“E-x-p-e-r-i-e-n-c-e” proved to be not only the winning word, but what was need to receive top honors in this year’s Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School spelling bee. On Jan. 14, 2011, students in grades 4-8 challenged each other to an academic competition of memorization, and in some cases, excellent guessing. Moderated by K-12 Principal Ken Hughes and judged by Judith Moore, Joe Provoncha and Mary Lou Morgan, five students emerged victorious among their peers: Keegan Sewell (Grade 4), Will Tomkins (Grade 8 and overall champion), Faith Bona (Grade 5), Cora Adams (Grade 7) and Ashlee Fields (Grade 6). Willsboro looks to end water filtration plant Consent Order keith@denpubs.com WILLSBORO — The town of Willsboro is working on improvements to its water filtration plant in order to get out from under the shadow of a DEC Consent Order.

The order, placed April 27 by the state Department of Environmental Conservation, states the water filtration plant, located on Harold’s Bay Road, has an unpermitted point source.

“We have a backwash system and the DEC wants the water going out to be filtered before it goes back into the Lake,” Willsboro town supervisor Edward “Ed” Hatch explained. “We have to make that change in order to please the Consent Order.”

Under the Consent Order, the town would have to pay a total of $6,000 in penalties to the DEC for non-compliance by Nov. 30 of last year. However, Hatch said there have

been no formal meetings because of changes at the DEC. “I guess our one major blessing is that the two major people on our case are now gone and have been replaced,” Hatch said. “We’re back to the drawing boards, really. Both sides have not done much with this, but now we are both looking to move forward on it.”

Hatch said removing the Consent Order from the filtration plant has been at the top of his agenda since he was elected supervisor.

“After taking office, the issue of the Consent Order was made a priority of the town board,” Hatch said in a letter to the DEC on Jan. 7. “(We will) have a plan ready in the very near future for the water plant problem.”

Hatch said the town is working with Earth Science Engineering out of Willsboro to draw up plans for the improvements to the water filtration plant.

The folks at the Agricultural Society have been doing just that, in fact. They’ve been busy planning this year’s fair, which will be Aug. 10-14, and they're putting the word out that if you want your business on a sponsorship T-shirt or banner now is the time to let them know. You can email them at countyfairfun@yahoo.com. The Ag Society was well represented at the 123rd annual NY Agricultural Fairs Convention in Rochester, which was held Jan. 14-17. Several members attended the weekend of workshops, motivational lectures (including one called “Hootie Hoo Attitude”), entertainment, networking, and general brainstorming. One act they’ve already signed is Tim McGraw-impersonator Allen Scott, who’ll

be struttin’ his stuff on Thursday, Aug. 11 at 7 p.m.

The Ag Society is always looking for new ways to promote the fair and our beautiful Fairgrounds, and this year they’ve come up with a great fresh idea—a spring benefit festival at the Fairgrounds, to be held May 13-15.

There will be music all weekend, a car show on Saturday, and a motorcycle rally on Sunday. Plus vendors, a parts swap, and a craft show. This promises to be a lot of fun, and it’s all for a good cause, since proceeds will go the American Cancer Society and Fairgrounds buildings. If you would like to be part of this exciting event as a vendor or crafter, or if you’d like your club to join in, let them know at countyfairfun@yahoo.com. I’ll have more details as the date draws closer.

his Saturday, Feb. 5, the Lakeside Winter Festival will be held at Black Kettle Farm from 1 to 5 p.m. Black Kettle is at the intersection of Cook and Leaning Roads, just outside of Whallonsburg, and the festival will have snowshoe races for kids and adults, sledding, a treasure hunt and cider and doughnuts out in the barn. The cost is $7 for adults or $20 for a family of four or more.

Also on the Feb. 5, the film society will screen “The Kids Are All Right” at 7:30 p.m. in the Willsboro School auditorium. This award-winning comedy is about a lesbian couple and their teenage children’s search for their birth father.

The Move-It Fitness Hour is a cardio, strength and stretching class offered at the Whallonsburg Grange every Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. Bring a mat if you have one; the cost is $3 per session.

For all you hopeless romantics, the Grange is hosting a Valentine’s Dance on Saturday, Feb. 12. All sorts of music will be offered, so get out your dancing shoes and prepare to

hoof around the shiny new floor. All it costs is $5, with students admitted at half price.

Although those who would rather be in Florida may not have noticed, we have had an unbelievable run of excellent winter weather. It hasn’t been too cold, and we’ve avoided the rainy spells that are so depressing. This morning in our woods, every tree branch was loaded with fresh snow, and the sun coming up behind the trees was dazzling. A breeze sent cascades of snow through the light, and the snow underfoot glittered like diamonds.

This morning Ginny and I made an emergency run to Plattsburgh to deliver Amy’s calendar, which she’d left at home and couldn’t function without. My car was filthy from a weekend trip to snowy Massachusetts, so I took the opportunity to go through a car wash. Ginny was deeply concerned with the spraying, whooshing and lurching that are part of the process, but gracefully accepted my apology to her, and afterward happily ran around Amy’s office looking for dog cookies.

A big Happy Birthday to Ida Davis Atkinson, who turned 99 on Jan. 27. She is remarkable, still lives an independent life and is still active with the senior citizens. Another birthday celebration this past week was celebrated with Rev. Chilton McPheeters, some 42 people of his congregation, some fellow clergy and a few close friend gave him a supper party at the Sportsman’s Diner on Tues-

day, Jan. 25.

Here we are in February already and you are encouraged to mark your calendar to come to the 2nd Chocolate Tasting at the Paine Memorial Library on Feb. 13 from 2 to 4. The report from last year that this was a well received event and are hopeful many will attend again. The Friends of the Library prepare these great chocolate treats for you to taste. Then at the close the items left will be sold, great Valentine gift. Another great date to be aware of is Feb. 12, this will be Bud Cushings 90th birthday. He does not get out much these days and we are hoping that many will send cards or give him a birthday greeting call.

hen we think of helping out our favorite charities and causes, the act of donating money almost immediately comes to mind for many of us.

However, here at the NCSPCA there are lots of ways you can help our animals in addition to monetary donations. One of these is through fostering animals who have been abused, neglected, or simply need socializing.

Here is my personal experience as a foster parent.

Several years ago I was offered the opportunity to take in a young male cat, Oscar, who had come from an abusive home and who had developed some behavior problems that were preventing him from finding a forever home.

Oscar, a huge, beautiful Maine Coon, had soulful eyes and a sweet personality which led to his being adopted more than once ... and promptly returned when his new owners

discovered his severe biting habits. I was asked to foster Oscar to see if some of his behavior could be improved. I quickly learned that if I moved suddenly while close to him, he would attack. If I pulled away too quickly, he would startle and duck. Oscar had learned to expect to be hit or grabbed. With time, patience, and a few bite marks, he gradually became more comfortable and the biting behavior dwindled away. In the end, I decided to adopt Oscar, and he is still with me today.

Our featured pet today is Bashful, a sweet little Domestic Shorthair/mix tabby cat with inquisitive eyes. Bashful loves to sit very quietly and try to figure out the world around her. She is a great observer of life with a philosophical mind. This demure little lady is just the right size to cuddle up next to while watching T.V. and she will reward your attention with a rumbling purr. If you are seeking a super sweet feline, Bashful may be the cat for you.

InBrief Youth wrestlers fare well AU SABLE FORKS — Twelve members of Team KOP Wrestling Club traveled to the Schoharie Wrestling Tournament on Sunday Jan. 16. Team KOP crowned four Champions. The places are as follows: First place: Scott Cumber, Brandon Sawyer, John Devins, Ryan Devins.

