Youth cast their lines in E-town

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — Elizabethtown held its annual Youth Fishing Derby May 31, giving dozens of children a chance to experience the excitement of the outdoors.

About 25 children from the Elizabethtown-Lewis School District participated in three age groups, catching nearly 75 trout stocked in Big Hollow Pond near the Cobble Hill Golf Course.

The event was supported by the Elizabethtown Fire Department, Stewart’s, Grand Union, Adirondack Outdoor Company, Essex County Fish Hatchery, Park Motor Inn, Buckley and Alton White, Elizabethtown Fish and Game Club, and volunteers on Memorial Day. Awards included:

State deal allows parks to re-open

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — The John Brown Farm State Historic Site is one of several parks in the region finally open after state officials agreed to restore their funding last week.

The site was one of 14 historic sites and 41 parks across the state Gov. David Paterson announced in February would be closing as of April 1.

The parks, which are all operated by the state Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, were mostly in operation by last weekend, however, after the State Legislature approved a bill Paterson introduced to fund their operation.

The deal involved offsetting $11 million in parks funding with a $74 million cut to the state Environmental Protection Fund, a special fund set aside for environmental stewardship programs and state land acquisition.

The bill also creates additional fees for businesses that create hazardous waste.

The vote on the bill was largely across party lines in both houses with all Republicans voting against it.

“I’m supportive of using environmental funds to keep our recreational facilities open, but I voted no on this bill because it’s an issue that should be addressed as part of a complete budget,” said State Sen. Betty Little. “The budget is now two months late, and

obviously it’s not only visitors of our parks that are frustrated.”

Both Little and Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward have expressed support for keeping state parks open in the region, not only those operated by OPRHP, but also those run through the state Department of Environ-

mental Conservation, some of which have also been targeted for closure.

“Parks make money for New York State and should not have been cut in the first place,” said Sayward.

The John Brown Farm had originally been scheduled to open May 1 - Oct. 31, but its temporary removal from the yet-to-be-approved state budget kept the site unstaffed until May 29.

Brendan Mills, site manager at the John Brown Farm, said he was “glad to be open and doing our job.”

According to Mills, about 60,000 people visit the site each year, though not all visitors take the tour of the farm buildings, for which there is a small fee. The grounds of the site are open year-round and are accessible at no cost.

Naj Wikoff is coordinator of John Brown Coming Home, a committee that organized events surrounding last year ’s 150th anniversary of Brown’s death and burial. The organization co-sponsored a commemorative event at the farm May 8 that drew 100 people.

“We are greatly indebted to Senator Little and Assemblywoman Sayward along with the many, many people who sent in letters and emails to keep the John Brown Farm and other sites open,” he said. “We are glad that this hallowed site will remain open, and we hope it will never be closed again.”

illsboro was a busy place this past weekend, there were many of our summer residents here to open camps and several just here for the holiday weekend. Most of our local restaurants are now open for business check the access channel 3 for details.

Many thanks to Larry Allen and his new Cemetery committee that has taken an interest in making the Gilliland Cemetery look like someone cares about its upkeep. He was also assisted by Ann Choate and her senior girl scouts that made the wreaths and placed the flags. This community does show great respect for our military persons that have served our country in all wars to assure us of our freedom.

The Reber cemetery also had a nice addition this holiday time, a beautiful stone bench was installed in memory of Brennan Hathaway, if you are going by, stop and take a look.

Happy to report that Danny and Cathy Sweatt, their two sons and guest along with

mother Betty Sweatt and her sister and brotherin-law, eight in all, recently had a most enjoyable vacation down in the Hawaii Islands for around eight days. They took in a lot of famous sights and had a wonderful time.

