ELIZABETHTOWN — The Elizabethtown Community Hospital Auxiliary is making plans for its seventh annual Dinner@ 8 fun draiser.

Dinner@8 is a way of raising funds by involving community members to be part of the overall fundraising event through a series of private parties, held acr oss the region.

Each year , the auxiliary accepts “hosts” for its Dinner@ 8 parties. Essentially, a “host” is a person or family that is willing to have a party — it could be dinner for 4, a BBQ with co-workers, or an all-out bash for 100. The host simply agrees to have a party and supplies their list of invitees to the auxiliary.

The auxiliary sends out the invitations to the host’s party; and includes basic information about of fering a donation to the hospital auxiliary.

According to Laura SellsDoyle, auxiliary pr esident, each party takes place, with no intrusion from anyone — nobody solicits funds during the parties. “It’s simply

Bashaw said that currently the squad is staf fed by one full-time, paid employee and a full r oster of volunteers.

n June our quiet streets and empty restaurants begin to fill up. Along with the buzz of black flies, we also hear the roar of motorcycles. The Adirondacks draw people from the far corners of the earth, and one of the most diverse places is just a few miles from Elizabethtown, at the foot of Mt .Discovery, the Meadowmount School of Music.

For over 70 years, since 1942, Meadowmount (AKA Glamians) has been part of the rhythm of E’town summers. The school has provided many teens a summer job, and this year the school hired 30 area residents to take care of the grounds, buildings and laundry.

Debbie Spaulding, (former owner of D&B’s Restaurant) is running the Meadowmount kitchen, which feeds 223 students and 13 faculty members, three times a day, for seven weeks.

The students range from 7 years old to their mid 20s. We see them searching the aisles of Grand Union for international food, or devouring ice cream at Stewart’s. The tell tale rash on left side of the chin is evidence of the five-plus hours of practicing these stu-

Besides three concerts a week from July 3 to Aug. 10, every Sunday, Wednesday and Friday at 7:30 p.m., you can also catch Meadowmount music at the Hospital’s “Dinner@8” Party and other local fundraisers.

We also have the Windsor Park concerts organized by Councilman Joe Martin. On July 7, at 7 p.m., the Wyant Band will be playing at the E’town bandstand, and features our very own Joe Wyant, Dan Mousseau, Dave Wyant, Warren Gallic, Susan Hughes and Bud Egglefield.

On Friday, July 15, the popular E-town Express will play at the Block Party in the Golf Course pavilion. Other music hot spots are the Cobble Hill Inn on Saturday night and live music on Friday nights in the Deer’s Head Pub. “Piano by Nature” starts its season on Labor Day weekend at the Hand House, featuring Benjamin Coelho, Bassoonist and Rose Chancler on the piano.

A member of the carrot family, it resembles the native cow parsnip but is much larger. It’s a native of the Caucasus region of Asia, and was introduced in the U.S. as a garden ornamental. It grows in disturbed areas, near waterways and along roads. It will crowd out other plants, but the main problem is its sap, which destroys the skin’s ability to block the sun’s ultraviolet light.

Third degree burns can result, leaving painful blisters and purple or black scars.

Temporary or permanent blindness occurs if it gets in your eyes. Hogweed grows for four or five years before flowering in early summer, and then the plant dies. Clipping off the flower heads before seed formation will keep it from spreading, but eye protection is required and all parts of the plant are capable of doing harm. DEC is most interested in controlling this plant; give them a call if you see it.

Combining these facilities in one building makes sense, but is certainly an imposing prospect. You'll see the number of $7 million on the referendum, which the committee put forward on the advice of bond counsel. But keep in mind that as soon as they voted on that number, the town board immediately also passed a resolution not to go over $6 million in the amount that they actually bond for.

Plus, they've already got the $600,000 grant from the state. So they've put in place a firm tripwire that will stop the project cold if the cost to taxpayers is more than $6 million, and at the same time they are resolved to do as much as possible to keep costs as far below that number as they can.

This a very important decision that will impact the whole community, so it should be made with maximum participation by all. Don't assume that everyone else can make it for you. Please, please come out and vote on July 19. We have to do this together.

This is a group of four local women who specialize in harmonies and “roots” music. The event is free.

The big news of the week concerns another noxious invasive plant called giant hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum). Last week I discussed wild parsnip, dangerous because of its toxic sap, but giant hogweed is worse.

An individual plant was found growing on Main Street near the ferry dock, and the Department of Environmental Conservation was called to get rid of it. Giant hogweed can

t's surprising that turnout for the recent public information meetings on the proposed municipal building was less than for similar meetings on projects before the planning board, such as the Rolling Hills development and the piano studio planned for the former Hamilton Funeral Home building. Does this mean people have lost interest? Or does it mean they've made up their minds? Or neither? Or both?

Not that turnout was small—about 30 people at the first meeting, according to those present, and about 20 people by my count at the second. About medium, I'd say.

Hopefully, though, the vote itself— which takes place on Tuesday, July 19 from noon to 8 p.m. at the town hall— will draw a heavy turnout. This project represents the last major stage in upgrading our aging infrastructure. We've taken care of sewage and water, and now we face crumbling and inadequate facilities for our school buses, town offices and vehicles, and fire and ambulance services.

he summer is rolling right along, The Heritage Museum just opened for the 2011 season this past Sunday. The new exhibit is a wonderful reflection back in time as to the style of clothing, quilts, household items that were very common in the 1800s and early 1900s, this exhibit all comes out of the Clark family collection that had the homestead on the Point. Hopeful that many will stop in for a look, they are open on Wednesdays 1 to 4 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., it’s a real treat.

