ACAP Head Start students get to dig around and learn about gardens

ELIZABETHTOWN — Children at the Adirondack Community Action Program’s, Inc., Head Start sites ended the school year with an opportunity to dig around in the garden.

ACAP Nutrition Program Coordinator Mor gan Gibson worked with each of the seven Head Start sites in the county to plant herbs and seeds.

“There’s a push everywhere for local food,” Gibson said. “We wanted to use that push as an educational experience for the kids.”

The pr ograms goal is to incorporate their produce into meals served at the Head Start sites and snack at early Head Start gr oup socializations.

“We want to connect all of the pieces by learning about the growing and the science and then using the food in the meals that the kids will have,” Gibson said. “They get top experience the whole pr ocess, start to finish.”

Gibson said that community volunteers have been instrumental in delivering supplies, assembling the beds and preparing the soil.

Throughout the summer , gardens will be maintained by s ite n utrition c oordinators, as well as early Head Start advocates and families.

When it came to the planting pr ocess, Gibson said that the children all enjoyed the process.

“They had so much fun and they loved playing around in the dirt,” Gibson said. “Some of them have not had that experience in the garden.”

ELIZABETHTOWN — The summer series of Concerts in the Park in Elizabethtown kicks off on Thursday, J uly 7, beginnin g at 7 p.m. with the sounds of the Wyant Band.

The Wyant Band, with Joe Wyant on keyboar d, Dan Mousseau on guitar , Dave Wyant on bass guitar , Warren Gallic on per cussion, Bud Egglefield on tr umpet, and Susan Hughes on vocals, will perform a wide variety of songs and styles.

Other concerts will include the July 15 block party at Cobble Hill Golf Course with E-town Express from 8 to 11 p.m., July 15; open mic night at 7 p.m., July 21; Flashback at 7 p.m. on July 28; and a band to be determined Aug. 4.

Anyways, on Thursday July 7th until the 29th the library will be hosting an exhibition and sale by photographer Russ Hartung and potter Erik Wilson with an opening reception on the 7th from 5:30 until 7:30 pm. All are welcome to attend.

The Library will be presenting the summer reading program for children “One World, Many Stories” in which participants will learn about a new country every week through stories, making crafts, learning traditions and eating native snacks from 10:30 am until 11:30 am Mondays from July 11th until August 15th. The countries to be covered include England, Spain, Peru, Jamaica, France and the Netherlands. The target age group is from five to ten yearolds. This reading programs are always very entertaining , fun and very meaningful so give it a shot!

Coming up will be the Garden Tour and I will have more soon. Have a great week everyone and stay safe and well.

Many things to mark in your calendar from the library. The recent booksale seemed quite a success. I know I’m now in the need for an additional bookcase in my house. Next time you are visiting the library be sure to look down as a new carpet was put down this past week.

Summer hours start for the library on July 5th which are Monday 10 am until noon and then 1 until 7pm, Tuesday and Thursday from 11am until 5pm and Wednesday and Friday from 10 am until noon and then 1 until 5pm.

Little bit of stupid trivia because I just thought of it and I have room in the column this week. Did you know that technically noon is 12:00 am and the switch to pm occurs at 12:01. So midnight is really 12:00 pm and the next minute becomes 12:01 am. Since I know and try to pay at-

ongratulations to this year's graduating class as they go out to make their way in the world. I felt like I had a personal stake in this year's seniors, since they are the first graduating class to include students I had the pleasure of working with in the ACAP After School Program. They were in sixth grade when the program started up way back when. As salutatorian Elizabeth Cusprinie said, this class is indeed an unparalleled group of young people. We wish them all the best of luck in their various endeavors.

And to them and everyone else, happy Fourth of July! The festivities begin with the parade at noon, starting at the Fairgrounds and ending up downtown. Those who wish to register should be at the Fairgrounds at 11 a.m. We all owe a big thank-you to Irwin and Sheila Borden, who have generously agreed to take on the big job of organizing the parade.

We should also acknowledge the extraordinary efforts of Jeff and Carol Schwoebel, who have worked so hard in years past at making the parade such a success. Thank you both

couples for stepping up on behalf of the community.

After the parade, don't miss the Ice Cream Social and Magic Show in Ballard Park, which is hosted each year by the Christopher Emmet Hallowell Fund and the Hallowell family. This is always a blast and lots of fun for kids like me.

On Friday, July 1, the Depot Theatre opens its season of premieres with Riffin' and Tappin', a two-hour musical extravaganza that's sure to get your toes a tingling. The show runs through July 17. Call 962-4449 or go to depottheatre.org for information and reservations.

Then on Thursday, July 7 at 5 p.m., the Westport Library will host its fabulous First View Party, where you can get a crack at the spectacular titles available during the book sale over the weekend (July 8, 9, 10 from 9-4).

