LAKE PLACID — The Conference Center at Lake Placid is welcoming everyone to take a look at the newest “jewel” of the Olympic Village.

“We feel that this is going to be a jewel of conference centers throughout the northeast,” Jon Lundin, public relations coordinator for ORDA, said. “It has been a long process, and we have had our ups and downs during the construction phase, but now it is complete.”

There will be an open house for the center on Tuesday, June 21, including a ribbon cutting ceremony, between 4 and 6:30 p.m.

The event will include tours of the facility and staff on-hand to answer questions. There will also be hors d’ oeuvres from CenterPlate and live music.

“We want people to come and experience the conference center,” Lundin said.

“This is a tremendous asset to the region and this will give everyone a chance to see what has bee created for them and the region.”

The Conference Center has already been busy hosting groups and events, starting with the Mountain Lake

mo to the Tri-Lakes region.

“That was the biggest highlight that we have had so far,” said Lundin. “What he stressed that really hit home to all of us was that he was pleased that this was a project that was on-time and, more importantly, onbudget.”

Lundin said that the goal of the conference center is to be a hub for businesses and other organizations to utilize throughout the year.

“This helps us ensure that Lake Placid will be a 12months out of the year destination,” Lundin said.

On June 15, at 7:30 p.m., the Wadhams Free Library will offer a talk entitled “Google and Beyond: How to Find What You’re Looking for on the Internet” by WCS alumna Sara Kelley-Mudie, who since graduating in 1997 has gone on to a successful career in library sciences. She will share valuable tips on how to expand your search results beyond the first few hits, and how to get the most out of your online searches. The talk is free, and your questions will be welcome.

On July 19, Westport voters will decide on a revised plan for the proposed municipal building, which would combine facilities for the fire department, town shed, school bus garage, and town offices in one cost-saving structure. A year ago, an earlier version was defeated by just seven votes.

usy weekend coming up next week. First, we have the Keeseville Free Library Book Sale during regular library hours. As I have mentioned before, I always find a lot of wonderful things at the book sale. Also concerning the library we have a benefit concert on Saturday, June 18 starting at 7:30 pm at St. John the Baptist Church. Admission is a free will offering with the proceeds to benefit the library. The concert is being performed by the local group After Thoughts. After Thoughts is a vocal ensemble made up of some very talented area teachers who perform for local charities.

Next up on Sunday the 19th will be the third annual Pig and Swig by the Elks lodge up Main Street. I will give more information concerning time and events next week.

Through Keeseville Treasurer Mary King I have learned that we have a local emergency response group who assemble to shelter and feed people in emergency situations. This past Thursday they ran a trial breakfast to test their response and effec-

tiveness. Again, I can never say enough about how wonderful it is that our community has elements in it like this for the benefit and well-being of us all.

I would like to thank all the people who stop me wherever I might be prowling to comment on this column. Yes, I have very quickly developed a huge love for my new community. Truthfully I wasn’t even born in this area. I’m really a New Jersey and downstate transplant who fell in the love with region when I came up here for college back in the 1980s. I do see a lot of charm and great friendly spirit now and a rich history filled with many fascinating events and periods throughout its history.

Recently I acquired a copy of Virginia Westbrook’s “A Thoroughly Wide Awake Little Village: A Walking Guide to Keeseville’s Historic District.” As I was reading this it was confirmed for me that yes, our little community certainly warrants this kind of recognition and is really this special a place.

t’s warming up finally and so it’s time for a barn dance. Lakeside Preschool will be having one Saturday night to benefit the school and establish a scholarship program. The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. with a dinner for $5 featuring organic hot dogs, salads and side dishes. The dancing in the barn begins at 7, with a live band and caller. The suggested donation is $10, and you can also bid on items in a silent auction. At 8:30 p.m. dessert will be served, and the auction concluded. Lakeside is at Black Kettle Farm, at the intersection of Cook and Leaning Roads just up the hill from Whallonsburg.

The Grange, also in Whallonsburg, is looking for appliances to go into the new kitchen.

eople often say to me, what in the world do you get to do in your small community? Wow, if people took in all that is offered, they probably would not be able to do it all. This past week was a prime example of just what people can take advantage of. The Methodist Church Public Supper, The Catholic Church Buffet Breakfast, the opening of the new restaurant Johnny’s Sport’s Bar, Bay View is now open for the season. There was the wonderful play, “Sleeping Beauty,” performed for two evenings and Sunday afternoon. This was a production under the direction of the Willsboro Drama Club and the performers were from grades of kindergarten to 6th grade, they did a great job. Then the School Music Dept. under the direction of Jennifer Moore along with some of her students gave an outstanding afternoon concert featuring 11 solo performances on Sunday afternoon at the Essex church; some very talented young people. The school sports awards event. There were several yard sales, bowling, CATS gathering with Bill McKibben as an outstanding speaker, an Open House with skills of older crafts and ways of life at the 1812 Homestead. There was an art exhibit at the Paine Library. Defensive Driving classes were offered at the Congregational Church this past

Next week on Sunday, June 12 the Ecumenical Youth Group will be holding a Compassionate Cultural Fair from noon to 4 p.m.

They will be featuring baked goods, arts and crafts, Michigans, Ramen noodles a raffle and more. The proceeds will go to assist the disaster area in the world, so they could really use our support. It seems that my dog Ginny has lots of friends and admirers, because if I’m out scaring up stories for this column, and she’s not with me, I get asked about it. Even at the transfer station I hear “Where’s that little dog?” Ginny’s fame is now spreading to Plattsburgh, where I volunteer at the transportation museum and she holds court on a shady porch there, greeting visitors and shaking hands with delighted school kids. The museum director bought her a box of dog biscuits and his day doesn’t start until he offers Ginny a treat and she provides him with a chaste kiss. She will kiss anyone, especially if you’re someone who might have a convertible available for the July 4 parade.

Unions should make concessions; Gov’s should stop threatening layoffs

T

he ongoing power struggle between the New York state governor ’s office and state workers’ unions must stop if we’re ever going to have a stable state workforce.

In the past few years, the governors — David Paterson in 2009 and 2010 and now Andrew Cuomo — have threatened to lay off thousands of state workers in order to make up for multi-billion-dollar shortfalls in the state budgets. This year, with the budget actually passed on time, Gov. Cuomo has built a $450 million savings in the approved 2011-12 spending plan based on union concessions.

It’s a brilliant move on his part and provides leverage with union contract negotiations. The governor will either get the concessions he wants or lay off about 9,800 state workers in order to achieve the self-imposed mandate to cut $450 million.

