Westport Drama Club goes back in time to ‘Modern Millie’

Jacqueline Robertin and Gigi Carroll worked with students on choreography.

The production is the first that Jim Carroll has directed.

“It has been a challenge to fit everything in, but we have been able to work around all of the other extracurriculars and get things together,” Carroll said.

Carroll also added that he was pleased to see several new members of the drama club prepare for their first production.

“We have a lot of new kids, and it is great to see the program grow,” he said.

Tickets for the show are $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors, with a $25 family max.

WESTPORT — The Westport Central School Drama Club will get modern with their 2011 performance.

“Thoroughly Modern Millie,” which will be performed on Friday, April 29, and Saturday, April 30, in the WCS auditorium, is actually set in the 1920s.

“Practice has gone really well,” director Jim Carroll said. “They have worked hard and there are a lot of talented students in the production.”

There will be a 7 p.m. performance on both Friday and Saturday night, while there will also be a 2 p.m. performance on Saturday.

Along with Carroll, the members of the drama club received music direction from Alan Ware.

New pastor, service times at Wadhams United Church WADHAMS — The Wadhams United Church of Christ begins a new chapter in its 174-year history on Sunday, May 1.

The Rev. Michael Richards conducts his first Sunday service at 4 p.m., followed by fellowship and refreshments, then either discussion or a Bible study as determined by the needs of those in attendance. Wadhams services will continue to be at 4 p.m. thereafter.

Born in England, the Rev. Richards moved to Maine as a youth, where he became an Episcopalian acolyte. His faith journey led him to become ordained in three protestant denominations: American Baptist Churches USA, the New York Conference of the United Church of Christ, and the United Methodist Church. Trained in conflict resolution at the Mennonite Peace Center in

Lombard, Ill., he holds a certificate as a Healthy Congregation Facilitator. Currently, he leads two Sunday morning services at the Methodist Church in Saranac Lake, and plans to travel to Wadhams in the afternoon.

He divides his week between the North Country and Hartford, in Washington County, where he lives with his wife, who is also a clergyperson. While there, he is an EMT with the Hartford Rescue Squad and Fire Department. His interests include reading, photography, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, woodworking, music and singing. He has conducted church choirs.

Also upcoming is a community volunteer day, April 30, to put near-finishing touches on their rehabilitated fellowship hall. On Father ’s Day afternoon, June 19, is the 145th Annual Strawberry Festival.

y young friends at the ACAP after school program and I snuck into the school auditorium a few times for active play during March, when it got too wet for sledding or anything else outside. Towards the end of the month, we saw props, costumes, and equipment start to appear, as the Drama Club began rehearsals for their spring show, “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” The whole thing looked like a lot of fun.

The show runs this weekend, on Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30 at 7 p.m., with a matinee at 2 p.m. on Saturday as well.

It’s directed by Jim Carroll, with musical direction by WCS alumnus Alan Ware and choreography by Jaqueline Robertin and Gigi Carroll. Stage veterans Alexa Melendez and Liam Davis lead a talented cast (including some notable after school program “graduates”). This charming and humorous musical is set in the 1920s. Millie, a young woman from Kansas, arrives in New York City to find a rich guy and marry him — but somehow, things don’t work out quite as she

imagined they would.

Jim told me he’s proud to be working with such dedicated students. “The kids have worked really hard on the show,” he said.

“They are involved in everything, so scheduling is challenging. But they always manage to do it. The benefit of a small school is that everyone works together to make things happen.”

The talents of WCS students will also be on display at the Westport Library on Thursday, May 4, starting at 6:30 p.m., when the legendary Mr. Gibbs will bring members of his English class to read their own poetry in the Library’s annual Poetry Reading. All budding poets from the region are also invited to come and read their work. If you’ve written any poetry at all, this is a great chance to read it out loud for an audience, which is the way poetry was originally meant to be enjoyed. Everyone is welcome and refreshments will be served. This free event is brought to you by Judith Moore and the Westport Poetry Workshop. Call 962-8964 for more information.

he Boquet River and Lake Champlain bear watching closely as they are running high and swift; so far there is no known real damage, and we are hopeful it stays that way. It is great to see the spring flowers and shrubs showing signs of blooming. It seems like Easter came early this year and it was impressive that our local churches had a nice variety of special services to remind us of the importance of this past week.

We are happy to welcome more of our regulars back, like Ruth Young and Bonnie Elliott.

It was also nice to see Lorie Lincoln Torrance as she was here visiting her mother for the Easter Holiday.

As a community, we are very blessed to have such a great fire department and rescue squad they get called out at all hours and holidays. On Easter Sunday, they responded to a truck fire on Mountain View Drive. There was a great article in the Plattsburg Press on Sunday of many of our local volunteer groups that are going even farther in their training to developing rescue techniques for North Coun-

nother fine movie is coming up at the Whallonsburg Grange this Saturday night at 8. It’s “The King’s Speech,” about a stuttering British monarch and his speech coach, and it won four Oscars at this year’s Academy Awards. The Champlain Valley Film Society, the sponsors of this showing, continue to bring excellent films to our neck of the woods.

You may have noticed piles of soil on your lawn now that the snow is gone. These are created by voles or moles, two separate species that like to dig and live in burrows.

Moles prefer to eat earthworms and other soil invertebrates, while voles are generally vegetarians with a fondness for plant roots and bulbs. Moles are gray and equipped with large paws for digging, while voles are brownish and closely resemble mice. I plant spinach every fall with the hopes of having it survive under mulch to produce a crop in the early spring, but this has been a futile exercise except for this year. Voles have been the cul-

try special needs. Volunteers are what makes our North Country communities stand out and we never have enough to fill all of our needs. So the appeal is out for many to come forward and offer us at least a three hour shift in one or another at our several sites a week.

I am very proud of our local school board, superintendent, staff and the teachers for truly holding the line on the next year’s school budget; it is a very fair budget especially in this economic downturn. The school budget is coming up for vote on May 17, from noon to 8 p.m., hopeful you will come out in numbers to vote. I am always pleased to report the success of former local graduates as they go on to higher education. I recently learned that two former WCS students, Ben Rowe and Katie Shephard, now attending Plattsburgh State were recently inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. Congratulations to you both; we are all very proud of your hard work.

prits. I planted spinach in early September and covered it with a piece of fabric called a row cover. Row covers look like dryer sheets and admit light while providing some protection from the elements. It worked, because now I have a great crop of spinach with thick green leaves coming along.

I’ve returned to Reber, just back from a long trip. I drove home from Texas last weekend and got an excellent view of spring unfolding.

Winter wheat is forming heads and corn is nearly knee high south of Dallas, but they need rain. The Mississippi River was full, and had flooded into low lands along its banks on the Arkansas side. From Tennessee all the way back to New York there’s been too much rain, and no field work was going on. Dogwoods and redbuds were blooming and provided some color in the drab woods. There were lots of tornado and thunderstorm warnings in Kentucky and Ohio, but all I experienced was a deluge that washed the Texas dust off the car.

ther than my yard, I believe that my house is ready for the warmer weather. I just need to repair my lawn mower, which seems to hate the sand we have for soil. Mowing can be quite an experience with lots of billowing clouds of dust that my air filter just loves.

Still no word on the contests, but I traveled downstate which threw my timing all off.

School is back in session, and my life is in a little more of a regular routine for the moment, so hopefully I will get a chance to call the town office and see where the contests stand.

I also plan to call the library as I’m sure by now some events are scheduled for the spring.

Again, I really love the quality of our small town library and the depth of services available to us.

Something new to report: the fire damaged building where Barkeater Barbeque was located was quickly torn down and the lot leveled.

If anyone knows what is going on with the lot please drop me a line and I will report the goings on here in this column. When in doubt, I see a quick trip to my expert on all things local, Speedy at Arnolds, to get some information.

Recently my neighbor has been burning a lot of leaves. I don’t really mind this at all, but it does drive me nuts to have opened up my house to get some fresh air after our long winter only to have to close back up quickly due to all the smoke. When burning, make sure to follow all the new codes which can be found on the state’s Web site in the Department of Environment section and please keep the neighbors notified so they can plan accordingly and never, ever leave the fire unattended.

I’m reading more than enough about wildfires in the paper, and I don’t want to see it in the local section of the news at all.

The train is back — get on board T

hey’ve finally done it. After years of back and forth among Warren County supervisors regarding the passenger train that runs from North Creek to Corinth — during which time they dumped hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars into a line often characterized as “the train to nowhere” — they have committed to giving it a wholehearted effort this time.

Six months of contractual negotiations between the Warren County Board of Supervisors and potential operators has led to an agreement with Iowa Pacific Holdings LLC. The company hopes to have freight trains running by July.

Supervisors should be commended for this agreement, which promises to be a financial boon to the county. It’s estimated the railroad will produce $82,000 in revenue through both tourist and freight traffic the first year of operation, compared to

For the first time in a long time, Warren County should see a substantive return on the $8 million in grant money used to refurbish the dilapidated railroad infrastructure, in hopes the region would reap the rewards through trains carrying skiers and tourists to the region.

In reality, that failed to happen, leaving local taxpayers crying foul as county leaders continued to throw good money after bad. Complicating matters was the agreement that grant monies would have to be paid back if the railroad weren’t used for its original intent.