Society continues films WILLSBORO — Saturday, Feb. 5, the Champlain Valley Film Society presents “The Kids Are All Right,” an offbeat comedy and indie hit about a lesbian couple (Annette Bening and Julianne Moore) whose teenage children become curious about the identity of their birth father (Mark Ruffalo).

Golden Globe nominee for Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Screenplay. The New York Times calls it, “Outrageously funny.” Rated R for strong sexual content, as well as nudity and language. Tickets are $5 for adults and under 18 $2. The movie starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Willsboro Central School.

Food event planned WESTPORT — Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 9:30 a.m., Chef David Hunt, in conjunction with Adirondack Harvest, will host a gathering of chefs and farmers at a meeting at Generations Restaurant to encourage culinary and agricultural connections resulting in more Adirondack-grown food served in local restaurants.

The event is open to all regional chefs and growers interested in learning more about making these connections. Several local farmers and chefs will speak briefly about how to optimize local food supply coordination.

“We’ll meet in a casual setting, have some refreshments, find out what our farmers are growing and what chefs are looking for. Farmers can bring their crop plans and chefs can

bring their menus. We’ll have free handouts and booklets. Buying local produce keeps the North Country strong and helps keep agriculture thriving in the Adirondacks,” said Adirondack Harvest Coordinator Laurie Davis, “Everyone is looking to buy local and eat local. We want out farmers and restaurants to take advantage of this opportunity to strengthen the regional economy.”

Loppet set for this Saturday LAKE PLACID — The 29th annual Lake Placid Loppet cross-country ski races, presented by High Peaks Cyclery, will be held Saturday, Feb. 5, at the Olympic Sports Complex Cross Country Ski Center.

The Lake Placid Loppet has established itself as one of the best events of its kind in the country. Over the past 28 years, thousands of skiers have enjoyed skiing and racing on the challenging Mt. Van Hoevenberg trails at the Olympic Sports Complex. The Lake Placid Loppet is a proud member of the American Ski Marathon Series.

This annual event attracts hundreds of skiers from across the United States and Canada. It consists of a 50-kilometer Loppet (30.1 miles) and a 25-kilometer Kort-Loppet (about 15 miles).

There will be classic technique and free technique race starts for both the 25K and 50K races. Bib pickup will run from 3 to 8 p.m. in the Olympic Sports Complex Cross-Country Lodge on Friday, Feb. 4, and on race day, Feb. 5, bib pick-up runs from 7 to 8:30 a.m. There is no race day registration. The 50K classic technique race begins at 9 a.m. followed by the 25K classic race at 9:15 a.m. The 50K free technique race starts at 10 a.m. and the 25K free technique race will follow at 10:15 a.m.

Each finisher will receive a commemorative pin, gold for the Loppet and silver for the KortLoppet. There will be an awards banquet at the Comfort Inn, set to kick-off at 3 p.m. following the race; each participant will receive a free banquet ticket with their registration packet.

Additional banquet tickets are available for purchase, $25 for adults and $20 for children under 12.

Let us bow our heads To the Editor: “Let us pray,” Apple pie, “I pledge allegiance,” Chevy, and “In God we trust” are all good old fashioned American sayings or items of known affection. I sneezed yesterday and some unknown but kind person said to me, “God bless you.” That is not newsworthy but it is a part of our heritage to be nice in the manner you were brought up.

Sometime ago someone said the most respected and honorable Essex County Clerk had to many hats, now some unknown assailant doesn’t want him to lead a prayer that he was asked to do? Let’s be real folks! Any local religious leader should be proud to know that bodies of people were praying in general, regardless of faith. Many of us still pray, and I feel no ill will towards those that do not care to. A very bad joke that circulated over the internet in the past was about a person who asked God why he allowed a tragedy to happen in their school and he answered, I’m not allowed in your school. Let us all enjoy our apple pie and say prayer for whatever we decide to pray to or about. In that frame of mind we should have and show respect for those who may not feel the same about race, color, creed, God and the “All American” old fashioned way of life. Pleased for the freedom to sign my name.

everal events have hit home with me recently, causing me pause and to reflect about the true meaning and impact they have, not only on my life, but the lives of all who share this small world we all call home.

Perhaps like you, I pull from life experiences to draw perspective on current events.

I thought back to my childhood upbringing. I was taught to respect the differences of others and to be tolerant of those around me, for they also had “rights,” In the early 1960s, my family moved from western Pennsylvania to the deep south, in Texas.

Two situations crossed my mind.

For those of you who may not have been around back then, the nation was dealing with severe racial issues and African Americans in our society had not yet achieved true equality.

I recall after school I would hang around and help the African American janitor empty waste paper cans and sweep the floors. Our neighborhood wasn’t racially diverse, but I had no preconceived notions about such things. I must have been in second grade or so and no one was paying me or forcing me by way of punishment to be there. We came from very different backgrounds, but I recall enjoying his company. He was a nice man and we laughed and talked about the events of our day. Of course, I was pretty much oblivious to the racial issues, except for some cautioning by my parents. I didn’t know or care about the racial events swirling around. He accepted me and I him.

About the same time I recall a school yard bully. He was about a year or two older than I, and for a period, every time he would see me, he would grab me by the shoulders and throw me to the ground. And I wasn’t the only one who suffered this ritual fate. I didn’t know him, nor did I ever have a run-in with him before this started, but being larger and tougher in appearance than me at the time, I had no choice but to brush myself off and try my best to steer clear of him on the playground at recess. Then one day he approached me, and as I prepared to bite the dust, he stopped, apologized and asked if we could be friends. At the time it seemed like a great alternative to not being friends.

As we palled around, I discovered we had many differences and oddly enough he was an atheist going to a Catholic school. On occasion, the kid would eat dog or cat food.

Gainesburgers had recently been introduced and I recall he considered them a delicacy. Despite his encouragement, there was no way I was putting that stuff to my lips. We would talk about religious beliefs, and while we never swayed each other, it never seemed to matter to either of us. I later learned more about the difficult life and poverty his family experienced.

As we fast forward to 2011, I can’t help but wonder why we can’t accept the differences

February 5, 2011 among us and be more tolerant of each other.

As a young child, I was able to accept people for who they were with no strings attached.

But more and more these days people seem to be confusing freedoms with an entitlement to control. We hear stuff like, “I’m entitled to have whatever I want and anyone who stands in the way of my choices will just have to change their ways because this is MY America and anything that I find opposed to MY Way of Life must be wrong!”

The Bill of Rights guarantees us certain freedoms, among them the right to assemble, to speak freely, to respect the establishment and practice of religion, to be secure in our homes and to not unduly deny the rights of others. But these laws designed to protect the freedoms of all are being used by a few who find some actions or activities offensive to their beliefs.

In Essex County government, some find a short prayer before the session offensive. In Tupper Lake, despite strong community support, we see environmental groups blocking needed economic development proposed by the Adirondack Club. Last year, we saw some of the same groups behind blocking the development on the Lewis Family Farm in Essex.

There are many things going on all around us that some find offensive and yet others find very acceptable and that’s OK. We can and will have differences. It is those differences that make us strong and unique.

But there are big differences between offending actions and seeking to control everything you see, hear and want. You might be offended by hearing a prayer. So come to the meeting a few minutes late or close your eyes and listen to your iPod… you’ll survive the experience. You might be offended that in this tiny hamlet of Tupper Lake a resort club and homes will be built, people will have jobs, storefronts will be a filled, and money will again flow through this once prominent community improving the quality of life for those who make this area their home… you’ll survive if they build it, while many may not survive if it doesn’t get built.