The summer youth program started this past week and runs daily for six weeks.

Noblewood beach is now open for public swimming in the afternoons. The summer reading program has also started at the Paine Library; along with the Friday story time for the younger children. The Annual Library Meeting will be held on Thurs. July 14 at 3:30 p.m. with Eli Schwartzberg talking about his project of converting the old school into senior housing. Another interesting Heritage Society program will be held on Friday, July 15, at the Visitor ’s Center with Vickie Dickerson and Norma Goff sharing the work in progress at the

Old Essex County Home Cemetery starting at 9 a.m. After they tell of the story the group is invited to go out to Whallonsburg to visit the cemetery.

Summer is a great time for families to get together. Karen Kneeland, Glenn Dickerson Hagaman, Carroll and Gloria Dickerson (from W.V.), and daughter Terry Dickerson of the U.S. Army stationed in Germany have all been visiting in Reber at the Dickerson Homestead. They also enjoyed the local members of the family joining them for a wonderful reunion. I am also enjoying my daughter Cindy and husband Tom at our camp for a couple of weeks.

want to thank the Chesterfield Fish and Game Club for the fast response to last week’s column. They sent me an email and updated the website with the missing times for the July 16 and 17th 3-D Bow Shot Benefit. Registration will be 7:30 am Saturday and Sunday and the awards will be presented at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Don’t forget spectators are welcome. Besides the main event they will have a spaghetti dinner, novelty shoots and onsite camping.

The library is running both its photography/pottery exhibition as well as the Children’s summer reading program on Mondays. I had a chance to stop in the library to see the exhibition and it is wonderful. I found several photographs and pottery pieces I am thinking of purchasing myself.

Youth Bureau trains summer camp leaders ELIZABETHTOWN — The Essex County Youth Bur eau held Municipal Training for Day Camp employees on June 28.

The training was attended by counselors and directors from Crown Point, Elizabethtown, Lewis, Jay, Black Brook, Keene, Minerva, Moriah, Newcomb, Ticonderoga and Westport. Counselors were trained in public health issues, planning camp activities, ages and stages, employee expectations, and day camp safety.

“It is important that we give these young people the tools they need to perform their job well,” Michael Mascarenas, Dir ector of Community Resources, said. “Our goal is to str ess how important their jobs ar e. The counselors are role models to the young people they spend their summers with and it is important to make each child’s camp experience as special as possible.

This year we trained 99 youth throughout the county in providing a safe, fun, summer camp. It will be the r esponsibility of those counselors to oversee over 1,000 youth expected thr oughout

Hickey advanced to the nationals held in San Diego following two pr evious rounds, first winning a student silver ADDY at the Rochester Advertising Federation Awards and a $500 scholarship. Hickey then resubmitted her entry at the district level in New York City where she won a gold.

student to r eceive fr om the American Advertising Federation and Andrea beat out thousands of students fr om across the country ,” Joseph Mayernik, pr esident of the Rochester Advertising Federation, said. “It’s a wonderful accomplishment for her , RIT, the Rochester Advertising Federation and the city of Rochester.”

Increasing the occupancy tax could help our economy

W

hat’s the big idea? Keeping our taxes down. That’s the big idea.

The Clinton County Legislatur e is in the p rocess o f d eciding w hether t o i ncrease the county occupancy tax fr om 3 to 4 percent, a suggestion brought up to legislators by the North Country Chamber of Commer ce. Is it a good idea? W e think so.

No one likes to see taxes go up, yet the cost of pr oviding services never goes down, and the pool from which to draw has r emained r elatively stagnant. So what is one possible solution to pr ovide our communities with the services they need without putting more of a pinch on our wallets? That’s right; you guessed it — the occupancy tax.

But, how does the occupancy tax help?

The way an occupancy or “bed” tax works is a certain percentage is built into the cost of r enting a r oom at a hotel or motel. That money is then given to the taxing jurisdiction, in this case, Clinton County, to be used toward promoting the area to tourists. W e know what you’r e thinking, “So? How does that help keep my taxes down?”

Well, it does in an indirect way. Think of it this way — by utilizing less of the money generated by property taxes, water and sewer taxes, and sales tax (another issue we’ll touch on in a bit) for pr omoting tourism, it puts those funds back in county cof fers to be used in other areas. And, it’s important to remember that promoting tourism her e is something that — and not to oversimplify it — is giving a little to get a lot.

According to County Legislator Harry McManus, the fishing tournaments that have been held locally this year to date have generated appr oximately $155,000 in the local economy. That’s not bad, given the concerns many have had over the lasting ef fects of this spring’s devastating flood. It’s also important to r ealize

that money would likely not have been generated without pr oper pr omotion, drawing people from across the border in Canada and from other places in and outside of New York State.

When tourists come to our region, they stay here, they shop her e, they eat her e, thereby helping all of us. And, if we’ve created enough of a mecca for them to do all that (which we feel we have especially with a str ong Canadian dollar), upping the bed tax by 1 percent really won’t be something to deter them from coming here or coming back again and again.

