Rebels with a cause Motorcycle rally to benefit families suffering with ALS

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com AU SABLE FORKS — Motorcycle enthusiasts will soon have an excellent opportunity to enjoy a scenic ride through the Adirondacks and a barbecue dinner, all while they support some neighbors in need.

The fourth annual ALS motorcycle rally and poker run is scheduled for May 30, sponsored by the Mountain Riders motorcycle club.

The event originated in 2007 as a benefit for the family of Johnny Nixon, a star athlete at AuSable Valley Central School who was diagnosed with ALS in October 2006 at age 28.

Though Nixon passed away in December of 2007, the club continued to hold the event, raising funds for families dealing with an ALS diagnosis.

“When we started this four years ago, we were thinking we’d just be doing it once,” said Kelly Murphy, one of the event’s organizers, “but each year it seemed like there was a new case in the area.”

ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a degenerative neurological disease that progressively reduces the ability to use muscles in the body. Eighty percent of people with the disease die within five years of being diagnosed.

“The goal is to promote the awareness of ALS

while being able to raise funds for area residents who are suffering with ALS,” Murphy said.

According to Murphy, there have been eight cases of ALS diagnosed among local residents in the past four years, some of whom are still living.

The event has drawn between 70 and 85 bikers and raised about $8,000 each year. A portion of this year’s proceeds will go to the Greater New York chapter of the ALS Association, but the funds will primarily be distributed to the families of three local people with ALS. “We try to take care of the local families first,” said Murphy, “because they have so many expenses.”

The 100-mile ride begins on Main Street in Au Sable Forks and takes motorcyclists north to Plattsburgh, then across to Lyon Mountain.

One of the past beneficiaries of the event, Don Duffy, is a former special education teacher and girls hockey coach at Saranac Lake Central School. In his honor, riders make a stop at Ga-Ga’s in Bloomingdale before returning to the starting point.

Following the ride is a barbecue dinner, the cost of which is included with each rider’s registration. Non-riders can also purchase the dinner for the $15 registration fee.

Regardless of whether participants ride, there are plenty of other reasons to get involved, such as the silent auction, horseshoe tournament, and 50-50 raffle. A live band, Lucid, will provide entertainment in the evening.

t is hard to believe we are at the Memorial Day weekend again. Hopeful the community turns out for the traditional Ceremony at the monument site. Hope you notice that the cemetery staff has the grounds ready for this special time. This is a time to remember our loved ones and especially those that served in any of our military services.

Recently seventeen family members of Howard & Irma Halen’s made a special trip to Washington D.C. to visit the Arlington Cemetery where they are buried. Vicki Dickerson reported that this was a very meaningful trip and visit, great family gathering.

A reminder that the Knights of Columbus are sponsoring their annual Breakfast Buffet on Sunday, May 30 from 8 a.m. to noon. The price is $7 for adults and $3.50 for children with a deal of $20 for an immediate family.

It was sad to learn of the loss of our young pharmacist, Peter Avery. He has decided to relocate closer to his home and family, we will miss his kindness in serving our medical needs. Hats off to Jim Bowen, the owner, as he got right on to the

recruiting of coverage and a replacement person as of the middle of July.

Hopeful that the public shows their appreciation by doing business with the Adirondack Apothecary Drug Store. They try very hard to meet our medical needs as well as carrying other much needed items.

We were also sad to learn of our supervisor resigning from the position. She has served us well and we truly hated to see her give up the job, but we respect that she knows what is best for her in carrying out the duties of this office at the present time. We wish her well in the future.

The Willsboro United Methodist church will be serving a Roast Beef supper on Wednesday, June 2, beginning at 4:30 p.m. with a $8 charge for adults and $4 for a child. une is fast approaching, and with it comes the start of a busy summer in Keeseville. The Spring Fling, Methodist Church Yard Sale, Farmers’ Market, Library Sales are among some of the many events just around the corner. These events offer an opportunity to get rid of items no longer used for many people. A strong word of caution though – as a librarian I often receive donated books, which is great unless the books are damaged or marked up badly. Basically, instead of throwing them away, people transfer the job to someone else. This is annoying and time consuming and sometimes costly.