Enter Iowa Pacific.

The company handed Warren County a proposed contract — inches thick — in December of 2010, saying they saw an opportunity worth investing in. They said they weren’t afraid to make it happen in upstate New York or inside the Blue Line. This air of confidence from a company with a long history of successfully operating railroads — it already owns six — is a welcome breath of fresh air.

Perhaps supervisors should have done it right the first time with this type of agreement instead of a line dedicated to a tourist train — which Ed Ellis, the presi-

dent of Iowa Pacific Holdings LLC called a losing venture — but it now appears there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel.

And it could not have come at a better time.

The withering economic infrastructure of the Adirondack Park has been making local politicians, business owners and residents sweat for years.

The reintroduction of freight on the lines of the Saratoga and North Creek Railroad will do much more than make the rails profitable, according to Ellis. Under the new contract, tourists trains will continue on the lines and will be joined by trains hauling freight — potentially the best of both worlds. The presence of both will also open up opportunities for bigger and better recreational opportunities including ski trains and commuter services — to name a few.

Lastly, as the tracks continue from Corinth to the Amtrak lines of Saratoga and beyond, the possibility becomes very real of boarding a train in North Creek and rolling into Penn Station in New York City several hours later.

That is just the sort of economic boost to this region that people like former Johnsburg Supervisor Bill Thomas envisioned

when he championed for a county takeover of the railroad lines a decade ago.

It now appears the train to nowhere is indeed going somewhere.

I question why a couple of our elected officials, Supervisor Noel Merrihew and his brother-in-law Councilman Kenneth Fenimore, have taken such an interest in one of their constituents who has been providing a valuable public service to the people of Elizabethtown.

For example, I refer to the Councilman Fenimore’s letter to the Editor in a recent issue of the Valley News. In that letter, he had the audacity to criticize the accuracy of Margaret Bartley’s Town Board meeting summaries that are placed as an insert in the local issue of the Valley News once a month. Bear in mind, these summaries are backed up by a tape of each monthly Town Board meeting that is aired each Friday on Charter ’s Government Channel. Personally, I feel that Ms. Bartley is doing the people in this town a great public service by providing these informative summaries at her own time and expense. Councilman Fenimore’s letter in which he misstated the facts, I find to be way out of line for an elected official.

If I recall correctly, a couple of years ago Councilman Fenimore wrote a letter to the Valley News, and in it he stated that he would never write another one. Why should we believe what he has to say now?

I started writing this column last Saturday, prior to Easter services, and hadn’t drafted the ending yet. Then Father Riani, of St. Elizabeth’s in Elizabethtown shared this simple story with his congregation. It’s a story about a little water beetle.

Once, in a little pond, in the muddy water under the lily pads, there lived a little water beetle in a community of water beetles. They lived a simple and comfortable life in the pond with few disturbances and interruptions.

Once in a while, sadness would come to the community when one of their fellow beetles would climb the stem of a lily pad and would never be seen again. They knew when this happened; their friend was gone forever.

Then, one day, one little water beetle felt an irresistible urge to climb up that stem. However, he was determined that he would not leave forever. He would come back and tell his friends what he had found at the top.

When he reached the top and climbed out of the water onto the surface of the lily pad, he was so tired, and the sun felt so warm, that he decided he must take a nap. As he slept, his body changed and when he woke up, he had turned

In my opinion, under the present leadership, things in Elizabethtown will never change for the better. There is too much animosity between some of our elected officials and those whom they are supposed to serve. We need new people in office who are willing to work with the people in this town, not work against them. Reluctance to act upon issues in a timely manner has cost this town time and again.

A change is long overdue.

into a beautiful blue-tailed dragonfly with broad wings and a slender body designed for flying.

So, fly he did! And, as he soared he saw the beauty of a whole new world and a far superior way of life to what he had never known existed.

Then he remembered his beetle friends and how they were thinking by now he was dead. He wanted to go back to tell them, and explain to them that he was now more alive than he had ever been before. His life had been fulfilled rather than ended.

But, his new body would not go down into the water. He could not get back to tell his friends the good news. Then he understood that their time would come, when they, too, would know what he now knew. So, he raised his wings and flew off into his joyous new life!

I, too, am distressed about many current events of the day, but that story seemed to sum up what I was thinking with regards to this column.

We all fear the unknown, but with faith in a higher authority and respect for those of us here in “our pond,” there is a resiliency to persevere. We can spend our time worrying, fighting and complaining, or we can work together to find a way to solve the problems of the day and take satisfaction that we did our best, before our time here comes to pass.

ELIZABETHTOWN — The foot bridge that leads between Water Street and Park Street will be getting a makeover starting Monday.

The deconstruction of the bridge is set to take place on May 2, with supplies and materials starting to arrive on May 9.

The project, which is expected to take about 35 construction days, will be funded by grants from the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Places and the state Department of Health’s Creating Healthy Places Program.

“This has been in the works for about a year,” Jessica Buehler of the Essex County Department of Public Health said. “We have two main grants that are supporting the project to

replace the foot bridge.”

The Essex County Ways and Means Committee voted April 25 to authorize the purchase of materials through the Creating Health Places Grant in the amount of $82,500.

Buehler said that the project calls for the complete dismantling of the steel superstructure and wood, which would be replaced with a new steel superstructure and a composite lumber/plastic support to cover the bridge and stairs on both sides.

“We are looking forward to getting the project started,” Buehler said. “We have an old photo of the bridge and we are going to track the progress and get a photo when the new bridge is completed.”

The foot bridge will be closed starting Monday, May 2 for work to begin.

ELIZABETHTOWN — The Essex County clerk to the Board of Supervisors and her office will be assigning counsel for those in need of representation in family court.

The Essex County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution through the Ways and Means Committee April 25 that would assign the duties of administration for assigned counsel for family court from the office of Judge Richard Meyer to the clerk of the board’s office.

Previously, Judge Meyer was handling the assignments through his office, but in the wake of state spending cut-backs had to turn the responsibilities back to the county.

Students learn with laptops

keith@denpubs.com WILLSBORO — A computer for every student is a reality for three English classes at Willsboro Central School.

In fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade English classes, students are able to use a laptop computer which was funded through the E-Rate Program, which is money given by cable and telephone companies to help bring more technology into schools, according to school Superintendent Stephen Broadwell.

“It has helped them to be more excited about writing,” said Tara Valachovic, who teaches the three English classes. “We have a laptop for each student that is shared among the three classes and there may only be one or two times when there are students doubling-up on a laptop.”

In all, the English classroom has 15 small laptop computers that allow students to access the Web and write for class.

“It has improved their writing and presentation and they can identify problems more easily now,” Valachovic said. “The main drawback is that because the state tests concentrate on handwriting skills, we have to make sure that there is a balance in the time they spend writing both ways.”

Broadwell said that currently, students have to leave their seats in order to access the Internet.

“The next step is to actually go wireless in the classrooms,” Broadwell said. “Then the stu-

dents will be able to access the Web right from where they are sitting.”

Along with wireless capabilities, the school is also looking into using E-Rate funding to expand the program into the middle school.

Broadwell and Valachovic both said that the students have been appreciative of the laptops and have taken excellent care of them.

“We had one student who dropped one of the laptops, and you could tell just how scared they were,” Valachovic said. “The machine was okay, but they were concerned.”

“I think that the computers are helpful because, instead of writing everything, we can type it and learn how to type faster and better,” sixth-grader Alex Bliss said.

“I think they have changed our class by learning more about computers and having the ability to access the Internet,” fifth-grader Paul Fine-Lease said. “I think it has helped us all.”

“It makes it so much easier to work on projects,” sixth-grader Connor Steeves said.

Jay nearing grant’s end phase JAY — The town of Jay is currently wrapping up the end phase of the $200,000 matching grant awarded by the NYS Office of Community Renewal to improve its Main Street business district and streetscape.

The town’s “NY Main Street Application Summary” was finalized and mailed on March 24, 2008 by the Essex County Housing Assistance Program (HAPEC) office and since then the town’s target area of the central business district has seen a positive transformation.

Over the last two years, entrepreneurs of storefronts and apartment buildings within the scope of the application were offered an opportunity to secure a portion of the matching grant the town of Jay received, as well as the Apartment Housing Rehabilitation Grants secured through HAPEC for Essex County.

Town of Jay Supervisor Randy Douglas said, "In 2005, the Town Board and I appointed a Revitalization Committee to compile the wants and needs of our community. The newly formed committee (which meets on a monthly basis) consisted of business owners, residents, appointed and elected officials from both the town(s) of Black Brook in Clinton County and Jay in Essex County."

The town of Jay, in conjunction with HAPEC, initiated the first phase of the Au Sable Forks Downtown Revitalization Plan and acquired the necessary Technical Assistance Grant of $15,000 from the then Governor's Office of Small Cities. The Town of Jay hired Barton & Loguidice, P.C. (B&L), to develop a conceptual plan for the revitalization of Au Sable Fork Downtown, translating the town's vision into a graphic design and accompanying narrative.

This conceptual plan is now used as an integral part of the revitalization grant applications submitted to state and federal funding agencies by the town of Jay, the Essex County Planning Office and HAPEC. Even former Governor Elliot Spitzer was caught on camera holding the “Town of Jay Au Sable Forks Downtown Revitalization Plan" in his hand after meeting with Supervisor Douglas, which ran in numerous newspapers.

