denpubs@denpubs.com TUPPER LAKE — After years of public review, town hall meetings, mediation sessions and negotiations, the Adirondack Club and Resort project is entering its final phase.

An adjudicatory hearing will begin soon, possibly as early as next month, overseen by administrative law judge Daniel O’Connell.

When that hearing is finished, the Adirondack Park Agency will have 60 days to vote on whether the 600-unit resort should be given a permit.

But with the day of reckoning for the project drawing ever closer, some officials

ere's a little of the history behind the current brouhaha over whether nonresident property owners should be allowed to vote in school elections. I've already devoted the last two columns to the issue, but there are such strong feelings on both sides that I thought readers might appreciate a little recap.

New York State education law has traditionally been interpreted as requiring voters in school elections to have their primary residence in the school district. That interpretation has been challenged many times over the years, but so far those challenges have not been successful. The most recent such challenge was in 2008.

The most recent, that is, until five property owners in Westport decided to challenge it again late last year, after the school district turned down their requests for absentee ballots.

Since the people making the requests acknowledged that their primary residences are elsewhere, school officials believe that they were merely following the law in turning down the requests.

The part-time residents then petitioned the

state Commissioner of Education, which elicited a response from the district, then a response to the response by the petitioners, and (last week) a memorandum of law from the district.

Total costs so far to the school district: over $5,000, according to Superintendent Gallagher.

This is all complicated by the involvement in the petitions of some of the same people who have made the email circuit (and gone on public record) complaining about property taxes and calling for cuts to the school budget. However, they deny the suggestion that the current effort is part of an agenda to reduce the school budget or even do away with the school altogether.

So our little town is currently embarked on the larger stage of state politics. If the petitioners are successful, the implications will be sweeping—and not just for the state, but quite possibly for the nation at large, since most states require primary residency to vote in school elections. On the other hand, if they are turned down, life will go on pretty much as before — with just as much wrangling over the school budget, presumably.

his coming Saturday, Jan. 29 , Pok-OMacCready puts on its second annual Snow Festival, featuring contests, races, food, snow cones and inner tubing on one of the Adirondack’s oldest and finest tube runs. The activities start at 10 and run to 4; the cost is $10 per person, or $8 per person for groups of 4 or more.

Although the lecture series started last week, St. John’s Episcopal Church is hosting Thursday evening talks on the poetry of Robert Frost, given by Richard Eberle of Plattsburgh State. They start at 7:30 and will run each Thursday until Feb. 10.

Two weeks from now, on Feb. 5, the film society will show “The Kids Are All Right” at 7:30 in the spacious auditorium at the Willsboro school. This comedy got great reviews and won a couple of Golden Globe awards. The film society is more correctly called “Champlain Valley Film Society” but that’s a lot of typing and capitalizing, so please accept my shorthand.

Also on Feb. 5 , the Lakeside School is having a Winter Festival from 1 to 5 in the afternoon.

My fellow columnist, Colin Wells, asked last week about the idea of non-residents voting in local elections. I can see how you might want to vote locally if you have property and deep connections here, but no matter how much property you own, you only have one residence. I don’t think it’s a good thing to have people outside the community making community decisions.

Now for the science and nature part of the Essex scene, which this week is about lenticular clouds. Lenticular means lens shaped, and refers to clouds that form to the west of us, downwind from the Adirondacks. The clouds are oval and strongly resemble UFOs. Winds flowing high overhead are forced up by the mountains, where their water vapor condenses in the cooler air. The winds form wave patterns after crossing the mountains, with lens shaped clouds forming on the wave peaks. They are very common, and especially beautiful when lit by pink and orange light at sunset.

e are really into winter, snow, real cold weather, some of our major holiday’s are behind us and now all we have to do is enjoy. I need to send a reply to my friend Christine, Yes, for many of us winter is one of our great seasons. Regardless of the real cold weather we had a great turn out for this past Sunday’s service at the Willsboro United Methodist Church. A great worship group from Keeseville and Harkness came and conducted the praise service. This group is made up of adults and youth, with several youth playing instruments. It was wonderful and very meaningful the Psalms33 group is outstanding. Our Pastor celebrated his birthday on Tuesday, Jan. 25, some 45 of his congregation, fellow pastors and a few special friends came together at the Sportsman’s Diner for a supper meal together. We are most grateful to Darren Darrah for making this possible on a night when they are usually closed.

The New Beginnings group has the 2011 schedule available which outlines where we will meet each month this coming year. If you are interested in joining us give Janice Allen a call to get your copy. If you find the winter a time that you would like to get out with other

people, I remind you that a group of local quilters meet each Monday Morning at 10 a.m. at the Methodist Church to do handwork together.

They just enjoy getting together and do a variety of projects, for more information call Grace Uhlig 963 7015. We also note that a similar groups from the Bank meet once a month at the same church on Saturday and they are enjoying the space to spread out.

There seems to be a lot of sickness around the community, flu season is upon us, all are urged to be sure to have your flu shot. They are still available and it is not too late to get yours.