We know it is summer when Ethel’s Dew Drop Inn is open for business, as it was this past weekend. Please note her nice addition of a more permanent roof and three sides over her outdoor tables. Received word that there will be a graveside memorial service for Marguerite (Marge) Beekman on Wednesday, June 16 at 1 p.m. in the Memorial Cemetery with a reception following the burial at the Congregational Church to meet the family.

he Beautification Committee has been hard at work in the hamlet, planting flowers, pulling weeds and making the place look great. The Essex Farmers Market will be operating again this summer on Sundays, starting at 10 a.m. on the green behind the town hall. The market will feature locally grown fruits and vegetables along with excellent cheeses and meats.

There will be a public information meeting on the hamlet sewer project June 8, at the town hall at 6 p.m. Jim Dougan, the construction manager from the engineering firm, will be there to answer questions.

Residents on Leaning Road were at the last town board meeting to express an interest in lowering the speed limit, which is currently 55.

The road is rather narrow, with deep ditches in sections, and has a pre-school, houses right on the road and lots of farming. Let the town board know if you believe a lower speed limit would be more suitable; I certainly think so.

hen I first moved to Keeseville, I moved right into the middle of the public water “controversy” and found how heated things could be in a small community. A year and a half later, there are still water grumbles, but I’m happy with things personally, so I stay out of it.

Well, the potential is there for a new controversy with the proposed closure of the Civic Center. I would like to suggest before any sides are drawn up or mud is slung that we keep open communication. I found that every time I called for information about the water situation people talked to me, pleasantly even. Being a simple, good ole boy I like the adage “sugar attracts more flies than vinegar,” and while I really don’t want any more flies this summer, the point is important: Let’s talk people – nicely even!

Speaking of communicating properly, last week I said I would include information about the Spring Fling; well, ten pages from my column, Matt put the information in the same issue (oops, sorry Matt!) So to repeat: Spring

I had a pleasant conversation with Mary Anne Goff, director of the library. The Library Sale will be Friday, June 11, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, the 12th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Monday June 14 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. They are still welcoming donations, but please no textbooks, magazines, Readers Digest condensed books or damaged books. As someone obsessed with books I can tell you that last year’s sale was great. The library has many events planned for the summer starting in July, including art exhibits, children summer reading/activity program, a garden event as well as changed summer hours. I will provide more information in later columns.

ere's a reminder about the upcoming vote on the municipal building project, which takes place Tuesday, June 15 from 12 noon to 8 p.m. at the Town Hall. I've written enough about this to hope that the basic outlines of the project will be familiar to most Valley News readers by now, so I won't repeat them here. But if you're a new reader and would like to learn more, drop me a note at the e-mail address above and I'll be happy to send you links to columns and informational articles on the project's background.

One way or another, this is something that affects us all, and it's very important that all registered voters show up and let their voices be heard on the issue.

The Chamber of Commerce has launched the "Buy a Boom" campaign to raise money for the Independence Day fireworks display at Lee Park, which will take place this year on Saturday, July 3, starting at 9:30 p.m. Boxes have been set up for donations at Ernie's Market, Everybody's, Me and My Girls Café, the

Bank, and the Marina, and checks can be made out to the Westport Chamber of Commerce.

Among the possibilities—under $15 could go toward a color burst, $15 could get you two color bursts with a loud boom, $30 might end up in a big whistling umbrella that showers down, $60 could make happy faces, stars, and hearts. For $100 or more, you could get a piece of the grand finale, with lots of colors, bursts, and booms.

A rocket will chart the fund's progress toward the goal of $4,000, and you can watch its progress in the glass window on Bill McHone's door. Donors will be listed there by name or initials (unless requesting anonymity), though the amount given won't be revealed. The chart will be updated regularly.

We do love our fireworks! This display is always one of our biggest moments of civic pride each year. Please stop by one of our local businesses and give generously so that we can all enjoy the excitement together.

AAG to host Diane Leifheit exhibition SARANAC LAKE — There will be an opening reception for “Taking Notice,” an exhibition of new pastel paintings by Diane E. Mean girls provoke suicide

By Susan Doolittle The following items of note appeared on this date in the pages of our local newspapers.

The Essex County Republican 1897 NORTH ELBA - The inscription on the headstone which marks the place where “John Brown’s body lies moldering in the grave: was cut by a Kansas man, B. A. Barrett, for many years a marble worker, but now a druggist of North Topeka did it.

