Breathe For Nate Walk planned

keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — An annual walk begun to honor a brother is again seeking participants.

The annual Br eathe For Nate Walk is set to take place on Saturday, May 7, at 3 p.m., starting at the Elizabethtown Social Center.

The walk was founded by Carlee Hammond as a fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and a deserving senior at Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School.

All to honor her br other, Nathan Hammond.

“Nathan battled cystic fibrosis for his whole life and lost his fight April 25, 2007, when he was 16,” Hammond said. “Nathan was known by everyone in the community .

Every year , I hold a walk in his memory, and the money is

for a scholarship for a senior every year at ELCS. Another portion of the money we donate to the Cystic Fibr osis Foundation.”

everal people have asked how things are going in the ambulance squad recently and said they missed reading about it, so it seemed like a good time to devote another column to the subject of EMS response. Just to bring you up to date on my own participation, I joined the squad last year and took the "EMT Basic" course last summer, becoming a full-fledged EMT after passing the exams in November. So I'm still a relative beginner, though I'm gaining experience and confidence.

More than one reader expressed interest in how the squad works. Our squad is a volunteer service, and the biggest point to make is that there are lots of different ways to serve. You don't necessarily have to take the class and become an EMT. You can join the squad as an attendant, which means you ride along and help with things like lifting, or getting stretchers in and out of the rig, and generally making yourself useful. Often it takes several attendants to help get a patient out to the rig, depending

on the circumstances.

Like driving the rigs, being an attendant is a valuable service in itself. We have (I think) about 23 members, and only 8 of those are EMTs. The rest are attendants and drivers, and we rely on them heavily. If you're interested in joining, one thing you might do is start by applying to the squad and serving for a while as an attendant. It's a great way to get some experience and start to learn the ropes. You can always take the class and become an EMT later. If you'd like more information, email me at the address above and I'd be happy to answer your questions. In a future column, I'll describe what happens on a typical ambulance run.

nother big spring deadline to accomplish is to get our income taxes in on time; well, the deadline has come and gone, hopefully our taxes will help provide the services that we all demand. Spring weather is having a hard time making its way to stay; it is still cold and windy. One more spring event happened this past week. The ice sank in Long Pond, and Lake Champlain is reported to be above flood level, with still more snow to melt in the higher regions. There has been a lot of activity at the new restaurant here in town. Look forward to an opening soon.

It is always a joy to welcome back some of our regulars; so welcome back to Frank & Ginny Rankin, Paula Calkins, and Martina Govier. I also heard that a few other summer residents have started to return to get their camps open. Sorry to learn of the smoke damage at Rick & Sarah Sayward’s home on the Middle Road. Smoke damage is hard to clean up, so wish them the best.

’ve been on the road of late, visiting family and friends and lots of car museums. Early April is a fine time to get out of dreary Reber, and my position at the museum in Plattsburgh requires a thorough knowledge of automobiles, which I’m happily gaining at collections both famous and obscure.

Tupelo, Mississippi is not a well known place unless you are a fan of Elvis Presley, who was born there. His mother bought his first guitar in a brick hardware store on Main Street that still carries musical instru-

ments and is run by the same family. Tupelo also is home to a car collection which contains a Lozier, a very expensive car that was at one time built in Plattsburgh. The museum staff kindly let me photograph the car inside and out, and told me its history.

This car was a wreck, but with all its parts, when it was bought by the man who restored it in the 1950s. His workshop was flooded when he had the car halfway reconstructed, and many of the wooden parts were ruined. Old cars had a lot of wooden See ESSEX, Page 8

have started to stretch out my walks again and am venturing back into the downtown area and I suddenly realized something. The dinosaur is gone. I have loved since I moved to Keeseville the metal skeleton of the Tyrannosaurus Rex that peeks out between the bushes on the corner of the intersection on Route 9N. It is just such a neat thing to see all of a sudden and at night with the lighted mouth – very neat. I see that there is a for sale sign on the property, but I would love to know the story behind the dinosaur as well as

to face with a known serial killer — and it was one of the toughest interviews of my life. But, how did it happen? Let’s back up a minute.

I was working feverishly on deadline last Wednesday for one of ourApril 16 editions when I just missed a call.

I picked up the phone and immediately checked my voicemail. It was a call from an Jeremiah Papineau editor at Newsday, Senior Editor a daily newspaper based in Long Island. He was calling in r egard to the rash of murders in the Long Island area, and, in particular, if I had any interest in interviewing Rifkin on their behalf. The editor wanted to know if Rifkin — who’s curre ntly serving a life sentence at the Clinton Corre ctional Facility in Dannemora for mur ders he committed from 1989 to 1993 — had any connection to any of the older human remains found during the course of the investigation there.

