KEESEVILLE — The Keeseville Elks Lodge #2072 will be hosting its annual Soccer Shoot 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, at the field behind the Lodge. There will be music, games, and refreshments for all ages.

The Soccer Shoot is a fun, drug-free activity for all children age 13 and younger. The Elks Soccer Shoot program consists of two different contests that test different level skills at different ages.

Participants in the U-8 and U-10 age groups compete in the Five Goal Contest, which consists of a series of five goals, decreasing in size from 48 inches to 17 inches. The U-8 contestants kick from 15 feet from the face of the goal, while the U-10 contestants kick from 18 feet from the goal.

Participants in the U-12 and U-14 age groups compete in the Grid Goal Contest, which consists of a full-size goal sectioned off so points can be scored when the ball is kicked into certain sections. The contest is open to both boys and girls, and they shoot separately. Bring a copy of the child’s birth certificate for proof of age.

he annual Field, Forest and Stream Festival is coming up on Saturday, September 25 at the Adirondack Center History Museum in Elizabethtown.

The Arts Council here in Westport, which organizes the event, is looking for vendors and exhibitors “who sell handmade items that tie in with the festival's focus on the harvest, hunt, and other traditional North Country work and leisure time activities.” If that sounds like you, call the Arts Council at 9628778 before the Sept. 13 deadline.

This is always a great outing for the family, with fascinating activities for kids of all ages and lots of wonderful food. I may be biased, but I think it's common knowledge that the Wadhams Library Pesto Grilled Cheese and Tomato on Dogwood Bread Company Sourdough has the edge in the food department.

We'll be there grilling away—stop by and say hello.

Another annual event that always brings a smile to my face is the Shakespeare-in-thePark Festival's Labor Day weekend show, which takes place on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 3

p.m. at the Performance Pavilion in Ballard Park. This year, Carrie Treadwell and the other outstanding actors of American Studio Theater will perform Shakespeare's The Two Gentlemen of Verona, under the direction of Rebecca Lincoln (who also directed last year's memorable Henry V).

It's always amazing to me how Carrie and her friends manage to bring out the humor in lines that less inventive or imaginative actors would make far less of. Actors like me, for example. I was in two different productions of A Midsummer Night's Dream in school and thought I knew the play pretty well.

These folks got a hold of it and suddenly scenes that I thought were fairly straightforward were making me howl with laughter.

They weren't adding a layer of comedy over the text, they were bringing the humor out of it. I'd just never seen that it was there the whole time, waiting to be discovered.

So bring a chair or blanket and enjoy the Shakespeare the best way possible—out of doors, with the gorgeous backdrop of Lake Champlain. And don't forget, it's free!

don’t know about you, but eightyplus degree weather really doesn’t make me think of back to school – but that is North Country weather for you.

Students are off to college starting this week, and our youngsters are hitting the books next week. Good luck to all students in all your academic endeavors.

Another juxtaposition to the weather is the fact that the Keeseville Free Library will be starting its fall/winter hours the day after Labor Day, Tuesday, Sept. 7. The hours will now be Mondays 1–7 p.m.; Tuesdays and Wednesdays 10 a.m. to noon and then 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.; closed Thursdays; open Fridays from 1 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and closed on Sundays. The current Art Show will continue to run until September tenth so make sure to stop in and see all the great local art work on display and for sale. his past week’s long run of warm and dry weather is perfect for getting in the second cutting of hay.

It’s delightful to have the sweet aromas of drying clover and grass wafting through the open windows of our house. Farmers all over are mowing and tedding, raking and baling, and our hay man is busy as well. He generally prefers to use older, smaller and simpler equipment, which he operates at a nice easy pace. His windrows are neat and straight, and no hay is baled until it’s thoroughly dried. However, for this cutting, our hay man brought in a local dairy farmer with a fast, wide mower to mow our big field. The reason? It’s almost time to start chopping corn silage, and the dairyman relies on our hay man to do the chopping for him. The warm summer is bringing all sorts of crops, including corn, to maturity much faster than usual. Last year the dairy farmer didn’t get in the first cutting of hay until August, thanks to the

summer long.

The Keeseville United Methodist Church will start its Sunday School program again in September at 9:30 on Sundays at the Church located right in the downtown.

September also is the month of a food drive collection during the communion on the Sept. 5 Mass.

