WESTPORT — There are still some openings for the Essex County Youth Bureau Youth Soccer Camp Aug. 15 at the Essex County Fair Grounds in Westport.

“Spots are limited and are filling up rather quickly,” Michael Mascarenas, director of community resources, said.

The camp will be open for youth ages 6-14. Ages 610 will operate 9 a.m. until noon; ages 11-14 will run 1 until 4 p.m. The cost for the week-long camp is $120.

Former New York State Gov. David Paterson to speak at Paul Smith’s

denpubs@denpubs.com PAUL SMITHS — Paul Smith’s College of ficials announced that former Gov. David Paterson will speak to the 2011 graduating class this weekend.

Paterson became New York’s 55th governor after another controversial figure, Eliot Spitzer, was forced to r esign amid a pr ostitution scandal. He served just two years in the Executive Mansion, taking office in 2008 and finishing in 2010.

He’s overcome a lot of obstacles in his life and we think he’ll have a terrific message to shar e with our graduates this May.” For his part, Paterson said he’s honored to address this year’s graduating class.

“The Adirondacks are a special place and it is a pleasure to return,” he said in a statement provided by the college.

ongratulations to 3-year-old Emma Conley, whose 17-1/2 inch trout was the biggest fish caught in the Westport Fish & Game Club's annual fishing contest last Saturday. Emma and 37 other youngsters from 3 to 15 took part in the contest, which luckily fell on the first really nice day we've had recently. The Fish & Game Club sponsors this event each year, and this year it was supported by donations from Ernie's Market, Everybody's Market, the Chazy & Westport Telephone Company, and Norm's Bait and Tackle.

"Everyone had a terrific time," Sheila Borden informed me. "Anyone who caught a fish received a trophy or a prize and all other fisher people also left with a bag of fishing goodies." As for the fish themselves, 300 of them were laboriously trucked up to the pond in three trips by John Tefoe, George Tefoe, and Irwin Borden. Nice job, everyone.

The Westport Heritage House Visitor Center, which will be open this year from June 23 through Columbus Day, is seeking volunteer Ambassadors to greet visitors

and have resources available to answer frequently asked questions about Westport, Wadhams and the surrounding region. Two brief training sessions are scheduled for Thursday, May 19 from 7 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, May 21 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Ambassadors are asked to attend one of them.

If you were an Ambassador last year the center welcomes you back. If you’d like to volunteer this summer, please call Debbie Frisbie at 962-4802 or Meredith Johnston at 962-4590 and let them know what training session you'll be attending. If these times don't work for you, they can arrange an alternative.

The Strawberry Festival is coming up in Wadhams on Sunday, June 19 at the Wadhams UCC Church. The Wadhams Free Library will sell books there again, and there's also a new event: the "First Annual Boquet River Duck Derby," a free-for-all race that pits yellow duckies against each other in the raging Boquet. Five ducks, er, bucks to enter, to benefit the Wadhams Volunteer Fire Company community fund.

Don't forget the school budget vote on May 17, from noon to 9 p.m. at the school.

We are so thankful for the foot print that Leanna DeNeal has provided for us with the plantings all along their property in Route 22, and along the stone wall at the Drug Store.

A favorite place to take moms for their Mother ’s Day treat seemed to be the Harmony Restaurant. That is where my family, along with the Gload family, enjoyed a great meal and saw many of our friends there. It was a very busy place. Another delightful event this past weekend was the Mother ’s Day Breakfast at the Reber Church this past Saturday. The French family organized and put it on, using their season’s Maple syrup for the pancakes, with the proceeds going to the church fuel fund.

The vast amounts of water have sure made the grass grow. I heard a couple of lawn mowers out this past week. A few more people have returned from their winter quarters. So welcome home to Bobbie & Brad Paye, Lucille & Harry Little. Sadly many of us bade our last goodbye to my former partner at the Paine Library, as

Town Clerk Audrey Hoskins is not going to seek re-election this fall. She and her now retired husband plan to escape from the concerns of the workaday world, and are planning trips to Las Vegas, Branson, and the Maine coast. Audrey is a connoisseur of high tea, and will now be able to indulge freely in this genteel pastime.

The Saturday night movie, sponsored by the Champlain Valley Film Society, is “Restrepo,” about a military unit in current day Afghanistan. It’s showing at 8 p.m. at the Whallonsburg Grange.

The following Saturday, May 21, there’s going to be a vaudeville-style fundraiser at the Grange to benefit the Literacy Volunteers. It will feature all sorts of local talent, including crooners, comics, song birds, swordsmen and a Ru Paul impersonator.

Ru Paul is not related to the politician Ron Paul, but is a famous drag queen, and the impersonator, a Reber resident (but not me!), will no doubt bring a new level of flamboyancy to this demanding role.

hose who have been reading my column know that I have a seriously large pair of rose-colored glasses that I constantly wear. We are bombarded with bad news and strife in the world all the time which is a tremendous shame as I truly believe there is far more good than bad. With this philosophy firmly in place I am very happy to report that the village of Keeseville has many plans to step up to the plate and improve our community. This is the kind of news that I love to write.

Many great volunteers, tenants and even inmates from Moira came forward and worked around the clock to protect our village from the flooding doing a great job.

Mayor Rock was very happy to report that there are no road issues in Keeseville.

