On March 8, the town of North Elba issued a resolution in support of the development on and around Mount Morris and the Big Tupper ski area.

Then, on March 10, the Harrietstown Town Board passed a resolution of its own.

his weekend there’s no excuse for anyone to have a dirty car or an empty stomach. In addition to clean cars and full stomachs, it’s my guess that a fair number of people around town will have some unaccustomed aches and pains by the time the weekend's over, too. Hopefully, none too severe, but older folks need to take care when stepping on the basketball court for the first time in a while.

Because it’s time for the 32nd annual Tom Tanneberger Memorial basketball tournament, in which WCS alums from all corners of the earth converge to relive their past glories and raise money for the excellent scholarship fund established in Tom’s memory. The games start Saturday, March 19 at 1 p.m. in the school gym, and continue into the evening, with the men’s championship slated to begin at 6:15. To register your team ahead, call Jeff or Carol Schwoebel at 962-8567 or go online at www.Tanneberger.org. This event is always a lot of fun and it’s for a great cause.

It’s also the venue for the Westport Volunteer Fire Company’s annual spaghetti dinner, which starts in the cafeteria at 5 p.m. The menu includes spaghetti with meat sauce, tossed salad, rolls, and dessert. Special thanks go to Brian Westover, a WCS alumni and former fire department member himself (now Peru Fire Chief), for his leadership in putting the dinner together and whipping up the tasty sauce.

Though I hate to miss it, you probably won’t see me at the spaghetti dinner, since I’ll be doing food prep for another great cause near and dear to my heart: Sunday’s “Sourdough Waffle and Frittata Extravaganza” at Dogwood Bread Company, to benefit the Wadhams Free Library. It’s a serious Sunday Brunch on March 20 from 10 to 1, including fruit salad and tempting desserts. Last year it was a hoot. A delicious hoot, if there is such a thing, and all in support of the library.

As for your vehicle, car washes continue this Saturday morning at the firehouse, from 9 to 1, as well as March 26 and April 2.

inally, I am reporting on one of the Christian Women of Keeseville’s dinners BEFORE it happens. Whoo hoo — what … it only took me three months? My apologies to all the dedicated souls who so graciously put this together. The next dinner will be Thursday, March 24 from four until 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall. The meal will be roast pork, potatoes, salad, rolls and dessert. Again, I wish to acknowledge and thank Henrietta Belair who chairs the monthly community supper and the rest of the volunteers and Christian Women of Keeseville. If you have any spare time, please attend this wonderful event and maybe help out as well for such a worthy cause.

In my commutes to and from work I have recently enjoyed encounters with deer and turkeys on the interstate and ducks, some daredevil chipmunks, and a gorgeous bald eagle on Route 9. Besides these, there are all the amazing and colorful birds in my own back-

yard as well as the cousin of the death-defying chipmunks and of course the invisible but very odorous skunk or two. All my life I have been an animal lover and always make time to visit zoos in any metropolitan areas that I visit, and while I have seen many exotic and wonderful animals, nothing is more breath taking than suddenly coming across a beautiful animal out in its own environment. If you haven’t done it recently I strongly encourage you to wander on foot or car around our region with your eyes open wide.

I don’t know about you but I am itching for spring and keep thinking about rushing things by doing some spring cleaning. With the tremendous amount of waste and damage to our environment please look carefully at things no longer used or desired and rather than throwing them out, maybe try donating them to agencies or people that can use them.

Just make sure the items really are reusable and you are not just passing the fun job of throwing out the trash to somebody else.

his Saturday night, the film society is showing yet another award-winning movie called “Waiting for Superman.” It’s at the Willsboro school and starts at 7:30 p.m.

Also on Saturday night, the Whallonsburg Grange is hosting a square dance with a live band. That all starts at 7 p.m.

The Planned Parenthood polar plunge is also happening Saturday. This is a benefit and starts at 11 a.m. at the boathouse of George Davis and Susan Bacot-Davis near the ferry dock. The craziness will occur at 11:30 when plungers plan to fling themselves into the lake, all for a good cause but likely to upset the many ducks who hang out there. Plungers, pledgers and onlookers are all welcome. A sumptuous and warming lunch will follow at the house.

I’ve been volunteering at the transportation museum in Plattsburgh, learning more about Lozier cars, the museum’s prize possessions. Before they built their first car, the Lozier company “adopted” a lot of ideas and techniques from their competi-

tors. They bought a wrecked Mercedes and took it apart, then incorporated a lot of what they found into their own car.

Roads in the early 1900s were rough and tires were unreliable, so flats were a common occurrence. My favorite Lozier feature is a small air compressor in the engine compartment, driven off the crankshaft and used for pumping up tires. There were no fuel pumps in the early days, so gasoline flowed to the engine by gravity, not a very satisfactory situation except on flat ground. Lozier solved the problem by pressurizing the fuel tank with engine exhaust.

Exhaust passed through a spark arrestor, with a valve releasing exhaust while maintaining pressure in the tank. The Loziers employed about 500, and sponsored a baseball team and brass band in Plattsburgh, but old Mr. Lozier lived in New York City, in an apartment in the Waldorf-Astoria. I assume it was pretty fancy, and if I could afford the Waldorf, I’d live there, too. Next week, Lozier goes racing and moves to Detroit.

e still do have a good amount of snow, but it is going down slowly.

The welcome sign is how the birds share their sweet song, predicting spring is coming. Seeing some activity at the old Mountain View Restaurant is encouraging; we look forward to see the plans develop. I am very aware that I need to do more exercise and for me that means walking; not able to do that outside right now so I am most grateful that the local school allows interested adults to come walk the long halls after school classes let out for the day. It is most impressive to view the children’s art work on the hall walls.

This art teacher brings out the best in the students hopeful she gets some feed back for doing such a great job.

Some of our locals took advantage of escaping the bad weather and visited relatives in Myrtle Beach this past week. My neighbor Joan Strong and her daughter Tammy Benway visited Jack and Judy Hams, and my two daughters Cindy Flanagan and Sheila Vanags visited Paula Calkins, reports that the weather was better than here but a little on the cooler side for Myrtle Beach. Reports are that many

AsRA receives awards ELIZABETHTOWN — The Ausable River Associations (AsRA) has received two awards that will fund trout and salmon habitat improvement projects. The project will identify and replace structures that act as barriers to the passage of fish and other aquatic organisms. AsRA will receive 46,910 from the Lake Champlain Basin Program and will work with The Adirondack Nature Conservancy and SUNY Plattsburgh to complete a fish passage study. AsRA will also receive $52,000 from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to replace culverts and deconstruct dams that act as barriers to fish migration.

The project will use field assessments and GIS mapping tools to identify and rank barriers to aquatic organisms, assess the overall connectivity of stream habitat in the Ausable Watershed, and prioritize structures for replacement. The collaborating groups will conduct a training workshop to present the results to Town and County highway superintendents, and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation.

It’s sad to think of all the lost time and opportunities wasted while they pretended to be conducting affairs of the state. We now realize that many were just out for a good time.

A good friend of mine, who is now retired in Colorado, recently told me a story about a high ranking New York state official who questioned why residents allowed the state to be controlled by three individuals. He and his fellow elected officials continued to be amazed at what they were allowed to “get away with” in AlDan Alexander bany.

Thoughts from I can’t help Behind the Pressline but wonder if we are willing to sacrifice some of our luxuries for future generations the way previous American generations did for our benefit?

I was reading recently some information regarding the nation’s efforts during World War II. Clearly, it was an all-out, shared national approach. Everybody did their part, including serious rationing of gasoline and food supplies that were saved from domestic consumption to aid the war effort for the troops. Things like rubber products, metal, glass, iron, and even women’s nylons stockings were recycled for the manufacturing machine. The Great Depression generation was saving money and purchasing war bonds. Americans went to work on the production lines — especially women who entered traditional male manufacturing jobs — turning out equipment, ships, See ALEXANDER, page 7

As of April 1, New York state will give its citizens the right to record open meetings with a variety of media.

As part of Sunshine Week — celeb r a t e d t h e t h i rd w e e k o f M a rc h (March 13-19, 2011) each year to rem i n d re s i d e n t s a b o u t t h e i r r i g h t s under the Open Government Laws — we are excited to have some actual news to report about those laws, r a t h e r t h a n s i m p l y h i t t i n g re a d e r s over the head with the same old line about “Your Right to Know.”

