have been loving this great weather lately. So sorry to hear that the recent rains are still causing problems with mudslides for some residents. I really appreciate the lovely flowers in all the flower boxes on Main Street.

Saw a great turnout at the Pig and Swig.

Thanks to the Elks for putting on such a wonderful event. Also I was able to check out the library sale and managed to increase my need for another bookcase in my library.

And to keep myself honest with all the readers, yes I finished my yard completely before I started reading any of the books.

The Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH) have been restoring and renovating their home at 1745 Main St. and are planning an open house on Tuesday, June 28 from 4 to 6 p.m. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend to see this wonderful historic building as well as learn about the Heritage and what it does as well as see the ongoing exhibit “Places of the Spirit.” This exhibit is the work of four photographers showcasing many of the region’s most beautiful churches. The exhibit consists of more

than 25 large scale prints with captions. Special thank you to the Heritage’s Executive Director Steven Engelhart for this information.

There will be some food and refreshments as well. You can find the building directly across from TD Bank.

By the time you read this, the library sale should be winding down so now is the chance for some real bargain buys such as a dollar a bag. Next up the library will be preparing for the summer reading program.

The State theme this year is “One World, Many Stories.” I’m sure Mary Anne and staff will have a lot of great events tied in with this, offering our kids some wonderful opportunities for some reading fun this summer. Next week I will try to have a schedule of events for the program.

As I said with the nice weather I have been wandering around a lot lately, and I greatly appreciate all the time people have taken to making the yards beautiful as well as all the people who stop me and wish me well and checking with me about the progress on my own yard! I really do love my community.

his Friday, the June 24, a film will be shown at the Whallonsburg Grange called “Bloom,” which is about algae and its role in the declining quality of Lake Champlain. It starts at 7 p.m., there’s no charge, and a discussion will follow.

I need to make a small correction to last week’s column, in that Dianne Lansing spells her first name with two n’s, and not one, as I had it.

The weather has settled down enough for haymaking to get under way. My neighbor Holly French reports that they are filling their barns and the equipment is holding together nicely. I like the sound of the old square balers with their rhythmic chunk-slot, chunk-slot, chunk-slot. George Sayward, over on the old Friend Cross farm, has fenced in his pastures and now we can see Holstein heifers grazing across the road. Thirty years ago, when we first came to Reber, there were many more cows than people, but as dairy farming evolved into the super farms of today, cattle mostly disappeared around here. I’m glad to see them back.

burg graduates with honors from Westport Central, and her grandmother Audrey Hoskins is throwing a big party for her, complete with a rented tent. LeAnn has been interning at the Essex town hall and on Monday will assume the official duties of clerk to the town supervisor.

The state comptroller just released a recent audit of the town’s finances, and there is a lot of room for improvement. Past practices showed a distinct lack of good business sense and a casual attitude toward record keeping and oversight, which, as the audit states, can lead to abuse and fraud. One would hope that hasn’t happened here, but it is certainly possible. Supervisor Boisen has been working steadily since she took office to run the town by the book, and her efforts are beginning to pay off with improved record keeping and compliance with state laws. In my opinion, the audit should have been more comprehensive, to cover matters like the incomplete wall on Lake Street, and the management of the town’s many deteriorating properties. opefully you got your pamphlet in the mail about the two public information meetings coming up for the proposed municipal building. The first meeting is Monday, June 27, and the second is Monday, July 11. Both meetings will be at the town hall starting at 6 p.m. The vote itself is Tuesday, July 19, from noon to 8 p.m., also at the town hall.

This is obviously a big decision for our community. Having spent some time now around the town shed and the firehouse, I’ve seen firsthand how these old buildings desperately need to be replaced. The school bus garage is just as inadequate. And it makes sense to consolidate them in one structure to save on both construction and operating costs.

Here’s my take on where we stand right now. Seems to me that most people recognize the need for a new firehouse, school bus garage, and town shed. The biggest reservations about this project that I’ve heard consistently all along have always had to do with

illsboro life is still on the fast track, with many choices of things to do. There was a very impressive dedication service for the “Healing Garden” down at the end of the Memorial Cemetery on Saturday, June 18. This is developing into a peaceful garden area for persons to go and reflect on lost loved ones, especially those that have lost children. One of these days take a ride down and take a look, it is located on the side of the cemetery near the storage units.