What about the sales tax issue? W ell, in our opinion, that would likely be the second best option for generating r evenue.

The only downside to increasing sales tax is that we who live here would bear the brunt of that hike. Sur e, we all know Canadian travelers who migrate south when the dollar is in their favor ar e the ones who spend a good chunk of money here. However, raising sales tax with the idea that they’d help raise the bulk of the money to help cover the costs of our municipal services is highly unlikely. It’s the rest of us who live her e and spend our hard-earned dollars here that would suffer in the scenario of a sales tax hike.

Nearly all bed tax revenue would come from visitors to the r egion, who use our services and infrastr ucture while they are here.

Bottom line? If the legislatur e is encouraged to move ahead with an occupancy tax hike, we don’t think it’d be the end of the world. In fact, it could help draw even more travelers through more promotion and ultimately strengthen our local economy.

Has our nation gone soft?

To the Valley News: When voters voted down Westport’s $7 million bond issue last year , they

asked themselves: can this tiny town safely and r ealistically af ford $6 to $7 million in debt for the next 25 years?

And they concluded no.

They r ealized that a debt this size would burden taxpayers and the town for years to come. It wouldn’t last for just one har d year, but for year , after year, after year. It would weigh on the ability of those on fixed and limited and middle incomes to continue to live in Westport. It would weigh on the ability of young families to buy homes and for those who own property to sell it. It would make W estport a less desirable place to live or do business.

Quite simply, voters decided that the negative impacts of this project on the town’s future outweighed its benefits.

It just didn’t make sense.

So voters said: come back with something we can afford!

Yet here we are again, with the same project, the same question, and the same answer.

Yes, Westport needs new municipal facilities - but facilities in scale with the town. Over the past year, a number of more modest and affordable proposals have been br ought to the town, ranging from a $1-1.5 million fire station to a $3.5 million municipal pr oject composed of two buildings sharing facilities. These pr oposals ar e similar in scale to the facilities constr ucted in

other neighboring small town s. They are real and feasible. They would capitalize on the ef ficiencies of modern modular steel and lower labor and site costs. Their constr uction could be staggered over several years. They would pr ovide the services our highway division, emer gency services and volunteer fir emen need without r unning the risk of crippling the town while trying to improve it.

Money is not the only issue. Many residents voted against this project because they feel strongly about keeping the town of fices right in the center of the community, in the hamlet itself. As Courtney Fair wr ote last year , and many others have expr essed, having offices in the hamlet supports the momentum of business in the town, and moving them would further hollow out the center of Westport. He said: “I believe the way forwar d for the Town of Westport is by working backward from a vision of the Future of Westport. For me, that vision has a well-maintained historic and vital Town Hall at its core.

One that speaks of the values and potential of its residents.”

Let’s do something we can af ford, that speaks of our community’s values.

Columbia’s faulty heat-shield causing disintegration on r e-entry in 2003, we continued to reach for the heavens to do what was hard and dangerous. The challenge of space was mor e than just bragging rights, it stretched our limits and as President Eisenhower designated in 1958 should be a benefit for all mankind.

While Tang was not a NASA creation, as many have come to believe, so many more life saving and useful products have come from our space exploration quest. Satellites and long distance communication, microchips and the personal computer, smoke detectors, water filtration, cordless tools, highway grooving, memory foam, scratch resistant lenses, cat scanners, insulation, and even invisible dental braces just to name a few.

Our country needs something if not space exploration, to focus our attention beyond the everyday issue we face to once again motivate our youth and capture our nation’s imagination. Cell phones, I-Pads and computer games may be captivating to some but not all. Space exploration was both a welcomed distraction during difficult times but also a necessary outlet that channeled our collective energies and future aspirations.

NASA isn’t going away but with no schedule for accomplishments and a soft plan for its future many are predicting a lost decade or more while we labor away on the day’s pressing issues and watch our political leaders fight and argue endlessly over every issue, bringing none it seems ever to a conclusion. With both sides dug in on ideological positions and no air of compromise in the discussions we merely Band-Aid the issues until it flairs up again in the future.

One can argue that the space race and exploration is a waste of tax dollars and manpower, but until we as a nation can come together on a purpose much larger than our own self interests and create a passion and optimism that allows us to see beyond life’s trials and troubles, I fear we’ll continue to be in the malaise that seems to hold us captive today.

ho do you trust?

Why is the mayor for the village of Tupper Lake issuing threats against the Adirondack Club & Resort? And what exactly does the mayor mean by “or else”? Is he going to take the developers’ lunch money, or perhaps it’s even crueler, like he won’t be their friend. He wouldn’t really threaten to actively try and sink a private economic opportunity that would provide for hundreds of jobs and opportunities in his own village ... would he?

Support for the project isn’t just about skiing. It’s about jobs, opportunities, pride and a sense of being and trust in that there’s a future that our community can look forward to. It’s about being able to be an entrepreneur, having economic and social security with the promise of jobs. It’s about a community and hundreds of volunteers that came together to re-open Big Tupper, with the hope that it could remain open permanently and provide opportunities for families and graduates that must now leave to find employment elsewhere.

Big Tupper is not financially viable as a stand-alone enterprise — the ACR is the vehicle to keep Big Tupper open.

