More than a dozen volunteers joined a crew from Pettinelli and Associates on the half-acre lot to install newly purchased playground equipment, the result of a fundraising initiative that began earlier this year.

new life into Lewis playground was donated by Graymont quarries, around the new implements later in the week, and the playground could be ready for use as early as Sept. 18.

“I have two kids at home personally who are chomping at the bit to get out and play on the playground,” she said.

The playground now features two separate structures; one designed for young children and toddlers and another for ages 6-12.

A new swingset features four swings plus two toddler swings.

Work on the site will continue next year with plans to construct a pavilion with picnic tables. Garvey said the town has applied for a grant to help offset its cost.

Meanwhile, plans are under way to hold an annual chicken barbecue fundraiser to provide funds for future maintenance and possible additions, such as landscaping and updates to the basketball court.

“I’m very pleased,” said Garvey. “I’m just overwhelmed with the amount of support we’ve gotten.”

I

saw Molly Rascoe at school the other day and we had brief chat. It had been a while since I'd seen her and I enjoyed catching up on her activities. She's playing in the goal for the girls soccer team and looked fit as a fiddle.

Molly, as you probably know, has been struggling with a rare autoimmune disease that caused her to have kidney failure. She's doing well, and she and her family hope that on September 30 her doctor will certify that she's been in remission for six months and is eligible for a kidney transplant.

Her aunt was willing to donate a kidney to Molly but they learned recently that she's not able to be a donor. Molly's parents had already been screened out, so Molly and her family are looking for potential donors with type O or type B blood. They've asked me to help get the word out.

his is the big week for the village offices. They will be moving into their new home at the end of this week. During the summer, an addition had been built onto the building next to the tennis/basketball court. Officially, the village of Keeseville offices will be closed Sept. 17 all day so the offices can be moved over to the new building across the street. The offices are to reopen in their new home Monday, Sept. 20, for regular business hours. Good luck to all involved in the move.

The new address for the offices will be 58 Liberty St., Keeseville, N.Y. 12944. I am assuming, and I stress the word “assuming” as I failed to double check this, the phone number of 8349059 is staying the same. If I have this incorrect, I will give the new number in the next column.

This is also the week the first new water bills will be sent out to Keeseville residents. Again, the water billing has now changed from a flat rate charge to a usage rate based on readings from the water meters. I realize there has been

much talk about this, which is understandable.

I always liked the flat rate as that was an amount we could count on and factor into our bills easily, but I can fully understand being charged for exactly what I use as making sense as well. Any questions or concerns should be directed to the village offices — just not this Friday.

I have to thank my readers as I have received numerous e-mails and on-the-street words about my recent skunk incident. My family and I will probably always refer to this as the Night of the Uber-Skunk! Again, these communications remind me why we decided to move out of Plattsburgh to a smaller community. Bailey has been allowed back in the house. Our headaches have passed (literally!) and, while there is still a trace of odor in my library, things are returning back to normal — other than I use a huge power light when I take the dog out at night. Have a great week!

The quilt, made by Luvie Tuller, was handpieced and machine-made, which I believe means the decorative elements were stitched together by hand and then the whole thing was sewn up on a sewing machine. It will fit a double bed and should be very useful during the soon-to-arrive, well, shall we say, not-so-summery weather.

Our town clerk, Audrey Hoskins, took several of her cronies to Shelburne Farms in Vermont last Saturday, where they had a sumptuous breakfast. The omelet made with sausage, apple and cheese, all from the farm, was especially recommended. The opulent dining room is in a former Vanderbilt mansion, and you must have reservations. Our local ladies especially liked the chandeliers and the wide porch overlooking the lake, where hotel guests drink morning mimosas. They had a guided tour

of the property, along with a cheese tasting, and pronounced the staff, the food and entire occasion to be excellent. Mrs. Hoskins and her friends are fond of genteel customs and understated surroundings, and regularly motor to the Sagamore or Middlebury Inn to take tea.

