According to Palmer, the firm will use its complex software and expertise to analyze thousands of invoices from the past year, comparing county expenditures for various goods and services to the prices of similar products offered both regionally and nationwide. Their results will allow county officials to find out if they’ve been spending foolishly and where.

“There’s probably things out there we’re spending more on than we’re supposed to be,” said Palmer.

As Westport supervisor Dan Connell pointed out, one of the main issues county leaders anticipate is getting department managers to welcome the critique of Aeon Nexus’s analysis.

“We seem to have departments that want to make excuses as to why they’re spending more instead of finding ways they can save more,” Palmer said in agreement.

Get photography tips from Carl Heilman at The Wild Center

TUPPER LAKE — The Wild Center will host a Fall Photography Workshop with Carl Heilman Saturday, Oct. 2.

Carl Heilman, II has photographed the Adirondacks for over 35 years; working to meld his passion for wildness into his landscape and panoramic photography. His work has been published in numerous national and regional publications.

Join Heilman for this day-long workshop that includes a morning session from 9:30 a.m. to noon, a public showing of “Wild Adirondacks” during the lunchbreak, and an afternoon session from 2-7 p.m.

The morning will begin with an introduction that includes visuals and camera technique information plus some time for Q & A. The afternoon will start in the theater with a general public showing of Wild Adirondacks which features Carl’s photography. This is followed by time in the field, working with various photography techniques and equipment. Field photography will focus on lighting and composition, including working with wide angle, macro, telephoto, and panoramic nature photography techniques. While the photo techniques will apply to both digital and film photography, working with a digital SLR camera will offer the opportunity for image critiques during the photo shoots as well as offering more shooting options.

hhh — cool nights, warm days, rich harvest, fewer bugs, and the tang of woodsmoke and apples in the air. That’s what I’m talking about. Good sleeping weather, as we call it around here.

Time for hunters, hikers, and anyone who just loves the outdoors to start getting back in the woods again without worrying about being eaten alive.

In between your autumn adventures in our gorgeous surroundings, you might want to set aside some time for a couple of upcoming events that will enhance those outdoor experiences. A couple of weeks ago I mentioned the annual Field, Forest and Stream Festival this weekend, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at the museum in Elizabethtown. The Arts Council here in Westport, which organizes the event, is still looking for volunteers to help out for a few hours in exchange for free admission. Call 962-8778 if you’re interested. Attractions include Adirondack storyteller Bill Smith, the country and bluegrass group A Fine Mix, and the owls, hawks, reptiles, and other critters of naturalist Beth Bidwell. They’ll also be raffling off the win-

ner of this year ’s cover art competition, Chapel Pond Spiral by Sally Smith — a startling piece of outdoor art by a unique local artist.

Then Wednesday, Oct. 6, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Floral Hall at the fairgrounds, famed tracker and habitat specialist Susan Morse returns to Westport. Founder and director of the organization Keeping Track, Susan Morse appeared at the school in 2001, to an overflow crowd of more than 260. Now she’s back with a fascinating array of track molds, pelts, skulls, feet, and lots of engaging photographs and stories. There will also be a chance to sign up for a six-session tracking course this winter.

usiness should be up as normal for the village office in its new home. I didn’t hear any horror stories, so I hope this is a case of no news is good news and the transition was made smoothly.

Again the new address is 58 Liberty St. in Keeseville.

Coming up this Sunday, Sept. 26, from noon to 7 p.m. at the Krazy Horse Saloon in Plattsburgh will be a benefit for Roy Hurd.

Now I realize this is not in Keeseville and Roy is not a Keeseville resident, but Roy Hurd has many times used his musical talents to help others in need, including in Keeseville, on numerous occasions.

Recently the Hurd home was destroyed in a fire, which also destroyed most of his musical equipment. This was a financial loss for Hurd as insurance in the home does not cover business equipment, which means as a professional musician, his instruments. To help him rebuild his professional gear, at least 16 local acts will be performing throughout the day for a donation of $10 for

adults and $5 for children 12 and younger.

Food and refreshments will be available for purchase throughout the entire event. As Hurd is a very respected musician in the area, many impressive talents will be performing that day so please come out and enjoy the great music and help such a wonderful and giving talent in our community.

The very active Chesterfield Fish and Game Club will have another work party coming up this weekend both Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 25 and 26, for the purpose of working on the roof. The club requests you e-mail them if you can attend and please bring your own tools.

Some of our seasonal food attractions are closing up for the winter. This past weekend saw the end of Big Daddy’s BBQ for this year. Mac’s Ice Cream Stand will be closing down for the season in a couple of weeks, so now is the time to stop in for a last chance for the fine treats before they close for the winter. In honor of the season they now have apple cider shakes.

inny and I made our rounds this morning, stopping at the transfer station and then on to downtown, where an excavator was digging up Main Street. We saw the first length of sewer pipe placed in the trench and aligned with a laser.

The excavator will be used for trench work until serious rock is encountered, probably near the town hall. Then a giant toothed wheel will go into action, with perhaps some blasting to handle the most difficult sections.

This Saturday night, Sept. 25, a film by Iranian director Shirin Neshat will be shown at the Willsboro school. Shirin herself will be there to introduce the movie, which has earned great reviews and a big award in Venice. I believe she once had a house in Essex, and may now have a place in Westport. Her works are beautiful to look at and carry an air of deep mystery — it’s quite an honor to have such an accomplished

artist appear here.

My sweet corn crop was excellent this year, and the raccoons pretty much left it alone. In past years an electric fence was necessary to prevent wholesale theft. I did lose a few ears to coyotes, or at least I’ll blame them. They are neater eaters than raccoons, who get into the center of the patch and pull stalks down. Coyotes pull the ears off and carefully eat every last kernel, leaving the cob in the lawn. I suspect coyotes because nearby there was a telltale dropping, or as Amy might say, contribution.

I’ve been scouring farmers markets and local farm stands for garlic bulbs to plant next month. My garlic this year was on the small side, so I’m trying to improve my luck with some outside talent. Garlic should be planted in late October, so you have plenty of time to find local garlic and prepare the bed.

he weather has changed to the cooler side, especially at night. It is great to see several people enjoying the nicer sunny days as many are out walking, biking or jogging. It was noted on cable there is a walking group here in town in case you need the pleasure of joining in with others. I had a little visit with Peter Paine and he shared he and Patty recently enjoyed a nice trip on the Boquet River down to the mouth; they were able to enjoy the sight of many wild birds.

A quick follow up on some of our recent events — The primary election using the new machine seemed to go quite well. I think now the general election will be much smoother.

