f you missed the multi-family yard sale for Lakeside Preschool last weekend, you have a chance to play catch up at the Depot Theatre's Annual Colossal Rummage Sale, which runs this weekend, Friday to Sunday, May 28-29. This is the premiere event of its kind around these parts—which is especially fitting this year, since the Depot is boldly offering an entire season of premieres. The Depot brings a lot of people to our lovely town every year, but this year, the theatre deserves extra support for its courage and artistic integrity.

The hours for the sale are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday. The sale features household goods, appliances, electronics, tools, furniture, garden supplies, books, decorations, and of course lots and lots of wonderful clothing, including a large selection of ladies' formalwear. You're sure to find something that you will treasure for years to come. The proceeds go to support the Depot, which is a non-profit, and will help pay for the line-up of shows as well as for free events like the winter play-readings

and an array of theatre education programs.

On Thursday, June 2, the Westport Library Association returns with another evening of enchanting music, Songs from the Great Vintage Musicals, featuring the incomparable Russell Ames on piano. The event is free and open to the public, and you're invited to come and sing along. I can pretty much guarantee that if you can remember the words, Russell will know the tune. His knowledge of classic show tunes (and everything else) is encyclopedic and he plays them all with his special brand of lightheartedness and mischief. If you ask nicely he might even throw in a little Tom Lehrer.

Next time, I'll report on the public hearing for the proposed development at the Treadwell estate, set for Wednesday, May 25. So don't worry if you missed it. And congratulations to the school board and to WCS Superintendent Dr. Gallagher on the passage of the school budget. I'm proud of the way our community debated the issue without losing sight of the fact that we're all neighbors.

andered downtown this past Saturday and Sunday. Arbro Military Surplus had its grand opening and did a very nice job with it. The store looks great and has a lot of wonderful products very reasonably priced. While thinking of grand openings, our own Family Dollar is currently celebrating its grand reopening after a remodel. Hopefully the AuSable River won’t overflow its banks again and come for a visit and mess things up.

I noticed the flower box outside of the library looked really nice and fresh. It seems that earlier that day the Keeseville Elementary Outdoor Education, made up of first through third graders, planted flowers.

Thank you for adding such beauty to our community.

This Saturday, May 28 marks the reopening of Gofflower on Division Street. Be sure to stop over and see all the beautiful flowers that are available.

There will also be the Harmony Golf Tournament to benefit the Elks and the Keeseville Free Library. For details about this event,

June 17 and 18 mark the dates for the annual book sale at the Keeseville Free Library.

So now is the time to bring in those gentlyused books, that you have already read, to donate to the sale.

Summer is here and the village is starting to blossom and come alive. Renovations are now going on at the Jaycee Park. More hands make for easier jobs.

Don’t forget to keep working on the paving stones. Anybody who lives in the community house or apartment is encouraged to enter.

Weather actually has been fairly nice lately; wonder upon wonders, I even mowed my front yard. Now for the trim work which I leave for my son as he loves playing with the weedwhacker. And then I’ll tackle the backyard. But knowing me, I will finally get the back completely mowed just in time to have to do the front again. All in all, it is so nice to be getting fresh air again and able to enjoy our community as it continues to blossom.

an can become a master Gardner and produce a beautiful garden, but it is hard to out-do nature. If you have been riding around the area in the last couple of weeks, hopefully you noticed the beautiful spots of color and even the vast field of yellow that dot the country side, beautiful. The flowering trees in the downtown area are in full bloom. Rain still seems to be in the forecast and most of us feel like we have had enough.

It’s great to welcome John and Vivian Ball back to Willsboro. I had a great visit with Bill Perkett and his wife, who are visiting his mother Marion Helms for a few days. Bill grew up here in Willsboro. Hopefully many alumni are planning to join together at the annual Alumni Banquet on Saturday, June 25 at Crickets. This event brings back several who attended school here in their growing up years. The Alumni organization is still looking for some new officers; if anyone is interested in serving, they should contact Larry Allen at 963-8912 and let him know of your interest.

It has come to my attention that, with the flooding and the economy, local businesses are struggling to stay in business. We do have a great community, but we should try hard to support the local business. They try hard to

keep their prices at a reasonable rate and still offer good service. Now, with the price of gas, do we really save when we travel out of town? Just keep this in mind if we want our community to stay in good shape and welcoming to our summer guests. I am glad that the school budget passed along with the purchase of a new school bus. We welcome the two elected members to the school board; they do a great job and dedicate many hours of service. The new restaurant is really taking shape and should be open soon. The community is still looking for volunteers to assist in the special places here in town. Two events at the Willsboro United Methodist Church coming soon, the annual Spring Tea & Pound Auction on Saturday, May 28 at 2 p.m. Just bring a gaily wrapped mystery gift that will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to mission work. Their next public supper will be on Wednesday, June 1, where they will serve roast beef. The Catholic Church is having a breakfast this weekend. So check it out.

y the time you read this, and with a bit of luck, the ferry should be operating again. Loads of gravel spread over the submerged dock will raise it above the water level and permit traffic to cross the lake once more. Ginny and I watched the crew spreading gravel, and then went over to Begg’s Park to see windwhipped waves threatening the gazebo. We were joined by a pair of friendly gawkers from Florida who were obviously chilled by what seemed to me like a pleasant zephyr.

This Saturday the film society is presenting five short films at the Whallonsburg Grange.

These are Oscar nominees and an Oscar winner from this year; the show starts at 8 p.m.

