he Depot Theatre will finish out a stellar season this year with a captivating comedy called “Goodnight Desdemona, Good Morning Juliet,” in which a young literature student enters a magical world where she's able to meet characters from Shakespeare's plays. The play stars Carrie Treadwell, who, together with her friends from American Studio Theatre, just performed at Ballard Park in “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” for the Shakespeare Festival.

That show was absolutely amazing, and several people told me it was the best Shakespeare they've ever seen. If you missed it, too bad for you, but come see Carrie at the Depot. “Goodnight Desdemona, Good Morning Juliet” is directed by Christopher Jones and runs Sept. 10-19, with nameyour-price night on Monday, Sept. 13.

At the gracious urging of my esteemed fellow columnist, Rob Ivy of Essex, here's a shameless plug for my upcoming appearance at the Whallonsburg Grange, where I'll be reading from my most recent book, “A

Brief History of History,” Thursday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m. My idea for the book was to try to tell the story of how history has been thought about and written about in different ages, from ancient Greece right down to today. I also wanted to bring it alive for readers by telling the stories of real people.

When I got to the part of the book about the Italian Renaissance, I had a stroke of luck in finding a book of letters written by Nicolo Machiavelli, who's most famous for writing “The Prince,” a sort of instruction book for rulers on how to manipulate the public and strike fear into your enemies.

Machiavelli exhanged a whole bunch of letters with a man called Francesco Guicciardini, who just happens to be widely recognized as “the first modern historian” for the research methods that he used. The letters are full of dark humor and depict an elaborate practical joke the two friends played, but they also reveal a lot about how these two thinkers approached the idea of history itself. If you're interested in finding out how, I hope you'll come.

The Chesterfield Fish and Game Club has its Sportman’s Expo this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 11 and 12. This expo will feature information and equipment on outdoor activities. Gun and knife dealers will be present as well as archery, ATV and UTV dealers, wildlife art and woodcrafters. There should be something for everybody and it’s a great opportunity to check out the much-improved facility. Refreshments will be available throughout the weekend as well as a Sunday Chicken Barbeque from 11:30 until 4. Entry into the expo will be three dollars and the public is more than encouraged to attend from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. for both days.

I have been loving the wildlife that is in our area. My own home is right on Route 9 around many other houses but I still have seen deer, rabbits, chipmunks and many other animals through the windows of my house since moving here. It has been such a great experience – that is until my poor dog lost an encounter with a skunk at four in the morning this past weekend.

I definitely have an even greater respect for nature as our whole house has been thrown into such a state over this brief meeting. I am looking forward to the day my nose smells something other than a burning tire smell. My poor dog, who is a very spoiled house dog, has been relegated to the garage temporarily and probably won’t look me in the face for even longer than the smell dissipation. Well, with the joys of country living comes the trials as well, I guess. Have a great odor-free week, everybody!

he news from town is rather slim this week, although of course amusing and newsworthy events are occurring all the time. People happily tell me about spectacular car crashes and hilarious practical jokes, but always on the condition they stay out of the paper. This week, the birds are quiet, the dragonflies are scarce, and thus you will have to read about my not-too-graceful parking job at the Whallonsburg Grange and how I stopped traffic in Lake Placid.

I arrived at the Grange a couple of Sundays ago to attend the celebration and in front of a number of onlookers attempted a U-turn in a confined space on Route 22. I cut too close to the edge of the road and dropped the right front tire into a deep ditch — a very deep ditch — disguised by a recent mowing that hid its contours. The left rear tire came off the ground, and the car and I looked pretty silly.

The crowd drew closer to see and took a fair amount of pleasure at my discomfort. There was gawking, outright laughter, and a few

gratuitously offered opinions on my driving skills. Luckily, a fine young gentleman with a Ford pickup pulled me out of the ditch, allowing me to regain some of my dignity and enjoy the rest of the rainy afternoon.

Earlier this summer, I was in downtown Lake Placid, on a busy morning when the sidewalks were crowded and the street a steady stream of cars. I was going to the bookstore, and noticed a man, clearly a visitor, trying to get across the street. He was standing in a marked cross walk, obviously intending to cross, and yet the cars barreled right past him. He was frustrated, and I took it upon myself to help him out. I’m not a native New Yorker, but I’ve acquired some of the brashness we’re known for, so in my best traffic cop imitation, I stepped off the curb and stopped one lane and then the other. The man made his way across while the car drivers glared. I gave everyone a big smile and waved them all on.

abor Day sure does mark a big change for us here in the community. Fall events very quickly pop up, like this past Sunday afternoon when a good size “Right to Life” group turned out to share their beliefs. They lined both sides of the road from the bridge to the monument area. Once again, we need to be alert that school starts for children Wednesday, Sept. 7, so watch for those stopped school buses and note that the speed limit on the area in front of the school is posted at 35.

The annual School Gala will be held Tuesday, Sept. 14, starting at 5:30. The public and especially parents and family are urged to attend and show support to the children who attend this school. Sept. 14th is also Primary Day, and your vote is most important. The voting will be held in the Visitor ’s Center from 12-9 p.m. A reminder that you can only vote your registered party line at primary elections. So come vote, and then drop in to the School Gala.

A couple more families have welcomed new additions, including grandparents Ann and Lauren Choate, who welcomed a grandson, Dominic Choate, born Aug. 27 to Alessandra and Daniel Choate in Florida.

They are richly blessed with grandchildren, but I believe this is the first grandson to carry on the Choate name. Jim and Robyn Ashline welcomed a daughter, Lillian, on Aug. 27. Congratulations to both families.

The Rev. Milton Dudley from Keene Valley provided a very moving Blessing of the Animals for the second year in a row. The Blessing is the finale of a Pet Parade and the announcement of prizewinners for dogs who have won various contests.

