involving older Americans, aged 50 or older, which nearly doubled between 1992 and 2008.

The findings revealed that heroin abuse more than doubled, cocaine use quadrupled, prescription drug use tripled and marijuana use doubled. Admissions primarily related to alcohol abuse decreased by 24 percent during the same time period. Admissions for multiple substance disorders have nearly tripled between 1992 and 2008.

While the study showed that 75 percent of all older Americans treatment admissions had initiated use of their primary substance by age 25, an increasing proportion of admissions involved substances that had only been initiated within five years prior to admission. The implications of these developments may add to the expected health care crisis once Baby Boomers retire in significant numbers over the next 10-20 years.

A convergence of other factors may have added to the angst that some boomers aren’t handling in adaptive ways. Wages for middleclass Americans have been stagnant for sometime which has limited the ability to save for retirement.

In Chinese and most other Asian cultures, the elderly occupy a position of great respect. The notion of Nursing Homes is still an alien idea. In stark contrast, in ancient times, it is said that elderly Eskimos, would voluntarily disappear on an ice floe once they could no longer make a contribution to the village. Where will elderly Americans find themselves in twenty years; occupying a position of respect and support, or one that is much less palatable? Remember, all kids count.

The latter gentleman was interviewed by a Star reporter as to the probabilities of striking oil, and said in substance: “There is no doubt that there is oil in that region, for we have already found traces of it.

Whether we will be able to find it in paying quantities is a question,. The well has now reached a depth of 2,120 feet. The last 300 feet has been through very hard rock, and when we get through that we may strike oil of gas. Judging from the nature of the rock I am inclined to believe it will be gas, if either. The drilling for the past few months has been extremely difficult, owing to the fact that the last casing sunk, which is four inches in diameter, leaks badly, and it takes over two-thirds of our time to keep the water bailed out and the machinery and tools in order.

Some days we have been unable to drill more than ten or twelve inches, and very rarely over a foot and a half on this account. If a new casing were put in I think it would take but a very short time to sink the well as far as is necessary to determine whether oil or gas is there.”

Mr. Proper stated that the work had been stopped, but that drilling would undoubtedly be resumed in the spring. “I am told,” he added, “that nearly $5,000 has been expended on the well, and I should say it would

Wilmington interested in the success of the PWA dam and pond project now in course of completion in that community are delighted with the report of PWA engineers who on September 29 inspected the work under the project and pronounced it entirely satisfactory. The inspection was made by Engineer J. J. Lyon, chief regional engineer, region No !, embracing New England and New York, and Engineer Clarence W. Post, deputy administrator and chief engineer, New York state. Both engineers expressed themselves as highly pleased, not only with the design of the structure, its utility and benefit to the community, but with the execution of it, perfection of the work and the progress being made...

ELIZABETHTOWN - The sons of two New York State Supreme Court Justices were among the 15 young men admitted to the bar before the Appellate Division in Albany last Friday. They are Byron G. Brewster, son of Justice O. Byron Brewster of Elizabethtown, and William S. Crapser, son of Justice John C. Crapser of Massena. The new attorneys were greeted by Appellate Justice F. Walter Bliss, who told them he “did not envy them their unusual task: in the face of present criticism of the profession and the law. He said the present is “one of the most inauspicious times in the history of the profession.”

To the editor: “Fuming but Still Smoking,” an Adirondack Daily Enterprise article (9/24/2010), reported the impact of NY’s sales tax increase on cigarette sales in area convenience stores.

According to store owners, consumers are still buying cigarettes, but less expensive brands. The article was sympathetic to the economic plight of convenience stores leading the reader to be relieved that people still smoke. The costs of continued smoking were not addressed.

On average, every household in New York State pays $894 in taxes each year for health care for people with smoking-caused illnesses.

And sadly, most of us have had a loved one live in pain or die before their time because of smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke.

25 percent of adults in Franklin County smoke. These smokers know better than anyone what they sacrifice to pay for these addictive products.

The good news about higher cigarette costs is that fewer kids start smoking and many smokers smoke less. Plus, people try to stop smoking.