After that, at 7 p.m., comedy juggler Stephen Gratto and Sons will appear in Ballard Park, with a free-for-all show that involves lots of audience participation.

ere’s the schedule for the 4th of July events in downtown Essex. Friday afternoon, organist Carol Williams will offer an artist’s workshop from one to two at the Essex Community Church. It's open to all and free of charge. On Friday evening at 7 p.m., she will give a concert, again at the Essex Community Church. Fireworks will go off around 9 p.m. from Begg’s Park. On Saturday morning, do a few stretches and jumping jacks, tie on your sneakers and join the adult fun run, known as the “Firecracker”, which leaves from the old fitness center at 8:30 a.m. A fun run for kids leaves from the ice cream shop at 9:15 a.m. Parents need to sign a waiver, so please arrive a bit early. At 10 a.m., still Saturday morning, there will be a patriotic hymn sing at St. John’s Episcopal Church. Members of the parade will line up at the corner of Blockhouse Road and Route 22 at 10 a.m., and at 11 a.m. the parade will begin. It will snake down the hill and through downtown to

School Street, then to Begg’s Park. At Begg’s, Essex firemen will be selling burgers, hot dogs and sausages, and there will be games for kids of all ages.

At 2 p.m. raft races commence by the town dock- check the town bulletin board for the rules. Finally, at three there will be a spelling bee at the town hall. There will be two competitions, one for those 11 and under, and those 12 and up.

The ReNew shop is open for business at the yellow school at the corner of Elm and Route 22. They are open every day except Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The Essex Inn is now serving lunch and dinner, and the Old Dock and Rudder Club are getting ready to open for the season.

The sewer project is on schedule, according to Tim Barber from the engineer ’s office. Pumps and controls will be installed this week in the building behind the library, and they are putting in equipment in the treatment tanks across from the fire house.

e congratulate the 21 graduates in the 2011 senior class that graduated this past weekend at WCS. The Valedictorian was Adam Robare and the Salutatorian was Atlas Manning, proudly some nearly 35 awards were handed out to the seniors. There were many family celebrations around town to show their pride in their family student ‘s accomplishment. It was also a big weekend for the WCS Alumni; the 50 year anniversary had several class members return as did the 60th year alumni. Each of these two groups gathered at the Sportsman Diner on Friday during the day and then was the honored guest at graduation. The annual Alumni Banquet Reunion was then held on Saturday evening at Crickets with around 110 or so alumni returning. Teresa Sayward was the Master of Ceremony and Levi Sayward was the Speaker; good time was had by all.

In the recent Father’s Day Fishing Derby one of our local teams did very well. The team of “Fish, Line & Sinker” consisting of Danny Sweatt, Chester Arthur Halen, Jacob Sweatt & Jason Sweatt placed 2nd in the Cold Water section of the derby. Chet brought in a 9.10 lb.

The United Methodist church honored one of their own this past Sunday, Ruth Young who has been a faithful choir member for many years. She now thinks she will have to cut back somewhat, but the church family wanted her to know of their appreciation and she is welcome to come anytime in the future to sing.

The Visitor’s Center is now open each day and there is still some need for a couple of more Volunteers (especially on Sat afternoons) give Janice Allen a call if interested 963-8912.

Sorry there was a delay in the opening of the Heritage Center Museum, watch for the new date; a great new exhibit.

Our sympathy is extended to the families of Dorothy Perkett and Ada Sharrow as these have been solid local citizens over the years and will be missed.

ECH golf tourney set ELIZABETHTOWN — Elizabethtown Community Hospital’s Annual Golf Tournament is taking place on Thursday, Aug. 11 at Craig Wood Golf Course in Lake Placid.

Comments from elected official are discrimination - period

ame-sex marriage has long been a matter of debate and whether you like it or not, in the State of New York, it’s now legal.

What doesn’t sit well with us is not whether or not gay couples can now enter the legal state of matrimony. It’s the bigoted comments of Clinton County Legislator Sam Trombley reportedly made during last week’s Clinton County Legislature meeting.

During last week’s meeting, Trombley was quoted as saying, "I'm surprised the health department has not come out against this because we are going to have an HIV epidemic if this passes," referring to same-sex marriage legislation.

marry another woman? Wow. Mr. Trombley, how ridiculous is that?

Apparently, very, because the following day Trombley reportedly stood behind his comments saying “This is my opinion, and if people do not agree, that's just the way it is."

Don’t get us wrong — we’re all for freedom of speech afforded by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It’s what gives us the right as journalists to do what we do. And, for those who have forgotten, here’s how the First Amendment reads: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

Freedom of speech may be a right, but for Pete’s sake, exercise a little intelligence if you’re going to open your mouth. Will the cases of HIV proportionally increase with the number of gay marriages?

No. Why? It’s simple.

Even if HIV was solely spread by homosexual intercourse, a little piece of paper saying two men or two women may be together until death do they part, will have no effect. Gay men and women will still have sex just as they have since the beginning of time. The right to now marry won’t change that.

And, since when has being monogamous with a partner — any partner — increased the likelihood of transmitting sexual diseases like HIV? Whether you’re in favor of gay marriage or not, or even for or against homosexuality in general, the flat out discrimination of any section of the population — especially from the perspective of a publically-elected official in a public forum where that person is representing hard-working taxpayers — is just that: discrimination.

Mr. Trombley, if you’re against homosexuality, that’s your prerogative.

But, when you publically degrade people you’ve sworn an oath to represent — yes, we’re sure there’s at least a few people in your jurisdiction who are gay — then you’ve done nothing but a disservice to them and shoved your

foot square into your mouth. Plain and simple.