My r eporter ’s instinct kicked in, and I quickly called the editor back. I was given the details for the assignment and agreed to take on the char ge. The following morning, I found myself standing at the main gate of the prison. This was it.

I went thr ough several security checkpoints and answer ed numer ous questions before getting anywhere close to Rifkin. The experience of walking into a maximum security prison was surr eal and one I was definitely glad I was doing on my own fre e will.

rock Marvin, a 17-year-old senior at Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School, is alive today because someone donated his/her heart upon death. The heart was successfully transplanted in December, and Brock was back at school in February.

Organ donation is a grown-up decision, one made more complex by the fear of death and the difficulty of dealing with such an emotional topic. Yet this grown-up decision gave Brock a fighting chance at becoming a grown-up and living a long and healthy life.

People don’t have to die in order to donate an organ. A heart, yes, but not a kidney. Such was the case in December, when Westport resident Ben Sudduth donated a kidney to Westport Central School senior Molly Rascoe. She had been on dialysis for more than a year. By January, she was back on the basketball court playing for the varsity girls team.

We urge you to sign up for organ donation. About 97 percent of organ donors sign up through the Department of Motor Vehicles by filling out the “anatomical gift” information on the back of their driver's licenses.

People can also place their names on the New York State Donate Life Registry online at www.nyhealth.gov. Anyone can donate organs as long as they are 18 years old.

The Essex County Board of Supervisors officially recognized April as National Donating Life Month during a recent meeting. Brock, Molly and Ben were all there. We’re just following their lead and asking people to make the selfless gift of their vital organs when the time is right.

After the surgery, Brock’s father said he thought about the family of the person who died and gave the heart to his son: “You just hate to think about what they are going through, but you hope that they would look at Brock and see that their decision or the decision of their loved one is the reason why he is living today.”

Due to strict hospital protocol, organ recipients don’t always get to know the names of their donors or meet their families. It’s up to the donor ’s side of the

family to make the first move.

“We would love to meet them and just have the chance to thank them,” Brock’s father said in December.

A Warrensburg family — the Winslows — last week met the man who received the heart of their son, 24-year-old Ryan Winslow, who died in 2006 after a boating accident on Lake George. More renewable energy To the Valley News: The nuclear crisis in Japan r eminds us of the urgent need to develop r enewable energy sources. In Vermont, though, cont ro v e r s y r a g e s o v e r w h i c h t y p e s o f r e newable ener gy development ar e appr opriate. But this debate is actually moot.

It doesn’t matter whether one believes that wind turbines work or not, or are acceptable on ridge lines. It is a fact of physics that ridge line wind in the Eastern US has very little potential to re place coal and nuclear . According to Department of Ener gy figur es, if all of the onshore commercially viable wind resource of the Eastern United States wer e developed, only about 17 gigawatts of conventional generation could be of fset at best, and probably much less in practice. Compare this with the fact that US demand for electricity is equivalent to 450 gigawatts of continually operating generation, and that electricity accounts for only about one thir d of our ener gy consumption.

Easter services scheduled

PORT HENRY — On Satur day, May 7, at 11 a.m., High Peaks Hospice & Palliative Care will hold their semi-annual memorial service to honor the memory of those they have served and who died in the past six months at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Port Henry, which will be followed an informal reception.

Each person is r emembered by name and loved ones ar e invited to light a candle in their memory. An informal r eception will follow the service.

AuSable Valley proposed budget cuts 19 positions from schools 10-plus teaching positions part of ‘tough’ cuts

keith@denpubs.com CLINTONVILLE — Even with 19 positions up for elimination, theAuSable Valley School District is faced with a budget that could raise the tax levy 6.87 percent in 201112.

“We have been hit harder than most anyone in this r egion, if not the most,” school superintendent Paul Savage said at the April 13 meeting of the AVCS school board where the 201 1-12 budget was adopted for vote. “We have worked hard to keep the balance between pr ograms and services and the communities ability to afford them.”

“This is a tr ue pay fr eeze that also includes freezes to the step incre ases,” Savage said. “This was something that the teachers did to save as many jobs as they could and they did it to help our school and our pr ograms. As far as I know , this is the only teacher ’s or ganization that has done this (the Saranac School District teacher ’s also announced a similar pay fr eeze the same day).”

Members of the administration also took pay freezes, but eventually it came down to the task of making position cuts.

“We have done everything that we can every single day to deal with this,” Savage said. “ school sports can be a fun way to spend the afternoon.

I plan on calling the town office later in the week and see if I can get an update on the summer contests as well as visit the library, as I’m sure Mary and company will have lots planned to keep our summer busy.