This is the big school reunions weekend, the class celebrating 50 years since their graduation, are planning to get together and then they are the special guest of the current graduating class on the evening of June 24. The class of 1951 is celebrating their 60th year and have planned a couple of times together. This year the two people added to the Wall of Distinction are Evelyn Foley and Ken Coonrod, they will also be honored at the graduation ceremony. The Alumni Banquet will be held at Crickets on Saturday, June 25, starting at 3 p.m.

moving the town hall out of the village. As I understand the point these residents are making, it’s not about how many people actually do walk to the town hall as it is now, it’s about whether they can if they feel like it. It’s about how the community feels to them.

However you feel about all this, please attend these meetings. Ask questions, let your voice be heard, but please also try to keep an open mind. Whether the town hall is part of it or not, in my opinion it would be a real shame if this much-needed project goes down for that reason. It will cost us all a lot more money to put up these buildings separately. One way or another, though, it’s going to be done.

That much is certain.

The Paine Library had a used book sale this past weekend and will be hosting an exhibit of Patricia Reynolds paintings and Ben Rowe’s photography the week of June 27 to July 12, during regular Library hours. The Willsboro Heritage Center has its season’s opening on Sunday, June 26, at 7 p.m. with a chance to view the new summer exhibit. The town was really hopping with some 25 or more yard sales this past weekend, some great bargains.

GUESTVIEWPOINT A response to the Essex audit

E

ssex has joined a growing list of towns that have been audited recently. It seems pretty universal that the auditors aren’t happy with many small town’s bookkeeping. In our case there was no fraud, or malfeasance. Our town clerk failed to bill our neighboring town for some transfer site tickets and that was the only missing money. That was easily cured. The problems are accounting and reporting methods and procedures.

Our supervisor’s clerk had asked many times for the auditor’s office to come up and help her set up things differently, particularly for capital projects and the water billing, and they never had the time.

She asked them to recommend an accounting program, and was told they didn’t recommend any of them. The accounting was basically the same for 25 years and other audits never noticed the errors, and I admit there are some errors. I’m an engineer with no accounting training.

While I can check the math and see if everything balances, I couldn’t provide her any expertise in setting up proper reporting procedures.

The auditor said the Town Board never knew how much money the Sewer District owed the town. That is incorrect. Every time the Town Board approved a loan to the Sewer District, the Town

Board was told what that loan brought the total loan to.

When they voted for a drawdown, they were told what that would reduce the total to.

The auditor faulted us for cutting our 2009 appropriations by $400,000 during the 2009 year. The economy turned bad and we could see we were not going to reach our projected revenues. By cutting expenses, instead of a huge budget shortfall, we actually ended up with a $30,000 unexpended balance.

We had hoped to have a little larger unexpended balance to reduce the 2010 tax levy a little more in continued tough times. I don’t understand why the auditor considered that a bad thing.

While there are certainly needs for improvement in our books, there is also room for improvement in the auditor’s office and the auditing process as well. When a town asks for help, help needs to be provided. Our auditor huddled mostly with one person and they need to expand that.

I live 1 mile away and could have easily answered several questions that the auditor spent hours, if not days, researching if he had asked. I have talked to several Town Board members and they spent little time with the auditor. The report is also poorly worded and misleading. The auditor correctly criticizes the smallest error by us and then

makes several errors in his report.

The auditor correctly states that the Town Board audited the town justice and the town clerk yearly, but incorrectly states we failed to audit the tax collector. The town clerk and the tax collector are the same person so yes, she was audited. The county audits the tax collector each year as well since her final report to them must balance exactly.

The auditor also said we failed to audit the supervisor, supervisor’s clerk, and the code officer. The town clerk/tax collector and the town justice are the only offices that handle and record money and both are audited by the Town Board. There are no other transactions to audit other than those presently being audited.

The state wants towns to repay any interdepartmental loans each year. There are no state grants for “seed money” for planning. It is impossible to plan a project of any size, receive funding, get permits and start construction in one year. In the case of a sewer district, you can’t even form a district in one year. Where does the money come from to pay that loan back in one year? Infrastructure planning is a long term investment for a town and should be treated as such. New York needs to look closer at this requirement or help towns financially with

I believe that the state must provide additional training for supervisors, and other Town Board members, other than the traditional three day “How to be a supervisor school.” Accounting training — either through the Community Colleges or directly from the state — should be a minimum. I’m afraid the days of a $20,000 a year bookkeeper are gone. Bookkeepers should be provided extensive accounting training and then must be fairly paid for those skills when acquired. The town clerk/tax collectors is also in the same situation. To provide the accounting procedures, methods and reports now required, I’m afraid the price of local government will be going up.