Skiing is one aspect of what will be a four-season resort. Tupper Lake is the only place on the east coast that can offer amazing skiing, golfing on a Donald Ross designed course, boating on the most beautiful lake in the Adirondacks and canoeing/hiking opportunities that are unrivaled. We need people in Tupper Lake year-round, and we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to make that happen.

In any other town in America, the mayor and local officials would be the biggest cheerleaders for the opportu-

nity that is in front of us. I was very impressed to hear the success that Mayor Rabideau has had in Saranac Lake — attracting two new businesses, proactively creating the opportunity for greater economic development and employment opportunity for Village residents. Tupper Lake residents deserve the same proactive approach to our economy from our elected officials.

I have to admit that it caught me by surprise that the mayor’s statements were purportedly made with the consent and approval of the entire Board and all of the village residents. Not a lot of time has passed since I first read this article a few hours ago, but I have taken an informal poll of some of the village trustees and some of the local residents to ask them if the mayor spoke for them.

They said that he did not. I know that I am a business owner in the village and he did not speak for me. I have consulted with other business owners, he did not speak for them either. So, whom is he speaking for?

Why is he making misleading statements that there will not be skiing? He signed an agreement over two years ago with the developers acknowledging that the ski area would remain open to the public and that the developers wanted to provide incentives to reward good students, discounts to Franklin County residents and on and on ... The ACR developers have never backtracked from keeping skiing open, so why issue an ultimatum for something that is not in dispute?

Does the mayor understand that the ski area has been open with the consent of the developers? Does he understand that they cannot do any of the substantial work they want to do until the per-

mits have been issued, custom orders fabricated, infrastructure professionally installed? He claims that “It isn’t hard — a couple hundred thousand dollars” (to renovate the Ski Center). He hasn’t done his homework. One new ski lift alone costs almost $2 million and requires a twoyear lead-time to fabricate.

The cost doesn’t even include installation. You don’t just pick these up at Home Depot.

The renovations planned for the Ski Area will require $1520 million. The developers could have chosen the cheaper route. Which would have involved closing the Ski Area for two to three years while renovations are made, but they consciously chose to spend more money to allow skiing to continue while the center is renovated.

If I were the ACR developers, I would consider refusing permission to continue using the mountain if the village continues to be so cavalier in their remarks; acting as though it’s a God-given right to ski there. It takes a lot of time, money and hard work to keep it open. ARISE cannot continue to ask volunteers to support something that is being threatened by our own political representatives.

Their passion is simply not going to be there, they are being beaten down by their own!

The issue is simple. If the Adirondack Club is issued a permit, skiing at Big Tupper will continue indefinitely. If it is not, skiing at Big Tupper will end permanently.

If the decision is up to the Chamber, and the village continues with these last-minute position changes and statements, perhaps the ski area should not open this year.

How’s that for an ultimatum?

GUESTVIEWPOINT Response to story To the Valley News: Statements made by Supervisor Merrihew as reported in the July 9 issue of the V alley News beg a response in order to set the er cord straight.

Mr. Merrihew attempts to impugn the integrity of one of the Elizabethtown Planning Board members, and by extension, the whole Planning Board, by suggesting that less scr utiny was applied to the development of the parking lot on Water Street than on the parking lot at Family Dollar. He states, “It’s the perception.

Is it factual? Who the hell knows?” This is ludicrous as he knows full well.

The Nov. 3, 2010 Planning Boar d minutes read: “Ms. Hatch stated she stopped in today to see Mr. Slycord [Zoning Enfor cement Officer].

She visited with Mr. Noel Merrihew before talking to Frank [Slycord]. She wanted to ask about the permits for the W ater Street project that is being worked on. Mr . Merrihew stated he did not think a permit was needed because ther e had been parking lot ther e in the past. It is the board opinion that it is a Planning Boar d issue and it should be discussed.”

A letter was then sent to Mr. Merrihew dated Nov. 1 1, 2010, and signed by Br uce Pushee, Chairman, and Evelyn Hatch, V ice Chairman, in which the Planning Board stated that we were “...concerned that pr oper pr ocedure was not followed in building the parking lot located immediately south of the [Water Street] structure [and] ... to move forward with such a project requires a Special Use Permit.”

We requested a meeting with Mr . Merrihew “...to address this matter along with the proper procedures relating to future projects that will require Planning Board participation.”

That meeting was held on Nov. 29, 2010, and as the sign-in sheet indicates, it was attended by Mr. Merrihew , myself, four Planning Boar d members, two Zoning Board members and the Zoning Enforcement Officer. It was at that meeting that Mr. Merrihew was asked to stop interfering with the permitting process and to allow the planning board to fulfìll its responsibilities

as set forth in our Land Use Law and Regulations. Mr. Merrihew informed us that this parking lot was not within our jurisdiction because it was not a commer cial parking lot. So the accusation that it was the planning board that exercised unethical or “double standards” is quite obviously misdirected given the facts as stated above. (Copies of both the Planning Board minutes and the letter are part of the public record and are on file at the Elizabethtown T own Hall.)