Next week you can tour a couple of local farms, as part of Adirondack Harvest’s farm festival. On Tuesday, Sept. 21, Fledging Crow Farm on Route 9 south of Keeseville will be open from 10 a.m. to noon.

This is a recent start-up specializing in vegetables. On Friday, Sept. 24, Essex Farms will be open for a tour from 4 to 6 p.m. Essex Farms is a large CSA, or community supported agriculture, which means you as a patron pay a seasonal fee and receive a weekly allotment of farm produced food.

Both of these farms are models of what I think the future holds in farming, particularly in our region. Check out the Adirondack Harvest Web site for more information.

s I am sitting down to write this week’s news, our primary election has not happened yet. As a community we should be grateful that five people have stepped forward showing an interest in becoming our supervisor. Hope we had a good turn out to vote and offer the ranking of the public’s choice of who we would like to see as the top runners.

Curtis and Lisa Boardman are sporting pink balloons out front to mark the birth of their first grandchild; daughter Amie gave birth to Abigail Marie Boardman Sept. 9. They are now both home. Claudia and Clarence Russell also became grandparents this past week as their daughter gave birth to a bouncing baby boy, Luca Metz. Last weekend, Joey Belzile and Margo McKenna were united in marriage down in Essex with a reception at the Old Dock; congratulations!

Rev. McPheeters and lay reprehensive Janice Allen attended the gathering of the new formation of the United Methodist Church structure held in Albany Sept. 11. A part of the gathering was an inspiring tribute to the memory of the 9/11 attack. They joined in with around

2,000 other United Methodists for the start of something new. Happy to report the Reber United Methodist Church recently hosted a community pot luck meal for those living in Reber; they had a great time of fellowship.

We are happy to report Rev. John Hunn has returned home from the hospital. Rita Benedict has also returned home after a short stay in the hospital.

David Glenn gave a very interesting program on the Battle of Valcour. He is a very serious history researcher. Years after this important battle there were some unanswered questions. He has gathered many written sources about this battle and other related information that does help to come up with a more complete theory of how this battle was fought. The next Heritage program will be Friday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. at the Visitors Center. Shirley La Forest will share the history of Granges of our area.

Hunters’ Health Screening offered at ECH ELIZABETHTOWN — The annual Hunters’ Health Screening will take place at Elizabethtown Community Hospital Tuesday, Sept. 21, 5-7 pm. This free health screening will allow hunters the opportunity to have a physical that will assess their overall health before they set out into the woods to tag that trophy buck. Results will be reviewed by a physician that evening and an opportunity for a consultation will follow.

The health clinic will assess blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol and oxygen levels. Hospital staff will also check vision, height and weight, providing an overall health picture.

Participants will also have an EKG reading taken, an important test that measures heart health. A team of nurses and lab staff, led by Dr. Moisan, will conduct the health screening.

The hospital lobby will be filled with information related to hunting, hunting safety and regulations. A representative from the NYS Department of Conservation will be on-hand to answer questions in regard to laws and regulations. Local authors, safety instructors and hunting experts will be on-hand to discuss hunting in the local area.

fter years of decline in alcohol and illicit drug use among teenagers, a new report finds that significant increases have occurred.

The 2009 Partnership Attitude Tracking Study, released by the Partnership for a Drug Free America and MetLife, found dramatic spikes in past month alcohol use up by 11 percent and past year marijuana use up by 19 percent among U.S. students in grades 9-12. Teen attitudes towards alcohol and drug use have also changed. The percentage of teens agreeing that “being high feels good” increased from 45 percent in 2008 to 51 percent in 2009. Teens who said that “friends usually get high at parties” increased from 69 percent to 75 percent in the same time period.

The increases in alcohol and drugs among teens comes at a time when government funding for prevention programs has been on the decline for several years. Additionally, the ubiquitous presence of pro-alcohol and drug cues in popular culture undermine no-use messages from agencies, schools and, most of all, parents.