The road ahead isn’t as clear or defined as it was in the past, or at least seemed that way now looking back, but if you intend to remain in the race, you have little choice but to adopt a policy of “Bring It On!” We’ll make mistakes and missteps along the way.

One such error occurred last year when we opted to experiment with the physical size of three of our publications, converting them from our standard long tab format to shorter condensed flat tab format. It was an attempt to save both printing and postal costs while improving the design packaging of the information we send you each week. While the compact package has merits, we’ve come to realize it has not accomplished the intended results and in fact has limited our capability to bring you more news and information at a time when we’ve vowed to improve both. So in the next few weeks we’ll be converting the Burgh, North Countryman and Valley News back to our traditional long tab format.

In making all these tweaks to your community newspaper many of you have from time to time let us know your thoughts about the changes. I would like to encourage you to please continue to give your suggestions and guidance about how we deliver this information and what information we deliver. My only reminder is that while you may not like a feature or article, others may find great value in its availability.

Our goal is to make certain everyone finds something of value worth reading in the paper. From time to time we’ll get complaints that we have too much sports coverage or they don’t see the value in the regional news, but we’ll get just as many comments on how others want more sports and suggestions that we quit publishing regional papers and instead produce one large product.

We know it’s nearly impossible to please everyone with everything we publish. But with your help and assistance we can continue to improve the papers and find the “just right” mix of news and information that fits your wishes.

So please keep sending your emails, tell us your thoughts, invite us to speak at your club or group meetings and we’ll do our very best to continue publishing these valuable, free community newspapers.

And lastly, I’d be remiss if I didn’t thank those of you who’ve signed on to be volunteer subscribers to the papers. The financial support is greatly appreciated.

Keep teachers in place To the Valley News: The Keene Central School Superintendent Cynthia Johnston is using her prerogative to shift several elementary teaching positions.

One of which is the kindergarten teacher.

Erin Perkins has been teaching kindergarten for 23 years at Keene Central. She has dedicated herself in doing an outstanding job. The young students just starting in an all day school envir onment have special needs. Miss Perkins has learned over the past 23 years what these needs ar e and has carried them out exemplarily. When the students leave her grade they are very well prepared to make the transition to the next

June 25, 2011 grade level.

Why would any superintendent who had the students’ best inter est in mind, take a teacher with 23 years of experience and put her in a third grade position? All the young students coming to start their lives at Keene Central w ill b e d eprived o f t he b est s tart they could possibly have. This is a very unjust decision. My sole concern is for the children and what is the best envir onment for them.

So m any p eople t alk a mong t hemselves.

Please, if you feel the childr en will be deprived in this situation, call the Keene Central School Boar d members and let it be known. Your pr esence at the school boar d meeting on June 28, will also send a message that this decision is unjust and the childr en are mor e important to you. They can not speak for themselves. This is a small community and we need to show 23 years of experience does stand for something, especially in our small school system.

LEWIS — The town of Lewis has started to r eclaim the Mt. Fay ballfield on Stowersville Road.

The town has leased into the ballfield, which used to host modified baseball and softball games for Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School and other softball events.

Town Councilman Charlie Martin pr esented the T own Boar d with an update on progress at the field during the June 14 regular board meeting.

“There is still a lot of work to be done and materials for the work are running out fast,” Martin said.

Supervisor David Blades said that the town was looking for those who wer e willing to donate materials to the project.

“There are some materials that will eventually have to be pur chased, or hopefully donated, to get the work done,” Blades said.

“What we r eally need right now is topsoil and lumber for posts. If anyone knows of someone who has those materials or has them and wants to donate, they can contact us at the town offices.”

Martin said that ther e has been a lot of work done at the park, starting with the removal of the bleachers, which will not be er placed.

Other work has included the removing of debris, r emoving and r eplaceing br oken fence posts with cedar posts, r ebuilding player benches, r emoving the scr ubboard, renovations to the backstop, digging up and leveling the infield and r emoving the outfield home run wall.

“With the infield, we will leave the ar ea all dirt,” Martin said. “Ther e have been some concerns about tearing down the outfield wall.”