Last week I attended the Bullying Discussion hosted by MAPP. The discussion focused on bullying in our schools. We heard about local statistics, watched a video that featured a number of children around the country who have been bullied because of simple and meaningless differences. Some have even been driven to commit suicide. Like my friend in grade school or the elderly janitor who taught me much about people, I didn’t have to agree with their beliefs or the things they did to accept them. Skin color, religious or political beliefs, mode of dress, color of your hair, where you choose to live or other life style choices ... there are plenty of days I shake my head at the actions of others who think and act differently than I, but, in the end, so long as they are doing no personal harm to anyone, I can respect their right to share this small world and enjoy the control, over their life choices, that I have the right to expect in my own life choices.

hands and forged a deal that would benefit everyone. This is a reason to celebrate, not second-guess.

To the Editor: Last week, you printed an article that was critical of the state’s recent purchase of a conservation easement on about 89,000 of land and water in the Adirondack Park from the Nature Conservancy. The writer overlooked some important facts.

The state spent $30 million from the Environmental Protection Fund to buy development rights and recreational rights on these former Finch, Pruyn & Co. lands. But the deal was even better for the economy than for the environment. The money was spread across 27 Adirondack towns, where new snowmobile trails, hiking trails and fishing access will be opened to the public for the first time in 130 years. That’s a $1.1 million average investment in each town’s tourism.

The deal had the support of all 27 Adirondack town supervisors, every one of whom knew the details and negotiated specific benefits for his/her community. For example, North Hudson, Newcomb, Long Lake, Minerva and Indian Lake will share a brand new trail network as part of 75 additional miles of snowmobile trails that can be wider and more easily groomed than trails on public Forest Preserve. Other towns asked for and received access via float plane to remote lakes. In addition, the Nature Conservancy made sure the former Finch papermill in Glens Falls was guaranteed a supply of pulp timber from these lands for at least the next 20 years.

At the same time, the state’s easement pur-

chase prevented the loss of timber industry jobs that would have come if these lands were subdivided and purchased for other purposes. Once something like that happens, the opportunity to harvest the trees for paper and wood products is gone forever — on some of the park’s most productive timberlands.

Some people might be surprised to learn that the work of land-saving organizations such as The Nature Conservancy, Open Space Institute, Conservation Fund, and others, is what has saved the timber industry in the Adirondacks. All of the park’s major timber companies fled the Northeast in the past 25 years, selling their lands and closing their mills. This includes Champion International, International Paper, Diamond International, Domtar Industries, Finch, Lyons Falls Pulp & Paper, and a host of others. Together, they owned more than one million acres of private forests in the Adirondack Park. It all went on the market.

If those companies had sold their lands to developers, no one would be talking about putting public trails on them. We would all be watching the new owners build fences and put up posted signs. We would be wondering what might happen to those forests we know and love. Instead, more than two dozen Adirondack towns took matters into their own

Thanks for coverage To the editor: I want to thank Denton Publications for the greater coverage of the whole Adirondacks in our local papers. I have certainly noticed the trend, and meant to write and thank you before this.

Last fall there was a meeting held in Chestertown, sponsored by Teresa Sayward and Betty Little. It tackled all the concerns and problems of the Adirondack residents and was well attended by people from the whole park.

The meeting was not well publicized beforehand, and I was pleased to see so many people there. Also, I was glad to notice coverage

by Thom Randall, and noticed that no other papers were represented there.

This region needs a sense of community, which is hard to maintain in view of the distances between us. The papers published by Denton Publications are being of great service in uniting us. Your guest editorial in last week's paper by Mark Moeller was particularly welcome and enlightening to those of us who have similar problems, and usually unfa-

miliar with the situation in Tupper Lake. It is too easy for interests outside the park to make inroads in our small communities while the rest of us are unaware.

The people of North Creek got together and resurrected the train station a few years ago, and have enjoyed the surge of business that the Upper Hudson Railroad has brought to their small town. Now the Warren County Board of Supervisors has fired the company, which has operated the system, and is quibbling about its successor while the summer season approaches without plans. The Glens Falls Post Star pays little attention to this quandary, and is uninterested in covering happenings outside the Glens Falls-Saratoga area.

VA Clinic welcomes vets to new locations in Westport, Saranac Lake

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com WESTPORT — Not only has the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) clinic moved into an expanded new area in Westport, they are also bringing their services to a new satellite office in Saranac Lake.

“It was a long process to get to where we are now,” Peter Potter, with Veterans Services for the state of New York. “You want to make sure that you have done everything that you absolutely can do to provide the best care for the veterans.”

The VA clinic, which was located at the Elizabethtown Community Hospital, has recently opened its doors at the Elizabethtown Community Based Outpatient Clinic at 7426 NYS Rte 9N, the site of the former New York State Police barracks.

“That site is open for business and patient care,” Potter said. “We are still working on the building and areas that we want to renovate so we can provide more stuff for our patients, but we are seeing patients there right now.”

Meanwhile, the new Saranac Lake satellite office, which will be located at 33 Depot St., is anticipated to open in April.

“This CBOC is still in the construction phase,” Potter said. “Certainly, with continued snow and extremely cold temperatures, the construction timeline has been extended, but we anticipate that the clinic will be func-

Office hours are currently Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until noon and 1 to 4:30 p.m., with office hours expected to be shared between the Elizabethtown CBOC and the Saranac Lake Satellite Office and will be based on veterans’ needs.

The clinic currently serves 765 men and 23 women and staffers want to provide closer services to those in the Tri-Lakes area.

“We’ve been told by local officials that there’s a population of about 4,500 veterans in the Tri-Lake region, many of whom have had to travel over an hour for their primary

care if they chose to utilize VA health care,” Potter said. “Considering the distance, there are many veterans that did not utilize the available services. With this new satellite clinic, veterans will have easier access to the high quality health care they have earned through their service to our country.”

Potter said that veterans are free to choose what location they wish to receive their VA health care, so once both sites are open, they will have a better idea of the needs of both sites with regard to clinic time and will be able to plan accordingly.

“VA staff will be providing the health care at these two sites, which was identified as a

high priority in the reassessment of how the VA was providing services,” Potter said.

“The patient centered health care team consists of a physician, an RN Care Manager, an LPN, and clerical staff to provide primary care services at the clinic, stressing health maintenance and preventative medicine.”

Staff members include Carrie DeChavez RN, Peg McCurdy-Quain RN Nurse Manager, Nancy Mahoney LPN, and Sean Brown MSA. Potter said that the new sites will help both the VA and the patient.

“Costwise, not only will VA be saving money through this new CBOC model, more importantly, we can ensure that veterans will be guaranteed that the same high standard of care is available, no matter the location they choose to receive that care,” Potter said. “The VA can ensure that no position will be vacant.”

New York Press Association Paid Summer Internship Program

Local businessman moves facilities to new Au Sable Forks site Au SABLE FORKS — A locally owned and operated invasive species management business is establishing its headquarters in Au Sable Forks.

Andrew Lewis, a Saranac Lake resident and co-owner of Aquatic Invasive Management, announced recently that the business has begun operations at its new headquarters in Au Sable Forks.

Founded in 2007 by Lewis and Tommy Thomson of Lake Placid, AIM specializes in the removal of invasive aquatic plants from lakes in the Adirondacks and surrounding areas.

They employ local divers and surface tenders who use various techniques to remove the

invading vegetation by hand.