Also on Saturday, at the Essex Community Church, a three piece group will be performing as part of the Essex Community Concert series. This one starts at 7:30 and will be followed by a reception where you can meet the musicians. Refreshments will be served and the cost is $10. For more on the concert series

On Friday evening, the Adirondack Art Association opens its doors for a new season with a show of the works of the late Mary Gullo. This is a fundraiser for the association with tapas and other refreshments. It runs from 6 to 8 p.m.

This week at the car museum, we rearranged the collection to bring in some new cars and send some off for the summer. I got to drive a 1967 red Jaguar XKE convertible, which would be a great car for the July 4 parade but it’s not to be lent out. Would any of my readers have a classy convertible they’d be willing to let us use for the parade? The passenger would not be me, but a certain well-known local personality. Valley News correspondents, if they appear at all in the parade, would, of course, be on foot.

his week, the NCSPCA would like to share with you some tips on keeping your furry family members chillin' right along with you this summer, courtesy of the health experts at WebMD. Their staff recommend the following for summer comfort: Never leave your pet in a parked car—for any length of time. It gets very hot, very fast, inside a parked vehicle. That can be deadly, even after a short time.

Keep clean, cool water on hand at all times. On really hot days, your pet may even enjoy it if you put ice

cubes in their water bowl.

Shelter them from the sun.

Be sure your furry friends always have access to a shady place to get out of the sun. Keep pets inside when it's really hot. When it gets close to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, it can be hard for pets to keep cool

through panting. So on really hot days, bring cats and dogs indoors. Brush your pet—daily if possible.

Brushing your pet removes dead undercoat, helping air to circulate near the skin, keeping pets cooler.

Our featured pet this week is Blondie, a beauti-

ful, honey-colored Labrador Retriever/mix who came in with her sister Peanut. They have been together for years. We would very much like to see them be adopted together. They both have sweet dispositions and gentle personalities; they get along well with everyone and will never pull on their leash when you go for a walk. Blondie and Peanut would make for you the best company ever.

Help send World War II veterans to Washington, D.C.

or many World War II veterans, visiting the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. is high on their bucket list. And thanks to an organization called Patriot Flight, Inc. — based in New York’s capital region — some northern New York veterans have been able to cross this trip off their list.

Opening in 2004, the memorial honors the 16 million U.S. men and women who served in the military , and the roughly 400,000 Americans who died during World War II. It is located between Constitution and Independence Avenues. And that’s a gr eat tidbit to know, for those who have the time and money to travel to our nation’s capital, but many aging W orld War II vets ar e on fixed incomes and can’t af ford the

Enter Patriot Flight. This volunteer group flies World War II veterans from upstate New York to see the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. for free.

Inspired by a program in Springfield, Ohio — Honor Flight Network, Inc. — Patriot Flight began transporting vets to the nation’s capital in 2008, joining more than 100 other gro ups throughout the U.S. affiliated with the Honor Flight Network, which was founded in 2005.

In New York, ther e ar e similar gr oups in Long Island, Rochester and Buf falo.

Plus, there is another group — Leatherstocking Honor Flight — that flies out of Albany.

One local veteran — Kenneth Coonrod, of Willsboro — made the tripApril 23. Coonr od enlisted in the U.S. Navy in December 1944 and served in the Pacific Theater, in places like Guam and Okinawa, until 1946.

“It was far above what I ever expected it to be,” Coonrod said of the memo-

rial and the Patriot Flight trip.

No Patriot Flight trips ar e curr ently scheduled. As funding becomes available through donations, they schedule more tours.

When there is a trip, it only takes one day. The 15-hour tour starts at 6 a.m. in Latham. Vets fly a Southwest plane from Albany International Airport to Baltimore, where they hop on a bus and ride to W ashington, D.C. for the day .

Special needs, such as wheelchairs, can be met. About 30 percent of the veterans who have taken trips so far have required wheelchairs, and the deluxe motorcoaches ar e equipped with wheelchair lifts. World War II veterans who are terminally ill are given special priority. Those who r equire oxygen must make arrangements ahead of time, as oxygen tanks ar e not allowed on flights.

Patriot Flight is an important organization at an important time, and it is one with a limited life span, given the current mission of pr oviding “our r emaining World War II veterans the

chance to personally view the memorial that was built to recognize their sacrifice to our nation.”

We ask people to consider donating to Patriot Flight but not to wait too long. At an average age of 85, mor e than 1,200 World War II veterans are dying every day. Patriot Flight calls its mission “ur gent,” and our time to say thank-you is quickly running out.

For some veterans, the National World War II Memorial is the last thing they’d like to see befor e they die.

Is this fair or right? How do we teach those in our society to own up to their mistakes and learn from them if we allow our government agencies to run rough shot over its citizens and get away with it? Let’s face it, we paid for the government’s action thr ough our taxes. They have nothing personally to lose. away with it, why not take everything you want anytime you want? The lesson learned is simple. Keep doing it until someone puts a stop to it and ther e is a level of punishment commensurate with the act.

Government must be held to the highest standard possible given its unlimited re s o u rc e s a n d w h e n p r o v e n w r o n g , r e peatedly, should face some sort of re strictions or censorship. They have no skin in the contest, and with nothing to lose, it only serves to empower them all the

more. Gov. Andrew Cuomo says he wants to improve ethics at the state government level. This is the perfect time for the Governor to send a clear message that those of us living in the Adirondack Park have rights, too!

As citizens, we all owe a gr eat deal of gratitude to Sandy and Barbara Lewis for standing up to the APA and the State of New York. Very few among us would have or could have taken the actions they did, and that’s what’s at the root of this issue.

The APA knows they can have their way ,

interpret the r ules any way they see fit, and the average citizen has little choice but to cave in to their demands or risk losing everything.