The reported increase in alcohol and drug use and attitudinal shifts were remarkable enough to provoke skepticism about the validity of the findings. PDFA chairman and CEO Steve Pasierb noted the PATS survey has been administered utilizing the same methodology for the past 21 years. The 2009 Monitoring the Future survey released in December also found the use of illicit drugs has leveled off or increased after years of steady declines. In addition, teen attitude favorable to drug use have increased.

The PATS survey found kids are almost as likely to get information about alcohol and drugs from the Internet and Web sites as from parents, school or media ads. YouTube is rife with teenagers telling about how

Congress voted to de-fund the state grants portion of the federal safe and drug free school programs effective 2011. Congress eliminated the funding, claiming the amount the average school received was too small to make a difference. With all due respect, Congress was wrong.

If prevention funding continues to evaporate, law enforcement, rehabilitation and health costs could outstrip prevention costs associated with diminishing alcohol and drug use.

An impressive body of research demonstrates prevention does work; it looks like the case for prevention must be proven yet again. Remember, all kids count.

To the editor: Harmony reigned at Harmony Golf Course on August 28th, 2010. The day was perfect with families, friends, and community all coming together to be part of the cure at the 1st Annual Golf Tournament for ALS Research.

Enjoying a beautiful setting, perfect weather, and great food, everyone there contributed to make the event a success.

We are approaching a total take of $35,000 with money still coming in, (thank you, thank you). We have been in close contact with ALS TDI who will receive $20,000 for their research, donated in the individual names of all our local ALS victims. They are so appreciative and were amazed by your outpouring of support and good will.

Recently we also received a call from Dr. Cudkowicz, the lead doctor for ALS research at Massachusetts General Hospital. She is a renowned researcher in this field, but took the time to express her appreciation for the donation that you all made possible. MGH will receive at least $15,000, (along with any additional donations as they come in), also donated in the individual names of our local ALS victims. (We are actively seeking matching funding for your donations too.)

The ALS Association recently posted some newly identified risk factors which include brain and spinal cord injuries, varsity athletics, and extreme physical activity. We all have a stake in supporting ALS research.

We are still waiting for some additional names of donors, but will soon post a list of all our sponsors and donors to publicly thank them for their support. To the editor: Last Saturday in Riverside Park in Saranac Lake, the first Farm2Fork Festival was launched. The Festival was a resounding success on many levels. Most of the Farmers and vendors left with full pockets and empty trucks. That was the goal of the festival, to help our farmers stay strong. Beyond that, the festival brought almost 400 people to town and many wandered through our beautiful downtown and spent at local businesses. Now that is a successful festival! Finally, the festival helped to build community and friendships. These will last forever. I want to thank my friends in the Adirondack Green Circle, who rally when the call goes out and who take on community efforts with enthusiasm and joy. I can't thank you enough. We are doing amazing things together!

Concert brings new twist on strings

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — The Piano by Nature concert series returns to the area this weekend, starting its 2010-2011 season with yet another unique musical experience.

Martha Mooke, a pioneer in the field of five-string electric viola, will perform at the Hand House in Elizabethtown Sept. 18 and 19, It marks the first of five concerts scheduled between September and May, all of which feature performers of stringed instruments.

A native of New York City, Mooke began her training on viola at an early age.

“I’ve always been drawn to the road less traveled,” she said, which is why she initially chose viola over the more popular violin.

As her affinity and fondness for the instrument grew, Mooke looked for ways to expand her repertoire beyond the traditional. As a teen, she stumbled upon an album by jazz violist Jean-Luc Ponty.

“I heard it, and it was like a light went on in my brain, and I knew there was this whole other dimension of music that I hadn’t been taught in school,” she said.

Electric violins and violas were rare back then, even more so than now, but Mooke tracked one down and began experimenting with styles employed by Ponty and groups like the Turtle Island String Quartet.