Starting with a small job on Minerva Lake in 2007, the business wrapped up its busiest year in 2010, removing 73.5 tons of milfoil growth from nine lakes in northern New York.

The company currently employs 13 local people for a five-month work season.

“The work is hard, especially for the divers, so our people are paid well,” Thomson said, noting that many of the AIM employees are able to cover most of their yearly living costs with their income from the job.

“We hope to develop the business into something that can employ people year-round,” he added.

That, Lewis says, depends on how much the business grows. He says the company is in talks with several lake organizations that may be added to the client list in 2011.

AIM clients have found that hand-harvesting of milfoil is more efficient and less damaging to the environment than chemical treatments.

Thomson and Lewis are looking forward to a more productive work season in 2011 thanks to the benefits of their large two-bay garage with attached offices in AuSable Forks.

Thomson said that after years of operating out of their backyards, basements, garages and home offices, the business can finally keep its

equipment sheltered, organized and wellmaintained while running the business all in the same building.

Third Age Adult Day Center expands to E-town

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — The Third Age Adult Day Center will soon be opening its doors in Elizabethtown.

“It’s very exciting to be offering these services in Essex County,” Yvonne Lott, assistant director of Third Age, said. “We are thrilled to be opening in Elizabethtown and we are looking at the possibility of one other office location in the future.”

According to the groups Web site, Third Age is an adult social day program of the Northeastern New York Alzheimer's Disease Assistance Center, offering seniors with memory impairment, loneliness, or frailty and their families an alternative to nursing home placement or home care services.

“Our center in Plattsburgh has been opened since 1990 and the purpose of the

program is to provide socialization for those in need of it,” Lott said. “It is mostly for those who are frail, for those who have cognitive impairments, or those who are looking for contact with other seniors in the area.”

Lott said it also provides a chance for caregivers to have a respite.

“It not only helps the senior to become involved with a new community of friends, it also alleviates some of the stress on the caregiver on caring for a loved one,” Lott said.

Lott added that their services also help to delay the need for nursing home care.

“It is a very, very expensive thing,” Lott said. “In the long run, a program like this makes caring for a loved one more cost effective.”

Lott said programs include cognitive therapy, music therapy and other activities.

“I know that they are looking at garden-

ing as the weather gets warmer for an activity,” Lott said. “We try to focus on the individual and their abilities. “We want to get to know the person first.”

Kathy Scott, Elizabethtown program supervisor, said she is looking forward to opening the new branch of Third Age at the Elizabethtown Social Center sometime in the beginning of February.

“We have been ordering the supplies and getting everything ready,” Scott said. “I’m ready to start.”

Scott said she is currently looking for volunteers to help with the program.

“It is not a big commitment, even if someone can help for a half-hour each day, that would be great,” Scott said.

ETC seeks play proposals ESSEX — The Essex Theatre Company is seeking play proposals for reader’s theater for August and for the dark nights in July. They are planning to produce the rock opera/musical “Rent,” directed by Derrick A. Hopkins, on July 15-17, 21-24, and 28-31. People can choose any night, but these and at least two weeks prior as “Rent” will be in rehearsal.

People can submit proposals by e-mailing the name and author of the play, the number of male and female characters, a brief synopsis of the play, the dates you would like to see it per-

Synchronized skating set LAKE PLACID — More than 2,300 skaters from 150 teams throughout the eastern United States will compete at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid during the 2011 Eastern Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships, Feb. 3-5. The event was last held in Lake Placid in 1998.

The event is a qualifier to the U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships. The top four finishers in the senior, junior, novice, intermediate, juvenile, collegiate, adult and masters divisions will move on.

Students look forward to service opportunities as members of Willsboro National Honor Society

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com WILLSBORO — Fifteen teenagers were named to an elite group of students at Willsboro Central School last week.

Seven joined the William Gilliland Chapter of the National Honor Society, while eight new members were welcomed to the Ashleigh MacDougal Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society.

Anna Daly, a junior at Willsboro and president of the Gilliland Chapter, said that the organization is looking forward to serving the community in the coming months.

“We are currently selling daffodils for the National Cancer Society through March 3,” Daly said. “We will also have a team in the Relay for Life, we will be holding our food drive for the local food shelf and we will continue next year to collect toys for local children.”

Daly said that she has enjoyed the friends that she has made in the NHS. “I really like this group because everyone wants to be involved and puts forth their best effort on whatever we do,” she said.

“They work well together and it is a very good group,” Gail MacDougal, NHS advisor, added. “There is a strong core of juniors that are involved in NHS along with several sophomores and seniors. I think that the closeness

Local athletes tabbed all-state ELIZABETHTOWN — Several athletes have been named to the New York State Sportswriters Associations’ high school all-state teams:

Football Three members of the Red Storm football squad were named to the third team by the NYSSWA. On offense, placekicker Forrest Morgan, whose 34-yard field goal in overtime sent the Red Storm past the vaunted Hoosick Falls club out of Section II, was named to the third team.

He was joined by defensive lineman Brian Fortune and defensive back Austin McDonough on the third team.

Saranac defensive back Dylan Everleth was also selected to the fourth team defense for Class B.

Girls Soccer Three members of he Chazy Lady Eagles state championship girls soccer team were named to the first team in Class D, including state player of the year Astrid Kempainen, who was joined by coach Karin Sherman-Trombley, who was named coach of the year in Class D. Senior goalie Katharine Tooke and junior midfielder Kirsten Doran were also named to the first team, while senior striker Caitlyn LaPier was named to the second team.

In Class B, Peru freshman Lindsey Bushey was named to the first team, while seniors Charisse Abellard and Emily Schultz of Plattsburgh were named to the fifth team.

Boys Soccer Kaleb Snide helped lead the Chazy Eagles to the state championship, and was rewarded with a mention on the first team for Class D. Jordan Barriere was named to the fifth team from Chazy, along with Willsboro standout Clay Sherman.

Jordan Knight of Plattsburgh was named to the Class C second team in the state, while Northeastern Clinton’s Jamie Davison was named to the third team.

Seniors shine for Lady Bombers’ home ice finale

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — For the three senior members of the Lake Placid varsity girls hockey team, the final regular season home game was a chance to get a playoff game on home ice.

The trio of seniors worked to assure a first round game on home ice, as Catherine Valentine scored a pair of slapshot goals, Brenna Whiting tallied a goal and Marina Flagg made 12 saves as the Lady Blue Bombers scored a 3-0 win over Skaneateles Jan. 29.

“Our seniors have been true leaders all year,” head coach Sandy Huber said after the game. “They are all fifth year players and they are coming on strong. I think that Marina is looking as strong as she has had all season, and now has a four-game shutout streak.”

Huber said that along with the game to honor the seniors, she was pleased with a big win, which gives them home ice against Oswego next weekend for a state quarterfinal game.

“We knew that we needed at least a tie to secure home ice,” Huber said. “Skaneateles kept coming at us and came out hard in the third period, but we didn’t let up and went all out for the win.”

“It was a pretty important game,” Flagg said. “They came out hard in the third period and we definitely had to step it up defensively and maintain an aggressive defense, even when they had a two-player advantage.”

Hornets sting Pats; Warriors beat Lions PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh Hornets boys varsity basketball team used a 4821 run over the middle two quarters to pull away from the AuSable Valley Patriots Jan. 24. for a 79-54 Kyle LaPoint led the Hornets with a 19 point effort, while Andrew Favro scored 14 points, Tre Bucci scored 12 points, Ethan Votraw and Anthony Porcelli scored eight points and Justin Curtis scored seven Connor Manning scored 17 points. points in two games.