Now I just need to find the time to rake my yard, which of course makes the visits to Mac’s ice cream all the more of a reward! Stay safe and well, everybody, and enjoy our great community.

Overall, 40 other areas saw a reduction or elimination in funding.

A t otal of 1 0.8 t eaching p ositions w ere cut, including a guidance position and one position that was vacated through attrition.

One administrative position, 2.4 teaching assistant positions and 4.8 non-instructional positions (two by attrition) wer e also eliminated, bringing the total to 18.8 position that wer e cut fr om the budget under the budget adopted by the school board.

“We understand that this is not your typical incr ease,” Savage said about the 6.87 percent expected jump in the tax levy. “We did all that we could to get this number to where it is, and we are not going to stop.”

Overall, the budget adopted by the board shows a spending incr ease of 5.14 per cent, but Savage said that is due in part to the state-funded EXCELL Capital Project.

“That is funded by state aid,” Savage said. “It has to be shown in the budget, but it is offset by the state aid. What we want to stress is that we made a significant cut in the operational budget.”

Although it has the feel of a shopping mall crossed with a cathedral, you could spend days there absorbing all the displays and technical information. The museum staff was very friendly, but knew almost nothing of the Nashville cars, flat-out saying they preferred American cars. That’s like saying I like hot dogs, so I never eat hamburgers, but I kept that thought to myself.

The best museum I’ve been to so far is near San Francisco, and contains cars that have significant artistic value, rolling sculptures, if you will. My favorite one is a 1920’s French race car with a tulipwood body. It looks just like an Adirondack guide boat up close, with hundreds of tiny brads securing highly polished wafer thin planks to the frame.

On my way home next week I’m stopping at a Packard museum in Ohio, and then that will surely be enough cars for a while. Besides, it’s time to get the garden started.

While this sort of place often holds unexpected gems, I like museums that focus on one style or manufacturer. Nashville, Tennessee has such a place that concentrates on small and quirky European cars, like a Citroen with two engines, one front and one back, and a lots of three wheeled cars.

It’s housed in a former industrial bakery with hardwood floors and tall windows, and demonstrates that small and efficient cars can be attractive and well designed.

ELCS cuts spending plan, but still foresees tax levy increase

keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — At the start of the night, the Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School District budget had a proposed tax levy increase of five-percent.

By the end of the April 14 meeting, the board and administration had cut that down to 3.99percent.

Both cases are better than the original 8.8-percent increase the board was presented with during the initial stages of the budget process.

“It has been a long process from getting from the original deficit to a five-per cent increase to

where we ar e now,” school boar d pr esident Robert W agner said. “The five-per cent was where we requested the administration to be at this meeting, but I have no objections to going lower. This was a har d pr ocess and it was no fun.”

The projected tax levy calls for $3,253,746 to be raised through tax collection, an incr ease of $124,843, or 3.99-percent.

Under 2010 figures, the increase would lead to a 49-cent increase in tax rate per $1,000 of assessed property value. That would mean a tax increase of $49 for pr operty assessed at $100,000.

While the spending plan pr oposed is down

from the $7,504,953 of 2010-1 1, r evenues fell $284,990 fr om $7,504,953 in 2010-1 1 to $7.219,963 projected for 2011-12.

Board member T ammy Apthorp started the meeting by saying that while she was in favor of looking at a five-per cent increase at the last meeting, she wanted to see if ther e was any chance the levy could be lowered more.

“I just think that it is too much,” Apthorp said. “I feel there are things that we should still trim.”

“If tweaking can get us down another percent, then I can’t think of any school board that would not do that,” boar d member Karin DeMuro said. “I do not feel comfortable about a

five-percent increase after talking to people.”

“I want it to be lower and I am not comfortable with the per centage, either,” board member Karen Hooper said.

As part of the “tweak,” board members asked the administration to add $10,704 in fund balance that would be used to offset state aid cuts, bringing the total of used fund balance to $510,704 for the 2011-12 budget, compared to a fund balance usage of $415,000 in 2010-11.

Wagner said that he was concerned with using much more of the reserves.

“I will make it very simple in my message to the voters and say that her e ar e the numbers and this is where our final percentages put us,” Else said.

The public hearing for the adopted budget will be held on T uesday, May 10 at 7:30 p.m.

SARANAC LAKE — Artists, fashion, outdoors activities and more are being added to the lineup for the three-day Daffest.

The event, which takes place in Saranac Lake starting on Friday , April 29, and r unning through Sunday, May 1, will featur e plenty of activities for the family, including the soapbox derby race.