The town of Jay’s Main St. business district and streetscape has seen nearly a half a million dollars in improvements over the past two years. The NYS Office of Community Renewal has awarded $200,000 to businesses and landlords to offset the $200,000 invested by owners involved in this project. In addition to these recently received grant monies, the town has secured $800,000 since 2006 in Housing Rehabilitation Grants for low-to-moderate income fam-

ilies, $75,000 in a Home Improvement Grant and over $10,000 in a NYS Department of State Local Waterfront Revitalization Grant for Gateway Signs to the town and other streetscape improvements.

"These grants are highly competitive and I am very proud of the improvements obviously noticeable to improving the town of Jay," Douglas said.

Supervisor Douglas complimented the Au Sable Forks Revitalization Committee (CoChaired by Sue Pulitzer and Amy Shalton), his office staff Susan Richards and Carol Hackel/Greenley, DPW Director Chris Garrow and the entire DPW staff, the Jay Town Board, HAPEC officials Emily Kilbourne, Alan Hipps and Bruce Misarski, Engineers Barton Loguidice, P,C. and Local Waterfront Revitalization Administrator Melissa McMannus and all the town of Jay entrepreneurs who continue to participate in improvement plans.

Sue Pulitzer, Revitalization Co-Chair, said, "The Revitalization Group is encouraged by the positive support of the Towns of Jay and Black Brook and the enthusiastic response from the community. We look forward to continuing to play a role in creating an awareness of the special character of our town that makes it such a wordeful place to live and do business."

Early this spring, residents and visitors of the town of Jay will be greeted with new Gateway Signs in Au Sable Forks, Jay and Upper Jay. The source of funding for these Gateway Signs come from two grants that the town of Jay applied for and received through the NYS Office of Community Renewal (Main Street) grant and the Department of State Local Waterfront Revitalization grant, in which the bulk of our funding came from.

Melissa McManus was hired to administer the Local Waterfront Revitalization grant for several Essex County municipalities, including Jay, Keene, North Elba, Lake Placid and Wilmington. This grant helped the High Peaks communities complete projects and initiatives for their community revitalization through economic development, enhancing public access and promotion of the High Peaks waterfronts as an important resource for recreation and tourism.

Douglas said, "We will continue to look for grant funds to improve our appearance. Currently, Jay Officials and the Revitalization Group are working on details to bring the Adirondack Farmers Market to Au Sable Forks for this summer."

LAKE PLACID — Come May 7, the command will come for 175 bikers to “start your engines.”

It’s a phrase that NASCAR great Kyle Petty heard 829 times as a driver on the Sprint Cup Series (formerly the Winston and Nextel Cup Series) and has since heard nine times as part of the Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America.

The event, which enters its 17th year in 2011, helps to raise funds for the Victory Junction Camp, which he founded to honor the memory of his late son, Adam, who was killed in a practice crash in New Hampshire.

This year, the fundraising motorcycle rally will start in Lake Placid, with the first stage opening on Saturday, May 7, running from the High Peaks Resort to Corning.

“We are real excited to have them come here,” Cathy Pfohl, director of community relations and events with the Lake Placid Visitors Bureau said. “Lake Placid will be the headquarters, with those being at the High Peaks Resort.”

Pfohl said that the morning of May 7 will be exciting.

“There will be about 175 bikes that will leave from the resort and there will be spectators as well,” she said. “They will take off through the towns and villages on their way to Corning as the first leg of the trip.”

A lot of times at a fuel stop there will be race fans that come out and want to see the bikes and donate to the charity. It’s pretty cool.”

Petty said that the bikes that are part of the charity ride will start to unload in Lake Placid on Wednesday, May 5, with the riders to follow.

“People will start coming on Thursday and Friday, so there will be a lot of bikes in town,” Petty said. “The people that ride are the greatest people in the world. They give a week of their time and it is for a good cause.”

Bringing the ride to Lake Placid had a lot to do with his friends in racing, including Geoff Bodine, who had held recently an annual bobsledding event at Mount Van Hoevenberg.

“A group that goes on the ride with us every year, including Geoff, had been up there for that and they just kept raving about how nice Lake Placid was,” Petty said.

The Ride for Charity started as a unique way for NASCAR drivers and crew members to return to their race shops in North Carolina after an annual race in California.

For the ride, Pfohl said that the event is an invitation only ride that keeps riders on their bike during the duration of each day trip.

“It’s really cool because they don’t have to stop at any stop signs,” she said. “There is a team that goes to gas pumps ahead of time and the bikes drive in and they do not have to get off the bikes. All they have to do is take the gas cap off and the team that is there will fill the tank for them, so they do not have to get off the bikes at all until they get to Corning. It’s a cool way to go through town, and all along the way there are people that come out with signs and try to get autographs at the gas sites.”

As part of the event, the High Peaks Resort will be hosting a fundraiser in he Dancing Bears Lounge from 5 until 8 p.m. on Friday, May 6.

“All of the money raised will be presented to Kyle for his charity,” Pfohl said.

The Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America will run from Lake Placid to Amelia Island, Fla., and runs from May 7 until May 14.

“Adam started racing when he was 12 or so messing with go-karts and started moving up just like the guys at the local tracks there,” Petty said. “We had talked about doing something after the accident. We had been to a camp on one of our charity rides.

We had talked about how cool it would be to have something like that and the camp tied into everything else that we were doing.”

Petty said that the camp fit in with the causes that Adam was championing before his death.

“He was doing a lot with Sprint to connect children’s hospitals together, and it all tied into the stuff that we were doing and the stuff that he was doing,” Petty said.

Petty said that he was looking forward to the ride, and that people would know when the group of 175 bikers was leaving Lake Placid.

“By that time on Saturday, they might be happy to see us go,” he joked. “They will hear us, though.”

Conference Center preps to open

keith@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — The finishing touches are being put on the Conference Center of Lake Placid, and the first group to use the facility will be coming soon.

“The first group that we have in here is the New York Child Passenger Safety Group,” Jim McKenna, president of the Lake Placid Convention and Visitors Bureau and Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism (ROOST), said. “They will be here on May 11, and we expect about 400-500 people to attend.”

McKenna said the center should be ready to go soon.

“We hope that the conference center will be up and operating about a month from now,” McKenna said. “We have some other groups booked as well.”

McKenna said the conference center has been a “positive” that was brought to the area through the work of state officials and the Olympic Regional Development Authority.

“We have to go back to the last year of Gov. George Pataki,” he said. “He’s the one that identified, working with ORDA, that it would be good for the economy of this northern Adirondack area to get a more modern and up-to-date conference center facility built.

tion and really, it has all come to fruition over the last two years. When ORDA does the grand opening, I think people are going to be quite impressed with that facility.”

McKenna said the conference center will be the centerpiece of working to fill in the “holes” between the winter and summer seasons.

“What we are more concerned about is evening off the seasons, and this conference center gives us the ability to fill in the spring and the fall months,” McKenna said.

“What we hope to see is that this facility will help us to establish a viable meeting market at the time of year when it is quiet around here. That is when that facility will show its worth because it will provide and area for people to come from throughout the northeast to have their meeting and to

enjoy the Adirondack ambiance.”

McKenna said the center can also lead to economic growth in the region.

“That leads to new and better jobs in the area and better benefits for people,” McKenna said. “That is a formula that we believe can work in the Adirondacks as we move this tourism plan forward.”

Overall, the conference center is just another tool in working to provide a solid regional tourism industry foundation, McKenna said.

“There’s a lot of ingredients that work together to make a successful tourism economy, and we are finding out that we are much better off working with all the towns in the region in working together to ensure a successful season and that is certainly starting to happen,” he said.

“I like to be up in the w o o d s , ” Ta y l o r s a i d . “ I s t i l l do my own mowing and I have a brush hog on my tractor that I use to clear things. I was cutting last year for the w i n t e r, b u t I g a v e u p u s i n g the chain saw this year.”

Along with working outdoors, Taylor also enjoys time in nature as a hunter, getting his last deer at the age of 93.

“I started in a age 16 or 17, maybe even a little before then — the rules weren’t quite like they are now,” Taylor said. “I’m the only one left of my hunting party.”

I guess you could say that I got bit by the horseshoe bug.”

H o w e v e r, t h e re i s o n e p a r ticular rivalry that Taylor always remembers. “ We w e re o v e r i n Ve r m o n t competing, and there was this girl,” Taylor said. “It took me four times to beat her.”

Along with being an avid o u t d o o r s m a n , Ta y l o r a l s o could help liven up any party with his trusted fiddle.

“I really enjoyed the music w h e n I w a s y o u n g , ” Ta y l o r said. “I would play for the square dances. I enjoyed that.

I would take my fiddle everywhere.”

Taylor said that often, at the end of the meetings at the Wadhams Grange Hall, he and some friends would tune their i n s t ru m e n t s a n d p l a y f o r t h e dances that always followed the meetings. “ T h e k i d s f r o m We s t p o r t would always show up just as the meeting was ending,” he said. “I would tune the fiddle up and we would play for the dance.”

Taylor said that he appreciates the music of his generation.

“This modern music, I can’t get much into,” he said.