I also have new information about the paving stone contest and that there will not be a flower contest. Everyone is encouraged to make paving stones by pouring cement into a wooden frame and before it sets to add whatever elements are desired to create an artistic masterpiece. Maybe marbles or hand-

Anybody can enter but only residents of Keeseville can win. The stones will be put permanently on display on the walkway by the office and there is a lot of room for many stones.

This Friday is the last day of the Scholastic Bookfair at the Keeseville Elementary School to benefit the Keeseville Free Library. Make sure to stop by. Later this summer will be the great booksale at the library itself which is always a lot of fun.

Finally, Mayor Rock had a lot of information about the plans to work on and improve J.C. Park. A village meeting occurred this past Monday and next week I will find out more about the excited goings-on to revitalize this park.

ake Champlain is still at record high levels, with the ferry slip, marinas and Dock House all flooded. Lots of debris, mostly driftwood, is floating in and piling up on shoreline lawns and roadways. One positive aspect is there is very little plastic or other obviously human-generated junk in the wrack.

The Boquet River has dropped to normal levels, although the heavy rains have slowed planting on local farms, and certainly in my own garden. I have seed potatoes sprouting and lettuce to transplant, but gumbo for soil.

It was noted by a close reader that this column has had no news of the sewer project of late. As a responsive writer, I took a trip into town with Ginny to inspect progress on the construction. Across the road from the fire station, the control and treatment buildings are roofed and look very good. Near the library, a smaller building for the pumps is getting siding put on and a crew with an excavator, loader and dump truck was at work in the ECHO parking lot. Ginny is not happy

Janet was a great partner and we enjoyed our many years together. Many of our summer families will soon be returning to open their camps; I am sure some will be surprised at the high water levels they will find.

A reminder to come out to vote on the school budget and the election of two members for the board. A way that we can show our appreciation for the great job the present board and Supt. did to keep the budget low, is for many to come out and cast you vote. The vote takes place on Tuesday, May 17 in the school gym from noon to 8 p.m. The next movie for the Champlain Valley Film Society will be on Saturday, May 14, at the Whallonsburg Grange starting at 8 p.m. We are very fortunate that they show top notch movies at a very reasonable price.

Politicians showing leadership skills in flood A

ll over the North Country, we’ve seen more water than we can handle. The constant rain helped flood aptly named byways like the River Road, Old River Road and Water Street; shoreline homes; parks; ferry stations; boat launches; and more … much more.

We’ve seen people boating where they normally would be walking, bicycling or driving. We’ve seen bridges collapse, roads washed out, cars submerged, businesses close and ferries discontinue service. We’ve seen people hurt and almost die. And we’ve seen strangers care for one another like family members.

On the whole, we’re pleased with the response from our local and state governments.

a photo opportunity on April 29, visiting the collapsed Broad Street Bridge in the Essex County town of Moriah, where resident Anna Mayhood jumped from her SUV to save her own life two days before.

We asked Cuomo if he had made plans to meet “the woman who almost died here the other day” — Ms. Mayhood — and he said no. Asked what he would say to her to ensure her that New York state’s roads are safe, he quipped, “You are lucky; light a candle.”

Like a true politician, he didn’t answer the entire question. In fact, we’re disappointed he made a joke out of a question that included the words, “the woman who almost died here.” He was trying to be funny in front of his friends and the TV cameras, but his brief lapse of judgement showed a lack of respect and compassion with regard to a lifethreatening situation.

Moreover, the governor blamed Mother Nature, not a lack of road and bridge inspections, for what happened at that historic bridge, which was said to have been built more than 100 years ago to cross over the Lake Champlain and Moriah Railroad tracks.

But give him credit; Cuomo did visit.

He came north to inspect the flood damage and declare a state of emergency for Essex County when he could have easily stayed in Albany to issue the order.

As he stood on the brink of the collapsed Broad Street Bridge — staring into the wreckage of asphalt, stone, timber and iron — we heard him utter these words under his breath: “Man, that’s a frightening drop.”

The flooding situation was just as frightening for local politicians, such as Moriah Town Supervisor Tom Scozzafava, who praised Cuomo for his support.

The supervisor pointed to the DOT employees working side-by-side with town highway crews. They were fixing the erosion — 4 feet of topsoil — that exposed a sewer main during the April 27 flash flood. He said this kind of statelocal cooperation wouldn’t have happened a year ago under Gov. David Paterson. And he’s right. Gov. Cuomo is showing leadership skills not seen in Albany since George Pataki left office more than four years ago.

Locally, the response from town and village officials during the flooding crisis has been tremendous. We’re proud to

have leaders like Keene Supervisor Bill Ferebee, who risked his Jeep in rising water to help transport neighbors to safe ground. Let’s not forget the firefighters, emergency technicians, highway crews, and the countless volunteers who filled sandbags and manned Red Cross shelters.

Times like these, we’re proud to say we live in a small town, where neighbors look out for one another. It’s good to see our elected officials are doing the same.

Yet the flooding is still not over, and there’s plenty more work to be done.

The rebuilding will take many months and millions of dollars. Let’s just hope the political leadership skills exhibited these past two weeks are practiced consistently and are not simply flashes of brilliance.

You still need to have insurance to cover the loss caused by a fire but at least you can be confident that the fire department will at least try to put it out even if you don’t have coverage. Support for rec path To the Valley News: I strongly support the creation of a recreational trail on the Lake Placid to T upper Lake railroad line. We already have tourist trains from Lake Placid to Saranac Lake and Old Forge to Utica. The new trail would be world class thr ough some of the most pristine and beautiful landscape in the country.