“The test r un for the derby was a complete success,” said Cherrie Sayles, event or ganizer.

“Two very talented 10-year -old racers took to the track, along with Bob Scheefer who hasn’t been in a race car since his North Hudson days in the mid to late 1960s.”

Sayles said that Scheefer tested the track three times in the yellow Car cuzzi Car Car e soapbox racer.

“It just didn’t have enough Zoom-Zoom to beat the fancy Pink Car crafted by the Saranac Lake Youth Center,” Sayles said.

“Now we know what to tweak and we’ll be ready for our field of 50 racers,” sponsor and event Chair Bob Bevilacqua of Car cuzzi Car Care said.

Local tourism officials pleased with increases

denpubs@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — The head of one of the regionʼs largest tourism organizations says recent gains in sales and occupancy tax revenues bode well for Essex County.

Jim McKenna is president and CEO of the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism and the Lake Placid Convention and Visitors Bureau. He said a report unveiled Monday by Essex County Treasurer Michael Diskin shows the region is recovering in certain economic areas.

McKenna says occupancy tax revenues are trending upward.

“If we look at just last year, weʼre running 8 percent of last year,” he said. “Last February was the only month we were off last year. If we look at the four year average, weʼre running about 5 percent above it at this point.”

Through April 13, occupancy tax revenues were up by 12 percent, McKenna says.

Increased snowfall may have played a big factor in the occupancy tax gains.

Jon Lundin is spokesman for the state Olympic Regional Development Agency. He said Whiteface Mountain was open for 138 days this year, registering 247 inches of natural snow.

McKenna predicts that this positive growth will continue through the summer.

“Weʼre projecting right now that with some new events this summer these projections will continue,” he said.

A spike in sales tax revenues is due in part to increased gas prices.

But McKenna says that doesnʼt necessarily mean visitors to the area – and local residents – arenʼt starting to spend more.

“The price of gas is something that has affected that as well,” Scozzafava said.

Diskin said that he agreed, but that other numbers showed a willingness to spend more in 2011 throughout the county.

“The mortgage tax r evenue has increased, but that probably could not be worse than it was,” Diskin said.

“Also, the increase in occupancy tax in the county is up about 12 per cent over last year ’s figur es. So, even though gas is up, people ar e coming to Essex County and staying mor e in 2011.”

Scott Sayward’s Egg-cellent Ukranian decorating project

keith@denpubs.com WILLSBORO — Every year, when people come for Easter dinner at Scott Saywar d's home, they don’t want to leave empty-handed.

“Everyone that comes for Easter expects to go home with an egg,” Sayward said.

But not just any egg. The eggs that Sayward has ar e Ukranian Easter Eggs, a technique of egg painting-artistry that was popularized in Poland, Russia and — of course — the Ukraine.

“I started in 1997, but I did not have all of the pr oper tools so I used melted crayons and hot nails,” Sayward said. “I soon found out it works much better with tools.”

Sayward said that, each year, he will decorate hundr eds of eggs using the Ukranian technique, which calls for a near -perfect

symmetry in the designs and patterns that are used to decorate the egg.

“That is the tough part because when you get started on an egg, you quickly r ealize that they ar e not perfect cir cles,” Saywar d said. “They ar e supposed to be geometrical and repeating patterns. I can spend several

hours on just one egg.”

Sayward said that he starts cr eating the eggs for the spring season each February.

“I get into it and I can’t stop — I just go and go and go,” Sayward said. “I enjoy the whole process because it is artistic and you have to sit down and be quiet and focus. It

is a good time to r elax and put everything out of your head.”

Sayward said that he has taught several people about Ukranian Egg decorating, and that he discover ed the pr ocess thr ough a newspaper article.

“I saw the pictur es with the article and thought, wow, those ar e so beautiful,” Sayward said. “I also thought that it looked like a challenging process. I walked into MJ Designs in Plattsburgh one day and they had a starter kit.”

Since, Sayward has decorated a variety of eggs, including an emu egg.

“That’s the biggest one I have done,” he said.

Overall, Sayward said that he will give out between 60-70 decorated eggs each year, while keeping some for his personal collection.

“I guess people must like them,” he said.

SL Village plan irks local chamber

SARANAC LAKE — The village of Saranac Lake intends to phase-out funding for a local business organization starting next year, but the plan is drawing criticism fr om the gr oup’s membership.

Meanwhile, trustees said they intend to follow through on a plan to eliminate double-taxation within the village budget.

The pr esident of the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors told trustees this week that the board should reconsider its decision to draw-down funding for the organization.

Speaking during the April 11 regular board meeting, Keith W ells said the chamber r epresents a worthwhile investment for the village.