When we asked people on our Facebook pages what they thought about Trombley's comments, responses included “Ignorance is the only word that comes to mind;” “He doesn't even know when to hold his tongue. That is a life skill two year olds have;” and “Sounds like it may be time for a new county legislator.”

Whether you agree with that last statement (and there are people on our own staff who would debate that suggestion), we have some words of advice for Mr. Trombley. Sam, when it comes to stating your opinion, we’re behind you 100 percent. When it comes to presenting your opinion as fact yet based on zero scientific evidence or common sense, you’re on your own.

Name bridge for veterans To the Valley News: June 6 marked the 67th anniversary date of history’s largest land invasion of the German Fortr ess Eur opa, marking the beginning of the end of Nazi tyranny on the European continent.

Our soldiers, sailors, airmen, Coast Guardsman wer e an integral part of that victory and our nation took immense pride in that success, yet it was some 58 years befor e those her oes wer e honor ed with their victory monument in our nation’s capital.

Many of those heroic Americans passed on befor e they would see their memorial and others today are too physically incapacitated to make the trip. Certainly not a prideful story.

Today, we people of the North Country have an opportunity to do what is right by petitioning those in authority — our r epresentatives — to please consider the following.

The new r eplacement bridge spanning Lake Champlain between our New York state and the state of Vermont is slated for reopening Oct. 9. W ith our nation involved in multiple wars and especially the ongoing Global W ar on T error, this event would signal a most appr opriate time to honor those who have served, sacrificed and pr otected ours and the world’s fr eedom over the centuries — the American veteran, men and women — by naming the new str ucture the V eteran’s Memorial Bridge.

This is a onetime, unique opportunity to show our gratitude to those to whom we owe so much.

Many/most of our Gr eatest Generation have passed on already, at the rate of 1,000 a day nationwide, the Korean War vets are in their 80s and others in their senior years, so time is of the essence.

We owe them our very existence and will never be able to fully repay these fellow Americans who have pr otected our nation over the centuries. Servicing our veteran community is a labor of love and respect. I ask for your help in this worthwhile endeavor . Communicate with your neighbors and your representatives — local, state and federal — to implement this worthwhile pr oposal. It’s the right thing to do!

The Derby was held as a fundraiser for the Fire Company's Community Fund, which we use to help support other community causes and local families in times of need.

Three-hundred-plus small, plastic ducks were launched into the river fro m the bridge in Wadhams and raced to the finish line, vying for the $250 first place prize. Alexander from page 6 Last year one of the major controversies in New York City and around the nation stemmed from the construction of a mosque near the site of the World Trader Towers. While the owners of the building were free to do as they wished with their building the public and political outcry was more than enough to finally sway their plans. What’s considered free to one person can easily be considered offensive or even criminal to another person, depending on your perspective gained from life experiences. Prior to 9/11 there would have been little opposition to the plan, but afterward attitudes changed.

Throughout history we continue to celebrate our freedom, but as a people we have always required terms to access its privileges. In the 1920’s the government outlawed the manufacture, sale, and transportation of liquor. It led to the first and only time an Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was repealed, which happened 13 years later. While President Lincoln freed the slaves in 1863 which gave them the right to vote few made it to the polls as whites found ways to limit their access to vote. In 1866 Congress passed a civil rights bill granting citizenship to anyone born in the US…… except Native Americans. It took until 1920 for women to earn the right to vote and it was 1924 before Native Americans were declared citizens and 1944 before they could vote in an open election.

Today what would seem common sense rights took years to accomplish and attitudes to change. Is it fear of the unknown, is it bias or is it simply that the next generAdirondack Country Candles, Northwaters and Langskib W ilderness Pr ogram, Shelle Bailey, and the Westport Country.

If history has proven anything it has been that new freedoms don’t get accepted by society with the same open arms that we profess to celebrate on the 4th. Something so offensive to many of us as burning the American flag, is a freedom we must all be willing to accept and defend. Let’s face it we all want control over our lives, actions and property. While your elected officials legislate what freedoms we can exercise and what we are not free to do, it’s our culture, over time, that resolves these inequities within our borders and seeks to provide a level playing field, but it does take time for these changes to take root.

Look back at how blacks were once treated or Japanese Americans during World War II. By today’s standards many may be appalled by those actions, but had you lived through that period first hand, you might have a different perspective.

So when you’re celebrating this July 4th or watching a magnificent fireworks display remember this, freedom is as much about your personal freedoms as it is about tolerance, understanding and respect for others who also long to be free. Life is so short and fleeting is it worth fighting and stressing out today over something that in a few short years may end up being considered common place? Let’s make certain the battles we wage are in the defense of freedom and not just the opposition to change.

Elizabethtown-Lewis seniors celebrate commencement ceremony johng@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — Donned in the traditional green and gold, 26 members of the class of 201 1 walked across the stage and accepted their diplomas during the 73rd commence ment of the Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School June 24.

Proud par ents filled the ELCS auditorium and cameras flashed as the graduates walked in two-by-two to the

sounds of “Pomp and Circumstance” expertly played by the ELCS Jazz Band.

The evening cer emony was capped by a pr esentation of flowers to each graduate from a special person in their lives, followed by awards and scholarships.