Yet, here we go again. It’s our duty t o re m i n d c i t i z e n s t h a t t h e y a re guaranteed certain rights under the Freedom of Information, Open Meetings and Personal Privacy Protection Laws. And there is a group under the New York State Department of State — the Committee on Open Government — responsible for overseeing t h o s e l a w s a n d a d v i s i n g re s i d e n t s about them. During his tenure, the C o m m i t t e e ’ s e x e c u t i v e d i re c t o r, Robert Freeman, has become a best friend to news organizations looking for freedom of information opini o n s , w h i c h a re l i s t e d o n t h e We b site: www.dos.state.ny.us/coog.

The Committee reminds us that in March 2010, state lawmakers passed l e g i s l a t i o n d u r i n g S u n s h i n e We e k amending the Open Meetings Law to allow people to photograph and record these meetings: “In s ho rt, the c o urts have deter mined that anyone may record open meetings, so long as use of a recording device is not disruptive or obtrusive. Those bodies will be statutorily required to allow meetings to be p h o t o g r a p h e d , b ro a d c a s t , We b c a s t or otherwise recorded and/or transmitted by audio or video means. The new provision also states that public bodies may adopt reasonable rules governing the use of cameras and recording devices during open meetings, in which case such rules must be written, conspicuously posted, and provided to those in attendance upon request.”

ing of public meetings. These suggested rules, which are available on the Web site, may be modified and adopted by public bodies. This law takes effect April 1.

His reason: most New Yorkers can’t make the meetings, and the technology exists, so let’s just do it. And while we feel it was an unreasonably expensive unfunded mandate for agencies, especially smaller ones l i k e t h e A d i ro n d a c k P a r k A g e n c y, t h o s e We b c a s t m e e t i n g s h a v e p ro v i d e d e x t r a o rd i n a r y a c c e s s t o o u r state government like never before.

For example, we can watch an APA m e e t i n g l i v e o n t h e A PA We b s i t e (www.apa.state.ny.us). The Agency doesn’t have to broadcast it live — so long as they broadcast it over the Internet within a reasonable amount of time after the meeting — but they show it live anyway, as a courtesy and a public service because not everyone from around the 6-millionacre Adirondack Park can make it to R a y B ro o k t o a t t e n d t h e m o n t h l y meetings. Many times, the meetings include time-sensitive decisions, and taxpayers can watch their government at work as the issues unf old. A n d if th ey can’ t watch live, they can log on to the APA Web site a n d s e e t h e p re re c o rd e d m e e t i n g s , bookmarked by agenda item.

Insert not accurate To the Valley News: In recent weeks Margaret Bartley has provided an insert to the Valley News which has been labeled as an Elizabethtown Town Board Meeting Summary. Each one has contained several inaccuracies or misrepresentations of what actually occurred. She notes the summary is based on her notes and that the actual minutes are available in the Town Hall. I need to correct her summary regarding the Town Board meeting on Feb. 15 and tell you what actually occurred under Planning and Zoning. The DVD of the meeting makes it clear.

The issue on the table was an application for a $40,000 “Smart Growth“ grant from the DEC towards community planning. If received the grant would probably require a $10,000 matching fund from the town which might be cash and/or in-kind service.

Margaret reported, “he felt that previous planning had not been followed nor was it useful,“ and “that spending money on planning was a waste of taxpayer money” and that I was opposed to the grant for those reasons. Neither is true regarding our local planning. I did, however, make similar comments regarding a study called “Hamlets 3” which occurred during 2010 and cost the taxpayers a quarter of a million dollars.

Hamlets 3 was the third study of its kind dating back to the 1980s and led to the Smart Growth grant.

Hamlets 3 concluded we should grow inside our community, not outside, and reuse historic structures. We should also extend our town park to the edge of Stewart’s by eliminating the town lane currently in place and plant more trees along Court St. since “pedestrians are reluctant to stroll along the street after working hours.” I couldn’t believe the taxpayers of New York state, who happen to be broke, paid $250,000 for this bit of wisdom and for the third time.

I opposed the Smart Growth grant because I believe our state must curb its spending and I viewed the Hamlets 3 as a colossal waste of money. I just didn’t have the heart to add another $40,000+ to the tab even if it would help update our existing town comprehensive plan.

Thoughts on ACR To the Valley News: Some thoughts on the ACR project and the pending adjudicatory hearing.

The activities of the last few years regarding the project call to mind that analogy of a heavy weight prize fight. Before the main event, both sides engage in a form of psychological warfare that attempts to enhance one’s reputation and goals and diminish the other guy’s.

You’ve all seen the pictures of the contestants staring and glaring in attempt to rattle their opponent.

These actions have been ongoing here as the project is pursued, through the various forms of media, letters to the editor, Facebook, Twitter, newspaper ads, whatever works. All parties have attempted to establish their positions. Sometimes extreme, sometimes rational, sometimes questionable, sometimes laughable.

In a prize fight, there is a winner and a loser and here ends my analogy. In the adjudicatory hearing there will not be an outright winner or loser. Through the process of presenting factual evidence subject to examination by other parties, the result can and should be a win all for all concerned, that is an improved project for the developer, the community, and the broader concerns of the Adirondack Park.

A process that will bring all parties closer to the ideal of a balance between economic and environmental concerns.

A balance that can only be achieved by the active, informed participation of all parties, resulting in a transcript that will be used by the ultimate decision makers, the Commissioners of the APA. No doubt this can be a frustrating process at times and the resulting transcript can be a challenging read, but the outcome is certainly worth the effort.

I’m betting on the outcome and not the outrage.

Despite the errors, setbacks and hardships, America was determined to overcome every obstacle that stood in their way. This became a national obsession and an all-consuming focus.

It is hard to imagine our people coming together in this fashion today. Perhaps the “greatest generation” was naïve, yet, from the stories I’ve been told by my parents and grandparents, there was a sense of happiness and satisfaction of accomplishment in the midst of all the sacrifices and loss of loved ones. The common goal and hardship forged a strong America capable of accomplishing anything.

The sacrifices by those who came before us were always done to lighten the load on future generations. Is the strong America our parents and grandparents handed over to our generations an America that we can feel equally confident about handing over to our children? Or have gotten so soft and so self-consumed that we simply won’t sacrifice our lifestyle for the

benefit of those who will come after us?

When best and brightest among us can’t work together in an adult fashion to solve the internal domestic issues of the day, one has to wonder if we aren’t better served right now getting young high schools kids from the Model UN program to address these issues and find the common ground solutions we’ve been unwilling to undertake.

These are strange times. The clock keeps ticking, the rhetoric keeps growing, and that once-strong sense of shared sacrifice seems a distant memory to the ever-dwindling number of Americans who lived through that era and sacrificed so much.

We have to be honest with ourselves.

Will the America we leave our children be a better America than our parents left to us, or have we squandered the great advantage we once enjoyed out of self indulgence and uncompromising political positions? I think the next few years will be pivotal in answering those questions.

While nearly all Americans would opt for the same goal, I wonder if we’ll allow the method by which we reach that goal become the unraveling of America.

tance allotment would allow them to live like a wealthy person in America. If offered, many would act on the opportunity given the greatly disadvantaged circumstance that they would be vacating. Finally, health care is another cost that we simply cannot afford anymore.

Why not send Americans out of the country for operations, rehabilitation or convalescence. Incentives could be provided to maintain personal health. For instance, a public health advertisement might read, “keep overeating and you could end up in Mexico.” These creative outsourcing solutions all have one thing in common, they cost less. Obviously, these outsourcing proposals are made in humor and jest and could never happen in America.

Or could they?

Recently, I called a business number and spoke with a man with an accent so powerful that I only understood about every third word, after about twenty minutes I figured out what he was saying, sort of.

Later, it occurred to me that he was probably from another country and that he probably was occupying a job that had been outsourced. Maybe outsourcing could resolve some of our larger cultural problems. After all, some of the best minds in America; our elected officials, our corporate leaders, economists and Wall Street barons have created an operational environment favorable to outsourcing.