Martin also pr esented a wish list for the project, which included additional cedar posts, grass seed, fertilizer, two or three tandem tr uck loads of to p soi l and use of an ATV to drag the infield and or ll the outfield.

ELIZABETHTOWN — Dr. Lynne Macco has joined the medical staf f of Elizabethtown Community Hospital.

Dr. Macco brings experience in gynecology and women’s r eproductive health, along with specialized training in medical acupuncture.

Dr. Macco will provide healthcare to women by pr oviding r outine gynecological exams, contraceptive advice, hormonal therapy and tr eatment for other gynecological issues. Her parttime schedule will initially allow her to see patients at Elizabethtown Community Hospital each Monday.

Jackson said that along with not being contacted himself, his clerk, and members of the board were also not contacted.

“They did not talk to the board as far as I know and their talk with Lois (Sayward) was limited,” Jackson said.

The comptroller’s report, released June 13, said that there were several discrepancies in the general fund and sewer funds, as well as cash receipts at the Essex Transfer Station and the Essex W ater District, costing the town over $22,000 in revenues that were owed to them.

“The sewer advances were done as the auditors told us to do it,” Jackson said. “If they would have asked me about it, I would have told them that.”

Jackson did say that there was a mistake made in the $22,000 discrepancy in transfer station tickets, but that since, the error has been repaid.

“No money was siphoned off or is missing,” Jackson said. “These are accounting errors.”

Jackson also said that the discr epancy was a matter that fell into the town clerk’s office, not the supervisor’s clerk.

“That was handled through me andAudrey (Hoskins, town clerk),” Jackson said.

“It had nothing to do with Lois. It is there in the audit.”

Jackson said that some wor ding in the audit could have been worded better.

Boisen then quoted page 12: “The Town lacked comprehensive written policies and procedures to provide adequate guidance and internal contr ols,” followed by, “In response to your question regarding transfer site ticket responsibilities ... it is what it is,’ later saying over the phone, “The bottom line is that it is the town board’s responsibility to have policies and procedures in place.”

Jackson kept to his belief that if the Comptroller’s Office would have included him in the audit, they would have found what they needed.

“If they would have asked the person who created the records, they would have gotten them,” Jackson said. “The fact that (current supervisor) Shar on (Boisen) did not know how to access them, well, I’m sorry about that.”

"Financial r ecords should be available to state auditors who use them as the basis for audits,” Comptr oller ’s Of fice spokesperson Kate Gurnett said in an emailed statement. “Also, the bookkeeper was there under the prior supervisor.”

In a phone call, Gurnett added that, “the books should be the books, r egardless of whoever is the supervisor when the audit is done.”

Boisen said that she did not know what files would not have been accessible to the comptroller, although she did say that some items that wer e requested from the clerk to the supervisor and not pr ovided have since been tracked down.

“I have found some information that was, at the time, not pr ovided by the supervisor’s clerk,” Boisen said. “At the time the comptroller requested the items, they

“One would think that the supervisor would give a copy of the r eport to those involved,” Jackson said. “When I was supervisor, anything that mentioned Bill Drummond or anyone else, I sent them a copy of that letter or whatever it was. The comptroller or the supervisor did not do that. It’s about common courtesy.”

Keeseville seeks stone designs

keith@denpubs.com KEESEVILLE — The village of Keeseville wants the community to help design a soonto-be renovated portion of sidewalk.

The sidewalk portion, which is located at the village tennis courts near the village offices, will be part of a paving stone contest offered through the village.

“There will be eight winners and the stones will be judged for most cre ative, most original and most colorful,” said Keeseville mayor Meegan Rock. “The contest begins on June 30, and all of the stones have to be in place by 1 p.m. on July 7.”

The stones will be 2 inches in length and width and 4 inches thick.

Prizes will include $100 for first place, $75 for second, $50 for third and five $25 award s.

“It’s a great chance for people in the community to show of f their craft talents and bring a little life to the sidewalk,” Rock said.

Jay board votes to remove dam, help with community garden

JAY — Members of the Jay T own Board voted at their regular meeting June 9 to remove the Upper Jay dam, allow a community gar den to use town pr operty, and to apply for a grant to assist the creation of the garden.

The dam, located on Cr owningshield Road, was built in 1923, according to Carol Treadwell, executive director of the Ausable River Association. While there are a number of hurdles to removing it, inc luding a permit pr ocess and a grant sear ch, she guessed the dam would be gone within a year.