For the trio of seniors, the final regular season home game was a chance to reflect on their accomplishments and friendship.

Students get hands-on experience in medical field through New Visions

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — Five local students are getting the opportunity to get a sneak-peak at the medical world while earning high school and college credits.

New Visions, a program offered through CVTEC, allows students to embark on career-oriented programs, such as the medical industry, by working with professionals in those fields at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital and Elizabethtown Community Hospital.

“This advanced program is designed to provide motivated high school seniors from a variety of Essex and Clinton County schools with a challenging academic curriculum in preparation for a medical career,” Tammi Kreckel, instructor for the Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School-based program, said.

“We have five students that were interested in different areas of medicine,” Kreckel said about the class. “This course gives them the opportunity to experience different medical careers and it is an opportunity to explore the options that are out there for them. They get to branch out to see all sides of health care.”

Students participating in the class include Beekmantown seniors Zachary Burdick and Dakota Prue, Plattsburgh senior Brad Phillips, Keene senior Jessica Caner and ELCS senior Ashli Canabush.

“I watch what was going on when my father had cancer, and it inspired me to look into the medical field,” Canabush said, who had already been working at ECH as a volunteer. “I enjoy all of the new things that I see every day and this is opening our mind to the possibilities that are out there. I was first considering being an RN. Now, I am going to try and be a nurse practitioner.”

Canabush said that she has found a new desire for the profession as part of the program.

“It pushes me to want to do more because the more that I can do, the more people I can help,” Canabush said. “I feel so good about it.

It’s exciting to meet new people and be a part of their life in a positive way.”

Phillips said he also joined the program based on family experiences.

“My parents are both nurses,” Phillips said.

“I have been volunteering when they work I wanted to learn more. This has been great because I have been able to go into departments

ECH to host Healthy Heart Day Elizabethtown Community Hospital Auxiliary will be hosting its annual Healthy Heart Day on Wednesday, Feb. 16, from 3 p.n. until 6 p.m.

This year, the event will be held at the Elizabethtown Community Health Center, across from the main hospital facility, in an effort to combine the event with an informal open house, showcasing the hospital’s cardiac rehabilitation facility.

This event offers community members the opportunity to take part in a free heart health screening. Participants are able to have a blood pressure check, glucose level testing and cholesterol level check. They are able to learn easy exercise tips, sample and take home heart-healthy recipes, get important health information, view various exhibits and talk with professionals about taking care of their heart.

This year, Healthy Heart Day will also feature an opportunity to visit with staff

from the hospital’s cardiac rehab program; and to learn about the equipment and technology required to make the program a reality. “The high-tech equipment and wireless monitoring system are impressive,” said Kristin Dooley, cardiac rehab exercise specialist. “The exercise equipment tracks and monitors patient progress – it’s really interesting technology.”

According to Dr. Rob DeMuro, ensuring heart health is one of the most important things anyone can do. “There are many conditions that lead to heart disease, including high blood pressure and high cholesterol,” he said. “If detected early the conditions are often treatable, lessening the likelihood that heart disease will develop later on.

Adirondack Business Center pleased with results

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — Three groups of graduates have learned a smarter way to start their own business — or keep it going.

That is the number of classes that have gone through the new Adirondack Business Center in Saranac Lake since it opened its doors on Nov. 1, 2010.

“We are trying to support small businesses and entrepreneurs who have been working at or are thinking about starting a business,” Shannon Mercurio, who works with Cindy Barge at the Saranac Lake center, said. “We are hoping to use our program to help small business owners particularly in rural areas.”

The new business programs are supported through Clarkson University, under the direction of Marc Compeau and associate Erin Draper.

“They put 450 people through the original program at Clarkson,” Mercurio said. “The idea was then, let’s take this to other places and help out more people.”

The new business portion of the center offers a four-week, free class on operating small businesses, along with other fee-based classes for those who want to learn more.

“Close to 75 people have gone through the class here and we have received a lot of positive feedback,” Mercurio said. “Our hope is that programs like this would bring more

Mercurio said the group hopes to continue to hear feedback from those who have taken advantage of the center as well as the community at large.

“We are open about hearing what it is that the community needs and then doing our best to feed that need,” Mercurio said. “The classes are where we have been focusing the majority

of our energy in providing that kind of support to the business community.”

Along with the education component of the center, Mercurio said the site also offers several business accommodations.

“We have a conference room, office spaces and computer work stations that we rent out,” Mercurio said. “We are slowly starting to pick up on those services.”

Tumbling registration open LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid Center for the Arts will be hosting tumbling classes beginning March 16 in the new Annex studio at the Arts Center. Registration begins on Tuesday, Feb. 1, at 9:30 a.m.

During the weekly sessions, youngsters two years to 12 years of age will be introduced to tumbling and basic gymnastic skills. The goal of the program is to develop strength, flexibility and coordination while simultaneously building self-confidence.

The classes will be instructed by Donna Walsh, Mary Heaverly and Debbie Neill.

Classes will be held on Wednesdays for eight weeks: March 16, 23, 30; April 20, 27; and May 4, 11 and 18.

Classes will be offered in the following groups: Tots A, ages 2 to 3 (must be accompanied by an adult), will meet from 1:15 p.m. until 2 p.m. with a course fee of $64.

Tots B, for ages 2 to 3 (will only run if Section A is full and tots must be accompanied by an adult), will meet from 2 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. with a course fee of $64. Kinder Gym is for children 3 to 5 years of age from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m. with a course fee of $80. Wiggle and Roll is geared for children 5 to 8 years of age and will meet from 4 to 5 p.m. with a course fee of $80. Flips is presented for ages 8 to 12 years from 5 to 6 p.m. with a course fee of $80.

Obituaries Malcolm L. Slater Jan. 26, 2011 Malcolm L. Slater, 75, of East Syracuse, died peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He was a graduate of the Albany Business College and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Slater had retired after 29 years of service from the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. He was an active member and former treasurer of James Street United Methodist Church. He was an Adirondack 46er and enjoyed tennis, hiking and cross-country skiing. Saranac Lake Rotary ready for annual Winter Carnival show Feb. 11 Dancers mum about show

By Andy Flynn andy@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE – Secrecy is paramount when it comes to the annual Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Rotary Show, set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11 at the Harrietstown Town Hall.

Not the event itself, but the Rotary Show Dancers, an 82-year tradition. The dancers are typically a gaggle of men in drag — cushions in bras, wigs, dresses and lipstick — dancing to musical numbers designed to complement the Carnival theme. This year, it's “Medieval Times.”

So, will there be knights and princesses and gallantry at the Rotary Show? And how many of the Rotary Show Dancers will be damsels in distress? Only the dancers know, and they're sworn to secrecy.

“We don't even know,” said Margo Nagle, member of the Saranac Lake Rotary Club and chair of the one-person Program Committee, in charge of signing up the entertainment. They don't tell her anything about the dance routine, and the practice sessions are held behind closed doors.

Rotarian Bill Plumb is the chair of the Rotary Show Dancers committee, and he's not talking. Multiple phone messages have been left unanswered.

But Nagle did reveal the lineup for the Rotary Show. And look there! The Rotary Show Dancers are listed at the bottom of the program. The public will have to wait even longer to see what these men have in store for their entertainment.

“I'm really excited about this year's Rotary Show,” said Mary Brown, Rotary Show co-chair. “We expect another sellout, we've got a great lineup of acts, and it's going to be a lot of fun for everybody.”