Would our ruling elite create conditions favorable to outsourcing if it would hurt our country? No, of course not! Some Americans object to outsourcing, saying that it is just another example of corporate greed and avarice that has a choke hold on America.

These nattering nabobs of negativity insist that outsourcing allows American companies to exploit a vulnerable foreign workforce that has no protection from abuse and to exploit the lack of any meaningful environmental protections in these foreign locales.

What a bunch of whiners! Rather than whining and stamping our feet in a collective tantrum and tearfully whimpering that “it’s not fair,” we should instead embrace the endless possibility of outsourcing.

I offer the following as just a few outsourcing solutions to our cultural problems. As America continues to get older, the cost of maintaining so many elderly people will be crushing. We could start sending the elderly overseas where labor costs, housing and medications are a fraction of what they cost here.

Consider Bob, he collects a tiny pension, modest social security and has a tiny but shrinking savings. In order to meet his copays for life sustaining heart medications,

The medications that Bob needs are one tenth of the American cost. Because housing costs are so low, he lives in a three bedroom villa with around the clock personal aides. Probably beautiful young girls who wear those silky outfits that Barbara Eden wore on “I Dream of Jeanie”. Personal aides do his laundry, cook for him and walk with him on a daily basis to optimize his health. Bob is able to afford all that personal care because his aides work for one American dollar a day.

Currently, Corrections is a huge cost to taxpayers. Though Americans represent only 5% of the world’s population they imprison more that 25% of the world’s prisoners. Outsourcing prisoners could save a tremendous amount of money. Laws could be changed so that part of the sentence would include being sent to Mexico or a nearby South American country.

Again, the long legs of the American dollar in impoverished countries and a local workforce that would work for $.50 a day could reduce costs and probably reduce our crime rate dramatically in the process.

The ranks of poor Americans have grown dramatically in the last twenty years as the middle class has crumbled. Why not incentivize the poor, uninsured or unemployable to move to India or another poor Asian Rim country where a modest public assis-

Defender vote delayed by to lack of supers

ELIZABETHTOWN — While the vote to hire a third public defender eventually took place, supervisors were unable to get any motions off the floor one week before.

Only 11 supervisors were able to attend the March 8 regular county meeting, which had been rescheduled from a day previous due to the massive snowstorm.

Under county rules and regulations, 12 supervisors are required to motion a resolution not scheduled on the agenda to the floor to be voted on, a fact that was brought up when Moriah Supervisor Tom Scozzafava asked to move a resolution supporting the upcoming Sunshine Week for government transparency.

“We need 12,” North Elba supervisor Robert Politi said upon asking for the resolution to be moved to the floor. “Do we have 12?”

“We don’t have 12 people here,” Westport supervisor Dan Connell said. “ I don’t think you can get anything on the floor by our rules,” county attorney Daniel Manning said.

“Any former supervisors here,” joked Politi.

“I guess we can’t entertain any resolutions from the floor.”

On a motion from Scozzafava on whether or not they could amend the rules, county manager Daniel Palmer offered the following suggestions.

“Really the two options we have is you can recess this meeting to another day or you can call a special meeting at another time, that is really the two options that you have at this point for any resolutions from the floor,” Palmer said.

The supervisors then moved to recess the meeting until 9 a.m. on March 14.

“We don’t need 12 to recess it then, right,” asked Scozzafava.

Pat Ward Memorial Tourney set for 20th year

keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — For the 20th time, former high school basketball players from throughout the region will come together in Elizabethtown for a day of hoops and fundraising.

The 20th annual Pat Ward Memorial Tournament will take place starting at noon on Saturday, March 29 in the Elizabethtown-Lewis gymnasium.

The event helps raise funds for the Pat Ward Memorial Fund.

“It is a $250 award to a male and female athlete,” Michael “Ike” Tyler, who organizes the annual event, said. “We give out four each year and some years we have given out eight. It is given to a member of the soccer teams, because that is what Pat excelled at.”

The games begin at 12:15 p.m. with the Westport versus Elizabethtown Team 1 women’s game, followed by the Schroon Lake against Westport men’s game at 1:15 p.m.; the Willsboro against Elizabethtown Team 2 women’s game at 2:15 p.m.; the Willsboro against Elizabethtown men’s game at 3:15 p.m.; the old timer’s game at

With teachers’ contract extended, Willsboro waits on state Board wants to see where state is in budget process

keith@denpubs.com WILLSBORO — Between now and April 12, there is a lot that can happen.

That is why the Willsboro Central School administration is taking a wait-and-see approach when it comes to the budget process.

“I gave the school board an outline of where we are and what the budget contains so far,” school superintendent Stephen Broadwell said.

“We are really waiting to see if the state passes the budget on April 1.”

Broadwell said that he is hopeful that the state will have a more firm direction by the time the school board reaches the deadline to adopt a school budget of April 12.

“We are really on hold until we see what the state is going to do,” Broadwell said.

In the meantime, Broadwell said that he was pleased that the district and the Willsboro Teachers’ Association had reached an agreement on a contract extension.

“The extension is a direct rollover contract without any additional raises and includes freezes in all stipends including coaching and

The new agreement is a zero percent salary increase, other than mandated step increments (via the Triborough amendment) for the upcoming school year.

“The district is very pleased with the negotiated and ratified contract with the WTA for the 2011-12 year,” Broadwell said. “The Teachers’ Association is aware and sympathetic to the current economic climate that everyone is facing.”

While the contract extension has been approved, Broadwell said that it may not guarantee that there are no cuts in instructional staff.

“Right now, like every other school, we are looking at everything,” Broadwell said.

Who-done-it at the grange WHALLONSBURG — The audience will be the final judge of what is true and what is fabrication in Mrs. Farnsworth, A.R. Gurney’s comedic gem which premiered in April 2004 and will take center stage at 7:30 p.m. on March 25 and 26 at The Grange, 1610 NYS Route 22, Whallonsburg, New York.

Set in a creative-writing class in Manhattan, this witty play centers around three main characters: a sardonic, harried teacher named Gordon, and two members of the upper crust from New Canaan, Connecticut, who collide in verbal battles of ideals punctuated with questions and answers from the writing class students.

Kathleen Recchia of Jay, George Davis of Essex, and Kevin Cooper of Westport will be reprising their roles from the production that toured the North Country this past fall.

Ms. Recchia will again take on the title role as Mrs. Margary Farnsworth, who wants to learn to write because she has a story that urgently needs to be told: the tale of a Vassar girl who becomes pregnant by a hard-partying Yale boy. Her narrative starts

to sound like a memoir in which only the names have been changed.

George Davis will be back as Gordon Bell, the preoccupied teacher who becomes intrigued with Mrs. Farnsworth and her memoir when he realizes that, if published, it could influence the outcome of the 2004 presidential election.

Kevin Cooper returns as “the husband,” Mr. Farnsworth, who offers students a different perspective of his wife and the situation at hand.

New to this production are Emily Abruzzi, Martin Deslauriers and Athena Pepe.

Fallout from massive snowstorm, regional flooding continues Douglas: ‘several’ families still in need in Jay

keith@denpubs.com Au SABLE FORKS — The blizzard and subsequent flooding of last week may be history, but for many, it will not be forgotten.

Jay supervisor Randy Douglas said that the town, county and state are still working with several families in the area who lost homes and possessions as a result of the flooding on the Au Sable River.

“There are about eight families that are still in need of help,” Douglas said. “They had hot water heaters, fuel tanks and belongings that were all destroyed because of the flooding.”

Douglas said that the town had worked with Essex County, where he chairs the board of supervisors, to assess what has needed and still needs to be done.

“We have been compiling a list to see what

is needed,” Douglas said. “We had a special informational meeting for those affected March 15 and also had a cleanup day with help from the inmates at Moriah Shock.”

Douglas said that Essex County was the only one to declare a state of emergency during the storm, which will make it more difficult to get state or federal disaster relief funding.

“Alan Hipps (Housing Assistance Program of Essex County director) is trying to see if we can re-direct some of the money that we have obtained for renovations to the relief effort,” Douglas said. “Our town and the county disaster preparedness teams worked so well together.”

Douglas said that while the majority of the ice is now out of the Au Sable, the danger for more flooding still remains.