Since then, Mooke has made quite a name for herself in the music world, becoming a highly sought-after performer of both electric and acoustic stringed instruments. Her contributions to Broadway orchestras and other projects led to tours with several big-name artists such as Barbara Streisand and appearances on national television.

Mooke has also spearheaded an annual musical showcase called Thru the Walls that features composers and performers “whose work defies categorization.”

It was through that program that Mooke wound up meeting famed rocker David Bowie, who asked her to form a string quartet for his 2002 album. The same quartet has since performed benefit concerts at Carnegie Hall alongside artists like Moby, Rufus Wainwright, and Phish’s Trey Anastasio.

Despite performing on some of the world’s biggest stages, Mooke said she’s looking forward to the intimate setting of Elizabethtown’s Hand House.

“I like the idea of playing in all kinds of spaces,” she said. “I love having the chance to share my kind of music with an audience that has probably heard nothing like it before.”

“What I have found in the past is the more different the concert, the more people respond to and appreciate it,” said Piano by Nature founder Rose Chancler, who reconnected with Mooke after the two had performed together several years ago.

The concerts will feature mostly original works by Mooke, with perhaps a few of the pieces commissioned for her by other contemporary composers. Audience members can expect to see both acoustic and electric solos, some of which will employ pedal effects, playback loops, or recorded accompaniment.

“Sometimes it surprises me the response I get from people,” said Mooke, noting how the unique sound has been known to elicit anything from intrigue to epiphany. “That’s really the goal I have is World-famous electric violist Martha Mooke will perto have the connection to the audience.”

“We’re going to try to get as many kids from the different high schools to go and see her,” said Chancler. “Martha is a very serious musician and she is incredibly knowledgeable.”

Spaghetti dinner to benefit Westport church

PAUL SMITHS — An Andean shaman who has addressed audiences on multiple continents will appear at Paul Smith’s College Thursday, Sept. 23.

Don Alverto Taxo will discuss a 500-year-old prophecy in which the eagle – the industrialized north – and the condor – the people of South America – will fly in harmony. That time, he urges, is now.

Taxo, a native of Ecuador who has been honored as a master wisdom teacher, or iachak, by the Shamanic Council of South America, has been speaking for 15 years on topics as diverse as globalization and the application of ancient Andean practices to Western medicine.

In addition to his lectures at schools, universities, conferences and elsewhere, he has published three English-language books.

He says he shares ancient wisdom practices with people who seek happiness, balance and fulfillment to feel the sacredness of each moment and every place.

Taxo’s talk, “The Wisdom of the Condor,” will be held at 7 p.m. in the Adirondack Room of the Joan Weill Adirondack Library. It is free and open to the public.

His appearance has been coordinated by TRIO-Student Support Services; the School of Science, Liberal Arts, and Business; and the Office of Student Activities.

ELIZABETHTOWN — History and culture abound in Elizabethtown as the 22nd annual Field, Forest and Stream Day kicks off Saturday, Sept. 25, sponsored by the Arts Council for the Northern Adirondacks.

This family-friendly event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Adirondack History Center Museum and celebrates historic tra-

songwriter and storyteller Roy Hurd; and multi-generational country and bluegrass group A Fine Mix, featuring Max VanWie, Julie Robards, Larry Stone and Mick Changelo.

Returning again will be Beth Bidwell’s interactive presentation of “Adirondack Wild Things” with live hawks, owls, reptiles and amphibians of the Adirondacks.

Smokey Bear and the Forest Ranger will add to the educational aspect of forest stewardship.

New this year will be a vegetable contest where various produce will compete for the awards of Biggest, Best, and Most Grotesque.

There will be plenty of arts and craft experts on hand, selling and showing off some of the best nature-inspired media in the North Country. Special demonstrations will cover topics such as wool spinning, quilting, maple sugaring, guideboat making, carving, and the use of a portable sawmill.