The results did show us the community’s choice as the top Republican candidate to be Darren Darrah, he will be up against Edward Hatch from the Democratic party for the supervisor’s position. I had a most interesting conversation with a newer couple living on the Point that had never seen the inside of our new school. They stopped at the School Gala last week and were most impressed on how nice it

was arranged, both of them retiring from the education field. The local seasonal farmer ’s market has come to a close, but they will be participating in the second annual Farmer ’s Market and Craft Show Nov. 20, at the Willsboro School gym. The fall schedule of the Champlain Valley Film Society is posted and the next film is “Women without Men” playing Sept. 25, at the Willsboro School starting at 8 p.m. The next public supper for the Willsboro United Methodist Church will be held Wednesday, Oct. 5, serving roast pork.

Many who read this paper will be glad to know real progress is being made on the improvement to the roadway of Route 22, part way up the mountain.

Short Film Festival comes to Lake Placid LAKE PLACID — Filmgoers in Lake Placid NY will unite with audiences in 203 cities spanning six continents to view and judge the next generation of filmmakers for the 12th Annual Manhattan Short Film Festival, which screen at The Lake Placid Center for the Arts Saturday, Oct. 2, 7:30 p.m.

Out of 440 entries received from 43 countries around the world, Manhattan Short selected 10 short films as finalists. Each film is 15 minutes or less in length. Countries represented this year include Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Croatia, Ireland, Mexico, France, Poland and Italy in what festival organizers described as the “United Nations of film festivals.”

Filmgoers will be handed a voting card upon entry and asked to vote for the one film they feel should win. Votes are tallied at each participating cinema and submitted to festival headquarters where the winner will be announced in New York City Sunday, Oct. 3 at 10 p.m.

ature Deficit Disorder: that is how author, Richard Louv described contemporary children’s separation from the natural world in his book, “Last Child in the Woods.” The author suggests that as more and more young people spend less and less time in the natural world and more and more time in the virtual world, they are suffering an important human centric disconnection.

The woods offered me and my friends a variety of opportunities for imaginative play. We used fallen branches to make swords for knuckle-busting sword duels or fiery musket shots.

We used the same sticks to make tee-pees, forts or lean-tos. We played war and camouflaged ourselves with leaves, ferns or pine boughs. We crawled on our bellies to escape detection, sometimes on wet or muddy ground. Later, we tracked animals, gasping at the size of tracks that might belong to a bear, bobcat or large buck. We spent countless hours in imaginary play with no adults around to impose their views or opinions.

My parents and my friends’ parents would consistently put us outside, whether it be to do chores, ride bikes, go fishing, play tag or to explore the woods. A child who stayed inside all the time was either ill or somehow very different from everyone else. Now the opposite seems to be true. How did we arrive at such a reversal of norms?

To some extent, perhaps we have all been seduced by technological innovations like the IPhone, the internet, sophisticated video games and on demand movies. Those opportunities were not even conceived of yet when I was a

kid. If those technologies had been available, my friends and I might well have got together to play virtual war or some other video game

While the television or the internet are not inherently bad for kids, like anything else, too much is too much. We cannot remove our children from modern technologies; to do so would be to leave them behind. Rather, we need to create more opportunities for children to explore and connect to the natural world.

Many parents are afraid to turn their children loose in today’s fearful, media-saturated world where entire television shows are dedicated to the rare but terrifying occurrence of child abduction or molestation.

The lure of sitting around a campfire, perhaps touching a moment experienced by humans for thousands of years is something that is very compelling and comforting. The gathering of the wood, the crack of wet pine catching fire and the smell of smoke as it passes by. Like the smell of campfire smoke on your clothes, these experiences will stay with children long after the lingering smell on their clothes has been washed away. Remember, all kids count

Don’t privatize Horace Nye

New school worth the cost

To the editor: Essex County Board of Supervisors: As a nurse at the Horace Nye Home, I am writing this letter to all of you as to my thoughts on the upcoming changes that are in the future for the home. I would like to take a moment first to remind you that none of you have family members that reside in the home.

I would also like to remind you that these individuals are not numbers; they are humans who actually formed the country into what was once a great place to live. They are our parents and grandparents who gave us our strength, brains, knowledge and education, so we can be who we are today.

How can we be so quick to change their lives? To throw them to the dogs, so to speak. They deserve much better than that.

I know that most of the departments with in the County are run on federal grants; the programs are basically paid for. Is this why the Home looks to be the only place that is costing the county money? No wonder. If you were to look within these departments and say, “Maybe we don’t need three secretaries who are playing solitaire on the computer while no one is looking, and just one,” we could save some money there also.

If this nursing home privatizes, their level of care will drastically drop.

We have all we can do now to keep them comfortable and happy, what will happen when four CNA’s taking care of 30 residents is cut to one or two?

These residents will then have increased risks for falls, bedsores, medication errors and health issues, not to mention emotional issues. Would you want your parent or grandparent to be treated like that?

Also this so-called State food that four residents tried: It’s made by prisoners for prisoners; you know, the child molesters, murderers, drug dealers, etc. You want to serve this to our elderly? They deserve prime rib and lobster. What is wrong with you?

I only hope that in your hearts, you can ask yourself the one question, that all of us may have to face one day “where am I going to put my parent when the time comes?!”

To the editor: This letter is in response to the one written by Sue Sherman to the Valley News on Sept. 11, 2010. In her letter, she wondered about the renovations to the old Willsboro Central School. She also expressed pity for the Willsboro District taxpayers and suggested perhaps we had been duped and spent too much on a new school. Ms. Sherman, you really should have done your homework. A simple Google search reveals that the Westport School District tax rate is 12.575 per thousand, meanwhile Willsboro’s is 11.06 per thousand. The Westport increase in levy was 4.45 percent, while Willsboro’s was listed as .02 percent. Westport’s total increase in budget was 2.45 percent, and Willsboro’s was .45 percent Our new school went from a three-story circa-1927 building to a single story multi-wing facility which is more fire safe, has no asbestos, and is more energy efficient. Our school has a new kitchen and cafeteria, which is a great improvement over the relatively small basement eating facilities in the old building. It has an auditorium which we did not have and this allows the school to have larger assemblies and bigger performances. We also have a state of the art sound system that was grant funded. All of these things have allowed the school to host the Champlain Valley Film Series as we have the seating capacity and facilities to host; this has helped to increase our community and social involvement in activities.

Our basketball court is now regulation size. The playing fields are attached to the school property, which we did not have before — they were across town and this was a safety concern. The school is now in a more convenient location with ample parking. We do not have children taking classes and trying to learn in trailers or “mobile classrooms” which were located in the parking lot; nor are they in the bus garage taking classes because there was just not enough room in the old school.

On top of this, Ms. Sherman, our taxpayers saved the cost of the demolition of the old school building, which was pegged at about $1 million. Now that building is being recycled and turned into housing for our Senior Citizens at no cost to the taxpayers. This has been a Win-Win for Willsboro.