Cuomo and Paterson have each met strong opposition by the powerful public employee unions, including Council 82,

CSEA and PEF. Paterson and the unions came to an agreement in 2009, after several months of wrangling, in which the governor finally pledged not to lay off state workers. It was a welcome reprieve for employees. But it didn’t last long.

Just before leaving office at the end of 2010, Paterson once again threatened layoffs. And now Cuomo has picked up that ball and is running with it, all the way to the end zone and $450 million in savings.

But who is right?

It’s a tough call.

Overall, we’d rather see the unions make concessions and prevent layoffs.

The sooner, the better.

Unfortunately, members of Council 82 — a union representing SUNY police and uniformed DEC personnel — recently rejected a contract that called for a wage freeze and other givebacks. We hope other unions don’t follow suit.

These unions traditionally act as though they can have their cake and eat it, too: keeping jobs while not making concessions. But we’re not sure Cuomo will capitulate as easily as Paterson did in 2009. The unions have run into a stone wall this time, and if they push the governor too hard, he’ll just start cutting jobs. “The clock is ticking” he recently told reporters.

New York can’t afford to lose jobs. And our North Country communities — many of which rely on state employment —

can’t afford more unemployment. The economy will suffer. More importantly, our family members and neighbors who work in these public positions will suffer.

It is often the low men on the totem pole that fall victim in these situations — with salaries that least impact tax dollars and a work ethic that surpasses their superiors.

That just drives more of our young from the region.

The bottom line is New York’s governors need to learn the consequences of their actions. They wield the layoff ax too easily during these contract negotiations, and they are causing more harm than is necessary. Who suffers? State workers, their families, and all citizens served by our state agencies.

When the governor threatens layoffs, he puts in motion an agency-by-agency assessment of departments and divisions, listing them by priority. Sometimes, certain staff positions are targeted for potential layoffs. Yet nobody really knows who will be cut in the end, if anybody.

So, logically, people get emotional.

They start protecting themselves by seeking other employment “just in case.”

Morale suffers tremendously through the entire state workforce. And, no matter how hard managers try to keep their employees on task, production suffers. It’s downright depressing. Sometimes people

leave state jobs “just in case” and their positions are eliminated. And who wins?

Certainly not taxpayers.

As sure as tax time comes around every April, governors keep threatening layoffs. While the annual wave of job insecurity has undoubtedly weeded out some of the less productive state workers, it has also taken its toll on the majority of loyal, hardworking ones.

We agree with Sen. Betty Little, RQueensbury, that layoffs should be a last resort. Little’s spokesman, Dan MacEntee, recently spoke with this editorial board and told us that the senator hopes New York’s public unions can work successfully with the governor to help the state meet its budgetary goals during these tough economic times.

We urge the union leaders and members to approve contracts that help save the state $450 million. And, we ask Gov. Cuomo, and all those who are elected governor in the future, to stop using the harmful negotiation tactic of threatening layoffs.

Only the property tax relief measure known as a circuit breaker can help our most overburdened middle-class residents. Sometimes described as an “individual cap,” it effectively limits the net amount of household income most residents would have to pay in total property tax on their home by allowing a state income tax credit for part of the property tax paid over a designated percentage of income, usually in the six to nine percent range.

Renters, who pay taxes indirectly through the landlord, may also qualify.

Bipartisan legislation we support (S912, A5542) would initially cover families with household incomes up to $100,000 ($250,000 when fully phased in) and is urgent to save homes and to help stem the middle-class flight from our state. Legislation just introduced (S4171, A7673) provides a responsible blueprint for state funding of the circuit breaker in our austere fiscal environment.

While a circuit breaker does not reduce spending, it will not lead to higher local budgets as STAR is thought to have done. That’s because of the way

the circuit breaker benefit is structured and because the credit would cover only 70 percent of the property tax paid above the income percentage.

The beneficiary’s 30 percent “co-pay” would ensure continued vigilance against budget creep.

Proponents of the tax cap argue that the cap will limit spending. That may happen, depending largely on local situations. The limit may end up as a help or a hindrance, depending on your point of view and the impact on services you may need or want. But whatever merit one perceives in a cap, it is misleading to portray it as “property tax relief” when it will only increase property taxes.

More and more New Yorkers are expressing concern over the drawbacks and limitations of a cap, especially without mandate relief and a circuit breaker. Albany should broaden the dialogue in the remaining days of the legislative session and enact a more comprehensive solution to the property tax crisis.

GUESTVIEWPOINT Tax cap doesn’t go far enough

I

n their desperate quest for something— anything—that might alleviate the property tax crisis, taxpayers are being led to believe Albany's proposed property tax cap is the answer to their prayers.

Unfortunately, in a single-minded push for the cap, the current administration has discouraged debate and simply ignored many of the New Yorkers most overwhelmed by property taxes. They are the several hundred thousand residents already paying unsustainable, double-digit percentages of their income in property tax.

Those residents will get no relief from the cap. If you can’t afford your taxes today, you’re unlikely to find them more affordable when they keep rising each year, as the cap provides.

Moreover, the cap’s proponents generally avoid explaining that the “tax cap” only caps the increase in tax levy -- not your tax bill. A two percent cap on the tax levy can translate into a double-digit increase in your individual bill in a given year, due to individual assessment changes, reapportionment of the tax levy, etc.

Take care of fields To the Valley News: When I first moved in to Keene Valley in the 1970s, both sides of Route 73, for the most part, were beautiful meadows allowing great views of the mountains and surrounding community.

That is not the case today, and it makes me sad to lose that spectacular drive. A very big thank you to those who have continued to mow their fields and a plea to the rest to please do not let the forest close in on us.

You might also write to the DEC or DOT about the field at the bottom of Spruce Hill which they are supposed to mow every other year and did not last year (third year) so have a big job to do this year and I think we should insist they do it and cut down the

many little trees and other junk that is growing on the flats.

One of the great glories of Keene Valley has long been the lovely views of field and forest in the distance, something that exists in abundance in Vermont. It was almost breathtaking when I drove to Fletcher-Allen via Spear Road last week with Spring popping out all over.