“The chamber ’s staff and its boar d of dir ectors work diligently to leverage your investment far beyond the dollar amount that it r epresents,” he said. “We’re pleased and honor ed to represent nearly 400 businesses in our egion. r No where else in our village will one find the quantity and quality of services we provide for Saranac Lake.”

Currently, the village is cutting its contribution to the chamber fr om $15,000 to $10,000.

That contribution will be cut by another $5,000 next year and totally phased-out by the 20132014 fiscal year.

The chamber receives $20,000 from Harrietstown and $1,000 from North Elba. The town of St. Armand does not contribute to the organiza-

tion.

Wells said the boar d’s mission to eliminate double-taxation will not r esult in any significant cuts to village taxes.

“This seems to have been raised by the board as a ‘cause celebre’ to justify these hurtful cuts made to the various civic and volunteer organizations of our community,” he said. “These organizations, including the chamber, are responsible for providing a myriad of services and contribute greatly to our sense of community , our pride, and our quality of life.”

Wells told the boar d the chamber ’s Web site attracts more than a quarter-million visits annually, contributing to what he called “reasonable success,” for the business community despite a tough economy.

Mayor Clyde Rabideau praised the chamber and its membership for its contribution to the community. But he also said the chamber ’s claim that cutting out “double-taxation” amounts to little savings is false, noting that village’s across the state have few options when it comes to cutting their budgets.”

Trustee John McEneany said he was frustrated that the chamber acted surprised when the cuts were announced in this year’s budget.

“I’m a little mif fed, to be honest with you, over press conferences organized seven months after the chamber was told something, pretending like they never knew it was going to happen,” he said. “I guarantee you that there will be a motion coming forward from this board at the next meeting – that will never happen again.

News of the Week State of emergency in Black Brook BLACK BROOK — The government in Black Bro ok declared a state of emer gency April 12 after snowmelt flooded onto the r oads, leaving a number without shoulders and sections of pavement. The Ausable River was a foot over flood stage following a night of heavy rainfall and a day which saw temperatures pushed into the 70s.

Bonnieview, Forest Dale and Strackville roads endured the worst damage, but Guide Boar d, Union Falls, and Nelson roads were damaged as well.

Bonnieview Road, which had been closed by 1 p.m., was open again at 4 p.m. A proclamation of local state emer gency ur ged travelers to exer cise extreme caution within the town limits. Local officials have not yet estimated how much it will cost to fix the damage.

Fulbright position for PSU PLATTSBURGH — The pr esident of Plattsbur gh State University and the executive dir ector of the Canada-U.S. Fulbright Pr ogram r ecently signed an agreement, under which a noted scholar will take up residence at the university for two to six weeks each year. The visiting scholars will be expected to gives lectures and teach a one-cr edit course during their time at the school.

Fulbright Canada will accept applications and oversee the peer r eview and selection pr ocess. A minimum of five months before the beginning of the semester a scholar is scheduled to arrive, a r ecommended applicant list will be submitted to Plattsburgh State’s Center for the Study of Canada. Nominees will be selected from this list.

The agreement will remain in effect for three years after the first scholar in residence is scheduled to arrive in 2012.

Hannaford opens in Lake Placid LAKE PLACID — The Hannafor d supermarket chain opened a new store in Lake Placid on April 16.

The store’s Cold Br ook Plaza location, which is just down the street from Price Chopper, puts it in direct competition with the other regional grocery giant.

Both stor es ar e appr oximately 40,000 squar e feet.

Hannaford will include a butcher shop, produce and seafood sections, and a deli and bakery combined.

Hannaford will also include a pharmacy, something Price Chopper doesn’t have. The store will eventually employ 80 to 100 people, only 20 to 25 of whom will work full-time.

Radio consortium formed ELIZABETHTOWN — In the hopes of receiving an interoperable communications grant, a r egional radio consortium is being formed by Essex, Franklin, Clinton, Washington and Warren counties. As it currently stands, closed radio systems pr event police from speaking with fir efighters. However, separate agencies could communicate with each other with the help of V-Tac, a new countrywide set of VHF radio channels.

The desir ed grant comes fr om the state 91 1 surcharge fund and could awar d each county up to $2 million. Essex County is alre ady in the process of upgrading its public safety radio system at a cost of $10 million, and hopes to put the grant money toward offsetting this cost.

Rifkin: ‘I have nothing to do with’ victims

Papineau was asked by Newsday to interview Joel Rifkin, a convicted serial killer currently serving a life sentence at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora.)

DANNEMORA — Long Island serial killer Joel Rifkin said Thursday, April 14, none of the skeletal r emains found r ecently in the expanding Gilgo Beach mur der investigation were victims of his.