“How well do I remember dressing down the stone and cutting the inscription!” said Mr. Barrett. “It was in January, 1860; about six weeks after John Brown had been hanged. At the time I was running a tombstone establishment at Wadhams Mills, Essex County, N. Y. thirty-five miles from the Brown homestead, near North Elba. Mrs. Brown engaged me to do the work while she was at our place on Christmas attending an abolition celebration in her honor. She told me that she had a suitable stone, and that I could come up there and do the work.

“Two weeks later I went there. I found, resting against the side of the little farmhouse an old tombstone bearing the name of John Brown. It was not the John Brown of abolition fame, but his grandfather, an old Revolutionary soldier.

The slab had been removed from the grave of the grandfather to make room for a monument, and John Brown took it home. He told his family that he wanted it to mark his grave. The stone was a soft freestone slab about three foot high, and three inches thick.

“The weather was intensely cold, and I had to work in the kitchen. I was just a week at the job, and the Brown family-what was left of itwatched me work all the time. There was no

verse or anything on the stone. Mrs. Brown wanted to put one on, but when we measured up we found that it would take all the space to give the names and dates of birth and death of John Brown and his four sons. Brown’s name was placed on the top and the sons came next in order of death.

“I tell you they fed me well that week. Never had better eating in my life. But I will tell you confidentially that the hospitality of the Brown family was about the only redeeming feature.

None of them would ever be selected to participate in a beauty show. As a whole, I never saw a more ugly lot of women. But they were kind in disposition, and that covered a multitude of short comings. Mrs. Brown was a large, masculine woman, with coarse features. But she did know how to cook.

“I returned to my home after completing the work. The stone was not set during the winter, but I was up to another abolition celebration on July 4 the same year, and saw the stone at the head of the grave. Brown is buried on his farm; not in the North Elba Cemetery.

“No, I did not cut the inscription on the big bolder at the foot of the grave. That was done by Andrew J. Daniels, who learned his trade under me. When I enlisted in the army he took charge of the shop. In the spring of 1865 he went out to the Brown farm and did the lettering on the bolder. The rock is about the size of an ordinary house, and it stands at the foot of the grave, or perhaps it would be better to say that the grave stands at the foot of it. Daniels is now postmaster at Westport, of the same county, unless Axeman Bristow of Kansas, has cut his official head off.

hoebe Price was 15 years old, beautiful and an Irish transfer student at South Hadley High School in Western Massachusetts. After dating a senior football player for a brief period, Phoebe became the target of a group of girls that have since become known as the Mean Girls. The Mean Girls are seven girls that have been charged by District Attorney Elizabeth Scheibel. The mean girls are not what you might expect; they are pretty, popular, good students and good athletes.

“My investigation revealed unrelenting activity directed toward Phoebe designed to humiliate her and to make it impossible for her to remain at school,” said Scheibel. “Her books were routinely knocked out of her hands, objects were flung at her, her face was scribbled out of school photographs, she was called filthy names on a daily basis and many threatening text messages were sent to her.”

The day that Phoebe committed suicide a group of the Mean Girls drove by and hurled filthy names at her and hit her with a can of Red Bull as they drove away. Shortly after this last attack, Phoebe Prince committed suicide.

The cruelty did not end with Phoebe’s suicide either. Some of the girls used Facebook to continue to attack the dead teenager. Community residents became angry when no action was taken and many parents came forward to share their own stories regarding bullying.

Shockingly, the girls have shown no remorse and several parents of the girls say the girls were just being teenagers. An additional outrage was that school officials said they knew nothing of the bullying and practically ignored

Village wise to ban smoking To the editor, I am writing to compliment the Saranac Lake Village Board of Trustees for their unanimous decision to amend Local Law #2010, thereby not allowing smoking in village playgrounds and youthorientated recreation areas and not permitting “spitting” of tobacco juice in public parks. June 8 is Hospice Radio Day To the editor, It is hard to believe that High Peaks Hospice Radio Day has been

When a local television crew came out to talk to students, most of the students knew about the bullying towards Phoebe and

By Scot Hurlburt towards other students. As soon as the TV crew was out of sight, one of the Mean Girls came up and slammed the girl who and been interviewed against a locker and punched her in the head.