As to the accusation (May 17, 201 1 town board meeting) of a “false statement” made “on camera” at a public hearing by Mr . Pushee r egarding the pr oposed Woodruff Lane sewer project, it is simply not true. I have reviewed all the tapes of these hearings and have not found any “false statements” by him or any member of the Planning Board. I challenge Mr. Merrihew to show me wher e “on camera” these “false statements” were made. In hearing after hearing, many of us expressed our opinions and reasons for opposition to the location of the pr oposed plant. And they were just that: opinions, not “false statements.” In a democracy we should all be able to agr ee to disagree without the sting of r etaliation. The people decided against the project and it was soundly defeated.

To continue to dr edge up this subject by petty finger pointing is counterproductive and won’t make the fact that it failed go away . It is a fait accompli. Let’s get over it and move on.

The proper forum for discussion of personnel or appointments is in executive session. I would suggest in the future that the town board avail itself of this provision and thereby avoid exposing the town to this unbecoming and unprofessional behavior. Members of our town boar ds should be working together in channeling and directing our ef forts to pr omote the general welfàre of the entir e Elizabethtown community. The citizens of our town deserve no less.

Reaction to Anthony case is what’s really sickening

I

am changing the beginning to my column that was out on the web earlier this week to make one thing clear - I don’t care about the result.

The Casey Anthony case has no impact on my life. I personally don’t care if she is innocent, not guilty, guilty or whatever.

There are thousands of murder cases going on right now that have as much, if not more disby Keith Lobdell turbing circumstances than this one.

What upsets me is the media wrath that is attached to the case. It has never been un-biased and people based their opinion on that.

And yes, it does sicken me that there are now death threats towards jurors, lawyers, the judge and the person herself. That is just sad and those people should be brought up on conspiracy to commit murder charges.

When the morning shows all lead with, “Did Casey Anthony get away with murder,” and CNN is doing a “Justice for Caylee,” series, does that really sound like unbiased, fair and no side-choosing journalism?

Most major news organizations had Anthony already fitted for the chair and, what’s even more sad, they weren’t ashamed to let the viewer know that. The reporting on this case was so one-sided that there was no way someone watching the news alone could have an unbiased opinion.

Then there’s the reaction. I feel this shows the real tragedy in 21st Century society. Immediately, shows like Nancy Grace start a character assassination campaign against the jurors, smearing those who are the key component to the American justice system (remember, this is the same person who basically wanted the Duke lacrosse players strung up, then would not retract her stories when it came out that the players did nothing wrong and the prosecutor over the case was so inept he was disbarred).

One person said, “It proves that young and attractive people can get away with murder.” That is the statement of an uneducated person. The fact is that there never was enough of a case to convict anyone of murder in this situation. As the saying goes, you need three things to prove a murder: body, weapon and motive. In this case, you did not have any of those three things (partial body, no weapon and no solid motive other than, “just because”).

Another said on one of our Facebook walls, “she will have her ultimate judgement.” Now, while I am religious and believe that statement applies (for all, mind you), I look at the almost mob mentality that came along with the coverage of this case and think back in my studies to how many times it was the mobs that were responsible for violence against innocents.

As I say all these things, though, I know that there is only one man, one case, one white Ford Bronco, to blame.

If you ever get the chance, watch the documentary “June 17, 1994,” from ESPN Films. It shows you the exact second when our culture devolved into this courtroomobsessed, reality television, TMZ-driven mess. And it’s only gotten worse since.

Now, I will say that in the O.J. Simpson case, you had all three elements of proof needed but a lethal atmosphere in L.A. following the Rodney King verdict, which led to a jury decision in a case where Simpson was later found guilty in civil court and currently serves time for a crime where violence and weapons were used.

Back then, I was all for allowing cameras into the courtroom so we could see the justice process in action. Now, I’m going to do something you will never see Nancy Grace or these so-called news outlets do.

Admit I was wrong.

The Cornell E.V . Baker Resear ch Farm hosted an open house and farm tour July 7, taking t hose v isiting a round t he f arm a nd displaying several pr ojects that they ar e working on.

“Our basic focus is to do r esearch for education and support of northern New York agriculture,” Michael Davis, dir ector of the farm, said. “These studies can be helpful throughout the country, but we really focus on what we can do to impr ove agricultur e here.”

Grass as fuel Jerry Cherney , E.V . Baker Pr ofessor of Agriculture, talked about how he is working to find the right species of grass to turn into a biofuel.

“There are programs in this state that have started to help funding to look into burning grass pellets for fuel,” Cherney said. “The federal funding is almost all going into ethanol.”

Kevin Iungerman, who works with the grape crops at the farm, said that their studies ranged from which types of grapes grew best in the climate to how much of a harvest they could get each season.

“This is the fifth year at full cropping levels,” Iungerman said. “Our focus is trying to narrow in on what makes a good, er asonable

cropping load and then see how close we can get to that at the end of the season.”

Iungerman said that their r esearch has helped several wineries that have started to take hold in the area.

“In the North country , we ar e starting to see the development of small wineries,” he said. “If we are going to continue to see this

Love token found after missing for years WILLSBORO — A token of af fection that was given then thr own out by a jealous courter was r ecently found many years later.

It happened when Craig Jackson was out using his metal detector in Essex, and came acr oss the bracelet, which was inscribed with the name of Betty Covel.

“He said, do you know who that is,” Craig’s father, Ron, said. “I said that I knew exactly who that was. It was Polly Bliss’ mother.”