As stated in the ADE article, New York State is trying to increase the cost of retail licenses to sell tobacco products. If that occurs, each store will have to decide if selling tobacco is worth the extra cost. Keep in mind, most people want to stop smoking and in time the market for cigarettes will shrink. Now is the time for business owners to begin exploring what they can sell instead to stabilize and expand their bottom lines.

Horace Nye a worthy investment To the editor: On Sept. 20, Horace Nye Task Force Committee Chairman Roby Politi called the committee to order by saying “I will call this task force committee to order, at which time we probably have to fish or cut bait.”

While HNTFC is fishing, I would like to talk about our role in responsibility to the residents in the Horace Nye Home.

The crises at HNH didn't just happen overnight. A 2004 Rotenburg report identified and recommended varied management strategies - what happened to those? Shame on everyone who sat on their hands and did nothing. So how about a management overview now? Why target our Essex County residents who live at HNH? They deserve better. The very people who live, work, payed taxes and now reside at HNH are now forced to read in the paper that they may lose their home - that's not right. What about their concerns, suggestions and fears? What are their options?

My concern with privatization is that a business will do what it takes to make money on a resident. How? By offering less handson care, cheaper products, less pay for staff. The only people who will be able to afford to pay are those with Medicaid and Medicare. What about an Essex County resident without a pay source or no Medicare or Medicaid or no way to pay? Will they be sent to another county? That is a huge hardship on both the individual and the family.

Why not just tell our resident in need to rob a bank in Essex County, get caught and live at the Essex County Jail — then the county could make money off the person and they could still reside in the county near family.

Option one of the Horace Nye Task Force Committee is to rebuild, etc. but once again it boils down to cost. Break down the numbers of the 30 percent tax hike. What percentage of that is attributed to Horace Nye, maybe 2 or 3 percent? Death and taxes are a certainty.

Cut fuel use instead of rest areas

To the editor: I see the State of New York is closing more rest areas on the northway. It would seem to me that if Ike Tyler were elected Sheriff, he might take some of the lay-abouts doing time at Essex County Jail and develop work details to take over where the state is abdicating its role.

While the state is cutting back on public amenities, and I guess they forget Canadians and truckers used these stops, I don’t see any reduction in fuel use by the lead-foot State Police. In fact, when I filed a FOIL, it showed progressively higher incrimental use year-to-year, and clearly the ankle muscles in most troopers get lots of work-outs as they floor it, often seen traveling at very high rates of speed for no real law enforcement purpose.

Nor do I see any move by high officials to cut back on the use of state aircraft, etc. It’s no wonder Mark Barie is becoming the leader of the lost in the North Country.

JAY — A pair of local residents have returned to their home here after a unique sight-seeing vacation.

Mike and Stephanie Battisti, both 52, are now safely at home in Jay after completing a coast-to-coast journey on a bicycle built for two.

“I don’t think we were suffering from a mid-life crisis when we left,” said Mike, “but it definitely made us take a step back and reassess our lives, traveling through such a big and diverse country where we have the freedom to follow our dreams.”

The Battistis set out in late May, starting their journey from the Atlantic coast of Yorktown, Va. Sleeping primarily in a tent along the way, they logged 4,271 miles on their tandem bicycle to reach the Pacific coast near Seattle, Wash. The journey lasted 94 days.

The trip sprung out of a desire to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary in a unique way.

“In a way, it was like renewing our wedding vows,” Mike said, noting how they needed to work together to overcome challenges and accomplish their cross-country goal, “although we can think of much easier ways to do it.”

Their travel route followed the

TransAmerica bicycle trail, established in 1976 as part of a celebration of the American Bicentennial. The route crosses the Appalachian, Ozark, and Rocky Mountain ranges and passes through Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks.

“We saw the Shenandoah Valley, the Great Plains, the Great Divide Basin, the Big Hole Valley,” Mike said. “We went through Grand Teton and Yellowstone and saw Old Faithful erupt.”

The couple averaged about 50 miles per day on the days they rode. They blogged about their travels along the way, sharing photographs of the major landmarks and day-to-day updates of their status. Tales of their travels can still be viewed at tandembattistis.blogspot.com.

“We had four flat tires,” said Mike; “not bad considering our bike fully loaded, with us on it, weighed 450 pounds. We were able to dodge most thunderstorms, or sit them out in the shelter of a building or front porch.