“I have nothing to do with those bodies,” he said matterof-factly during an interview at the maximum-security prison where he’s locked up for life.

Rifkin confessed to killing 17 women fr om the late 1980s into the early ‘90s. Four of the bodies were never found.

But Rifkin told Newsday that the South Shor e barrier island wher e the r emains of as many as 10 possible victims have turned up since December was not one of his dumping grounds. It is not yet known how long the most r ecently found remains had been there.

Rifkin, 52, spoke for more than an hour at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, N.Y., a remote village about 20 miles from the Canadian border.

His graying hair was combed back in a ponytail. He wears bifocals and sports a goatee. He doesn’t raise his voice when he speaks and, despite his crimes, he is unr estrained by handcuffs or chains when he meets guests at a visiting are a.

Rifkin has been following the Gilgo Beach case thr ough television news and has his own theory — at least egarding r the four women who worked as pr ostitutes whose r emains were the first to turn up in the br ush off Ocean Parkway in Suffolk County.

He thinks the culprit could be a local whose line of work would allow him to go unnoticed if he carries burlap bags, like the clam fishermen who fr equented the same South Shore ar ea wher e he went fishing with his dad during his childhood.

“My guess is it would be someone like a landscaper, contractor or a fisherman,” said Rifkin, who is serving the 15th year of a 203-year sentence for his killing spree.

He also said he believes the killings of the four pr ostitutes found along Gilgo Beach in December could be unrelated to the other remains found in recent weeks in Suffolk and Nassau counties. The four women went missing between 2007 and 2010.

Rifkin showed little emotion during the interview. But he paused when he said he now feels r emorse for his trail of death and terror. The former East Meadow re sident was convicted of nine of at least 17 murders of mostly drug-addicted prostitutes, some of whom he dismembered. He dumped their remains throughout Long Island, New York City and New Jersey.

Rifkin explained why he decided to target prostitutes.

He said he would have “no attachment” to the victims — meaning they could not be traced to him. This, he said, explains why the Gilgo Beach victims were chosen. As prostitutes, they wer e easy to entice. “That’s their job . . . to get into a stranger ’s car,” he said.

Suffolk police did not r espond specifically to questions about Rifkin, saying that “all avenues ar e being investigated.”

Experts said they did not see much investigative value in what Rifkin had to say.

ic killer’s mind, former FBI profiler Mary Ellen O’Toole said his musings are unreliable, if not entirely misleading.

Rifkin’s observations about the killer ’s pr ofession ar e “speculative,” she said, because anyone could have access to burlap bags.

Plus, she added, every killer is dif ferent: “He has his experience as a serial killer , but he doesn’t have the training and the expertise” to speak about a case.

One area where expert investigators think Rifkin is telling the truth is when he says that, after all these years, he still does not understand why he killed his victims.

In what experts said is typical for serial killers like Rifkin, he implied that he is now a changed man, who pr obably would not have committed the murders if he had been taking Paxil — an antidepr essant used to tr eat social phobias that he is now prescribed.

“It’s blame-it-on-anything with these guys,” said Steven Egger, a criminology professor at the University of Houston at Clear Lake who has interviewed several serial murd erers.

“Serial killers kill because they like it and it’s why they continue to do it, but they will continue to blame it on anything other than themselves.”

Victims’ advocates saw no value in anything Rifkin said.

“People like Joel Rifkin should be tossed away and never heard fr om again,” said Barbara Connelly , dir ector of the Long Island New York Par ents of Mur dered V ictims Outreach, a support group that meets in Roslyn. “We need to remember the victims and know that they wer e people who were loved and we need to keep their voices out there.”

A total of 19 students fr om the two schools took part in the 201 1 Ithaca College Gospel Choir Festival, held on April 9 at the Ithaca College School of Music.

County sheriff preps for Take Back Day

keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — The Essex County Sheriff ’s Department is partnering with eight sites throughout the county on Take Back Day. Take Back Day, which will be held on Satur day, April 30, will involve members of the Sheriff ’s Department working at specified sites thr oughout the county to take back old pr escriptions and dr ugs that have exceeded their expiration date.

“The way the program runs, we have to have a sworn law enforcement officer at each site to collect any of the medications that come in,” Sheriff Richard Cutting said. “ This is an opportunity to turn in all of your unwanted medications.

Simply bring them in and put them in the box — no questions asked. They will be disposed of in an appropriate manner.”