“We’re keeping our eyes on the weather forecast,” he said. “There’s a couple of smaller jams still on the river, but what we are more concerned abut is melting and rain combined.”

State to spend less on tourism, will restore matching program

denpubs@denpubs.com ALBANY — State to spend less on tourism, will restore matching program Tourism officials were in Albany last week to urge legislators to maintain current funding levels for tourism marketing.

Some 200 people representing tourist organizations from across New York met with lawmakers last Tuesday, angling to keep about $7.4 million in tourism marketing funds in the budget for 2011-2012.

Officials told legislators that effective tourism marketing and promotion helps the state’s economy by bringing in more visitors.

The Tourism Industry Coalition of New York State says visitors spent nearly $46 billion in New York in 2009, translating to approximately $7 billion in state and local taxes.

“The I Love New York program, like other state agencies, saw a 10 percent decline in its funding, which brings it down to about $3.6 million,” said Jim McKenna, president and CEO of the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism and the Lake Placid Convention and Visitors Bureau.

But despite that spending reduction, McKenna says there is reason for tourism groups to be optimistic about the upcoming fiscal year.

According to McKenna, the state is maintaining current funding levels for a program that provides aid to localities — the I Love New York Matching Funds program.

That program will be funded to the tune of $3.8 million.

“That money is for organizations like our, who have to match the funding in order to access it, and then it has to follow strict guidelines for marketing purposes,” he said.

State Sen. Betty Little said the matching pro-

gram has been a huge success in the Adirondacks, noting that local groups like ROOST have used those funds effectively over the years.

McKenna noted that former Gov. David Paterson pulled funding for the matching program last year.

“But it looks like Gov. Andrew Cuomo is seeing the value of that program,” he said. “Because it is a matching program and it is now on the table again. In fact, we’re looking at about $68,000 for our organization that we will match for specific Essex County marketing programs.

We’re pretty psyched about that.”

Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy has since confirmed that matching funds will be included in the budget for 2011-2012.

Sen. Little noted that maintaining funding for tourism marketing benefits New York state.

“I think that tourism is something we need to invest in,” she said. “It does a lot for our economy and we’re dependent upon it in many ways. As tough as things are and as much as we’re making cutbacks, you need to continue working to create jobs and business and improve our economy — that’s something that tourism does.”

Senator Little hopes the state will be able to reopen the Gateway Welcome Information Centers in Beekmantown and Binghamton.

Both facilities were closed late last year as a result of the state’s ongoing fiscal crisis.

“It’s all about first impressions, and when you’re driving into the Adirondacks and see that a welcome center is closed — well, that is not a good first impression,” Little said.

McKenna agreed, noting that the Beekmantown welcome center serves as a gateway to travelers from Canada.

MHA lecture series set to begin WESTPORT — The Mental Health Association in Essex County is pleased to announce the first of a series of lectures concerning physical and mental health issues. The presentation on March 22 in Westport will be about Concussions and Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and will be held at the Mental Health Association‘s Westport site. The 60-minute lecture will be given by Dr. Pasqualino (Lino) Caputo, MD of the Westport Health Center. Dr. Caputo is a Board Certified Specialist in Sports Medicine

and Family Medicine. His expertise on this topic is a great asset to the community and all interested parties are encouraged to attend.

This overview is open to the public. A brown bag lunch is available for purchase of $2 or participants can bring their own. Dessert and coffee will be free. This event is the beginning of a series of lunch time speakers that will be open to the public. The lecture is being hosted by the Mental Health Association at 6096 Rt 9N in Westport.

The event will start at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday March 22.

The stability balls have no backing, requiring the children to keep proper posture throughout the day.

“It has definitely helped with the posture of the students,” Bedore said.

“They have to keep both feet on the floor. Posture is a big thing with young students these days and I have seen a difference since we started using the stability balls. It’s great to have an opportunity to do something like this.”

The balls are part of a pilot program that Bedore and her class are participating in, replacing their chairs with an inflatable ball that looks like the ones used for exercise.

Instead of doing the driving himself, Stewart left it to 2010 Olympic four-man bobsled gold medalist Steve Holcomb, and his teammate, Curt Tomasevicz, on the brakes. Through three races this season, Stewart, who drives the #14 Mobil/Office Depot Chevrolet, is tied with Kurt Busch for the Sprint Cup Series lead, with 113 points apiece.

Stewart won the series crown in 2002 and has 39 career NASCAR victories. Stewart made it down the Mt. Van Hoevenberg Olympic Sports Complex track with U.S. bobsled driver Steve Holcomb and his teammate, Curt Tomasevicz.

Pendragon looks through ‘Private Eyes’ SARANAC LAKE — The Pendragon Theatre is looking for the truth from “Private Eyes.”

“Private Eyes” is theater’s latest offering, a backstage comedy about love, deception and passion, written by prolific American playwright Steven Dietz.

The multi-layered play constantly blurs the line between illusion and reality. The audience is deceived along with the characters, and is left wondering where rehearsal (art) ends and real life begins.

Private Eyes received its world premiere at the Arizona Theatre Company in 1996 and gained broad recognition when it was produced as part of the Humana Festival of New American Plays at the Actors Theatre of Louisville in1997. Though the play never made it to Broadway, it is the most commercially successful of Dietz’s plays.

Pendragon’s production is directed by Ann Marie Gardinier Halstead, an assistant professor in the Performance and Communication Arts Department at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. Previously at Pendragon Gardinier Halstead performed in the suitor’s ward and Welcome Home, Jenny Sutter, and directed a staged reading of The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later. She also has an ongoing guest artist stint at The Firehouse Theatre Project in Richmond, Virginia. The cast includes St. Lawrence University student Sara Cushing as well as Pendragon company members Chris Mc Govern, Donna Moschek, Tyler Nye, and Brandon Patterson.

LAKE PLACID — Eastern Mountain Sports has asked the Lake Placid Village Board of Trustees for permission to use Mid’s Park on Memorial Day Weekend to celebrate the opening of its revamped store location on Main Street.

The sporting goods retailer borders Mid’s Park, an open village-owned lot that is used for a variety of community events.

EMS hopes to use the space to display camping equipment and other products sold in the store. The retailer plans to include displays from its venders and host live music.

In the past, the village has discouraged all commercial use of Mid’s Park. Village trustees agreed on Monday not to break that precedent by allowing sales or other direct retail activity

Local students get a taste of British life through college program

keith@denpubs.com LONDON — A pair of St. Lawrence University juniors with local ties are getting a firsthand look at British culture.

Brooke Hartson of Keene Valley (Keene) and Chauntel Gillilland of Willsboro (Westport) are both attending a semester abroad in England as part of the St. Lawrence University International Study Program for the spring 2011 semester.

Gillilland, a government major, said that she had been looking forward to this semester since her first on campus.

“St. Lawrence really encourages all of its students to study abroad,” Gillilland said. “I always knew I wanted to study overseas, and St. Lawrence’s variety of programs was one of the reasons I decided to go there. I was planning on going abroad since freshman year.”

“By the time I was in high school I knew I wanted to study abroad,” Hartson, a psychology major, said. “I became really interested in English history, especially the Renaissance era and set my mind on studying in England. When I was looking at colleges I looked for ones with study abroad programs in England. In short, I came to St. Lawrence knowing I wanted to study abroad.”

Hartson added that her high school experience also played a roll in wanting to study in another country.

“I think one of the biggest influences for me on this decision was the exchange program my high school, Keene Central, has,” she said. “Every year for one day we have several of the local exchange students come to Keene and talk to the elementary classes. At the end of the day, there would be an assembly and each student would make a presentation about their country to the school. I really enjoyed learning about different places all

over the world and I knew I wanted to go see some of these places and experience new cultures.”

Gillilland said that the chance to study in England has helped with her major.

“I’m a government major, and SLU’s London program is perfect for that field of study,” Gillilland said. “Not only is it a capital city and the center of the UK government, it is also the origin of the parliamentary system and pro-

vided inspiration for the US federal system.

The UK government is also very transparent, so you really get to see the system in action.