Headwinds were only occasionally a problem.”

In the meantime, they took by-the-mile pledges from friends to support North Country Public Radio and Mountain Lake PBS. Altogether, they raised more than $3,000 to be split between the two organizations.

Smith House working toward efficiency

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com WILLSBORO — Willsboro’s community health care facility is undertaking some changes to put its resources, natural and otherwise, to better use.

The Smith House health care center activated its brand new array of solar panels last week, marking a milestone on the organization’s move to energy efficiency.

The photovoltaic panels were installed on the front lawn of the facility this summer after Smith House received a $400,000 grant funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. “We strategically put them there so everybody can see them,” said Robin Pierce, executive director of Smith House. “I really think it’s important for the community to see what we’re doing for energy conservation.”

Pierce said the panels will help reduce energy costs for Smith House, and electricity they generate during the building’s off-hours can be sold back to the grid to further reduce monthly bills.

In addition to the solar panels, the grant helped fund an upgrade of the building’s heating and cooling system. Local contractors were awarded bids to install a propane boiler to power a new air-exchange heating system.

Pierce said the propane system produces clean energy and is more efficient than the electric heating system previously in place. That switch alone is estimated to cut the building’s electricity use in half.

“Plus, we’re going to be able to meet the Department of Health air exchange standards for years to come,” said Pierce. “It will extend the life of the building as a health care facility, and I don’t know how to put a value on that.”

Noting a reduced number of patients as summer wanes, Pierce said the Smith House’s Willsboro location will reduce its schedule to a fourday week in the coming weeks in a further effort to improve efficiency. The building will be closed Friday through Sunday.

“We still have staff on call 24-7,” Pierce said.

Changes are also occurring behind the scenes as Smith House has entered into a contractual agreement with Elizabethtown Community Hospital for assistance with administrative services.

The agreement will go into effect Oct. 15.

ESSEX — Mary Kristina (Banz) Gullo, at age “Plenty-eight,” died peacefully Sept. 24, 2010, at CVPH in Plattsburgh, N.Y., after a lengthy illness.

Mary was born in Lake Forest, Ill., the daughter of Richard D. and Cora (Westerberg) Banz. She grew up in Lake Forest and also lived in Sevilla, Spain, as a child. As part of her program at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis., she returned to Spain and studied for a year at the University of Madrid.

A 1967 graduate of Lawrence, she moved to Washington, D.C., and joined the U.S. State Department, where she met Robert Gullo, whom she married in 1969. Together, the couple lived in Caracas, Venezuela; San Jose, Costa Rica, the birthplace of their six children; and in Annandale, Williamsburg and Ashburn, Va. In 1979, Mary and her husband purchased a summer home in Essex, N.Y., where, with their children, Mary operated the Essex House Bed and Breakfast. She became a permanent resident of Essex in 1988 where she was an enthusiastic participant of the many causes of her adopted town. She was a fire commissioner of Essex, an active member of the Adirondack Art Association and was greatly involved with the Essex Theatre Company in many capacities.

From her earliest childhood, Mary's passion was art. She became an accomplished and highly respected artist in several media, primarily painting and drawing but also including lithography, sculpture and jewelry.

Mary was known for her unbridled wit and wisdom and her infectious laugh. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew her or were touched by her generosity.

Mary is survived by her loving partner, Mark Rutkowski of Essex; her children, Emily Gullo (Mike Casella) of Longwood, Fla.; Dan (Gullo of Manchester, N.H.; Charlie (Ho Suet Yen) Gullo of Singapore; Laura (Joe) Goldy of Hartford, Wis.; Gerry Gullo of Meridian, Conn.; Tom Gullo of Williamsburg, Va.; and her former husband, Bob Gullo of Newcastle, Maine. All were with Mary in her final days. Mary is also survived by her brother, Richard (Judy) Banz of Boca Grande, Fla.; and her grandchildren, Rebecca and Robert of Connecticut and Samantha, Austin, Devin and Brianna of Wisconsin.

All are invited to join in the celebration of Mary's life to be held at the Essex Community United Methodist Church, Essex, N.Y., at 11 a.m. Oct. 9.

An avid golfer and golf superintendent, he will be missed by many.