From the Archives The Essex County Republican, June 1880 MINEVILLE—Another sad catastrophe occurred here on Tuesday of last week, which has cast gloom over the whole neighborhood and plunged two families into deep affliction. After the men had quit work at 6 o’clock, Thomas Waldruss, a put boss in one of the pits at New Bed mine, and a helper named George Gilfoy, as was their usual custom, remained in the pit to fire a number of holes that had been drilled during the afternoon. They had fired a hole twice and it had missed, or in mining phrase had blown out without getting any ore, and they had charged it the third time and had cut the fuse, when it exploded, killing Gilfoy instantly, and it is feared fatally injuring Waldruss. One of his eyes is totally destroyed and the other is so badly injured that he can scarcely discern a lighted lump when it is passed before his eyes. Both were men with families, dependent on their day’s labor for their support.

SCHROON RIVER—Peter C. Welch was arrested last Monday by constable Duntley for crime of rape, brought before justice Wakefield-plead not guilty, and asked for time to get counsel, constable gave him twenty-four hours. Before the time expired he made his escape. While at Bloomingdale’s store he refused to go with the constable, and drew an axe and told him to stand off. The constable followed him to his house, shot at him once, and took dinner with him. After dinner Welch went out to grease his wagon, but instead of greasing the wagon he made for the woods. The constable shat at him again, and returned to Schroon River without the prisoner. Ch was rearrested last Thursday at North Creek. By John Conley, brought back to Root’s Hotel, and examined, found guilty, and taken to the county jail to await the action of the next court.

TICONDEROGA—The Essex county spelling Bee was held in Elizabethtown Saturday, June 4th. There were fifteen contest-

ants, representing various sections of the County. Catherine Pezzula, 13 years old, of Ticonderoga won first place with a perfect score. Betty Clark, also of Ticonderoga, was second, and Evelyn DeZalia of North Hudson was third. The winner will attend the State Fair in Syracuse and compete in a State contest to be held August 30.

WESTPORT-The Essex County Firemen’s Association are making plans for a monster Fourth of July celebration and Field Day to be held at the Westport Fair Grounds, on Monday, July 4th. A tentative program calls for an all day affair, including an amateur program in the evening.

Baseball will be one feature. Harness races will be in charge of Sheriff Percy Egglefield, and he has been promised an excellent card. Something new will be competitive fire drills by different villages and towns. A boot, coat, and helmet race will provide many laughs. A model T Ford race, ladder climbing events, hose races, fire truck displays, etc. the American Legion Posts of the County are to be invited to participate in the parade. Also the various bands and the school drum and bugle corps in the county.

An amateur search for talent will be an early evening feature and arrangements are being made with different radio celebrities for personal appearances. The day will be climaxed with a wonderful display of fireworks and the price of admission will be within the reach of everyone. It will be one of the biggest celebrations to be staged in Essex County in many years.

The Face of a Child

I

n the face of a child the joy of just being alive can be observed in all of its untarnished latency.

Children have little in the way of possessions, they don’t own a house, and they don’t have cars or luxury boats.

They hold no currency, no stocks or bonds. They have never attended a prestigious university and they hold no advanced degree. In spite of their material and intellectual shortfalls, they are happy.

Their curiosity and zest for life allow them to enjoy even the smallest pleasure; one need only observe a child with an ice cream cone to understand. They walk with the energy and swagger of knowing that they are perfect just as they are.

They are perfect, until they are told they are not. Because children develop at different rates, a pee-wee baseball team may have children that are relatively large and physically developed alongside same age children that are small and undeveloped.

When the small child comes to the plate, he takes his cuts and sometimes strikes out or hits the ball a short distance. Still, he enjoys being on the team, wearing the uniform and all the while learning new skills.

However, his eagerness to keep trying is sometimes extinguished or diminished when teammates criticize. It is hard describe the look on a child’s face that has been hurt in this way.

The shoulders slump, the head falls forward, the child’s eyes are averted not wanting to look at anyone. The child feels shamed, made to feel an outcast and would simply disappear if he could.

Most children survive these emotional insults and others like them. It is when criticisms become more frequent and intense that these events become bullying.

It has been my experience in working with bullied children that they are often robbed of the pure joy of being young, in perfect health and encountering so many first time experiences. In a word, they become sad.

If you speak with a bullied child she will tell you this first and you can see it in her deportment.

She often concludes that something is wrong with

As the bullying continues, some children develop somatic complaints. They have frequent unexplained headaches or stomach aches often spending part of each day at the school nurses office.

They also report feeling lonely.

The victims of bullying become untouchables because classmates that befriend them or support them may become victims by association. I met a little boy about five years ago in a group setting that told me his feelings and I have never forgotten his face or his words.“Why do they all hate me, what have I done?”

Outwardly, I could not understand why his classmates shunned and taunted him. I wanted to tell him something to make him feel better. Later as I thought of him, I knew how inadequate and hollow my words were. I had told him to keep believing in himself no matter what, and others will come to believe in him, too.

Instead, I should have told him how wrong his classmates were in mistreating him. I should have sought out an adult who might have come to his aid. As adults, we can make a difference by not over looking bullying, whenever it happens.

Remember, all kids count.

“I am particularly concerned about the road between Wilmington and Lake Placid, Jay and Lake Placid, and Lake Placid to Saranac Lake,” Politi said. “I don’t know if any of you have had the opportunity to drive on those roads, and I am sure you all have roads in your particular area that are bad, but it is terrible. They know it, they just are not doing anything about it.”

“I think it is very important that we keep putting them on notice,” Jay supervisor and county chairman Randy Douglas said. “They need to pay particular attention because a dangerous situation is going to get worse if they don’t spend some of the funds to repair them.”

Politi said that he was frustrated with the answers that he had received from several agencies.

“I have spoken with DOT,” Politi said. “I have spoken with our local DOT representatives and State DOT representatives. I have corresponded with Senator Little. I have spoken to the State Police. Everyone has the same response - they agree that the roads are in atrocious condition, that someone is going to get hurt or there is going to be a bad accident but no one is pushing them to get the work done.”

Other supervisors spoke up about their experiences on state roads within the county.

“I certainly concur with you because it was quite mind boggling to me that about a week ago I traveled to Saranac Lake and on the North Elba side they are spending all that money to redo the railroad tracks and about 500-

“Willsboro Mountain Road is also pretty bad,” Essex supervisor Sharon Boisen said.

Keene supervisor William Ferebee said that he hoped that something could be done on these roads more than just for the bike races and triathlons scheduled to take place on them.

“Our concern is to bring that road up to better conditions for our constituents that travel that road 12 months a year,” Ferebee said.

“Last year or the year before when we had a road issue it just seemed like the state came forward just before an Ironman and paved that side of the road to make it safer for the bikers.”