Ta y l o r s a i d t h a t h e h a s e n joyed everything that he has been able to do and accomp l i s h o v e r t h e p a s t c e n t u r y, which he believes is behind his longevity.

“You gotta look at the bright side of things instead of the d a r k s i d e , ” Ta y l o r s a i d .

“Don’t go around with a chip on your shoulder. It’s better to have something to laugh at.”

Lake Placid now seeking new village clerk

denpubs@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — The village of Lake Placid announced April 18 that it would begin accepting applications for the position of village clerk.

The decision follows a scathing December audit from the state Comptroller ’s Office that pointed to long-time Clerk Katherine “Kook” McKillip as the main culprit.

Mayor Craig Randall decided not to reappoint McKillip during a village board meeting last week.

Among about a dozen violations, the audit reported that McKillip, who was in charge of payroll, paid herself more than $20,000 she did not earn. The audit also found that she paid herself nearly $10,000 for unused vacation time, a practice that

was condoned by village officials but not done legally.

A criminal investigation into McKillip’s actions is ongoing.

McKillip remains at her post and village officials say she is permitted to reapply for the position. Whether they rehire her depends largely on developments in the investigation, Randall said.

McKillip said last week that she hopes to remain as village clerk.

“I absolutely love my job, and I’m good at what I do,” she said.

Randall and the village board have accepted part of the responsibility for the village’s accounting problems, but also blamed staff shortages and a lack of technical oversight for the accounting errors.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER The Village of Tupper Lake Has Levels of Total Trihalomethanes (TTHMs) and Haloacetic Acids (HAAs) Above Drinking Water Standards Our water system has violated a drinking water standard. Although this is not an emergency, as our consumers, you have a right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct this situation.

We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants. Test results collected in February 2011 show that our system exceeds the standard, or maximum contaminant level (MCL), for Total Trihalomethanes (TTHMs) and Haloacetic Acids (HAA5s).

The standard for TTHMs is 80 mcg/l (micrograms per liter. The average concentration of the Total Trihalomethanes taken through the 1st quarter of 2011 was 93.9 mcg/l.

The standard for HAA5s is 60 mcg/l (micrograms per liter). The average concentration of the Total Haloacetic Acids taken through the lst quarter of 2011 was 107.6 mcg/l.

What should I do?

If you have specific health concerns, consult your doctor. You may also wish to use an alternative water supply as your primary drinking water source (e.g. bottled water certified by NYS DOH).

What does this mean?

This is not an immediate risk. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. Trihalomethanes are a group of chemicals that includes chloroform, bromoform, bromodichloromethane, and chlorodibromomethane. Haloacetic acids are a group of chemicals that includes mono-, di- and trichloroacetic acids and mono- and dibromoacetic acids. Trihalomethanes and Haloacetic acids are formed in drinking water’ during treatment by chlorine, which reacts with certain acids that are in naturally-occurring organic material (e.g., decomposing vegetation such as tree leaves, algae or other aquatic plants) in surface water sources such as rivers and lakes. The amount of Trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids in drinking water can change from day to day, depending on the temperature, the amount of organic material in the water, the amount of chlorine added, and a variety of other factors. Drinking water is disinfected by public water suppliers to kill bacteria and viruses that could cause serious illnesses. Chlorine is the most commonly used disinfectant in New York State. For this reason, disinfection of drinking water by chlorination is beneficial to public health.

TTHMs- Some studies suggest that people who drink chlorinated water (which contains trihalomethanes) or water containing elevated levels of trihalomethanes for long periods of time may have an increased risk for certain health effects. For example, some studies of people who drank chlorinated drinking water for 20 to 30 years show that long term exposure to disinfection by-products (including trihalomethanes) is associated with an increased risk for certain types of cancer. A few studies of women who drank water containing trihalomethanes during pregnancy show an association between exposure to elevated levels of trihalomethanes and small increased risks for low birth weights, miscarriages and birth defects. However, in each of the studies, how long and how frequently people actually drank the water, as well as how much trihalomethanes the water contained is not known for certain. Therefore, we do not know for sure if the observed increases in risk for cancer and other health effects are due to trihalomethanes or some other factor. The individual trihalomethanes chloroform, bromodichloromethane and dibromochloromethane cause cancer in laboratory animals exposed to high levels over their lifetimes. Chloroform, bromodichloromethane and dibromochloromethane are also known to cause

effects in laboratory animals after high levels of exposure, primarily on the liver, kidney, nervous system and on their ability to bear healthy offspring. Chemicals that cause adverse health effects in laboratory animals after high levels of exposure may pose a risk for adverse health effects in humans exposed to lower levels over long periods of time.

Chemicals that cause effects in animals after high levels of exposure may pose a risk to humans exposed to similar or lower levels over long periods of time.

What happened? What is being done?

The Village of Tupper Lake has two sources of water, Little Simond Pond and Tupper Lake. Little Simond Pond and Tupper Lake are surface water sources. The Village operates water filtration plants at both source water locations and treats the water with chlorine disinfection. Surface water sources contain naturallyoccurring organic material (e.g., decomposing vegetation such as tree leaves, algae or other aquatic plants). The organic material can form TTHMs and HAA5s when water is disinfected with chlorine.

We are working with the New York State Department of Health to evaluate the water supply and researching options to correct the problem. We are working to resolve the problem by flushing the distribution system regularly. We are also currently investigating the development of a groundwater source for our drinking water (e.g. drilled water wells). Groundwater, or water from drilled well sources, typically does not have the levels of naturally-occurring organic material found in surface water. We have drilled test wells and have identified a highly productive aquifer near the Village’s wastewater treatment plant off of Water Street. lnitial analyses indicate that a groundwater source at this location could produce in the range of 50% - l00% of the water used bythe Village on a daily basis. We anticipate replacing the Tupper Lake source with a new groundwater source during20l2.

Additional TTHMs and HAA5s testing will be conducted during 2011 to demonstrate whether the flushing has been effective for reducing the TTHMs and HAA5s to acceptable levels. For more information, please contact the Village Office at 359-334l.

Daffest continued throughout the weekend

keith@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — Daffest kicked off for the first time on Friday in Saranac Lake, and there is still plenty to do.

The event has received high praise from village Mayor Clyde Rabideau, who singled out the event’s founder, local real estate broker Cherrie Sayles, as the driving force behind the creative mix.

“She was the inspiration and the idea person behind Daffest,” he said.

Sayles said she couldn’t have done it without an outpouring of community support. She thanked a number of volunteers who are contributing to the festival, including Plattsburgh artists Corky Corrado and Tony Bucci, who donated a 5foot-tall sculpture of a daffodil.

“It’s awesome,” Sayles said.

Jim McKenna, president of the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism, said that he feels Daffest can become another major event in the Tri-Lakes area.

“It’s one of those events that we think can turn into a big-time annual event for the region,” McKenna said. “There’s a lot

of fun to be had there.”

Saranac Lake CS cuts 16 jobs to balance budget

denpubs@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake Central School District Board of Education voted unanimously Wednesday to approve a budget with a tax increase of just less than 2 percent after eliminating 16 staff positions.

District Business Manager Dan Bower said the total budget is $27.1 million, an increase of about a half percent from the current budget. He said the tax levy would nudge up to $18.1 million or 1.96 percent

from the previous year.

Bower said administrators made some tough decisions to keep spending in check, but as a result of careful pruning, he believes the budget process garnered respect among the school’s staff.

“I think they saw that we tried to do our cuts with a scalpel instead of a machete, and that it was an open, reasonable process,” he said.

The district was forced to cut spending in the wake of more than $500,000 in state aid cuts and as school enrollments continue to slide. The bulk of the cost savings

will come from staff reductions.

According to Bower, the school won’t refill the positions of nine retiring staff members and five teachers will be laid off, including two Social Studies teachers and a foreign language teacher.

A course called “English as a Second Language” will be dropped and its instructor will be laid off. Two other non-instructive staff positions will also be trimmed through layoffs.

Board member Clyde Baker said he and other board members believe they have passed a responsible budget and that because of a healthy tax base, the school will remain on a good financial trajectory for years to come.

“We’re considered a rich district because of a hefty tax base from second homes,” Baker said. “Financially, we’re in good shape.”

Quick response credited in saving Tissot building

SARANAC LAKE — Firefighters battled a blaze just outside the village of Saranac Lake early Friday morning, April 22.

The fire occurred at 278 State Route 86 —Tissot Construction — in Saranac Lake, a few miles past the Adirondack Medical Center. Fire and rescue officials received the call just after 3 a.m.

Brendan Keough, chief of the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department, said seven trucks and 27 members responded to the blaze.

Additionally, Lake Placid, Bloomingdale and Paul Smiths-Gabriels provided trucks.

SL Village votes for budget

keith@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake Village Board of Trustees unanimously adopted the 2011-2012 budget during the April 25 regular meeting, restoring a paid fire driver in the process.

This year’s budget now carries a 2 percent increase to the tax levy. The tax rate in the town of Harrietstown will decrease by about 7 percent, while the tax rate in the towns of St. Armand and North Elba will jump by about 7 percent, according to village Treasurer Paul Ellis.

Following a series of work sessions, trustees seemed poised to cut four positions in order to zero-out any increase to the tax levy.

The positions included a part-time clerk at the police department, a laborer at the village Department of Public Works, a deputy treasurer, and one paid fire driver.