Please take your pity and channel it toward the ever aging, circa-1920’s Westport Central School and the taxpayers of that district instead!

Man arrested for assaulting child

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com WESTPORT — State police recently arrested a Westport man for allegedly striking a young boy at a public event.

Richard F. Jensen, 50, was arrested Sept. 14, and charged with second degree assault, a class D felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor, after police say he hit a 6-year-old boy who was participating in a biddy soccer program.

The alleged incident occurred at roughly 3:30 p.m. during the initial stages of a biddy soccer practice held at Camp Dudley’s athletic fields.

One of the adults who was present during the alleged incident agreed to recount the events that took place there on condition of anonymity. They are referred to here as “Grambling.”

Grambling described the situation as a bizarre and shocking incident, escalating suddenly during an otherwise uneventful soccer practice.

“There’s no doubt that he struck a child,” said Grambling, noting Jensen was apparently responding to a “low-level exchange” between his child and the victim.

Grambling said Jensen acted as if he thought it was “justified and necessary” to intervene on his child’s behalf.

“He was definitely yelling and angry,” Grambling said, “He seemed intent on punishing the first grade kid for the apparent shoving of his kid.”

Grambling said they did not actually see Jensen strike the boy, but immediately looked when they heard the sound of the hit. It also drew the attention of most everyone else present.

“He was clearly injured and he fell to the ground,” Grambling explained.

About 25 children were present, said Grambling. Most of them were in grades K-2 and were surprised and confused at the sight of Jensen striking the boy. Roughly eight to 10 adults were there.

“Every adult was immediately between [Jensen] and the kid that he hit,” Grambling said, noting how coaches and volunteers tended to the boy with ice packs. “People were downright horrified.”

Grambling said they and the other adults worked to keep the other children focused on soccer and the parents of the victim from responding in a way they might regret. No actions

were taken against Jensen, who appeared relatively unphased by the situation.

“He proceeded to walk back to his lawn chair, put on his hat, and sat down like nothing had happened,” Grambling said.

As for the parents of the victim, Grambling said they did not try to interact with Jensen and were able to talk through their anger and horror regarding the whole situation.

“He and she both kept their distance [from Jensen], called the police, and took care of their son,” said Grambling.

Other adults moved the practice to another nearby field further away from Jensen and the victim. Grambling praised them for helping keep the practice going and taking some focus off of Jensen’s actions.

“Cooler heads prevailed,” said Grambling, “and despite what was obviously a poor choice on the part of [Jensen], there were a number of parents who did the best they could to protect the goal of getting kids to play soccer. It really could have been a lot worse.”

At one point, said Grambling, Jensen’s son apologized to the victim for his father ’s actions. Jensen himself, however, showed little remorse.

Police arrived shortly thereafter and took statements from the many witnesses. They also questioned Jensen himself, who Grambling said was taken into custody without incident.

State police investigator Marshall Rock confirmed Jensen was cooperative with troopers.

He also said there was no indication Jensen had been under the influence of alcohol.

Jensen was arraigned in Moriah Town Court and released on his own recognizance. With a charge of second degree assault, he could face a maximum of seven years in prison.

Grambling said all the adults who were present are likely to be cooperative with police as Jensen is prosecuted.

“Nobody wants the same thing to happen again,” they said, “and nobody is interested in having this fellow present at these events in the future.”

Cancer walk billed as a tribute and memorial This year’s event scheduled for Oct. 16 at the Essex County Fairgrounds WESTPORT — Those most affected by cancer will gather Oct. 16 at the Essex County Fairgrounds to walk shoulder-to-shoulder in a display of solidarity and strength against the debilitating disease.

The goal, organizers say, is to raise funds and awareness so that future generations may someday enjoy a cancer free planet.

The motivating factors for these people are many. Some have friends or relatives diagnosed with cancer. Some have been diagnosed themselves — and others have watched helplessly as the disease took someone they love.

Two of the organizers, Kari Ratliff and Kathi Desjardins fall into the latter category, having lost their mother, Honora Carpenter to breast cancer in March, 2009.

The walk, now in its fifth year, was originally organized by Honora — it is now in her honor. Her tremendous outlook on life and will to survive lives on in the hundreds who gather here each year.

This year will no doubt be the same, although the focus has been expanded to include all forms of cancer, not just the type that eventually took Honora's life, after years of battling the disease.

The theme of this year's walk is "Root for a Cure," and the logo is a tree of life whose roots are wrapped with brightly colored ribbons depicting the numerous types of cancer.

Attendees will each receive a t-shirt emblazon with a drawing of the logo, designed by Westport Central School senior Nancy Armitage.

Those participating will also be eligible for door prizes and other giveaways. The walk will be held, rain or shine, at 2 p.m., with registration beginning at 1.

The cost of the walk is $20 for those who register by Oct. 3, or $25 the day of the walk. A family living in the same household can participate for $55.

Every penny raised by the walk will remain local and will be distributed equally to local cancer facilities.

Oktoberfest returns to Whiteface Mountain WILMINGTON — It’s time to dust off the lederhosen, fire up the oompah band and enjoy some bratwurst and beer in one of the area’s most scenic autumn settings.

The 19th annual Whiteface Oktoberfest is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 2-3. The twoday festival offers fun for the entire family with traditional Bavarian food, drink and entertainment as well as art and craft vendors, rides and games.

As usual, the event will feature children’s rides, including the popular hayride and inflatables.

New games this year include volleyball, horseshoes and 60-second challenges with the chance to win prizes. Of course, the Whiteface Oktoberfest offers great traditional German music from die Schlauberger, performing under the entertainment tent outside the base lodge each day along with the Lake Placid Bavarians, who have been performing traditional Bavarian music in the north country for the last 19 years, and Ed Schenk on the accordion.

For the sixth consecutive year, the Cloudspin Lounge will also feature music from Schachtelgebirger Musikanten (Scha-Musi), and performing at their second Oktoberfest will be Spitze and the Alpen Trio.

Local libraries offering new online market research tool PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton-EssexFranklin Library System has purchased a new on-line market research tool, “Business Decision.”

The CEFLS received funds to purchase this subscription through a federal “Small Libraries Mean Business grant," administered by the New York State Library Division of Library Development. The project will literally “open li-

braries for business” with this cutting-edge research tool, available on-line to all residents of Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties who have a library card. Residents can also stop by their community library to log-on to the database and get help using this resource.

“The purpose of this grant is to help expand the resources available to small business owners through community libraries," said Julie

Wever, with CEFLS Outreach Services, who collaborated in the development of this grant proposal. “We worked with the North Country Small Business Development Center to help identify a resource that would best benefit the diverse small and non-profit business user groups in our communities."