The Jacksons then showed the bracelet to the family, who in turn took it to Betty, who married John Pierce.

“It was fun to see it,” Pier ce said. “I recognized it as soon as they showed it to me.”

The bracelet was given to Pier ce by John Cross, who had dated her.

“I had went out with this boy a weekend befor e that, and the following weekend he had given me this bracelet,” Pierce said.

Following the r eception of the gift, John Pierce was not fond of the token, and took it upon himself to dispose of the bracelet.

“I figured that we would never find it again after that,” Betty said. “I am Left, the bracelet that was found with the insorry that John is not still her e, or I would show it to him and say, see, I got scription to Bett y Covel, now Pierce. Above, Pierce reunited with the bracelet. my bracelet back.”

ALS Raising HOPE tourney set for July 23 PORT KENT — For the second year, the Harmony Golf Course in Port Kent will host an event to help raise funds and awareness for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

The Second Annual ALS Raising Hope Golf & Auction to support r esearch for a cure will take place on Saturday, July 23, at the Port Kent Golf Course, with sponsorship fr om the course, Adirondack Har dware, Crickets, Airborne Speedway and Plattsburgh Distributing.

The tournament was started in 2010 by the Long family , whose patriar ch, Roger Sr., suffers from ALS. “We need to work together to stop accepting this diagnosis and do what we

can to change the cir cumstances,” he said in an earlier interview.

“We want it to be about everyone in the North Country who has dealt or has to deal with the disease,” Darlene Long said. “ In our area is a pocket of the country wher e ALS victim numbers ar e gr eater than the national norm.”

In the past nine years, over 30 area residents have been diagnosed with ALS, with only six still living. In addition, three highly suspect cases ar e waiting for a definitive diagnosis.

They r eported that at last year ’s event, with only local support and the attendance of 350 at the event, it was able to raise $35,000 towar ds ALS research. The organizers are hoping for

over 600 in attendance this year.

This year ’s guest will be Dr. Merit Cudkowics, lead doctor of Massachusetts General Hospital’s ALS Research Division will shar e hopeful news in ALS research during the midday break.

Items that will be part of the auction include an autographed and framed jersey of Phoenix Suns point guard Steve Nash, three autographed books by writer Dean Koontz and VIP tickets to a taping of “The Big Bang Theory,” in Burbank, Calif.

Polo returns to Westport .By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com WESTPORT — The roar of hoofs can again be hear d on the back roads of Westport.

The Adirondack Polo Club on Stevenson Road in W estport opened the 201 1 season with a charity match against the Sugarbush team from Vermont to Benefit the Ronald McDonald House in Burlington.

“This is our thir d year of play,” Lonnie Cr oss of the Adirondack Club said. “W e all have a passion for the sport of polo and there is a great camaraderie of players both on and off the field.”

Joining the club for the 2011 season is Matthew Fonseca, a professional fr om W indsor, England.

“This is a great location and Lonnie has done an excellent job,” Fonseca said. “This is a program in its infancy, but the infrastructure and the course are very good for being so new.”

Fonseca said that he has been impressed with the level of play that he has seen.

“It is a very competitive organization and ther e is good play and good horses,” Fonseca said.

“He is helping us work on our polo and the horses with their conditioning and training,” Cross said. “It is nice to bring a pr ofessional on and

Fonseca said that his other goal is to help bring mor e people into the sport locally.

“We want to always bring in new players and members,” he said. “Lessons and horses are available, and usually, right off with the first lesson, they are hooked.”

Westport set for municipal building vote July 19

By Colin Wells denpubs@denpubs.com WESTPORT — In two recent public information meetings, the Westport officials who have spent a decade planning the town’s proposed municipal building once again explained and defended their plan in front of concerned and often frustrated local citizens.

Westport residents will vote on the proposed pr oject on T uesday, July 19, fr om noon to 8 p.m. at the town hall. In a similar referendum last year, the plan was defeated by seven votes.

The two meetings, held at the town hall on June 27 and July 11, drew about 30 and 20 people, respectively. At both meetings, Town Supervisor Dan Connell wasted no time in addr essing the question of why this pr oposal was being put befor e the public again after being defeated the first time.

“After the vote last year,” Connell said, “we went back to squar e one, and we

brought on board some of the critics who said it could be done more cheaply. But as we incorporated all the things this building needs to have, we gradually ended up where we wer e befor e. In good conscience, we simply believe this is the best plan for the community.”

The plan would combine facilities for the town offices, the department of public works (DPW), the fir e department, and school bus maintenance in one building on the current site of the DPW. The buildings in which these facilities are presently located ar e old, over crowded, dilapidated, and at risk of being closed due to code violations, town officials have warned repeatedly.

Several of the r esidents who spoke skeptically of the plan at the recent meetings appeared to have accepted the need for new facilities, but questioned the price tag. On advice of bond counsel, the public vote will be for a $7 million bond issue, although the town boar d has r esolved to shut the project down if the bids and oth-

er projected costs require bonding of more than $6 million.

The town has alr eady r eceived a $600,000 grant from the state, fire district treasurer Gordon Decker explained, so the final bond amount could be reduced even further. “And if and when the voters approve the pr oject,” Decker said, “one of the first things the town will do is begin looking for more grants to further help reduce costs.” Overall, Mr. Decker estimated, the plan would result in a tax increase of about $1.50 per $1,000 of assessed value during the 25-year period of the bond issue.