Pastor Edie Poland finds the same thing happens at the Methodist Thrift Store. With a volunteer staff and no profit margin it can detract a lot from their charitable mission if they have to throw out donated items. Please, if it is not gently used – throw it out yourself. The Thrift Store serves an important function to our community.

Pastor Poland urges families who are the

victims of house fires to contact the Church or Thrift Store any time to receive needed items to replace those lost. Whether to receive or give, call the Thrift Shop at 8349918 or the Church at 834-7577. People interested in donating again gently used books for the upcoming library sale should contact the Keeseville Public Library at 834-9054. It is best to contact prior to dropping off books in order to double check if there are any particular types not needed or to make sure the staff is prepared to receive donations.

On June 1, the traveling Van Hovens will present a program at the Belden Library on the national parks of the southwest United States. This starts at 7:30 and refreshments will be served.

The long-awaited sewer project in the hamlet is getting underway. The funding is

all in place, the lawyers are contented and last Thursday the board room at the town hall was crowded with contractors, government officials and engineers for a pre-construction conference. The contractors have been given their notices to proceed but you won’t see much activity for a few weeks yet.

I’ll keep you posted as this project unfolds.

In other good news, the Department of Health has approved plans for the new septic system at the Whallonsburg Grange.

There will be a 2000 gallon tank, leach field and 750 gallon grease trap for the future kitchen.

Now that the weather seems to be settling down, it’s time to plant corn and beans. I used to grow bush beans, but found that pole beans have a much better flavor, take up less room, and are a lot easier to pick. I use tepee-like structures, but pole beans will also grow happily on fences or trellises.

Some have brilliant red flowers and are quite decorative, but I like a variety called Fortex, which may not be flashy but produces delicious beans all season long.

It's hard to take that as anything other than a ringing endorsement by the community of the school board's and the superintendent's performances in coming up with a disciplined budget under exceptionally difficult circumstances.

Congratulations are in order to the board as a whole, and in particular to its president, Mrs. Alice LaRock, who was reelected unopposed to another five-year term, and whose leadership of the board has been so productive. We should also recognize the efforts of Dr. John Gallagher, our superintendent, and Mrs. Michele Friedman, our principal. Their knowledge and expertise have done much to enrich our school and our community. Thanks for working so hard for us—and for making it possible for our great teachers and staff to do their important work, too.

ur recent spell of surprisingly hot weather has turned many people's thoughts turn toward spending more time outside - often with their family pets. It's important to keep in mind that, not only are your tomatoes growing nicely and fragrant blossoms are on the trees, but there is also more opportunity for your pet to be at risk of poisoning due to growth of toxic plants and potential exposure to common household chemicals. Familiarizing yourself with common yard and garden hazards and taking some preventative measures now can help you to keep your pets safe all summer long. The Animal Poison Hotline (APH) and PROSAR International Poison Center have some valuable tips: Lawn care products such as fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides and fungicides are a potential risk for your pet if they are inappropriately stored or applied incorrectly. Dogs are especially good at finding poorly stored containers, chewing them up and drinking or eating the contents. Dogs may be exposed to insecticides by various means, such as digging up treated earth or chewing on pellets. Common springtime plants can be a source of trouble as well: Tulips (bulbs), lily of the valley and azaleas can be deadly to pets if ingested in large enough quantities. Here are some general rules of thumb relating to both chemical and herbal toxins: Read all package instructions carefully before any applying products to your lawn or garden, be sure you are mixing or applying chemicals correctly, check with your local garden center about the safety of your garden plants, and be sure to close the top tightly on all containers and put them in an area where your pets do not have access to them.

A brief history of the future

A

ccording to scientists, mathematicians, and educators – hopeless nerds, all – the future hasn’t happened yet. These so-called “intellectuals” insist that “the future,” by definition, is always one step ahead of us.