The database is available on-line through the CEFLS Web site, www.cefls.org or in person at

all CEFLS community libraries. It will provide library users, small business owners, researchers, government agency personnel in the three-county area with specific detailed demographic information and business statistics.

This data can help any small business complete a detailed market analysis of very specific, user-defined geographic areas.

Two Johnsburg men charged with reckless endangerment on Hudson River

By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com INDIAN LAKE — The owner of Hudson River Rafting Company in North Creek, Pat Cunningham, and one of his guides, Heath Bromley, were charged this week with seconddegree reckless endangerment after allegedly sending customers down the Hudson River Gorge without a licensed guide and abandon-

ing others on the water.

Cunningham is accused of endangering customers on several occasions this summer. According to the Hamilton County District Attorney office, he sent a kayaker down the river without a licensed guide and abandoned a raft group, leaving them to finish half of their trip, again, without a licensed guide.

Three people were injured on the river this year while on Hudson River Rafter Company

trips, according to Hamilton County District Attorney James Curry.

One trip, guided by Bromley in August, included a group of children from New Jersey visiting the area on a trip through Longacre Expeditions, according to a complaint filed with forest ranger Steven Ovitt. The complaint revealed that the children had to hike to safety after being stranded on the river.

“The rangers who have worked on this right-

fully have a cause for concern,” said Curry.

Cunningham has operated his rafting business in North Creek and has guided trips on the Indian and Hudson Rivers for more than 30 years. He claims to have acted according to the law — endangering no one on either occasion.

He plans to plead not guilty to the charges.

Both Cunningham and Bromley are free and awaiting an appearance in Indian Lake Town Court.

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The United Way of the Adirondack Region Inc. has officially begun its 2010-11 fundraising campaign.

The nonprofit organization — which helps partnering agencies in Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties — announced at its annual

campaign kick-off breakfast Sept. 16, it aims to raise $750,000.

John C. Bernardi, the nonprofit organization’s executive director, explained the amount reflects both a continued need throughout the region and the inclusion of partnering agencies in Franklin County to be helped by the local United Way. “Our United Way is evolving. We’re growing, we’re evolving and we’re adapting,” said Bernardi. “If there was ever a time we needed to raise more money, now is the time.”

Kirk A. Stallsmith, general manager of the Plattsburgh Georgia-Pacific facility, who

serves as chairperson of this year’s United Way fundraising campaign team, said he hopes to build on the success of last year’s campaign, which raised $700,000 for the United Way’s more than 30 partner agencies.

“We’re very blessed to have a group of people in the community with heart and commitment to the community,” Stallsmith said of past fundraising campaign supporters.

Though the local United Way now covers three counties and is aiming to raise an additional $50,000 this year, Stallsmith said he feels confident people will see the need and once again step up to the plate to help.

“The challenge is there and I think we’re up to it,” he said.

Bernardi credited the work of the fundraising campaign for knocking on doors and asking people to dig a little deeper into their pockets this year to help the less fortunate through United Way. “There’s just a great deal of synergy and energy and enthusiasm and it’s helped us be able to reach out to places that we’ve not been able to reach before,” said Bernardi. “I think we’ve built a network that has been really productive for us. The biggest rutabaga, weighing in at 6.3 pounds, was grown by Everett Stuart of Wells.

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com It’s been said the best way to help the economy is often to shop locally. This idea has sparked a campaign known as $25 on the 25th.

The main goal of the campaign is to get people to spend at least $25 in a locally shop or restaurant this Saturday, Sept. 25.

The campaign originally began with the New York Press Association in an effort to “create some excitement in downtowns across the state,” according to NYPA executive director Michelle Rea. “Essentially the publishers came to the board and talked about how downtown merchants and Main Street merchants have been really suffering for quite some time and they felt the newspapers should do something,” said Rea. “To make citizens aware of how vital the role is that downtown merchants play in distinguishing communities from one another.”

Rea explained NYPA felt that by newspapers banding together across the state, there would be more publicity. To help spread the word, they teamed up with the New York State Economic Development Council and the New York State Conference of Mayors to get the campaign up and running.

NYSEDC executive director Brian McMahon explained shopping local actually has numerous benefits.

“When we spend money in our community it comes back to us in the form of increased sales tax dollars, which get reinvested back into the community,” said McMahon. “But, more importantly … I think it reintroduces and reacquaints the community with the quality and diversity of retail establishments within their community.”

Rea said if people show enough support for the project, NYPA hopes to have the campaign happen more than once a year.

“People need to remember that if you don’t want those stores to go missing or those restaurants to go missing, you need to support them,” she said.

The proposal, which drew a lukewarm response from county officials, was the only bid submitted in response to a request for proposals seeking to determine interest in the facility among private entities.

Politi said the second option would be to consider accepting this proposal, which would keep the home in county hands with a month-by-month contract for management services.

“I really can’t see bringing in outside management while we continue to pay,” said Moriah supervisor Tom Scozzafava.

The third option, said Politi, would be to seek a marketing broker to assist in selling the facility to a private entity.

Privatization would remove Horace Nye and its approximately $4 million net expenses from the county budget, but some fear the home would serve far less indigent seniors as a private institution.

Aprivate facility would also lead to fewer staff with lower pay since employees at the home would no longer be a part of union negotiations with the county.

Fourth, Politi noted, county officials could conduct their own intensive study to come up with new management strategies for Horace Nye that would reduce costs.

“If we decide to go in that direction, our county manager is going to have to make specific recommendations that we can move forward with.”

The fifth option, according to Politi, would be to simply close

Ultimately, they decided to continue their strategy thus far: explore possibilities for privatization while simultaneously considering how the facility can operate more cost effectively under county ownership.

Committee chair Roby Politi, supervisor of North Elba, stressed the need to take decisive action after having gleaned information from a number of sources showing the difficulty in getting a publicly-owned nursing home to operate in the black.

“It’s a very difficult decision,” Politi said. “It’s something that nobody wants to discuss, but it has to be done now.”

Politi outlined five options for the committee to consider, the first of which would be to rebuild the facility in a new location, allowing for new rates to be established and for the ability to add new services that could potentially bring in additional revenue.

“The cost will be in the millions of dollars,” Politi said, “and I don’t think it’s something we can justify in these times.”

In the committee’s previous meeting Aug. 30, representatives from the Florida-based firm Traditions Management presented their proposal to act as a private operator of the county-owned facility, lowering costs significantly in exchange for five percent of

“I don’t think any member of this board of supervisors is in favor of that option,” said Scozzafava.

“I look at these five choices, and I only see three and four as options we should be looking at,” said Chesterfield supervisor Gerald Morrow. Most others generally agreed.