“The total cost is a big concern to people,” Decker continued. “People are frustrated. We understand that and we absolutely share that concern, which is why we’ve done our best to keep costs down.

But at the same time, our community simply cannot go without these essential services. And by sharing facilities, we’re looking at significant savings for taxpayers as we go forward.”

Lake Placid Fourth of July parade, festivities a success

“Our July Fourth parade has grown considerably and we thank all the participants for making this such a r esounding success this year .

The weather certainly helped and we had huge crowds on Main Str eet this year,” commented Kathy Pfohl, Lake Placid CVB Director of Community Relations and Events and this year ’s parade organizer.

“Thanks to our sponsors and those who traveled such great distances to participate,” Pfohl added.

Several events contributed to the crowds lining Main Str eet for the parade.

Over the weekend Lake Placid played host to The Lake Placid Horse Show , I Love BBQ and Music Festival and the annual Set the Night to Music fireworks extravaganza.

Clinton C ommunity C ollege hosted the Clinton County Supreme Court's annual Naturalization Cer emony July 8, with friends and family of those taking the Oath of Naturalization with them in attendance.

The Hon. JohnA. Lahtinen presided over the ceremony, offering wor ds of congratulations and encouragements to the men and women who took the oath under sunny skies on the second floor terrace of the college overlooking Lake Champlain.

“I am a grandchild of immigrants who saw this land as a land of opportunity ,” said Lahtinen. “I’m a beneficiary of their legacy and you, like my grandpar ents, bring an infusion of vitality and vision that is important in keeping this a country that is always young at heart, a country that believes its best days are in the future and a country that will work har d to ensur e that.”

“It is an honor to addr ess you as fellow Americans,” he said.

Andrew L. Slack, a now former citizen of the United Kingdom, also came to the U.S. because of his job, first relocating from London to Washington, D.C., 2 3 years ago. Slack’s job eventually took him to Montreal, but he eventually came back across the border and settled down in Wilmington.

Now a U.S. citizen, Slack hopes his chances of finding gainful employment will increase.

“I should’ve done it a long time ago,” Slack said of becoming naturalized. “It’s just long overdue.”

Bridge clubs event slated SARANAC LAKE — On Saturday, July 23, the S aranac V illage a t W ill R ogers’ B ridge Club and other ar ea clubs will meet at W ill Rogers for a duplicate bridge unit game.

The Will Rogers Bridge Club was formed in November 2009. They curr ently have had over 70 participants of all levels, who play duplicate bridge on Friday afternoons.

Potter said that he is hoping all veterans in the community will use the site as a resource.

“We are available for as many folks as possible who want to come in and enr oll in our programs,” Potter said. “W e have been told that there was about 4,500 veterans in the TriLakes region, and to pr ovide care in a place like Saranac Lake gives these veterans access to a place that is more attainable for them.”

Previously, veterans would have to use centers like the one that recently moved from the Elizabethtown Community Hospital to the former New York State Police barracks in Westport.

SARANAC LAKE — Historic Saranac Lake is pr eparing for the visit of Patricia Reiss Brooks on July 20.

Brooks, the author of Mountain Shadows, will head a walking tour starting at the Saranac Laboratory Museum, 89 Chur ch St., Saranac Lake at 10:30 a.m. The free event includes an inside look of the Morse Cure Cottage on Shepard St. that is just like the cottage where the characters in Mountain Shadows play out their lives. The walk will continue on to the Cure Cottage Museum on Helen Hill.

The walk will be followed by a br own bag lunch at the Saranac Laboratory , wher e Brooks will talk about gathering information for the creation of Mountain Shadows and will include glimpses into the life in the area in the twenties. In case of rain, just the chat with the author and booking signing will start at noon at the Saranac Laboratory, 89 Church St. provided in the local facility. Some of the doctors her e in the facility in the metr opolitan area will be available for local use.”

Opening the clinic took longer than expected, but Potter said the extra time was worth it.

“You’ve got to make sur e all your T’s ar e crossed and I’s ar e dotted,” he said. “It’s a good pr ocess because it makes sur e we’r e spending taxpayer dollars in the most appropriate way and that we’r e maximizing the healthcare we provide. It looks really good.”

North Country Congr essman Bill Owens helped local of ficials and VA representatives navigate some of the r ed tape involved with opening a new facility.

“Obviously we worked very har d to get a clinic in Saranac Lake,” he said. “As a veteran and somebody who has Fort Drum in their district, I want to make sure veterans get the best potential healthcar e that we can pr ovide.”

Potter expects that an of ficial grand opening and ribbon cutting will occur in August.

That ceremony will feature elected officials and r epresentatives fr om Paul Smith’s College, which helped bring the clinic to Saranac Lake.

Officials with the W ild Center announced last week that the museum is hosting a benefit for Tupper Lake’s Flood Relief Fund from 6:30 to 10 p.m. July 16.

The Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce and local community action gr oup ARISE have also teamed up in r ecent weeks to host similar fundraisers.

Floodwaters fr om the Raquette River wreaked havoc on private and public properties thr oughout T upper Lake in April and May , leaving many r esidents and businesses with significant clean-up and repair costs.