Cocoa We would like to send a special thank you to all of the volunteers and donors who helped make this a success: Deb Timon and her children, who offered some truly artistic face painting, Sharon Bishop and her talented dancing dog troupe from Saranac Lake, and Sidney Ward from Jay whose beautiful handmade cutting boards were again a hit. He very generously donated his proceeds from the many he sold. The sound system was again provided by Fritz Sabbow of Keene Valley; wonderful music by the Lonesome Travelers, Mitch and Vi Terry, of Jay kept visitors' feet tapping. The pets at the shelter benefit greatly from this Dog Days of Summer event sponsored by the Adirondack Farmers' Market Cooperative, without whom we could not make this happen.

Our featured pet this week is Cocoa, a Chocolate Laborador Retriever-Mix whose story is all too familiar. He was found wandering the streets without any indication of an owner or home. Cocoa is a sweetheart of a dog who would love to spend time in a home where he can get plenty of exercise strolling around the neighborhood and playing in the yard. He enjoys his walks and is very obedient. Cocoa is calm and polite with other dogs and he really having his thick, bushy coat be petted and touched. Cocoa is a great dog for any family who enjoys to spend time in the great outdoors.

The train and bathing scenes were well worth the price of the show. The scheme of the illustrated songs was ingenious, bet we failed to appreciate the vocal rendering thereof. The clearest criticism we remember hearing was by one of our scholarly high school boys, when he said in his easy lisping speech, “I think that singing was just excruciating, it was terrible.” We don’t remember of ever hearing anyone, who could so thoroughly torment the eight notes, as did the superb vocalist last Saturday night. I believe had a tramp listened to his dreams as pictured in vocal strains by Mr. Hatch, he would have quit his vocation, and tackled the first wood pile he met, and I doubt if the iron bound bucket would have stood it without bursting, had it been present and could have heard some of the high tones, way up in G. We were present at the entertainment and heard the singing, and have read the above criticism but will not state which we consider worst, the criticism or the singing.

TICONDEROGA—Delford Holloway, the owner of the yacht Winona, whose boiler burst last week while off Fort Ticonderoga with a pleasure party aboard, was so badly injured that his death is expected. Mr. Holloway was blown out of the yacht and hurled 100 feet across the lake. Besides severe burns, he sustained internal injuries and was almost

Haselton had a narrow escape from death in an automobile crash Tuesday afternoon about 3 o’clock when the car in which she was riding with her sister, Miss Ella Crowley, was crashed into by a car traveling in the opposite direction. The accident occurred in the vicinity of A. H. Kilborn’s corners at Upper Jay. The Misses Crowley were riding in a car owned and operated by Miss Ella Crowley, and their car was struck with such force that the injured woman’s head was driven through the windshield causing a cut on the neck which exposed the jugular vein, and inflicting a deep wound across the cheek on the same side of the face. Dr. Gregory Culver of Au Sable Forks was summoned to care for the injured lady . . .

ELIZABETHTOWN—An Essex county supreme court jury will be called on to decide the right of Marion L. Thomas of Crown Point to retain his post as chairman-treasurer of that county’s Democratic committee. Seeking to have him legally deposed, Joseph T. Albert of Elizabethtown and Thomas Batten of Lake Placid have filed a suit contending that Thomas’ election to the post in April, 1936 is invalid, on the grounds that he “was not then nor has been since a member of the county committee.” At a meeting by petition, Roy Lockwood of Ticonderoga was named county chairman in November. At a later meeting, the committeemen adopted a resolution declaring the office vacant . . .

If you have the talent, you play, and if you do not, you don’t. You might get into an Ivy League school on a legacy admission because your parents went there before you, but you won’t play college or professional sports on that basis. Having a politician call the coach to put you in the game won’t work, and knowing the right people won’t help either. Athletes that play on the professional level have earned their right to play.

As Americans, I think we admire people that work really hard and have earned their position. Professional athletes are far from perfect, in that regard, they are just like us. Remember all kids count.

any people identify heavily with their sports teams. Locally, the presence of the Red Sox Nation and its citizens are ubiquitous. Red Sox t-shirts, hats and bumper stickers are everywhere. We like sports because anything can happen and often does.

Man of War is considered by many to be the greatest race horse of all time. He was undefeated during his career except for a 100-to-1 horse that handed him his one and only defeat. The horses name was Upset, and that word now describes improbable outcomes in sports to this day.

Who could forget the Miracle on Ice in Lake Placid? The Russians were the greatest hockey team in the world and dominated everyone. The American team featured a group of college players that came in ranked 7 out of 11 teams. “Do you believe in miracles?” The Miracle Mets and the NY Jets with “Broadway Joe” at quarterback are just two of the many sports miracles that demonstrate how compelling and attractive the story of the underdog is.

We mortals take satisfaction when the great gods of sports lose to lesser opponents. We forgive athletes that struggle with drug addiction or alcohol abuse, but don’t cheat – that we cannot give.

Questioning cost of renovations To the editor: What a great way to use the old Willsboro school: assisted living, turning that building into a 24/7 place for those (some 62 units) needing some help with their daily lives. Curious, though: the guaranteed loan from USDA Rural Development for $6 million, presumed to be about 80 percent of the total cost. What was the cost of the Willsboro Central School (the new school), and how does that compare with the complete renovation of the old school for the proposed project? If my memory serves me, the reason for the new school was that renovations to the old one would be too costly, impractical. Now I wonder if that was really so. I pity the Willsboro school district taxpayers if they were indeed sold a bill of goods; I hope not.

We’ve put together a new package to make it more affordable.