Let's not let this die in endless committee meetings and studies. A study has alr eady been done and found the r ecreational trail the most economical and beneficial alternative, at no additional cost to the taxpayer!

Bully’s don’t take the summer off Though the rains and cool weather stubbornly refuse to loosen their inhospitable grip on the North Country, in the end they will acquiesce to the warm, still days of a welcoming summer , the summer of 2011.

As summer arrives, the school year will come to an end and students will bust out the school doors to that sublime feeling of no school tomorrow.

As the school year ended when I was a kid, my friends and I could scar cely contain ourselves, our teachers r eigned us in on occasion and reminded us that school was still in session, sunshine or no sunshine.

For some, summer would mean r ushing out the door early in the morning to mount a bike, wet with night’s dew, and a quick ride to meet up with friends. For others, it was of f to the beach at the lake or to a secr et swimming or fishing hole along the river . For some, summer would spell the beginning of work, a job mowing or raking lawns or on an ar ea farm in the hayfield. Now those days s eem so rich with freedom and self determination when compared to the experience of today's youth.

One thing that has not changed since then is the existence of bullies and bullying. Unlike years ago, today bullying can be accomplished from behind the cowardly protection of a computer keyboard or a cell phone.Years ago, if you talked badly enough about enough people for long enough, you would experience a day of reckoning at some point. The profile of the bully h as a lso c hanged, m any b ullies t oday a re popular, intelligent and have social currency to spend in the community and at school.

By contrast, the bully of yesterday was much easier to manage. Bullies were often pushed to the mar gins of school and eventually in the community. The victims of bullying are largely unchanged, somehow they ar e just a little different, too thin, too fat, too smart, not smart enough and so on.

As an adult, each of us has the opportunity to set an example. There are many outstanding examples of how adult behavior changed our culture in monumental and substantive ways. In

the 1960s, when doctors wer e still endorsing smoking, the majority of the adult population were smokers.

Public s ervice c ampaigns a gainst s moking and education programs certainly helped turn the tide against smoking, still, adults may have had the str ongest impact in the behavior that was modeled for youth. Adults can help reduce bullying by not being a bully themselves.

Adults that r efrain from bullying their children or the children of others will set a powerful example for youth to consider . Adults that choose not to bully other adults will also send a strong message to the youth around them.

This summer, the victims of bullying will vacate the school building, right along with their tormentors. The bully and victim r elationship won't change just because school is out. The victims will still be vulnerable and bullies will still be pressing their advantage.

As an adult, we all have a chance to set a good example and each of us have the chance to stop bullying when we see it. If one instance of bullying can be stopped, the lives of the victim and the bully may be changed forever.

Some will say that everyone has been picked on at some point and that it is just part of gr owing up. Bullying is not a normal part of gr owing up and everyone needs to take this very serious pr oblem seriously. We will always need champions to lead popular movements and their importance can not be overstated.

However, in the end, if all of us or most of us don't decide that bullying is as intolerable as the prevalence of cigar ette smoking, r educing the instances of bullying will move slowly . Sadly, the many victims of bullying must continue to carry that heavy weight, and, in some instances, they may break under its weight.

Remember, all kids count.

To the Valley News: I would like to voice my opinion on bridge closure and rock cut flooding.

I have to commute over four hours a day to Vermont, as do most people from the Moriah area. Why we have to go to another state to work, I don’t understand. I’m guessing because of the waste of money in New York when the bridge first closed.

While waiting in line at the Essex ferry everyday, I watched as four or five state DOT workers stood by waiting to dir ect people onto the ferry . I’m sur e after waiting in line every morning we were well aware of where the ferry was and how to drive onto it.

Now that Route 9 south of Port Henry has flooded again after how many years, we have the blockades manned 24/7. Why? Could there not be sand piles placed there? No, instead we have to pay for state tr ucks to sit there running all night at $4 a gallon to keep

That’s right, several mornings this week I have pulled alongside tr ucks and sat ther e several minutes, then blowing the horn to wake the men on guard. I have to commute to another state to work. However , come tax time, N ew York h as t here h and ou t fo r m y money to pay for these peoples salaries. Not to mention I have re tirement, but I have to pay for theirs.

If the workers ar e needed ther e 24/7, maybe they could work on the r oads to keep them f rom f alling a sleep. M aybe t he r oads and bridges would be maintained and not have to be closed for the r eal working folks that need them to get to another state to work.

Flooding woes start to come under control in Saranac Lake

denpubs@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — A local official says the village is finally able to contr ol water levels above and below the Lake Flower Dam. During the May 9 r egular meeting of the Saranac Lake Village Board of Trustees, Village Manager John Sweeney said cr ews are able to manage the flow of water upstream.

“For the first time in quite a while we’re seeing reductions in downstream movements and hopefully r elieving some of the pr essure on people downstream for us,” he said.

Sweeney said the village should beable to re-

duce water levels above the dam by one inch per day.

In terms of damage, Sweeney says ther e are two tr unk lines that he has serious concerns about — one on Dorsey Str eet, another on Woodruff Street.

On Pelkey Lane, part of a retaining wall has been lost. Ther e’s also uncalculated shor eline repairs that must be undertaken.

Sweeney said the hydropoint below the dam has experienced significant scouring damage and many r etaining walls downstr eam will need work, as will the foundations of some buildings.