“I’ve already been to Parliament for debates, the Royal Courts of Justice for the 7/7 bombing inquest, and City Hall for Mayor ’s question time,” she continued. “They have a very different political consciousness — it really adds to my perspective on American government structures, from local to national.”

Hartson said that she has been able to concentrate on classes dealing with her minor, which is in performance and communication arts.

“London has a strong theater course,” Hartson said. “This course is different than any other theater course I’ve taken at St. Lawrence because I am able to see at least one play a week. It’s really amazing to see professional productions on a weekly basis.

I love this course because it’s given me a chance to see and discuss plays I would not have gotten the chance to see at St. Lawrence.”

Hartson said that one of the challenges of studying abroad was to learn about new culture as well as life in a much, much bigger town.

“I think the two biggest surprises I have encountered so far during my study abroad experience have been the differences See STUDY, page 23

ESG celebrates, looks forward Games could branch out to more X-sports, paralympic events

keith@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — As soon as the curtain closed on a successful joint effort to keep the Winter Empire State Games alive, organizers were already talking about plans for the coming year and expansion.

“We are going to continue the commitment that we had to these games for a long time to come,” Jim McKenna, Convention and Visitors Bureau president, said. “We are on the road for next year, and we hope to double our fundraising and expand the games.”

McKenna said that he was pleased to see the response in three areas.

“The way that we were able to turn this around in a matter of hours and said that we can make this work was one of the most impressive things to me,” Jim McKenna said. “What was also great was the reaction of the youth athletes who were just thankful that they were able to be a part of something that they had been looking forward to. The third was the coalition that we were able to pull together. It was great to see the partners that recognized the value of youth sport and the games and reached out to help.”

McKenna said that in the coming year, he

hopes that the group will be able to pull in more sponsors from more areas throughout the state and beyond, along with adding events to the games.

“I think that we need to take an example from the X-Games and get more of those future sports involved,” McKenna said. “I also see a definite place for adaptive sports like skiing and sledge hockey being a part of the games.”

McKenna said that he hopes to add venues from throughout the Adirondacks in order to help with the expansion.

“Using facilities in Saranac Lake and other places throughout the region would really make the games an Adirondack event,” he said. “Our goal is to make this a premier multi-sport event for the entire region.”

To show their commitment to regionalizing the games, McKenna announced that the new name of the games would be the Empire State Games Adirondacks, USA. “It has become a very successful regional event,” Jeff Byrne, ORDA senior vice president.

“We are excited about the prospects of how we can make these games bigger, better and more diverse.”

“I really think that the regional approach has been fantastic,” Randy Preston, Wilmington supervisor, said.

“I think that these games are the feel-good story of the winter,” Kim Reilly of the Visitors Bureau. “This is a statewide story of saving something that a lot of athletes look forward to.”

Lake Placid to spend $20,000

denpubs@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — The village of Lake Placid will spend $20,000 to design a stormwater management plan for Mirror Lake.

Work will focus on the east shore, where stormwater runs directly into the lake.

The more intensively developed west shore, which includes Main Street, already has a stormwater management system that filters out sand, oil, cigarette butts and other debris before drainage enters the lake.

The Lake Champlain Basin Program has given the village a $10,000 matching grant to improve water quality in Mirror Lake, a water body that is part of the Lake Champlain watershed.

The village agreed recently to pull $10,000 from its contingency fund to match the grant.

Mayor Craig Randall said the improvements in water quality are especially important for protecting aquatic life. The spring fed lake is well-known among local anglers for its excellent lake trout fishery.

TUPPER LAKE — For the first time in three decades, the town of Tupper Lake is looking for a new secretary.

Town officials announced on Monday that Administrator Sandra Strader has retired.

The board thanked Strader for her years of dedication.

Roger Amell is supervisor of the town of Tupper Lake.

denpubs@denpubs.com TUPPER LAKE — The state Adirondack Park Agency last week outlined conditions it might include in an approval of the Adirondack Club & Resort in Tupper Lake.

The resort developer, environmental groups, and members of the public are preparing to debate what conditions are kept, changed or eliminated during the public hearings that began March 16.

Conditions include a provision that would invalidate the resort’s permit in five years if certain criteria weren’t met.

One requirement is that the proposed ski lodge is completed and that one of the chairlifts is replaced. A certain number of lots would also need to be sold and several roads would have to be improved or constructed.

Other conditions deal with monitoring effected wetlands and the disposal of wastewater.

while he would like to see some fine-tuning, he is assured that the conditions will address concerns over the environment and the local economy.

The large-scale resort planned for the Big Tupper ski area has drawn sharp criticism from environmental organizations taking part in the hearings.

But one group said the APA process might be on the right track.

“The conditions are a good start and set the right tone for what the APA is expecting,” said Adirondack Council spokesman John Sheehan.

The council does hope a few other concerns are addressed before a final permit is granted, including water quality, forest health and the overall project design.

Sheehan said the resort should adhere to an effective conservation design that builds from the center of the ski area and grows outward as more space is needed.

This would prevent unnecessary sprawl, something Sheehan said is expensive for everybody.

North Elba backs ACR project

denpubs@denpubs.com NORTH ELBA — Officials from the town of North Elba voted unanimously March 8 to pass a resolution backing the Adirondack Club & Resort project in Tupper Lake.

Town councilmembers called the resolution a vote in support of economic development in the Adirondacks.

Officials expressed their interest in seeing Tupper Lake reach its potential as a ski resort destination.

Supervisor Roby Politi said he sees a “tremendous need for growth and development in that area,” adding that he supports the development “100 percent.”

The Adirondack Park Local Government Review Board has voiced support of the development plans on Mount Morris, including expansion of the ski area, the construction of resort buildings and the sale of about 650 building lots scattered over several thousand acres.

The ACR proposal is the largest of its kind ever to go before the state Adirondack Park Agency and, after several years fraught with delay and setbacks, hearings before the APA are set to begin this month.

These groups say their plan is better for the environment and the local economy. Not only does a smaller resort help preserve the wild character of the area, they argue, but it also makes more business sense given today’s economic realities.

With the project nearing the first of a series of APA hearings, public debate over the resort proposal has intensified in the local media.

The environmental group Protect the Adirondacks called the development a “highly speculative scheme perpetrated on the people of Tupper Lake as well as the state of New York.

“The country is not yet out of a recession caused by these real estate scams,” they said.

Lead developer Michael Foxman shot back, responding to his critics stating that “from what I have observed, the preservationists usually say the opposite of what they mean.”

“They are not afraid the Adirondack Club & Resort will fail,” Foxman said. “They are afraid it will succeed.”

“The undersigned, which would be all five trustees, encourages the special interest groups like the Adirondack Council and Protect the Adirondacks and other parties to the hearing, to stop the various stall tactics and discovery motions filings, allowing the adjudicatory hearing to move quickly and allow the regulatory agencies to reach final permit approval in a timely manner,” Rabideau said.

I was probably most surprised by the littlest things, like not being able to find items in the grocery store. The tiniest things were the biggest shock, it sounds strange, but silly things like not being able to find the right shampoo were troubling.”

Hartson added she was worried about learning how to get around in a big city.

“I caught on really quickly,” she said. “It took maybe two days tops to figure out the ‘tube system’ and the buses. I now feel very confident exploring London on my own, it’s so nice to get around easily and not worry. I really surprised myself when I got assimilated to city living so quickly.”

Gillilland said that she wants to make sure that she is a strong example of Americans while in England.

“It’s scary, sometimes,” Gillilland said about interacting with others. “There’s this huge fear of stepping on toes. But the British are universally courteous, and they can be pretty interested in your perspective on things as an American. We’re studying here, but I’ve learned the most from living here as a foreigner. I’ve never had to think about what it means to ‘be American,’ but over here that’s your strongest single identifier. You have to consciously decide whether you’re going to reinforce the stereotype or break away from it.”

Both Gillilland and Hartson said that this has been their first real chance to experience a culture other than their own.

“I’ve been to Mexico and few times, and my parents dragged me off to China when I was very small,” Gillilland said about her previous trips abroad.

“Besides my senior class trip to Mexico, I haven’t done any international travel before,” Hartson said. “In fact, I have never traveled without family members before so this was a my first big trip and I had to do it without them, it was very unnerving.”

Both students added that they have been changed due to their current semester in Europe.