As always, there will be face painting and other children’s activities sponsored by the Elizabethtown-Lewis Boy Scouts.

Also, there will be a variety of food vendors, the Adirondack Farmers’ Market and much more.

Throughout the day, raffle tickets will be sold for painting “Chapel Pond Sprial” the cover of ANCA’s annual 2010 arts directory created by Sally J. Smith. Tickets cost $1. All proceeds from the Cover Art drawing will go towards producing the 2011 Cover Art Show and related exhibits. At 3:30 p.m., the winner will be announced for the Cover Art prize.

The museum will be open free of charge during the festival for those interested in viewing exhibits on Adirondack life, ACNA’s Cover Art Show and silent auction, or enjoying panoramic views from the fire tower.

Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors 60 and older, $2 for students younger than 15, and family admission is $16.

Volunteers are still needed for the festival and may be eligible for free admission. There is a particular need for youth volunteers to assist with setting up and taking down the festival tents. Those interested may contact Athena Roth at 9628778.

Willsboro named ‘School of Distinction’

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com WILLSBORO — School is back in session, and students at Willsboro Central School were congratulated last week for helping earn a special award for their school.

Willsboro was one of several schools in the area recently named a “School of Distinction” by the scholastic organization College For Every Student.

CFES President Rick Dalton, and his wife, Karen Dalton, program director of CFES, visited the school for a Sept. 9 assembly where they presented school officials with a banner and plaque in front of the whole student body.

“I can tell you honestly that this is my favorite school in the country,” said Karen, noting how she and Rick travel to 20 different states to visit the 140 schools that participate in CFES. Among those, only 14 schools met the criteria to be named a School of Distinction. Willsboro was the first to receive the award.

“It happened because of the community,” said Rick, noting the efforts of volunteer mentors at Willsboro. “It does take a village to create an excellent school, and that has happened here.”

To receive the award, schools had to submit a portfolio documenting the completion of school-wide programs and assignments that promoted college awareness. Additionally, 90 percent of students participating in the CFES program had to show gains in attendance, grades, and participation in community service and mentoring.

“The purpose was to move CFES from a cohort of 100 scholars per school to every student in the school,” Rick said.

“It ensures that the program has high impact and cultivates a culture of college-going in the school.”

Four other North Country Schools were among those named: Keeseville Elementary School, Peru High School, Crown Point Central School, and Ticonderoga Middle School.

“I think it’s a real credit to this area,” said Rick.

the option to go to college. He noted how, of last years seniors, all applied and were accepted to college.

Through their participation in CFES, students at Willsboro in grades 6-11 have participated in college tours and student exchanges with Wadleigh Secondary School for the Performing Arts, located in the Harlem neighborhood of New York

City.

Rick credited Broadwell with implementing community mentoring, a program that was originally developed to target urban schools.

“Everything we do is because of the staff we have,” said Broadwell, praising his teachers’ enthusiasm and effort.

Obituaries Robert W. Ahrent Dec. 3, 1951 - Sept. 3, 2010 Robert W. Ahrent age 58 of Halfmoon passed away Friday, Sept. 3, 2010 at his home.

He was born Dec. 3, 1951 the son of Clarence and Leola Ahrent.

He served in the US Army and was a Vietnam War Veteran.

Survivors include his companion, Diana L. MacDonald; daughter, Tara Ahrent; sisters Betty (Jack) Cross, Mary, Carol and Joyce; brothers Ray, Clarence (Butch) and Michael.

He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Randy.

A graveside service was held Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010 at noon in the Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville.

Bruce S. Phillips Sept. 6, 2010 WESTPORT — Bruce S. Phillips of 6643 Main St., Westport, N.Y., died Sept. 6, 2010 with his children at his side. His remaining “original parts” just wore out. He was 83, but often said he “felt like he was 84.” He was under the wonderful care of High Peaks Hospice.