But after listening to concerns from officials at the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department, trustees opted to restore funding for the fifth paid fire driver.

During the public comment portion of last night’s meeting, Chris Tissot told trustees that keeping a full staff at the fire department is essential to public safety.

Early April 22, his business, Tissot Construction, caught fire and was most likely saved by the fire department’s rapid response.

“I understand that both full-time drivers as well as the chief were able to have water flowing on the fire within five to 10 minutes, which was substantially before other actions were taken at the scene,” Tissot said. “I’ve been informed, and I fully believe, that without all three of them arriving as quickly as they did, the whole structure would have been lost. It’s really pretty amazing that they were able to save it.”

Rick Knapton, who lives across from Tissot Construction and reported Friday’s fire, also spoke in support of the fire department.

“The speed in which they got there was amazing,” he said. “I’d like to see that ability to continue. We all pay home insurance and all this; we don’t use it for 20 years, which is fine.

But when you need it, it makes a big difference.”

Prior to restoring funding for the position, Deputy Mayor Jeff Branch said he spoke with the fire department’s chief, Brendan Keough, over the weekend.

That conversation led Branch to change his mind. But he says that, in the future, the dialogue needs to occur prior to the budget season.

“That’s my one wish, if we could somehow make an agreement that next year at this time we won’t have to fight this because we’ll have some sort of long-term solution,” he said.

The resolution restoring funding for the fire driver position passed unanimously.

After voting on the fire driver resolution, the board voted unanimously to adopt the 2011-2012 village budget.

Trustee Tom Catillaz was absent.

Municipalities near fire contract

TUPPER LAKE — The town of Tupper Lake is expected to sign a contract for the village’s fire protection services in the next few days, a move that would end a controversial standoff between the municipalities.

Village officials had feared they would have to raise taxes by more than 8 percent if the town didn’t sign a contract by its budget deadline at the end of the month.

But with a contract waiting in the wings, the village announced during a budget hearing April 25 that it instead plans to lower village taxes by more than 1 percent.

Town officials have said they want a fixed rate for fire protection services, citing part of a state law that says contracts for such services must be based on a definite sum — one that “cannot be determined by a formula or other technique which depends on future conditions.”

Based on that language, town officials have said the village’s fee, which is based on the town’s real estate assessments, is in violation of state law. They have also argued that the town should take over the fire department since it pays about 70 percent of the cost.

That idea has not gained enough political traction, but the town has succeeded in getting a contract for a flat fee, at least in theory.

The wording of the village’s revised contract now reads that the town “will pay a definite

sum of $129,295,” for fire protection services.

The dollar amount the town is being charged remains unchanged, however, and it’s still based on the same real estate assessment formula the village has always used. The town will also be charged for its share of an equipment purchase, which amounts to about $31,000, a sum town officials had initially taken issue with.

Village officials said during a budget meeting on Monday that the wording has changed, but the substance of the contract has not. The only real change, they said, is that the contract with the town will be for one year instead of five.

Mayor Mickey Desmarais said he expects a signed contract from the town before the village passes its final budget at the end of the month.

Budget talks After juggling several items during a budget hearing, the village of Tupper Lake ended up with a budget plan that would add a new police officer while lowering taxes by more than 1 percent.

The new tax rate would be about $15.37 per thousand of assessed value and total spending would decrease by several thousand dollars from last year’s budget to roughly $1.4 million.

A budget proposal earlier this month predicted a 0.5 percent increase in total spending and a 1.7 percent increase to the tax levy.

Although the numbers aren’t set in stone, the tax levy is approximately $1.65 million, about $16,000 less than it was earlier this month.

Obituaries Alfred W. Jones Alfred Welwood Jones, a lifelong summer resident of Keene, New York, died peacefully on April 20, in Exeter, New Hampshire, where he had resided for the last three years. He was born, the son of Adam L. Jones and Lily Murray Jones, in New York City on July 6, 1915 and grew up in Montclair, New Jersey.

He attended Columbia University and received his Masters Degree and Ph.D. in mathematics from that school. In 1940, he began a long academic career, first at the University of Maine, then at Yale University. His career was punctuated by wartime service in the Pacific from which he returned to teach at the University of Michigan and later at R.P.I. He was a fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton. He left teaching to work for Bell Laboratories in the 1950s and the Institute for Defense Analysis in the 1960s. He returned to teaching in the 1970s: Wayne State University, and finally Florida Atlantic University where he oversaw the transfer of the Computer Math-

ematics Program from the Engineering to the Business School. He retired from teaching at the age of 83, and devoted himself to advanced Buddhist study, Tai Chi, and Qigong. He was an active church member all his life, born and raised a Congregationalist, in young adulthood a Baptist deacon, then a Presbyterian Elder, and finally a Eucharistic Lay minister.

He was predeceased by his brothers Murray and Wallace Jones, both Keene summer residents and by his daughter Alison Jones, his son Bruce [Logan] Jones, and a grandson, Colin Dayhoff. He is survived by a son, Roy Jones of North Hampton, New Hampshire, two daughters: Darcy Jones Fuguet of Cambridge, Massachusetts and Keene, and Laurie Jones Bergamini of Lake Placid, New York, and his third wife, Pierrette Petas Jones of Keene. He leaves 11 grandchildren, and eight greatgrandchildren.

A memorial service, to be announced at a later date, will take place this summer in Keene.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Keene Valley Congregational Church.

News of the Week Police cruiser crash PLATTSBURGH— A city car crash sent a police sergeant and two others to CVPH Medical Center to be treated then released April 18.

City Police Sgt. Kevin Riley was driving, with Lt. Scott Beebie as passenger, through an intersection on the way to a Court Street accident when his cruiser was T-boned by a vehicle driven by James Trow, with his wife Anna as passenger. The Trows, both of Plattsburgh, and Riley went to CVPH for examination. James was ticketed for failure to yield the right of way to an emergency vehicle.

OSHA fines proposed for local company PLATTSBURGH— An OSHA inspection of SOLVE Composites of Imperial Industrial Park has led to a proposed $126,000 in fines for the company. The fines are for a long list of employee safety violations, including exposing workers to fire and explosion danger. Following receipt of the citations, the fiberglass-reinforced plastic panel maker has 15 days to meet with the area director of OSHA, comply, or challenge the findings.

Health insurance change sparks retiree lawsuit ELIZABETHTOWN — Essex County is being sued by 27 retired county employees due to an increase in their health insurance payments. The workers, represented

by Civil Services Employees Association Local 1000, said the increase, which would force them to pay 12 percent of their premiums, violates the terms of their contract. They hope to reinstate their former payment levels of 0-to-8 percent. County Manager Daniel Palmer said he thought the contract allowed up to a 14 percent increase on retiree insurance payments.

Heroin found at Ti traffic stop TICONDEROGA — Town police seized $7,500 of heroin at a traffic stop on April 20. The driver of the car, Zack A. Muroff, 25, of Ticonderoga, and the passenger of the car, Joshua M. Jaenisch, 30, of Crown Point, were arrested for felony third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. Neither Muroff or Jaenisch could post their bails of $25,000 and $20,000, so both were brought to Essex County Jail. Police say they believe the heroin was intended to be distributed in the area.

House fire suspected to be arson TICONDEROGA — The two-story vacant house at 107 Lord Howe St. was nearly completely destroyed by a suspicious fire April 20. There were no injuries.

Flames were first spotted coming from the house at 12:42 a.m. Town firefighters, helped by others from Hague, Putnam, Schroon Lake and Crown Point, didn’t leave the scene until 4 a.m. The tax assessment on the building, owned by J. Slack of Ceres, Calif., was $71,400 this year. In 2007, Ticonderoga saw a number of suspicious fires of vacant houses, including one nearby this most recent blaze, at 85 Lord Howe St.

Fire departments look to recruit younger

denpubs@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — Sitting at a table at the Blue Moon Café in Saranac Lake, Keegan Muldowney takes a break from his meal and recalls that his desire to volunteer and help his community was sparked at an early age.

Keegan’s parents have volunteered as coaches for local sports teams, and he and his siblings have done the same. It’s just something that you do, he says.

But he says his decision to become a volunteer firefighter had a more personal meaning.

“I’ve had a lot of people in the fire service in my family,” he said.

“I lost a cousin in 9/11 who was FDNY. That really hit home.

After that, I felt like it was my turn in my family. So as soon as I was able to, I joined the fire department.”

And what Keegan calls volunteering, others may view as a fulltime job. He currently works for the Lake Placid Police Department as a parking enforcement officer, helps out at the Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department, volunteers as a coach for a number of youth sports teams, and is an active member of the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department.

He’s driven, dedicated, energetic – exactly the sort of recruit fire departments are looking for.

And he’s in short supply.

In recent years, volunteer fire departments in New York have seen a dramatic drop-off in membership. The numbers vary widely across the state – but here in the Adirondacks, many fire departments have seen membership decline by some 15 percent.

“For the first time, I can’t tell you in how long, we’ve not had an actual high school student join our junior program – so that was kind of our first red flag. We’re down significantly over the probably three or four years, probably 10 to 15 percent easily, with our membership,” said Rusty Hall, chief of the Keene Valley Volunteer Fire Department.