Prior to that, class valedictorian Seth Beaton and salutatorian Alex Andrade addressed the cr owd and fellow classmates.

Andrade was th e fi rst to speak, urging his classmates not to fear failure, and to fol-

Beaton encouraged his classmates to be who they want to be in life, not “what others demand of you.”

“Laugh. Sing. Cry . Be crazy. Be yourself. Don’t be afraid to have fun just because others would look at you strangely. You can’t look dignified w hen y ou’re h aving fun. What matters is your opinion of yourself, not the opinion of others,” Beaton said.

Beaton concluded by saying life is an adventure, and urged his classmates to approach it in that regard.

Keene Central class will succeed, grad says

K E E N E VA L L E Y — T h e Keene Central School class of 2011 enters the world with confidence.

That’s what valedictorian Kayla Hebert said at the June 25 graduation.

“In ninth grade, everyone writes a personal odyssey, our lives over the next 30 years,” Hebert said, adding that every story began with graduation, and now she was seeing that project become reality.

“After today, we all get to go off and start over and become whoever we want to be,” Hebert said. “Our lives to come will not include pr econceived notions or expectations.”

Some graduates were going to college, some wer e joining the workforce, some were joining the military , and some were moving away.

“Each of these directions entail similar qualities: responsibility, dedication, independence and passion,” she said.

“These attributes can be accredited to our time at Keene Central.”

She said the class of 2011 would move forward and succeed.

“We ar e pr epared for our next step in life, whatever it may be.”

Harry Fine, KCS dean of students and the commencement speaker, said the graduating class had r esponsibilities to the world.

“You have a r esponsibility to our nation and our history to continue the str uggles and live up to our Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, and Martin Luther King’s ‘I Have A Dr eam’ speech,” Fine said.

Students film Essex Inn history

ESSEX — Six Willsboro Central School students have completed a video project detailing the history of the Essex Inn, and the interviews are being used in a short documentary that will be featured at an upcoming public screening.

The oral history project was organized by College For Every Student, a non-profit organization that works to place students in colleges.

Latford, who moved to the area about five years ago, said he didn’t know much about Essex before getting involved in the project. The subject was chosen because Dalton and his wife had purchased the Inn about a year and a half ago. CFES is moving its national headquarters from Cornwall, Vt. to Essex, according to Dalton.

“We love the community ,” Dalton said. “W e love the area.”

Ultimately the students interviewed 10-12 individuals, including Morris Glen, Dalton said. The students’ r esearch brought them to the local courthouse to look at deeds.

Strong said the robbery connected to the Inn was the most interesting aspect of the pr oject for her. Fine-Lease said the ghost stories he hear d about the location captur ed his imagination.

The project took about four months, a ccording t o D alton.

During which time, Latfor d jokingly said they spent “a trillion” hours on it. His peers more r ealistically estimated they invested about 50-60 hours into the pr oject. They helped edit the film.

Class vi ce-president an d salutatorian Elizabeth Cusprinie deliver ed the welcome addr ess, and student council president and class valedictorian Liam Davis spoke for his classmates in bidding the school farewell. The school superintendent, Dr . John Gallagher, and the school principal, Mrs. Michele Friedman, delivered the awards, while boar d of education president Mrs. Alice LaRock joined Dr. Gallagher in the awarding of the diplomas.

"We are here today to celebrate the achievements of this u nparalleled g roup o f seniors who sit behind me," Cusprinie said. "They are great musicians, talented artists, g ifted a thletes, e xceptional actors, and incredible authors."

Going on to expr ess her thanks to "the par ents,

teachers, coaches, and administrators" who have been such a large part of the students' lives, she said in conclusion, "W e couldn’t have done it without you."

In his r emarks, Davis r ecounted how the idea of leaving school and striking out on his own had inspired fear in his younger years, and how that fear gradually changed to eagerness as he grew older.

Now that the prospect had actually arrived, he said, both emotions str uggled for dominance.

County occupancy tax continuation passes through hearing stage

keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — The path has been cleared for the Essex County Board of Supervisors to continue a 3 percent occupancy tax for three more years.

Only one member of the public commented during the June 27 public hearing on the topic, which was tagged as pr oposed Local Law No. 2 of 2011.

The tax took ef fect Jan. 1, 2000 and was continued in 2002, 2005 and 2008.

Margaret Bartley of the Elizabethtown Chamber of Commer ce commented on the

proposed local law , asking if mor e money from the occupancy tax could be funneled back to local chambers.

“While we realize that Lake Placid generates much of the bed tax money , the ability of the Lake Placid Chamber to pro mote businesses in other towns, such as ours, is limited,” Bartley said. “Having our website or an occasional public event listed on their website, has little effect on our businesses and is a poor r eturn for the money our lodging owners collect. As you prepare to extend the bed tax, I’d like you to consider giving $1,000 of bed tax money back to each town that collects the tax.”

County vice-chairman and North Elba Supervisor Roby Politi said that the county did not handle the occupancy tax money and that the Visitor ’s Bureau was responsible for that.

“The money goes dir ectly to the visitor ’s bureau for the distribution of the funds,” Politi said. “ Bartley said that she would get in touch with the Regional Of fice on Sustainable Tourism (ROOST), to which pr esident Jim McKenna said she would be welcomed.

