ELIZABETHTOWN — Several members of the Essex County Boar d of Supervisors applaud ed North Country Community College for no incr eases in the amount the county would have to pay for its services.

The W ays and Means Committee passed the pr oposed $13,193,000 budget, with the county picking up the tab for $1,190,000 of that amount during the July 25 meeting.

The number has remained the same for the past two, if not three, years, according to Moriah supervisor and finance chairman Thomas Scozzafava.

“They have not asked for an increase again for the second, and I believe, thir d year in a r ow,” Scozzafava said. “I do not think that we can af ford not to have this college here. You are seeing the enr ollment of community colleges start to expand,

Adirondack Hardware in Keeseville will be hosting its 11th annual Energy Expo on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 5 and Aug. 6, starting at 8 a.m. both days.

Adirondack Hardware to host energy expo KEESEVILLE — For the 11th year, Adirondack Har dware will host its annual Ener gy Expo at their Keeseville site.

The expo, which started in 2001, will be held on Friday , Aug. 5, fr om 8 a.m. until 6 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 6, from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Roger Long of Adirondack Hardware said that the event is a chance for people to get a jump-start on their energy needs.

“A lot of people wait until the last second to buy things,” Long said. “We want to make a push for people to do pr e-season buys for heaters a nd s chedule t heir i nstallation a ppointments early. When you get that first really cold day, you do not want to be without heat.”

But as of July 21, theAdirondack Medical Center is no more.

Speaking before a cr owd of about 40 people Thursday afternoon, the hospital’s pr esident and CEO – Chandler Ralph – unveiled what’s been dubbed as “the new face of leading health car e” in the Adirondacks.

“I like the new brand,” Rabideau said. “AMC – now Adirondack Health – has been a tremendous part of our community and r eally does make Saranac Lake the capital of the Adirondacks.”

North Country Assemblywoman Janet Dupr ey was on hand and called the new brand a “warm, welcoming statement” to the Adirondack community.

“They’re her e to pr omote good health, they’re here to do preventive health, and they’re here certainly to make people better,” she said.

The announcement comes on the heels of another big step for health car e in the Adirondacks, as work began on a new broadband network that will link medical facilities acr oss northern New York.

he number of cars parked on our streets last Saturday was proof that our E-town Day Yard Sales were a huge success. People came from all over hunting bargains, and most went home with a car full of treasures.

The Chamber of Commerce made the Yard Sale map this year and 26 sellers took advantage of the advertising. The maps made it easy to find the sellers, but not necessarily a place to park. The E-town Thrift Shop did a booming business and the money will go to help the four area churches. The Thrift Shop is selling raffle tickets for a Sept 24th drawing. Stop by the shop for tickets.

E-town Day was HOT and the Chamber ’s free ice water on Court Street provided welcome relief. What was missing on Yard Sale Day were the food vendors. A quick cold soda, lemonade, cookie or hotdog would have hit the spot. Serious shopping makes for ravenous appetites, and Yard Sale Day is an opportunity for an enterprising person to make some money.

Despite the heat, the parade drew a big crowd. Three judges, Linda Wolf, Jeanne Frisbie and Laurie Cutting, chose the winning float. It was Egglefield Ford’s “A Day at the Beach” featuring the Egglefield grandkids (with adult supervision).

Granddad Denny said “The kids had a heck of a time building it and of course, riding on it.”

The brave folks from the Horace Nye Home deserve a round of applause for joining the parade with a float. Thank goodness they brought their beach umbrellas to shade them from the sun.

The Fire Dept did a Bang Up job with the fireworks, and after a weekend of sunshine, hot dogs, popcorn, music by E-town Express and glow sticks, most people went home tired, but happy.

Last summer Egglefield Ford celebrated its 100th Birthday and next Sunday, July 31, they will host an All Ford Car Show, featuring the North Country Mustang Club. The show is free and the old Mustangs should bring back memories for those of us who grew up in the 60s & 70s.

he people have spoken, and pretty loudly, too. The proposed municipal building went down by a margin more than ten times wider than last year's narrow defeat. I called the town supervisor, Dan Connell, to ask what he thought we might do next. "I don't know any option that we didn't look at," he said. "I don't know where we go from here."

One thing he's concerned about in the near term is the small fuel depot at the town shed, which the school has been using on a strictly temporary basis. The proposed building would have included a new, larger fueling facility. There are days when both schoolbuses and plowtrucks are out when the tank needs to be filled twice. "I don't know what the school, the fire department, and the town are going to do for fuel," Dan said. It's a pressing problem.

Also, we lose the unspent remainder of the more than $600,000 grant that the town got from the state to plan the building. Fortunately, we won't have to give back the $60,000 or so that we spent so far.