Douglas said that “a couple” of years ago, he and former Willsboro supervisor Lori Lincoln-Spooner went to see DOT representative Mary Ivy about the situation on county roads.

“At that time they brought out a piece of a bridge that had cracked and said here, this is why we are not fixing your roads on Route 22, Route 86, Route 73 or whatever, it is because our bridges are atrocious throughout New York State and we don’t have the money for your roads,” Douglas said.

Elizabethtown Supervisor Noel Merrihew said that he felt the state should use money currently going toward land purchases for working on the infrastructure within the park.

“I think we have to really press that issue that there is $110 million dollars out there and not for land purchases, we need to take care of what is inside that Park first,” Merrihew said.

“We really need to press that point because then they can’t say we don’t have the money, they do have the money, we just need to appropriate it in the correct fashion.”

InternetXpress library service provides job, computer training

ELIZABETHTOWN — A new service is now providing workforce development, computer training and Internet access to libraries in Essex County.

The Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System, Adirondack Community Action Programs and partners held a launch event for the InternetXpress Mobile Program May 18 at the Colonial Garden Pavilion in Elizabethtown to explain the free program.

A special InternetXpress van will be used to transport equipment, such as laptops and iPads, to the 16 libraries in Essex County, according to Betsy Brooks, information technology director of the Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System.

Eleven people have found jobs with the help of the program in Essex County, according to Brooks. Van drivers assist those seeking work, in part, by helping write resumes and conducting mock interviews.

Brooks said the van was purchased in January and has seen increasing use. But her organization wanted to wait for better weather for its launch event.

The InternetXpress program is a partnership between the Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System, Adirondack Community Action Programs, Inc., New York State Education Department (Division of Library Development) and OneWorkSource (Business and Employment Center). The program was funded by federal stimulus money, according to Linda Todd, a team leader in the Division of Library Development at the New York State Library in Albany.

News of the Week Out-of-towners busted for scamming Walmart PLATTSBURGH — State police have arrested a Colorado pair for an alleged scam against retail giant Walmart.

Martin Beranek, 52, and Michael Underwood, 36, recently returned to Plattsburgh to respond to warrants issued for their arrest in connection to a January 2010 incident. State police allege the two changed UPC codes on items once inside the Plattsburgh store, lowering their prices then purchasing them before returning the items for their full price value. The scam is believed to be part of a plan to defraud Walmart locations along the East Coast.

Underwood is facing a felony assault charge for allegedly running over the foot of a security guard who attempted to stop the pair. He was remanded to Clinton County Jail where he posted a $10,000 bond.

Beranek was charged with third-degree burglary and later released on his own recognizance.

The pair are expected to respond to charges in court this month.

Smoking policy progress stalled at county level PLATTSBURGH — Clinton County legislators are considering a policy that, if approved, would ban smoking and the use of tobacco products on the majority of county properties. The exceptions would be the Clinton County Fairgrounds, Clinton Community College, and the Clinton County Landfill, which would be subject to their own policies, if they so choose.

The issue was recently debated by legislators who are examining changing the count’s existing policy which only requires those who smoke to remain at least 40 feet from county building when doing so.

The legislature is in the process of fine-tuning the proposed policy with the help of Karen Derusha, a senior public educator with the Adirondack Tobacco Free Network, and Deputy County Administrator Rodney Brown.

Winds attributed to MVA MALONE — State police reported Alec H. Friedman, 65, Lake Placid, and Joy A. Kasson, 49, Saranac Lake, were injured June 1 when the vehicles they were operating collided on State Route 30.

Friedman and Kasson were reportedly both traveling south when high winds caused dust to impair their visibility.

The two were transported to Alice Hyde Medical Center where they were treated for injuries.

County eyes ways to help flooded properties

ELIZABETHTOWN — For the third time, Essex County will look to change the assessed value for properties that were affected by the recent rains and flooding.

Charli Lewis, Essex County Real Property Tax Service Director, addressed the members of the Board of Supervisors during the May 31 Ways and Means Committee meeting about what would be required in order to lower assessments for those affected by the storms.

“As you look at these Relief Acts that happened in 2005 and 2007, the county could opt into the program if at least one municipal corporation met the requirements,” Lewis said. “They define that as catastrophically

damaged property. There had to be ten (properties) and they had to be damaged over 50 percent of their assessed value.”

Lewis also said that at present, the county would need the help of state legislation in order to allow county assessors to follow through.

“Taxable status date is March 1,” Lewis said. “By law, the assessors are required to assess property as of their condition as of March 1. If there is a flood, a fault line, a fire, after March 1, it is unlawful to change the assessment until the following March 1.”

Several supervisors spoke up in favor of a resolution asking state senator Betty Little and state Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward to introduce legislation that would allow the county to offer assessment reductions.

“We do have two homes that are greatly affected by the slide in Keene Valley and we have two others that are creeping closer to them,” Keene Supervisor William Ferebee said. “Charli did come over and addressed our Assessor and our Board of Assessment Review to make her statement clear to those guys as constituents come forward looking for assistance in their assessments.”

“I spoke to Sen. Little on this last week to see if there was any kind of possibility that legislation could be introduced to authorize the county’s to enact this,” Moriah supervisor Thomas Scozzafava said. “I mean we have I think two possibly three homes in the town of Moriah that I am certain this has reduced their assessed value by more than 50 percent.”

Scozzafava added that he would be concerned if the legislation did not make it through the state.

“The unfortunate part of this is that if we don’t have this legislation and the county doesn’t enact this, what is going on in your community I am sure and the town of Keene and other communities, that the owners of these property’s are going to pay the full shot on their school — correct? And they are going to pay the full shot on their land in January with no relief,” he said.

“I am hopeful that (Little) will ask for this legislation. I know that throughout her entire Senate district there is a lot of catastrophic losses on personal property so I am hopeful that it will go through.”

PLATTSBURGH — When TNA Wrestling came to town recently, the crowd went wild.

And, when professional wrestler Robbie E. came to town, he had the chance to meet a group of ladies who he couldn’t resist seeing again.

John LaHart, who promotes TNA Wrestling events locally with partner Gary Hathaway, said Robert “Robbie E.” Strauss had the chance to meet with Aeropstale’s Angels, one of several teams signed up to participate in the upcoming Relay for Life at the Clinton County Fairgrounds in Morrisonville.

“We talked at the event about Robbie coming back up to help the girls raise money for Relay for Life and he was all for it. He just wanted to confirm that he could come back and when he found out he could, he was more than happy to,” said LaHart.