The weekend will consist of Saturday travel on a luxury motor coach to the American Museum of Natural History or the Metropolitan Museum of Art; your choice. We plan on being to the Hilton Hotel in time for a buffet dinner in our private meeting room. Sunday morning we’ll have a breakfast buffet in our private meeting room before going into the city. ELIZABETHTOWN — A change in leadership is coming to the Elizabethtown Social Center.

The center ’s Board of Directors has announced the hire of Arin Burdo as the newest director of the center. She will officially start Oct. 1.

Burdo, 36, is an Elizabethtown native and grew up using the Social Center on a regular basis.

“I’ve been using the Social Center ’s services almost since I could walk,” she said, noting how she participated in preschool playgroups there as a toddler. “And, of course, I hung out at the center as a teen.”

After graduating high school, Burdo attended the University of Montana where she earned a bachelor ’s degree in Political Science. She returned to the area seeking a career in nonprofit administration.

She has worked as a human resources coordinator for Mountain Lake Services and served as both a volunteer and paid employee of various nonprofits in the region, such as the North Country Women’s Center.

Currently, Burdo lives in Lewis with her husband, Steve, and their four children, Paul, 17; Abigail, 14; Annalise, 7; and Benjamin, 4.

Burdo said with her youngest child getting ready to attend school, the timing was right to get back into the workforce.

“I looked at [the job] as an opportunity to work on a part-time basis,” she said.

She originally withdrew her application when the board informed her they were looking for a full-time employee.

The board interviewed others for the position, but did not find a candidate who was both qualified and willing to fulfill the job requirements. Ultimately, they decided to offer the position as part-time to Burdo.

Ken Fenimore, the current director, said the board had been looking for a new director since March.

“When I was originally hired, it was supposed to be on a temporary basis,” said Fenimore. “I was retired before coming on, and

I would like to get back to that.”

Fenimore said he will be staying on in limited capacity as a “director emeritus,” to assist Burdo in transitioning into the position.

Burdo, who happens to be Fenimore’s daughter, said people would be wrong to assume her father ’s ties to the job were the main reason she was hired.

“I hope that people will realize that I’m qualified for this position,” she said. “I think my background is such that I’m very suited for the position.”

In addition to raising her own children, Burdo has been a leader of youth programs at her church in Lewis. She said she’s looking forward to maintaining the Social Center as a safe and structured place for youth to gather.

“The board really wants to start offering more programs and more services to the community,” said Burdo. “That’s something I’m really excited about.”

Burdo is already getting involved by helping to organize an ultimate frisbee tournament Sept. 25.

“I hope to look for more opportunities like that for fitness that families can do together,” she said.

Classes teach instrument making

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com KEENE VALLEY — A seasonal resident of the Adirondacks is offering to share her unique expertise with fellow music enthusiasts.

Charlotte Poletti, founder and president of the American Pipers’ Guild, will offer classes on making a bamboo pipe each Wednesday and Friday, 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Keene Valley Congregational Church beginning Sept. 15.

Bamboo pipes are recorder-like wind instruments. Their history stems from a London schoolhouse in the 1920s where a teacher by the name of Margaret James turned some of her old bamboo curtain rods into accurately-tuned instruments her students could use for playing music.

The instruments became an instant hit with both the students and professional musicians of the period, leading to the creation of pipers’ guilds throughout Europe that carved and decorated their pipes by hand.

“They really are a nice quality instrument,” said Poletti, who first learned of the instruments while living in Europe and singing in choral groups there.

“It amazed me how the most qualified people would get together with their pipes and share their music.”

Early on, the European pipers’ guilds established a tradition that the pipes be made only by their players and never sold. To get her own pipe, Poletti joined one of the guilds.

“You’re getting people together to have this very spiritual experience of making their own instrument and sharing music,” she said, noting how musicians of all abilities would participate.

Poletti enjoyed the experience so much, she decided to become trained in teaching others to make them. After years of study and practice, she became the first Ameri-

can to attain Master status in the making and playing of bamboo pipes.

Since then, she has helped students ages seven to 70 make more than 1,500 pipes and has been a guest teacher for pipers’ guilds in Austria, Holland, France, Switzerland, and other countries.

She also established her own pipe ensembles near Boston and Hartford, Conn., where she and her husband have their Winter home.

Now she wants to bring the same experience to her Adirondack neighbors.

“It takes a certain commitment,” she said, noting how at least 10 hours go in to making each pipe. “You have to be really drawn to the idea of making your own musical instrument.”

The cost of the class varies from $50 to $60 based on the size of the pipe participants wish to create; they range from soprano, the smallest, to bass, the largest. The admission covers the cost of materials.

“What I do discourage is people who take it as a craft experience,” Poletti added.

“The craft is an important part of it, but if you don’t play it, you’re missing an important part of it.”

NOTICE OF 2010 LAKE CHAMPLAIN SEA LAMPREY CONTROL TREATMENT SCHEDULE AND TEMPORARY WATER USE ADVISORIES The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announces that sea lamprey control treatments will continue this September in four tributaries of Lake Champlain.

The sea lamprey is a parasitic fish that has seriously damaged the trout and salmon fishery in the lake. Crews will apply TFM to four streams according to the following tentative schedule: Date Stream September 14 Putnam Creek September 18 Little Ausable September 22 Ausable River Temporary water use advisories will be in effect in specific areas following each treatment. The purpose of the advisories, developed by the Department of Health, is to minimize exposure to the sea lamprey treatment compound.

The Department of Health recommends that river water, which may contain treatment concentrations of TFM, should not be used for drinking, swimming, fishing, irrigating, or livestock watering until the control chemical dissipates. Nearby lake water, which may contain dilute concentrations of TFM, should not be used for drinking or livestock watering until the advisory is lifted.