The River Walk corridor also needs major re-

pairs.

Officials from the Federal Emer gency Management Agency have visited the village. But Sweeney said they came too early.

“Their comment to me was, ‘Usually , the event is over with,’” he said. “W e still had flood stages when they wer e her e. So they will be back.”

According to Sweeney, the village is putting together a scope of services report for three areas for engineering work.

“For buildings and foundations, it’s civil being the River W alk and any scour issues, and sewer including Pelkey and the final clarifiers including two trunks lines — we’ll be bringing

that to the board at the next meeting for discussion,” he said. “That’s in r eference to whether or not we want to do the work under one engineer and deal with FEMA under one, or do we want to have multiple contracts.”

Sweeney said that if the village gets money for repairing publicly owned infrastructure, 75 percent will be funded by the federal government, while the r emaining 25 per cent will be split evenly by state and local governments.

Community Development Dir ector Jer emy Evans said filings for individual assistance need to be turned in as soon as possible so he can turn those documents over to Essex County.

Owens visits region to view damage from flooding

denpubs@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — Congressman Bill Owens was in the North Country on May 9 to get a firsthand look at the damage caused by r ecent flooding across the region.

The Democrat, who r epresents New York’s 23r d Congressional District, says the process for getting federal flood relief assistance is moving along.

Numerous villages, towns, and counties acr oss northern New York were still under declared states of emergency late last week. Flood waters in some communities, like Saranac Lake and T upper Lake, have slowly begun to recede.

Elsewhere, flooding continues to ravage communities, especially along the shor es of Lake Champlain. Some of ficials say it could take weeks for the lake to r eturn to normal levels.

“And that’s r eally what we are working on,” he said. “We recognize that people wer e working very hard during the disaster — police, fir emen, other volunteers. W e want to go to the next step and get people prepared in terms of what you need to do in terms of documentation in or der to be eligible for FEMA and then pushing that along.”

According to Owens, a state needs to have incurred at least $24.7 million in damage in order to receive flood assistance from the Federal Emergency

Management Agency.

“We’re very sur e that floor has been r eached,” he said.

“Then it goes to the governor, and the governor then makes a declaration that one or mor e counties are a disaster area.

And then that goes to the president for a final declaration, and if the president declares it a disaster area, then FEMA relief kicks in.”

Owens said damage to public property will be expensive, but it’s homeowners and businesses that will suffer the most financially.

“The goal her e is to get

FEMA kicked in,” he said. “Because I think what we’re going to find is that we’r e going to have lots of washed out r oads and bridges. But I think individuals and businesses, with their septic systems and their water supplies, may be suffering significant damage. So we really need to be on top of this and focused on it.”

Damage in the counties of Essex and Franklin alone will most likely br eak the $25 million mark. Significant damage has also occurr ed in Clinton and St. Lawrence counties.

The Hudson, Saranac, and Raquette Rivers — as well as Lake Champlain — all reached historic highs because of flooding caused by rainfall and snowmelt.

Common Ground Garden set for cleanup days to start season

keith@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — As the snow (hopefully) gives way, local gar deners are getting their tools ready for another season.

In Saranac Lake, it will be the third season of the Common Gr ound Gar den, a pr oject of Adirondack Sustainable Communities, Inc. The garden is made up of two spaces located on Old Lake Colby Road and at Goose Hill of f of McKenzie Pond Road, offering gardening enthusiasts and newcomers alike a space to grown vegetables and flowers.

“There is surprisingly not that much garden-

ing space in the community,” Ellen Beberman of Common Ground Garden said. “This is a space for people who want to garden more or those who want to learn how to gar den to come and meet their neighbors and get tips from each other.”

To help pr epare for the season, Common Ground Gar den will be holding a community cleanup day on Saturday, May 21, beginning at 9 a.m.

“We have one plot that needs to have the deer fence re-built,” Beberman said. “We will be rototilling, cleaning up the ar ea and adding soil amendments.”

Beberman also said that the group will be finishing the plant sale that they held over the win-

ter in conjunction with Campbell’s Greenhouse.

“That will be the day that we will have the plants to distribute for people who pur chased them during our fundraisier over the winter ,” Beberman said.”

Also included in the cleanup day will be a community potluck lunch at the Old Lake Colby Road site at noon.

Overall, Beberman said that interest has continued to grow along with the garden.

“Groups being involved with the garden is a big thing now,” she said. “The local Presbyterian Church had a couple of plots last year and used volunteers fr om the chur ch to help plant

and raise the vegetables that wer e then donated to the food pantry . That is a er al model of how a group can get involved in gar dening both to learn more and help their community.”

Stories like this make Beberman believe that the group can expand more into the community in future seasons.

Plots are available for a fee of $25 plus a r efundable $15 cleanup deposit. Each plot covers approximately 15 feet by 20 feet inside a deer fenced perimeter, and water is provided at both locations.

News of the Week Councilors vote for hold on LED signs PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh councilors voted unanimously in favor of a six month moratorium on light-emitting diode (LED) signs, which have begun to appear in the city, primarily in the Cornelia Str eet business district. The moratorium was at the request of the Zoning Board of Appeals, who seek to update the city’s or dinances on digital signs, and whose chairman addressed the issue at a public hearing April 26. There was concern the signs made the ar ea look a bit too much like Las Vegas.