Scozzafava and others spoke against privatization, and Jay supervisor Randy Douglas said he’d received a 900-signature petition opposing the sale or closure of Horace Nye. Still, all generally agreed putting Horace Nye on the market would better allow the county to gauge interest from private companies.

“The companies that are interested in this type of project are not looking for RFPs,” said county manager Dan Palmer, referring to a request for proposal. “They’re looking for a broker to bring it to them.”

According to Palmer, Medicaid-funded residents, which make up nearly 97 percent of residents at Horace Nye, still represent about 70-80 percent of beds at privately-run nursing homes.

Still, with the previous RFP receiving such limited interest, even those favoring privatization recognized the need for new operational strategies.

“If you can’t market the place, the fallback is we need to run this facility,” Politi said.

Race for sheriff features familiar faces

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — Two candidates will be on the ballot this November for the position of Essex County Sheriff, the most heavily contested county-wide election this season.

Michael “Ike” Tyler of Westport, who narrowly lost to the late Sheriff Henry Hommes in last year ’s election, returns to face Elizabethtown resident Richard Cutting, who was appointed acting Sheriff following Hommes’ death.

“I always knew I was going to run for sheriff again,” said Tyler. “I just didn’t know it would be this soon.”

A retired state corrections officer with more than 25 years experience, Tyler holds a degree in Business Administration and has served as a member of the Westport Town Board for the past 15 years.

Tyler argued he could use that experience to do more with less as Sheriff, utilizing staff and other resources more efficiently for a leaner budget.

“I’ve looked at the budget, and I think it’s time the Sheriff ’s department is run like a business,” Tyler said.

One major area he’d look to trim is the number of supervisory staff in the department, claiming there are too many of the highly-paid positions. Tyler also said he would want to re-evaluate the need for all the vehicles the department uses.

Altogether, Tyler claims he could trim between $200,000 and $300,000 from the Sheriff ’s department budget, depending on the number of retirements.

“I’d start better training the staff,” Tyler added. “From what I understand, they need more training.”

some of the more challenging situations that come with housing federal inmates at the jail, thereby improving staff morale.

Also, he would make sure to institute an alcohol and substance abuse program for inmates to further reduce the recidivism rate.

“I’d also want to create inmate work crews,” Tyler said. “Other counties do it, so we should be able to do that.”

Tyler also said he would do a better job managing deputy road patrols by actively communicating with local municipalities about where patrols are needed.

Overall, Tyler said his fresh approach to the post would lead to a more efficient and effective Sheriff ’s department.

“It won’t be business as usual if I’m elected Sheriff; that’s for sure.”

Tyler may have a big hill to climb, however, as he attempts to win the position from Cutting, who has been a member of the Essex County Sheriff ’s Department since 1977.

Cutting steadily climbed through the ranks to become jail administrator and was chosen as Undersheriff in 2008.

“I’ve been here 33 years; 31 of it in the old jail,” said Cutting. “We have this new facility here that I had an integral part in designing and building. I feel I’m fairly young at 55 years old, and I want to be here to see that things keep running the way they have been.”

Essex County Republican committee members gave overwhelming support to Cutting at their Sept. 15 meeting and will be on the Republican line of November ’s ballot.

One of the things Cutting is most proud of, he said, is the substantial revenue the department has been able to generate by housing federal and out-of-county inmates at the new jail.

“We built this jail with the needs of Essex County in the next 30 years in mind,” Cutting said, noting how extra cells are being used in the more immediate future to gener-

ate $1.3 million for the county in 2009 with expectations to exceed that in 2010.

“I’d like to see the Sheriff ’s office be a vital resource for Essex County,” Cutting said, noting the many services offered, including D.A.R.E., child seat checks and identification cards, and proactive enforcement of the sex offender registry and sales of alcohol to minors.

Cutting said his campaign thus far has been focused on getting better name recognition while dispelling some of the unfounded rumors surrounding both him and the department he now manages outright.

One such rumor, he said, is that he plans to retire in the near future.

“If my intent was to retire, I would have taken the three-year retirement incentive,” he said. “If I’m running, I’m running for the full four-year term.”

He also takes issue with Tyler ’s suggestion that morale needs to improve at the new jail.

“The rumor is that the morale is horrible,” said Cutting, “and my answer is, ‘Go and talk to one of the officers.’”

Cutting said the department holds regular meetings with both supervisory staff and corrections officers to address various issues and makes those conversations available within the department.

“I have six supervisory staff for four shifts, which is the minimum recommended by the state,” said Cutting, who said the department already operates with a fiscally responsible budget.

“I’m looking forward to the challenges of the office of Sheriff,” said Cutting. “I’m going to do the best job I possibly can to bring honor and respect to the office of Sheriff and the Essex County Sheriff ’s Office.”

Benefit concert for Roy Hurd this Sunday Music community coming together to help one of their own

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — When Roy Hurd lost his home in Lake Clear to a devastating fire in July, he lost everything.

“It’s been kind of crazy,” said Hurd, a well-known local singer and songwriter and Redford native. “Some days, it feels like things are okay and getting back to normal and other times it kind of hits me when I go to reach for something we don’t have anymore or we think about something we lost that we hadn’t thought about. Things with strong emotional connections to history or the people we’ve known over the years.”

Hurd and his wife, Amy Kohanski, weren’t home at the time of the fire, which is something Hurd is extremely thankful for, he said. And, out of tragedy, Hurd said he gained a newfound appreciation for “what’s important.”

“We’re fortunate no one was home at the time. Something like this helps you understand what’s important and really makes you thankful for friends and family,” said

Hurd.

That’s the focus of a new song born from the loss he and his wife suffered, said Hurd, he titled “The More Permanent Things.”

“Those are the things I set my heart on because the other things are not permanent at all,” said Hurd, who is now living with his wife in an apartment they’ve rented in Saranac Lake.

Though Hurd’s home was insured there are still some things that will be irreplaceable, like keepsakes and even a special edition Fender guitar that was given to him as a gift.

Longtime friend Timothy C. Hartnett was with Hurd and Kohanski when they learned of the tragedy.

“We were out to eat and had just finished our meal and Roy’s phone rang,” recalled Hartnett. “He didn’t answer it because he didn’t recognize the number. It rang again and he still didn’t answer it. Then, it rang a third time and I said, ‘Roy, maybe you better pick it up. It could be an emergency.’”

Little did Hartnett know, he was right. The call ended up being from one of Hurd’s neighbors telling him his house was on fire.

“It was just terrible,” Hartnett said of the news.

Not long after, Hartnett rallied many of Hurd’s musician friends to put together a concert for Hurd and his wife, both to entertain them and to help them raise money for any things they may need that their insur-

ance doesn’t cover.