The treatment and water use advisories will have no effect on most people in the Champlain Basin and no municipal water supplies will be affected. An extensive series of mailings has already been initiated by department staff to contact landowners and renters who may be affected by the treatments. Local broadcast media will announce when advisories begin and end. There is also a toll free number (800-638-5432) the public may call from any location in NY or Vermont for progress reports and updates on treatments and water use advisories.

Golf tourney raises thousands for ALS research

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com PORT KENT — Hundreds gathered at Harmony Golf Club recently for a fundraising event aimed at tackling a devastating disease that’s affected dozens of local families.

The ALS Research Golf Tournament was held Aug. 28, drawing a capacity 40, four-person teams and even more spectators.

The event raised more than $30,000 to support research of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also called Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

“We’ve had an overwhelming response from the community,” said event coorganizer Darlene Long.

“They just want to fight back.”

ALS is a degenerative disease that attacks nerve cells, causing weakness and paralysis of voluntary muscles. In the vast majority of cases, it is terminal with an average lifespan of two to five years following diagnosis.

Options for effective treatment are very limited, but with additional research, friends and family of local ALS patients are hoping to change that.

“There have been a lot of people that have been impacted by the disease,” said Long, whose husband, Roger, was diagnosed last year and is one of five area residents currently battling ALS. In the North Country alone, 25 people have had their lives claimed by the disease in the past 30 years.

Many in attendance were their family and friends, who have had to deal with the effects of ALS in their own way.

“I was shocked at how many people were there,” said Port Kent resident Anne Porter, whose mother, June Jones, died from ALS in 1981. “There was just so much support; it was amazing.”

Sue LaMoy of Peru said attending the tournament brought a little more closure for the death of her husband, Robert, who died from ALS in 2006.

“I did the ALS walk in Vermont in 2007,” said LaMoy,

“and this was so much more meaningful.”

In addition to the golf tournament, the event included live and silent auctions featuring items donated by a wide variety of local businesses.

“We’re just so pleased with the way things turned out,” said Long, ”and it’s just because of everyone’s efforts and the whole community.”

Many who participated in the event are looking forward to making it an annual tradition. Kathy Nixon is the mother of John Nixon, who died in 2007 after battling ALS. “I hope we can continue to do this every year,” said Nixon, “just continue to research and find a cure.”

WHALLONSBURG — The Adirondack Center for Writing presents author and historian Colin Wells in their annual Reading Series. The series hosts writers and poets from the North Country at local venues to share their recent work.

Wells’ talk is titled “Potty Humor and History: The Strange Friendship of Nicolo Machiavelli and Francesco Guicciardini” and will explore Nicolo Machiavelli’s friendship with the “first modern historian.” He will speak Sept. 16, 7 p.m. at The Whallonsburg Grange Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Colin Wells has been interested in history since his undergraduate days at UCLA, and has published widely, from “Sailing from Byzantium: How a Lost Empire Changed the World,” to “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Understanding Saudi Arabia.” His most recent book is called “A Brief History of History: Great Historians and the Epic Quest to Explain the Past.”

In addition to works of popular history, Wells has published a children’s mystery titled “Stick Like Glue” and is working on a new book called “The Invention of God: The Origins of Faith in the Rise of Reason.” He lives with his two Samoyeds and a crew of cats in Westport, where he writes for the local paper.

The Reading Series will also feature poet Jay Rogoff Sept. 21 at the Saratoga Arts Center.

Obituaries Byron L. Ellsworth March 27, 1919 - Sept. 3, 2010 Princeton, ME & Willsboro, NY – Byron Lee Ellsworth, 91, passed away Friday, September 3, 2010, at Calais Regional Hospital with his loving wife and son by his side.

Byron was born in Willsboro, NY on March 27, 1919, son of the late Lee and Lillian Ellsworth. After graduating from Willsboro High School he started his career at New York & Pennsylvania Co. Byron was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corps., serving his country during WWII. After the war he returned home and continued his employment with New York & Pennsylvania Co which was purchased and closed by Georgia Pacific in 1966. At that time he was transferred to Baileyville, ME, where he worked for Georgia Pacific until his retirement in 1981.

Byron enjoyed hunting, fishing and reading non-fiction books.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Hazel Ellsworth. Surviving are his wife Agnes (Facteau) Ellsworth, whom he married on November 4, 1944 in Port Henry, NY; and his two

Gregory P. Otis Aug. 18, 1930 - May 28, 2010 NORTH PORT, Fla. — Gregory P. Otis, 79, formerly of Elizabethtown, passed away May 28, 2010 in North Port, Fla. He was born Aug. 18, 1930 in Elizabethtown to Gordon and Georgiana (Gregory) Otis. He was a Korean Conflict Air Force veteran. He was a Civil Engineer for the State of New York.

Gregory was predeceased by his wife, Audrey (2004), and two brothers, Walter and Gordon. He is survived by his daughters, Holly Albino of Port Charlotte, Fla., Melissa Dixon of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and Kelli Otis of Oswego, N.Y.; a sister, Sandra Levitt of Lake Placid, N.Y.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be held on Sept. 11, 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Church in Elizabethtown, followed by a remembrance gathering at the Otis family farm on Route 9.

Robert W. Ahrent Dec. 3, 1951 - Sept. 3, 2010 Robert W. Ahrent age 58 of Halfmoon passed away on Friday, September 3, 2010 at his home.

He was born on December 3, 1951 the son of Clarence and Leola Ahrent.

He served in the US Army and was a Vietnam War Veteran.

Survivors include his companion, Diana L. MacDonald, daughter Tara Ahrent, sister Betty (Jack) Coryy, Mary, Carol and Joyce.

Brothers Ray, Clarence (Butch) and Micheal.

He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Randy.

A graveside service was held on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at noon in the Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville.