“We should talk, because we do have programs in place,” McKenna said.

Moriah Supervisor T om Scozzafava said

that he was pleased with how the money was used.

“I think that the money is well-distributed for the marketing of the entir e county,” he said. “Mor e goes to places like Lake Placid because that is the spark plug for the county in terms of tourism.”

Chesterfield Supervisor Gerald Morr ow said that other counties are now duplicating what has happened in Essex County.

“Other counties that said that they would never have a bed tax are now following our lead b ecause t hey s ee h ow w ell i t w orks,” Morrow said.

Raccoon concerns raised at monthly Elizabethtown board meeting

ELIZABETHTOWN — Safety concerns stemming from possibly rabid raccoons living in an abandoned trailer on Water Street were raised at the June 21 Elizabethtown Town Board meeting.

Gay Olcott, who runs a daycare about 150 feet from the trailer, said she was concerned for the well being of her client’s childr en and herself.

“This is an accident waiting to happen,” Gay said, adding she had observed a fight between raccoons and a neighborhood cat.

Bernard Du so, o f E lizabethtown a nimal control, could kill the raccoons only as a private contractor, Town Supervisor Noel Merrihew said.

“Legally the town is not responsible or involved with the eradication of raccoons or skunks — any other animal besides dogs,” Merrihew said.

The supervisor said he would steer people

first to the departments of envir onmental conservation and public health.

“Does that mean the town is going to notify the public health?” Rick Olcott, Gay’s husband, asked.

“Only if you request it,” Merrihew said.

“Can I r equest that you notify public health?” Rick said.

“We are here to help, yes,” Merrihew said.

“Is that a yes?” Rick said.

“What would you like me to say?” Merrihew said.

“I’d like you to say ‘yes,’” Rick said.

Merrihew said he would have public health call the Olcotts.

Gay said she did not want Duso to shoot the raccoons.

“It’s too close to my daycare and it’s in the village limits,” she said. “Ther e should be some way they can be trapped humanely and disposed of.”

The abandoned pr operty wher e the raccoons live is unsightly, according to Gay.

Alcohol and Boating Don’t Mix As summer approaches, more Americans will be heading to the waterways for fun and to get some relief from the heat. More than 76 million people will enjoy boating this year - boaters need to be aware of the dangers associated with drinking alcohol while boating.

An estimated one-half of all accidents and fatalities that occur on the water are a result of alcohol impairment. Alcohol can impair a boater’s judgment, rational decision-making, balance, reaction time and vision. Intoxicated passengers are also at risk of falling overboard, which can result in hypothermia or drowning.

Drinking alcohol always has at least a mild dehydrating effect because alcohol is a diuretic drug. While on the water the risk of dehydration is heightened by exposure to the sun. Boating can also be fatiguing due to the combined stresses of sun exposure, boat vibrations, engine noise, and constant motion. Alcohol impairment combined with fatigue is a deadly combination.

So, keep yourself and your passengers safe on the water this summer by remembering the following guidelines: • Don’t drink alcohol and operate a boat.

• Take along plenty of non-alcoholic beverages and food. And remember, alcohol is an illegal drug for individuals under 21.

• Children under 12 years of age, on any vessel 65 feet or less in length must wear a US Coast Guard approved type I, II or III PFD, while underway.

• Keep an eye on the weather; check the forecast before you go, and check weather reports regularly.

• Always carry the necessary safety gear, and know how to use it.

• If you don’t know how to swim, learn.

• Take a boating safety course offered through local marinas, the U.S. Coast Guard - Auxiliary, the U.S. Power Squadrons or the American Red Cross.

Boat operators and passengers alike need to be aware of the hazards created by drinking alcohol while on the water. By staying sober, everyone on board will besafer.

New York State Law Clearly States: No one may operate a vessel on the waters of NYS while impaired or intoxicated either through the consumption of alcohol or other drugs. An operator with a blood alcohol level of 0.8 or higher is considered legally intoxicated. New York law prescribes heavy fines, the suspension operator privileges and possible imprisonment for violators.

LAKE PLACID — Fiftyfive graduates fr om Lake Placid High School June 24 were told to pursue things that they love by a man who did just that.

Andrew Lack, a Lake Placid native and curr ent CEO of Bloomber g multimedia gr oup, who was the first journalist to bring back video of the Russian raid on Afghanistan and later headed CBS News and Sony Music, told the students to seek after the things they love to do.

“As you lean into the next chapter of your life, think about what you love and then try to figure out a way to get paid for that,” Lack said. “At Sony , I had to pinch myself that I was getting paid to listen to music. You have to have the passionate curiosity, and if you have that wanting to know and the self-confidence th at c omes f rom i t, that will bring you success.”

“This has cr eated a class that is worthy of all of the recognition and praise that it has received,” McGreevy said. “We have all come together to become radiant as a class. These memories are

some of the best that I will ever have.”

Valedictorian Alec Marchuk gave a moving address to his classmates, as well as his grandfather , who suf fer ’s fr om Parkinson’s disease, saying that he has learned life lessons.

“I know that each person on this stage this evening already has the ability to achieve what they want in

this life,” Mar chuk said.

“Direct it towar d something that you love, or at least that makes you happy.