The Rotary Show venue is the historic Harrietstown Town Hall, built in 1927, featuring an expansive wooden floor, which will be lined with packed seats, balcony seating to the back and the two sides of the hall on the second floor, and a full stage.

Colorful Winter Carnival banners from years past will be hung from the balconies, and decorations will provide a festive backdrop on stage.

The Coronation Ceremony on Feb. 4, the Rotary Show, and the Gala Parade on Feb. 12 are the largest spectacles of Winter Carnival. The Rotary Show is filled with music, stories, comedy and tradition. The community of Saranac Lake will be there in full force, the Carnival royalty in the front row, the families, village leaders and businessmen, all the movers and shakers and hundreds of neighbors. This is small-town America at its best.

Scott Eichoholz — a “knight” on the

town — will provide pre-show entertainment from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Mary Brown will welcome the audience. Rotary Club President John Banta will give the introduction.

And the master of ceremonies — Father Rick Dennis — will present the 2011 Winter Carnival court and royalty.

The Winter Carnival royal party includes the king and queen (to be announced the evening of Feb. 4 at Coronation), attendants to the king and queen (Eliza Lennon and Adam Heverly), grand marshal (Cathy Moore), archbishop (Sara Posdzich), chamberlain (Joe Thill), princess (Courtney Ellen Petkovek), prince (William Jeremiah Ward IV), pages (Jacob Adams, Isabelle Celeste, Rachel Daby, Jake Mouraine, Dylan Murnane and Emma Peer), and the High School Court ladies (Gaby Feliu, Faith Conners, Julie Bowler, Cadence Roddy, Ryan Garnish, Geanette Orton and Molly Burgess) and gentlemen (Sean Ryan, Braxton Tissot, Sam Baker, Dalton DeMarco, Dylan Dawson, Wyatt Daviau, and Nicholas Magro).

Steve Borst, the Musician to the Royal Court, will provide entertainment, and there will be dance routines by the pages and court members. This will be followed by performances by the Saranac Lake High School Vocal Ensembles, directed by Helen Demong and accompanied by Tom Delahant. Afterward, there will be acts by

Steven Gratto (“Comedy Juggler Extraordinaire”), pianist Joey Izzo, Adirondack singer/songwriter Roy Hurd, storyteller Doug Fitzgerald with “Tales of the North Country,” and finally, the Rotary Show Dancers.

The Rotary Club relies heavily on the Program Committee chair to make sure the Winter Carnival Rotary Show is fresh to keep people coming back year after year.

The Dancers and their new routines help with that as well.

“I think they're real vital to the show,” Brown said, adding that Nagle deserves a lot of the credit. “She's the kind of program chair that makes my life easy.”

The Winter Carnival Rotary Show is a major fundraiser for the Saranac Lake Rotary Club, which gives back to the community through scholarships and to help projects such as the local skateboard park, Lift Mount Pisgah and the Adirondack Carousel.

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — Last summer, the community of Saranac Lake mourned the loss of 19-year-old Casey McHugh, who died in a skateboard accident.

Now, friends and family have come together to organize an event based on one of his favorite activities.

“He enjoyed getting out on the ice and playing some hockey and loved the pickup games out on the pond,” said Emily Doyle, who became friends with McHugh in high school and were roommates in college, organized the event with the support of her family and the McHugh family.

“The whole McHugh family will be at the event along with 10 or 12 friends that really wanted to come and help out,” Doyle said.

The Casey McHugh Pond Hockey Tournament will take place on Sunday, Feb. 13, starting at 11 a.m. at the rink located behind the Bloomingdale firehouse on State Route 3. The event is part of the last day of the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival.

“I get one team signing up every day,” Doyle said about the response to the event, which will benefit the Casey McHugh Scholarship at Saranac Lake Central School. “The registration has gone well, and we currently have about 15 to 16 teams, with the cutoff being 32.”

Doyle also said the local community is showing their support, as well.

“A lot of local businesses are donating to the event to make it a special day,” Doyle said.

Teams can register for the tournament by contacting Doyle and entering with a $18 per team fee.

Review board votes against land purchase

By Chris Morris denpubs@denpubs.com RA BROOK — The Adirondack Local Government Review Board unanimously passed a resolution last week opposing the impending state purchase of some 75,000 acres of Adirondack land from a conservation group.

According to the resolution, the state intends to purchase more than 65,000 acres of former Finch Pruyn timberlands and about 15,000 acres of land in the Follensby Pond area from the Adirondack Chapter of the Nature Conservancy.

Last week’s resolution states that the review board opposes the fee acquisition of

the lands in question.

It also urges the state Adirondack Park Agency to remain compliant with the State Land Master Plan by recommending against the state Department of Environmental Conservation’s potential fee purchase of what review board officials call – quote – “highly productive timberland.”

Executive director of the Adirondack Local Government Review Board, Fred Monroe, said Gov. Andrew Cuomo should commission a study on the economic and social impacts of further state land acquisitions inside the Blue Line.

Monroe adds that the state’s current fiscal crisis is a good argument against purchasing more land.

Rail trail study recommends that doing something is better than doing nothing

By Chris Morris denpubs@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — A local not-for-profit organization unveiled a study last night that shows a recreational path between Lake Placid and Tupper Lake would be more beneficial to the economy than extending the scenic rail line to Tupper Lake.

But creating a multi-use trail connecting the three Tri-Lakes communities would also be more costly.

AdkAction is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit based in Saranac Lake. The group commissioned the study in order to examine the construction costs and economic impacts of either extending the scenic railway or converting it to

a recreational corridor for skiers, snowmobilers, hikers and bikers.

The group’s chairman, David Wolff, said one thing is clear following the release of the study: doing something is better than doing nothing.

“Either option is a positive economic plus for the communities – so pick one,” he said. “Do something. Don’t let it just lie foul.”

The rail corridor has been a hot topic in the Tri-Lakes region for years.

Supporters of the railway say the Adirondack Scenic Railroad is a significant tourist attraction that would benefit from overhauling the unused rail line between Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake.

Opponents of the railroad say more tourists would flock to the Tri-Lakes if the corridor

could be used for a variety of recreational opportunities.

The study was conducted by Camoin Associates and Barton & Logudice.

Barton & Logudice utilized existing state Department of Transportation documentation and studied similar conversion projects in New York to establish construction costs for three scenarios: upgrading the line between Tupper Lake and Lake Placid; permanently converting the rail line to a multi-use, recreational path; and temporarily converting the line to a trail and storing the rails for possible future use.

“What we tried to do in the estimates is develop a consistent basis for all three scenarios,”

he said. “We couldn’t really base it on actual local numbers or numbers that somebody gave us – we tried to base it on national indexes that were reliable, that we use commonly when we’re doing our own estimates.”

Overall, upgrading the rail line and extending scenic rail service to Tupper Lake would cost approximately $10.6 million and result in some 171 temporary construction jobs.

A permanent conversion to a multi-use trail would cost about $14.6 million and result in the creation of nearly 300 temporary construction jobs. The same number of jobs would be created for a temporary conversion to a trail, but that would be most costly at some $18.8 million.

For the recreational path, those numbers are closer to $12 million.

News of the Week Altona couple saved by family dog ALTONA — Judy and Gilbert Rabideau were saved by their Labrador retriever, Sunshine, Jan. 21, when the dog alerted them of a fire in the house.

Both Judy and Gilbert are disabled and were asleep when the blaze erupted from their woodstove.

Despite efforts from firefighters, the home was destroyed. If interested in helping the family, who lost everything in the fire, call 236-5946.