Elitist poppycock, I say. If we believe the nonfiction documentary “2010: The Year We Make Contact” – and I don’t see why we shouldn’t – John Lithgow, the late Roy Scheider, and a bunch of Soviet cosmonauts led by Helen Mirren are, at this moment, sitting in a spaceship orbiting Jupiter, learning that communists and capitalists really can get along, if they’d just listen to each other. Even hopeless nerds have to admit that’s pretty futuristic.

If we look around, we can see plenty of other less dramatic, but equally obvious, signs that the future is now. Some of these signs are terrifying – cars that parallel park themselves, for instance, and the breakfast menu at Subway – but the future has at least one thing going for it: everything is sleeker than ever before. And, as commercials have taught us, the sleeker any concept or item, the better.

I’m not just talking about tennis rackets, aesthetic philosophies, and famous actresses’ evening gowns, either. I’m talking about America’s most beloved form of entertainment, on which we spend literally quintillions of dollars annually: the semiweekly newspaper column.

Take “The Shallow Observer.” You

might notice that this week’s edition – the first in a while, because I’ve been on the lecture circuit all spring, denouncBy Dan Leonidas ing scientists, mathematicians, and educators as hopeless nerds at colleges across the country – is shorter than usual. Shorter, yes, but so much more potent that children and the elderly should consult a physician before reading it.

Indeed, if the old “Shallow Observer” was a 24-ounce energy drink, the new “Shallow Observer” is a two-ounce energy shot. It might not taste as good, but it won’t leave you feeling bloated, and your head will still be spinning five hours from now.

So welcome to “The Shallow Observer” of the future. If its awesome power doesn’t crush your mind like so much rubbish in a trash compactor, you just might learn to like it.

T

he men and women at Horace Nye helped build the greatest country in the world: the United States.

They are part of the “greatest generation” that Tom Brokaw wrote about. They are American heroes.

They came from Moriah, Willsboro, Westport, Elizabethtown, Ticonderoga, Schroon Lake and just about every town in Essex County. They were the brave men and women who joined military service during war and fought to keep us all free.

They are our parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles that helped to raise each one of us. They were our neighbors, our teachers, our volunteer firemen, our coaches, our policemen and so much more. They helped build the middle class in America that largely did not exist before World War II. Frank is 85 years old and has blue-grey eyes and a devilish smile. Frank was just 18 and graduating from high school when he joined the service at the dawn of World War II. “I learned that the military had a twisted sense of humor early on,” he said. “My training was with the combat engineers. As we sailed to our destination I was surprised to learn that I would be going to India as an engineer, the kind that drives a locomotive, not the kind that builds bridges.”

At just eighteen, the responsibility for operating that locomotive was terrifying.

The Japanese constantly shot at the train and Frank showed me a nasty scar that ran across his hand and up his arm, the aftermath of a Japanese bayonet attack.

“What I remember most was returning to New York City at the war ’s end,” Frank said. “They really put on the dog for us. I can still taste that porterhouse steak.”

Alfred is 83 years old and is a large, imposing man with a powerful handshake.

Alfred was stationed at Okinawa, where many Japanese prisoners were held.

“The prisoners were quiet and humble,” he recalled. “I don’t think that they had yet come to grips with losing the war.”

Pete is 82 and is a friendly man who is

kind to everyone.

Pete was at Pusan during the Korean War, an area that came under several major attacks.

“It was so cold that

By Scot Hurlburt many men got frostbite,” said Pete. “The conditions were horrible; to this day I’m not too fond of cold weather.”

Harris, 85, is a retired Lt. Colonel and flew C-46s and C-47s during World War II. In September 1942, Harris boarded a train in Willsboro and got off in Texas. He intended to be a pilot but the Army had another idea in mind. In the end, Harris won his right to fly and completed his pilot training. He shipped out to the Pacific Theater and landed at Okinawa. Harris had a number of close calls during the war including landing in a rice paddy on a return flight from China. After the war, Harris was a lifelong advocate for area veterans and helped many North Country soldiers get what they needed and deserved.

There are many other veterans at the home that gave their all for us and they too deserve our gratitude and our respect. The nursing home is full of American heroes.