That is what has allowed my grandfather to be so compassionate, even in his suffering.”

CLINTONVILLE — The 119 students that graduated from AuSable V alley High School made their way in from the morning showers June 25 into the brightest, and final, moment of their high school careers.

Class valedictorian Alexandra Casey told her fellow students to fill their lives with things that would bring them fulfillment.

“Go out and live the life of your dr eams,” Casey said.

“We are now setting out on a journey that will last us the rest of our lives. Spend your life with things that bring you fulfillment and happiness.

Seek all of the little moments because they are truly the precious things in life.”

Casey also gave one other piece of advice she said learned in pr eparing for her address.

“Google is not so gr eat at giving worldly advice,” she

Shaun Sullivan r eceived his diploma as part of the June 25 cer emony, over 40 years after he had left school and enlisted to fight in the Vietnam War. “I never thought that I would have a diploma,” said Sullivan, who left high school after advancing from his freshman courses.

“It is a r eal honor to walk and graduate with this class of fine students.”

“Following your dreams may be the hardest thing that you can do,” Coolidge said.

“Why? Because it is so worth it. S o c hase t hem w ith e very ounce of energy that you have and commit 100 per cent of yourself.”

“Even if you have to go down the road less traveled to find something that you love, do not be afraid to discover your passion,” Gr eene said.

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Never give up.”

“I didn’t have to do anything,” Sullivan said.

“They got my information and then told me that I would be pr esented with a diploma.”

This was the second year that AVCS had participated in Operation Recogn ition, allowing certain veterans in New York State the chance to earn high school diplomas if they left school without graduating.

Junior Girl Scout grows through helping ALS-stricken grandfather Bliss family copes with ‘loss of independence’ for former BCI, Trooper

keith@denpubs.com WILLSBORO — Since October of last year, Alex Bliss has been at her grandfather’s side.

She will check his medicine, make sur e that he is comfortable and keep his spirits up.

That’s because her grandfather, Lawrence Bliss Jr ., a former New York State T rooper and member of the Bur eau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, Lou Gehrig's Disease), a pr ogressive neur odegenerative disease.

“It has changed my whole outlook on life,” Bliss said after receiving a community service award June 21 from her Girl Scout troop for the work she had done for the grandfather. “I had no idea what ALS was before he was diagnosed, and I had no idea what it could do to someone until I see him now.”

“I am just so pr oud of her,” Alex’s mother, Laura, and oldest of the thr ee Bliss children, said. “Nobody had to ask her to do any of what she has done, she just jumped right on it.”

Grange to host ‘Timbuctoo’ exhibit WHALLONSBURG — The “Dreaming of T imbuctoo” Exhibition will be on view at the Whallonsburg Grange Hall in the Champlain V alley fr om July 3-9.

When it pr emiered at the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake in 2001, “Dreaming of T imbuctoo” r evealed the little-known antebellum history involving black homesteaders granted land in the Adirondacks in the mid1840s—a step toward winning the vote for fr ee black New Yorkers. Thr ough this abolitionist “scheme of justice and benevolence”, 3,000 African American men fr om nearly every county in the state each received 40 acres of land. John and Mary Brown moved to the Adirondacks in 1848 to be a friend and neighbor to those who settled their land. One of the loosely knit communities came to be called “T imbuctoo”.

To help raise funds, the family is entering a team in the Walk to Defeat ALS in Burlington, Vt., on Sept. 25. Bliss-Hall is also serving as a trustee on the local ALS Hope Foundation.

“It has been heartbreaking to see what he has been thr ough,” she said. “He had been so independent a so self-sufficient. Now, he can’t even ride to mow the lawn, which used to be his pride and joy.”

“Our goal is to help him maintain as much independence as we can,” Sarah Bliss said.

“We got him an iPad for Father ’s Day so he can have access to things. He loves to r ead the newspaper, but he can’t turn the pages anymore.”

“The biggest thing is dealing with the dayto-day stuf f,” Laura Bliss said. “The things that should be simple — that’s a job within itself.”

However, they ar e all jobs that Alex has helped out with since the diagnosis.

“I have a love for him that I didn’t know was possible,” she said. “I love him mor e every day.”

Balzac ready to present self-written musical at Keene school

keith@denpubs.com UPPER JA Y — Sam Balzac started acting when his mother needed a “Tiny Tim.” In the 10 years that have followed, the 16year-old thespian has been in love with the stage, performing throughout the North Country and even working on a few of his own pieces.

On Saturday, July 16, Balzac will see the fulfillment of one of those works take to the stage, as the Book and Blanket Players will present, “Road to Dannemora,” at 7 p.m. at the Keene Central School.

“I am r eally excited to hear these songs be-

ing sung by someone other than myself,” Balzac said about the upcoming performance.

“I am looking forward to seeing the entire work on stage with all original pieces.”

Previously, “Road to Dannemora” had been produced thr ough his mother , Kathleen Recchia, but featured music that had already been written by others.

Balzac said that while he had ideas for his own songs in the piece, it was a class at Keene Central School that helped him bring those ideas to print.

“For a while, I thought that there was no way that I c ould c ompose a nything,” B alzac s aid.

“Last year, I took a music theory class at school and that was when I started to put stuf f down on paper.”