Peru officials finalize historical signs PERU — With the public comment and viewing period over May 6, officials will start to settle on the final versions of eight historical signs which document Heyworth/Mason Park’s past. The signs primarily focus on Native Americans; mills, as well as other early industries; A. Mason and Sons Lumber Mill; Heyworth V illage in modern times, and the 1998 flood. The signs are the work of Adel Douglas, Peru’s grant coor dinator, Car ol and Ron Allen, town historians, Maja Smith, of the Lake Chaplain Basin Pr ogram, in addition to a number of volunteers.

Home invader denied appeal PERU — Jennifer Macduf f, now 20, who or chestrated a robbery in July 2009, was denied appeal of her six year jail sentence. Macduff had argued that because her counsel was inef fective, her plea was involuntary . In denying their appeal, court justices noted she had never sought to withdraw her plea and that her sentence was a good deal shorter than the maximum allowable.

Councilors apply for fountain grant PLATTSBURGH — City councilors voted unanimously to apply for a grant, thr ough the state’s Main Street Program, which would provide roughly $38,000 to build a fountain in Trinity Park. The structure would be r oughly eight feet high and eight feet in diameter .

Petty Ride for Charity sent off in Lake Placid

keith@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — With the roar of the engines, the Kyle Petty Ride for Charity Motor cycle ride left the High Peaks Resort in Lake Placid, heading first for Corning and eventually to Florida.

The night before, Petty received a check for $6,500 through the Resort’s fundraising event, held in the Dancing Bears Lounge.

“I had a number in mind of what this night would raise, and this number is definitely bigger ,” Lori Fitzgerald of High Peaks Resort said.

Petty was pleased with the donation, and with the week that he and his team had spent in Lake Placid.

“We have had a good week that was topped of f with this donation,” Petty said. “About a thir d of the gr oup came in on W ednesday, and I was able to get here on Thursday. It has been a gre at time, and everyone has enjoyed it.”

Petty said that he hoped to r eturn to the area for either another ride or to participate in the Geoff Bodine bobsledding event, which organizers hope will be back on the Mount Van Hoevenberg track in 2012.

“Now that I know about this place and what is going on, I’ll have to come back,” Petty said. “I asked Geoff if I would be able to bring my bike for the bobsledding, but he said it’s probably not a good time for that in late January and February.”

Council voting change defeated PLATTSBURGH — A proposed change to the manner in which the City of Plattsburg h Common Council casts it votes, that would rotate the voting order, was defeated May 5. The Council vote ended in a tie, which was broken by Mayor Donald Kasprzak with a no vote.

Kasprzak said he thought the change might allow for agenda manipulation of certain votes.

WILLSBORO — The experience was, “Almost undescribable.”

That is how Kenneth Coonrod of W illsboro described his trip to the World War II Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., last month.

“It was far above what I ever expected it to be,” Coonrod, who served in the Navy fr om 1944 until 1946, said. “They tr eated us well the whole time and ther e were a lot of vets who took the trip.”

The trip to the memorial was made possible thr ough Patriot Flight, a volunteer organization af filiated with the National Honor Flight Network, which gives veterans a chance to fly for fre e to visit the memorial in W ashington, D.C. “They called me to get the application pr ocess going,” Coonrod said. “Later , they called me back and said that they had a spot on the plane for me if I was interested.”

The veterans that wer e part of the flight r elieved welcoming receptions at the Albany International Airport, wher e they departed,

“It was overwhelming from start to end the way they treated us and the way people showed up to see us,” Coonrod said.

Coonrod enlisted in the Navy i n D ecember o f 19 44, at the height of World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater, and was involved in the island conflicts on Guam and Okinawa.

be part of the initial waves of the invasion of the Japanese mainland when the atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki led to a surr ender by Japanese forces in 1945.

keith@denpubs.com LEWIS — A barn fir e on Pulsifer Road in Lewis led to the loss of livestock and the barn itself late in the evening May 5.

Andrew Denton, who was using his parents’ b arn t o h ouse l ivestock, s aid t hat h e lost 11 piglets and one calf in the fire.

“I got a call on my cell phone saying that the barn was on fire,” Denton said. “We lost all of our baby pigs, a calf and some hay.”

Denton’s wife, Andrea, was tr eated for minor injuries on the scene.

“She was trying to see if we could get to any of the animals and got hurt,” Andrew said.

Denton said that the family had six other cows that were not in the barn at the time of

CATS developing outdoor education plan WESTPORT — Champlain Area Trails (CA TS) is developing a plan to increase outdoor education for all ages in the central Champlain Valley.

With funding from the J.C. Kellogg Foundation, CA TS is hosting a series of meetings for educators, naturalists, camp-dir ectors, family advocates, and others to create th e O utdoor E ducation Action Plan.

“This plan will promote a coordinated appr oach to outdoor education and focus on teaching about our local envir onment,” Chris Maron, executive director of CATS, said. “The central Champlain Valley is biologically rich with a tr emendous variety of plants, animals, and natural communities. Learning more about it will add to local pride, strengthen our communities, and pr ovide fun,

healthy activities for everyone.”

CATS is working with community planning advisor Ann Ruzow Holland to develop the plan. She is leading participants through a pr ocess which lists existing outdoor educators and pr ograms, identifies barriers limiting and opportunities to expand outdoor education, and develops strategies to engage people of all ages in learning more about the local environment. The meetings take place at the Whallonsbur g Grange.