According to Hall, his department totals about 25 members – that includes firefighters and emergency responders. He’s been with the department for more than 37 years, and he recalls periods when membership ran in the 40s.

In Warrensburg, a community nearly three times larger than Keene, the fire department has 28 members. And the average age of each member is approximately 50.

So the problem facing many of these departments is two-fold.

As Hall notes, there’s not only a need for more firefighters, but a need for younger recruits.

On the surface, dwindling volunteer totals represent a risk to public safety. It doesn’t take an expert to draw the conclusion that an undermanned fire department isn’t as effective.

Rusty Hall notes that, simply put, more volunteers translates to a more efficient fire and rescue operation.

“It most definitely makes it easier,” he said. “For instance, I’m out of town during the course of the day, so we ultimately run on skeleton crews during the course of the business day, and we have to rely more on our neighbors, and if they, in turn, are running on skeleton crews, the job just gets that much more difficult.”

But there’s another factor at play here – a sort of “what if?” factor.

What if numbers continue declining and volunteer fire departments start vanishing?

Obviously, communities will still need fire and rescue service.

“Several years ago, it was estimated that if we had to pay our volunteers, in New York state it would cost over $7 billion a year.”

That’s Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward, a North Country lawmaker who says the state needs to step up to the plate and better support volunteer fire and rescue personnel.

“We’ve done some little things, like giving out a $100 tax credit here and there. We allow communities to give them property tax reductions. But we don’t really do anything in the larger scheme of things to encourage them not only to come in, but stay in,” she said.

According to Sayward, state mandates require fire and rescue personnel to undergo hours of sometimes costly training. And those training sessions often take place miles

But for young volunteers like Keegan Muldowney, too much training isn’t a deterrent.

“There’s no substitution for training – lack of training is how people get hurt,” he said. “Simply put, that’s how it is. Yes, it’s difficult sometimes to make the trainings and to finish them and to get certified, but lack of training is how people get hurt.”

Seasoned fire and rescue officials like Rusty Hall, or Saranac Lake’s First Assistant Chief Casey Taylor, say it’s life that often gets in the way for potential volunteers.

Taylor says it’s sometimes difficult to retain older volunteers, especially those with spouses, children, and full-time jobs, because the role requires time and dedication.

And Muldowney says it’s no mystery why younger volunteers are hard to find.

“They’re either at school or at work,” he said. “The availability is tough, because you have an unstable life when you’re young these days.

Unless you get right out of college with a stable career, you don’t have a stable income and a stable schedule where you can really commit to yourself and commit to your department that you’re going to be there.”

Sayward has introduced a bill in the Assembly that would allow volunteer firefighters to send their children to a state college or university for four years free-of-charge, so long as they’ve belonged to a department for at least five years, among other stipulations.

“We have to do something significant like that,” Sayward said.

But in a state where lawmakers are looking to slash spending, even for critical services like health care and public safety, looking to Albany may not be the best solution.

That’s why fire departments statewide hosted the first-ever statewide unified firefighter recruitment day earlier this month.

The idea, according to Essex County Emergency Services Director Donald Jaquish, was to open the doors at fire stations and show the public what volunteering is about.

In Keene Valley, visitors got to check out the facilities and try on turnout gear. And the department signed up one new member, according to Rusty Hall.

That might not seem like much, but as Hall points out, one extra person can often mean the difference between life and death in certain situations.

Hall says volunteering as a firefighter won’t make you rich or famous – but the fulfillment is there nonetheless.

“The personal rewards can be there, and fortunately in the number of years I’ve been able to serve my community, I’ve gotten a lot of those rewards,” he said.

Keegan Muldowney says getting involved with the fire department has been rewarding. But he stresses that it goes beyond that – getting involved, he says, is part of the cycle that keeps communities vibrant.

“Even when I was playing high school football, my coaches always preached that when you are at the point in your life when you are able to, you need to give back, just like the people that are giving to you now.”

Canadian studies, geography majors get ax

PLATTSBURGH — The State University of New York at Plattsburgh is suspending the Canadian studies and geography majors programs in the wake of a growing budget deficit.

University President Dr. John C. Ettling said the recent announcement the State Legislature will cut funding for SUNY campuses and hospitals in its 2011-12 budget by $170.1 million has added to the already troublesome situation for the SUNY Plattsburgh campus, which has been facing a $4.3 million deficit.

“Right now, we don’t know what share of the most recent budget cut to SUNY this campus will be asked to bear,” Ettling said. “From the scenarios we’ve been given, in the best scenario we could expect to see a $900,000 cut ... the worst, a $2.3 million cut.”

The university has been making a series of cuts to its budget since fall 2008, said Ettling, to combat the financial challenges it has seen over the last three years. The cuts include the reduction of its workforce since 2008 equivalent to 60 fulltime employees — not exactly 60 employees, noted Ettling — saving the university approximately $3.3 million in salaries alone.

However, overall cuts amount to approximately $3.9 million — nearly a half-million shy of the total deficit facing the university.

“It would be considerably larger if we hadn’t already been cutting budgets for the last two and a half years,” said Ettling.

The suspension of the bachelor ’s degree programs for Canadian studies and geography — which will amount to an estimated savings of $300,000 — was the result of retirements in each department and low enrollments, said Ettling. When reviewed by the university, the Canadian studies program had only four students enrolled toward a major, said Ettling.

Dr. Mark P. Richard, coordinator of the Canadian studies program, said the program actually started the current academic year with three students and recruited six more as the year progressed. The low numbers are hardly news to the university, Richard said.

“It’s always been a small program here at the college,” Richard said. “But, that shouldn’t be taken as a measure of the strength of the Canadian Studies program, because we offer a number of courses. Typically, 600-700 students a year take courses with a Canadian Studies prefix.”

The suspension of the Canadian studies major — which Richard said there has been no indication it will be reinstated — will begin this fall with the 2011-12 academic year and is something Richard considers a major loss for the university.

“SUNY Plattsburgh was one of only two institutions of higher education in the United States to offer a major in Canadian Studies,” Richard said, adding the other is at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash. “So, this is part of our identity here at the college and part of what distinguishes us amongst the SUNY institutions.”

Emily O'Hara, a senior at Plattsburgh State majoring in the Canadian studies program, said she considered the dropping of the Canadian studies major “truly unfortunate news.”

“The program, which often receives funding from external sources in the form of grants and co-operative partnerships, has established a credible reputation at SUNY Plattsburgh,” said O’Hara, who called the program “one of the most comprehensive and multi-disciplinary regional studies programs

in the country.”

The Canadian Studies program has “ingrained” itself in campus culture, said O’Hara, and its removal from the curriculum will affect more people than only those who are majors or minors in the subject. O’Hara said she’s aware of the university’s current financial situation and added she is “confident that the school's administrators are making their best professional judgment in their decision-making process.”

However, O’Hara did add she has concern for other courses being cut.

“I just hope that this decision does not parlay into or form a pattern of cutting additional degree programs in the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences,” she said.

Though the Canadian studies major has been eliminated, the course of study in the program will still be available, Ettling emphasized, and will not affect students currently enrolled for with a Canadian studies or geography major.

“We’ve eliminated the major, but we retained the minor, we retained courses,” he said. “We still have a minor in Canadian studies. We still have the Center for the Study of Canada.

All those things are here, robust and not going away.”

“Geography will continue to teach general education courses and geography courses that prospective teachers need ... We’ll still provide the service courses in geography necessary for people to become schoolteachers and to minor in geography,” added Ettling.

The university will also close the doors of the SUNY Technical Assistance Center, the noninstructional arm of the college which offers economic and community development outreach services. The center, which has been in existence 40 years, has not been bringing in enough money in recent years to cover the center ’s annual operating expenses of approximately $150,000.

“In fact, they’ve been losing money for us for several years now,” said Ettling.

Though it provides a service to the community, the center — which employs a full-time director and clerical specialist — fell on the chopping block because it doesn’t align with the university’s principal mission of educating students.

“So, they were vulnerable,” said Ettling.

Other private organizations such as The Development Corporation and the North Country Chamber of Commerce have also established themselves in the region since the Technical Assistance Center was formed, offering “essentially the same kind of work,” said Ettling, The Technical Assistance Center will close its doors June 30.

By the numbers The following is a list of some of the additional actions being taken to reduce the SUNY Plattsburgh budget for the 2011-12 academic year and the amount to be saved: - Eliminate Freshman Experience Program ($120,000) - Reduce budget for marketing and communications ($85,000) - Reduce budget for art museum over next two years ($50,000) - Discontinue replacement of inkjet printers and centralize printing ($50,000) - Decrease utility costs due to efficiencies and improvements ($50,000).

- Redirect funding from the Center for the Study of Canada to support temp services ($47,000) - Suspend contractual services slated for the proposed eforms/document management initiative ($45,000) - Reduce printing of Plattsburgh Magazine from three issues to two annually ($40,000) The university will also increase voluntary and mandatory student fees for applied music, technology, student health, orientation and intercollegiate athletics.

Waterfest gets thumbs up for July LAKE PLACID — The Greater Adirondack Resource Conservation and Development Council recently received the thumbs up from the village board to hold an educational event called “Adirondack Waterfest” in July beside the Lake Placid Convention-Visitors Bureau. The free event will take place on July 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will highlight local businesses, and educate the public about issues surrounding water quality. Adirondack Waterfest has been held for 13 prior years, but this is the first time it’s been held in the village.