Looking a little ahead, Downtown Essex Day will be on Saturday, Aug. 6. Guitarist and singer Joan Crane will be on the porch at Pantouf, and foot passengers on the ferry ride for half price. Amish quilts will be for sale at St. John’s Church, for the benefit of ReNew. Construction crews are working on repairing sidewalks in downtown, and up at the sewage treatment plant controls and the final piping are getting installed. The plant is on schedule to start up on August 31, and immediately after start up crews will be out hooking up customers to the system. Existing septic tanks will be pumped out and crushed or filled in.

Lawns will be reseeded with a mix of grass seed and wet paper pulp which is sprayed onto bare surfaces. It's very effective, but may require watering now and then until the grass is established.

Giant hogweed sightings have died down locally, although last week I was driving through Charlotte, Vermont and saw a big one on the edge of a pasture.

ave you heard of cat scratch fever? This is actually a real disease, caused by infection of the Bartonella henselae virus, which is generally transmitted through humans by cat scratches or bites. If you experience swelling of a lymph node near the site of a scratch, accompanied by fatigue, fever, headaches, and/or loss of appetite, you may have been infected. Bartonella is most often spread by kittens, although adult cats can carry the disease - often without symptoms themselves. You can avoid possible transmission of the bacteria by avoiding "rough play" with your kitty, and not allowing them to lick any open wounds you may have. Most cases of Bartonella are resolved without treatment, but your doctor may prescribe antibiotics if your immune system is not strong or complications develop. Bartonella is generally transmitted between cats by flea bites - one more reason to use good flea prevention treatments in your pet!

The local fire deptartment is having a chicken and biscuit meal this week, and the Willsboro United Methodist Church is also have a chicken and biscuit meal on Aug. 3.

Charlie Lustig has once again put out a call for Host Families to take in foreign students that wish to come to the United States to study for a year. The Willsboro School system has been greatly enriched by have many of these students attend our school system and also share their culture.

A recent drive up to Willsboro from Essex on Route 22, the beautiful stone walls, the day lilies along the road side, the views of the lake, along with all of nature’s wild flowers is just a beautiful sight. I was most impressed as I attended the burial of Maurice MacDougal this past week. He was so passionate about the Ford Mustang cars and was a big part of a like group of owners of these great cars. They paid great tribute to Maurice as their cars made an impressive circle around the grave site area, his remains even came down in his own Ford Mustang.

Another interesting thing that happened this week was the unveiling of a beautiful diorama of the Clark Quarry that once was in full operation out on Ligonier Point area. This is a rich part of our local history; most of us really do not know much of its history. We no longer can have this excuse; just a trip to the Local Heritage Museum will give you a closer look at this part of our history. It can be viewed on Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m.; and Fridays and Sat-

It is worth remembering AuSable Chasm.

This year the Chasm also has a Mountain Bike Center at the Campground as well as The North Star Underground Railroad Museum and the Heritage Center.

Also available to us for the first time are the new paving stones near the new Keeseville Offices as well as the renovated JC Park. And even though the Garden Tour is over there are still many beautiful gardens that can be seen from sidewalks. The Keeseville Free Library has a copy of “A Thoroughly Wide Awake Little Village: A Walking Guide to Keeseville’s Historic District.”

It is well worth a look before wandering around Keeseville with a sharper eye for the details mentioned in the pamphlet.

Parking spots in front of the town hall have been restriped, making for one less spot but improving visibility when turning onto Main Street. APA at a crossroads C

hairman Curt Stiles’ decision to step down from his throne at the Adirondack Park Agency next month could be like cutting the head off the proverbial snake.

From our perspective, the ex-Marine turned Adirondack Council leader then APA chair has done little to bridge the deep divide that exists over how the agency enforces environmental standards here.

You’d have to go back to the late 1980s to find more malcontent with the APA than exists today. At that time, a commission appointed by then Gov. Mario Cuomo was proposing even harsher land use restrictions, but Cuomo eventually gave in to the will of the people.

Now, another Cuomo has the same opportunity with the soon-to-be-vacant chairmanship.

The question is, will the devil we get be worse than the devil we got?

Adirondack Park Local Government Review Board Chairman Fred Monroe has his reservations. Often an outspoken critic of Stiles during his four-year tenure, Monroe now says Stiles spent the last several months working with the Review Board to change some of the Agency’s iron-fisted procedures, like how it doles out exorbitant fines, even in cases involving a relatively minor violation; or how it fines those who voluntarily step forward or those who inherit pre-existing problems.

Stiles, to his credit, worked with the Review Board to draft new civil penalty guidelines that were adopted in April, Monroe pointed out.