“We decided to focus first on youth because they are in schools, so we are doing that this spring. In the fall, we will develop the plan for adults and families and then combine the two plans into a single document,” Holland said.

“An ar ea-wide action plan will help me talk with funders about which strategies would make the most difference to the local families and visitors I work with all

year.”

The tar get ar ea for the plan is the towns of W illsboro, Essex, W estport, Lewis, and Elizabethtown because they ar e separated from surr ounding ar eas by mountains, shar e the same natural envir onments and are served by only thr ee schools. The plan will encourage others to use and adjust its strategies to increase outdoor education in their own communities.

This year's event was hailed as a success by both athletes and organizers.

It cost about $100,000 to host the games, according to ROOST Pr esident and CEO Jim McKenna. That money was raised by both private and public entities.

Lake Placid Village Mayor Craig Randall says the state also prepaid for medals and uniforms. That won't be the case next year, he says.

"This year we ar e planning a bigger event for the athletes, and we'r e starting

from scratch and will incur larger costs, so we ar e launching a pr oactive fundraising effort now to secure sponsors," Randall said.

SPARKS, Nev. — Donald Warren DeFay, Lt. Commander, USN (ret.), was born Feb. 5, 1916 to Richard E. DeFay and Nettie M. Pier ce DeFay, in Elizabethtown. He passed away April 17 in Sparks, Nev. Leaving his small home town in the Adirondacks in his teens, Donald entered the New York State Merchant Marine Academy in Brooklyn, and was in its graduating class of 1936. He was a Merchant Marine deck officer for Grace Lines, and sailed many times Donald Warren DeFay between New York and South America aboard MS Santa Maria and Santa Barbara. The latter vessel conveyed senior U.S. diplomats fr om the Pan American Conference of 1939 just after the outbreak of World War II. In 1941, before U.S. entry into the war, he was commissioned as an of ficer in the U.S. Navy. He served on convoy duty during the height of the Battle of the North Atlantic in 1941-42, aboard the USS Pegasus, making a number of perilous passages to Iceland. Although the Pegasus itself escaped German U-boats, it witnessed several merchant vessels sunk. In the latter years of the war (1944-45), he piloted Navy Lighter than Air (LTA) craft, escorting many ships and patr olling the waters from the Carolinas to the Bahamas while searc hing for German subs.

At the end of the war (1945) LCDR DeFay was commander of a blimp squadr on at Glynco Naval Air Station, Geor gia. He was then assigned to take command at Richmond Naval Air Base, outside Miami, but the blimps and their hangars wer e destroyed in the great hurricane of September 1945, effectively putting an end to that chapter of Don's naval car eer. Following sea duty in the Mediterranean and elsewhere, he attended U.S. Navy Postgraduate School, where he studied Applied Aerology.

In August 1950, Don married Ruth Harriet V essey.

They lived in Don's home town of Elizabethtown for several years, moving to San Diego in 1954.

A trained meteorologist, Don contributed to the San Diego Union for almost 20 years. Using weather instr uments at Lindber gh Field, he constr ucted r egional weather maps seven days a week. Don also sold life insurance while raising a large family in Coronado.

He served on the city's civil service commission and strongly supported Cor onado High School and Swim Club athletics and other youth activities. In 1974 the DeFays sold their First Str eet, Cor onado home and r elocated to a small ranch outside Grass Valley, Calif. They resided briefly in Prescott, Ariz., in the 1980s before returning to Northern California in 1989. In 1993 they moved to Reno, Nev . Don served as Pr esident of the Nevada Retir ed Officers Association for several years in the 1990s.

Don and Ruth wer e blessed with a 60 year marriage and lived a full life together , never apart. They shared many passions, among them a lifelong love of golf, fly fishing, traveling the Southwest, and camping in their beloved Sierra Nevada mountains.

Don was an astr onomer, loved poetry, reading and daily long walks. He will be remembered fondly for his gentle soul, calmness and courage in the face of adversity, and his easy-going sense of humor. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ruth, and childr en Donald P. DeFay, of Alaska, Jeff DeFay of Davis, and Carolyn DeFay of San Anselmo, the childr en of his first marriage to Elisabeth Koeniger DeFay , who died in 1948 (Paul, his eldest son, passed away in 1992); and his seven children with Ruth Vessey DeFay: Sydney (Feeney) of Pasadena, Charles DeFay of Point Arena; Susan (Schlosser) of Vienna, VA; Kimberley DeFay of Benicia; Hillary DeFay , of Santa Barbara; Stephanie, of South Lake T ahoe; and Sabrina (Allen) of Sparks, NV; as well as 16 grandchildren.

CANAAN, Conn. — Anne Elizabeth (Leonar d) Goedewaagen, 86, died on Tuesday April 26, 2011 at her home in Canaan, Conn. She was the wife of Jan Goedewaagen.

Anne was born on Mar ch 12, 1925 and attended schools in Bronxville. As a young woman Anne was a pioneer in the development of food preparation for television advertising. She was one of the original TV chefs!

Later in life, Anne moved to W illsboro, on Lake Champlain, with her husband Arnold Den Houd.

Anne welcomed many friends and family members who came from Holland to the USAto start a new life.

She was a most gracious hostess and loved for her great sense of humor, as well as her great cooking.

Anne spent many happy years in Willsboro, cooking, gardening, painting, puzzling and always pampering a special pet.