Firefighter’s home saved SARANAC — The home of Scott Leduc, a member of the Saranac Volunteer Fire Department, was spared following a quick response by his fellow volunteers on the night of April 20. While Leduc was able to sleep in his home that night, the building suffered water and smoke damage. His four-car garage, however, was completely destroyed.

Hendrie allegedly commits arson PLATTSBURGH — Jamie T. Hendrie, of Plattsburgh, was arrested April 20, on a felony charge of third-degree arson, for allegedly setting fire to a woman’s car following an argument with her. The car was a total loss. Hendrie was remanded to Clinton County Jail on $15,000 cash bail. The woman in question is believed to be physically unharmed.

Businesses saved from fire PLATTSBURGH — Roto-Rooter and Adirondack Transmission, two businesses housed in a single building, were saved from significant fire damage around 3:45 a.m. April 20 after area firefighters quelled a fire coming from an RV roughly 10 feet away. The building only suffered exterior damage to a siding section that is not believed to effect daily operations. The owner of the RV was not identified.

Missing canoeist still sought by family PLATTSBURGH — Francine Marcel, 56, has still not been found after being reported missing last November. Police searched the Point au Roche family camp she had left to only to find her belongings undisturbed, aside from a life jacket and canoe which had been taken. Marcel, a lover of canoeing, was reportedly seen the day she went missing on the lake. Her family had hoped melting spring ice would reveal clues to her fate, but so far have found nothing.

Beagle ball’s father-son act returns for second season on diamond

keith@denpubs.com WESTPORT — Ethan Markwica knew that he would eventually play for his father as a member of the Westport varsity baseball team.

The surprise came when he found himself also playing for his older brother as part of the Beagles.

The combined baseball program between Keene and Westport Central Schools is entering its second season in 2011, the second time around for the father and son coaching duo of Don (Westport) and Chris (Keene) Markwica.

“It was my favorite year of coaching,” Don said. “Coaching with my son was something that I had always dreamed of doing.”

‘I’m surprised that he gave me as much leash as he did,” Chris said. “It has been very equal between us.”

For Ethan, a junior with the team, it was also an exciting year.

“I was ecstatic when I found out they were both coaching the team,” he said. “I love them both to death and I loved every second of it. It made me work harder for them.”

Red Storm scores lax victories against Section X opponents Boys Lacrosse St. Lawrence 9, SLCS 7 BRASHER FALLS — The Red Storm boys lacrosse team opened the season with their first taste of the outdoors against the defending Section X champion St. Lawrence, falling by a two-goal margin April 19.

Peter Madden scored two goals and added two assists for the Red Storm, while Josh Tremblay scored two goals to go with one assist.

Mike Sapone scored two goals in the loss, while Forrest Morgan added a goal and Matt Martin tallied an assist.

Michael Burpoe stopped 21 shots in goal.

SLCS 10, Heuvelton 6 HEUVELTON — Mike Sapone continued his strong start to the season for the Red Storm boys lacrosse team, scoring five goals and assisting on three other to contribute on eight of the 10 goals in a win against Heuvelton April 21.

Seth Pickreign and Josh Tremblay each scored two goals in the win, while Forrest Morgan rounded out the goal scoring while tallying an assist and Matt Martin recorded a pair of assists.

Michael Burpoe made 20 saves in the win.

SLCS 4, C-PCS 3 COLTON — The early season road trip for the Red Storm boys lacrosse team continued with a 4-3 victory against Colton-Pierrepont April 23, with Josh Tremblay scoring the game-winner, his second in the game, and Michael Burpoe stopping 16 shots in the win.

Forrest Morgan added one goal and one assist in the win, while Seth Pickreign added a goal and Mike Sapone and Oliver Holmes each had an assist.

Red Storm girls lacrosse team drops close game Heuvelton 14, SLCS 11 HEUVELTON — The Lady Red Storm girls lacrosse team dropped their opening match of the season against Heuvelton April 23.

Shannon Muldowney scored five goals and tallied one assist to pace the Red Storm offense, while Rita Munn scored four goals, Alex Covert scored one goal and tallied and assist and Sienna Daviau added an assist.

Regan Kieffer stopped 18 shots in goal.

Don Markwica said that he was surprised at how well the team came together at the beginning of both seasons.

“It was really from the first day of prac-

tice,” he said. “They all showed up at the field and it was like they had gone to school with each other since kindergarten. It was the same this year with all the friendships that they made last season and the fact that they are ready to play together again.”

“We had a marquee game against Willsboro where we were down five runs in the seventh and scored six to win,” Chris said about the team coming together. “That changed the complexion of the entire year and helped build the camaraderie even more.”

Don said that the relationship between he and Chris worked on the field because they share a common approach to the game.

“We have the same philosophy, which really helps,” he said. “Both of us love to play small ball. We also broke up the duties into offense and defense, so Chris would coach first base and I would call the pitches.”

For Ethan, while the experience has been fun, he did single out one coach as giving him that extra “motivation.”

“My older brother is definitely harder on me,” Ethan said. “Don’t get me wrong, Dad throws in his fair share, but Chris definitely gets on me more.”

“Yeah, that’s accurate,” Chris agreed.

Patriots scored season-opening win against Blue Bombers Au SABLE FORKS — Dave Warner earned the opening win for the Patriots while Shane Douglas was part of five runs (3 RBIs, two runs) against the Blue Bombers April 25.

Kyle Sprague and John Sikandar also saw time on the mound for the Patriots, while TJ Burl also hit a double.

Mario Gonzalez hit a double for the Blue Bombers, while Donald Herzog and Chris Orsi worked on the mound.

Saranac Lake 4, Saranac 3 SARANAC — The Red Storm earned their first win of the season, holding off the Chiefs in the late innings April 25.

Michael Phelan hit a double for the Red Storm, while Tyler O’Neill had an RBI and run scored. O’Neill and Adam Mayville each had two hits in the game, while Brian Fortune struck out 11 batters in five innings to earn the win while Jonathan McCabe pitched the final two innings for the save.

Andrew Petro struck out six batters in five innings for the Chiefs, while Dylan Everleth hit a double.

Beekmantown 12, Moriah 7 MORIAH — Frank Buksa drove in three of the five runs scored in the second inning by the Eagles in beating the Vikings April 25.

Buksa finished with a pair of hits, while brother Brandon took the win on the mound with relief help from Foster Ebersole and Luke Weaver, who also hit a double.

PHS 11, NAC 2 PLATTSBURGH — Joe Tolosky started the CVAC portion of the Hornet’s 2011 schedule with a three-run homer as the team wrapped out 14 hits in a convincing win over the Bobcats April 25.

Anthony Porcelli pitched the first four innings to earn the win for the Hornets, striking out 11 of the 12 outs, while Robbie Knowles and Will Love followed on the mound.

Brian Latulipe (3-for-4) and Casey Buck (2-2) hit doubles for the Hornets, while Troy Labombard drove in both NAC runs with a double in the top of the fourth inning.

NCCS 5, Peru 0 CHAMPLAIN — Dalton Castine, Steven Carder and Jamie Davison combined for an opening game shutout for the Cougars against the Indians April 25.

By most standards, the Boquet is a small river.

It tumbles from the Dix Range in the High Peaks Wilderness in a rage of froth and fury, before settling into an intimate tangle of forests, fields and meadows as it flows gently through the Pleasant Valley from New Russia, through Elizabethtown, Lewis, Wadhams, Whallonsburg, Boquet and finally to Willsboro and Lake Champlain.

mouth. I’ve walked the river ’s banks, waded the riffles and jumped into its pools. The river and me, we’re on very intimate terms.

“There is no rushing a river. When you go there, you go at the pace of the water and that pace ties you into a flow that is older than life on this planet. Acceptance of that pace, even for a day, changes us, reminds us of other rhythms beyond the sound of our own heartbeats.” -- Jeff Rennicke, River Days There is no finer method of getting to know a river, than to paddle it; and my first adventure of the new season always involves a canoe trip from New Russia to Elizabethtown.

It is a route that’s mostly flatwater, with a few riffles and a couple of tight moves. Invariably, the journey involves a few carries to get around a logjam, or to haul the canoe over a new timber that straddles the stream.

The route always provides an adventure, the thrill of backcountry surprise and the exhilaration of exploring what lies just around the next bend; will it be a deer, otter or beaver.

Unfortunately, the river ’s once thriving trout fishery, which always produced outstanding opportunities, no longer exists. I can find no one to explain why the upper river appears to be so totally devoid of fish life.

While paddling the same section over the past five years, I have not taken a single trout, nor have I seen any evidence of suckers, minnows or creek chubs.

Paddling a river is a far different experience than hiking a trail. Trails serve to connect places, but the path of a river never ends. Rivers offer a continuum, and although rivers may often be used to define a community or even a region; they always continue on in a never-ending cycle of renewal and refreshment, excitement and awe. I suppose that is indeed their draw.

On the river, we become a part of the scene and learn to flow with it. It can be an intimate experience, when you spook a deer, put up a flock of ducks or find a lone turtle roaming a sandbar.

Bob Marshall, the renowned conservationist, once claimed that, “Each mile on a river will take you further from home than a hundred miles on a road.”