“I feel like I’ve opened my eyes for the first time,” Gillilland said. “I have learned more in this semester than ever before in high school or college, about academic subjects and about myself.”

“The only way I can describe this experience is life changing,” Hartson said. “I can’t even begin to describe how much I’ve learned here, about the world around me and perhaps more importantly about myself. I know I will always look back and cherish my timer in London.”

Martens confirmed as DEC head ALBANY — A man with strong ties to the Olympic region was confirmed as the commissioner of the state Department of Environmental Conservation last week.

The Republican controlled state Senate unanimously confirmed Joe Martens Tuesday, who was nominated by Gov. Andrew Cuomo to take the helm at the DEC earlier this year.

Martens has served as president of the Open Space Institute and chairman of the state Olympic Regional Development Authority’s Board of Directors — he’s been working as acting commissioner since January.

Officials from across the North Country have lauded Cuomo for selecting Martens as DEC commissioner. Leaders like state Senator Betty Little and Assemblywomen Teresa Sayward and Janet Duprey say Martens understands the issues facing the Adirondack Park.

State seeks lawsuit dismissal LAKE PLACID — The state of New York is seeking dismissal of a lawsuit which claims current environmental laws and regulations in the Adirondack Park violate the Americans with Disabilities Act. The lawsuit, filed last summer, challenges state Environmental Conservation Law and Executive Law which bans floatplane and

motorized access to certain wilderness areas inside the Blue Line.

The state plans to file a motion to have the lawsuit dismissed. That action comes after the plaintiffs proposed an amendment to the original lawsuit early last month.

In June 2009, Maynard Baker of Warrensburg announced he would sue the state Department of Environmental Conservation and the Adirondack Park Agency for allegedly violating laws designed to protect disabled persons by assuring them access to parks and wilderness areas.

Lake Placid attorney Matt Norfolk is representing Baker in the case.

Norfolk said the lawsuit does not specifically challenge the Lows Lake decision – rather, he says the suit is about “basic civil rights.”

The lawsuit remained dormant up until Feb. 4 — that’s when Norfolk filed an amendment on behalf of the five plaintiffs.

“Looking at the complaint after I filed it, I had some concerns that I should have attacked the very statutes that created these rules and regulations,” Norfolk said. “The statutes allow the state to put these rules in place, and while we take issue with how they are administered and enforced, we also need to take issue with the actual statute.”

Nova Bus gets new MTA contract

PLATTSBURGH — MTA New York City Transit has placed an order for a test fleet of 90 buses to be assembled in Nova Bus’ Banker Road facility.

The contract requires Nova Bus to provide the 40-foot Nova LFS vehicles in three different configurations, to assess the various transmission and cooling technologies available.

The buses are to be assembled and delivered during the first half of 2011.

Jailed man found with drugs PLATTSBURGH — Joseph Bushey III, 31, was reportedly found to have been in possession of drugs while an inmate at Clinton County Jail.

According to the Clinton County Sheriff's Department, deputies found more than one dozen pills, tobacco, marijuana and matches on Bushey during a search March 12.

Bushey was awaiting transfer to state prison after an unrelated conviction on drug charges.

An investigation is being conducted into how Bushey came into possession of the contraband.

Suspicious odors result in building closure PLATTSBURGH — The Myers Fine Arts Building on the State University of New York at Plattsburgh campus was closed March 14 after a report of fumes emitting from the building.

The building was closed after an employee reportedly smelled what he thought were ammonia fumes. It was determined the cause of the smell may have come from an insulation system for the building's hot-water lines.

The building was expected to remain closed until repairs could be made.

McSweeney pleads not guilty to manslaughter PLATTSBURGH — Jesse McSweeney, 26, Mooers, has pleaded not guilty on charges in connection with the death of 24year-old Jeremiah Dalton, also of Mooers.

McSweeney, who entered the plea in Clinton County Court March 11, was recently indicted on charges of driving while ability impaired, aggravated driving while intoxicated, DWI, third-degree assault, and speed not reasonable and prudent.

The charges stem from an Oct. 10 crash in which authorities believe McSweeney was driving drunk after leaving a local bar.

McSweeney is scheduled to reappear in court May 18. If convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison.

Fire consumes Kasey Drive home MOOERS FORKS — The home of Greg and Melissa LaValley, 24 Kasey Drive, was destroyed by fire March 8.

The blaze broke out at approximately 5:30 p.m. with firefighters from the Mooers, Champlain, Altona, Ellenburg Depot and Hemmingford, Quebec, fire departments responding.

The couple’s garage was also destroyed, resulting in the death of two dogs. No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Chazy Lake home destroyed CHAZY LAKE — The State Route 374 home of Wade Pecor and Carrie Dubray was lost to fire March 9.

Firefighters from the Dannemora, Cadyville, Saranac, Ellenburg Depot, Ellenburg Center, Lyon Mountain, and Altona fire departments responded to the blaze. Despite a quick response, the two-story house was unable to be saved. The property was reportedly not insured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Dragway Day being planned in North Hudson

fred@denpubs.com NORTH HUDSON — Plans are now being formulated for the fourth annual North Hudson Classic Car Cruise In and Dragway Day May 7.

Activities will begin at 9 a.m. and continue through mid afternoon. Cars will be on display at the North Hudson fire house and town office parking area, 3034 US Route 9, North Hudson.

The event started in 2008 as a reunion of participants and attendees at the North Hudson Dragway, which op-

erated for several years until the late 1960s. Drivers brought their cars to show and many people brought pictures of the race days as well as DVDs and cassettes to watch. The day was enjoyed by all and there were many requests to have future events.

The 2009 event saw even higher attendance and classic cars were included. Live music was provided and refreshments donated by local food establishments were provided.

The 2010 event continued that theme with more cars on display.

That format will continue this year.

There will be no entrance fees nor will any trophies be given. Memorabilia of the dragway is encouraged as people are still interested in the history and lore of the drag strip days. Anyone who has mementos from the Dragway days or a classic car to display is encouraged to participate.

County approves hiring of third public defender

keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — Everyone said that it was not an easy decision.

But in the end, the choice to add a third full-time lawyer to the Essex County Public Defender ’s Office outweighed the concerns over adding a position during rough budget times.

“I don’t think that anyone here is thrilled about adding a position to the payroll,” Elizabethtown supervisor Noel Merrihew said during the March 14 continuation of the March 8 county board meeting. “But I think that this is the best way to cover the added case load that is going through the office and we will not be held in the grey area of assigned council.”

“The case load, whether or not they have been dragging cases out, shows that there is a need for another person,” Moriah supervisor Tom Scozzafava said. “The proof is there, all you have to do is the research.”

“I don’t think that this is a popular choice, but to ignore this is wrong and it would come back to bite us,” Wilmington supervisor Randy Preston said.

Two members of the board said that while they might agree with the majority (11 supervisors out of 14 in attendance voted for the resolution), they said that now was not the time to add a position.

“I can’t support this at this time,” Westport supervisor Dan Connell said. “I wish that this was coming after we knew what the state budget was going to contain for sure and then we would have a better idea of what we had for

funding.”

“If I had the time to look at a final state budget and see where this fit in, then I could see myself supporting it,” Lewis supervisor David Blades said. “But I can’t now.”

Willsboro supervisor Ed Hatch said that a new full-time position was not needed with or without a state budget.

“The town justices that I have talked to said that there has not been a big increase in their case loads, but there has been a shift in the types of cases they are dealing with,” Hatch said. “I think that Essex County has to take a serious look at part-time help, because for every dollar that we spend in salary, we spend 50 cents more in benefits.”

Hatch said that the justices he had talked with agreed that the public defender office has been a help to the county judicial system.

“They feel that while the office does need help, another person in the office may not be the answer,” Hatch said.

Keene supervisor William Ferebee asked Hatch how many justices he had talked to in the county, to which Hatch responded three.

“I don’t know how you can have a feeling for the entire county by just talking to three,” Ferebee said. “That’s not a majority.”

Hatch also asked county manager Daniel Palmer if he supported the recommendation to add the position.

“I have a responsibility in this position and I have to do what I feel is right,” Palmer said. “Oh, yes, I support this.”