“It means a lot to me, bro,” said Robbie E. “Helping out with something like this is one of the great things I get to do with my profession, man.”

Though Robbie E. said he has never had anyone in his life directly affected by cancer, helping those who have is important to him.

“I do though feel for anyone that has to go through something like this and praise how strong and positive they are,” he said, adding he’s looking forward to his return to the area for the event that benefits the American Cancer Society. “This is part of why I love what I

Rachel Guyton, one of the team’s members, was excited to learn Robbie E. was coming back.

“We knew John was working on getting a wrestler to come back for [Relay for Life], but we weren’t sure who. We would’ve been happy with anyone from TNA, but we were really happy to find out it was Robbie E. We all liked him,” said Guyton.

The TNA personality will be on hand at the overnight event and will even stick around for a few appearances on Saturday, June 18. Robbie E. will sign autographs at the FYE store in Champlain Centre starting at 11 a.m. and be there until he heads over to Therapy Nightclub and Sports Lounge on downtown Margaret Street as part of the business’s one-year anniversary celebration sponsored by Therapy and Y106.3 FM. “We’re excited Robbie was kind enough to donate his time to do an autograph signing and be part of our anniversary celebration,” said club co-owner Jimmy Taber. “We’re going to have a lot going on, creating a bit of an expo with all the vendors that work with us and unveiling our new menu.”

“I think it’s pretty incredible Robbie will be here,” Taber added. “TNA is an awesome organization.”

Making appearances like these are what TNA Wrestling is all about, said LaHart.

Holocaust survivor meets Ti students Harrowing tale of hope

fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — A Holocaust survivor, Murray Jaros has seen the worst of humanity.

He’s also seen the best.

“My story is not really about the suffering, but of the people who helped us,” Jaros said. “It’s a story of hope. What’s remarkable is not my story of survival, but what’s remarkable is what others did so I could survive.”

Jaros told his story to a group of Ticonderoga High School students June 2. He came at the invitation of his friend John LaPointe, Putnam supervisor.

“He has an amazing story,” LaPointe said. “I think everyone should hear it. Stalker’s appeal turned down PLATTSBURGH — Mark Gantt, 48, has been denied an appeal by the Appellate Division of the State Supreme Court for his conviction last year on charges of stalking and criminal contempt.

The Plattsburgh man pleaded guilty to charges of defying a court order and stalking a woman. Gantt was sentenced to concurrent prison terms of two to four years for each charge. He was already given a 12-year term related to a string of local burglaries in 2008.

Gantt’s appeal was based on his argument he was denied effective counsel, further stating the guilty plea he submitted was not voluntary.

Gantt will continue to serve his sentence at Five Points Correctional Facility, Romulus, until his earliest release date of May 2020.

Cars collide, New Hampshire woman ticketed PLATTSBURGH — Jason Duell, 30, Plattsburgh, was injured following a two-car accident June 3.

City police stated the vehicle Duell was operating was traveling westbound on Broad Street he collided with a vehicle driven by Rebekah Hebert, 22, New Hampshire. Hebert was reportedly attempting to turn left turn onto Williams Street when she cut off Duell’s vehicle.

Duell was transported to CVPH Medical Center.

He was treated and released.

Hebert was issued a ticket for failure to yield the right of way while making a left turn and driving an uninsured motor vehicle.

With their home destroyed the family worked their way to the United States-sector of Berlin. They lived in a camp for displaced people awaiting visas to come to North America.

In 1948 Jaros received a visa to move to Canada. He was 15 and went alone to Toronto since his parents had not yet been approved for visas. In 1951 the rest of his family was allowed to move to the United States, settling in Schenectady. He soon joined them.

Jaros eventually became a lawyer.

“After the way, while I was back in our town, a number of Nazi collaborators and Nazi soldiers were on trial for war crimes,” he said. “I and a few other kids were able to sneak into the court and watch the proceedings. Watching the attorneys make their case was like watching magic. I decided I wanted to be a lawyer.”

He is a special counsel to the New York State Association of Towns. That’s where he met LaPointe, who is president of the organization.

Jaros has been a member of the Holocaust Survivors Friends and Educational Center in Albany for years. The group provides speakers so people can learn the lessons of the Holocaust. Jaros is the last survivor giving the talks.

“It’s good that students learn about the Holocaust in school,” he said. “I think it helps, though, when they can put a face on it. I lived it. I can tell them what it was really like. It’s important for people to remember this happened so that it’ll never happen again.

“I’ve seen the horrendous and terrible ways human beings treated and mistreated each other,” he said. “I’ve also seen amazing kindness in the face of extreme danger. I know the goodness in people. These are important lessons.”

Ti High English and history classes sat in stunned silence as Jaros related his story.

“As teachers we can only tell our students about the events that happened,” Amy Crannell, Ti English teacher said. “Mr. Jaros can tell us so much more.”

Wadhams United Church of Christ gets facelift before festival

keith@denpubs.com WADHAMS — As Father ’s Day approaches, the Wadhams United Church of Christ is preparing to show off a new look.

The church annually holds its Strawberry Festival during Father ’s Day, this year being held on Sunday, June 19, from 1 to 4 p.m.

As part of the preparation, members and volunteers have been working to renovate the church, a project that started back in 2001 to keep the building, built around 1831, an active part of the Wadhams community.

“The renovated hall will

now host church and community events throughout the years ahead,” Robert Harsh said following a volunteer community work day on April 30. “We sheet-rocked, sanded, painted, raked, cleaned, and sorted items in both the newly renovated kitchen and meeting rooms and in a second-story storage area.”

The early focus of the work was to restore the deteriorated foundation and exterior structure, which Harsh said was funded by a combination of church reserve funds and a grant from the State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation.

“Since then, church and

community volunteers have worked alongside local contractors to provide a fully modernized structure with several meeting spaces and a modernized kitchen facility for church and public dinners,” Harsh said.

Harsh said that the goal of the project has been to keep as much of the historic aspect of the building as possible.

“Wherever possible, the renovation has preserved historic architectural elements that reference the past uses of the hall, including its original use as a dance hall and stables for a hotel that previously stood adjacent to the church,” Harsh said.

Bodine and team ready to take Team USA back to bobsled gold NASCAR driver looks forward to bringing Bodine Challenge back

keith@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — Geoff Bodine was part of the group that got former NASCAR driver and current commentator Kyle Petty to bring his charity ride to the Lake Placid region.

For Bodine, a fellow NASCAR driver, it is something that he has been doing for several years.