More recently, Monroe said his board was in talks with Stiles to alter the Agency’s procedures so the economic impact of a project is taken into consideration during the approval process. Currently, Agency staff is only concerned with environmental factors, essentially ignoring the human equation of how a project might better the standard of living here.

Those talks will most likely stall when Stiles leaves on Aug. 12, Monroe fears.

Monroe also pointed out that Stiles is at least an Adirondack Park resident — the governor is not bound to appoint the same to the seat.

In fact, past chairs have been year-round residents from as far away as New York City — people chosen more for their polit-

ical connections then their interest in the region.

A decision like that would only pour gas on the fire.

While we are well aware that politics plays a part in these decisions, we believe the APA is at an important crossroads, and the governor could go a long way toward healing the mistrust by choosing the right individual for this position.

First and foremost, Cuomo needs to clear the Agency of special interest groups.

Just as a former leader of a pro-industry lobby group would most likely not be the best choice for APA chairman, neither is a former executive director of an environmental group.

The point made last fall by the Review Board that the APA Board of Commissioners is “stacked with leaders of environmental advocacy groups” is a valid one.

Adirondack people are not stupid. We see this infiltration as a systematic move to force a one-sided vision of land use in the Adirondacks, and the Agency’s interpretation of the APA Act under Stiles has been reflective of that.

Until that changes, there will be no balance on the board and the Agency will continue to be viewed as biased and self serving.

At the same time, the Agency — especially the chairman — needs to be accessible to the public. Disclosure and open media communication is key, something Stiles is not noted for.

Love him or hate him, these are precisely the points Essex farm owner and former Wall Street executive Sandy Lewis has made all along, that the Agency is needed, just not this Agency with Stiles as the lone-star general.

Had the state listened to Lewis, the Review Board, and the will of the Adirondack people, the APA would no doubt be a more effective agency for the environment and the people who live here.

It’s time for everyone to take a deep breath

C

an’t we just all get along? Apparently the answer to that question is no.

Over the past week (mind you — it’s not like I’ve been keeping a file on this stuff) there have been two local examples of people so bitterly and decisively going against each other that it makes me wonder if, indeed, we can’t all get along ever again.

In Crown Point, public hearings and meetings on the

by Keith Lobdell proposal to go from three elected assessors to one appointed assessor led to yelling, shouting, name-calling and worse. Once the vote was cast and the change made, even more was done by those against the change, including signs that were less than flattering about those who voted for the measure.

I remember something like this. When we were at the fair, my 4-year-old daughter wanted to ride. We told her no, because we were there to watch her sister sing. She got louder. We still said no. She got even louder. We still said no. No matter how loud she got, she was not going to get her way because we were doing something more important.

See where this is going? Probably not, and that’s why we’re here.

Now, I am not saying whose right or wrong in this. I’m for voters’ rights, but I’m also for saving money. I can see both sides of the coin.

It’s the lesson our mothers taught, “Let’s step back and look at this from both sides.” It seems, these days, that most people don’t.

Then there is Westport, which exploded into heated fervor over the municipal building vote.

Before I go on, it’s time for a behind-thescenes moment. I can tell you that I am confident in every single one of the articles that were written about this matter — editorials and columns aside. Most of these hearings happened on a Monday night heading into a Tuesday deadline. When that happens, we cover the meeting and what happens there. We do not have time to try to reach out to others.

What it comes down to is that if it was not written totally on one side, that side thought the article was misleading. That did not happen here.

Back to the subject, after the vote, the finger-pointing and mudslinging continued, with both sides calling out the other, people cheering in the face of the other side afterwards, and just a general lack of respect.

I remember this as well from my younger days. It’s called the, “nana-nanaphoo-phoo,” or the, “I’m rubber, your glue” effect.

Once again, something 4-year-olds do.

If we want to go back, we have the NFL labor mess, which has now come to an end. Some of the things that the players were saying about owners and the league’s commissioner, Roger Goodell, were just plain offensive. One player, James Harrison, called Goodell “the devil.” Is this the new diplomacy?

Then, you have D.C. and the battle on raising the debt ceiling, lowering the debt floor, adding on a debt garage, repairing the debt bathroom or whatever they need to do. Isn’t the fact that something has to be done enough to get both sides of the aisle off their perches and together, solving these problems in the best interest of the nation and the people who elected them?

This has even happened with the geese controversy in Saranac Lake. Name-calling and insults and a refusal to listen. Has it really gotten this bad?

It’s the same with the whole Sandy Lewis v. the APA saga. If you listen to the masses and the players, you would think that both sides were inept criminals who should never again see the light of day. Really?

And, if it can still get worse, we’re all in big trouble.