The Chesterfield Fish and Game Club will have their tremendous Sportman’s Expo next weekend. More on this in the next column.

Down the road from us, AuSable Forks will have its annual Labor Day celebration Sept. 6 with the parade at 10 a.m. and then games, fun and food all afternoon with 2 p.m. bingo and raffle drawings at 6 p.m.

Soon enough, it will be time to enjoy the splendor of our community as the leaves change their colors to the fall look that will soon enough be upon us. Enjoy the manyfaceted weather that the North Country gives us.

As deputy town supervisor, I’ve been reading old Essex town board minutes to verify the establishment of various town bank accounts. My research took me to minutes from the early 1970s, where mixed in with the usual proceedings was a suggestion the town formulate regulations to govern rock concerts and festivals. It seems to have been only a temporary concern, perhaps arising from the events at Woodstock and Altamont, and no further action was taken.

The minutes also contained a motion to allow only the custodian of the town dump to pick the dump. I grew up in rural Maine, and my grandmother and I were avid dump pickers. At our dump, you always set anything “good” to one side, to give others a chance at your castoffs. We never found anything more useful than a three-legged chair, but the thrill was really in the search.

ur community is so blessed to have such a great Rescue Squad; they sure have been busy this past weekend. A fatal accident, two or three ambulance calls close together, hopefully you noticed on their outside sign just how many calls they have been out on this year. Hopefully when they have their barrel drops, we give generously. Have you noticed the nice new outdoor picnic area on the Fire Hall grounds?

It is wonderful news that Eli Schwartzberg has received his full funding to renovate the old school building. This will be such a boon for the downtown area.

Now if we could only get a grocery market to once again move into town, that would be great.But as a community, if this should happen, we need to patronize such a business. School starts soon and we need to be aware of students walking, biking, and getting on and off the school busses.

There are only two more weeks for the Farmer ’s Market to be here in Willsboro.

Last week, and I believe this week, the political parties have a booth at the Market.

This last week, the Democratic Party had a sample of the new ballot that we will be using this year for the election so people can become familiar with how it looks.

Candidate signs are going up all over town to help us make our choice on Sept. 14 for that slot on the Republican line. Voting will not be hard, so hopefully we’ll have a great turn out.

Congratulations to Amie (Bigelow) and Steven Pike on the birth of their daughter on July 17, she came into this world late in the evening and weighted 6 lbs 8 1/2 ounces; her name is Lillian May Pike.

Bud’s Buds Labor Day Weekend End of Season Sale

KEENE — The third annual Great Adirondack Rutabaga Festival will take place 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, at Marcy Field.

The annual celebration of this root vegetable is one of only two rutabaga festivals in the country. Throughout the day, attendees will enjoy tastings and demonstrations of innovative rutabaga creations by celebrity chefs, and all are eligible to enter the rutabaga competition, with prizes for the largest, most unique and best-decorated ‘bagas. There will also be kids activities, and an exciting “Fetch-a-’Baga” game for talented dog attendees.

The day’s events also include the 5k Rutabaga Run at 9 a.m., the High Peaks Hula Hoop Championship at 10:30 a.m., and coronation of the Rutabaga king and queen at 12:30 p.m.

Registration for the Rutabaga 5k run will be held on site at 8:15 a.m., and pre-registration is available at the Keene Town Hall, Cornell Cooperative Extension in Westport, or online at www.active.com. Entries for the rutabaga competition must be delivered for display and judging by 10 a.m. Extra-special-talented dog entries for the Fetch-a-’Baga do not require pre-registration.

his week, the NCSPCA would like to give you some statistics on homeless animals. If you have a dog or cat and you're unsure whether to spay or neuter your pet, there are many good reasons to go ahead and visit your vet!

Here are some interesting facts: Every day, 10,000 humans are born in the US, and 70,000 kittens and puppies are also born. An unspayed female cat, her mate and all of their offspring, producing two litters per year, with 2.8 kittens surviving from each litter, can total over 11,600,000 cats in nine years. In six years, one unspayed dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs. (Source, Spay USA) Olivia Many of these animals end up homeless. In fact, only one in five puppies and kittens stay in their natural homes; the remaining four often end up abandoned or in a shelter. (Source, HSUS). Although the NCSPCA is a No-Kill shelter, there are many shelters throughout the country that practice euthanasia, and even No-Kill shelters have to turn away animals if they are already overrun.