It’s time for theAPA and the state to admit they wer e wr ong and let ef fects of their actions r emain on the r ecord for all to know that they are not invincible. They must learn to deal with the average citizen in a fair, equitable way and not as the big bully they have proven to be time and time again.

are the work of more than twenty years faithful study of the wildest and most grand and ro mantic natural scenery east of the Rocky Mountains, and wer e executed by a skillful artist, who has made a life work of painting fine landscapes, having studied the art in Germany, Italy and Paris, and in this country under Church. Each painting is a valuable work of art, and would make a fine parlor scene. The descriptive lectur e by Pr of. Keese was especially interesting and instructive to all.

Lawr ence dismissed the complaint of Mrs. May Betters of Saranac Lake against Solomon, Hyman and Anna Drutz, Saranac Lake grocers, and R. C. W illiams Company incorporated distributors and of her husband, Percy, as against the R. C. Williams.

The jury returned a no cause for action verd ict in the husband’s action against the Drutz’.

A jury Friday afternoon r eturned ver dicts totaling $12,200 in favor of Arthur Senecal and his wife Daisy, of Keene V alley, in their automobile negligence actions against Samuel Thorne and his daughter , Emeline, of New York, winter sports visitors to the Keene V alley section.Mrs. Senecal received $11,000 of the amount and her husband was awar ded the r emainder. The actions arose from an automobile accident near the Senecal home January 2.

Mr. and Mrs. Senecal were leaving the driveway of their

home when their car, driven by Mr. Senecal, figured in a collision with a car driven by Emeline Thorne and owned by her father. Mr. and Mrs. Senecal were severely injured.

Mr. and Mrs. Senecal were represented by the law firm of R. Prime and Soden of Lake Placid, while the defense testimony was pr esented by Clif ford W . McCormick of Saranac Lake.

SCHROON LAKE — A carrier pigeon, released from the tower of the Empire State Building by Mr. and Mrs. Jack Dempsey, spread its wings at 11:20 A. M. on Tuesday and arrived at 4 P. M. at Scaroon Manor, bringing the first honeymoon reservation this season to the summer er sort. The pigeon was released by the former heavy-weight champion of the world in the pr esence of a group of other celebrities and about twenty newspapermen. Joseph Frieber, genial pr oprietor of Scar oon Manor , was on hand to welcome the first honeymoon couple, Mr. and Mrs. James Patruccio of Passaic, N. J. who arrived Wednesday.

The Ticonderoga Sentinel, May 1949

TICONDEROGA — The Larrabees Point Ferry, which operates on Lake Champlain between the terminus of the Fort Ticonderoga road and the opposite Vermont shore, ran away Thursday evening with a honeymoon couple aboard.

The all-steel pontoon floated ferry snapped its cable in a powerful north wind a few minutes after leaving the V ermont landing on the last trip of the day with Mr . and Mrs. Herman of Baltimore aboard in their car. The Navy LC boat which supplies the power to drive the ferry on its cable was unable to handle the large steel barge. Driven down the lake by the wind, the ferry beached itself at a point about a halfmile south of the New York Landing.

Realizing that nothing could be done until the wind subsided the operator unhitched the LC fro m the ferry and took the Hermans back to Ticonderoga.

AVCS voters pass school budget

North Star Underground Railroad Museum officially opens its doors in Keeseville

keith@denpubs.com KEESEVILLE — A new museum of fers a look into the r ole that the North Country played in helping slaves escape to freedom.

The North Star Underground Railr oad Museum, next to Ausable Chasm, officially opened its doors to the public on May 21, with the public getting a first look at the interactive features and displays.

“This is beyond our expectations,” North Country Under ground Railr oad Historical Society Pr esident Dan Papson said.

“This i s t he b iggest, l ittle museum in New York State.”

“It is a very interactive exhibition,” Vice President Frank Kinnelly said. “Y ou can watch the movies that we h ave. And a l ot o f t he exhibits have doors that you can open to learn more.”

eral r ooms, which include a look at the women of the Underground Railr oad movement, a movie detailing the story of a slave who found fr eedom in Bloomingdale, and the r ole that churches played in the Underground Railr oad movement in the area.

The museum was funded through several grants which were gained through a collective ef fort of the historical society and the town of Chesterfield.

Papson said that they have also worked closely with Ausable Chasm to bring the museum to r eali-

ty.

“What is amazing about this is we have a government agency , a private business and a not-for profit agency working together,” he said. “None of this could have been done with out the help of each other. I think that this is a pioneering situation that other or ganizations will start to copy because this is a win-win-win situation.”

The North Star Underground Railr oad Museum is open on T uesdays through Sundays fr om 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., and will also be open on Monday holidays, including Memorial Day. The museum will be open through Columbus Day. For mor e information, call 834-5180.

Local schools take part in Operation Teddy Bear

keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — Local students throughout the r egion have been able to learn more about HIV/AIDS while helping to bring smiles to those afflicted with the disease.

Operation Teddy Bear, which has been conducted in W estport, ElizabethtownLewis, Willsboro and Cr own Point Central Schools, as well as Saranac Lake Middle School, through the Essex County Department of Public Health, helps students learn more about the disease while creating teddy bears that are sent to patients.

“This is a pr ogram that pr omotes HIV awareness and gives them a chance to make a difference,” Kathy Daggett, director of pr eventative services with the

ECDPH, said. “Students ar e taught different things about HIV and the immune system, how HIV affects the body, a nd also about Sage Allott holds the teddy bullying bear she created for Operation and the Teddy Bear. stigma that can be attached to someone living with HIV .

Daggett said that after the discussions, the students are then challenged to create a teddy bear to give to someone who is affected by the disease.