Volunteering is rewarding To the Editor: During the last seven weeks of the school year, I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Peru Primary School.

I worked with the childr en to help them improve their reading skills, and I trust that I made a dif ference. Working with the children in the second-grade classes was an absolute joy.

Thanks to Scott Osborne, Kelly Cr owley, Mrs. Lalonde, Mrs. Saywar d, Ms. Demo, Mrs. Cr owningshield and Mrs. Mullen for making it possible for me to have this great experience. The Peru Primary School is a vibrant and safe environment for our children to learn from outstanding teachers.

If you want to have a heartwarming experience, I highly recommend volunteering at a Primary School. I know that I'll be back at school in September.

Camping, Memorable, Inexpensive, Fun! Research around youth activities and their long-term impact reveal that camping is one of the most memorable experiences that a young person can have. For young campers, the great outdoors may introduce them to a variety of first time experiences.

For some, just getting

By Scot Hurlburt away from their laptop screen, television screen, Kindle, cell phone or iPod may seem a little unsettling at first and may be a new experience in and of itself.

There is something very human and familiar about a campfire and it’s dancing flames. The camping experience can become a family affair if properly orchestrated. Mom and dad should sit down and discuss what will be needed to go camping.

Certain rules should be written down so that everyone is in agreement about the rules. The first rule is around safety. Fires can only be started with the supervision of an adult; walk away from wild or domestic animals when encountered; never swim alone and all electronic devices must be left at home.

Make a list of the necessary clothing and discuss with the kids why planning for cold or wet weather is important. Planning the food is especially important and doesn’t need to be expensive.

Parents might be surprised that their children will be interested in knowing a

maple tree from an oak or the surprising number of naturally occurring plants that are edible, not to eat the plants but rather to identify and simply enjoy their existence. A trip to the local library will equip a parent with an elementary understanding of these topics and other natural world information.

During the day, children can explore nature replete with tadpoles, frogs and snakes. You might consider giving your child an inexpensive camera to encourage them to look at animals or bugs that they encounter but to leave what they encounter alone for others to enjoy. If you will be near a fishing spot, be sure to bring fishing poles.

Watch the joy on your child’s face when they catch a fish, even if it is just a small pumpkin seed. Be sure to release what you catch if you don’t plan to eat what you catch. Your children will understand that being in nature means that we all have a responsibility to save and preserve what we encounter in the natural world. When night falls upon your campsite, your children will experience something that may be very special to them or a little strange at first. They will notice that it is very quiet, the soft wet ground and large conifers are wonderful sound absorbers.

Your children may also notice that there seems to be many more stars than usual as there will be very little light pollution. As everyone is enjoying their s’mores or burnt marshmallows around the campfire, you may want to tell a story or two.

Contrary to the stories told in movies, children don’t like to be frightened right before bed. If you don’t want your children sleeping in your tent, tell funny stories not frightening ones.

Finally, camping offers a chance for you to be with your family and away from distractions. This exclusive time together is what makes camping so enjoyable and so memorable.

And it’s true — a cultural moment is ending.

Whether you’re a Jon Hochschartner J.K. Rowling fan Reporter or not, and I definitely am, she’s arguably one of the most universally beloved artists since, well, the Beatles.

Does that seem like an overstatement?

Her books have sold over 450 million copies as of June, and the resulting film adaptations, whatever their artistic merits, have netted a collective $6.4 billion as of mid-July. Even President Obama has declared himself a fan.

With this in mind, I’d like to briefly run down some of my favorite young adult fantasy books.

•“The Lord of the Rings” By J.R.R. Tolkien — What kind of list would this be without Tolkien? Obviously this is heretical, but I actually prefer Peter Jackson’s film versions. Tolkien’s prose is too filled with dry descriptions of long mountain journeys — first they went up the hill, then they went down the hill — for my taste.

•“The Hunger Games” By Suzanne Collins — Action packed, this story of rebelling colonies in a dystopic future hides deep political undertones. And with a strong female lead, it’s far less problematic from a feminist perspective than the contemporaneous Twilight series. I look forward to the film adaptations, the first of which is due out in the spring of 2012.

•“His Dark Materials” By Phillip Pullman — This trilogy, a non-believer ’s response to C.S. Lewis’ Narnia books, which are filled with Christian allusions, was my favorite childhood series. Rereading it today, I’m still bowled over by Pullman’s artistry. But the unfaithful and utterly disastrous film adaptation broke my heart.

•“Harry Potter” By J.K. Rowling — Always a contrarian, I was suspicious of the popularity of this wizarding story when it first arrived on American shores. But I was quickly won over by its earnest charm. Regardless of genre, if only one modern series survives the test of time, and is widely read in 100 years, it will be this one.