If this information seems a bit grim and overwhelming, consider some of the positive results of spaying or neutering your pet: neutered animals tend to get along together better; have fewer male territorial behaviors (such as spraying); are less likely to stray from home; and especially in the case of females, have a lower incidence of cancer. There really is no reason not to spay or neuter when you consider the facts.

illiam Butler Yeats wrote the following lines in Cloths from Heaven: “I have spread my dreams beneath your feet / tread softly because you tread on my dreams.”

Almost every day and in so many ways, young people come in and out of our lives and they bring their dreams with them. Sometimes they are incredibly talented and possess so many assets that, though they still want our adult approval, such is their ability that what they really want is to ensure that we do not get in their way.

For the most part, however, young people are like most of us, they

They are what used to be called, “well-rounded,” possessed of varied interests and inclinations but often lacking an area of profound interest or skill. As our culture becomes more and more specialized and competitive, will the young people and later the adults that we anoint, become an even smaller group than it is now?

While in Graduate School, I became acquainted with a concept developed by Italian Economist Vilfredo Pareto. The import of Pareto’s Principle or Pareto’s Analysis is that 20 percent of the vital few will influence 80 percent of the outcomes in any given situation. Later, a variety of economists demonstrated that, worldwide, Pareto’s distribution of wealth was valid. In 1989, 20 percent of the richest people in the world possessed 82.7 percent of the wealth.

If the 80/20 rule is valid and 20 percent of any given population controls 80 percent of the resources, where that does leave the 80 percent that only have 20 percent of the resources to compete for? Are we all engaged in a desperate struggle to become part of the 20 percent that control most of the resources? For some, yes, and some will move into the controlling 20 percent.

For those of us who will not become part of the controlling 20 percent, does that make our dreams invalid? I hope not. I believe that it is still possible for anyone to realize their dream or dreams, irrespective of Pareto’s 80/20 rule.

Most adults come to the end of their own dreams on their own terms and in their own time. I would like to believe that our children deserve our intentional protection and preservation of their dreams, at least for a while.

We can help preserve a child’s dream by suspending judgment about their dreams and by becoming an adult voice of support. In not telling a child that their dream is wrong, you empower them to explore today’s dream and the many dreams that will follow if they are not sufficiently discouraged. Their dreams are precious, rare and part of our national treasure.

The children in each of our individual worlds have laid their dreams at our feet, please, tread softly as it is their dreams upon which we tread. Remember, all kids count.

To the editor: The St. John Feral Cat Fund Inc. has been sterilizing feral (wild), stray and abandoned cats since July 2002. Our organization has spayed/neutered over 2,200 cats and adopted out over 900 cats and kittens.

We have also provided food and shelter for the last 8 years for more than 30 outdoor cat colonies as well as helped local residents learn about Trap-Neuter-Return.

We are run entirely by volunteers and do not have paid staff.

Over the last two years, and the economy not helping matters, our organization has been struggling to raise funds and meet our goals to help the cats that are in need.

We depend 100 percent on public donations to continue this work — saving lives, one cat at a time!

Disabled veterans sue for float plane access

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — Six North Country veterans have filed a federal lawsuit in an effort to restore float plane access to remote Adirondack lakes.

Maynard Baker, Douglas Irish, Mark Schumaker, Ronald Dixon, Richard Kenny and Joseph Franklin, filed suit Aug. 23 in United States District Court alleging state policies restricting float planes from landing and taking off from dozens of Adirondack lakes amount to discrimination under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Baker, a former town supervisor of Warrensburg, said he has a list of 40 remote lakes, all of which were open to seaplanes prior to 1972, when the State Land Master Plan was implemented, banning the use of motorized vehicles, including seaplanes, on lands classified as Wilderness, Primitive, or Canoe.

“The DEC and Adirondack Park Agency have said, ‘you able-bodied people can still walk in and enjoy those lakes,’ but the only means the disabled had, they took that away from them,” said Baker. “That’s discrimination.”

All six plaintiffs in the case “are classified as qualified disabled persons under the ADA,” the suit says, and all have served in the military.

Baker said the suit was filed mainly with disabled veterans in mind, including those returning from recent service in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“Our veterans deserve a lot more than they’re getting,” Baker added. “There shouldn’t be a square foot of the United States off limits to these special people, but they’ve done it.”