“The variety of ways that the students personalize them ar e so cute,” Daggett said. “You can tell that they put a lot of effort and thoughtfulness into their cr eations.”

“Operation Teddy Bear is a unique program that allows students the opportunity to show kindness to others while learning a great deal about HIV and other communicable diseases,” Rebecca Lewis, health teacher at ELCS, said. “This type of education will help in the pr evention of disease and will also help foster a generation that is compassionate to others r egardless of their medical status.”

Westport passes budget

keith@denpubs.com WESTPORT — The voters in the W estport Central School District voted in favor of the adopted 2011-12 spending plan May 17.

The $5,333,697 budget received 201 in favor compared to 154 against.

The resulting budget calls for an estimated tax levy of $3,159,594.

“We are really happy,” Westport superintendent Dr. John Gallagher said. “The board, staff, faculty and administration are all pleased that our spending plan has passed. It was a difficult year, and we cut some things that will be missed, but we wer e able to r e-instate some items as well.”

Also, incumbent board member Tom Kohler received 271 votes, running unopposed in the election.

WESTPORT — Memorial Day weekend is usually a perfect time for an evening out, dining at one of Westport’s lakeside restaurants.

This year , you’r e going to need a snorkel.

Congressman Bill Owens saw for himself the impact the flooding on Lake Champlain is having on local businesses when he toured the Lake Champlain shoreline in Essex County May 19, stopping at the

Westport Marina, among other places.

“It’s a disaster ,” Larry Carroll of the Westport Marina said. “The damages are looking at about $250,000 and up.”

“It’s har d to belive the power of natur e until you see things like this,” Owens said. “It looks like people built their houses and their businesses right in the middle of the lake.

Westport municipal center going back to voters keith@denpubs.com WESTPORT — Three organizations hope that better information will lead to better results when it comes to a vote on a new home.

The town of Westport, Westport V olunteer Fir e Department and W estport Central School District will again submit a pr oposal for a new municipal center to the voters on Tuesday, July 19.

“This will be decided by the voters,” town supervisor Daniel Connell said. “We went back and started out fr om page one and we are present-

ed what we feel is the most cost-effective option to the voters.”

Connell said that after the original vote in June 15, 2010, came out against a new building that would house services for all thr ee entities, the committee went back to square one to find alternatives.

“We looked at the engineering report, talked to people in Vermont about different materials for the structure, looked at building separate buildings instead of one and r eviewed the finances again,” Connell said. “We went fr om start to finish, and in the long term, the single structure is the most feasible option economically.”

Connell said that the cr eation of a new building would also be more cost effective then repairing the curr ent town hall.

“We looked at a comparison with the r enovations that ar e needed at the town offices, and it will be in the ballpark of about $200,000 cheaper to build a new structure.”

Connell said that the current town hall needs major renovations, starting with the foundation.

“The building is falling of f its foundation in the back,” he said. “The whole structure has shifted, and this would be major r ehab t o g et t he b uilding where it needs to be.”

Connell said that the building committee, which is made up of r epresentatives fr om each organization, was scheduled to meet May 19 to chart a course of action.

“We want to make sure that we get everything out there to the voters,” Connell said.

The joint municipal center which would house the Westport town of fices, W estport Department of Public Works, a maintenance and fueling facility for use by all municipalities, including W estport Central School, and the W estport Volunteer Fire Department.

Almost a year ago, a similar proposition was defeated by just seven votes.

Cancer survivor makes good on promise Gretchen Boardman creates variety of items for ECH

keith@denpubs.com ESSEX/ELIZABETHTOWN — While she was suf fering through the treatments and recovery associated with ovarian c a n c e r, G r e t c h e n B o a r d m a n made a promise to herself.

“I made a pledge in my heart that when I became well, I was going to do mor e things for other people,” Boardman said.

Since, she has spent most of her T uesday mornings traveling fr om her home in Essex to the Elizabethtown Community Hospital to donate items that she has made.

“Since the start of the year, I have br ought in 16 quilts, 1 11 pillow cases, 26 tote bags, 36 water bags and 36 tissue covers,” Boardman said. “I love to do it. It started out with the fact that I had a bunch of quilt tops that needed to be finished once I was better and that was the connection.”

Boardman said that it started with a single quilt, some pillow cases and a tote bag.

“They were able to give them right away, and it kept gro wing from there,” Boardman said. “I really feel that this is my way of giving back. If I can make some people feel good, if only for a moment, then I have helped out.”

Boardman said that she also has a plan for a futur e pr oject for the hospital.

“When I cam in for my mammogram in January, I asked the nurses how many people come in during the scr eenings for National Br east Cancer Month in October,” she said. “The told me around 100, so I am going to make 100 or so pink pillow cases to give out to each person that comes in.”

McKibben to speak at CATS event ESSEX — Acclaimed author Bill McKibben will be the featured speaker at the Celebrate Champlain Area Trails (CATS) event on Saturday, June 4 in Essex.

“Celebrate Champlain Area Trails” will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. on June 4 — which is Nationalrails T Day. WILLSBORO — A local group is trying to bring about a place where families can go to remember.

“Our hopes are that it will be a place for relatives to be able to go to and get some sort of p eace with their grief,” Lori Provost said.

Provost has dealt with that grief, as she lost a son, Andrew Jacques, when he was 7.

“That was 23 years ago, so this is something that I have been thinking about for a long time,” Provost said. “I had the idea initially as something that not only would help myself cope but also help others.”

The group has land already set aside that was donated by the Willsboro Memorial Cemetery, and will be having a dedication ceremony at the site June 18 at 2 p.m.

“The land will be blessed and we will be laying the cornerstone for the garden then,” Provost said. “We are hoping to include a labyrinth, a gazebo and the Angel of Hope statue on the site as we work at it.”