“Okay,” Hatch replied. “So when you are up there later this year saying that we have to cut, cut, cut, I will remember this.”

CHAMPLAIN — World Warehouse and Distribution is under new ownership.

NFI, a privately owned nationwide integrated supply chain solutions provider, has acquired the third-party l o g i s t i c s a n d w a re h o u s e c o m p a n y h e a d q u a r t e re d i n Champlain. The acquisition marks the 10th of its kind

by NFI in the last 10 years.

The deal will result in World Warehouse remaining “a separate entity under the umbrella of NFI’s Warehousing and Distribution division,” according to a press release from NFI, based in Cherry Hill, N.J. The acquisition will also add nearly one million additional square feet to the warehouse and distribution space managed

by NFI, bringing the total warehouse space owned or managed by NFI to more than 19 million square feet.

NFI chief executive officer Sidney R. Brown, in a prep a re d s t a t e m e n t , s a i d a c q u i r i n g Wo r l d Wa re h o u s e i s part of the company’s strategic plan “to increase our footprint in Canada.”

“This transaction continues to build upon our previous acquisition of IPD Global – now NFI Canada – expanding our services cross border and within Canada,” Brown said. “By the end of 2011, NFI will operate over 1 million square feet of distribution space in four cities in Canada and manage close to $75 million in transport-

related revenues.”

There is no anticipated effect on the approximately 150 employees at the Champlain, Albany and Laval, Q u e b e c f a c i l i t i e s a s a re s u l t o f a c q u i s i t i o n , s t a t e d O’Shea, who is expected to retain his role as president of World Warehouse.

“I expect we will add to those numbers as we do plan on growing,” O’Shea stated when reached for comment.

According to its Web site, NFI provides transportation, logistics, warehousing, distribution, commercial re a l e s t a t e a n d d e v e l o p m e n t s e r v i c e s a n d m a i n t a i n s 5 , 6 0 0 e m p l o y e e s i n t h e U . S . a n d C a n a d a , m o re t h a n 2,000 tractors, and more than 6,700 dry trailers and 500 refrigerated trailers. In 2010, NFI grossed approximately $900 million revenue.

Police charge two in alcohol sting

LEWIS — Farooq Ramzan, 27, Schroon Lake, and Javeed A. Nazir, 17, Ticonderoga, illegally sold alcohol an 18-yearold during an underage drinking sting March 4, according to state police.

State police, in conjunction with Essex County Stop DWI, conducted the sting among 12 area businesses, with the two nabbed for the sale. Ramzan and Nazir both face misdemeanor charges of first-degree unlawfully dealing with a child and prohibited sale of alcohol. Both were released on appearance tickets.

It was not stated where the two men were employed at the time of the sting.

Severe flooding causes problems ALTONA — Severe flooding last week resulted in at least two families being forced to leave their homes.

Crews from the Altona Volunteer Fire Department and Clinton County Emergency Services were dispatched to Terrien Road March 9 after an ice jam on the Great Chazy River caused flooding that affected two families who live on the dead-end road.

The road was later closed temporarily until the flooding subsided.

Compost plant court decision appealed PLATTSBURGH — The town of Plattsburgh has appealed a recent court decision that resulted in Clinton County transferring property to the city which contains the former compost plant on Rugar Street.

The plant was built on property owned by the county in 1986, using federal funding, though the structure belonged to the city. The plant ceased operation in 2004.

Texas Roadhouse plans OK’d PLATTSBURGH — The town of Plattsburgh planning board unanimously approved plans for Texas Roadhouse to build a 6,700-square-foot restaurant.

The restaurant — which will have seating for 220 people — is slated to be built on State Route 3 at the site of the former Rosebud Creamery site in front of Ames Plaza.

Construction is expected to start this summer and completed for a late fall opening.

Man busted for attempted drug sale to kid TUPPER LAKE — Charles J. Beaudette, age not provided, was arrested March 10 after allegedly trying to sell drugs to a student at L.P. Quinn Elementary School.

A state police investigation found Beaudette attempted to sell marijuana to a juvenile whose name was not released because of his age.

Beaudette was arraigned in Town of Piercefield Court and released on probation. He is scheduled to return to court April 7.

After-school funding cut PLATTSBURGH — The 21st Century after-school program in the Plattsburgh City School District will no longer receive funding beginning in June.

The lack of funding, however, will not mean the end of the 21st Century Learning Center sites, according to local officials. Pending the availability of any grants or the renewal of the 21st Century four-year grant funding, the district is expected to reapply.

The Learning Center sites include Bailey Avenue, Oak Street and Momot elementary schools, Stafford Middle School and the Ted K. Community Center.

Lady Bombers victim of two 10-0 runs in regional playoffs Madrid-Waddington opens, finishes game with edge

keith@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Falling behind was nothing new for the Lake Placid Blue Bombers girls varsity basketball team.

Down 10-0 in the first quarter of their March 8 regional semifinal against MadridWaddington from Section X, Bombers head coach Frank Johns was not worried.

“I’ve seen us fall behind before and I knew that we could come back,” he said.

The Lady Blue Bombers proved him right, but the rally over the nest two quarters left them victim to fatigue and another 10-0 run by the Yellowjackets, falling by the final of 36-31.

“We left everything on the court,” Johns said about his team, who was unable to connect on a field goal in the final eight minutes of play facing a much deeper squad in the Yellowjackets. “Not getting to practice on (March 7) because of the storm hurt us, but there’s no excuses. They were a great team and I wish them the best in the state playoffs. It was a great season, and I am proud of the girls and what they accomplished.”

The Bombers started to get back into the game after the first quarter 10-0 run when Danielle Balestrini connected on a pass from Megan Riley. Balestrini scored seven of her 11 points in the first half and was a big reason the Bombers entered the second half with a 17-16 lead.

“Dani got us back into the game,” Johns said. “They did a good job on Megan, and Dani really did some good things for us. I think the three that she hit was her first all season.”

Balestrini also finished with fives steals with go with two rebounds and two assists.

Under tight coverage, Riley finished with 16 points to go with 10 rebounds, two assists, four steals and eight blocked shots. She scored the only point in the fourth quarter for the Bombers from the free throw line.

“We started rushing things,” Johns said about the fourth quarter. “We had seven players and they played 10 deep.”

Stephanie Murphy added four points and six rebounds to go with an assist and two steals. Mackenzie Kemmerer was held scoreless, but added four rebounds, one assist and two steals. Ayla Thompson combined five steals and three rebounds to go with an assist, while Lauren Tomich had two rebounds and Catalina Daby added a steal.

The Bombers ended the season as the Section VII/Class C champions with a record of 14-7.

LAKE PLACID — Lake Placid U-12 Lady Blue Bombers won the Rail City Classic Tournament in St. Albans, Vt. in February.

After playing two sudden-death overtime periods, the championship game went to a shoot out. In the fourth round, Camryn Brooks beat the Clifton Park Goalie for the winner.

Lake Placid’s Tanner Stanton was outstanding in net for the squad, while a total team effort helped to win the tournament.

The Bombers scored a 4-0 win over the Essex Sting to open the

tournament, followed by a 3-2 win over St. Albans, a 1-0 loss to Berlin, N.H., a 1-1 tie against Clifton Park and a 2-1 championship game win against Clifton Park.

Samantha Barney led the team with six goals. Camyrn Brooks had two goals and two assists, Brianna Savage had one goal and one assist, Annabelle LaCombe had one goal, Mia Kennedy had two assists and Morgan Meyer had two assists, while Kiana Fell, Faith Fell, Tess Stanton and Deyondra Patterson had one assist apiece.

Winter marches on M

arch, which is appropriately known as the month of the Crust Moon, was ushered in by a major storm that delivered over a two feet of snow across the region. Curently, the solid crust permit quick and easy travel whether on skis or snowshoes.

With cool evenings, pleasant afternoon temperatures and steadily increasing hours of daylight, March is one of the finest months for winter recreation in the Adirondacks.

It is a time when local wildlife begin to stir from their winter haunts, the woods remain wide open, and the snow cover is excellent for highlighting tracks. As a wide variety of birds return to the region on a daily basis, tourist numbers begin to dwindle and the trails are lightly traveled.