The lawsuit names APA chairman Curt Stiles, DEC commissioner Pete Grannis, and Gov. David A. Paterson as defendants. It seeks an injunction against state regulation of aircraft operations within the Adirondack Park and the award of legal fees if the case is successful.

Lake, a man-made reservoir 10 miles southwest of Tupper Lake.

In April 2009, after two years of debate between preservationist groups, seaplane operators, and officials from the DEC and APA, the two agencies agreed to ban float planes from the lake after 2011, claiming their use violated the SLMP. Baker said Lows Lake is not among the 40 on his list however, and the lawsuit makes no mention of Lows Lake.

DEC spokeswoman Maureen Wren said the agency would not comment on the pending litigation. APA spokesman Keith McKeever also declined comment.

‘Reasonable modifications’ New revisions to the ADA that became effective July 23 may prove to be a major turning point in the case. The added regulations require state and local government programs to “make reasonable modifications in their policies” to allow access to individuals with disabilities through the use of “other power-driven mobility devices,” including those powered by a fuel-driven engine, so long as such modifications do not violate “legitimate safety requirements” or pose a “substantial risk of serious harm” to natural or cultural resources in the immediate area.

The plaintiffs are being represented by attorney Matt Norfolk of the Lake Placid-based Briggs & Norfolk firm.

“We just want to be able to have our day in court to say, ‘What are the impacts of float planes compared with what’s already being allowed?’” he said.

Allowing people with disabilities the use of float planes to access the remote lakes and surrounding regions would not “fundamentally altar” the way wilderness lands are currently being utilized, Norfolk said, claiming state agencies allow the unnecessary use of helicopters and other motorized vehicles to transport supplies and researchers into some remote wilderness areas.

The complaint also claims the re-utilization of float planes will have less of an impact than “the tens of thousands of hikers and campers that each year continue to devastate those lands already classified as Wilderness.”

“The only thing that the preservationists and the Park Agency have complained about is the noise of a seaplane taking off,” said Baker, noting the planes make very little noise when landing. “It’s just 60 to 90 seconds of noise when the plane takes off, and then it’s gone.”

region is what Raskin hopes will motivate people to come out for his event with the intent on helping others.

“The hospital my mother and I were involved with in Queens was a hellhole, the doctor was great, but the hospital was a hellhole,” said Raskin. “We never had any programs like [Adirondack Medical Center]. We were grasping greased ropes constantly because there was no one to reach out to.”

Raskin is so appreciative of places like Adirondack Medical Center that he said he’s willing to help double the donations received at his book signing.

“I’ll match whatever we bring in. We really want to make this as successful as possible,” he said. “Even if you come down and don’t want to buy a book, that’s fine. Leave $5 for the cause.”

PLATTSBURGH — Cancer is something M. Dylan Raskin takes very seriously. The disease claimed the life of his mother six years ago, leading him on a mission to eradicate it ever since.

The critically-acclaimed author of “Little New York Bastard” and “Bandanas and October Supplies,” is using his star power to draw people in to help others suffering from can-

cer. Raskin will be signing copies of his books at the Koffee Kat on Margaret Street Saturday, Sept. 18. The signing will double as an event to raise money for Adirondack Medical Center ’s Countess Alicia Spaulding Paolozzi Breast Imaging Center in Saranac Lake.

“I’m pretty excited about it. I hope we’re able to get a good chunk of change to give to these people,” said Raskin.

Raskin lost his mother to ovarian cancer in September 2004. The book signing comes at a time of year that has special meaning to him,

and as the nation prepares to celebrate October as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

“Every year at this time I think of ways I can slap back at that disease,” said Raskin.

However, following the loss of his mother, Raskin didn’t even want to hear the word cancer.

“For a good amount of time, I didn’t want to get involved with anything that had to do with cancer. I wanted to get as far away from it as possible,” Raskin admitted. “It’s six years later and it’s now getting a little easier for me to deal with it.”

Raskin moved to the North Country from Queens when his mother became ill and stayed following her passing. He became so enchanted with the beauty of the area, the slower pace of upstate and the people who live here, he bought a home in Jay, where he spends half of his time and the other half in Plattsburgh.