WILLSBORO — Judith (Judy) A. Lacey Behan, 72, of Senior Lane, Willsboro passed away Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at Adirondack Medical Center.

Judy was born in Willsboro, N.Y. on March 19, 1938, the oldest daughter of James and Jennie (Denton) Lacey.

Judy retired from the Horace Nye Home as a kitchen aide after 19 years of service.

Judy enjoyed spending time with her friends at Lakewood Apartments, especially while playing chicken foot and bingo. She looked forward to her morning coffee and afternoon stories with her friend Grace and getting together with her long time friend Gloria. She also enjoyed visiting with her brother, sister-in-law and nieces and phone calls with her children.

Survivors include her son Rick Behan and his wife Patty of Albany and her daughter Kim Evans of Rochester; a brother and his wife, Bruce and Martha Lacey of Willsboro; nieces and husbands Laura and Perry Marsha of Willsboro and Debbie and Joe Martin of Willsboro; nephews Tim and Candy Lacey of Willsboro and Albert Jones; grandchildren Adam, Aaron, Brendon, Caitlin, Nathaniel and Lucas Behan, Maurice (M.J.), Wesley and Connor Evans; great grandchildren Adam Jr., Ashley, Aaron Jr., Chloe, Tyler and Flynn ; great nieces Stephanie Hutchins, Christina Chiravolo, Nicole Gardner, Shelbie Lynn Gardner and Taressa Lacey; great nephew Owen Martin.

Citizens wary of DEC layoffs, impact in dispute

But multiple sources — including DEC employees — contest the budget office’s claim that the state’s environmental regulatory body will shed this few. These sources predicted that DEC will actually hemorrhage another 209 employees due to Paterson’s mandated reductions.

Reacting to the news, State Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward (R-Willsboro) said DEC is already understaffed and further cuts could cripple the regulatory agency. ”We’re seeing right now that roads will be closed that typically wouldn’t be closed to our

hunters. We have so many issues with DEC as it is,” she said. “We just can’t suffer one more cut.”

Jessica Bassett, spokeswoman for the Office of the Budget, offered a conservative estimate of potential layoffs.

“That can be layoffs, it can be attrition, it can be regular retirements that happen between now and the end of the year,” she said. “But layoffs are one way to get that 87 reduction.”

The position eliminations will only boost the loss of 272 DEC employees recently shed as a result of the recent state retirement incentive program. Tuesday was the last day of work for those who accepted the buyout.

The additional forced layoffs and position eliminations have been initiated because the response to the retirement incentive package fell short of state officials’ expectations.

Bassett said state agency commissioners were just notified of the further reductions this

week. She added the local impacts of the cuts to DEC are still unknown.

“The agencies just got their targets on Monday and Tuesday so agencies and the budget division are working together on how to make those reductions,” she said.

There’s also some confusion about how the workforce reductions will impact the Adirondack Park Agency.

Bassett said the plan will require the elimination of another three positions at the agency.

These cuts would be on top of the cuts already made during last spring’s state budgeting process that forced the closure of the APA-run visitor interpretive centers. She said the APA workforce would be reduced to 56 employees.

Regardless of the exact number of eliminations – especially at DEC—the cuts have local leaders and environmentalists concerned.

Besides her protest over the DEC cuts, Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward said she does-

n’t think the elimination of another three APA jobs is appropriate either.

“I hear from people all the time, the difficulty of getting answers and the turn-around time at the Adirondack Park Agency,” she said. “I would only guess that with fewer employees, it’s only going to get worse.”

Adirondack Council Executive Director Brian Houseal said he was also concerned.

“We have no idea how it’s going to impact the Forest Preserve,” he said.

Assuming the budget office’s figures prove accurate, the total workforce reduction will reduce DEC’s statewide ranks to 2,926 employees.

The Civil Service Employees Association has already filed a suit against Paterson because of the layoffs.

The reduction of another 2000 employees equates to about 1 percent of the state workforce.

LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid Volleyball team got its second victory of the season Oct. 1, defeating the Red Storm in three straight games; 25-6, 26-24, and 25-15.

“It’s a rivalry, but it’s a friendly rivalry,” said Blue Bombers’ head coach Donna Moody. “A lot of the girls have friends in Saranac Lake, and they want to have bragging rights. I don’t think we’ve beaten them in the past two or three years.”