Located on Lewis Brook, which flows into the East Branch of the Ausable River, the dam is no longer used and in deteriorating condition, said Chris Garr ow, town superintendent of highways and dir ector of the department of public works. It will not be replaced.

In the past, the d am was used to cr eate a n open reservoir from which the town could access drinking water and fill its fir e hydrants. But about five years ago, Garr ow said, the town of Jay switched over to a system in which water was taken from wells.

Removing the dam will allow fish to pass through the blocked section of the br ook. The dam gates could not simply be opened, Garrow said, because sediment would filter into nearby streams and rivers. Instead, water will be

pumped from one side to the other and the sediment will be removed.

The community gar den will be located near the b asketball c ourts in th e G rove a rea i n Au Sable Forks. Fr ed Balzac, an or ganizer of the project, was authorized to apply for an up-to$5,000 public health grant on behalf of the town of Jay. Supervisor Randy Douglas and Essex County Planner Mike Mascarenas were expected to r eview his application, which had to be submitted before June 17.

The community garden project grew out of an April 6 meeting at W ells Memorial Library , Balzac said. About 15 people attended, including Douglas, to discuss rising food and gas prices.

“I think gardening is a great activity,” Balzac said. “Gr owing your own food is not only a healthy practice, it’s a fulfilling practice.”

Town of ficials ar e backing the community garden project.

“As government leaders, we love community involvement,” Supervisor Douglas said, adding that any offsetting of food prices is just an added bonus.

The grant Balzac is applying for on behalf of the t own i s f rom E ssex C ounty P ublic H ealth Department. This money comes from a “Creating Healthy Places” grant that ECPHD applied for and received from New York state in the fall of 2010, according to Balzac. The money can be used to fund seven to 10 proposals that support

healthy nutrition, physical activity and a sustainable environment.

Community gardens cost on average $1,000$4,000 to cr eate, Balzac said. Potential costs of the Jay garden include fencing, tools, and a tool shed.

Vegetables at the gar den will primarily be grown for the consumption of the growers, though Balzac said he’d love to see some of the

produce donated to local food pantries. Growers will likely have to pay a nominal fee to raise plants for the year. All garden policies will need to be approved by the town of Jay. The town will learn whether their application has been approved by June 30, Balzac said. He said it was his goal that people could begin growing plants this calendar year, but was unsure if it was possible.

Westport community mourns passing of Agnes Tanneberger WESTPORT — Westport and the local community took t ime to r emember the matriarch of the Tanneberger family last week.

Agnes K. “Ag” Tanneberger, 84, passed away June 15, 2011 at Highland Hospital in Rochester.

Frank Tanneberger, who were married after meeting at Cornell University on Sept. 13, 1947, moved to W estport in 1948.

The Tannebergers bought the curr ent family home in 1951 and were the parents of eight childr en: Ellen (Stiles), Barbara (Baldwin), Robert, Jean (LeVien), Mary, Anthony, Car ol (Schwoebel) and Dr .

Thomas T anneberger, whom pr edeceased her. She was also a grandmother to 16 grandchildren.

Tanneberger was remembered as a devoted mother, friend and member of the Westport community. She was active at the St. Philip Neri Church, in the garden, painting and as a member of the W estport Bridge Club, which was started in 1953.

Dance group performs for 30th year at talent show

WESTPORT — In 1982, the W estport Youth Commission was looking for a pr ogram that would get kids active, so they approached Caroline Thompson with the idea for a dance group.

Thirty years later , the gr oup has become an annual tradition not only for the score s of elementary students who participate in it, but also for the annual performance that takes to the stage at the W estport Central School talent show.

“Our first year in 1982, the theme for the talent show was Jungle Love,” Thompson said. “I can remember each of the kids from the first show. I have kept every single name from every single show.”

Thompson said that she had been doing dance pr ograms befor e the youth commission, but was approached by youth commission director Beth Lewis prior to the 1981-82 school year.

“I have loved watching each of them as they have grown up,” she said. “When I see them doing so well after they have gone through the dance pr ogram, it makes me happy that they wer e able to learn movement early in their schooling.”

Thompson said one of the re asons she said yes to the idea when it started was for her children.

“I wanted to make sur e that my kids had dance,” she said. “However , they did not

want to learn dance from their mother.”

But many others did learn fr om her, and remembered those lessons well beyond elementary school.