They were faithful patriots, solid community citizens and now, in their senior years, they hold an important piece of Essex County and national heritage within them.

Most are facing health challenges and need our support, and they have earned it. In my mind, the only difference in the residents at the Horace Nye Nursing Home and the rest of us is they are a little farther down the road on life’s journey. Remember, all kids count.

Memorial Day Parade planned for Elizabethtown ELIZABETHTOWN — The American Legion Posts of Elizabethtown and Lewis are organizing the annual Memorial Day parade and Memorial Service to take place in Elizabethtown Monday, May 31. Job creation among chief concerns, Owens says

That’s the point emphasized by Rep. William L. Owens, D-Plattsburgh, during a town hall meeting at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh May 22, at which hundreds turned out to engage in a discussion of issues facing the 23rd Congressional District.

Owens, who was elected to the Congressional seat last November following former Rep. John M. McHugh’s appointment as Secretary of the Army, gave the audience an overview of his last six months in office. In his address, Owens stated three main issues are at the forefront of the minds of people with whom he has spoken.

“I hear people talking about jobs. That was true during the campaign and that’s consistently true today. They talk about the deficit, they talk about health care,” said Owens. “Essentially in that order.”

With the North Country’s unemployment rate hovering at approximately 10 percent, Owens said he understands the need for more good-paying jobs topping people’s chief concerns. The War on Debt Act, which Owens introduced into the House of Representatives in late April, would be a way to help combat that, he said, and potentially increase jobs in the U.S. The legislation, as proposed, would include the creation of “War on Debt Bonds” that would require 30 years to mature before being redeemed. Proceeds from the bonds would be used to reduce the amount of public debt in foreign countries, particularly China, said Owens.

However, healing the economy will take time, said Owens.

“After World War II, the debt to [gross domestic product] ratio was 121 percent. It took us 20 years to get it down to 40 percent. It took us another 30 years to get it down to a surplus, which occurred at the end of the Clinton administration — the first time that occurred since the end of World War II,” said Owens.

“There is tremendous difficulty in this process.”

During the remainder of the open forum, Owens addressed issues including immigration reform, health care and corporate bailouts, hearing concerns and viewpoints from several constituents. The dialogue opened that day is what will help move the Congressional district and the nation in the right direction, said Owens.

“I think we got people really engaged in the debate, which was what I really wanted to do,” the congressman said following the forum.

“Now, what I’m hoping is people will think about this over the next couple of days or weeks, that they’ll get back to us with some good suggestions as to what we can do.”

Owens said the tone of the discussion was “very civil, even when people clearly didn’t agree with me or other members of the audience.” He also noted he would have liked to

have heard from representatives of the Upstate New York Tea Party, an organization whose mission is “to advocate for reduced government spending, lower taxes, and less government.” The group has been publicly critical of Owens’ stance on issues, including the War on Deb Act, which UNYTEA chairman Mark L. Barie has previously called “ a cynical attempt to fool North Country voters in to thinking that he is a fiscal conservative.”

Owens said though the group has alleged he has not made himself publicly available enough, he disagreed.

“I think I’ve been as accessible as I can possibly be in my tenure in office,” said Owens, citing hundreds of visits in the past six months to places including Plattsburgh, Saranac Lake, Fort Drum and Watertown. “And, I intend to continue that.”

As for UNYTEA, Owens said the group — which chose to protest Owens presence outside in the Angell College Center Plaza — was invited to come into the forum “like everyone else.”

“I have no idea why they would choose not to come in and ask questions and engage in the debate,” Owens said.

When reached for comment, Barie stated UNYTEA members chose not to go inside due to an e-mail allegedly circulated prior to the forum accusing UNYTEA members of plotting to disrupt the forum and “stack” it with members of their organization.

“Under the circumstances, I viewed our presence at the forum as a recipe for a confrontation and asked our members to stay away,” said Barie.

Master Gardener volunteers offer tips

Play tells story of Puritan colony

SARANAC LAKE — Beginning June 5, and throughout the summer, Essex County Master Gardener Vounteers will be on hand at the Saranac Lake Farmers’ Market to answer composting questions. Also, Master Gardener Volunteers will offer a program during the summer to develop a relationship wtih farmers while producing compost.