Phoebe is not alone; school bullying-related suicide is all too common and may need to be addressed by sources outside the school. It is almost incomprehensible that even one young person should die over something that is entirely preventable: bullying. It won’t be easy; many new age bullies are popular, smart, good students and good athletes. To compound the problem, many have parents that support their bullying behaviors.

Teachers and school officials are mandated reporters when they learn that a child is being abused. While bullying does not fall under the legal definition of abuse, in my opinion it is abuse. Bullying relies on secrecy and denial and as long as bullying is not intentionally dealt with, it will continue. Remember, all kids count.

Search narrows for VA clinic sites Satellite clinic to be built in Saranac Lake

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — The locations where veterans in the Adirondacks receive their medical care may soon be changing.

Officials from the Albany Stratton VA Medical Center held two town hall-style meetings May 26 and 27 in Elizabethtown and Saranac Lake, and announced the latest development in their plans to replace the veterans’ outpatient clinic at Elizabethtown Community Hospital with sites in both communities.

According to Mary-Ellen Piché, director of Stratton VAMC, a site in Saranac Lake has been chosen for a build-to-suit facility that will act as one of two satellite clinics. An addition of 2,600 square feet, the amount of floor space sought for VA clinics, will be constructed alongside the Branch and Callanan Building on Depot Street.

A contract for the site had yet to be finalized as of May 28, but Piché said it is expected to be signed within the next week. If so, the clinic could be ready to open as early as this fall.

The plan, Piché explained, is to hire one team of clinic staff, including a VA-certified physician, nurses and clerical staff, and have them split their time between two sites: one in Saranac Lake and another near Elizabethtown, both of which will be open two or three days each week.

Most of the staff has already been hired, she noted, but the search for sites to house the clinic, which has been ongoing for more than a year, has been a more daunting challenge.

“I don’t think we anticipated the difficulty in finding a location,” Piché said, “but we’re continuing to pursue that.”

would like to see a VA clinic established in the Tri-Lakes area.

Piché said a need has been identified in the Tri-Lakes area for a clinic, but to open a separate clinic requires an act of Congress.

Splitting one clinical team between two satellite clinics allows the two sites to act as one clinic while hopefully meeting the needs of veterans in both communities.

Meanwhile, the search continues for a new site in the Elizabethtown area. Piché said they have narrowed the search to two sites, one in Westport and another in Port Henry, with negotiations with the property owners ongoing.

Many in attendance at the Elizabethtown meeting May 26 questioned the status of the former State Police barracks in Westport, one of the sites reportedly under consideration.

Adrienne Frank, the MVAC Caroline Manager at Stratton, confirmed the facility as one still under consideration. She said there were “some challenges” in getting it to meet federal standards and the needs of the clinic, but negotiations with the owner regarding renovations remain open.

“We will remain at Elizabethtown Community Hospital until we are ready to make a transition to the new site,” said Piché, noting how ECH officials are allowing the clinic to stay there until it is ready to move.

Adirondack Carousel may soon become reality

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — A volunteer effort to bring an Adirondackthemed carousel to downtown Saranac Lake is seeking additional input from the community as it nears a major milestone.

“Our goal is to break ground this year,” said Marge Glowa, chair of the Adirondack Carousel board of trustees.

Public meetings will be held June 8 and 15, 7 p.m. at the Saranac Lake Library to discuss the status of the Adirondack Carousel project and the support the project needs to become a reality.

The brainchild of local woodcarver Karen Loffler, the carousel is planned to be housed in an enclosed, timber-frame, decagonal pavilion with space for community programs and educational workshops.