“I’ve found some of the best people I’ve ever met here,” said Raskin. “Even though this is kind of a financially-depressed area, people here will give you the shirts off their backs. And, when you come from the world I come from, you don’t see that a lot.”

Play performances spark political discussion

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com UPPER JAY — A local theatre troupe is adding a unique purpose to their performances.

The Book and Blanket Players of Upper Jay have partnered with the Adirondack Democracy to perform “Mrs. Farnsworth,” a comedic play with political overtones.

The play has six performances at three different venues: Sept. 3 and 4 at BluSeed Studios in Saranac Lake, Sept. 10 and 11 at the Old Mill Art Studio in Elizabethtown, and Sept. 16 and 17 at Hawkins Hall, SUNY Plattsburgh.

Fred Balzac is co-founder of Adirondack Democracy, a grassroots political organization.

“We thought that the play would be entertaining in and of itself,” said Balzac, but we thought it’d be a nice jumping-off point to talk about some other stuff.”

Each hour-and-a-half performance will conclude with a panel dicussion about recent events in American politics.

“Mrs. Farnsworth,” was penned by A.R. Gurney, and premiered off-broadway in 2004, not long before that year ’s Presidential election. Sigourney Weaver and John Lithgow starred in the original cast.

The play is set in a creative writing class in Manhattan and centers around three main characters.

Kathleen Recchia plays the title character, a student in the class eager to publish her em-

bellished memoir: the tale of a Vassar girl who becomes pregnant by a hard-partying Yale boy.

“It becomes clear from the things she mentions that the man is George W. Bush,” Balzac explained.

George G. Davis Jr. of Essex plays Gordon Bell, the preoccupied teacher who becomes intrigued with Mrs. Farnsworth and her memoir when he realizes that having it published could influence the outcome of the 2004 election.

The water becomes a bit more muddied, however, with the entrance of Mr. Farnsworth, played by Kevin Cooper of Westport, who offers a different perspective of his wife and her narrative.

“It’s not a one-sided story,” said Balzac. “Things get balanced out and the audience is left with questions.”

It’s those questions Balzac hopes will spark some interesting discussions about what is true and what is fabrication, both in the context of the play and in reality.

All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. and admission is free with a $5 suggested donation.

Any proceeds above production costs will be donated to Greg Mortenson’s Central Asia Institute and its efforts to build schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Festival of Colors heralds fall season in Wilmington

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com WILMINGTON — An end-of-summer tradition returns to this mountainside village next weekend when Wilmington hosts the seventh annual Festival of the Colors, Saturday, Sept. 11, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the ball field on Springfield Road.

This multi-hued event draws hundreds as it celebrates the coming of autumn with live entertainment, local arts and crafts, fresh produce and baked goods, and plenty of free activities and games for children.

As in the past, there will be a special appearance by the characters of Santa’s Workshop and a performance by Pipsqueak the Clown. The popular pie-baking contest also returns.

New kids’ activities include a blow-up slide, obstacle courses, and horse and pony rides.

“We’re doing a special 9/11 tribute because it’s being held on Sept. 11,” said

Michelle Burns, operations manager of the Whiteface Region Business and Tourism Center.

Vendors will be on hand selling locallyproduced art, photography, furniture, and other goods.

Winning bids for the Chairs of Wilmington project will be announced during the festival. The project features 17 Adirondackstyle chairs, uniquely decorated by local artists in partnership with community youth.

The chairs are located at sponsor businesses throughout Wilmington, and a map and silent auction bid instructions are available at the Visitors Bureau office. Bids will be accepted until Sept. 11, and all proceeds benefit the Wilmington Youth Center.

“The main focus of this is for the local resident and our neighboring communities,” said Burns. “It’s a great way to wrap up the summer and get together with friends in a fun festival atmosphere.

tract for our Civil Service employees,” Chapin said. “These are some of our lowest-paid employees, hard-working individuals.”

“I can show you a lot of hardworking people in the private sector that are making $11 or $12 an hour and have to contribute 50 percent to their health insurance,” countered Douglas.

Voting against the resolution were Douglas, Moriah supervisor Tom Scozzafava, Essex supervisor Sharon Boisen, Keene supervisor Bill Ferebee, Crown Point supervisor Bethany Kosmider, Wilmington supervisor Randy Preston, Ticonderoga supervisor Debra Malaney, and Lewis supervisor David Blades.