Tupper officer slept in car TUPPER LAKE — Tupper Lake Police Chief Tom Fee told the Village Board of Trustees earlier this month that he caught one of his officers sleeping on the job while he was supposed to be on patrol.

Fee told the Village Board he was trying to find out if officers on his staff were misappropriating their time. The officer in question slept in his vehicle while it was parked outside of his home.

He was also caught sleeping behind the wheel while parked on the side of the road.

Additionally, Fee found that two other officers went home for several hours during their shifts, leaving their cruisers running idle in the driveway.

Fee advised members of the Tupper Lake Village Board that each officer involved would receive an official warning. Mayor Mickey Desmarais said he considered the matter taken care of.

Westport man charged with cruelty WESTPORT — New York State Police arrested a Westport farmer last month and charged him with three counts of failure to provide proper animal sustenance.

Troopers arrested Joshua Warren, 26, of Napper Road in Westport in mid-January after reports from a local animal-control officer of alleged neglect to 50-plus head of cattle, several of which were discovered dead and others found to be severely malnourished.

A local veterinarian found that the deceased cattle had perished from malnourishment, along with not being provided fresh water in the freezing conditions.

Warren and others are currently working to restore the health of the cattle in question.

Audit reveals good news for NAC ELLENBURG — The recent school board meeting at Northern Adirondack Central School revealed the school is doing well fiscally, according to a yearly audit done by Seyfarth & Seyfarth CPAs P.C. According to the report, there was no misuse of funds and the district had a good fund balance.

Smoking banned from town park BEEKMANTOWN — Smoking is now banned at the town park in Beekmantown, voted on by the town council.

Signs will be posted around the park and playground behind the town hall, indicating a smoke-free area.

Camp saved by firefighters ALTONA — A camp owned by Dale Santor on Dulley Road was saved by firefighters Jan. 25.

The fire began around 7:20 p.m. with volunteer firefighters from Altona and West Chazy helping to put out the blaze in about a half hour. The camp was insured.

Saranac home saved from blaze SARANAC — The home owned by Sheila and Ronald Blair on Cringle Road caught fire Jan. 25, although firefighters quickly put it out with little damage to the home.

The Blairs, with their son Nathan, 18 and dog made it out safely. The house was insured.

Franklin County may look for lobbyist

By Chris Morris denpubs@denpubs.com MALONE — The Franklin County Board of Legislators is investigating the pros and cons of hiring a lobbyist to help the county secure federal funds for economic initiatives.

A representative from Murray, Montgomery and O’Donnell — a legislative advocacy firm based in Washington, D.C. — visited with lawmakers in Malone last week.

Kyriakos Pagonis told legislators his firm can develop relationships with insiders at federal agencies like the Department of Energy or the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Those partnerships, Pagonis said, can increase the likelihood that county grants will be approved.

Franklin County Manager James Feeley said the board is looking to see if there is help available at the federal level to maintain vital services that may otherwise be lost to state funding costs.

He said a lobbyist could also help overcome regulatory and bureaucratic obstacles in Washington.

Pagonis met with lawmakers last week at the urging of Tim Burpoe, who represents Franklin County Legislative District 7.

Burpoe has taken some heat for suggesting that the county investigate hiring a legislative advocacy firm.

Burpoe said a good legislator should seek more information on initiatives that could benefit the taxpayer.

“We haven’t decided whether we’re going to do it or not,” he said. “But I’d like to get as much information as possible so my fellow legislators can make an informed decision.”

James Feeley said a stronger voice in Washington could help the county when it comes to gaining radio frequencies from Canada to improve the Enhanced 911 system.

He said a lobbyist could also help gain waivers for programmatic expenses, like the 53-11 program that finances the capital acquisition of buses for public transporta-

tion.

“That involves 80 percent federal funding and a 20 percent county share,” Feeley explained. “If we could persuade regulators that Franklin County – because of its socioeconomic situation – should have its portion waived, that would maintain a vital county service and drive down costs.”

Feeley said projects like Patriot Hills at Saranac Lake could also benefit from a lobbying firm. But he notes that the county has made no decision and is merely investigating.

Burpoe said it’s worth learning the pros and cons of utilizing a lobbying firm.

“If we have to spend $40,000 on a lobbyist, but we generate $1 million in grants or funding, is it worth it?” he said. “Would it be worth it for $500,000? For $100,000?

Those are the questions we should be asking and assessing whether or not we want to take that chance.”

Burpoe said the county will entertain RFPs from legislative advocacy groups in order to ascertain how much it would cost to hire a lobbying firm.

In Clinton County Study to determine need almost complete jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Further expansion at Plattsburgh’s bustling International Airport is moving closer to reality.

Deputy county administrator Rodney L. Brown said a feasibility study approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is near completion which will determine if the projected number of passengers over the next 20 years will warrant an expansion of the airport terminal and its services. The study, which has been conducted over the last eight months, revealed the number of people who use the airport has grown steadily over the past three years. This year, more than 100,000 people are estimated to use the facility.

“The forecast more than doubles our enplanements in the next five years alone,” Brown said.

Though the study is not yet complete, the Clinton County Legislature is comfortable the results will be in favor of expanding the facility, Brown said, and has enlisted the services of engineering firm McFarland Johnson of Bing-

hamton. The firm is currently drawing up preliminary plans, which, as Brown stated, is more difficult than building a terminal “from scratch.”

“Because, now you have operations going on that are going to be disrupted,” Brown said. “And, you want to make sure whoever is going to be doing this design and overseeing the construction has enough expertise to make sure that the disruption is going to be minimized to the greatest extent possible.

The improvement project would expand the baggage carousel system, increase the number of Transportation Security Administration checkpoints from one to at least three, and roughly quadruple the number of ticket counters, of which there are currently three. The project would also add an additional jet bridge to help with the loading and unloading of passengers.

“We’re having a problem now when we’re getting two or three flights in at the same time that we can’t unload,” said County Legislator Robert W. Heins, R-Area 10, who chairs the county airport committee.

According to state police, Edward A. Brousseau, 82, was evacuated from his home at 1824 Peasleeville Road after emergency personnel responded to a call that came into Clinton County Fire Control at 2:41 p.m. Emergency dispatchers were contacted by Clinton County Highway Department personnel after a fire was discovered at Brousseau’s residence.

Responding fire departments entered the residence and discovered Brousseau lying on the floor. He was evacuated from the house, but was found deceased.

Clinton County Coroner David F. Donah responded to the scene, officially declaring his time of death at 4:15 p.m.

Brousseau was transported to CVPH Medical Center, Plattsburgh, by Brown Funeral Home where an autopsy was scheduled to be performed Feb. 1.

The home was declared a total loss.

City turns down grant PLATTSBURGH — The city of Plattsburgh councilors have turned down a $50,000 grant for a feasibility study of Wilcox Dock and Cumberland Bay’s development.

The city turned it down as they do not own the land and would have to match the grant amount. The land is owned by Sate Canal Corp.

Perez pleads guilty to DWI, grand larceny PLATTSBURGH — Howard Perez, 21, Rouses Point, pleaded guilty to DWI and fourth-degree grand larceny following a car crash in October.

Perez was arrested after he stole a car, drove drunk and crashed it shortly thereafter. Perez will now face up to three years in prison. Sentencing is March 11.

Plattsburgh International Airport could see an expansion project that could begin as early as next year. The Clinton County Legislature is currently awaiting results of a feasibility study for the project, which would require approval by the Federal Aviation Administration.