July’s fundraiser will featur e Joe Ramsey, winner of the 2010 New England Elvis Festival. The Saratoga Springs native has been thrilling audiences with his Elvis impersonation show for nearly six years.

Tickets for the benefit cost $15 in advance and $20 at the door . They can be purchased online at www.wildcenter.org.

The evening will featu re raf fles, light fare, and r efreshments with all pr oceeds benefiting flood victims.

“Bill has advised me that we need somewher e ar ound 800 homes for a large state to qualify for IA assistance,” Douglas said in a an e-mail sent out July 5, following the regular county board meeting. “This is why we need to get the wor d out through you guys that people with damages should contact their local municipality , or County Emer gency Management office to fill out damage forms.”

During committee meetings July 11, D ouglas a gain s tated that people need to fill out the assistance applications.

“Again, we are encouraging individuals to get with their municipalities and put in a claim for services,” Douglas said. “I honestly feel that there were people waiting to hear back from their insurance companies and when they were denied, now they ar e panicking.

They need to apply so we can get out numbers up.”

Douglas said that FEMA was again coming to the r egion to inspect damages and that Gov. Andrew Cuomo is pr eparing an appeal.

“He and Owens are encouraged and we feel that we can get the numbers up,” Douglas said.

However, homes that are not classified as primary r esidences are not allowed as part of the count, which does take several lake-fr ont r esidences out of play, numbers-wise.

“It’s u nfortunate,” D ouglas said. “but that has been part of the guidelines for a while.”

What a weekend - events abound in the Adirondacks The annual E-Town Day celebration is set for Satur day, July 16, but there are plenty of activities that highlight the middle day of the month of July.

CFES receives grant from GE ESSEX — College For Every Student (CFES) is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded $3.8 million by the GE Foundation for its college access programs in six GE operating communities nationwide. The GE Foundation donation signifies its longterm commitment to ensuring college access for low-income students that has put thousands of underserved youth on the path to higher education.

Obituaries Edward David Rielly, 71 Aug. 1, 1939 - July 3, 2011 WESTPORT/PLATTSBURGH - Edwar d David Rielly, 71 of W estport and Plattsbur gh, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2011 in Hilton Head Island, S.C. Ed was born Aug. 1, 1939 in Plattsbur gh, N.Y. He grew up in Upper Jay, the son of Edward and Ethel (Prentiss) Rielly. He attended Ausable Valley High School, and graduated fr om Union College in 1961. He retired from his position as Resident Engineer for Region 1 at the NYS Department of Transportation in 1998.

He married Linda Howe of New Britain, Connecticut in 1967, and he and his family moved to their lakeside home in W estport in 1971, wher e they resided for over 30 years. He enjoyed being outdoor, playing tennis, downhill and cr oss-country skiing, piloting his small plane over the Champlain Valley, boating, his prized antique cars, and spending time with his friends and family.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Linda, now residing in Plattsburgh, his children Kimberly Rielly and her husband Kevin Boyle of W estport, Jennifer Rielly of Moriah and Alison Rielly and her longtime companion T ravis Bogart of Waddington; sisters Elaine Cosgr ove and Judy Salisbury, brother and sister-in-law Carl and Ora Rielly and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents.

Sheriff bags ace at Cobble

keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — It was a case wher e three people were happy to hear Essex County Sheriff Richard Cutting ask them to be witnesses.

It was at Cobble Hill Golf Course, where Don Ratliff, Steve Denton and Bucky Hathaway wer e all witnesses to the act — one that was perpetrated by the sheriff himself June 28.

The act being a hole-in-one on the par -3 seventh hole at the golf course, the shortest and one of the most exciting on the nine-hole layout.

Cutting nailed his ace during league play , and said that he tried something dif ferent when he got onto the tee box.

“I hit my pitching wedge — high shot, slight draw, hit just over the berm, a few feet of f the green, bounced left onto the gre en and rolled up and in,” Cutting said in r esponse to the event. ”I have been close before but due to hitting ir ons high, they don’t roll much.”

Cutting added that ther e was even mor e excitement on the hole.

“Bucky Hathaway had his shot hit behind the cup and draw back to a few feet,” he said. “After making the putt, he commented that it is not often that anyone gets a bir die on a par 3 and still loses the hole.”

Wells took the lead with five laps left in the 30-lap DIR Tcar Modified featur e and drove off to his first car eer win. Wells started on the pole in the G&GAuto Parts No. 76 and stayed in the lead through four restarts in the first 12 laps befor e Roy took over on lap 13. The former track champion quickly built a five car -length advantage befor e a fifth restart tightened the field after 20 laps were completed.

Suddenly on lap 22, W ells, working the bottom groove with Pat McGrail and Andy Heywood in tow, reached Roy’s door. On lap 25, he regained the lead entering turn thr ee as Roy faded and finally pitted for a new right rear tire.

“When the No. 90 passed me, I thought, ‘Now, I’m racing for second and more of the big guys ar e coming,’” said W ells. “Then, I was able to get back to him. Fiber artists work at Pendragon SARANAC LAKE — Fiber artist Annoel Krider will join ceramic artist and sculptor Peter Shr ope in Pendragon’s gallery fr om July 18 through Aug. 13.