Anne was an enthusiastic traveler and loved to spend winters in St. Maarten. She traveled extensively in Europe with her second husband, Jan. Even during the long period of her illness she never complained and continued to put others first.

Anne's strong and optimistic spirit is an inspiration to all who knew her She is survived by her husband Jan and her thr ee stepchildren: John of Windsor, Vt. Lise and her "keeper" Brian of Gaylordsville, Conn. and Dana of Stockbridge, Mass. She leaves four grandchildr en, Gregory and Mark of Vermont and Jake and Melissa of Connecticut. She also leaves many nieces and nephews and a special great niece Christine Vrihoff of Arizona.

Edith Helen Yokell 1922- 2011 BOULDER, Colo. — Edith Helen Yokell, of Boulder, Colo., died on May 3, 2011 at age 89.

She is survived by her loving husband, Stanley, of 67 years.

She was born in Brooklyn and was raised in Elizabethtown, New York, a small village high in the Adirondacks by her par ents Alexander and Manya Gersen, a country doctor and dentist respectively.

She graduated as valedictorian of her high school at the age of fifteen, going on to r eceive a degr ee in psychology from Smith College and a Masters fr om the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Social Work (1944).

After moving to Boulder fr om North Caldwell, New Jersey, where she worked as a social worker at several Jewish family service or ganizations helping with the elderly. She relocated to Boulder where she was a 30 year resident.

In Boulder she worked at the Youth Employment Service of the YMCA arranging jobs for local high school students. She enjoyed staying active, playing tennis, swimming, bicycling, hiking, and traveled extensively with her husband.

She was a member of the Gar den Club in North Caldwell and was active in the Gar den Club and Happy Hazels in Boulder. She will be remembered for her ever-present support, keen intellect, and as a loving wife and mother.

She is survived by her son Michael and daughterin-law Debra Rahm of Boulder, daughter June of San Rafael, California, son Larry of Louisville, Colorado, brother Daniel Gerson of New York City and sister in-law Adeline, grandchildr en Benjamin of Denver , Colorado, Abraham of San Francisco, California, Lauren Scotten of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Katherine and Stephanie of Boulder.

It is hoped that the schooner “Lois McClure” will be available for tours.

Also on tap are bicycle tours of nearby historic sites and are as surrounding the bridge, a 5K footrace, a Satur day night street dance and concert, and an ecumenical service on the bridge at dawn on Sunday. Also on Sunday there are plans for a farmers’ market and a car show featuring vintage vehicles.

The LCBC is inviting performers (many of them locally-based)—musical, dance, speakers, and re -enactors— to entertain thr oughout the weekend, and there will also be opportunities for local food and craft vendors to participate. To close the weekend celebration, the LCBC is planning a spectacular fireworks display over the lake.

National EMS Week - May 15 through May 21, 2011 Emergency Service volunteers serve their community, seek others

t can happen at any time of the day, there is a person that needs medical help.

Some cases may be lifethreatening, others less severe. When it happens, local members of the volunteer emergency services ar e on hand to help.

In W estport, Emer gency Squad Captain Ben Sudduth said that the crew has already received 62 calls for the year.

“We deal with fire and EMS calls r egularly,” Sudduth said. “We have been able to do a good job maintaining the stuff that we have while adding a couple of new EMTs.” Sudduth said that Colin Wells was added as a certified EMT, while Har old Napper was re-certified as one along with himself and those currently certified.

Sudduth a dded t hat t here is always room for more volunteers on local squads.

“I would love to have the problem of having too many paramedics and EMT s,” he said.

Along with keeping those involved trained and certified, there is a lot of work that also goes into keeping emergency squads funded, as well.

According to the United States Department of Labor , 38 per cent of emer gency squads ar e the type that ar e run through fire departments with members who ar e crossed trained as emergency personnel. Four per cent of departments have separate emergency squads, while a combination of 62 per cent of ambulances ar e staf fed in some way by a volunteer.

have been busy with situations both locally and regionally, as during the December snowstorm, in New York City known as the “Christmas Blizzard,” Essex County emergency squads r esponded and made the trip to lend a hand.

The state Department of Health Bureau of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) contacted Essex County EMS coordinator Patty Bashaw , r equesting that ambulances and personnel be sent to New York City. Minerva EMS was among the many upstate New York to take on the r equest.

Cameron Dubay and Mike Corey, of Minerva traveled in ambulances fr om the towns of Willsboro and Essex to the Bronx, one of the har dest hit outer bor oughs, to work 12hour shifts.

“The snowstorm crippled emergency medi cal services there and resulted in roughly 1,300 backed up 91 1 calls,” Corey said.

Local emer gency service personnel have also received high praise. Recently , Bob Elling was named as the New York State Advocate of the Year Elling, who is a Clinical Instructor at Albany Medical Center working as a paramedic instr uctor at Hudson Valley Community College, also is a medic with Colonie EMS, and at Whiteface Mountain. He has author ed several textbooks for paramedic students, often collaborating with his wife, paramedic Kirt Elling.

“Teaching others to be EMTs and paramedics saves lives, but changing the laws will have the greatest impact on p revention,” E lling s aid.

“If e veryone w ho g raduates from high school learns CPR, we can be assur ed that the general public knows what to do if someone collapses with sudden cardiac arrest in front of them.”