Chrystine Ellis helped Lake Placid cruise to victory in the first game, serving up five straight aces and six points.

“That got us rolling right there,” said Moody, who also noted strong serving from Dani Balestrini and Ali Baumbach. “We were serving pretty well, and that helped us a lot in the first game.”

Saranac Lake appeared as if they might knot things up in the second game as they managed to grab a 20-14 lead behind the serving of Abby Smith, who finished with seven points, including three aces, and five digs.

“The second game was great,” said Saranac Lake head coach Erin LaFave, “They just kind of let it fizzle at the end.”

Baumbach answered, serving up six points to give Lake Placid the win. She finished with 11 to lead the Blue Bombers for the match.

“The kids, I think, were determined to win this match,” said Moody, “They got it together and kept their composure.”

Olivia Dempsey and Joanna Politi combined to serve 11 points for Lake Placid in the third game as they raced out to a 17-9 lead.

Dempsey would finish with eight points for Lake Placid, adding six assists and two kills.

Saranac Lake, meanwhile, fell to 0-8 for the season.

“Our serving was great, our passing was good,” said LaFave, “It’s just that [Lake Placid] was very good at getting the ball up.”

Hoffman withdraws, endorses Doheny PLATTSBURGH — Candidate Doug Hoffman has withdrawn from the race for New York’s 23rd Congressional District and has thrown his support behind primary winner Matt Doheny.

In a statement issued Tuesday morning, Hoffman said it was never his intent to split the Republican vote in November and said the GOP needs to unite in its effort to gain control of Congress.

While it is too late to have his name removed from the ballot on the Conservative Party Line, Hoffman is urging his supporters to vote for Doheny.

“It was never my intention to split the Republican vote in the 23rd District. So, today, I withdraw as a candidate from this race,” Hoffman stated. “Under New York State Election Law my name cannot be removed from the Conservative Party line on the ballot. However, I strongly urge and request that my supporters not vote for me and certainly not vote for the Democrat or Working Families Party candidate.”

“Matt Doheny and I may have differed on some issues during the course of our primary race. Now, we must put those differences aside and do what is best for our nation. So, today, I am asking all my supporters to cast their vote for Matt Doheny on Election Day, November 2nd,” he said.

Hoffman, a Saranac Lake-based accounting firm owner, had pledged to stay in the race on the Conservative Party line after narrowly losing to Doheny, a Watertown investor, in the Sept. 23 Republican primary.

Doheny will now face incumbent Democrat William L. Owens, a Plattsburgh attorney, in the general election Nov. 2.

Doheny also picked up a key endorsement last week from Mark L. Barie, chairman of the Upstate New York TEA Party (UNYTEA). Doheny conceded a lack of votes in Clinton, Essex, and Franklin counties, and suggested UNYTEA’s early endorsement of Hoffman may have led to his lack of support in those counties.

Tuesday morning, Barie called Hoffman’s withdrawal a “class act.”

“Doug has done the right thing for the NY 23rd and he has done the right thing for our nation,” said Barie. “It was a painful decision, I’m sure, but it proves what his supporters have said all along: Doug Hoffman is a class act.”

Moriah 34, AuSable Valley 8 CLINTONVILLE — The Vikings’ running attack proved too much for AuSable Valley in Northern Football Conference action Oct. 1.

Moriah totaled 414 yards on the ground against the Patriots, including 236 yards from backup tailback Tom Ida, who broke loose for two long touchdown runs in the third quarter to put the Vikings out of reach. Nate Gilbo added 86 yards on 15 carries with two touchdowns.

The Patriots did slow Moriah’s passing game, however, and Austin House nabbed an interception in the second quarter. AuSable Valley finished with only 85 yards of total offense, however. A late fourth-quarter drive capped by a John Sikandar run prevented the shutout.

Saranac Lake 49, Beekmantown 0 BEEKMANTOWN — The Red Storm looked unstoppable once again, shutting out Beekmantown in Northern Football Conference play Oct. 2.

Austin McDonough logged four touchdowns for Saranac Lake: two receiving, one rushing, and one on a punt return, and quarterback Mike Phelan threw 7-of-11 for 98 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. The Red Storm amassed a total of 235 yards rushing on 20 carries, led by Forrest Morgan with 57 yards on five carries.