Those voting in favor of the resolution were Merrihew, Connell, Newcomb supervisor George Canon, Minerva supervisor Sue Montgomery-Corey, Chesterfield supervisor Gerald Morrow, and North Hudson supervisor Robert Dobie.

Schroon supervisor Cathy Moses, St. Armand supervisor Joyce Morency, and North Elba supervisor Roby Politi were all absent from the meeting.

The resolution could be brought up again at a future meeting if it is introduced by a supervisor who voted against it or was absent at the time of the Aug. 30 vote.

County manager Dan Palmer said if Essex County were to reject the contract, NCCC would have to re-initiate negotiations with their Civil Service employees, regardless of whether Franklin County approved it.

Palmer said the cost to hire representation for new negotiations may cancel out any savings that might come from eliminating the raises.

Raises From page 1 The contract offers those employees a $1,000 raise after one year with additional 3-percent raises in each of the two years to follow.

It also offers fully-paid health insurance for existing staff, requiring only new hires to contribute 8 percent to their insurance.

It was these benefits that many supervisors, particularly Jay supervisor Randy Douglas, took issue with.

“Any raises that come before me this year, I’m going to vote ‘no’ on,” said Douglas, noting the flat payroll he’s urged in his own town. “Raises at this point, I just can’t justify them anywhere.”

Others defended the contract, however. Elizabethtown supervisor Noel Merrihew was a member of the college’s negotiating committee.

“The 3 percent could have gone someplace else,” said Merrihew, “but it’s the total cost of the contract we’re looking at.”

NCCC vice president of Fiscal Operations William Chapin said the contract negotiations date back to 2009 and were part of a college budget that amounted to a 2.5-percent increase in overall spending, due in large part to a 16-percent increase in enrollment.

“I think they’ve done their due diligence,” said Westport supervisor Dan Connell. “I’m in full support of the college.”

Chapin noted the annual payroll for the 24 Civil Service employees, most of whom are clerical and maintenance staff, currently amounts to around $700,000.

Professional actors to perform Shakespeare WESTPORT — Westport’s annual Shakespeare-in-the-Park Festival presents its second production of the season Labor Day weekend with Shakespeare’s “The Two Gentlemen of Verona,” directed by Rebecca Lincoln. Two seminars remain for DCA grants WESTPORT — Developing Community Arts grants are available through the Arts Council of the Northern Adirondacks to support art and cultural activities taking place in Essex and Southern Franklin counties in 2011. These grants are available for arts activities in theatre, dance, music, film, video, literature, visual arts, museums, and cultural activities held for the benefit of residents of Essex or Southern Franklin counties.

Art and cultural organizations, youth groups, towns, service groups, and other local nonprofit groups offering artistic or cultural services or programs are all eligible to apply. Individual artists may apply through a sponsor.

Applicants may request up to $5,000 for one project or request up to three separate projects for a total of $5,000. The DCA grant program is a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization grant program and is administered by the Arts Council for the Northern Adirondacks.

The application deadline is Wednesday, Oct. 6.

Attendance at an application seminar is required for first- and second-time applicants. Applicants must pre-register for the seminars.

As many as 10 outdoor antiques booths, each 10feet-by-10-feet, will be available at $60 each. Double-size booths are $100. Approximately 50 10feet-by-eight-feet deep spaces are available under tents with additional 10-feet-by-10-feet spaces outside.

A special nonprofit rate of $35 and $30, respectively, is available. Tables and chairs are the exhibitor’s responsibility. The cost for space is $50 under a tent, $40 outside and $60 for food and antiques. United Way plans Kickoff Breakfast PLATTSBURGH — The United Way of the Adirondack Region, Inc. will officially kick off the United Way’s Campaign 2011 with its annual Kickoff Breakfast Thursday, Sept. 16, at 8 a.m. at the West Side Ballroom, 253 New York Road. DNA tests verify bones are remains of accused killer’s wife June Collard went missing in 1980

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com MINERVA — A state police laboratory has identified the human remains dug up at the former home site of Thomas A. Collard as belonging to his wife June Collard, who disappeared in 1980, police announced Aug. 27.

Thomas Collard, who confessed to killing her, state police said, is now being held in Essex County Jail on a charge of second-de-

gree murder.

On Aug. 10, state police unearthed the bones at 76 Wilson Road in Olmstedville, where the Collard trailer stood decades ago.