Bald Peak keeps name NEW RUSSIA — A Vermonter ’s request to change the name of Bald Peak to T wisted Cedar Peak was turned down April 14 by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names due to lack of support. Hiker John Pennucci, who made the request, did so because three other mountains bear the name Bald Peak in Essex County. The State Department of Environmental Conservation, the towns of Moriah, Elizabethtown, and the Essex County Board of Supervisors all opposed the change.

Saranac shooting victim improves SARANAC — Jamie Laporte, the victim of a r ecent shooting, was improving as of April 14. While still in a coma, he had been upgraded to serious condition, hospital workers said. State Police are continuing their investigation and do not yet know how he came to be injured April 10 at the home of Clark P. Ray. Ray was arrested the next day after a long stand-of f with police.

Fleeing drug-laden crash earns prison time PLATTSBURGH — Leonar d Knepp, 27, of Plattsburgh, was sentenced to five years in prison and an additional thr ee years pr obation for crashing his dr ugladen car and fleeing the scene. Marijuana, cocaine and crack cocaine wer e found in his vehicle. Knepp will serve his sentence at Downstate Correctional Facility.

Hunting camps allowed to stay RAY BROOK — Over two hundred hunting and fishing camps, owned by Heartwood Forestland Fund and scheduled for r emoval, were given permission to stay by the commissioners of the Adirondack Park Agency on April 15. APA commissioner Richard Booth, who cast the only dissenting vote in the 8-1 decision, said the issue should have been subject to public hearing.

Ice out on horizon B

esides chasing the wiley whitetail through the Adirondack wilds, few things get my ticker jumping like ice out on the backwoods ponds and that first feisty speckle coming to the net.

I hope to make that a reality this weekend, although fishable water may be as hard to find as an APA decision-maker who didn’t once hold a lofty board seat with some environmental group.

I remain positive there is hope for both, however.

In the meantime, I had the pleasant opportunity the other day to meet up with a couple other pond fishing junkies for a chat over lunch.

Nothing I like better than a good old-fashioned speckle trout discussion. Except, perhaps, chasing the wiley whitetail through the Adirondack wilds.

Oh, and that first feisty speckle coming to the net. I’m also quite fond of camouflage accents on a pickup truck, for that matter.

Sorry ... off topic again.

So, anyway, I met up with retired AuSable Valley educators Vic Pomerville and Mike Bush to talk fishing last week. Great folks and I wish them all the luck this trout season.

During the conversation, I mentioned the fact that my grandfather used to keep accurate track of ice out, as well as which ponds traditionally produced better early. He also kept track of what the fish were feeding on at different times of the year, and what lures, flies or bait was most productive — and where on the pond he caught fish.

My brother and I have done the same for the past 30 years.

That log has become an invaluable source as we decide which ponds to fish at certain times of the year.

Like many other brook trout fisherman, I pencil favorite ponds into certain dates on the calendar — depending on the time of year they’ve produced the best in the past — and it’s put more fish in the boat for me.

I spoke to a handful of DEC experts about this phenomenon, and received a wide range of theories about why some are better than others, especially in the early spring.

Tom Austin, director of Warren County’s fish hatchery and an avid brookie fisherman himself, believes its linked mostly to water temperature.

“The shallower ponds tend to warm a bit quicker, and ponds that have inlets or waterfalls where warmer water and sources of food flow in, stimulates fish activity,” Austin said.

Lakes and ponds with dark, stained water warm up quickest of all.

Ponds like Spectacle and Crab in Schroon and Grizzle Ocean and Rock in Ticonderoga fit this description.

Also important are the food sources present.

Nearly all brook trout ponds produce hatches of Caddisfly, Stonefly and Mayfly, for example — but each hatch at different intervals, once again depending on water temperature.

Knowing when different hatches are appearing and where can definitely help predict when a pond will be hot, Austin said.

Documenting it will help develop trends with certain ponds, and give you the best chance for success, always a plus after a three or four mile portage.

And since my day job interferes with my fishing agenda, I closely schedule each trip. I rarely hit the same pond twice in one year — unless I’m lost and walking in circles, that is.

Don’t worry, mom, that only happens half a dozen times or so a season.

The youth weekend allows junior hunters ages 12-15 to hunt with an adult mentor who is allowed to call but not carry a firearm. The bag limit is one bearded bird, which counts toward the youth’s regular season bag limit of two bearded birds. A second bird may be taken beginning May 1.

The regular spring season opens May 1 and continues until May 31. Shooting hours are from one half-hour before sunrise to noon and hunters with a valid turkey permit can take two bearded birds.

AuSable AD named tops in Section VII

keith@denpubs.com C L I N TO N V I L L E — A u S a b l e Va l l e y Athletic Dir ector Kurt Munson r ecently received some high praise from his peers in Section VII. Munson was named the Athletic Director of the Year in Chapter 7 by the New York State Athletic Administrators Association.