Ten consumers will be issued buckets to fill with kitchen waste such as fruit and vegetable scraps. No meat, dairy, or plastic items will be accepted. The consumers will then return to the Farmer ’s Market each week and exchange their full bucket for an empty one, allowing the consumer to get rid of waste and the farmer to make and utilize the compost.

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — AuSable Valley took one step closer to their goal of a Division II title May 22 as they defeated the Blue Bombers 15-11 in CVAC baseball.

The Patriots were down 11-10 going into the sixth inning, but managed a comeback in a back-and-forth game with plenty of hitting.

“We’ve got some real good hitters on our team” said Patriots head coach Randy Douglas. “Our seniors are clutch; they’re true baseball players.”

Jordan Bezio and John Sikandar each had three hits for AuSable Valley and combined for three RBI. Curtis Loreman, A.J. Gordon, and Alex LaFountain, Sawyer Taro and Dustin Miller each added two hits.

The Blue Bombers also had the bats going however, getting three hits apiece from Chris Orsi and Skyler Comins. J.P. Morrison and Ryan Myers each added two hits, and Will Tennant hit a 2-run triple in the first and a big 2-run double in the fifth to help Lake Placid regain the lead.

“They’re a scrappy bunch, and I wish them the best in the [Class D Sectionals],” Douglas said of Lake Placid. “Every year I come up here it’s like this; you just can’t put them away.”

The Blue Bombers took an early 4-0 lead in the first with hits from five of their first six batters, but the Patriots fired back with a six-run inning in which Lake Placid committed three of their six errors.

AuSable Valley improved their record to 10-4 with the win, taking a step closer to a tie for first with Ticonderoga for the Division II title.

five hits and two walks in the final four innings. Tennant, charged with the loss, struck out five and walked three through six innings.

Residents, legislators seek balanced APA

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com TUPPER LAKE — A coalition of state representatives and local leaders from the Adirondacks met with residents here last week and brainstormed ways to improve economic conditions for communities inside the Blue Line.

The Adirondack Caucus held the second in a series of town hall meetings at Tupper Lake High School May 20 in an effort to hear suggestions from the public as they work to establish a special “economic zone” in the Adirondacks.

Assemblywomen Janet Duprey and Teresa Sayward headlined a panel that also included some officials in local government.

Duprey said one of the main goals of the Caucus is to establish a program that will offer tax credits to small businesses within the park, even those with as few as two or three employees.

Garry Douglas, president and CEO of the Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce, praised the idea of an Adirondack caucus as a way to get strength in numbers.

“The state has acknowledged consistently that this area is a unique area,” said Douglas, “and it has a unique responsibility to tackle the economic sustainability of the communities in the park, whether that’s taken from a

special zone or some other means.”

Several people in the audience took the opportunity to comment, many addressing concerns about the APA permitting process as a deterrent to businesses.

Jim LaValley is president of Adirondack Residents Intent on Saving their Economy, a grassroots group of volunteers who pooled

their resources to renovate and re-open the Big Tupper ski area. He said enough is being done to make sites available for development, but not enough is being done to quell the fear of potential developers.

LaValley was one of several people to point to the ongoing adjudicatory process surrounding the proposed Adirondack Club and

“There are another two handfuls of business looking to move into this region,” said LaValley, “but they’re waiting for the ACR to be approved.

Sayward mentioned the possibility of trying to establish an “economic arm” to the Adirondack Park Agency that would allow economic impact development projects to be weighed in the review process and hopefully allow such projects to be permitted faster.

Some hinted the addition of economic-focused staff at the APA may be timely amidst the pending retirement of Steve Erman, the agency’s former Special Assistant for Economic Affairs.

“We’re going to be looking at how to fill that position,” said APA Executive Director Terry Martino, who called the concept of an economic “branch” at the APA “something we would encourage talking further about.”