“One time, a former student came up to me at a show and asked me if I wanted to dance,” Thompson said. “I said, ‘you don’t want to dance with an old lady,’ and his reply was, ‘but you are the one that taught me to do this.’”

On May 21, the current group of students in the class performed music to the theme of “Willy Wonka’s Talent Factory.”

“I thought it was wonderful,” Thompson said. “The kids wer e sensational and they worked hard at it.”

Depot Theatre preps for season of premiers

keith@denpubs.com WESTPORT — The history of tap dance will take to the stage, the first of thr ee premieres at the Depot Theatre in 2011.

“We’ve got three premieres and five main pr oductions,” said Chris Casquilho, managing director of the Depot Theatr e.

“We have a world pr emiere that will be staged for the first time anywhere and two other pr emieres that have been in limited engagements in other parts of the country but never in New York.”

“Riffin and T appin,” the first of the pr emieres, will take to the stage starting

July 1 and run through July 17.

“It is a history of tap dance in America and the show is one of the pr emieres,” Casquilho said. “It was created for a theater in Oregon, and the writer , Christopher Patterson, will be coming to direct and performing in it. He is an amazing dancer and amazing choreographer.”

Patterson w ill b e r eturning to the Depot, having directed “Five Guys Named Moe” and “Smoky Joe’s Cafe,” in the past.

Casquilho added that the July 2 performance would start at 7 p.m., instead of the usual 8 p.m. curtain.

The second of the regional premiers, “Wicked City,” will be put on from Aug. 12 through Aug. 21.

Obituaries Curtis Alvin Ashline Sept. 6, 1954 - June 10, 2011 WILLSBORO — C urtis Alvin Ashline passed away June 10, 2011 at St. Peters Hospital in Albany, N.Y. Curtis was born Sept. 6, 1954 the son of David and Marilyn Ashline and the late Sally Fre nch.

Curtis was the former owner of the L & W, and Mountainview Restaurants in Willsboro.

Curtis is survived by thr ee children, R enee a nd K evin P utney of South Berry, Vt., Curtis A. Ashline II of W illiamstown, Vt., and Cher ee Ashline of Montpelier, Vt. Also, br others W ard, Michael, Robert, James and Robyn Ashline, all of W illsboro, Bruce and Br enda Ashline of Johnsburg, and Richard and Caroleen Ashline of South Glens Falls. He is also survived by thr ee granddaughters, several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Curtis was predeceased by his mother Sally French and brother Chris Ashline.

A memorial service was held June 18 in Albany.

John L. Gardner Oct. 5, 1944 - June 19, 2011 HALFMOON — John L. Gardner of Halfmoon, N.Y ., passed away on June 19, 2011 at Brigham & Womens Hospital in Boston, Mass. after a long illness.

Long said that ther e ar e a lot of people who “live quietly” with the disease, and her hope is that through awareness, there will be more assistance for all of the families dealing with the disease.

“I don’t think that anyone is prepared for or expects a diagnosis for a terminal illness,” Long said. “A lot of people, when they hear of ALS, picture Lou Gerhig standing in front of the microphone at Yankee Stadium saying

Ski jumping in July LAKE PLACID — The tradition dates back to the beginning of the 20th century and will continue, Satur day, July 2, when ski jumpers take to the Olympic Jumping Complex for the beginning of the summer jumping season on the 90-meter ski jump.

The July 2 winner will have a leg up on the 2011 Art Devlin Cup chase. This is a season-long series that includes the July 2 event, the Flaming Leaves meet in October and the Masters Ski Jump in December .

The day begins at 1 p.m. with the first of two official rounds.

Admission to the event is $15 for adults, $9 for juniors and seniors and includes a chairlift ride and an elevator ride to the top of the 120-meter ski jump. She notes that while DOT is left prioritizing which pr ojects to undertake, the state itself is being car eless with its own priorities..

“We have to have our priorities,” she said. “It is a priority to buy up the land in the Adirondack Park? W e don’t think so, because the sustainability of our communities is at stake. W e have so much state land in each and every town – it’s great to have it and it makes the Adirondacks attractive, but I think we’ve reached a point where enough is enough.”

Politi, Little, and others say conservation easements for r ecreational opportunities ar e meaningless if tourists don’t feel safe coming to the Park.

At the end of the day, there doesn’t appear to be a simple fix to the growing inf r a s t ru c t u re m e s s i n s i d e t h e P a r k a n d across New York.

But at least one town supervisor has been successful in getting the state to fix a much-neglected highway.