Local farmers note growing demand

As the demand for local food grows, an increasing number of local farms are offering their goods as a CSA. “For the farmer, a CSA is a great way to sell their product,” said Anita Deming, executive director of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Essex

CSA, short for Community Supported Agriculture, is a system of farming and food distribution where producers and consumers share the risk of production.

In most CSA models, members agree to buy “shares” at a certain up-front cost in the early spring. In exchange, they receive weekly portions of fresh produce during the growing season. The size of the portions and variety of produce is based on what the farmer is able to grow.

“The buyer gets a good deal,” said Deming, noting how the food ends up being less expensive than it would be at a farmer’s market.

“Rather than being raised for shipping, it’s raised for flavor,” Deming added. “You can also make input to the farmer about what you want them to grow.”

Adam Hainer owns and operates Juniper Hill Farm in Wadhams, one of several farms in the area that have switched to CSA as their main form of operation.

Hainer said receiving payment in early spring – normally the time he purchases seed – saves him from having to seek annual production loans like many other farmers.

More importantly, Hainer can grow his crops with the advance knowledge that someone wants to consume them.

“It’s nice to look at growing things if people really care about the end result,” he said.

Hainer grows 30 varieties of organic vegetables and fruits on Juniper Hill’s 10 acres, tailoring pro-

duction to the demands of CSA members.

This year was Juniper Hill’s third year in production and second year as a CSA. Their CSA membership started with 15 and has since doubled, allowing for expanded production.

“I think it’s becoming more and more common in our country as a whole,” said Hainer, noting increased desire by many people to have a better connection to the places their food originates.

While some CSAs make weekly deliveries to their members, Hainer encourages people to come pick up their weekly share at Juniper Hill.

“I know some people may look at it as an inconvenience to come out to the farm every Friday, but then they get a better connection to where their food comes from,” he said. “They see the day we plant them and they see the day we’re picking them.”

Hainer admits his CSA members may pay an average of 20 to 30 percent more for their produce than they would at a grocery store, but said there’s just no comparison when it comes to quality and taste.

“I personally don’t think $23 a week for a CSA is too much when plenty of people spend that much on bottled water,” he said. “I can understand if you don’t want fresh vegetables, but don’t tell me it’s because it’s too expensive.”

“We’re in this to feed people, not to get rich,” Hainer added. “If people come to talk to us about what they need to be a part of it and what they can afford, we can try to work with them.”

CSAs in the Adirondacks are also becoming

more viable due to the implementation of some new technology.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has begun to offer grants and low-interest loans to farmers to help buy high tunnels, a kind of low-cost, unheated greenhouse that allows farmers to extend the growing season of several different crops and keep them better protected from insects, disease, and damaging weather.

At Juniper Hill Farm, Hainer has put an innovative twist on his high tunnels, mounting them on tracks so they can be easily moved to cover rotating crops.

“They’re worth every penny,” Hainer said, noting how it’s his goal to eventually provide produce to his CSA members year-round.

Local farms have also been getting a boost from Adirondack Harvest, a CCE-sponsored program that helps farmers market their goods. The program also offers training to farmers so they can do their own marketing with brochures and other promotional materials.

“The one thing we try to do is be the Web presence for these farmers,” said Deming.

As part of the residency, the Company will be offering special dance classes 10 a.m. noon, Monday through Friday, Sept. 7-24 in the LPCA Dance Studio. Child Seat Safety Check slated in Tupper Lake TUPPER LAKE — New York State Police Troop B, together with the Tupper Lake Village Police Department, Child Care Coordinating Council, and Family Matters Resource Center, will host a Child Seat Safety Check Wednesday, Sept. 15, 4-7 p.m. in the Holy Ghost Academy parking lot.

Any adult who is responsible for providing transportation to children are encouraged to attend. Technicians will be on hand to inspect seats, assist with installations, provide information and answer questions regarding child seat safety. For more information, contact Family Matters at 359-8167.

if people bring in historical objects from home. The more the merrier. Piece by piece, we’ll get an interesting and very personal snapshot of Saranac Lake history.”

Flynn said Adirondack Artifact Night is set up differently from the popular PBS program “Antiques Roadshow,” in which experts appoint monetary value to antiques that guests bring in from home.

“We will not be identifying or appraising objects,” Flynn said. “We expect that people will bring historical artifacts, photos and paintings to the library and share their stories with the rest of the audience. In this case, the guests are the experts.”

CLINTONVILLE — Ben Weightman got the job done in the air and on the ground, leading Saranac to a 27-20 win against AuSable Valley in Northern Football Conference action Sept. 3.

The Chiefs’ quarterback threw 11-of-28 for 289 yards and led his team with 59 rushing yards.

“He’s something else,” said AuSable Valley head coach Heith Ford said of Weightman. “I have to give him credit.”

Weightman demonstrated excellent scrambling ability as he opened the scoring midway through the first quarter, dodging three would-be tacklers before stretching into the end zone.

AuSable Valley answered quickly however when, on the second play of the ensuing drive, quarterback Austin House found Hank Whisher for a 69-yard touchdown pass.

On the very next play from scrimmage, Weightman tossed one to Dylan Everleth, who reversed field and outran defenders 68 yards to paydirt.

Everleth caught another Weightman pass in the end zone late in the second quarter, giving the Chiefs a 21-7 halftime lead. He would finish with nine receptions for 151 yards.

Saranac seemed to be its own worst enemy on offense, however, accumulating about a dozen penalties.

“It's very disappointing to see this group of guys get that many flags, which probably cost us several touchdowns in the game,” said Saranac head coach Mark Burrell.

AuSable Valley had its share of penalties, too, however, including a few instances where too many players lined up on defense.

“The penalties did hurt us, especially the substitution penalties,” said Ford. “That’s just players learning where they fit as they find their way into the rotation.”