The village of Saranac Lake has already allotted a site for the building in the William Morris Play Park, conveniently located near the business district and Adirondack Scenic Railroad train depot on the corner of Bloomingdale Avenue and Depot Street.

Instead of the traditional horses, it will feature 23 unique wooden figures depicting wildlife native to the region, all hand-carved by volunteer artists from across the country. Examples include a blue heron, hermit thrush, bobcat, skunk, beaver, red fox, bass, and river otter, many of which are already completed and on display in various art galleries around the North Country.

Last year, it was estimated the project would cost upwards of $1.2 million to build. According to Glowa, however, volunteers have worked aggressively to reduce the overall cost to less than $1 million.

The organization has already raised more than $400,000 for the project, which, combined with local in-kind donations and state grants, has put the project nearly within reach.

“We still need some in-kind donations and volunteers to make it

happen,” said Glowa, “but a lot of good stuff has been happening.”

One particular need she mentioned was for a trailer to store construction materials at the site. A crane and operator are also needed during construction.

“A lot of the interior construction will be done by volunteers,” she said.

If all goes well, construction on the building could begin by midAugust with hopes of having the structure enclosed by winter. If that’s accomplished, Glowa said, the carousel could be open as early as Memorial Day 2011.

According to Cornell, the project began nearly four decades ago when he was living in New York City as a director of the award-winning New York Shakespeare Festival. He started writing the play with the intent of seeing it produced as a historical drama for television, having already produced one historical drama script for CBS. “This was a second project that had just gotten off the ground, but was cut off,” he explained.

The drama has sat “on the shelf” since then, he said, until Treadwell, an experienced playwright and actor at the Depot Theatre, offered to help finish the play.

“We’ve worked on it for over a year; sometimes over the internet, sometimes for days at a time,” Cornell explained. “I have written other stuff, but I have never written a play that’s been performed before.”

The multi-part play is still a work in progress, but the first part, an hour and a half long in itself, is finished.

It tells the story of Isaac and Arbella Johnson, financiers of the journey of about 1,000 Puritans who established what would become

the Massachusetts Bay colony of 1630. Both Isaac and Arbella were among hundreds who died within the first year in the New World.

“It’s very dramatic and exciting,” said Cornell, noting how he attempted to bring the story out of the strictly historical realm and focus on the “tribal intensity” the Puritans underwent as they struggled to sustain themselves in an untamed land; struggles so intense they led a peaceful, God-fearing group to criticize each other and take up arms against other English settlers nearby.

“We are trying to tell the truth of the story,” Cornell explained, “but we take dramatic license with it.”

The staged reading on June 6 will feature 24 actors, many of whom have performed in Depot Theatre productions or off-Broadway shows in New York City. Though there will be few props or costumes, the performance promises a stunning first look at this original work.

“It’s amazing how compelling a story you can tell with the actors reading their parts in this way,” Cornell said.

The performance is made possible in part by a New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Grant, administered locally by the Arts Council of the Northern Adirondacks.

Adirondack forest fires: a clear and present danger

W

ith less than a one-tenth of an inch of rain fallen over the region in the past month, the dangers of a major forest fire are readily apparent. Currently, with no rain on the horizon, the Adirondack forests remain a tinderbox.

On the morning of Memorial Day, it appeared that fire had finally arrived, as a smoky haze covered the region and obscured the distant mountaintops.

Fortunately for the Adirondacks, the smoke and haze were delivered on winds hailing from Quebec, where 52 fires had already burned more than a quarter million acres.

According to news reports, the majority of the fires were burning near La Tuque, Quebec, about 150 miles northwest of Montreal.

It isn’t the first time Canadian fires have affected our weather. In 2002, smoke from fires in the Lac St. Jean region of Quebec darkened the sky over Ottawa and Montreal and the smoky haze was evident as far south as Washington, D.C. The history of forest fires in the Adirondacks is significant, and stretches back a century to the most devastating fires that occurred around the turn of the 20th century, when the fires of 1903 and 1908 consumed nearly a million acres of forested lands.