Meanwhile, Saranac Lake’s defense held the Eagles to just 42 yards of total offense, most of it coming through the air. Beekmantown quarterback Zachary Myers threw 5-of-14 for 39 yards.

Saranac Lake has outscored its opponents by a margin of 225-8 so far this season.

Boys Soccer Beekmantown 5, Saranac Lake 1 SARANAC LAKE — The Eagles controlled the ball and gave Saranac Lake more than they could handle in CVAC boys soccer Sept. 29.

Jordhan Verin logged a hat trick for Beekmantown after assisting Chris McIlroy to open the scoring 15 minutes into the first half. Keon Jahanbakhsh added a goal and an assist as the Eagles finished with a 28-6 shot advantage.

Verin and Jahanbakhsh each had goals on penalty kicks early in the second half.

Ricky Schmidt was busy in the Red Storm goal with 11 saves. Nate Capone finally put Saranac Lake on the board mid-way through the second half.

CLINTONVILLE — Some late game heroics allowed the Patriots to prevail in yet another close game against Saranac Sept. 29 in CVAC boys soccer.

Shane Douglas netted the game-winning goal with 5:20 remaining in the second half off an assist from Kyle Sprague.

AuSable Valley’s Alex Connor gave his team the lead 13 minutes into the second half with the assist by Nick Rhino, but the Chiefs’ Kyle Erikson knotted the score 13 minutes later in a back-and-forth match. Saranac finished with a 10-9 advantage in shots.

Sean Pulsifer and Nate Casey both had strong efforts in the midfield for the Patriots. Goalkeeper Jeremy Wood nabbed eight saves for the win.

Plattsburgh 11, Lake Placid 0 LAKE PLACID — The Blue Bombers proved no match for the conference-leading Hornets in CVAC boys soccer Sept. 29.

Ethan Votraw and David Carpenter each had three goals for Plattsburgh as they raced to a 9-0 lead before the half. Votraw started the onslaught less than a minute into the game and had the hat trick by the nine-minute mark.

Willsboro 6, Keene 2 KEENE — The high-powered Willsboro offense proved too much for the Beavers in MVAC boys soccer Oct. 1.

Clay Sherman scored three goals and added an assist while Patrick Wells chipped in two goals and an assist to lead the Warriors, who held a 4-0 lead at the half. Brandon Porter also had a goal and an assist.

The Willsboro lead would climb to 6-0 before two quick goals by Jamie Kaltenback and Dylan Boyle put Keene on the board. Willsboro had outshot the Beavers 21-5 by the end of the match.

Sam Earl recorded 15 saves in net for Keene.

Westport goalkeeper Molly Rascoe had five saves, as did Panthers keeper Lauren Brace.

Chazy 2, Willsboro 0 WILLSBORO — The Warriors held off unbeaten Chazy through an entire half, but couldn’t salvage the tie in MVAC girls soccer Sept. 29.

Courtney Blanchard recorded a staggering 31 saves for Willsboro as they battled in their own side of the field for much of the game. Chazy finished with a 36-1 shot advantage.

The Eagles finally broke through early in the second half, however, when Kristen Doran found the net. Hannah Laurin gave them an insurance goal about 15 minutes later, but Chazy was held to their lowest scoring game of the year.

LAKE PLACID — The Red Storm got their second win of the season Oct. 2 with a nonleague victory against Northwood School.

Max Calderone scored both Saranac Lake goals, both coming on direct kicks. His first goal came late in the first half. He scored again mid-way through the second half to give the Red Storm a 2-0 lead.

Sam Akins put Northwood on the board with less than three minutes left in regulation.

t’s official — crossbows will be allowed during next year ’s regular and muzzleloader season, as well as during a special late season in the Southern Zone.

I know what most of you are thinking .... “so, what?”

I must concur — like I’m going to leave my Browning in the rack in favor of a device that tosses a bolt 2,700 feet per second slower.

Granted it is a baby step toward allowing crossbow enthusiasts the right to practice their craft in the Empire State.

But, for me, the legislation falls woefully short of its original intent because it doesn’t allow those with physical limitations to hunt during the regular archery season with a crossbow.