Bodine helped form the BoDyn Bobsled Project, which has been building sleds for the American team using his connections with the NASCAR and racing world as well as the world of bobsledding.

“Now that Kyle has been up here, hopefully we can get him to come back for the Bodine Challenge,” he said.

This year, the challenge, which puts NASCAR drivers into the bobsleds for racing down the Mount Van Hoevenberg track, was cancelled. However, driver Tony Stewart came to try out the bobsleds and said that he would like to take part in the next challenge.

“When you come in and go past that village sign, you get hooked,” Bodine said.

“When you see the venues and the sport, why wouldn’t you want to be here?”

Through the BoDyn Bobsled Project, the United States Program vaulted into the international spotlight, highlighted by their victory in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

“Before the last Olympics, we came up with a plan to win the gold,” Bodine said.

“We worked with Whelen and with our other partners to accomplish that plan and now, we have another plan in place already for 2014.”

Bodine said that they plan to improve upon their sled design, which continued to be seen as a leader in the world of bobsledding.

“When I first got involved, I was amazed that we did not have a place that was making American bobsleds for American athletes,” Bodine said. “With all that we have done, I feel like, even though I am 5 feet 7 inches, that I am 7 feet tall. We stand tall behind our sleds, and, like in NASCAR, just because you have won the race doesn’t mean that you do not improve on your sled and what you are doing.”

Bodine said that along with bringing the USA team to new heights, the BoDyn Project has helped the sport as a whole.

“Indirectly, we have helped programs throughout the world,” Bodine said. “It’s crazy because all the athletes throughout the world like us, even though we beat them. In NASCAR, when you beat someone, they don’t like you.”

Bodine said that while there are many exciting possibilities on the horizon, the project is still seeking funding to continue its mission.

“The catch in all of our plans is the economy,” he said. “We need the support, and we have actually met with a lot of people while here for Kyle’s event that have stepped up.”

TUPPER LAKE — An environmental group claims that ambitious sales estimates for a large resort in Tupper Lake are out of sync with market realities.

Protect the Adirondacks Attorney John Caffry argued June 2 during a state Adirondack Park Agency hearing on the proposed Adirondack Club & Resort that sales estimates for resort properties it intends to sell are “drastically overstated.”

The L.A. Group prepared the market analysis for ACR in 2005 and updated it again in 2010. During that time period, representatives of the group predicted that lots would double in value.

Caffry argued that the real estate market for resort properties crashed over that time period and that the projected increase in valuation is not consistent with market trends. During a cross examination of the L.A. Group’s Jim Martin, Caffry called the methodology “random.”

“Can I get estimates by throwing darts at a board?” Caffry asked.

Martin defended the process he used but admitted that he could not recall where some of the data came from, since much of it was gathered more than 5 years ago.

Administrative Law Judge Daniel P. O’Connell grew visibly irritated by the nature of some of the questions, and at one point asked

Caffry to “stop it.”

Another witness also testified that estimates for resort sales are accurate. Terry Elsemore, the president of a resort marketing company called Fractional Strategies, testified that the marketing plan and sales goals for the resort are reasonable.

“I do believe the numbers are achievable if the vacation home real estate market continues its current recovery,” he said.

The same witness panel will convene again today to continue to discuss economic impacts on the public and municipalities.

This hearings were being held in Tupper Lake.

The testimony was part of the third and final round of hearings. If all goes well, the APA could make a ruling on whether to issue a permit on what would be the largest development project it’s ever approved.

Event raises funds, awareness for ALS

keith@denpubs.com KEESEVIILE — An event was recently held to bring awareness and support to a disease that has become increasingly present in the North Country.

The Adirondack Association for ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) Awareness, along with the Mountain Riders Motorcycle Club, held its annual bike rally and poker run on June 4.

“We had approximately 100 bikes, which was big,” Kelly Murphy, event volunteer with the organization. “It was a great day and a great event.”

Murphy said that the event has grown from a fundraiser for one person to a collective effort to help the needs of dozens of locals who suffer from the degenerative disease, also known as Lou Gerhig’s Disease.

“This event was started when John Nixon was diagnosed,” Murphy said.

“A short time later, Don Duffy, who had worked to help put on the event, was diagnosed. Every year, we keep learning about more and more people with the disease.”

Murphy said that within the last six months, they have been made aware of six more local residents who have been diagnosed with ALS. “I never thought that there would be so much of a need,” Murphy said. “We

do not have a center here in this area, so we are now not only promoting awareness of ALS, but we are also working to give immediate assistance to those who need it and we are so happy when we can assist in any way.”

The organization tries to help ALS patients with medical and household expenses wherever they can.

“One person who was diagnosed, his sister saw one of our flyers,” Murphy said. “She contacted us and we were able to help out.”

Murphy said that while the fundraising event is held on an annual basis, the commitment to raise awareness of the disease is a year-round program.

“We want to keep promoting awareness,” Murphy said. “It is now at the point that all of the money that we make at the event is spoken for as soon as the event is done.”

Obituaries Karen Poulet LeMay November 22, 1947 — June 1, 2011 Karen Poulet LeMay, daughter of Ruth and Paul Poulet, earned her angel wings after a year battle with cancer.

Karen grew up in Witherbee, NY, and after her marriage, moved to St. Hubert, Quebec, residing there to the end.

In her immediate family, Karen leaves: her husband, Jacques; her daughter, Melanie

and granddaughter Jasmine, age 15; her son, Michael, his wife Evelyn and their son, Zackery, age 2 months; four sisters, Yvonne Mendez, Fla., Sheila Zelinsky, NY, Deborah Feinstein, Ca., Denise Martinez, Fla., and their family.

Karen also leaves behind many friends and relatives from both sides of the border.

Paul Smith’s VIC ready for summer season PAUL SMITHS — The Paul Smith’s College VIC is once again open for business after getting the axe during the state’s fiscal crisis last year.

The VIC is open for the summer and will operate daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Labor Day. The extensive trail system remains free and open to the public.

Regular features at the VIC Visitors Building will include an art exhibit showing works by local artists, informational presentations, a retail space and a volunteer staffed help desk.

Youthful Lions fall in D softball final, Bombers blue after walk-off slam PLATTSBURGH — After two close contests, the Lady Panthers jumped out early and cruised to an 18-2 victory over the Lady Lions June 3, again defending their Section VII/Class D title.

The Panthers scored in each of the first four innings, then scored nine runs in the sixth inning to close the door on the Lions.

Lindsay Brace collected four hits in the game, scoring three runs and driving in five.