“That gets to be a problem,” he said.

Ultimately, plans will be influenced by the finals results of the study as the county will need to work with the FAA for both the design and how the project will be paid for, Brown said. The county already charges a $4.50 facility fee per passenger flying out of Plattsburgh International, he added, and receives federal funding — known as “entitlement money” — for having more than 10,000 passengers a year. Both, in addition to airport parking fees that will begin March 1, could help in

covering the cost of the expansion, which is expected to be anywhere between $10 and $20 million, said Brown.

The county will move forward with formal design plans once results of the feasibility study are in hand, Brown said. That process, which will include a required environmental impact assessment, will take the remainder of the year, depending on FAA approval, he added.

Construction would likely take another year.

“We’re probably looking at the beginning of 2013,” Brown said of the earliest an expansion could be completed.

Martha Burns, a neighbor of Brousseau for 22 years, said when she heard word of his death she was “flabbergasted.”

“I didn’t hear about it until I got home from work. I didn’t believe it,” she said.

Burns said she wasn’t close to Brousseau, but remembers watching him working in his garden, mowing the lawn or haying the fields.

“Every time I saw him I waved. He always waved back.

He was very friendly,” she said. “It’s really too bad.”

Burns said she knew Brousseau, a retired correctional officer from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, lived at the residence alone after his wife, Gladys M., passed away last April. Burns added she remembers Brousseau visited his wife regularly at Meadowbrook Healthcare in Plattsburgh, the nursing home where she resided until her death.

Another of Brousseau’s neighbors, who asked not to be identified, knew little about him, but called news of his death “tragic.”

“I would be walking and see him on his porch reading his paper,” the neighbor said, adding she had no interaction with him beyond that.

Clinton County fire investigators and state police have launched a joint investigation to determine the cause and origin of the fire.

Teen hits tree on Dumont Road BEEKMANTOWN — Kyle F. LaPorte, 18, West Chazy, suffered minor injuries following a car crash into a tree Jan. 25.

According to Plattsburgh-based State Police, LaPorte was driving on Dumont Road around 8 a.m. when he crossed into oncoming lane of traffic, veering off the road.

He complained about head pain, bought sought treatment at a local physician’s office.

Veterans cemetery still being considered PLATTSBURGH — Plans are in the works to have a veterans cemetery on Cumberland Head set up, although plans will have to be approved by the State Legislature.

Currently state funding is putting the project on the backburner as the state would have to provide the funds for maintenance and operation.

Residents may see power bill hike PLATTSBURGH — City of Plattsburgh residents using power from the Municipal Lighting Department may see an increase in their bill next month, due to the below zero temperatures from Jan. 23. MLD uses hydropower from the St. Lawrence River, but once the usage goes past 105 megawatts, the city has to look towards a more expensive source of power, such as nuclear, coal or gas.

Patinka died from blunt-force trauma DANNEMORA — Clinton County coroner David F. Donah has ruled the cause of death in a snowmobile accident that took the life of Patrick Patinka Jan. 22 to be blunt-force trauma.

The 49-year-old from Peru died after hitting a cluster of trees off Route 374.

Beer tent back for Fourth of July events ROUSES POINT — After a private party approached the village of Rouses Point, the Rouses Point Fourth of July Committee has decided to have the beer tent back for this year’s events.

The private party will purchase their own license, taking the liability off the village.

Two injured in snowmobile accident CLINTON — Two people were injured following a snowmobile accident that occurred in Clinton County over the weekend.

According to reports, two snowmobiles collided on a trail known as Rutland Way in the town of Clinton at about 10:50 a.m.

Saturday. Plattsburgh-based state police said 34-year-old Michelle L. Wells of Champlain and 40-year-old Stephen J. Harris were transported to the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh and treated for their injuries.

t appears the recent cold snap froze more than the water pipes in my home ... area lakes are buttoned up as well, like a fine Italian dress shirt.

The lower end of Lake Champlain and nearly all its bays are now fishable, as is the majority of Lake George. The smaller lakes are well frozen, though some are difficult to navigate because of snow and slush.

Popular fishing destinations like Lake Eaton, Long Lake, Raquette Lake, Indian Lake, Blue Mountain Lake, Eagle Lake, Paradox Lake, Brant Lake and Schroon Lake also hold fishable ice.

As a result, a handful of ice fishing tournaments loom in the region, including those in Tupper Lake, Saranac Lake, Schroon Lake, Hague and Pilot Knob.

The Northern Challenge — Feb. 5 TUPPER LAKE — Hundreds of fisherman from throughout the Northeast are expected to converge on Lake Simond this weekend for the Northern Challenge Ice Fishing Derby sponsored by the Tupper Lake Rod and Gun Club and the Adirondack Regional Federal Credit Union.

The only thing larger than the turnout for this great derby are the prizes, which range from two new four-wheelers to hourly cash awards of $800 for fish that are caught.

Entrants are encouraged to pre-register on Friday, Feb. 4 from noon until 10 p.m. at the Tupper Lake Rod and Gun Club located on Lake Simond Road, or anglers can register the day of the derby starting at 3 a.m. through the end of the day.

Fishing will take place during this catch-and-release tournament from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. and prizes will be dolled out at 4 p.m.

The Lake George Chinga-Classic — Feb. 19-20 PILOT KNOB — The popular Lake George Chinga-Classic, now in its 10th season, will have a new twist this year.

Northern Lake George Ice Fishing Tournament — Feb. 26-27 HAGUE — One of the region’s longest-running hardwater contests — the annual Northern Lake George Ice Fishing Tournament — will be held this year Feb. 26-27.

The event, now in its 52nd year, is sponsored by the Hague Fish & Game Club and chambers of commerce of Hague and Ticonderoga. The entry fee is again just $15 for the two-day event with kids under 16 and seniors over 65 fishing for free. The clinic will be offered Feb. 26 at 8 a.m. at the town beach in Hague, and equipment will be provided to the first 40 registrants.

Schroon Lake Fishing Derby — March 5-6 SCHROON LAKE — The Schroon Lake derby has also grown into one of the region’s largest with cash payouts in three categories and daily giveaways.

Fishing during this two-day event begins at daylight and ends at 4 p.m. Sunday. An awards ceremony will follow at the Schroon Lake Fish and Game Club.

Anglers can pre-register by mail or entry forms can be picked up at Flanagan’s, Bobcat Sports or the fish and game club through March 4. Late entries can also be made at Flanagans March 4, or at the fish and game club either day of the tournament.

The cost for all anglers, including children, is $12 through Feb. 27 and $15 thereafter. Three cash prizes will be awarded in the categories of trout, salmon and northern pike as well as a cash prize for heaviest pickerel and perch. Door prizes will be drawn hourly both days.

Community store to host open house SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake Community Store will be hosting an open house at the proposed site for the store, the former Corvo’s restaurant on Main Street, from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5.

The open house is an opportunity for members of the community, whether investors or not, to drop by, discuss our plans and, most importantly, to suggest product lines for the store to carry. Also, suggestions of sources for products, particularly USmade, will be welcomed. Board members will be on hand throughout the afternoon to answer any questions.

With some 600 investors already on-board, the capital-raising phase of this venture is close to a conclusion as we only need to sell another 200 or so shares, or about 4-percent of the minimum requirement, to begin operations. Accordingly, we have started discussions with Greg Moore, the owner of the building on Main Street, regarding leasing the property and have also started the search for key management staff. Once the threshold of $500,000 capital is reached the Interim Board will be able to enter into binding commitments to make this venture a success.