Martino called the dialogue at the meeting “refreshing” and noted some of the ideas currently being considered within the APA to benefit communities in the park, such as using the money collected from penalties and fines in a “planning fund” to be used by Adirondack towns and villages.

“I think the comments tonight were fantastic,” said Duprey, expressing optimism for reform through collaboration.

MENDHAM, N.J. — Kathleen, a bright eyed teenage girl stood up from her desk as she finished an English class Thursday. Minutes earlier, she had discussed a composition assignment with her teacher.

Although resembling a prep-school student, Kathleen had a different background. Just eight months earlier, she was shooting heroin daily and snorting coke, and was ”on the run” from police — and when picked up on drug charges, she assaulted a police officer and kicked out his patrol car window.

Standing in Daytop Mendham adolescent substance abuse rehabilitation center, she talked of how her future now looks very promising, and how she looked forward to college and a career in psychology or social work. Her transformation, she said, was due to the Daytop program.

Town of Essex farmer Sandy Lewis, a retired Wall Street executive, is proposing to establish a similar program in Essex County. His preferred site is the former Essex County Home in Whallonsburg, not far from his organic farm operation.

Lewis is seeking community support for such a facility, a necessary first step before the state will allow it to open — so he sponsored a trip for county officials to visit the rehab center in Mendham, N.J. May 20.

Lewis County Supervisor David Blades, a former state Trooper, said he was surprised with the courtesy, attentiveness and thoughtfulness that the teens demonstrated, particularly those who were reputed to be members of urban gangs.

Blades was also a school principal and BOCES administrator.

“All my preconceived notions about rehabilitation have been blown out of the water,” he told the teens. “I know you’re going to be very proud of what you’ve accomplished in life.”

Essex County Assistant District Attorney Brian Felton said he was impressed by how the former addicts took responsibility for their actions, whether it was the behavior in their past life, or now freely admitting to other behavior violations like littering, or snubbing others.

“It looks like the program is really making a difference in each of their lives,” he said. “Each teenager is in a different phase, and you can detect a marked difference — it’s very telling to the program’s success.”

He said he was surprised, as a prosecutor and county Drug Court facilitator, over their sensitivity to others’ needs and feelings, openly talk about their own issues, and listen intently to both peers and adults.

Lewis: Proposed teen rehab center could be a model for others

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com ESSEX — Local organic farmer and philanthropist Sandy Lewis said Friday that the cost of his proposed addiction treatment facility wouldn’t be shouldered by local taxpayers — and it could serve as a model program to train social workers and rehab center managers in effective rehabilitation techniques.

Lewis hosted a trip of county officials to Mendham, N.J., May 20 to visit the Daytop adolescent substance abuse rehabilitation center, to which he has contributed substantially. The trip was sponsored to show the officials the benefits of such a facility, for both its clients and its host community. Those who took the trip said they were impressed with the Daytop program and how it was apparently changing teenager ’s lives dramatically.

Until this week, Lewis had not directly addressed the question of financing the proposed facility, which has left county officials guessing. Friday, he made his intentions known in a phone call to Denton Publications.

“County finances are not involved here,” he said. “We don’t want county involvement, we just want their support.”

Lewis cited Daytop Mendham’s finances as a model that could be followed. Daytop Chief Financial Officer Jordana Zeger said Thursday that a combination of state and federal grants and private donations and corporate endowments launched the Mendham facility.

The annual operating expenses, which she estimated to be about $4.5 million per year, also draws on a variety of sources, she said.

Most of the sum is spent on local payroll.

The Daytop residential facility is authorized to accommodate 70 teenagers, and there’s a waiting list, Daytop Executive Director James Curtin said. The current population includes 58 residential students and 12 in day school. Curtin said no clients are admitted to the program that are either overtly violent, and no sexual offenders are accommodated — fears common to host communities.

accepted in Mendham, one of the nation’s seven most affluent communities. An average three-bedroom home in Mendham, they said, is worth $1 million.

Zeger said that the Daytop center ’s operating costs are paid by a combination of sources. About 81 percent of the money comes from state and federal programs underwriting rehabilitation, 14 percent comes from insurance company and HMO reimbursement, four percent from public assistance, and one percent from families paying directly for the treatment.