“It’s exciting, especially when your colleagues support you in this way ,” Munson said. “Several of them wer e at the awar ds dinner and our superintendent, Paul Savage, was there to present me with the award.”

Munson said that there is really no difference between Chapter and Section VII other than how each organization names them.

“The Chapter is made up of the CV AC a n d M VA C s c h o o l s , s o i t i s b a s i c a l l y a Section VII award,” he said.

Munson credited the work that the entire athletic department has done in the area of sportsmanship as part of the reason behind the award.

“I feel that we have done a lot with sportsmanship,” Munson said. “We have some new consolidated programs and we do a pr etty good job with our r elationship between the town commissions and our facilities to get mor e practices and activities in.”

Munson said that the awar d is also an acknowledgement of the work that is done not only in the athletic department offices, but on the fields and in the school as well.

“This r ecognizes all of the har d work that is put in by our coaches and supporters as well as the school boar d and administration,” Munson said. “It’s not just about myself.”

Softball Chazy 16, Schroon Lake 2 CHAZY — Emily Keable limited the Schroon Lake bats to two r uns (one earned) and four hits as the Eagles scored their first win of the season in the opener April 12.

Keable str uck out eight on the mound and wrapped out a pair of hits, driving in one.

Keable’s battery mate, catcher Emily LaPierre, also collected two hits at the plate, while Kirsten Doran hit a double and Astrid Kempainen hit a triple and drove in two runs.

Brianna Rotella also played a solid game in the field at first base for the Lady Eagles.

KEENE — The Lady Lions scor ed 10 runs in the thir d and fourth inning and held on for a season-opening victory against Keene April 13.

Kearstin Ashline had a double and a triple along with a pair of RBIs to pace the Lions offense, while Andrea Le Vien also hit a double and Kylie Cassavaugh hit a double. Le Vien worked all seven innings in earning the win on the mound.

Olivia Jaques hit a double for the Beavers, while Amanda Boyle collected two singles and Hannah McCabe and Emma Gothner each wrapped out one hit.

Boyle worked all seven innings in the loss.

The Beavers scored seven runs over the third and fourth innings, and then scored a run in the sixth in seventh but were unable to complete the rally.

Crown Point 28, Willsboro 4 KEENE — The Lady Panthers scor ed 19 runs in their final thre e at-bats to get past the Lady Warriors April 14.

The Warriors wer e held without a hit by Crown Point hurler Lindsay Brace, while Courtney Blanchard used a delayed steal of home plate to give the Warriors an early 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning.

Solid core key to ELCS baseball team

keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — The Elizabethtown-Lewis varsity baseball team does not have a senior on the r oster, but is full of players who ar e experienced in the game and as a team.

“Our attitude and enthusiasm for the game is great,” head coach Jim Ratlif f said.

“This gr oup lives for baseball. For years, this group would get together on their own and have pick-up games all summer long.”

Ratliff said that the team is still looking to gain experience thr ough the season, and that they hope to have fun doing so.

“We want our pitchers to gain experience and get better of fensively and defensively as the season goes on,” Ratlif f said. “Then, we want to turn all that into being competitive and winning.”

Red Storm lady lacrosse team looks to improve

SARANAC LAKE — Even without eight players lost to graduation, the Saranac Lake varsity girls lacr osse team is looking stay in the hunt for a league and Sectional title.

“Although we lost eight players to graduation, the younger players we have gained ar e exceptionally athletic and have shown a great ability to pick up the game,” head coach Amanda Zullo said.

“We have balanced athleticism, experience, ef fort and attitude. Our younger girls ar e hungry, eager to learn and able to grow from their mistakes. As a unit we possess a str ong desir e to finish str ong, improve skills and effort each day.”

Zullo said that ther e ar e key players scattered all over the field for the Lady Red Storm, including attackers Shannon Muldowney and Kylie Sapone, midfielders Elena Beideck and Jackie Dubee, defender Meg Tubridy and goalie Regan Kieffer.

“I am looking for continual gr owth from game to game,” Zullo said. “Having

a stronger team with skills and er solve at the end of the season. Each time on the field is an opportunity for gr owth and each opponent will help illustrate ar eas needed to impr ove to make it to finals during sectional playoffs.”

Junior bowlers win The Willsboro youth bowlers entered 12 teams in the New York State USBC Youth Association Tournament held in Ausable Forks on March 19. They were competing with many other teams from around northern New York. The Strikers from Willsboro placed first in Class C, and they advanced to the state finals, to be held in Syracuse on April 30.