The Patriots came out strong in the second half when a 51-yard scamper by running back John Sikandar set up a 5-yard rushing touchdown by House. Sikander led AuSable Valley with 135 yards on 12 carries while House had 108 rushing yards on 10 carries.

“We found a lot of depth we didn’t know we had tonight,” said Ford, noting how surprise performances from Kyle Prinsen and Hank Whisher on defense and Jordan Bouyea on offense helped keep the Patriots in the game. “We didn’t give up, and we fought right to the end.”

Following another rushing touchdown by Weightman, the Patriots drove all the way to Saranac’s 11-yard line where they gave up a costly fumble.

AuSable Valley got the ball back in the fourth, however, when James Crowningsheild recovered a Weightman fumble, leading to a quarterback sneak by House that turned into 59-yard rushing touchdown and cut the lead to 27-20.

September 11,2010 Weightman threw an interception late in the fourth quarter that gave the Patriots an opportunity to tie.

They drove to the 24, where, on a fourth-andnine with less than a minute to play, House threw a pass down the middle of the field that was tipped by the reciever and picked-off by Weightman on the goal line.

“I think they had a chance to make the play.

The receiver was certainly in position,” said Burrell.

“Overall, our defense didn't play well tonight. For us to give up 20 points and make the mistakes we did and come away with the victory, we're very fortunate.”

Lions have new look ELIZABETHTOWN — With a new coach and only four starters returning from last year ’s 12-3-2 team, the Elizabethtown-Lewis boys soccer team is relying on the skill of their younger players.

New coach Smitty Marvin will be at the helm, replacing Paul Beuhler and his successful record. Seniors Zack Denton, Timmy LaRock and Cortland Mowery, and junior Hunter Mowery are the only returning starters.

However, the Lions have a deep roster of skilled underclassmen. Alex Andrade, Brody Hooper, Nathan Allott, and Jeremy Rushby all return with varsity experience. They are joined

by senior Paul Burdo; juniors Spencer Crowningshield, Tyler White and Patrick Phillips; and sophomores Julius Burres, Josh Williams, Charlie Huttig, Louis Scaglione and Hunter Farrell.

Four new ninth graders are expected to have a big impact this year, including Austin Morris, Justin LaPier, Conner Apthorp, and Geeg Dedam.

“We have 21 players on this year’s team with only three seniors, so I will be looking to a lot of the underclassment to be stepping up in several different roles,” said Marvin. “We hope to have an excellent season with a difficult schedule against teams like Willsboro and Chazy.”

ELCS girls young but tested ELIZABETHTOWN — With just three seniors on the team, the girls of ElizabethtownLewis may be fairly young, but many of them bring plenty of experience to the pitch.

Among those returning are seniors Nicole Podmore and Jessyka McGinn. Defenders Kylie Cassavaugh, a sophomore, and Clare Harwood, a junior, each have two previous years of varsity experience, as does sophomore forward Emily Morris.

Also returning are juniors Kristy Napper and Kaitlyn Coats; sophomores Sierra Wimett, Kaylee Cross, and Jennifer McGinn; and freshmen Katie Decker and Lily Whalen.

Joining the team this year are senior Ashli Canabush; sophomores Crystal Grady and Cheyenne Sousie; and freshman Shonna Brooks.

Beavers return solid core KEENE VALLEY — Last year was a tough year for Keene’s boys soccer team as the young squad struggled to a 4-7-1 record.

This year, however, many of their players return with added experience and skill.

Seven starters return from the 2009 team including goalkeeper James Bell, defenders Brett Guerin, Dylan Boyle and Sam Earl, midfielders Jamie Kaltenbach and Jack Van Wie, and standout forward Austin Holbrook. Jeffery Bruha and Sam Balzac also return to bolster the midfield.

Freshman Gabe Warner, a newcomer, will start on the front line, and eighth grader Colton Verner has shown a lot of promise as a defender.

Seniors Mike Harris and Luke Paduzi will provide much-needed depth on offense.

Freshman Max Sturgis and eighth grader Brandon Dumas will also rotate in as needed.

“We are very young at many positions,” said head coach Charlie Pratt. “Our goal is to finish .500 and go to sectionals.”

Youth step up for Keene KEENE VALLEY — The Keene girls soccer team will rely on their younger players to fill the gap left by those who graduated.

“This is somewhat of a rebuilding year,” said head coach Fred Hooper.

The Beavers lost four key seniors to graduation, including offensive dynamo Emma Nye and midfielder Taylor McCabe. The loss of Louisa and Michelle Sardella left some big shoes to fill on defense.

Juniors Emma Gothner and Brittany Guerin, together with sophomores Sadie Holbrook and Hannah McCabe return to an-

Meanwhile, junior Amanda Boyle will lead a young front line bolstered by Chrissy Fabiano and Patricia Auer.

Newcomer Tucker Geiger, a freshman, will start as goalkeeper. Classmates Kari LeClair and Sarah Kaltenback are sure to see plenty of time on the field as well.

Westport boys take to the field WESTPORT — A lot of new faces will take to the field for Westport’s boys soccer team.

The team lost several key players to graduation including three-time all-star Nathan Gay. Midfielder Bo McKinley transferred for his senior year, and fellow classmate Kevin Russell is expected to be out with injury for the whole season.

What’s left are just four returning starters from last year. All-star midfielder Liam Davis returns along with sweeper David Quaglietta as the lone seniors on the team.

Junior Cooper Sayward at midfield and sophomore Jack Newberry at forward both saw plenty of action last year. Jonathan Ma-

goon also returns, along with Ethan Markwica, who will start in the net.

Joining the team this year are John Doyle, Ryan Davis, Robert King, James Morrisette, Jordan Spadafora, Jesse Misarski and Gabe Schrauf. They will all be relied upon heavily for playing time.