Our political leaders ar e playing chicken with our li ves and our chi ldren’s futur es, with each side trying to play the righteous party. In the end, when a deal is finally struck, they both smugly spin it as a major victory for their party and for the American people. In the end, I fear America will lose because their solution will not go far enough, nor be balanced enough to r eally solve the pr oblem. The solution will likely be just enough to claim victory and put yet another Band-Aid over an addiction to taxes and spending.

At this very moment, the political parties are raising funds, not to be applied to the debt but to pour dollars into their coffers to further their political agendas. Their visions for America ar e so one sided ther e is no place for the other viewpoint. As such they can’t see that America should be focused on solving the pr oblem and not on widening the divide between us.

Unless both parties come to theAmerican people, when this issue is resolved, and admit that they were forced to cave in on some of their str ongest demands in or der to achieve passage, America will not have a solution to this crisis. Both parties will need to lose for America to win and I fear neither side will let that happen.

Tax cap will require budget cuts in Lewis

LEWIS — The new statewide two-per cent tax cap will require budget cuts in Lewis.

That’s according to Supervisor David Blades at the town board meeting July 12.

“We’re going to have to be very fr ugal,” Blades said.

“It’s not going to be easy.”

The tax cap is set at two-

percent or the average of the national consumer price index (CPI), whichever is lower. The cap could be overriden by the town boar d by a two-thirds vote, an option Blades said Lewis would not take advantage of.

“Depending on whether salaries g o u p, w e’re g oing to have to cut accor dingly somewhere,” Blades said.

Councilperson James Monty said this might be unpopular.

“It’s a good deal for the taxpayers until services start to suffer and the roads aren’t starting to be maintained like people think they should be,” Monty said.

“Well, we don’t cut those types of services,” Blades said.

“If it comes to a point where we get down to the bare bones, sometimes some of those things ar e going to have to be looked at,” Monty said.

“Certain services are mandated,” Blades said. “Other services ar e not — such as your youth, your senior citizen, your library. I could go on and on.”

In other regular business: There have been complaints regarding the town playground, Blades said. People are making noise ther e after 10 p.m., when there’s a site curfew, leaving pr ophylactics on the ground, and misusing the sports equipment.

Fire response to Meadowmount causes concern

LEWIS — A representative fr om Meadowmount School of Music raised concerns over the Lewis Volunteer Fir e Department’s r esponse time at the town’s July 12 board meeting.

Councilman Charles Martin, first assistant fire chief, said the slow r esponse might have been the fault of the school’s alarm company, Mahoney Alarms.

Raymond Bazydlo, school property manager , agr eed this was a possibility.

“Any time I’ve ever

called, (fir efighters) ar e coming with their dinner plates with them,” Bazydlo said. “That day I was a little baffled.”

In the future, when Meadowmount’s alarm goes of f, Elizabethtown fir e department will automatically r espond unless called of f by the Lewis fir e department, Martin said.

A fire alarm was activated June 28 at 11:13 a.m. at the music school, accor ding to Bazydlo. There was no blaze, and he was unsur e what set the alarm off.

Martin added that Bazydlo should always call in an emergency himself, even if the school employs an alarm company.

Martin also suggested Meadowmount run a test in conjunction with the fire department to see how long it takes the alarm company to call in an alarm. Bazydlo said he was interested in doing that when the school wasn’t in session.

County starts to formalize first outdoor smoking policy for sites Hope to have plan in place by November

keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — While Essex County follows the state and national guidelines for indoor smoking prohibition, ther e is no policy governing smoking on the outdoors grounds.

At the July 25 W ays and Means

Committee meeting, Jessica Darney Buehler with the county’s Department of Public Health pr esented a preliminary look at a new policy to address those issues.

“We are working to come up with a policy that would suit Essex County the best,” Buehler said.

The department came to the board of supervisors last November and asked for the formation of a committee to look into the outdoor smoking policy, which included supervisors

Randy Pr eston of W ilmington and David Blades of Lewis.

Preston said that the committee has worked for compr omise in several areas while drafting the preliminary policy.

“Some people feel str ongly that there should be a total ban on all county pr operty,’ Pr eston said.

“What this shows is banning it in all areas except for designated areas on the grounds.”

Buehler said that the target for the

committee was to find designated areas at all county facilities and sites that were at least 100 feet away from the building.

“That was not possible at each site, so we tried to do the best that we could to get as close to the goal of 100-feet as we could,” Buehler said.

Blades said that he was impressed by the passion that Buehler br ought to the committee.

“Jessica is very passionate about this issue,” Blades said. “I give you

my complete r egard for what you have accomplished so far.”