Provost said that the Angel of Hope statute was the first thing that she wanted to have for the garden.

“That was something that has always been on my mind,” she said.

Provost said that the garden and items that will be part of it would be paid for purely by fundraising.

“We are doing this project simply by donation, so as you can imagine, we will n eed a ll o f t he h elp t hat w e c an get,” Provost said.

Provost said that curr ently, the group is selling cr ocheted angels that were made by her mother and will also be selling memorial stones.

“We are going to be looking to do raffles, dinners, a walk-a-thon, anything that we can do to raise funds,” Provost said. “We are just getting started with our planning.”

WILLSBORO — Voters in the W illsboro Central School District voted almost 5-to-1 to appr ove the adopted spending plan for 2011-12.

Out of the 299 votes made for the budget, 253 votes wer e in the af firma-

tive. There were 46 votes against.

Veterans to be honored at Tribute to the Troops events in three towns Featuring Peggy Lynn concert, local veteran interviews

andy@denpubs.com BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE — M ore t han a d ozen l ocal veterans will be honor ed this Memorial Day weekend during a Tribute to the Troops multimedia event in Indian Lake, Long Lake and Tupper Lake.

The program, sponsored by the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts, will feature the scr eening of pr erecorded interviews with U.S. servicemen and women and a concert by singer songwriter Peggy L ynn, accompanied by her husband, award-winning hammer ed

dulcimer player Dan Duggan.

The Tribute to the T roops will be held thr oughout the Memorial Day weekend: 7 p.m. Saturday, May 28 at the Indian Lake Theater; 7 p.m.

Sunday, May 29 at the T upper Lake High School; and 4 p.m. Monday, May 30 at the Long Lake Town Hall.

“It’s an i mportant s alute to the troops in the area, doing it in an artistic way, having them tell their own stories,” said Erin Barton, managing director at the Arts Center.

The pr ogram is designed to pay tribute to veterans — men and women — who served in all branches of the

U.S. military . In keeping with this theme, the of ficial songs of all branches will be performed, and veterans of those branches will be asked to stand up and be r ecognized.

Video tribute Alex Roalsvig, tourism director for the T own of Long Lake Department of Parks and Recr eation, conducted all 19 of the video interviews, 18 men and one woman. She visited the homes of six veterans in Long Lake, videotaped three vets at the American Legion Parker-Benton Post 1392 in Indian Lake, and worked with Beth Johnson to speak

with 10 veterans in T upper Lake. These particular veterans served in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

For Roalsvig, this was a way to hear stories from the front lines, stories she did not hear from her late father, who served in the military during the Cold War. “I hope people will get a sense of sacrifice and commitment of our servicemen,” she said. “It’s a slice of history, particularly to the Adirondacks, of those who have seen the world and come back to settle here.”

Conducting the interviews was an “eye opener”

for Roalsvig, and she learned that serving in the military is a team effort, one you can’t understand unless you serve, fighting side-byside with others.

“It’s bigger than they are ,” she said.

Roalsvig will be cataloging more than 12 hours of video to create a DVD of segments for the T ribute to the Troops program.

by a soldier ’s wife who wanted to send a musical Father ’s Day message from her three little boys to their father serving in Iraq. Once the song was complete, they all sang the song to Dad on Father ’s Day online — using the Skype video service. The couple now has four boys and a girl.

Pete Seeger ’s “Waist Deep in the Big Muddy” will be on the playlist. This song, written in 1967, was made famous because CBS initially refused to let Seeger perform it on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour , deeming it as anti-establishment during the V ietnam War.

Keene budget passed

denpubs@denpubs.com KEENE — Taxpayers gave their stamp of approval to the Keene Central School District budget for 2011-2012 on Tuesday.

The spending plan, which totals appr oximately $5.23 million, increases the tax levy by 1.8 percent and represents a .19 percent decrease in total spending.

The budget passed 1 12 to 29.

The district’s superintendent, Cynthia For d-Johnston, says she’s pleased with the result, noting that the community values the educational programs offered at the school.

“The budget pr esented r eflects extensive planning and was as fair as possible to the taxpayer and the students,” she said.

Voters also elected T eresa Cheetham-Palen (1 12) and David Craig (124) to the board of education. For d-Johnston called them “qualified and interested.”

LPCSD voters pass budget, elect new board member

denpubs@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid Central School District’s budget passed by a comfortable mar gin on May 17, even though it included some contr oversial cuts to teaching staf f, r eductions in course offerings and a tax rate incre ase of more that 4 percent.

A total of 746 votes wer e cast with 432 voting to approve their school district’s $16.5 million budget.

There were 314 votes against the budget, which included a 3.6 percent spending

increase a nd a 4 .04 p ercent t ax l evy i ncrease. A bus contract including the lease of two new school buses was also approved.

Vo t e r s a l s o e l e c t e d t w o n e w s c h o o l board members. Herbert Stoerr was elected to the boar d with 501 votes and Camelia Sheridan was usher ed in with 480 votes.

School Boar d Pr esident Philip Baumbach was reelected with 476 votes.

Incumbent Ujju Mahatme, who trailed in the elections with 386 votes, was not reelected since the four candidates had been competing for three openings on the school board.

Saranac Lake School budget approved

denpubs@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake Central School District budget for 2011-2012 passed with ease May 17.

Voters hit the polls and passed the proposed fiscal plan by a margin of 504 to 251.

Next year ’s budget totals $27.1 million, r epresenting a .47 per cent spending incr ease over the current year. The budget incr eases the tax levy by 1.96 percent.