Bruce grew up in Westport and was in the first kindergarten class to enter the current school building. He earned his pilot's license at the Westport airport before he was old enough for a driver's license. He spent some time as a TV repair man and a logger before he joined the U.S. Air Force. He was a veteran of the Korean War during which time he was “stuck” in Texas as a flight instructor. He enjoyed a 31 year career as a pilot for American Airlines, retiring in 1987 as Captain with more than seven years of his life spent in the air. He liked to say that meant he was “only 76 years old in earth years.”

He served in a volunteer position as a safety inspector for the FAA. He was instrumental in locat-

ing the occasional downed aircraft for officials. His favorite thing was to “do for others.” He did not seek, nor want acclaim and usually worked anonymously donating time, services or money to organizations or individuals in need.

Bruce was predeceased by his parents Gerald and Hazel (Smith) Phillips; his sisters, Geraldine Phillips and Charlotte Spooner; and a wife from his first marriage, Mary Jane Columbe.

He is survived by his ex-wife, Bonnie Phillips Rosenthal of Rancho Mirage, Calif.; his children, Steven (Judy) Phillips of Peru, N.Y., Lane (Larry) Carroll of Westport, Casey (Patrick) Scanlon of Toketee Village, Ore., Bruce (Arleen) Phillps II of Westport, and Clinton (Robert Luther) Phillips of Austin, Tex.; his grandchildren, Jennifer (Mike) Madore, Lienne Carroll and her fiance, Jordan Lewis, Tanner and Cassidy Carroll; and one great granddaughter, Rachel Madore. He was beloved by each and every one of them.

Bruce loved the Adirondacks and Lake Champlain. He spent his last months soaking up the beauty of the place, the sounds of the woods, the birds, the silence. He especially enjoyed the many visits from his friends over the past several weeks and the opportunity to recall his life well lived with those he loved.

He did not want any services. He wished his ashes to be scattered over his favorite property. This will happen at the convenience of his family. Memorial donations may be made to High Peaks Hospice, PO Box 192, Port Henry, N.Y. 12974.

Arrangements are with W.M. Marvins Sons funeral home in Elizabethtown.

Harvest From page 1 “It’s really another opportunity to connect consumers with our local farms and farmers,” said Laurie Davis, Adirondack Harvest coordinator.

The week begins with a full-day event at one of the regions newest farms: Rivermede Farm at Snowslip, located on River Road just outside Lake Placid.

“It’s really special to us because they’re brand new members, and they’re really trying to make a splash in the agricultural scene here,” Davis said.

From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 18, guests are welcome at the new farm for a pancake breakfast, agricultural demonstrations, wagon rides by the Adirondack Equine Center, animal exhibits, live music, pumpkin painting, and, of course, locally-grown food.

A barbecue lunch will be served at the farm by the Golden Arrow Resort’s Generations Restaurant featuring local harvest from Rivermede, Snowslip, DaCy Meadow, Kilcoyne and Windy Mountain Farms. A$5 donation is suggested; free for children younger than 10.

In addition to Generations, several other Lake Placid restaurants will be featuring local foods on their menu that evening, including Down Hill Grill, Mirror Lake Inn, High Peaks Resort, and Liquids & Solids at the Handlebar.

Events continue throughout the following week with farm tours scheduled daily.

Sept. 19 features the Jubert-Castine Farms in West Chazy, known for their naturally-raised, grass-fed beef, from 2-4 p.m. All are welcome at no cost.

Tours will also be offered at Willsboro’s Ben Wever Farm Sept. 19, from 6-9 p.m., along with a pot-luck dinner featuring the food of local farms. Admission is free for Adirondack Harvest members or $25 for non-member families. Call 962-4810, ext. 404 for reservations.

Asgaard Farm in AuSable Forks will show off their farm-crafted goat cheeses and pastured eggs and chickens Sept. 20 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Stop by for a free farm tour and cheese tasting.