Buehler said that the committee is waiting for responses about the preliminary plans before drafting a final proposal to pr esent to the boar d, hopefully in September.

“We want to try an incorporate this policy with the Great American Smoke Out on Nov . 17,” she said.

Television star John Walsh coming to play at Adirondack polo club

keith@denpubs.com WESTPORT — The man who became a national face for justice is scheduled to appear at the Ride to Remember benefit polo match next Saturday.

John Walsh, whose personal tragedy of losing a young son motivated him to start a national campaign against violent crimes and eventually led to the television show “America’s Most W anted,” is part of the Shamr ocks, a team fr om the Saratoga area that will be the competitors for the Adirondack Polo Club on Saturday, Aug. 6.

“He plays with the Saratoga group and (Adirondack Club pro) Matthew Fonseca i s g o o d f r i e n d s w i t h t h e p ro f e s s i o n a l with the Shamrocks, the team that John is on,” Lonnie Cross of the Adirondack Polo Club said.

The event, tabbed “A Ride to Remember,” i s a b attle f or t he L eslie C up a nd will benefit High Peaks Hospice and Palliative Care.

“There will be food and r efreshments on sale, and pr oceeds will go to benefit the High Peaks Hospice pr ograms,” Cross said.

Shakespeare returns to Ballard Park, heads for Middlebury

keith@denpubs.com WESTPORT — Not only will the actors in this year’s Shakespeare in the Park performance at Ballard Park get to perform outside, but they will also get to take their talents on the road.

The annual Shakespear e in the Park performance will take place at Ballar d Park in Westport on Friday , Aug. 5, and Satur day, Aug. 6, with the tr oupe also getting the chance to perform at the Middlebury T own Hall Theatre on Sunday, Aug. 14.

“It’s a very exciting new part of the show ,” Lindsay Pontius, who co-dir ects the W estport troupe along with Scott Gibbs, said. “I was recently hired as the education director at the Town Hall Theatre in Middlebury and we started a similar pr ogram for the first time ever over there.”

Pontius said that she wanted to bring the two programs together, and that they decided that for the first year, the established program would travel over to Middlebury.

“It will be a joint performance and it will

give the kids that come to the pr ogram in Westport t he c hance t o p erform u nder t he stage lights,” Pontius said.

The two groups will perform scenes from “Merchant,” and “The Tempest.”

“This is a great chance for our actors to interact with the actors over there through the rehearsals that we will have,” said Gibbs.

“We’ve gone fr om being next to the lake to having Shakespeare across the lake.”

Pontius said that she is pleased with the members of each cast, but felt that the local group was strong based on the nature of the play they were undertaking.

“This is a pretty tricky play,” she said. “it deals with topics like anti-semitism and it makes you think on dif ferent levels and makes the actors think, as well.”

Daniel Connell said that is the re sponse to rumors over the past week that the person interested in buying a parc el of land in Westport for use as a farm-r elated private membership club has backed out of the deal.

“We have r eceived no communications and we are continuing to process the permit application,” Connell said. “W e know that the rumors are out there, but we have had no contact from Rolling Hills that the project is not moving forward.”

The d eveloper, D ave M ann, ha s b een i n the pr ocess of pur chasing the W estport estate of former New York State Republican Party leader Alexander “Sandy” Treadwell, with numerous meetings and hearings concerning the Rolling Hills project at the town Planning Board level.

Development o f t he p roperty w ould b e limited to the 61.8 acres, with 37 new buildings, which together would contain 99 living units, including 33 cottage duplexes and a lar ge thr ee-wing “Manor House” with 10 units in each wing. The r emaining land, which is pr otected through easements held by the Nature Conservancy, would be left for farming.

Connell said that a meeting of the town Planning Boar d which was scheduled for Monday, Aug. 1, is still on.

“My understanding is that on Monday , the

permit may be issued for the pr oject by the Planning Board,” Connell said.

“I have hear d the r umors about the pr oject being dead, but that’s all I’ve hear d is rumors,” Planning Board Chairman Bill Johnston said.

Johnston said that he had exchanged emails with Mann’s attorney, Timothy Smith of Lake Placid, who said that things wer e still a go.

“I asked him if the deal was on and he said that yes, it was,” Johnston said. “We are going to go ahead and vote as planned at the Aug. 1 meeting and the attorney for the town is finalizing the permit and other documents that need to be in or der for the vote. They are still hoping to get the permit on Aug. 1.”

However, over the past week, r umors started to spr ead that some had been notified that the land sale was not going thr ough and that realtors were again starting to show the property to interested parties.