Brace also closed out the game for the Panthers on the mound, striking out seven and allowing only one hit in the final three innings.

Chelsea DuShane started on the mound for the Panthers, striking out six in four innings of work while allowing two runs. She also had two hits and a pair of runs batted in, including a double.

Ashley Morgan had a pair of doubles and two runs batted in, while Hailey White had two hits and runs driven in and Amanda Wolf had two hits and drove one run home.

Every started got on base at least twice for the Panthers, with Taylor Booth the only player not to record a hit (walked twice, scored once).

For the Lions, Kaitlin Coats scored the opening run of the game for the team, scoring as a courtesy runner on a triple by Clare Harwood. Kearsten Ashline scored the Lions other run on a wild pitch.

Ashline, Harwood, Alyssa Sullivan and Kylee Cassavaugh had the only hits for the Lions.

Class C finals Ticonderoga 6, Lake Placid 5

A pitchers’ duel turned into an offensive explosion in the Class C championship game between the Lady Sentinels and Lady Blue Bombers June 1, with the biggest blast being saved for last.

After Lake Placid scored three runs to break open a 2-2 tie in the top of the seventh, Sentinel senior Taylor Ward watched as Melissa Pockett, Autumn Olcott and Andrea Rich all reached on walks. Then, Ward belted a game-ending, walk-off grand slam to give Ticonderoga a one-run edge and the sectional title.

Ward finished the day reaching base twice, once on a walk, scoring twice and driving in the four biggest runs of her high school career.

The Blue Bombers opened the scoring in the top of the first, when Liz Leff walked, followed by base hits from Jenna McGreevy, Mackenzie Kemmerer and Alexis Nichols, who drove in Leff.

In the bottom of the second, Megan Campney led with a walk for the Sentinels, and was driven home on a groundout by pitcher Jordan McKee, who struck out 11 batters in the game.

An inning later, the Sentinels took a 2-1 lead as Ward came home after Jessica Blodgett, Megan Campney and Kate Palandrani were all walked, with Palandrani earning the RBI. Both teams were unable to muster any further offense until the seventh inning, when

In a rematch of the opening game of the MVAC season, the Lady Panthers again were able to score a convincing win over the Lady Warriors May 31, punching their ticket to the Class D championship game.

Kyli Swires had the lone hit and run scored for the Warriors, which came in the third inning.

Class B semifinals PHS 9, AVCS 2

The Lady Hornets scored in each of their final three at-bats to advance to the Class B championship game with a win over the Lady Patriots May 31.

Cieara Duquette opened the scoring for the Hornets with a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth inning. The team then scored four runs in the fifth inning and three in the sixth.

Charisse Abellard had three singles, while winning pitcher Kristin Fisher and Taylor McMahon each had a pair of singles and Alexandra Betrus tallied an RBI. Fisher struck out eight in the win.

Alexis Facteau had two of the Patriots four hits in the game, while Brittany Friedrich took the loss on the mound.

Peru 8, Saranac Lake 5

The Lady Red Storm scored four times in the final two innings, but they needed seven.

The Lady Indians advanced to the Class B finals May 31 by seven runs over the second, third and fourth innings.

Brianna Padron opened the scoring for the Indians with a bases clearing, three-run double in the bottom of the second inning.

Paige Moore had three hits for the Indians, while Taylor Rock added a pair and Dani Dayton struck out seven batters to earn the win.

Megan Kilroy had a single, double and drove in a pair of runs in the game for the Red Storm.

Two years, two finals, two heartbreakers for Beagles PLATTSBURGH — The last time he saw the Beagles, Chazy sophomore pitcher Kyle Bissonette walked four batters and got only one out on a pickoff play.

In his second outing against them in the Class D championship game June 2, Bissonette again walked four Westport/Keene batters — over seven innings of championship work.

Bissonette surrendered only two hits and one unearned run while striking out nine to lead the Eagles to their first sectional baseball title in school history.

“I wanted to come out, throw my hardest, work ahead in the count and stay positive,” Bissonette said. “I wanted to play as hard as I could. I was amped up for this game and wanted to be better than I was the last time I faced these guys.”

“I was proud of Kyle for him to come back and throw the way that he did,” Chazy head coach Brian Norcross said.”

The top of the Eagles’ lineup did most of the damage against the Beagles, with Ricky Osier scoring two runs, Kaleb Snide scoring twice and driving in the opening run of the game on a first inning double, and John Tregan driving in the final run of the game on a single in the third inning.

“He (Beagles pitcher Sam Earl) threw me a curve ball and I jumped on it late and it was the perfect hit to allow Ricky to score,” Snide said about his double. “Winning a sectional title in baseball is something that has never been done here, and it is great to be part of the team that finally accomplished that goal.”

“It was just one of those games,” Westport/Keene co-head coach Don Markwica said after the game. “we came out a little tight and once we got settled in, we needed the bats to heat up and it never happened.”

David Quaglietta broke up Bissonette’s no-hit bid with one out in the fifth inning with a single that as just out of the reach of Osier at second base. James Bell, who had reached twice on errors, had the Beagles other hit on a sharp line drive down the left field line in the sixth.

The Beagles put six runners into scoring position, scoring one (Bell) on a balk call in the fourth inning. The team was 0-for-8 with four strikeouts when runners were in scoring position, while Chazy was 3-for-10, advancing 10 runners to second base or further.

Sectional tennis tourney held PLATTSBURGH — Beekmantown’s Mark Price and Eric Mitchell spent the 2011 regular season in boys tennis as teammates.

At the Section VII individual championships May 31, they were looking at each other on opposite sides of the net.

A battle between the top two players on the Eagles squad ended with Price earning a straight-sets, 1-and-4 victory to claim the sectional title.

Both players earned a spot at the NYSPHSAA state championships, held at the site of the U.S. Open, the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows.

Also earning a trip in boys singles was Seton Catholic’s Jan Bin Park, who faced Plattsburgh’s Adam Emery in the consolation finals and scored a matching 6-3 straight-sets win.

In doubles, the Saranac brothers team of Shawn and Corey Bissonette scored a 3-and1 victory over Dolan Riley and Nick Hansen from Lake Placid.

In the girls title match, Peru’s Stephanie Omlin stormed out to a 6-2 first set win over Emily Carlin of Beekmantown.

However, Carlin was able to force a break in the second set, earning a 6-4 win and evening the match at one set apiece.

Omlin then matched her opening set score, earning a 6-2 third set and match win to turn the two-time runner up into a sectional champion.