Balzac said that he also collaborated with Deb V anneman, who has conducted choral workshops in the area and hails from Mt. Laurel, N.J. for the songs.

“I had a couple of ideas, and the plan was for me to write a couple of the songs and she would work on the rest,” Balzac said. “She had things that kept coming up throughout, so, in the end, I ended up writing more than I had planned.”

The Book & Blanket Players, which is pr oduced by Recchia, is a week-long children’s theater workshop wher e the kids worked long days and perform a full musical at week’s end.

Westport pitches for building

keith@denpubs.com WESTPORT — Four municipal organizations came together to pitch their r easons for a new center in Westport during a June 27 informational meeting.

Officials fr om the T own of W estport, town Department of Public Works, the Westport Volunteer Fir e Department and W estport Central School Boar d of Education talked about their ideas behind a pr oposed vote to authorize the town to bond for $7 million for a new municipal community center, which would be built at the site of the current town DPW shed.

Town supervis or Da niel Connell said that while the bond was for $7 million, that would not be an allowable price tag for the building.

“We have already resolved as a board that if the price comes in over $6 million, we will not move forward,” Connell said. “As the elected officials of the town, we feel it’s our r esponsibility to look at all the options and put forth what we think is the best long-term pr oject for the town. Any way that you push the numbers, this is the least expensive option you can find.

There‘s no way we would put a pr oject out for $6 million if wee could do it for less.”

The municipal center would house the Westport town hall, town courts, DPW, a fueling station for all municipalities in W estport, and garage space for the school district, along with other spaces for kitchen and meeting rooms.

Each organization involved on the committee that has looked into the municipal center talked about their reasoning behind the move.

“Our concern is that the fir ehouse could be closed by inspection and we would have to come up with a garage facility,” Westport VFD treasurer Gor don Decker said. “Renovations are not r ealistic, and moving would sever ely harm our response times.”

“I know that ther e is a lot of contr oversy about the town hall being part of this,” Connell said. “In the end, it r emains cheaper for the town hall to be part of this than to rebuild this facility.”

‘If we were forced to shut down our garage, then we would be for ced to put out to bond at a very high cost and we would also have to put in our own fueling station,” said WCS Superin-

tendent Dr. John Gallagher . “Another thing is that all thr ee need a lift for their vehicles, so should all three entities buy a separate building and put up a lift.”

“For a long time, I have wanted to keep the town hall in the center of town,” councilman Michael “Ike” Tyler said. “As we ha ve gone through this pr ocess, for me, it’s a no-brainer .

For sentimental value, I would love to stay her e, but this building is in bad shape, folks.”

“We are not only going to save with what we are doing but we ar e going to save in the long run,” school boar d member Dwayne Stevens said. “With one building, you ar e heating and maintaining four walls. W ith thr ee buildings, you are heating and maintaining 12 walls.”

“I do not know what we would do in this town if something happened along the lines of what happened in Ausable,” acting DPW chairman Dennis “Denny” Westover said, r eferring to the recent closure of their town garage. “We have a violation issue here, and with our fuel, it is an inconvenience when all three entities are using it and it runs out up to three times a week in the winter . When the snow comes, you can imagine what we are thinking.”

“None of the buildings we are talking about now meet codes,” r esident and committee member George Maffey said. “We want a facility that is inviting and the facilities we have today are not inviting.”

The committee then took questions from those who attended the meeting, which ranged from questions about the figures presented, options if the proposition were to fail and whether or not the committee hadconsidered all options.

“I was looking at the notes fr om our first meeting, and I would say that we have done everything that we set out to do 10 years ago,” school board president Alice LaRock said.

Stevens added that he also was against the proposal at first, but had since changed his mind.

“It’s just a fact, we need to move on fr om these buildings,” Stevens said.

The committee will hold one more informational meeting on Monday, July 11 at 6 p.m. at the town hall. The vote on the pr oposed bond resolution will be held on Tuesday, July 19, from noon until 8 p.m. at the town hall.

A wilder side of the Adirondacks

T

he Fourth of July is considered the beginning of the Adirondack tourist season.

Although tourism is the region’s primary industry, many local residents rank the annual onslaught of nature seekers and leaf peepers, somewhere just below the winter ’s first heavy snow, and slightly above spring’s bug season.

While these observations are offered in jest, there are certain truths evidenced, especially when roads are clogged with cars traveling at a snail’s pace, or if a favorite swimming hole is filled with unfamiliar faces.

Such happenings happen, and when they do, I’m inclined to grin and bear it. After all, I’m beholden to tourist’s interests, and it may well be the only viable industry left in the park.

Some of my favorite escapes can be found along the untracked trails and secluded ponds of the Cranberry Lake region.

Other such retreats can be realized along remote stretches of the Raquette River, especially in the sections downriver from Tupper Lake.

However, there are wild and remote lands much closer to home. In fact, some may be even wilder. Fortunately, these lands continue to be bypassed by a vast majority of the traveling public.

In a rush to get from the busy streets of Lake George, to the Olympic Village of Lake Placid, most tourists drive right by Exit 29 of the Northway.

They miss out on the Blue Ridge Road, and the wonderful Blue Ridge Falls, as the route travels through the southern fringe of

‘It’s time’ for mixed martial arts in New York

W

hile Teresa Sayward is on the right side of this topic, it looks like fans of the fastest growing sport in the country will have to wait another year to see it in New York State.