Although it may be the case on most flows, I’ve discovered the opposite holds true. Every mile I travel on the Boquet, brings me closer to home. It is a journey that serves to restore my youthful sense of adventure. The trip lets me be a kid again, if only for a day, and that sure is a nice place to be!

----------------------------ANNUAL DRINKING WATER QUALITY REPORT FOR 2010 Village of Keeseville Water System 1790 Main Street, Keeseville, New York (Public Water Supply ID NY1500283) INTRODUCTION To comply with State regulations, the Village of Keeseville will be annually issuing a report describing the quality of your drinking water. The purpose of this report is to raise your understanding of drinking water and awareness of the need to protect our drinking water sources. Last year, we conducted tests for over 80 contaminants and found some of the contaminants at a level higher than the State allows. This report provides an overview of last year’s water quality.

Included are details about where your water comes from, what it contains, and how it compares to State standards. If you have any questions about this report or concerning your drinking water, please contact Scott Benware at (518) 834-9791. We want our valued customers to be informed about their water utility. If you want to learn more, please attend any of our regularly scheduled village board meetings. The meetings are held the second Tuesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. at the Village Civic Center.

WHERE DOES OUR WATER COME FROM? In general, the sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activities.

Contaminants that may be present in source water include: microbial contaminants; inorganic contaminants; pesticides and herbicides; organic chemical contaminants; and radioactive contaminants.

In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, the State and the EPA prescribe regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. The State Health Department’s and the FDA’s regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public

April 30, 2011 health.

The source of water for the Village of Keeseville is Butternut Pond, a shallow natural pond, located approximately 4.5 miles south of the Village on the west side of Interstate 87 (I87). The water intake piping is 16" cast iron piping and extends approximately 180 feet into the pond.

The intake is located on the north shore of the pond at the end of a peninsula, which runs south into the pond.

Water from Butternut Pond flows by gravity to the dual sand water filtration plant, where the water is filtered and disinfected with liquid chlorine and then pumped into a 308,000 gallon glass line water tank at the filtration plant. The water then flows to the Village through approximately 25,000 ft. of 12" ductile iron main. There is another 500,000 gal. storage tank located on the west side of Prospect Mountain to provide additional system storage and pressure. The Village flushes the fire hydrants three times per year to clean out water mains and has the intake at the pond cleaned twice in spring and fall to help the water quality.

FACTS AND FIGURES Our water system serves approximately 2,300 through 1,000 service connections.

The total water produced in 2009 was 88.4 million gallons and our average daily production was 231,000 gallons per day. The maximum day production was on May 23, 2010 when we produced 550,711 gallons of water.The Village has installed individual water usage meters and will use that information in the future to determine the amount of water lost due to leaks in the system. The current water rates for village customers are $51.25 per quarter for up to 9000 gallons and $3.75 for each additional 1000 gallons.

The rates for customers living outside the village are $102.50 per quarter for up to 9000 gallons and $7.50 for each additional 1000 gallons.

ARE THERE CONTAMINANTS IN OUR DRINKING WATER? As the State regulations require, we routinely test your drinking water for numerous contaminants.

These contaminants include: total coliform, turbidity, inorganic compounds, nitrate, nitrite, lead and copper, volatile organic compounds, total trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids, radiological and synthetic organic compounds.

State regulations require that turbidity must always be below 1NTU. The action level for lead and copper was not exceeded at any of the 10 test sites 4 - Water containing more than 20 mg/l of sodium should not be used for drinking by people on severely restricted sodium diets. Water containing more than 270 mg/l of sodium should

not be used for drinking by people on moderately restricted sodium diets.

5 - The value represents the highest Running Annual Average of the samples collected.

6 - The values represent the range of the samples collected.

7 - A violation occurs at systems collecting less than 40 samples per month when two or more samples collected in the same month are total coliform positive.

DEFINITIONS: M a x i m u m Contaminant Level (MCL): The highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as feasible.

M a x i m u m Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG): The level of a contaminant in drinking water below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MCLGs allow for a margin of safety.

Action Level (AL): The concentration of a contaminant, which, if exceeded, triggers treatment or other requirements, which a water system must follow.

Treatment Technique (TT): A required process intended to reduce the level of a contaminant in drinking water.

Nephelometric Turbidity Unit (NTU): A measure of the clarity of water. Turbidity in excess of 5 NTU is just noticeable to the average person.

Milligrams per liter (mg/l): Corresponds to one part of liquid in one million parts of liquid (parts per million ppm).

Micrograms per liter (ug/l): Corresponds to one part of liquid in one billion parts of liquid (parts per billion ppb).

Picocuries per liter (pCi/L): A measure of the radioactivity in water.

WHAT DOES THIS I N F O R M AT I O N MEAN? D i s i n f e c t i o n Byproducts The Village of Keeseville received violations of Subpart 5-1 of the State Sanitary Code for exceeding the M a x i m u m Contaminant Level (MCL) for Total Trihalomethanes and Haloacetic Acids. The violations are a result of water samples collected in 2009 and 2010. The average concentration of those samples exceeded the maximum contaminant level (MCL) for Total Trihalomethanes in the 1st, 2nd and 4th quarters in 2010. The standard for Total Trihalomethanes is 80 mcg/l (micrograms per liter). The average concentration of the Total Trihalomethanes taken in 2010 was the

highest in the 4th quarter of 2010 at 95 mcg/l. The standard for Haloacetic Acids is 60 ug/l (micrograms per liter). The average concentration of those samples exceeded the maximum contaminant level for Haloacetic Acids in the 1st and 2nd quarters in 2010. The average concentration of the Haloacetic acids taken in 2010 was the highest in the 2nd quarter of 2010 at 73 ug/l.

Trihalomethanes and Haloacetic acids are formed in drinking water during treatment by chlorine, which reacts with certain acids that are in naturally-occurring organic material (e.g., decomposing vegetation such as tree leaves, algae or other aquatic plants) in surface water sources such as rivers and lakes. The amount of trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids in drinking water can change from day to day, depending on the temperature, the amount of organic material in the water, the amount of chlorine added, and a variety of other factors.

Drinking water is disinfected by public water suppliers to kill bacteria and viruses that could cause serious illnesses. Chlorine is the most commonly used disinfectant in New York State. For this reason, disinfection of drinking water by chlorination is beneficial to public health.

Some studies of people who drank chlorinated drinking water for 20 to 30 years show that long term exposure to disinfection by-products (possibly including trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids) is associated with an increased risk for certain types of cancer.

However, how long and how frequently people actually drank the water as well as how much haloacetic acids the water contained is not known for certain. Therefore, we do not know for sure if the observed increased risk for cancer is due to haloacetic acids, other disinfection by-products, or some other factor. The individual disinfection byproducts cause cancer in laboratory animals exposed to high levels over their lifetimes.

Some disinfection byproducts are also known to cause other effects in laboratory animals after high levels of exposure, primarily on the liver, kidney and nervous system and on their ability to bear healthy offspring.

Chemicals that cause effects in animals after high levels of exposure may pose a risk to humans exposed to similar or lower levels over long

periods of time.

Lead If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. The Village of Keeseville is responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components.

When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/sa fewater/lead. IS OUR WATER SYSTEM MEETING OTHER RULES THAT GOVERN OPERATIONS? All monitoring and reporting requirements are satisfied in a timely manner. The water system serving the village is in full compliance with all other regulations.

SOURCE WATER ASSESSMENT SUMMERY The NYS Dept. of Health completed a source water assessment for this system based on available information.

This assessment found a moderate susceptibility to contamination for this source of drinking water.

Land cover and its associated activities within the assessment area does not increase the potential for contamination. While there are some facilities present, permitted discharges do not likely represent an important threat to source water quality, based on their density in the assessment area.

There are no noteworthy contamination threats associated with other discrete contaminant sources.

Additional sources of potential contamination include roadways.

While lakes are not generally considered to have a high natural sensitivity to phosphorus in SWAP, this lake already has algae problems. Therefore, additional phosphorus contribution would likely result in future water quality degradation.

The Health Dept. will use this information to direct future source water protection activ-

ities.

These may include water quality monitoring, resource management, planning, and education programs. A copy of the assessment, including a map of the assessment are, can be obtained by contacting us as noted above.

DO I NEED TO TAKE SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS? Some people may be more vulnerable to disease causing microorganisms or pathogens in drinking water than the general population. Immunocompromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections.

These people should seek advice from their health care provider about their drinking water.

EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium, Giardia and other microbial pathogens are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-4264791).

WHY SAVE WATER AND HOW TO AVOID WASTING IT? Although our system has an adequate amount of water to meet present and future demands, there are a number of reasons why it is important to conserve water: " S a v i n g water saves energy and some of the costs associated with both of these necessities of life; " S a v i n g water reduces the cost of energy required to pump water and the need to construct costly new wells, pumping systems and water towers; and " S a v i n g water lessens the strain on the water system during a dry spell or drought, helping to avoid severe water use restrictions so that essential fire fighting needs are met.

You can play a role in conserving water by becoming conscious of the amount of water your household is using, and by looking for ways to use less whenever you can. It is not hard to conserve water.

Conservation tips include: " Automatic dishwashers use 15 gallons for every cycle, regardless of how many dishes are loaded. So get a run for your money and load it to capacity. " Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth.