“I just felt, with Roy being a musician, it was only fitting the music community pull together to do a benefit concert,” said Hartnett.

It didn’t take long for more than a dozen acts to come together.

“It’s just indicative of the love people have for Roy,” said Hartnett. “The great thing is it’s not going to be just a benefit, it’s going to be a reunion bringing together all of Roy’s friends from over the years.”

Hurd said he was touched when he learned so many people plan to turn out to offer their support.

“I’ve written and sing songs about the unique beauty of this region and the people around here for decades,” said Hurd, “but, to be on the receiving end of such kindness and such support is overwhelming.”

The benefit concert will be held this Sunday, Sept. 26, at the Krazy Horse Saloon, 14 Margaret St., this Sunday beginning at 12 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by the Blind Pig Blues Band, Celia Evans, Crossing North, Eat. Sleep. Funk., Eileen Egan Mack, Howard Jennings, Junior Barber, Lady Luck, Lucky Boyz, Mark Elliott, Mike Kennedy, Natalie Ward Band, Speedy Arnold, Strictly Sunday, Vince Consoli, and Zip City Blues Band with Chas Eller. Hurd will also perform at the event with Meadow Merry.

The event will include a silent auction. Refreshments will be served.

Krazy Horse Saloon in Plattsburgh will host a benefit for Roy Hurd and Amy Kohanski this Sunday, Sept.

26. The couple lost their Lake Clear home to fire in July.

The cost is a $10 donation at the door for adults and $5 for children.

Westport showed signs of a comeback early in the second when David Quaglietta scored off an assist from Jack Newberry, but it would be as close as the Eagles would get as Keene held them to just three shots on goal.

Westport goalie Ethan Markwica stopped 22 of Keene’s 29 shots.

Football AuSable Valley 20, Canton 12 CLINTONVILLE — AuSable Valley relied on good defense and a strong running game as they rallied to defeat Canton in the Northern Football Conference Sept. 17.

Jordan Bouyea led the way for the Patriots, rushing for 123 yards on 22 carries and scoring the deciding touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, quarterback Austin House amassed 102 rushing yards of his own and threw 3-of-9 for 85 yards, including a 55yard touchdown pass to Connor Manning just before halftime that erased Canton’s early 6point lead. House took it on himself in the third to give AuSable the lead.

The Golden Bears also showed strength in the running game, led by Jesse Miller with 136 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries. Victor Sanders opened the scoring with an end zone dive in the first. AuSable Valley’s defense proved too much, however, forcing three interceptions and a fumble.

Tupper Lake 49, St. Lawrence 32 TUPPER LAKE — St. Lawrence outscored the Lumberjacks 32-14 in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late as Tupper Lake held on for the win in the Northern Football Conference Sept. 18.

Led by the running attack of Josh Facteau with 222 yards on 15 carries and five touchdowns, the Lumberjacks cruised to their first win of the season, holding St. Lawrence to 45 first-half yards and building a 35-0 lead after three quarters.

Tupper Lake averaged more than 10 yards per carry as a team.

Backup quarterback Corey Labarge led the late rally for the Larries, hitting 3-of-5 for 92 yards, including touchdown passes to Tyler Smith and Quinn Patraw.

Facteau continued to elude the St. Lawrence defense, however, breaking free for touchdown runs of 26 and 65 yards in the fourth quarter.

Saranac Lake 41, Seton Catholic 0 SARANAC LAKE — The Red Storm continued their unbeaten streak with a convincing win against Seton Catholic in the Northern Football Conference Sept. 18.

Saranac Lake’s starting offense put 22 points up on the board within the first seven minutes of the game with rushing touchdowns from Mike Phelan and Peter Madden and a 23yard pass from Forrest Morgan to Austin McDonough.

The Red Storm reserves then continued the onslaught, helped by a stalwart defense that held Seton to just 100 yards of total offense with two interceptions. Mark Ryan accounted for much of the Knights’ effort with 44 yards on eight carries.

Ethan Barge led the Saranac Lake rushing attack with five carries for 98 yards and two touchdowns. Collectively, the Red Storm had 18 carries for 188 rushing yards. Phelan, Morgan, and Ben Monty combined to pass 5-of-9 for 98 yards.

Boys Soccer Elizabethtown Lewis 2, Schroon Lake 1, 2OT LEWIS — The Lions let the lead slip late in the second half, but salvaged the win against Schroon Lake in MVAC boys soccer Sept. 14.

Elizabethtown opened the scoring early in the second half with an unassisted goal by Louis Scaglione. With staunch defense from Cortland Mowery and goalie Justin LaPier, the Lions nearly held on to that lead for good.

But Jesse Shaughnessy kept the Wildcats in the game, scoring the equalizer with just 43 seconds left in regulation.

The Lions would redeem themselves in the second overtime, however, when Brody Hooper headed in a corner kick by Hunter Mowery.

Chazy 2, Willsboro 0 WILLSBORO — The reigning state champions notched yet another win as Chazy downed Willsboro in MVAC boys soccer Sept. 14.

The Eagles defense held Willsboro’s high-powered offense to just two shots on goal in a game dominated by defense.

Jordan Barriere was key for Chazy, scoring the first goal unassisted and assisting on the second, both in the first half.

Cody Sayward recorded five saves for the Warriors, who themselves limited Chazy to just eight shots on goal.

Keene 5, Westport 1 WESTPORT — Keene’s experience was quite a match for the young Eagles as the Beavers rolled to a 5-1 win in MVAC boys soccer Sept. 16.

Midfielder Dylan Boyle notched a goal and an assist in both halves as Keene jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the half. Austin Holbrook also added two goals, and Sam Earl extended the

Hunter Dominy assisted two Brandon Laurin goals over the span of two minutes in the first half, then added two of his own in the second with Laurin returning the favor on one.

Nathan Reynolds also recorded an assist.

Chazy finished with a 20-5 shot advantage. Justin LaPier grabbed 15 saves for the Lions.

Seton Catholic 2, Lake Placid 1, OT LAKE PLACID — Lake Placid held the Knights scoreless through 39 minutes of play, but couldn’t hold on in CVAC boys soccer Sept. 17.

Keegan Barney scored unassisted 27 minutes into the first half, giving the Blue Bombers a lead that held until Seton Catholic’s Adam Tedford found Inigo Semprun in the box with just 49 seconds left in regulation.

Semprun and Tedford would combine for yet another goal six minutes into the first overtime to seal the comeback victory.

Anthony Kordziel recorded 19 saves for Lake Placid as Seton finished with a 30-11 shot advantage.

Elizabethtown-Lewis 5, Keene 1 LEWIS — Elizabethtown-Lewis shared the ball and the goals as they defeated the Beavers in a non-league boys soccer match Sept. 18.