Additionally, it eliminates 15 positions, most-

ly through layoffs and attrition, and effectively closes the Lake Colby Elementary School. The budget also eliminates summer school for elementary and middle school students.

Meanwhile, voters appr oved two pr opositions May 17. The first, which passed 500 to 256, approves the lease of two school buses at a maximum cost of $150,000. The second provides approximately $134,000 in funding for the Saranac Lake Free Library – that passed 472 to 283.

Lisa Paschke and Terrance Tubridy, who ran unopposed, both wer e elected to the school board.

Owens also surveys flooding damage in Tupper Lake

denpubs@denpubs.com TUPPER LAKE — North Country Congressman Bill Owens and of ficials fr om the village of Tupper Lake surveyed damages to municipal infrastructure and private pr operty on May 20 in the wake of record flooding earlier this spring. “ M o t h e r N a t u r e h a s r e a re d h e r u g l y head this year ,” Owens r emarked as he traveled thr ough neighbor hoods still r ecovering after heavy snowfalls this winter gave way to record flooding in April.

Owens, the Democrat r e p re s e n t i n g New York’s 23rd Congressional District, said federal dollars are likely to pour in at some point to help repair and improve infrastructure and aid flood victims. He did not put a timetable on when those funds might become available.

But he said it was important for him to see the damage firsthand because it would help him explain to the Federal Emergency Management Agency why the North Country needs its help.

The congressman’s visit is part of a region-wide survey of flood damage fr om Lake Champlain to Tupper Lake.

lage Mayor Mickey Desmarais, Franklin County Emergency Services Director Rick Provost and village Police Chief Tom Fee, visited parts of the community that were hit the worst by flooding, including W ater Street, River Road and Raquette River Drive, where damage was done to a sewer pump station that flooded.

Lake and river levels r emain at least a foot above normal but have come down several feet since their peak levels around the end of April.

Residents have already begun recovering fr om damages but Pr ovost said there’s a lot of work to do befor e things are back to normal. The basement of one home was being excavated, firewood and other debris were strewn around people’s lawns and debris lines wer e visible several feet of f the gr ound on lawns and chain link fences.

Provost said a great deal of damage remained inside many homes and businesses as well, including mold and septic system breaches.

Owens said the cost of the flood damage far exceeded the level FEMA requires and that he was confident that assistance for r ebuilding the community’s infrastructure would be forthcoming.

Red Storm set to play for sectional title against St. Lawrence

keith@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake varsity boys lacrosse team took care of its final home game of the regular season before playing for the Section X championship against St. Lawrence May 25.

The Red Storm scor ed five straight goals in the opening quarters and four of the last five goals in beating Colton-Pierrepont, 118, May 18.

“We want to be playing our best when we take to the field against St. Lawr ence,” Head Coach Dermott Mor gan said. “W e played them to a 9-7 loss and had the lead late in both games. And we feel that we can utilize our speed on a dry, turf field in Canton.”

With six starters missing the game with varying injuries, Seth Pickerign scored four of the Red Storm’s first five goals, finishing with six goals in the game.

Josh T remblay scor ed two goals in the win, while Jef f Stevens, Peter Madden and Kevin Duguay each scored one goal.

“Peter Madden has been amazing for us,” Assistant Coach Chris Dupr ee said.

“Stevens, Duguay and Pickerign have all contributed.”

“The big thing with six starters being out has been trying to keep the wheels fr om falling off,” said Morgan. “We are still new in lacrosse, and sometimes we will give up a bunch of goals.”

Against Colton-Pierr epont, the Red Storm saw a 5-1 lead turn into a 6-5 deficit before taking an 8-6 lead on their way to the win.

Chazy earns top seed in playoffs by ousting Beagles in MVAC’s

keith@denpubs.com KEENE V ALLEY — The Chazy Eagles took advantage of the br eaks and eliminated several Westport/Keene Beagles from the basepaths as they claimed a birth in the Mountain and V alley Athletic Confer ence championship game, as well as the top seed in the Section VII/Class D playoffs.

The Eagles scored a 7-3 win over the Beagles May 23 in the MV AC Division I v . II playoff game.

“I thought that we were very good defensively,” head coach Brian Nor cross said after the game. “Nathan Reynolds (winning pitcher with 5.1 innings, two earned r uns) pitched well and when the game was tight, Ricky Osier (who earned a save with 1.1 innings and three strikeouts) came in and shut the door.”

Kyle Bissonette scor ed the first two r uns of the game for the Eagles, scoring on a wild pitch after r eaching on an err or in the first, and then scoring on a thr owing error in the third, which also scored Kaleb Snide.

The Eagles opened the game up in the sixth, when John T regan scor ed on a Kyle McCarthy squeeze bunt, Michael R yba scored on a Craig Botten single, and Botten scored on a Bissonette single.

“Craig had a big RBI hit for us in the sixth inning,” Norcross said.

Osier scored the final r un of the game on a wild pitch in the seventh.

Cuomo announces plans for session in Lake Placid Cuomo hits on

LAKE PLACID — Governor Andrew Cuomo took his “People First Campaign” to the Olympic region Wednesday, where he continued to rally support for his legislative agenda.

Before the curr ent session ends June 20, Cuomo wants to enact meaningful ethics r eform, cap property taxes, and pass marriage equality legislation.

Cuomo says he has the people on his side – and what happens in the next several weeks will r eveal what side lawmakers in Albany are on.

More than 200 people packed the brand new Conference Center at Lake Placid to hear Cuomo lay out his agenda and his goals for the current legislative session.

Before Cuomo took to the podium, Saranac Lake Mayor Clyde Rabideau told onlookers that the North Country hasn’t r eceived this much attention fr om Albany since another Cuomo was in office decades ago.