NCCS’s Alanna Cruz won the consolation finals, beating Rachel Leitsch of Saranac in straight sets, 3-and-1.

In the doubles championship, the top seeded duo of Paige Southwick and Kristen Langr of NCCS scored a 6-3, 6-4 victory over the Lake Placid team of Georgie Knox and Natalia Smith.

Beekmantown's Alexandra Provost and Bailey Waterbury dropped only one game in each of their two sets in earning the consolation win against Peru’s Samantha Banker and Abby Higgins.

“We just never got the big hit,” Markwica said. “We had the chances, but never got the hit that we needed.”

James Bell collected three hits, including a pair of doubles, and drove home six runs in the victory with a two-run single, groundout and a bases clearing double in the sixth inning.

Sam Earl also connected on a double in the win, while Kevin Russell struck out 11 batters in earning a complete game victory.

Pitch, hit and run winners named KEESEVILLE — The Keeseville Youth Commission recently held its annual Pitch, Hit and Run competition.

Jeffrey Miller was the pitch, hit and run winner in the boys 7-8 division, earning the overall title.

In ages 9-10, overall champion Patrick Durgan won the pitch and hits events, while Connor Devins was the winners in the run category.

William Coats won the pitching and hitting parts of the competition for ages 11-12, earning the overall title. Yandon Shay was the winner in the run.

Kyle Miller swept all three events to win the overall title for ages 13-14.

For girls ages 7-8, Jordyn Pelky was the overall winner, winning the hitting event and co-winning the pitching event with Erin Welch, Caitlan Valliers and Lexie Prins.

Welch also won the running event.

Janelle Simpson, who won run event, was the overall winner in girls ages 9-10, while Katelynn Miller won the pitching event and Laura Norman won the hitting event.

Tamson Brunell swept all three events in the 11-12 girls division, while Priscilla Coats did the same in the 13-14 age division.

The thin, green line, within the Blue Line “Perhaps most of all, the outdoor experience offers us a chance to explore and shape our values, attitudes, and behaviors towards the environment and ourselves. It instills a sense of ownership and personal responsibility.”

The above statement, taken from the Seventh Annual Report of the NYS Forest, Fish and Game Commission is as applicable today, as it was when first published in 1906.

At that time, New York’s forests and streams were just beginning to recover from an unrelenting onslaught of environmentally damaging practices, which ranged from illegal lumbering to deer poaching to squatters settling on state land.

There was even an early environmental advocacy group formed to prevent the pilfering of spruce for ornamental use in camp construction. Appropriately known as the Society for the Preservation of Adirondack Spruce, the group claimed there was, ‘Barely a spruce tree to be found, larger around than the size of a man’s wrist; due to the demand for architectural ornamentation."

There were similar efforts underway at the same time, which sought to protect black bears, to restore beavers and to put an end to the commercial harvest of fish and game.

In 1880, Governor Alonzo B. Cornell appointed eight Game Protectors in New York state. They were the state’s first environment law enforcement force, dedicated to protecting the state’s woods and waters, and the fish and game.

In 1899, Governor Theodore Roosevelt claimed, “I want as Game Protectors men of courage, who can handle the rifle, axe and paddle; who can camp out in the summer or winter; who can go on snowshoes, if necessary; who can go through the woods by day or by night without regard to trails.”

In 1964, the NYS Conservation Department renamed the Game Protectors as Conservation Officers, and in 1970 the newly minted NYS Department of Environmental Conser-

vation again updated the title to Environmental Conservation Officers, or ECO’s. In 1971, they were vested with police powers.

Although the title's been changed several times, their duties remain essentially the same. The men in green Stetsons are entrusted with the responsibility, “To protect the environment, natural resources and people of the State of New York through law enforcement, education and public outreach.”

In 1976, the department created a separate Division of Law Enforcement and in 1982, the Bureau of Environmental Crimes Investigation was formed to provide a special investigative unit within the Department of Law Enforcement.

This unit, with 45 staffers statewide remains focused on large scale hazardous waste dumping, endangered species trafficking and undercover operations.

Currently, there are over 320 ECO’s on duty, including the Marine Enforcement Unit and a K-9 Unit. They are responsible for everything from checking a fishing license to the transport of protected species, to the illegal dumping of hazardous waste along a quiet, back road.

At first glance, being an ECO may seem like an ideal occupation. However, it is also considered one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. Officers often deal with armed suspects, who may be addled by drugs or al See HACKETT, Page 27

Alanon enters summer hours

Tennis league set to start WILMINGTON — Local area tennis players are invited to join the start of a mixed doubles tennis league. Play begins Thursday evening, June 16 at the Whiteface Club and Resort Tennis Center (“soft” courts) at 5 p.m. and continues for nine weeks.

Doubles teams of WFC members and non members are welcome to enter. It is an “open to all” league.

An entry fee of $40 per team is required and includes court time, balls, discounted beverage specials (that’s the spirited part) and prizes at the end of league play.

The first session on June 16 will be more of an organization one with some play and the opportunity for those needing a partner to team up. Regular formal league play begins the following Thursday evening.

If appropriate, teams may be further organized for same skill-level competition.

In January 1981, Idaho Game Wardens Wilson Elms and William Harlan Pogue were shot and killed while they attempted to arrest a poacher named Claude Dallas. They were ambushed at the poacher’s campsite.

In November, 2010, Pennsylvania Wildlife Conservation Officer, David Grove was fatally shot near Gettysburg, after a shootout on a rural road with a deer jacker he was attempting to arrest.

The incident in Pennsylvania occurred in the dark of night, as New York ECO’s were involved in Operation Dark Night, an effort to combat deer jacking in 57 of 62 counties.

That deer jacking enforcement effort eventually resulted in 137 defendants charged with 274 misdemeanors. Fortunately, there were no injuries.

“We don’t require boats,” he said.

This year ’s derby features more than $750,000 in cash and prizes, including the $300,000 “Mystery Fish” three Starcraft boats rigged with Yamaha outboards, and $3,000 guaranteed to each of the first-place finishers in the seven species categories.

The basic registration fee is $40. This year ’s event kicks off June 18 at midnight and continues through 4 p.m. June 20, with a dozen weigh stations scattered throughout the lake. People can register at outlets around the Champlain basin right up until the start of the derby.

Other prizes include GPS units from Lowrance, Gas Grills from Gander Mountain, gift certificates from Traxstech, Able, and Big Jon, as well as over $12,000 worth of lures from makers like Sebile, Eppinger, Challenger, Mooselook, Lhur Jensen and Grizz Baits.