Hunter Mowery and Connor Apthorp each recorded a goal and an assist as the Lions outshot Keene 20-9. Zach Denton, Tyler White, and Louis Scaglione each added goals for Elizabethtown-Lewis.

Keene’s lone goal came with 15 minutes gone in the second half when Jamie Kaltenbach scored off an assist from Dylan Boyle. James Bell was busy in the Beavers’ net with 17 saves.

Girls Soccer Saranac Lake 1, Northeastern Clinton 1 SARANAC LAKE — The Red Storm salvaged a tie with a late surge against Northeastern Clinton in CVAC girls soccer Sept. 14.

Chelsea LaFountain scored with 12 minutes remaining off an assist from Hope Laramee to erase the Cougars’ 1-0 lead.

Goalie Regan Kieffer was key for Saranac Lake, stopping 27 shots in a game where they were outshot 32-11. Northeastern Clinton’s Mallory Honan scored unassisted mid-way through the first half.

Lake Placid 4, Seton Catholic 0 LAKE PLACID — It took some time, but the Blue Bombers eventually showed their dominance against Seton Catholic in CVAC girls soccer Sept. 14.

After a scoreless first half, Brenna Whitney sparked a big run by Lake Placid 23 minutes into the second when she scored off an assist from Ayla Thompson. She would tally an assist nearly 4 minutes later on a goal by Dakota Flynn.

Mackenzie Kemmerer would add two more goals before the game was through as the Blue Bombers outshot the Knights 24-9.

Elizabeth Leff recorded six saves for the shutout.

AuSable Valley 9, Northern Adirondack 0 ELLENBURG — The Patriots, one of the favorites in CVAC girls soccer this year, made quite a statement against NAC Sept. 14.

Amanda Hamilton scored twice in the first six minutes to lead a relentless attack by AuSable Valley, which finished with a 30-2 advantage in shots and led 5-0 at the half. Hamilton and teammate Bryce Allen each finished with three goals.

Sidney Flint added a goal while Johanna Recny added two goals and an assist. Rachel Knapp finished with three assists in the one-sided victory.

Girls Soccer Continued Chazy 7, Willsboro 0 CHAZY — The Warriors couldn’t seem to get anything going against Chazy in MVAC girls soccer Sept. 15.

The reigning league champions outshot Willsboro 35-0 on their way to a decisive victory.

Hannah Laurin led with two goals and an assist. Chelsea Guay added a goal and an assist, and Alexis Bushey added three assists as six different players scored.

Courtney Blanchard was busy in the Willsboro net with 18 saves.

Elizabethtown-Lewis 2, Schroon Lake 0 SCHROON LAKE — The Lions kept the pressure on and finally powered past Schroon Lake in MVAC girls soccer Sept. 15.

Indian/Long Lake 2, Westport 1 WESTPORT — The Orange made the most of their limited opportunities, upending Westport in MVAC girls soccer Sept. 15.

The Eagles made plenty of threats, amassing 26 shots while limiting Indian Lake-Long Lake to just 10, but that was enough for Carli Reynolds to find the net late in the first half and again in the second.

Christina Sherman knotted things up, scoring with just 30 seconds gone by in the second half. It would prove to be the only goal Westport would sneak past Orange goalie Allison Pine, who grabbed 22 saves.

Molly Rascoe had eight saves for the Eagles.

An Adirondack battle Patriots and Red Storm play to 2-2 tie

Keene 2, Minerva-Newcomb 1 KEENE — The Beavers got the first win of the season Sept. 15, with a 2-1 win against Minerva-Newcomb in MVAC girls soccer.

Emma Gothner opened the scoring by converting a penalty kick mid-way through the first half. Jessica Caner increased the lead with an unassisted goal in the second as Keene outshot the Moutaineers 22-5.

Minerva-Newcomb’s Shelby Hogan cut the lead to one with 11 minutes left, but the Beavers held on for the win. Megan Hall recorded three saves for the win.

Chazy 2, Elizabethtown-Lewis 0 LEWIS — Chazy’s offense proved too much for the Lions to handle in MVAC girls soccer Sept. 17.

Astrid Kempainen’s long range goal early in the first half would put the Eagles ahead for good as Elizabethtown-Lewis struggled to get anything going on offense. Chazy finished with a 21-4 shot advantage.

Kirsten Ashline had a stellar game in the net for the Lions, grabbing 19 saves, but the Eagles kept control and added another goal in the second when Emily LaPierre assisted Megan Reynolds.

Willsboro 2, Schroon Lake 1 WILLSBORO — The Warriors rallied and found their way past Schroon Lake in MVAC girls soccer Sept. 17.

Renee Marcotte gave Willsboro the lead mid-way through the second half after having been down 1-0 in the first.

Sarah Mahler scored for the Wildcats with 21 minutes gone in the first half, but that lead would crumble a few minutes later when Hannah Bruno scored on a penalty kick.

Each team recorded 12 shots on goal with Courtney Blanchard grabbing 11 saves for Willsboro’s win.

Keene 4, Westport 2 KEENE — The Beavers showed significant scoring prowess as they came back to beat Westport in MVAC girls soccer Sept. 17.

Christina Sherman gave Westport an early lead with a direct kick. Keene’s Emma Gothner answered late in the first off an assist from Anna Kowanko, but Delaney Sears would give the Eagles a 2-1 lead at the half.

Jessica Caner broke through twice for the Beavers in the second half, however, assisted

by Amanda Boyle on both occasions. Boyle added a goal of her own that put Keene ahead for good, despite being outshot 12-9.

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — A close match between two division rivals made for some exciting action Sept. 17, as AuSable Valley and Saranac Lake played to a 2-2 tie in CVAC boys soccer.

The two teams proved to be evenly matched as they both tallied several shots on goal.

The Patriots finished with a 24-22 advantage in shots.

“We had our opportunities and they had their opportunities,” said Saranac Lake head coach Bill Wilson. “Unfortunately, they got one goal at the beginning that they shouldn’t have got.”

Robert Lee opened the scoring early in the first half off a cross from Alex Connor in front of the goal box, but Saranac Lake soon knotted things up at one apiece when Pat McHugh put a ball out in front for Will Fieroh, who beat his defender and scored from 10 yards out.

“When we possessed the ball, we clearly outplayed them,” said Patriots head coach Rick Hamilton, “but we got into the habit of banging the ball up and down the field, which is exactly what [Saranac Lake] wanted to do.”

The trend continued in the second half as Saranac Lake developed most of their scoring chances in transition. McHugh weaved past defenders to score on an open net for a 2-1 lead.

AuSable Valley kept the pressure on, drawing several direct kicks and corner kicks, but many of their opportunities were stifled by strong defensive play from Saranac Lake fullbacks Wyatt Daviaut and Idriz Cecunjanin and goalie Ricky Schmidt.