Two years ago, the state completed a m a j o r r e c o n s t ru c t i o n o f s t a t e R o u t e 7 3 along the Cascade Pass, in between Lake Placid and Keene.

Keene Supervisor Bill Fer ebee notes that it was pressure from state police and organizers of the Ir onman triathlon that eventually triggered the project.

“I was involved at that time and of course it looks bad to our constituency because the focus at that time was to impr ove the roads and the reasoning was for the safety of Ironman,” he said.

“The focus needs to be for the safety of everyone, not just dedicated to a sporting event,” Ferebee added.

Betty Little agr ees with Fer ebee, but she says using the Ir onman race to influence the DOT may be the best tactic at this point.

Whatever happens, the anxiety is there among local officials and state lawmakers as they watch roads and bridges crumble around them.

“This is part of Wilmington’s heritage,” he said. “This is going to be devastating to the town of Wilmington. If we can even come up with money somewhere to get it re p l a c e – I u n d e r s t a n d t h a t m o n e y i s tight, but this is public safety . This should be front and center anywhere in the state, and not taking a back burner . And it is.

Officials said the pr ogram aims to im-

prove health care quality, increase access to primary care services, and keep costs down.

The pilot featur es mor e than 35 primary care practices, including about 100 physicians fr om acr oss the Adirondack North Country as well as physician assistants and nurse practitioners. Five hospitals, seven commercial health plans, and mor e are also participating in the program.

LAKE PLACID — A Christian group will begin offering free meals this summer at the Baptist Community Church in Lake Placid.

The Lake Placid V illage Boar d of T rustees gave organizers of the Lake Placid Community Lunch permission last week to use the village seal on their marketing materials.

Mayor Craig Randall called their gestur e a “token contribution to an admirable undertaking for the community.”

Pat Jorgensen is a board member of the notfor-profit or ganization. She said the gr oup needs donations of time and money to provide the free lunches every Wednesday, pointing out that it’s a good opportunity for students who need community service credit for schools.

Jorgensen said the lunches would be open to everyone, not just senior citizens. She said children and families could also belly up to a sumptuous offering of homemade meals.

She and other volunteers plan to cook all the food in the chur ch kitchen, including dishes such as sloppy joes, goulash, Shepard’s pie and lasagna.

The same group has been providing a popular community lunch in Saranac Lake for more than six years.

Mineville woman connects on rare multi-bearded tom The long-long-longbeard was her first

f Mineville resident Brenda Sherman tells you the length of the beard on the gobbler she shot this spring was 19 inches, you’re not hearing things.

That’s because Sherman’s tom — the first she’s ever shot — had not one, but three beards, a rarity found in only a very small population of the wild birds.

Because turkeys are scored cumulatively, all three beards — two at 7.5 inches and one at 4 inches — count toward the final tally, making Sherman’s longbeard a once-in-alifetime trophy.

Brenda’s husband Jimmer called the bird in for her during the early morning hours of May 7, after carefully placing three hen decoys along with a jake trailing behind in a small opening along a field. The couple then climbed into their ground blind to wait for shooting light.

“Around 5:15 a train went through and blew its whistle. To my surprise this tom gobbled on his roost about 150 yards away.

I waited until it was pretty light out and gave a couple of soft yelps and a few purrs just to let him know he had company, “ Jimmer said.

Sure enough, the tom came looking for love, but hungup about 80 yards out, before turning and slowly walking away from the Mossberg 835 ULTI-MAG Jimmer

had given Brenda.

Jimmer knew he had to do something.

“I then took my chances and really made that old slate call make some noise,” Jimmer recalled. “He stopped, turned around and responded. I gave it to him again aggressively. He closed the distance by about 20 feet and gobbled again! I repeated the same aggressive calling and he started closing the distance by 20-30 feet each time.”

Jimmer turned to Brenda and told her to be ready. When the bird closed to 25 yards, Jimmer whispered “take him.”

“That old 12 gauge roared and wings started fluttering,” Jimmer said.

It wasn’t the first longbeard that fell victim to Jimmer ’s Mossberg — both his sons harvested their first birds with it as well, the first a 21-pound brute with a paint brush beard for Travis and the second a double spurred 18-pounder for Carl, also a rarity.

Brenda’s tom weighed 18 pounds and had 3/4-inch spurs.

While the Shermans were certainly successful during this spring’s turkey season, state biologists are predicting the weathercrossed season may produce a smaller than expected bag.