The Uihlein Maple Research Station will also be open for tours 1-4 p.m. Sept. 20. Visitors will tour the sugarbush where sap is collected as well as the buildings and equipment that transform raw sap into syrup and taste various grades of syrup. This tour is also free.

Sept. 21 features a 10 a.m. to noon tour of Fledging Crow Farm, a Keeseville CSA featuring organic vegetables. From 2-4 p.m., visit Stone House Vineyard in Sciota, the only farm winery licensed in Clinton County, where a wide variety of wines and grapevines are for sale. Both tours are free.

On Friday, Sept. 24, tour Essex Farm in Essex where Kristen and Mark Kimble run a unique, year-round, horse-powered CSA featuring a full range of vegetables, meat, dairy, eggs and more.

This farm tour will coincide with the weekly member share distribution, offering visitors a chance to see the full seasonal offerings.

Lions forward Katie Decker fired a shot across the front of the net mid-way through the second half that wound up with a lucky bounce.

“Our defender just unfortunately miskicked the ball and we had an own goal,” said Keene head coach Fred Hooper. “It’s an unfortunate way to lose the game.”

The Beavers otherwise held their own, limiting the tenacious Elizabethtown-Lewis offense to just six shots on goal.

“Keene played a really good defensive game,” said ELCS head coach Steve Denton.

“They kept us out of their third of the field and made it very hard for us to get shots.”

Equally as stalwart, however, was the Lions’ defense as Kylie Cassavaugh and company limited Keene to just five shots on goal.

Meanwhile, Decker, Emily Morris, and Lily Whalen accounted for most of the Lions’ shots as they capitalized on strong midfield play by Ashli Canabush.

“Our defensive line of Sadie Holbrook, Jessica Caner, Anna Kowanko, and Emma Gothner I thought were stellar,” said Hooper. “They had three all-stars back from last year on that front line, and I think we did a decent job keeping them in check.”

With 10 minutes left in the second half,

Caner nearly erased the lead, firing a shot from 13 yards out that bounced off the far post. Patricia Auer and Amanda Boyle each had two shots for Keene.

Kornecki to spend semester outdoors CANTON — Krystyna M. Kornecki of Keeseville is one of 12 St. Lawrence University students participating in the Adirondack Semester program of study this fall.

Following the model of study abroad in another culture, the Adirondack Semester offers students the opportunity to immerse themselves full-time in the natural world.

The program includes extended wilderness experiences, as well as courses which examine natural history, ecology, cultural history and ethics. It is based physically and educationally in a remote camp in the Adirondacks, without cars, television, or most electronic devices. Participating students must be willing to commit to an ethos of temporary removal from urban and campus amenities in order to study and reformulate the ethics of their relationships to society and nature.

Autumn’s approach

T

he arrival of cool, damp weather has provided a welcome change of pace for area sportsmen. In keeping with tradition, autumn is expected to be cold and blustery, but for too many years, we’ve been enjoying an extended summer.

We’ve gotten so used to it, that we’ve become spoiled.

When a spectacular Indian Summer day arrives, we tend to take it in stride. A warm autumn day is simply no longer a cause for celebration that it once was.

Late season fishing opportunities have started to pick up, with trout again active on the ponds while bass have been busy on the lakes.

In a few weeks, anglers will find landlocked salmon returning to Lake Champlain’s tributaries, as they move in to spawn.

I expect it will be a productive fall run, in terms of both quantity and quality as a result of the introduction of alewives in the Big Lake.

The timeframe signals a gradual period of seasonal transitions, as hunter and anglers mix and match their pursuits according to the weather, the species and the regulations.

It is also a key period of indecision, as a host of opportunities makes it increasingly difficult to decide on whether to pursue fish, fowl or game.

Sept. 18 is the opener for early bear season in the northern zone. Two days later, the ruffed grouse season begins Sept. 20.

Pheasant season kicks in with the youth weekend set for Sept.

25-6. The regular season opener is Oct. 1.