Essex cemetery access at issue

ESSEX — Volunteers who want to continue to maintain the County Home Cemetery in Whallonsburg are no longer allowed to do so.

That’s what V icki Dickerson, who has been leading the r estoration effort at the c e m e t e r y, s a i d a t t h e E s s e x C o u n t y F i nance, Tax Reduction and Mandate Relief committee meeting July 18.

Moriah Supervisor Thomas Scozzafava said he thought the town not only had a right to maintain the location, but a responsibility. County Attorney Dan Manning said he’d look into the issue.

There’s urgency to the issue, Essex Supervisor Sharon Boisen said, because the cleared vegetation will grow back.

“The r eason that they’ re k ind of anxious about getting this settled is so all of the work that they’ve done in the past year isn’t lost,” Boisen said.

Scozzafava said he had experience with this issue, as there were at least 13 abandoned cemeteries in his town.

Scozzafava said he thought towns have a statutory r esponsibility to maintain a cemetery that hasn’t been maintained in an over-14-year period.

“I don’t believe that the owner of the County (Home) pr operty has any legal right to keep people off of that cemetery,” Scozzafava said.

Dickerson said the cemetery had been taken over by brush and weeds before her volunteer group began to clear it in 2010

with the appr oval of the owner . Eventually, 378 markers were uncovered.

“Our next phase is to replace a flagpole t h a t h a d ro t t e d , ” D i c k e r s o n s a i d . “ We have been donated a $700 flag and flagpole.”

Dickerson also had planned to raise gravestones below gr ound level. But on July 12, the owner said volunteers wer e no longer allowed on the cemetery property. This was due to liability concerns, Dickerson said, which should be easy to allay.

Scozzafava agreed.

“If it’s a liability issue, then that should be very simple to r ectify, because they would fall under the town’s umbrella policy,” Scozzafava said.

The property has had a number of owners since it was originally sold by the county in what she believed was 1985, Dickerson said. Scozzafava said he was unsure whether it was legal for the county to sell the cemetery.

Dickerson said she would only want the county to consider an eminent domain purchase as a last resort, as she didn’t want to take someone’s pr operty away. Scozzafava said there would be no need to resort to an eminent domain purchase.

Dickerson has a family connection to the cemetery , and she mentioned she knew some of the people buried ther e.

Her par ents worked at the Essex County Home and Infirmary, which was located by the cemetery.

Results of USDA grant program sprout at Carriage House Garden Center

keith@denpubs.com WILLSBORO — When Mike and Chris McCauliffe started their gar dening program this year at the Carriage House Gar den Center in Willsboro in conjunction with the USDA, they had an idea what was going to happen.

The pr ogram, which planted identical gardens — one exposed to the elements and another enclosed in a high tunnell greenhouse — was to show which had a mor e positive effect on the growing process.

Mike said that the results matched his expectations.

“I did not expect to see this kind of discrepancy, though,” McCauliffe said about the high tunnell gar den pr oducing far mor e than the outdoor one. “I knew that there could be some difference, but we are already on our third harvest in the high tunnell. The outdoor bed just really came to life over the past 12-14 days.”

A high tunnel gr eenhouse allows for ventilation along the sides of the structure, with no power-generated ventilation.

The whole purpose behind the project is to find out what we can do to help expand the gr owing season in the North Country.”

The McCauliffe’s were one of four local sites — two in Essex County and two in Clinton County — to receive funding for the pr ogram through the USDA and administered by Cor-

nell Cooperative Extension.

“In the end, these er sults show ways that you can do more for your bottom line,” McCauliffe said.

McCauliffe also said that the pr ogram allows them to look into ways to produce more on less soil.

“We want to produce as much as we can on as little of land as we can her e at the Carriage House Garden Center,” he said. “This is a way to maximize the space that we have.”

St. Armand supervisor Joyce Morency agreed.

“Of course this is an expensive endeavor for both Essex County and Franklin County ,” Morency said. “There’s no way we should not support the college or think about stopping out support for it.”

Lewis Supervisor David Blades said that while he supports the funding, he would like to see NCCC be more visible.

“I do not think that they ar e doing enough to communicate with the other schools what

programs they of fer,” Blades said.

Essex Supervisor Shar on Boisen asked why the boar d needed to vote on the funding when the county budget was still m onths a way fr om b eing voted on.

“We are required to commit early because their fiscal year starts before ours does,” County Manager Daniel Palmer said.

Willsboro Supervisor Ed Hatch voiced the lone opinion against the funding.

“I’m going to vote no today,” Hatch said. “I don’t think that Essex County can afford a community college. I can re member when the college cost the county nothing.”

Edith, who was a school teacher in Westport, and an aunt, Doris Begor, who was a historian later in her life.