Sliding: Winter’s Endless Entertainment Even if you don’t ski, skate, snowshoe, snowmobile or ice fish, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy the winter, beyond taking a trip south. Although recent surveys reveal that winter sports have experienced significant growth in only two primary pursuits, snowshoeing and telemark skiing, the most popular, winter activity worldwide remains by far, the most basic.

Nearly any child exposed to a winter environment has enjoyed the activity. It is a pursuit that requires no specialized equipment, no advanced training and no unique skills.

Riding anything from a cardboard box to the seat of a pair of nylon pants, children across the northern latitudes jump at an opportunity to slide across the snow.

Lugging a sled behind them, they’ll climb to the top of the nearest incline and descend endlessly; or until frozen feet, wet pants, soggy mittens and a runny nose require a trip home or a major readjustment.

We’ve all done it, whether on a Flying Saucer, Flexible Flyer ’, Ski Bob, toboggan or some other improvised device such as a cardboard box, tire inner tube, garbage bag or cafeteria tray.

Over the years, numerous local kids have graduated to the more technical sliding pursuits of luge, skeleton or bobsled. And while their accomplishments are now achieved while riding an upgraded version of the ‘Flexible Flyer ’, their sliding careers almost certainly began on ski hill, a local golf course hill or other nearby venues. Despite advancements in ski design, snowmaking, grooming and a host of other modern conveniences, sledding remains the most popular and readily accessible of all winter entertainment.

Extreme/Free Sledding Despite it’s traditional world wide appeal, sliding is now one of the fastest growing “new” winter sports. High tech materials and engineered designs have resulted in upgraded versions of the trusty old, Flexible Flyer.

Labeled “extreme sledding” or “free sledding”, the phrase was coined by participants who utilize a variety of unique sleds to ride over rough, ungroomed and often extreme terrain.

I was introduced to the pursuit several years ago, while cross country skiing on a mountain trail in Ray Brook. It was a very odd experience that took place on St. Patrick’s Day. I was skiing along a well packed snowshoe trail, when out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of movement in the woods, far off the trail. At first glance, I couldn’t quite make out what it was. However, it was moving downhill fast, darting though the hardwoods and careening through the balsams, and I could see at least three of them.

They were small, about the size of a large dog, but they were not bounding like animals. It almost looked as if they were rolling, or sliding.

As they got closer, it initially looked to be a leprechaun bouncing through the woods, and in hot pursuit were two other short figures. They all looked about three feet tall and they were blasting through the fresh powder, bouncing off balsams and slaloming through the saplings.

It was a really, weird sight, and it sure appeared they were having great fun. I immediately skied off the trail to catch up with them, but it wasn’t easy. They were really moving!

The group, all hailing from Vermont, were riding a new type of sled known as a Mad River Rocket. The seven pound sleds were made of vacuum-molded polyurethane and they had grooves in the bottom to permit easy turning.

The sled had a built in knee strap and a foam cushion to permit riders to kneel comfortably. It looked like a winter version of the popular knee-boards/wakeboards, that are commonly used on the lake during the summer.

The leader of the pack, although dressed entirely in green, was not actually a leprechaun. He was a six foot, two inch tall, “free-sledder”. He explained the group had been traveling to the Adirondacks all winter to snowshoe up and sled down numerous local peaks.

The author tries his hand at Free Sledding, by dropping off a steep hill while riding a Mad River Rocket. rudder, or even tree grabbing a tree to maneuver down the steep slopes. As I watched them, the group moved through the forest cover with ease.

“We go where skiers can’t!”, one guy offered, “Because at only three feet tall, kneeling, we’re usually below the tree limbs. It’s neat to grab a sapling and sling around it for a turn. Skiers would get their poles all tangled up doing that.”

He mentioned another advantage that I hadn’t considered, explaining, “We don’t fall down, we just tip over!”

I watched as the group slid off into the distance. I met up with them later in the trailhead parking lot. With snowshoes on their feet, tiny sleds strapped to their packs, and helmets on their heads, they looked like a lost pod of web-footed turtles. They all sported wide smiles and explained they had snowshoed to the summits of many local peaks, including Mt. Marcy. However, they stated a preference for riding off trail, especially in the spring when the crust provides plenty of support.

The Mad River Rocket sled was invented in 1987 by architect David Sellers of Warren Vermont. Sellers fabricated the sled by adapting a vacuum molding process that had been used to produce roto-mold canoe at the nearby Mad River Canoe Company.

His design borrowed the concept of a negative keel from Boston Whaler boats, which makes it track easily.

The sled design requires riders to kneel, which results in a low center of gravity. Riders steer with arms and brake as you lean to and fro. Experienced riders learn how to take advantage of terrain, and to utilize the nearby woods, swinging around trees or using a sapling to slow their descent.

Obituary Anne Townsend Pyle Dennis Sept. 26, 1915 - March 5, 2011 KEENE VALLEY — Anne Townsend Pyle Dennis passed away peacefully at the Horace Nye Home in Elizabethtown, N.Y. on March 5, 2011, surrounded by members of her family.

She was born in 1915 in the Jockey Hollow area of Morristown, N.J. and her family moved “lock, stock, and barn” (a two-story hand-pegged horse barn) to Larger Cross Roads, Bedminster, N.J., to be “closer to the foxhounds.”

Anne grew up “playing hardball and ice hockey with the boys” before spending five years at the allgirls Miss Hall’s School in Pittsfield, Mass. She went on to get her Registered Nursing degree from Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in New York in 1938.

Upon marrying Thomas G. Dennis in 1941, they moved to Sheridan, Wyo., where they ranched and had the first two of their children. They returned to Tewksbury Township, N.J., after the end of World War II, where they raised five children and horses, as well as the occasional cow, sheep and goat.

Anne, well known as a political activist, was the first woman to be elected President of a School Board in the state of New Jersey. She campaigned heavily for Democratic candidates, marched for civil rights, the U.N., and peace. She continued to write Letters to the Editor for local publications, and remained active in the League of Women Voters until late in her life. She always believed education was the key to the future.

In the early 1980s, Anne moved year round to the longtime family summer home in Keene Valley, where her grandparents had met and married

Merrice Wyant ELIZABETHTOWN — Merrice Wyant, of Elizabethtown, NY died March 10th 2011, surrounded by her family.

She was born in 1927 in Westport, NY the daughter of the late John and Ruth (Norton) Gough. She was one of five children.

She graduated from Plattsburgh State as a Home Economics Teacher and began teaching in Washingtonville, NY. She finished her career at Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School, retiring in 1986.

Her years after retirement were spent sailing and vacationing in Texas and Florida.

She was a member of the local garden club and served on the Village Council and Zoning board.

She also enjoyed teaching adult education for years.

She is survived by her husband of 38 years Joe Wyant of Elizabethtown, three daughters Darby Kennedy of Lewis NY, Joette Enfinger of Deland, Fl., Leslie Badore of Vergennes Vt., two sons, Dave

Births amore than a century earlier. She spent her remaining years riding horses, mountain climbing, and telling wonderful stories of her long and fascinating life to anyone who would listen. She finished climbing the 46 Adirondack High Peaks (mountains over 4,000 feet) while in her 70s and continued to ride until she was 90. She was an enthusiastic supporter of the Lake Placid Horse Shows and could always be found at ringside, telling her tales of horse showing and fox hunting in the early days.

She is survived by her brother, Augustus S. Knight (Jane Brown) of Chester, N.J.; three daughters: Mrs. Alan Officer (Lilla) of Kyneton,Victoria, Australia, Dr. Harriet Kline of Norristown, Pa., Dianna Robin of Athenry, Co. Galway, Ireland: two sons, Thomas Gordon Dennis, Jr. of Grand Junction, Colo., and James MacAlpin “Mac” Dennis of Keene Valley; six grandchildren, including Rebecca Kline (Gregg) Peterman, Rapid City, S.D., David Kline (Kristen), Thorndale, Pa., Benjamin Kline (Melissa), Bloomingdale, Anna Officer and Georgina Officer of Melbourne, Australia, and Rebecca Dennis, of Grand Junction, Colo.; four great-grandchildren and one step great-granchild.

A memorial service was held Sunday, March 13, at the Keene Valley Congregational Church, with a reception immediately following.