“Here in the North Country , we’re not r eally used to getting a lot of attention fro m Albany, much less than the governor himself,” he said. “Unless of course we er flect upon the first Governor [Mario] Cuomo – who visited the North Country many times and was a tremendous partner and ally in our economic development.”

North Elba Supervisor Roby Politi also heaped praise upon Cuomo, noting that he has str ong support among taxpayers, business owners, and elected officials as he looks to capitalize on the momentum he began building during the budget season.

“The politicians in Albany may not want to do it, but we know, and the governor knows, that this agenda is what this state needs to get back on the right track,” he said.

And it was that appar ent disconnect between lawmakers and the people that underscored Cuomo’s presentation. At every turn, Cuomo seemed to draw a line in the sand – with him and the people of New York on one side, the state Legislature on the other.

He did dole out some cr edit, noting that lawmakers passed an on-time budget earlier this spring – a budget that made substantive changes in Albany.

“This was a much different experience than in the past,” Cuomo said. “The budget was honest; there were no gimmicks in it; it was balanced; and it was on-time. Government actually performed.”

But that’s where the praise stopped. Turning to property taxes, Cuomo told the crowd that New York counties rank among the top tier nationwide. On average, pr operty owners in the U.S. pay about $1,900 in taxes annually.

In New York, that number nearly doubles to $3,700.

“The very simple tr uth is that New York has no economic futur e as the tax capitol of the nation,” Cuomo said. “Businesses will leave, people will leave – we know that, because we’re experiencing it.”

And his plan leaves little wiggle r oom for governments who have no other choice – for school boards, it would take a 60 percent vote to pass a budget raising taxes mor e than the governor ’s cap. For local governments, it would r equire a two-thir ds vote by lawmakers.

This proposal has been a hit with taxpayers, but not everyone is sold.

“Everybody wants a pr operty tax cap, but nobody wants the services cut that ar e pr ovided to them,” said Randy Douglas, who chairs the Essex County Boar d of Supervisors.

He says the governor needs to attach meaningful mandate relief to a cap on tax growth.

Otherwise, governments like Essex County will be forced to make significant cuts to services.

“The governor’s cut this year was $300,000 out of home health car e for Essex County ,” Douglas explained. “If a pr operty tax cap went thr ough, it’s $130,000 and every $130,000 is one percent on the tax levy. Right there, if we cut that program, there’s our two percent. Those are the issues we’re faced with in Essex County as government officials.”

Cuomo is calling for mandate r elief and Douglas says he’s confident that specific action is forthcoming.

In addition to a pr operty tax cap, Cuomo also wants lawmakers to pass real, meaningful ethics reform in this session.

That means establishing an independent ethics commission and mandatory disclosure of outside business dealings.

“My bill says, disclose to the public private clients that you r epresent befor e the state government,” Cuomo said. “And disclose how much they pay you for that service.And my point is that when you r efuse to answer that question, you just did answer that question.”

With pictures of disgraced politicians like Alan Hevesi and Joe Br uno flashing across a screen to his right, Cuomo said the notion of a self-policing legislatur e is outdated – laughable even.

“Self policing is an oxymor on,” he said.

“By definition there’s no such concept as selfpolicing. We need an independent monitor to restore faith, so people know that’s a government that works for them in Albany and you deserve that and you’re going to get it.”

This week’s event had all the flair and energy of a campaign stop – while speaking on a tax cap and ethics r eform, the entir e room burst into applause, interr upting Cuomo’s speech.

But when Cuomo spoke of marriage equality, pockets of spectators were noticeably reserved.

And this particular agenda item might prove to be the biggest challenge for a governor who, up to this point, has experienced nothing but victory . Passage of a gay marriage bill is a sur e bet in the Democrat-controlled Assembly – but the Senate’s GOP majority could r epresent a major r oadblock for Cuomo.

Cuomo says legalizing gay marriage would restore New York as a leader in pr ogressive politics.

“Five, ten years fr om now, we will look back and say , ‘We can’t believe ther e wer e states that didn’t allow gay people to marry just because they were gay,’” he said.

Cuomo is calling his agenda the “people’s agenda.” He wants all thr ee of these bills on his desk by June 20 – if that doesn’t happen, he warns that legislators shouldn’t bother going home.

For Cuomo, the coming weeks r epresent a philosophical battle for contr ol of government.

“Will the government r espond to the people of this state, the citizens of this state, or the lobbyists who r oam the hallways in Albany?” he asked. “It’s about the people versus the politicians. And who’s going to win?

Well, ar e we going to put the people first?

That depends on you. It depends on what you do.”

And what Cuomo wants is for New Yorkers to tighten the screws on lawmakers. With recent polls showing overwhelming support for his agenda, that wish just might come true.

Social issues - “We have been a leader in social progress... We will look back 5-to-10 years from now and say that we cannot believe that there were states that did not have marriage equality.”

His legislative agenda - “Tell your representative to pass these bills or do not come home... W e ar e making pr ogress that we have not made in years.”

Prison closures - “We are going thr ough the pr ocess and will be making announcements on that within the next several weeks.”

he Great North Woods continue to become a little less wild, following another announcement from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

In March 2011, the agency removed federal protection for the eastern cougar, after extensive reviews revealed no evidence of an existing breeding population in the eastern United States.

Researchers believe the Eastern cougar subspecies has been extinct since a trapper in Somerset County, Maine, killed the last confirmed eastern mountain lion in 1938.