According to the Associated Press, a bill to legalize mixed martial arts in New York was left at the feet of the Assembly at the end of its session, with “no plans to approve it.”

According to the report, opponents to bringing mixed martial arts to New York state that “damage to fighters appears underreported,” and that the sport of MMA is “a bad example for children.”

To that, I say, I let my kids watch all the time. I let them practice different submission holds on me.

First, I think that those who are opposed to the sport of MMA, which is championed mostly by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) — by the way, whose light heavyweight champ (Jon “Bones” Jones) is from Rochester — don’t know what it is.

What it is not is street fighting. It’s not a bloodsport and its not a barbarian fest.

That’s what Assembly Ways and Means Committee chair Herman Farrell believes, even going as far as to say that

They’ll miss an opportunity to discover the headwaters of the Hudson and the Raquette rivers, and the chance to visit a magnificent, Adirondack Great Camp by foot, bike or horse and wagon. Reservations are available from Santanoni Wagon Rides at 518-582-2360.

In passing, they forego a chance to take three easy hikes, which lead to three restored fire towers. They also miss out on opportunities to paddle or fish on dozens of remote lakes and ponds. Some of these waters have been in private hands for over a century, and were only recently opened to the public.

It is a rugged stretch of country, featuring a ghost town and a 150-year-old blast furnace, old mines and good times! The locals are friendly, but they are few, with a population of less than 450 year round residents.

They are far outnumbered by the resident black bear, whitetail deer and moose wandering on over 60,000 acres of surrounding wild forestlands, which cover about 40 percent of the town.

North Hudson is not too shabby either. It is home to the remarkable Elk Lake Lodge, which is tucked deep in the local forest, on the shores of a crystal clear lake and surrounded by soaring mountain peaks within

a 12,000 acre private preserve. Best of all, it is open to the public, for lodging and/or dinner. Reservations are required, at 518532-7616.

Newcomb is a great place to hike, paddle, fish or bike. The recently repaved Blue Ridge Road offers 17 miles of quiet, scenic, and especially lonely highway.

The route offers an ideal opportunity for road bikers looking for a safe, quiet, biking venue, far removed from the popular and crowded Route 73, just 20 miles to the north.

Newcomb is also home to the 15,000-acre Huntington Forest, a research forest owned by the State University of New York, College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

Currently operated by SUNY ESF, the Adirondack Interpretive Center offers a variety of interesting programs this summer, including the popular Huntington Lecture Series as well as four new series on fly fishing, working forests, luminaries in the Adirondacks, and films and philosophy.

Additionally, the AIC hosts daily and weekly nature-based programs ranging from interpretive trail walks to special programs.

The Newcomb area is a great area to visit, but please don’t spread the word too far, because there has to be someplace for locals to escape the summer ’s tourist invasion.

I am not a major fight fan, but I can

name all seven UFC champs (Dominick Cruz, Jose Aldo, Frankie Edgar, George St. Pierre, Anderson Silva, Jones and Cain Velasquez). None of those guys are even the most popular fighter in the sport, a title that goes to former professional wrestler Brock Lesnar, the former heavyweight champ.

As far as boxing goes, I think Manny Pacquiao holds a title, as does one of the Klitschko brothers. I’m not even sure how many titles there are.

You don’t get the draws at Madison Square Garden that you once did for boxing, because it is a dying sport. Also, boxing doesn’t want to come to MSG anymore. They go to the new Cowboy Stadium and Vegas for their biggest fights.

On the other hand, the UFC is begging to come to MSG. They want the center of the sports world to be able to host the best fighters in the world, and you do not find them in boxing anymore.

I called Sayward’s office, and a representative said that she would vote for the measure, if it were brought to a vote, which it wasn’t for the third straight year due to the influence Farrell has over the ways and means committee.

She was surr ounded by her loving family.

Dorothy was born onApril 10, 1915, in Willsboro, NY, the daughter of Harry and Edith ( Ellsworth ) Rand. She graduated fr om W illsboro High School and attended Plattsburgh Normal School. On December 31, 1935, she married Howard Perkett in Plattsburgh, NY. Howard predeceased her on June 22, 1984.

Mrs. Perkett is survived by her childr en June Anderson, Nancy Hatch and husband Edwar d , Linda Marcotte and husband Ralph, all of Willsboro, NY, Randy Perkett and wife Jan of Fort Myers, FL, Kathryn Bertrand and husband Brandon of Keeseville, NY , Cynthia Blanchard and husband Gary of Milton, VT , David Perkett and wife Jill of Auburn, Maine, Angie Walsh of Merrimack, NH and daughter -in-law Rosemary Perkett of S. Burlington, VT. She is also survived by 28 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was pr edeceased by her par ents, devoted Aunt Lucy Rand (Auntie), sister and br other-in-law Elsie and James Bowen, grandsons Scott Anderson and Justin Garvey, daughter-in-law Paula Perkett and sonin- law Ron Walsh.

A special thanks is expressed to the VNAnurses and care givers and Dr . Sokol who found their way into Dorothy’s heart. No better car e could have been given to her and her family.