Thomas Collard, 62,was charged with murder after he was questioned and arrested several weeks ago in Alabama.

When questioned by state police investigators, Collard allegedly confessed to causing the death of June Collard, describing in detail how he had disposed of her body.

Thomas Collard’s signed confession said June Collard had come to his home — they had been separated for some time — and after an argument, he punched her and she then fell through a door and hit her head

against a hot water tank, authorities said.

In his statement, Collard said he checked for signs of life, but found no pulse nor breathing, and later dumped June’s body out a window into a hole that had been dug for a septic system, according to the confession, police said.

After June Collard’s disappearance in 1980, Thomas Collard told authorities he believed she had left town with another man.

Community rallies to aid injured teen

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com AU SABLE FORKS — A few months ago, the possibilities seemed endless for Michaela Bushey.

The 19-year-old Au Sable Forks native, the daughter of Mike and Angela Bushey, was already well-known in the area as a bright student and talented musician.

Michaela, a gifted mezzo-soprano, was frequently asked to sing “The Star Spangled Banner” at sporting events, played piano and sang at her church in Keeseville, and won prominent roles in several school and community theatre productions.

She graduated from AuSable Valley Central School as salutatorian at age 16 and has maintained dean’s list status each semester at Ithaca College, where she just finished her junior year, double-majoring in vocal performance and music education.

But Michaela’s future took a dramatic turn July 4 when, while swimming at her boyfriend’s house, she hit her head during a dive, suffering a spinal cord injury that has since left her hospitalized.

“One instant, everything’s fine, and then the next instant the world is totally changed,” said Angela, who recalled the phone call she received that day.

“I thought it was kids trying to play a sick joke,” she said, noting how Michaela, an experienced swimmer and diver, had swam with friends at the same pool many times. “I don’t know what went wrong.”

Michaela was rushed to Fletcher Allen Health Center in Burlington, Vt., where she underwent surgery. Two weeks later, she was flown to the Shepherd Center, a hospital specializing in spinal cord injuries, in Atlanta, Ga., where she remains in treatment.

Paralyzed Though she has generally been alert, conscious, and in stable condition, Michaela has become almost fully paralyzed below her neck.

“She doesn’t have a lot of movement,” said Angela. “She only has the movement in her right arm.”

The limited movement and the faint sensations Michaela feels throughout her body give the Busheys some hope she can recover to some degree, but her doctors are not promising a miracle.

“They’re very non-committal at this point,” Angela said, “They say it’s early, but she’s got to be treated as a quadriplegic.”

Though the family has health insurance for Michaela, Angela said it does not cover all the expenses, and Michaela will have to delay her return to college while she undergoes treatment.

“She just can’t do anything for herself anymore,” Angela said.

Friends and neighbors Word of Michaela’s injury spread quickly, and many in and around Au Sable Forks called to help. Jessie Douglass, the Bushey’s

next-door neighbor, led efforts to organize an Aug. 7 dinner and auction fundraiser.

“They kind of keep to themselves, and I just figured somebody needed to do something for them,” Douglass said.

Friends and neighbors volunteered to cook and perform music at the event, which was hosted by American Legion Post 504.

As news of the event spread, individuals and businesses, some from as far as Mooers and Ticonderoga, called offering to donate items for the auction.

“They just wondered how such a thing could happen to such a great person,” said Susan Richards, who has performed on stage with Michaela and sang a special song for her at the event.

When all was said and done, the event raised more than $32,000.

“The whole community came together,” said Douglass. “The whole North Country came together, and that’s why it was such a huge success.”

Richards is currently working with others who have been in theatre productions with Michaela to put together another fundraiser, a musical revue, that will likely take place later this year.

Until then, she encouraged others to continue to send donations to Michaela and her family.

“I just pray every day that she regains mobility,” said Richards, “that she’s able to sing and play the piano and do all the things she really likes to do. I just pray for a full recovery for her.”

Michaela Bushey Determined Angela said the support of the community has been overwhelming and the many phone calls and prayers Michaela’s been receiving from friends and loved ones have helped the brilliant young woman remain positive.

“She’s determined,” said Angela, “She always has hope, and she always does things 110 percent. I hope she’ll continue to do that and give it her best.”