No portion of the sum goes toward a mortgage, as a religious organization leases the spacious plot of land and buildings to Daytop for $1 per year.

Although Daytop officials offered a financial outline Thursday, apparently Lewis had not shared his financial plans for the proposed facility with Essex County supervisors, as those officials attending a Ways and Means Committee meeting Monday said they were in the dark.

“Is he financially going to back this situation? Is he looking for the county just to endorse it? Is he looking for the county to build

it?” asked Randy Douglas, chairman of the county Board of Supervisors. “I don’t have the answers to all of those questions.”

North Elba Supervisor Roby Politi, chair of the county Ways and Means Committee, aired a similar view.

“It is somewhat premature at this time to be considering anything other than the conceptual overview,” he said.

At the very least, Lewis was indeed seeking to garner support for the concept of a local treatment center. Routinely in New York State, municipal and community support of proposed health care facilities must be documented and submitted to the state and federal agencies before the centers or clinics are approved or granted a license to operate.

At the same time, another question looms: the facility’s location.

Lewis’ preferred site for the proposed treatment center is the former Essex County Home. Located in Whallonsburg, the sprawling brick building is owned by the Leaveners Community Foundation, a nonprofit Kansas-based organization which is seeking to develop a respite center for health and humanitarian workers.

Foundation President Erik Kilgren said Monday night that the group plans to continue their development effort.

“We have no plans at this time to sell the Whallonsburg property,” he said.

But Lewis said this week that he might be facilitating an offer that would be difficult to

refuse — or he might locate the treatment center elsewhere.

The fact that the old County Home property is adjacent to his farming operation has made it the prime location for the proposed facility, he said, noting that clients of the center could work on his farm and gain new skills and experiences becoming close to nature.

The old property includes the “North Farm” and “South Farm” land — totaling about 1,100 acres. These two land parcels, which exclude the old County Home grounds, are owned by Robert Thall and are together assessed at more than $650,000.

Lewis also said this week that the proposed facility could be a training center for prospective or existing employees of rehabilitation centers nationwide.

These adult students, he indicated, could learn the Daytop principles that county officials witnessed firsthand on May 20 — social workers and teachers reaching out to former addicts in a non-judgmental way, creating structure in the teenagers’ lives, engendering attitudes of caring and mutual respect, while heightening the youths’ emotional sensitivity and self-awareness.

“The issue is, does our community want to save children’s lives up here in upstate New York?” Lewis asked.

LAKE PLACID — The Adirondack Community Trust is pleased to announce that it is once again accepting applications for the Uihlein–Ironman Sports Fund of Lake Placid. A total of up to $15,000 in grants and scholarships is available.

The Uihlein–Ironman Sports Fund of Lake Placid provides program support to nonprofit sports organizations that expose area youth to summer and winter sports that foster our next generation of competitive athletes. It also provides grants to competitive young athletes with regional, national and international promise.

Required Erosion Control Training offered for contractors

WESTPORT — The Essex County Soil and Water Conservation District will present the required four-hour Erosion and Sediment Control training for contractors and developers June 18, 8 a.m. to noon at the Essex County Fairgrounds. The training will be presented by Essex County Soil and Water Conservation District Staff.

This training is required for all contractors working on projects that disturb more than one acre of soil and have a storm water permit from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. The permit will require that contractors moving dirt at those sites to have at least one employee to have a card showing course completion. The cards will be good for 3 years and then will have to be updated.

Contractors and developers will have to pre-register for the training to receive credits.

Bill Johnson, the Assistant Deputy Director at the NYS Office of Cyber Security and Critical Infrastructure Coordination, explained how many of the homes of Little’s six-county district, roughly 73 percent, already have access to some form of broadband service, defined as internet service with speeds of at least 768 kilobits per second.

About the same number of households is within the coverage area of wireless phone service providers with 3G capability, which allows wireless broadband internet connections on computers and hand-held devices.

Still, there are more than 14,000 households in the North Country with no access to either service. Most are in communities central to the Adirondacks.