More recently, on May 5, 2011, the Fish and Wildlife Service proposed a new rule to eliminate federal protection for wolves throughout the central and eastern U.S. According to the USFWS proposal, the special regulation for the Eastern Distinct Population Segment (DPS) was based on research indicating the gray wolf is no longer considered a native species in the northeast. The agency now recognizes the eastern wolf (Canis lycaon) as the only wolf native to the northeast, and the agency will evaluate it “for possible protection under the Act in the near future.”

The special regulation for the Eastern Distinct Population Segment (DPS) applies to wolves in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.

The persecution of wolves by human is the primary reason for the decline of wolves across North America, Humans are the largest single cause of wolf mortality and the only cause that can significantly affect wolf populations at recovery levels.

Studies indicate that wolves require remote wild areas, with a wide range of prey animals. In the northeast, whitetail deer have historically filled this role. However, in a study conducted in Minnesota, researchers determined that road density

also plays a significant role in the ability of wolves to establish a presence.

The study discovered that wolves require a road density that does not exceed .9 miles of highway per square mile of land, the current road density of the Adirondack Park. Road density is not an indicator of potential road kill, rather it is an indication of the ease at which humans can access wolf habitat to harass, trap or shoot them.

Research indicates that wolves were primarily extirpated from the northeastern United States by 1900. However, there have been a number of credible observations of wolves reported in the Northeast throughout the 20th century.

According to various reports, a single female wolf was killed in western Maine in 1993, and in 1996 a second wolf was trapped and killed in central Maine.

Another wolf-like caned was mistaken for a coyote and killed in 1997 in northern Vermont, and in 2001, a coyote hunter shot and killed a male wolf (85 lb.) in Day, NY. In early 2002, an apparent wolf (64 lb.) was killed by a trapper in southeastern Quebec, less than 20 miles from the New Hampshire border, and in October 2006, a male wolf (91lb.) was shot in southern Quebec, near a location where a wolf pack had been established.

These incidents, along with similar observations and physical evidence of large, unidentified ‘dogs’ in the northeast over recent years, has led some to believe wolves may actually be dispersing into the northeastern United States from habitat in

On May 5, 2011, the Fish and Wildlife Service proposed a new rule to eliminate federal protection for wolves throughout the central and eastern U.S. southern Canada.

Many of these unidentified ‘dogs’ have exhibited characteristics consistent with an animal that ranges in size somewhere between the eastern coyote and the gray wolf.

Although it remains uncertain at this time, increasingly the scientific evidence suggests the historic wolf of the Northeast was more closely related to the red wolf than to the gray wolf.

According to reports, a recent Geographic Information System analysis that evaluated the potential for wolf dispersal from southern Quebec and Ontario into the northeastern United States found that sufficient suitable wolf habitat is available in the Adirondack Park region of New York and in Maine and northern New Hampshire.

Although there remain a number of potential dispersal corridors connecting existing wolf populations north of border with the expansive wolf habitat in Maine, New Hampshire and New York, there are also significant physical barriers to such a dispersal, including the St. Lawrence River, several four lane highways, rail lines, and dense human developments that may prohibit the movement of a sufficient number of wolves from Canada into Maine.

A study on the feasibility of wolf reintroduction in the Adirondacks, conducted in 1999, revealed the habitat was suitable for sustaining a small population of gray wolves.

However, due to the park’s fragmented nature, and the lack of wild corridors linking occupied wolf areas to the north; it was determined that wolves would not be able to establish a viable, breeding population without periodic human intervention. The study concluded that ecological conditions dictated against the successful reintroduction of gray wolves.

Yet, stories and reports of wolves persist and continue to circulate. Despite evidence to the contrary, we want to believe them. We want to believe there are still wolves and cougars out there; we want our woods to remain dangerous and mysterious.

In some manner, this belief makes us brave, strong and daring. If there are still wild animals stalking the local woods, our forest forays are no longer just a simple walk in the park; they become an adventure. We all need the excitement.

Town of North Elba will not pursue side-by-side rail trail project

denpubs@denpubs.com NORTH ELBA — As the debate over the rail corridor in the T ri-Lakes continues, one municipality is backing off a plan to constru ct a recreational path alongside the train tracks between Lake Placid and Saranac Lake.

The town of North Elba has learned that it cannot consolidate a pair of federal grants in order to complete phase one of the pr oject, which would construct a bike path from Lake Placid to Ray Brook.

The town’s plans wer e popular among lo-

cal cyclists, but some opponents of the rail corridor wanted of ficials to wait for the future of the tracks to become clearer.

Speaking Tuesday, Tony Goodwin of Keene told of ficials fr om the town of North Elba they should delay plans to use federal funding to construct the bike path.

“Because the grant money will go a whole lot further in terms of producing a real community recreation trail once we get the rails removed,” he said. “We really believe that in this climate and with the ecent r decline of ridership here and other problems, that pressure we’re working on putting on the DOT will, at

some point in the fairly near futur e, get the decision that the rails will be removed.”

Goodwin said there’s no guarantee that the state Department of T ransportation will authorize r emoval of the rails, but he feels strongly that the economic climate in New York will eventually put an end to what he calls recreational train riding.

In making his case to the boar d, Goodwin was joined by an old foe — Lake Placid r esident Jim McCulley. The two have sparr ed in the past over things like motorized access to the Jackrabbit Trail, but this time, they wer e on the same page.

McCulley came to the meeting armed with a box of tax r eturns which he says show the Adirondack Scenic Railroad being subsidized between $300,000 and $600,000 annually.

“This stack right here, this paperwork right here, all this is bills submitted to the DOT for payment by the Adirondack Scenic Railr oad for 2009,” he said. “One year without a grant, the Adirondack Scenic Railroad is bankrupt.”

And although town of ficials welcomed comment from the two men, it turns out plans to constr uct a bike path alongside the train tracks have been put on hold indefinitely.