The state is still in the process of conducting surveys for harvest estimates, but

Even more disturbing is the fact that soggy, flooded ground made for some of the poorest nesting conditions in years, which biologists fear will mean the number of poults per hen will be down dramatically, the effects of which may be felt for the next several seasons.

Bishop wins Wilmington/Whiteface bicycle race qualifing event W I L M I N G TO N — J e re m i a h B i s h o p o f Harrisonburg, V a. was the first rider to cross the finish line, taking top honors in the inaugural W ilmington/Whiteface 100K mountain bike race (WW100), held June 19, in Wilmington.

Bishop raced past the field of 231 cyclists in thr ee hours, 33 minutes, 34.07 seconds.

Sunday’s 57-mile long, out and back race covering the towns of W ilmington, Jay, Keene and Lewis took the cyclists up and down Jay Mountain and Saddleback b e f o re r e t u r n i n g t o W h i t e f a c e w h e r e a 2,501 foot climb awaited for them befor e crossing the finish line.

The women’s field was led by Susan Lynch, (Medfield, Mass.). The 51-year o l d s p i n n i n g i n s t ru c t o r w a s c l o c k e d i n 4:51:14.94.

Nicole LaPlante of Per u was second, reaching the bottom of Whiteface Mountain in 4:59:49.52.

Sunday’s race qualified 100 cyclists for the Aug. 13 Leadville 100 MTB (LT 100), in Leadville, Colo. Fifty wer e allocated based on age-group performance and the other 50 wer e distributed by a drawing among the finishers who met the time standard that is specific to each qualifying event.

Civilized fan of sports, or rabid sports fan?

nyone who knows me knows that sports has played and continues to play a roll in my life.

I am a fan of the New York Mets baseball team, all Brigham Young University athletics and the New York Giants football team.

Playing and coaching baseball is still a passion of mine, and I enjoy hitting the links with my son from time to time.

I enjoy watching sports, and playing a sports-themed game periodically.

However, if you would have asked me to write this same column, say, seven years ago, that list would have been longer. It was a much bigger part of my life.

You see, there comes a time when you have to trim your sports tree. You can’t watch everything. I used to enjoy the NBA, now I hardly blinked during the playoffs.

Hockey — I watched one game all year — game seven of the Stanley Cup finals.

With this, I have also found that I have transitioned from a “sports fan” to a “fan of sports.” These two terms are quite different.

A fan of sports appreciates the game and, while still using sports as an escape from the real world, realizes that his life does not end if his favorite team loses a game.

A sports fan, well, that’s a little different.

Here are some examples: Fan of sports: Knows that the officials are human, capable of mistakes, and that one or two missed calls most likely do not

Sport fan: Believes the NBA is rigged, Major League umpires have it out for their team and that it was the ref ’s fault that their children’s high school team

lost by 30.

Fan of sports: Respects the other team, shows courtesy and respect after the game, much like when fans cheered former UVM goalie Tim Thomas when he was named the Con Smythe (playoff MVP) winner after game seven in Vancouver.

Sports fan: Was outside the arena in Vancouver, turning over cars, breaking windows and making a fool out of a city that is one of the best in the Pacific northwest, and the host of the last Olympiad.

Fan of sports: Realizes that it has taken a lot of hard work and dedication for these athletes to attain what they have.

Sport fan: “LeBron James is a bum! He can’t play in the big game. How is he even in the NBA!” Fan of sports: Respects an athlete’s pri-

vacy.

Sports fan: “Mr. Jeter, can I have your autograph.”

“Sure, sir. Just let me finish using the toilet first.”

Fan of sports: Encourages their children to do their best in whatever sport they choose to play and support the team in any way that they can.

Sports fan: Pushes little Bobby toward basketball because that is the sport he enjoyed growing up and believes that, so what if Bobby can’t dribble or shoot, he should be a starter or the coach does not know the game.

Fan of sports: May disagree with a call or a move by a head coach or manager, but realizes it is just a game.

Sports fan: Writes an anonymous opinion section stating that the referee that was responsible for the 30-point blowout or the coach that won’t start Bobby should be fired and shamed for eternity.

I could go on, but I think that paints the picture. Now I am not saying that I sometimes do not have flashbacks (Terry Collins as Mets manager?). It is a long road to detox from being a sports fan to a fan of sports.

But I’m getting there.