I have a unique insight on this subject — I am one such person. My left hand remains partially-paralyzed after a negligent hunter sent a shotgun slug tearing through my neck in 1993.

Since that time, I’ve struggled to regain my ability to practice the sport I love. As I was recovering, one of the first questions I had of the physical therapists was “How am I ever going to bowhunt again?”

They had very few answers. We tried all sort of adaptive devices — metal forms that would hold my wrist straight. We tried velcro wraps to hold my hand to the bow.

Nothing worked.

Then, in 1995, a man named Jerry Goff came up with a device that could hold a bow at full draw, and New York passed legislation allowing such devices.

The device, called a Draw Loc, worked fabulously for me. I was bowhunting again — and I’ve since taken a number of deer with my adapted bow.

But, it does have limitations.

Fortunately for me I do have some use of my left hand, allowing me to at least grasp the bow. Others, like amputees, are not as lucky.

It also is awkward to hold a bow at full draw all the time. It gets very tiring, even from a sitting position, and some people simply do not have the arm or shoulder strength to do so or even hoist a bow.

So, why block these individuals from filling their bow tag by using a crossbow?

The use of crossbows is now allowed in some capacity in all but two states — and 18 states have provisions allowing physically-challenged hunters to use them during regular archery seasons.

Many provinces in Canada are the same. In fact, I leave in just a few short week’s to hunt in Manitoba, where I am allowed to use a crossbow with my handicapped archer permit.

Some bowhunter groups — such as New York Bowhunters Inc. — have lobbied hard against the use of crossbows, even among the physically-challenged, arguing that there use would open the flood gates on applications from people perfectly capable of using a traditional bow.

That’s like saying we shouldn’t issue handicapped parking passes to people in wheelchairs because able-bodied people may abuse the right.

Why punish the disabled simply to control permit abuse? It seems to me this could be controlled through strict screening during the permitting process itself.

Bowhunter groups also argue that the use of crossbows would fill the woods with hunters during archery season — a time they have historically enjoyed to themselves.

But, the statistics don’t seem to support the argument. In nearby Pennsylvania, for example, where crossbows have been allowed since 2009 for anyone possessing an archery

Granted bowhunters harvested a few more deer with crossbows — most likely because of their accuracy — but is that such a bad thing? I’d dare say less deer were wounded, and tags are issued to be filled.

And, let’s face it, unless you hunt with a traditional recurve — there is little that remains “primitive” about today’s compounds.

My compound bow, for example, because of its power stroke (the distance the bow string travels from full draw to rest position) is actually much faster than my crossbow.

It’s quieter, and I get better groups at 40 yards with it than I do my crossbow.

I’ll be the first to admit it usually is my weapon of choice during the archery season.

I chose the crossbow for Manitoba, however, because it is easier to shoot given my physical limitations — especially in cold weather when my hand basically becomes a useless appendage at the end of my left arm with little to no mobility.

I’m not sure how anyone could in good conscience tell someone with a similar physical limitation they cannot bowhunt, with or without a crossbow — all in the name of somehow preserving the “purity of the sport.”

“I support the college, but I do not support the timing of this project today,” said North Elba supervisor Roby Politi, one of eight supervisors to vote against the measure.

The resolution represented Essex County’s commitment to the $65 million project, to which Franklin County would have also contributed $16 million with New York State’s University Construction Fund supplying the rest.

However, several supervisors argued Essex County couldn’t afford to take on the cost of the bond when they anticipate a near-40-percent rise in taxes for the coming year.

“We were working on the budget last week, and I can tell you it’s not pretty,” said Moriah supervisor Tom Scozzafava, who chairs the Finance Committee. “We trimmed as much as we could possibly trim during the workshop, but I can tell you right now it’s not going to be enough.”

Board chairman Randy Douglas, supervisor of Jay, advocated for the borrow, claiming expansion of NCCC could improve enrollment there, particularly among county residents, thereby offsetting the cost Essex County bears in enrollment chargebacks to community colleges in other counties.

“I understand my colleagues’ reservations on this,” said Douglas. “The timing couldn’t be worse.”

According to county manager Dan Palmer, Essex County would have a minimum $60,000 payment to make on the bond in the first year and $460,000 each year afterward until it was repaid.