“We are a young team with seven first year players, six of which are freshman, so this could be considered a rebuilding year,” said head coach Mike Davis. “Our goals for the season are to develop our individual skill sets, enhance our team play, and have fun.”

Lady Eagles ready to fly WESTPORT — A solid core of returning players combined with promising new talent will make Westport a competitive force in MVAC girls soccer this season.

The team lost five players to graduation, but returns 12 players from last year ’s team.

Senior Molly Rascoe returns to start as goalkeeper after taking a year off for medical reasons. Seniors Nancy Armitage and Aisleigh Frum, together with junior Emily French, will anchor the defense.

The midfield also looks strong, led by senior Christina Sherman. Junior Karlee McGee,

sophomore Allison Sherman and freshman Brendee Russell are also proven players.

On the front line, Westport will boast plenty of speed with Delaney Sears, Elizabeth Peasley, Alexa Mitchell, and Mallory Sudduth.

“We have lots of returning players and great enthusiasm,” said head coach Elizabeth Lee, who takes over for Brad Rascoe.

Joining the team this year are sophomores Rachel Abrahamsen, Ashley Quaglietta and Charlotte Staats, and freshman Sarah Looby.

Warriors hope to gain ground WILLSBORO — The Warriors return with many key players from last year ’s 11-4-2 team and plenty of younger talent to help them compete anywhere in the MVAC. First-team all-star forwards Clay Sherman and Alex Hamel combined for 23 goals and 18 assists last year and return along with senior forward Patrick Wells to provide a powerful three-pronged attack to Willsboro’s offense.

Defenders Clayton Cross, Cody Sayward, Jeffrey Bigelow and Nick Ball also return along with midfielders Dakota Sayward and

Brandon Bertrand. They will be joined in the starting lineup by sweeper Brandon Porter.

Junior Mike Smith joins the team this year along with several promising sophomores: Erik Manning, Dakota Latford, Sam Politi, Walker Lobdell, Tyler Bridge, and Lee Sloper.

“Our goal is to be competitive within our division and within the league,” said head coach Andy Lee. “If we can continue to grow and work together as a team, we should have another successful season.”

Willsboro girls rely on experience WILLSBORO — Despite some big losses to graduation, the Willsboro girls soccer team will look to an experienced group of returning players to replicate last year ’s successful season.

“We expect to be competitive, although we have lost many key players,” said head coach Laura Bridge.

The Warriors lost five players to graduation, including all-star goalie Stevie Burrows, midfield anchor Jade Sayward, defender Krystal Porter, and scoring leaders Marion James and Sierra Bruno.

Several midfielders and defenders return with varsity experience, however, including

Serene Holland, Emily Sayward, and Hannah Bruno. Returning players Megan Jaquish, Courtney Blanchard, and Kyli Swires will lead the charge on offense along with newcomer Renee Marcotte. Senior Morgan Jaquish joins the team and will start in the net.

“Our team is very cohesive, which is always a strength,” Bridge added.

Senior Erika Oliver returns and will provide added depth. Rouding out the roster are a talented group of sophomores and freshmen including Karin Buck, Morgan Murphy, Amanda Mahoney, Alyson Arnold, Tiffani Tromblee, and Kathryn Belzile.

AuSable Valley boys shoot for the goal CLINTONVILLE — The AuSable Valley boys soccer team is hoping hard work can mold their young talent into a formidable force in the CVAC. The Patriots return several players from last year ’s 5-12 squad including seniors T.J. Burl, Ryan Lee, Mitch Miller, Lawrence Montanaro, Jeremy Wood, and Sean Pulsifer.

Juniors Jordan Holderidge, Kyle Sprague, Robert Lee, Matthew Key, and Nathan Casey also return with varsity experience.

Joining the team this year will be junior Colin Pope, sophomore Alexander Conner, and Freshman Shane Douglas, all of whom will lead the charge at forward. Newcomers Nick Rhino and Adam Butler will rotate into key defensive positions.

“We are an inexperienced team, but will improve as the year progresses,” said head coach Bob Hamilton. “Desire and attitude will dictate our success and how quickly we inprove as a unit.”

AVCS girls look for banner year CLINTONVILLE — Last year, the AuSable Valley girls soccer team barely missed out on a division title. This year, they’re back in the hunt again.

“AuSable Valley expects to compete for, not only the CVAC Division II title, but also for the best record overall in the CVAC,” said head coach Keith Raines. “We have a strong group of returning players with varsity experience that will help us compete with the top teams in the CVAC.” Among those returning are all-star midfielders Amanda Hamilton and Sidney Flint.

The two combined for 22 goals and seven assists last year and, along with returning seniors Sam Ashline and Johanna Recny at for-

ward, will continue to be a major force for the Patriot’s offense.

The AuSable Valley midfield and defense also shows plenty of talent and experience with goalkeeper Jenna Finnegan, fullback Alexis Coolidge, and midfielders Cammy Keyser and Megan Colby returning. Sophomores Bryce Allen and Liz Rennie also return with varsity experience.

Seniors Taylor Loreman and Jessie Slater; Juniors Tonya Bombard and Kasaydia Carter-Martines; sophomores Haley Taylor and Logan Snow; and freshmen Rachel Knapp, Molly Mashtare, and Taylore Saltus join the team this year, providing added depth.

Patriots show promise on the gridiron CLINTONVILLE — They may be young, but the AuSable Valley football team is eager to prove themselves and improve on last year ’s 1-8 record.

“We would like to steadly improve, game by game,” said Patriots’ head coach Heith Ford. “Our team has a goal to do away with the mental errors that have plagued us in seasons past. We are genarally young and inexperienced in skill positions. Therefore, patience must prevail.”

Junior quarterback Austin House leads a determined goup of backs, including John Sikander, Jorden Bouyea, Hank Whisher, and Joe Prentiss.