Take it easy on ol’ Uncle Ted F

or those of you who have yet to hear, Ted Nugent, the 61-year-old rock icon turned hunting show host, was recently in the news for violating nearly a dozen game laws while taping an episode of his show “Spirit of the Wild” in California.

Nugent reportedly hunted over an attractant called “C’Mere Deer,” which California does not allow. He also took a spikehorn with his bow in an area with antler restrictions.

The episode of Nugent shooting the young buck aired on the Outdoor Channel in February, and California game wardens viewing the show were quick to notice Nugent’s violations.

He was originally facing 11 charges, but agreed to a deal with Yuba County prosecutors this month under which he pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors and agreed to a $1,750 fine.

While some may chastise Nugent — who has long championed ethical hunting practices — for not knowing local laws, I would hope the majority can look past this err in judgement.

Ted Nugent has been a positive force among sportsmen and gun activists for decades, fighting for rights the antis claw at every day.

His unselfish ways with our military, the disabled and our nation’s youth are well documented — a fact he should be commended for.

In this age of broken promises and double talk, Nugent isn’t afraid to speak his mind at the risk of being politically incorrect.

He says the things the majority of us are thinking but are afraid to put in print and has sent many a bunny hugger scurrying down the

hole from which they emerged.

For this, I think ol’ Uncle Ted deserves a “C’mere Deer” salute.

Moreover, I would hope folks consider the circumstances surrounding Ted’s case before passing judgement.

While I know neither Ted or I would ever advocate breaking game laws, I think many game wardens would readily admit there is plenty of ambiguity and grey area in some.

I have never understood, for example, why it is legal to hunt over a food plot or on the edge of a cornfield or apple orchard but not near an attractant made of these very same materials.

I’ve watched from a treestand as deer crunched away on freshly fallen apples, but rake those same apples into a pile and you’re breaking the law.

I mean, what if you mow your food plot and the deer are browsing on the clippings you dumped over the bank?

I suppose that would be illegal, too.

Or, what if you cut down an oak tree laden with acorns. Could that be construed as feeding the deer?

Seems like a lot of subjectivity there.

Some states define products like “C’Mere Deer,” “Deer Cane” and “Acorn Rage” as attractants, and they are therefore legal to use, while others — like New York — classify them as feed. In New York, it is illegal to feed deer in any way, except, of course, if it is the aforementioned food plot, corn field or apple orchard.

But lures and calls that trick a deer into looking for love and airborne scents, like the “Buck Bomb” scented fogger — also marketed

by Acorn Rage — are perfectly legal.

Confused yet?

Perhaps I can help. According to state lawmakers, if it is an attractant that might “entice a deer to feed” you’d better leave it on the shelf at Gander Mountain.

Call me crazy, but I might argue that a can firing acorn flavored scent at 100 mph into the air could “entice a deer to feed.”

Obituaries Rosemary Ellen Munsen Aug. 4, 1924 - Aug. 28, 2010 NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – Rosemary E. Munson, 86, died Friday, Aug. 27, 2010 at Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach, Calif. She was born in Yonkers, N.Y. Aug. 4, 1924, the daughter of the late James and Agnes (Clancy) Boyle. She was the wife of the late Gerald V. Munson.

Rosemary worked for NUSC in Newport, R.I., as an executive secretary for twenty years, retiring in 1984 and moving to Keene, N.Y. Rosemary enjoyed hiking the high peaks of the Adirondack Mountains, landscaping, traveling and crafting Christmas decorations. She also enjoyed spending the summers with all her relatives at their cabins in the Adirondacks.

Rosemary is survived by her son, Gerald V. Munson Jr., and his fiancée, Cynthia of Huntington Beach, California; two sisters, Margaret Drohan of Scarsdale, N.Y., and Ann Costello of Nanuet, N.Y.; and one brother, James Boyle of Sparkill, N.Y. Two sisters, Virginia Prendergast and Patricia Lawson, preceded her in death.

Meanwhile, poor old Uncle Ted is being ridiculed for using a product in California he uses all the time in his home state of Texas, where it doesn’t exactly seem to be decimating the deer herd.

Go figure.

I’ve got one thing to say to you, Ted: I bet the backstraps were worth the $1,750.

Tarry was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and his favorite: time at hunting camp with his sons and buddies. He also loved to cook and was a fan of NASCAR. Most of all he enjoyed his many friends and family and the time he spent with them.