“Everyone else that we knew was going, too,” Sweatt said. “In a couple of the pictures that I have, you can see our neighbor standing by us or next to us, so either he came down with us or we went down with him.”

Now, 82 years later , Sweatt is pr eparing to take that drive again, this time from Lewis to Cr own Point, to see the dedication of a new bridge spanning the two states.

“I miss the old bridge, but it was unsafe,” Sweatt said.

Sweatt also plans on bringing a couple of item s that were also at the dedication.

“I have the dr ess that my aunt Doris wor e to the first

dedication,” she said. “I also have several hats, including the one that my mother wore to the dedication. I am hoping to take that hat and wear it there.”

Sweatt said that the dress is too worn out to be part of

her ensemble for the day, but that she wanted to take it with her.

The dedication cer emony for the new Champlain Bridge is being planned for October.

JASPER, Ga. — Anne Adams McCabe, 81, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 in Jasper, Ga. She was the beloved mother of Geoffrey F .

McCabe of Fredericksburg, V a., Meredith M. McCabe of Atlanta, Ga., Matthew W . McCabe of Saratoga Springs, Jacqueline McCabe Bauer of Jasper , Ga., Andrew J. McCabe of Middlebury , Vt., and John Clifford McCabe of Waddington.

Born on Jan. 8, 1930 in Flushing, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late John W. “Bud" and Helen Korth Adams. Anne earned her RN at the New Rochelle Hospital School of Nursing, earning the Honor for Best Bedside Nurse in her g raduating c lass. S he d edicated herself to that pr ofession throughout her life in New York at Elizabethtown Lewis Central School, and later at Sandy Pines in Tequesta, Fla. Her volunteerism mirr ored her life’s passions, serving on the Board of Dir ectors of the Depot Theater in Westport, and as a volunteer at Martin County Memorial Hospital and the Hobe Sound Chamber of Commerce.

Predeceased by br others John W. Adams, Byron K. Adams, her twin brother Anthony J. Adams, sister Joan Ellis, and is survived by sisters V irginia Benham of New York City, Mimi Geraghty of Wantagh, N.Y ., and Helen K. Allen of Tequesta, Fla., she is also survived by 15 grandchildr en, two gr eat-grandchildren and 31 nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held at 10 a.m.

Saturday, July 23, at Roper Funeral Home, followed by a Memorial Service at 1 1 a.m. Family and friends gather ed afterwar d at the W oodbridge Inn to celebrate her life.

WITHERBEE — George Vernum Jr ., 67, passed away on July 23, 201 1, at his home in Witherbee, after battling cancer for two years.

George was known for his hearty laugh, cheerful smile, and his gift for storytelling. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his son, George V ernum III and wife Molly of Reinholds, Pa.; and daughter, Marisa Gaddor and husband Joseph of Mineville.

George had thr ee special granddaughters that lost their grandfather at too tender of an age, Bella and Petra V ernum and Hannah Gaddor.

A berry good season O

ver the course of the past week, I’ve spent a fair bit of time in both the woods, and in the open fields. In this timeframe, I’ve also knocked of f a few of the smaller peaks, and visited several rivers and lakes as well.

Despite the variety of terrain I’ve encountere d, and the remoteness of my travels; the locations have consistently featured a most common denominator , berries and mor e berries! It appears to have been a very lush year , and the berries are large, juicy and plentiful.

The annual Adirondack berry-picking season is now at full peak. Blueberries can be found fr om the r oadsides to the mountaintops, and fr om the lakeshor es to the riverbanks. Raspberries and blackberries are most evident along the streams, in the forest edges and in the open fields.

Nearly every local r esident has a favorite berry patch, which they often cloak with a similar degree of secrecy reserved for places such as a special br ook tr out pond, or a productive deer run. Berry pickers ar e typically a solitary group, and they like to do their picking, unfettered from the intrusions of others.

Despite the type of berry, there is a most common denominator among this year ’s cr op. The berries ar e plentiful, sweet and r eadily available. This season’s extraor dinary crop is likely due to the combination of a very wet spring, and a warm and sunny summer.

Judging by the attendant wildlife, which ranges fr om black bears to coyote to bir ds and squirr els, the berry cr op is providing a natural bonanza for a wide variety of species.

Wild berries of fer a low calorie, high ener gy, all natural treat that is sweet, tasty and high in a variety of vitamins, fiber and antioxidants. Discovering and harvesting the cr op is also a healthy, enjoyable and interesting activity. It is also a pursuit that satisfies an innate craving to unlock the hunter/gatherer instinct in all of us. It is also a great family activity, especially with small children, who are the most appropriately sized of all, for the pursuit.