The Adirondack’s primary fire seasons have always been the spring and fall of the year, when there is an abundance of dry leaves, tinder and winds to fan a fire.

I can recall several instances of fighting fires as a teenager, when the pay was meager but the food was always good.

It always seemed that youngsters got the worse part of the job and were rarely assigned to the front lines.

Typically, we were used for “mop up detail,” which required raking over a burned area to check for coals or an underground fire. We discovered the hot spots by checking for heat with a bare hand, which always brought blisters. We would then dig up the forest duff, spray it with water from an Indian Tank strapped on our back and move on.

Firefighting has not advanced much since the 1970’s, as the same methods are applied today.

In 1903, a 72-day drought brought on forest fires that scorched more than 600,000 acres of Adirondack lands, centered near Lake Placid. At the time, fires also burned in Schroon Lake, Lake George, Olmstedville, Newcomb, Ausable Forks, Saranac Lake and Clintonville.

The NY Times reported at the time, an estimate of ground burned at more than 1,000,000 acres, or about one-fifth of the entire territory. The fires were so consuming that cinders were reported falling as far away as Albany, 150 miles to the south. Smoke from the fires eventually reached Washington, D.C. Five years later, in 1908, the Adirondacks experienced the most devastating fires to date as the blazes burned almost continuously for nearly four months across the Park.

By September 1908, both New York City and Quebec City to the north were blanketed in clouds of smoke from fires in Hamilton, Herkimer, St. Lawrence, Franklin, and Essex counties. The smoke was reportedly so thick, that ships were forced to use foghorns in NY Harbor.

By the end of the month, fires had consumed lands from Lake Lila east to Sabbatis and all the way to Horseshoe Station near Tupper Lake. Other fires burned from the vast Bay

Pond Park of William Rockefeller all the way to Saranac Lake village, consuming over 150,000 acres of forested land.

The great fires of ’08 resulted in new laws to detect and prevent forest fires, that were enacted in 1909. To protect the forests, locomotives could only burn oil from April 15 through Oct. 31 to prevent the sparks that were responsible for so many fires. Loggers were required by law to limb everything left behind and new systems of fire surveillance included the construction of fire towers and state regulated fire patrolmen.

The new legislation also provided the governor with the power to close both public and private forests during times of high fire danger. Despite such efforts, by 1910, nearly one-third of the northern forests had been cut over or consumed by fire. Today less than 10 percent of the Adirondack forest is considered old growth.

Patriots upended in sectionals

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com AU SABLE FORKS — AuSable Valley’s postseason was cut short as the Eagles of Beekmantown pulled off a 9-3 upset in the Section VII Class B baseball quarterfinals May 28.

Beekmantown pitcher Brett Palmer stymied the fourth-seeded Patriots with 10 strikeouts, allowing just 3 hits and four walks in the complete game win.

The Patriots held a 2-1 lead after the first thanks to an RBI off a single by Jordan Bezio and a sacrifice fly by Alex LaFountain.

A series of defensive miscues by AuSable Valley in the third allowed the Eagles to tie, then take the lead with a two-run single by Evan Bull in the fourth.

The Eagles, however, proved steadfast on defense, highlighted by a diving catch by Luke Weaver to end the fourth when the Patriots had runners on second and third.

“We played an excellent game where we hit the ball through the whole game,” said Beekmantown head coach Jim Knight, “and we played solid defense without making the mistakes that have hurt us throughout the year.”

“They made some beautiful plays to take us out of some big innings,” said AuSable Valley head coach Randy Douglas.

Beekmantown exploded in the fifth with a three-run homer by Jon Manor. Manor would finish with three hits and three RBI. Palmer helped his cause with two hits and three RBI. Weaver reached base

on all four of his at-bats, adding a triple and a single.

Though the Eagles came in as the fifth seed and had lost to AuSable Valley in the regular season, Knight said his team had been looking forward to sectionals.

“I’ve told them that the playoffs are a different animal,” said Knight, “and if you show up to play down the stretch, you can do big things.”