“They were very fast,” said Hamilton of the Red Storm, “They got up and down the field well and they defended well in their half. They were very physical and very aggressive.”

With just 96 seconds remaining, the Patriots broke through when Ryan Lee quickly played an indirect kick ahead to Sean Pulsifer, who found the lower right corner for the equalizer.

The back-and-forth play continued through two overtime periods, but defense prevailed as Schmidt and AuSable Valley goalie Jeremy Wood both made some crucial saves.

“I was really impressed with how we came back with just a minute and a half left,” Hamilton said. “That was a real team lifter. It would have been nice if we would have won, but we’re happy with a tie rather than a loss.”

It’s the most wonderful time of the year ...

I broke out a pair of SmartWool socks this morning, pulled on a flannel shirt and could see my breath as I strolled to check the mailbox.

God, I love fall.

I feel sorry for folks who live south of the MasonDixon Line. They may get to golf year-round, but I’ll take the changing colors, the feel of a woodstove on a crisp autumn day and the deer season opener over that any day.

Speaking of deer season, early archery begins Monday with last year ’s tag. Monday is also my son, Harrison’s 10th birthday — and, as he keeps reminding me, “I’ll be old enough to hunt when I’m 10.”

Unfortunately, the law says otherwise, even though Harrison would probably be a more competent hunter at 10 than many

adults I know.

Either way, I hope to immerse him as much as possible this year. Introducing a kid to the outdoors at a young age is hugely important — it is such a healthy alternative to the computer/video/television world with which they are inundated.

Plus it might just give him an incentive not to move south following graduation.

Keeping track On another note, the Champlain Valley Conservation Partnership is hosting a really cool event the evening of Oct. 6 in Floral Hall at the Essex County Fairgrounds.

ccording to the calendar, autumn has officially arrived and it appears to be in full swing. Frost is on the ground, hillsides are sprouting color and long V’s of geese can be seen overhead. For many, the change can’t happen fast enough.

On the ponds, brook trout are again on the take, as are bass on the lakes. A sweet mustiness of decay now scents the forest’s far reaches, while oyster mushrooms again adorn the fallen beeches.

The return of autumn’s cooler weather is always a welcome event. It signals the gradual transition from tourist season to hunting season, as great camps close and deer camps open.

It comes at a time when the faces on Main Street are mostly familiar again and piles of firewood begin to appear in front yards.

Although 2010 is on track to be the warmest year ever in recorded history, Adirondack residents know what to expect.

Storm windows will be installed, the chimney cleaned and doors will be protected from drafts.

Before too long, snow will again cap the mountain peaks. Now is the time to enjoy a season that offers the very best of the natural world.

Autumn delivers a multitude of outdoor activities, cooler days, quieter woods and

calmer waters.

Most of all, it provides local residents with a realization that we have chosen the very best place in which to live.

Invasives invade the Park I received the press release on Friday afternoon. It was an announcement that Department of Environmental Conservation had found spiny water fleas in Great Sacandaga Lake near Speculator.

According to the release, our newest invader is “a native to Eurasia. It feeds on tiny crustaceans and plankton that are food for native fish and other species. Their tail spines get caught on fishing lines.”

“Unfortunately, another invasive species has spread in the waters of New York state,” said Steve Sanford, director of DEC’s Office of Invasive Species Coordination. “DEC and its many partners are doing our best to alert water-based recreationists to the presence of non-native invasive species in our waters and will continue to promote practices that minimize the spread of these non-natives.”

The presentation begins at 6:30 p.m. and the suggested donation is $2 per person or $5 for a family.

It is not the first time Morse has visited Westport offering her photography and expertise in identifying animals and the signs they leave behind.

Chris Maron, executive director of the Conservation Partnership, said Morse visited nearly a decade ago and drew a large audience.

“When she was here in 2001, we had an overflow audience of over 260 people who enjoyed seeing the furs and discovering ways to find signs of animal activity,” Maron said. “They especially liked her beautiful pictures and listening to stories illustrating an extensive knowledge and sometimes controversial ideas about wildlife.”

Westport naturalist and guide Elizabeth Lee echoed Maron’s comments.

“The Keeping Track Wildlife Event gives people, especially families, an opportunity to enjoy an educational and inspiring evening,” Lee said. “Full-time residents, visitors, loggers, hikers, hunters, farmers, teachers, nature enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the outdoors will appreciate learning more about the Champlain Valley’s wildlife.”

Maron said the program was made possible with help from the Northeast Wilderness Trust, the Adirondack Council, Champlain National Bank, Dogwood Bread Company, Presently, the DEC is nearly impotent in terms of stopping the spread of invasive species. They simply do not have the tools, or the teeth, to combat this growing threat.

Instead of protecting our lakes and rivers by law, as in “it is illegal to..,” the DEC’s current approach is to “suggest that to help prevent the spread DEC recommends the following steps…”

New York currently does have a law to prevent a person from knowingly transporting Eurasian milfoil or water chestnuts.

The law is under Sec. 11-0507. Liberation of fish, shellfish and wildlife. It states, “No person shall intentionally liberate zebra mussels into any waters of the state. No person shall buy, sell, or offer to buy or sell, or intentionally possess or transport zebra mussels except under a license or permit issued pursuant to section 11-0515. Zebra mussels, except those lawfully held pursuant to a license or permit, may be destroyed by any person at any time.

Sec. 11-0509. Water chestnut. No person shall plant, transport, transplant or traffic in plants of the water chestnut or the seeds or nuts thereof nor in any manner cause the spread or growth of such plants.”

However, there is no such law to prohibit Asian clams, spiny water fleas, or any of the other known threats. This oversight must be addressed.

While inspecting a boat on the trailer, Sann noticed clumps of zebra mussels, on the hull, the motor and the transom. The owners explained the boat had come from Saratoga Lake.

With the owner's permission, Sann removed all the mussels he could, by hand and then suggested they power wash the boat at a local car wash. According to news reports, “they politely refused.” Unfortunately, lake stewards have no legal authority.

Asian clams, Eurasian milfoil, Zebra Mussels, Didymo, spiny water fleas and water chestnuts have already invaded numerous Adirondack lakes. Lake Champlain currently has at least 48 known varieties of invasive species.

In terms of economic benefits, our freshwater resources are the goose that lays the Golden Egg. It has been estimated that three quarters of all visitors to the Adirondacks are seeking freshwater recreation.

Invasive species are a threat to our woods and waters, they threaten our way of life, our economic future and our cherished traditions. The combination of climate change and increased globalization will certainly accelerate the process.

Voluntary compliance will not prevent the spread; it is a threat that must be confronted by law.