“A lot of the unserved areas are very low den-

sity,” Johnson explained; “up to 15 people per square mile.”

Also, more than 40 percent of those unserved homes are understood to be seasonal homes.

Dr. Melodie Mayberry-Stewart, chair of the NYS Broadband Development and Deployment Council outlined some of the state’s goals in bringing the state up to speed with other parts of the world in terms of its broadband network.

The goal is not only to make broadband more accessible to underserved areas, she explained, but also to encourage more households to utilize the service.

“It has to be affordable and they have to understand the value and how it will impact their lives,” she said.

To make broadband more accessible and affordable, a series of grants have been made available through the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Round one of the grants was distributed last December and included projects to establish broadband networks in Jefferson, St. Lawrence, and Franklin Counties.

Several entities, both public and private, are currently submitting applications for Round 2 of the grants, which are expected to bring even more funds to the region.

Among those entities is CBN Connect, a private nonprofit devoted to expanding broadband in Clinton, Essex, and Franklin Counties. Howard Lowe, director of Economic Development at SUNY Plattsburgh, is president of its Project Advisory Board.

“We’re committed to making sure that our rural areas have the broadband access to be competitive in the global marketplace,” said Lowe, who noted broadband expansion is key to encouraging young people to stay in the region.

One of the growing trends among young people, Lowe said, is that many are becoming accustomed to “having their computer in their pocket” through 3G coverage.

“That’s not doable in much of the region, and we have to find a way to make that happen if we’re going to keep our communities sustainable.”

Lowe said CBN Connect is currently working on a Telemedicine network that will connect hospitals in Saranac Lake, Malone, Elizabethtown, Plattsburgh, and St. Regis with a 260-mile ring of fiber-optic network line, some of which could be leased to internet service providers.

“We have the funds to begin building that network later this year,” said Lowe, “maybe this fall.”

CBN Connect Executive Director Julie West said the organization has also applied for a Round 2 grant in hopes of laying down new fiber through Warren, Washington, and Hamilton Counties.

“We will not be a service provider to end users,” she explained. “We will be a transport for service providers to end users.”

The proposal for the 1,023-mile loop is one of many projects throughout the North Country that will await announcement of the Round 2 grant awards, expected sometime this fall.

May 29, 2010 Space available at Wadhams yard sale WADHAMS — For the past three years, a community-wide yard sale has been part of the annual Wadhams Strawberry Festival. This year ’s festival is scheduled for Sunday, June 20, 1-4 p.m. at the Wadhams United Church of Christ. The festival will include a sale of baked goods and some crafts, a drawing for paintings by local artists, music and, of course, delicious strawberry desserts.

On Campus McGannon selected for summer program PHILADELPHIA, Penn. — Saint Joseph’s University has announced that Margaret McGannon of Au Sable Forks has been chosen to participate in the university’s Summer Scholars Program, which started May 17 and will last for 10 weeks throughout the summer. Through this program, McGannon will work with Kim Logio, Ph. D. , of the Sociology department on a scholarly project entitled “The Effects of Child Abuse on Adulthood.”

Participants in the program receive a $3,200 stipend to support their work, which is conducted largely independently with regular meetings with faculty to discuss progress.

Amanda Goff graduated from ElizabethtownLewis Central School. She is also a graduate of SUNY Potsdam with a Bachelor ’s degree in Studio Arts and Business.

Paul De Cicco graduated from Turnford School, England. He then went on to graduate from Willis College, Ottawa, Canada, as a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer and is currently working at IBM. An October 2010 wedding is planned.

Correction The April 10 issue of Valley News featured an article entitled “Lewis pitches plan for addiction center.”

This article incorrectly stated that little work has been done on the old Essex County Home near Whallonsburg and suggested the owners might consider selling it. In fact, Leaveners Community Foundation, the nonprofit that owns the building, is not interested in selling the property. Leaveners Community Foundation has hired more than a dozen contractors who have renovated the buildings there with an APA-approved septic system. The north building in particular has been renovated with a life safety system, new electrical wiring, underground electrical service, and a new heating system.