Throw into the mix the close of frog season on Sept. 30 and the beginning of archery season on Sept. 27, for hunters with last year’s tag, and it appears that the high holy days of autumn have finally arrived for sportsmen and women.

Within a few weeks, members of the buffalo plaid or camo clad crew will become the primary human inhabitants of the forest as tourists leave and kids return to school to begin their regular routines of life.

The smell of woodsmoke will again scent the forest air, as a familiar musty, pungency returns to the woods. The daylight hours will grow shorter, the weather will get cooler, the breeze stronger and as fallen leaves begin to cover the trails, the season will be in full swing.

I spoke with Ed Reed, a wildlife biologist with Region 5 DEC in Ray Brook, about prospects for the early season and he explained, “It’s been a really good year for black cherries, and it appears it will be for acorns and beechnuts, although we’ll have to wait and see if the beechnuts actually produce.”

“There is a good natural food supply and I’d say that the Adirondack bear population is pretty stable. However, it has been a light year for nuisance complaints, which usually indicates a slow early season.”

It stands to reason that with readily abundant natural food the animals won’t have to venture far in search of a meal. Less travel means less exposure and fewer opportunities for hunters Hunters should expect to find thick woods in full foliage on opening weekend, with seasonal temperatures ranging in the 60’s.

The American Sportsman — An endangered species?

Currently, the majority of Americans reside in the cities, we

As a result of this process, a majority of the nation’s population has become detached from the land. We have lost our rural roots. In many cases, our children lack for actual experience in the wild, they have become estranged from the outdoors.

This process has proven contrary to our instincts, our genetic resolve. Human beings long for the outdoors! It has been established that we have a physical and psychological need to spend time in natural surroundings. For over 10,000 years, our species lived on the open Savanna, were we evolved into the world’s apex predator.

The process of the ongoing, national “denaturalization” has been well established. It was documented in Richard Louv’s bestseller, Last Child in the Woods.

This gradual erosion of our national outdoor ethic was eventually ascribed in medical terminology. It has been called, “nature deficit disorder.”

In Michigan, a pediatric clinic now provides a prescription to combat childhood obesity. The prescribed treatment requires parents to get their children to spend more time outdoors. The ‘script,’ which can be filled at a local nature center, provides documentation of the frequency and duration of the children’s visits.

Louv claims that he had to ascribe a medical term to the affliction in order to get anybody to pay attention. Fortunately, his efforts have worked! Today the Child & Nature Network is a viable national and international organization that has spawned a resurgence of interest in outdoor play.

Local artists open studios for tours SARANAC LAKE — The last weekend of September traditionally has some of the best peak fall colors in the mountains and it’s also a chance to see some of the best original art in the Adirondacks.

Nearly 50 local artists at 40 locations will open their home studios and galleries to the public for the fourth annual Artist at Work Studio Tour Sept. 24-26.

This self-guided driving and walking tour features some of the areas most accomplished artists from the Tri-Lakes region.

Spend one of the days in Saranac Lake, where half of the studios are located. Take another day or two and tour Lake Placid, Wilmington, Jay, Vermontville, Onchiota, Rainbow Lake, Gabriels, Paul Smiths, and Tupper Lake.

The circular map route allows tour participants to visit all the studios and see some of the best mountain scenery at the same time.

Detailed directions to each artist’s studio are included in

the full color Artist at Work Studio Tour booklet, available at The Adirondack Artists’ Guild, the sponsor and official headquarters for the Studio Tour. The guild is located at 52 Main St. in Saranac Lake. The Studio Tour booklets are free and can be used year round as a resource to find local artwork.

Many of the artists are directly inspired by the Adirondack scenery that surrounds them and other explore diverse media and other subject matter. They produce paintings, photographs, prints, ceramics, fiber art, baskets, and jewelry.

Studio Tour hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24 and 25, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26.

Not all of the artists participate all three days, so check their listings for specific information.