Anchoring the offensive and defensive lines will be returning all-stars David Thompson and Justin Hart, Pat SantaMaria, Adam Luxon, Zach Hart, James Crowning-

shield, Brennan Parrish, Ryan Nolan, James Braid, Jeff Galusha, Cory Joy, Philip Nolan, Bryce Passino, Chris LaFontaine, Austin Smith, Michael Thompson, and Elijah Fitzgerald.

Look for Kody Buysse, Conner Manning, AJ Parrow, Kyle Prinsen, Sawyer Taro, Pat Sargent, Jon Luxon, and Matthew Lamere to make key tackles from the defensive backfield.

Assistant coaches for the team include Steve Maiorca, Mike Maloney, and Sam Hall.

Patriots bring experience to the court CLINTONVILLE — Graduation and the season shift took its toll on AuSable Valley’s volleyball team, but they will look to surprise their opponents this with a solid group of veterans.

The team lost Alexandra Hoey and Shiloh Bourgeois to graduation, both key players.

The shift to fall also meant the loss of Amanda Hamilton to the soccer team.

Still, a host of seniors are on the roster this year, including returning players Karissa

Fuller, Emily Miller, Kelly McBrearity, Chelsea Lawrence, and Mallory Finnegan.

The shift to fall also allowed basketball player Kayla Taylor to join this year, along with fellow senior Kassie LeClair. Jacqueline Hoey, a junior, and sophomore Belle O’Toole bring promising depth to the veteran squad.

“We hope to improve our passing and defense so we can be competitive in all our matches,” said head coach Sandra Hoey.

Youth key for Saranac Lake boys SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake boys soccer team will look to make the most of a generally young squad this year.

This year ’s team features just seven seniors, most of whom return with varsity experience. Pat McHugh, Sam Baker, Matt Martin, Wyatt Daviau, Conor McCormick, Nick Magro, and Sean Lanigan will all be relied upon for their leadership.

They are joined by a speedy group of jun-

iors, including Jesse Ettinger, Skylar Dell, Nate Capone, Steve Rodriguez, and Will Fieroh, all of whom will rotate throughthe front line. Ricky Schmidt will start at keeper while Alec McLean, Tyler Rondeau, Max Calderone, Jamaal Tuthill, Jack Rockefeller, Idriz Cecunjanin, and Cody Wright will provide valuable depth in the midfield and back line.

Saranac Lake girls ready for challenge SARANAC LAKE — Graduation was tough on Saranac Lake’s girls soccer team, leaving them with just six seniors returning from last year. Still, with a good mix of experience and young talent, they hope to make a splash in the CVAC this year.

Third-year starters Mackenzie Cotter and Shannon Muldowny return to lead the young team. Forwards Chelly Pietras, Eliza Lennon and Hope Laramee; midfielders Chelsea LaFountain and Jackie Dubee; and

defenders Alex Covert and Selma Radoncic also return with varsity experience.

Joining them will be and juniors Jazzmyn Tuthill, Gabby Lewis, Kaitlyn Walker-Law, Marisa Farmer, and Christina Rabideu, who is expected start in goal.

Several promising sophomores also join the team this year, including Megan Kilroy, Regan Kieffer, Megan Moody, Sydney Battistoni, Annie Frenette, and Vanessa Salamy.

Good season brewing for Red Storm SARANAC LAKE — With several key players returning from last year ’s 8-2 team, the Red Storm will look for continued success in the Northern Football Conference.

Quarterback Forrest Morgan, a first-team all-star on both sides of the ball last year, returns with an offensive core that features last year ’s leading rusher, C.J. Stewart, fullback Sean Ryan, and all-star wide reciever Austin McDonough. Quarterback Mike Phelan, running back Peter Madden and wide reciever Dalton Demarco, all seniors, will alternate regularly into the offense.

Other backs include seniors Logan Ploof, Mike Sapone and Josh Quinn; and juniors

Josh Tremblay, Jordan Ladoceur, Mike Tuthill, Brady Deangelo, Devin Darrah, Ty Curry, Ethan Barge, JD Donnelly, Ben Monty, and Kyle Dora.

Saranac Lake spikers find new home SARANAC LAKE — Saranac Lake’s volleyball team had a tough season last year, managing just two wins, but they’ve got a lot of things going for them this year.

The Red Storm will be playing in a newly remodeled high school gym rather than in the middle school, said head coach Erin LaFave. They will also benefit from some brand new equipment.

The team returns five seniors who were starters on last year ’s team, including team points leaders Ryan Garnish and Mariah LaBrake. Senior hitters Kristy Duguay,

Brook Fitzgerald and libero Vanessa Dashnaw also bring valuable experience.

Joining them in the starting rotation will be juniors Nickie Trudeau, Sadie Posdzich and Abby Smith and sophomore Kylie Sapone. Rounding out the roster are senior Shauna Manning and Junior Brenna Snyder.

“The newest members from the Junior Varsity team will also be a big asset to the team due to their outstanding serving,” said LaFave. “All of the girls will help with the success with the team.”

Blue Bombers look to bounce back LAKE PLACID — With a solid core of returning players, the Lake Placid volleyball team can only improve on last year ’s 0-16 record.

Five seniors return with varsity experience, including Brianna Wyle, Ali Baumbach, Kelly Watson, Harlee Stanton, and Christyne Ellis, who was a big part of the Blue Bombers’ offense last year.

Also returning are juniors Olivia Dempsey, Joanna Politi, and Fran Pickett, another key hitter from last year.

They are joined by newcomers Kylee Paye and Dani Balestrini, who had been playing basketball when Volleyball was held in the winter season.

“Our goal is to raise our level of play over last year and to be competitive in our matches,” said Lake Placid head coach Donna Moody.