Mock accident gives students view of drinking and driving dangers

keith@denpubs.com WESTPORT — Before members of the Westport Volunteer Fire Department started their mock accident May 5, W estport Central School superintendent Dr . John Gallagher took a letter fr om his pocket.

“I have been asked to er ad this to you by someone who wanted to be here to talk with you today ,” Gallagher said.

The man was Alex Canning, a leader at Camp Dudley who nearly lost his life during a New Year ’s Eve accident just over four months ago, an accident which claimed the life of his friend, John Frankel.

“The experience and time since the accident has changed my life,” Canning’s letter stated. “I r emember waking up with br eathing tubes down my throat ... My family was surr ounding me informing me what happened and that my best friend had perished.”

After the scene, students said that the mock accident and letter from Canning impacted their thinking.

ECH earns national Joint Commission accreditation ELIZABETHTOWN — Elizabethtown Community Hospital has earned Joint Commission accr editation by demonstrating compliance with national standards for health care quality and safety in hospitals.

The accr editation awar d r ecognizes the hospital’s d edication t o c ontinuous c ompliance with Joint Commission standards.

ECH underwent a rigor ous, unannounced, on-site survey on Feb. 7 and 8. A team of Joint Commission surveyors evaluated the hospital for compliance with quality and safety standards specific to the needs of patients, oversight of the hospital’s buildings, or ganization leadership, and documentation standar ds. Surveyors inspect p atient c harts, p hysician c redentials and documents r elated to each piece of equipment within the facility — everything from sophisticated radiology and lab equipment to fire extinguishers.

Lady Lions force softball extra innings before falling to Panthers

keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — In an early season test, the young Elizabethtown-Lewis Lady Lions varsity softball team showed that they could stand paw-to-paw with the Lady Panthers of Crown Point.

KyLee Cassavaugh scored the game-tying run in the bottom of the sixth inning, for cing extra innings befor e the Panthers emerged with an 8-4 win May 9.

“There is no quit in these girls,” Lions head coach Jim Monty said. “They wer e down a r un late and then down six r uns in the ninth inning, and they fought hard both times to get back in it.”

The Lions held a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Alyssa Sullivan reached on a walk and scored on a wild pitch.

Crown Point r esponded with r uns in the third and fourth innings to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead.

Leading of f the sixth, Cassavaugh connected on one of her two base hits in the game, stealing second and getting to thir d on a wild pitch. Lions pitcher Andrea Le Vien then grounded out to second base, scoring Cassavaugh to tie the game at 2-2.

The teams then exchanged zer os in the seventh and eighth innings.

In the top of the ninth, the Panthers wer e able to load the bases with no outs and then capitalize on six Lion erro rs to plate six ru ns.

However, the Lions responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring twice befor e Crown Point pitcher Lindsay Brace r ecorded the final out.

“There was a lot a pre ssure, and this is not a situation you can work on,” Monty said.

“We had seven sophomores out there, and I couldn’t be prouder of these girls. They now know that they can play with (Cr own Point).”

Le Vien pitched the full nine innings, allowing six hits and only two earned r uns while striking out eight.

Clare Harwood and Abigail Burdo scored the two runs for the Lions in the ninth.

Chris Orsi had two hits while R yan Meyer had one hit and scored twice for the Blue Bombers.

PHS 16, AVCS 4 Will Love allowed only two hits and fanned seven batters while collecting two hits at he plate, scoring four times, to lead the Hornets past the Patriots May 9.

C.J. Worley and Brian Latulipe each drove in four runs. Worley had a double and triple.

John Sikandar and T .J. Burl had the two hits for the Patriots, both singles.

Chazy 13, Keene/Westport 2 Kyle Bissonette scatter ed seven hits and two unearned runs over a full seven innings pitched to get the Eagles past the Beagles May 9.

Bissonette also had two hits at the plate, along with Kaleb Snide and Michael R yba added two each. Ricky Osier hit a triple and Austin Santor recorded a double.

Dave Quaglietta had two hits for the Beagles.

The Lions were able to get into the hit column May 9, but were unable to get past the MVAC power Panthers.

The Eagles played mor e cardiac-stopping Andrew Mitchell connected for a single baseball May 6, scoring twice in their last atand double for the Lions.

AVCS golfers start season strong Blue Bombers earn court wins The Blue Bombers boys tennis team swept the doubles matches and the girls team swept thr ough its singles matches to earn wins against the Bobcats, 4-1 and 3-2, on May 2.

Mick Stosiek and Dolan Riley scor ed singles wins for the Blue Bombers, while the doubles teams of Keegan Barney — Josh Quinn and Jessie LeSelva — Justin Stosiek also scored victories.

Georgie Knox, Natalia Smith and Georgia O’Leary swept through the singles matches for the Lady Blue Bombers.

Alex Mousseau scored the lone win for the Bobcats in the boys match, while the teams of Katelyn and T essa King along with the duo of Hannah Charland — Shonni V elasquez scored wins for the Lady Bobcats.

John Hickey shot a 35, while Zack Snow added a 37 as the Patriots swept past the Indians May 6.

Sean Pulsifer and Sean Harrigan each scored 40 for the Patriots, while Jamie LaFountain scor ed a 41 and Jacquie Hoey carded a 48.

Bobby Wilkins shot a 44 for the Indians.

Bobbie Dietsche shot a 44 in earning the lone point for the Cougars. Nolan Ried shot a 45 in falling to McHugh.