I am very proud of my son Larry Allen as he assisted a women that was involved in a car accident over in Vermont. He was on his work related run to pick up the supply of milk for Hood, when he came upon the accident. He could have moved on, but did not, instead stopped to lend a hand.

Confessions of a super genius

I

don’t want to insinuate that my academic performance in elementary school classified me as a super genius, so instead I’ll state it definitively: my academic performance in elementary school classified me as a super genius.

Just joking! At best, I was a mid-level genius — but that didn’t stop me from thinking I was the greatest mind this side of middle school. Nobody called me a genius, of course (that would have made the other students — the “normals,” if you will — feel inadequate), but I suspected my teachers revered my intellect the way ancient Egyptians revered the extraterrestrials who built the pyramids for them. Indeed, I imagined that my teachers donned robes and held torch-lit meetings in the faculty lounge to honor my brilliance by chanting, prostrating themselves before my life-sized cardboard likeness, and sacrificing small rodents.

Being a living legend, however, wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. By the time I reached fifth grade, the pressure to maintain my slightly above-average record had turned me into a neurotic misfit. Not only was I friendless — perhaps because I referred to myself in the royal “we” and called my classmates “plebeians” — I also lived in terror of getting a bad grade.

Imagine, then, the sense of soul-crushing doom I felt when I found a math test with a 57 scrawled across it in my class-

But it never came to bribery. No, I didn’t steal my teacher ’s grade book and switch my 57 to an 87, and no, I didn’t take my classmates hostage and demand a jet to fly me to Vietnam. When I looked at the math test again, I saw that it actually belonged to the student whose mailbox was above mine.

Elated, I put the test where it belonged and vowed never to see a 57 at the top of any of my actual papers. And I never did.

As my academic career progressed, I saw quite a few 63s, and even a handful of 42s, but never, thank goodness, a cursed 57.

The Inquest before Coroner White of Keeseville, found that Paul Shappy came to his death by a gun shot at the hands of Richard McElligott. McElligott was placed under arrest, and is now in the county jail 1880 Essex County Republican to await the action of the grand jury. It is amazing the far reaching results of the written word can bring great results.

This happened recently when I learned in our Willsboro United Methodist church of a most worthy project to assist a person with getting a free dialysis treatment with the turning in of 1,000 water & soda bottle caps.

I, being a correspondent for the Valley News and write the Willsboro news each week, put it in my column to take it one step further.

A local person Gail Drinkwine picked it up and took the request to her Square Dance Club members.

Then, one of the members from Chazy took it even one step farther. It just so happened that the Chazy community was so proud of their School sports teams winning the top awards this year. They were about to have a bottle drive to raise funds to put on a celebration for their teams. This group of Athletes, parents, and community members removed all the caps that came in for that drive to send to us. They filled a large plastic container filled with the caps.

This was a real snow ball effect all from the value of the written word in the newspaper. We are most grateful for their gift and taking the time to add their assistance to this project. Many, many thanks.

Also I being a Senior Citizen have not embraced the electronic age of twitter, face book, and etc. My source is still the good old newspaper, so I hope you never stop this form of communication.

When I was first asked to serve on the United Way Board of Directors, I was uncertain as to what assistance this Agency provided to our local residents.

United Way of the Adirondack Region is made up of Clinton, Essex and Franklin Counties. I was totally amazed to find that the fundraising done by the United Way each year helps to financially assist 36 partner agencies.

These partner agencies are there to provide assistance to many residents of these communities that are struggling through economic hard times, such as the working families that are seeing an increase in gas prices traveling to and from work, insurance increases, fuel costs, food expenses, etc, etc, etc.

And you have the elderly, who would go without before they ask for help.

Now, let me ask you a question - wouldn’t you want to know that there is an agency out there to help your children, your mother, your father, your family and friends?

Thoughts on prayers

S

o, here’s the thing, I am really sick and tired of people trying to tell me what I can and cannot do when it comes to my personal beliefs.

Where does this rant come from? Well, there have been letters and comments by the Essex County Board of Supervisors about whether they should be saying an invocation, or prayer at the beginning of their meetings.

The answer is simple — of course, they should.

Why shouldn’t they? Because someone thinks it infringes upon their either lack of belief or personal freedoms? Of course it doesn’t.

As a Christian, if anything, people advocating against having an invocation is infringing upon my personal freedoms.

Back in the day, Chris Jackson, aka Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, had a problem with the National Anthem.

You know what he did? Nothing.

When it was played, he didn’t stand. He did nothing. And you know, I have no problem with that whatsoever, because he felt that it was his right not to stand for something he did “not believe in.”

The same is true for anyone that doesn’t fell it is appropriate to have an invocation at the beginning of a board meeting. Do nothing. Don’t bow your head, don’t close your eyes, think about baseball or what you’re going to have for dinner instead of listening to the words, although I doubt anything is going to be said that makes you want to run screaming from the hall or make your ears bleed.

In short, if you don’t believe in prayer, don’t do it.

It’s just like the radio. When it comes to the “shock jocks” and Howard Sterns of the world, I don’t storm the palace, calling for them to be banned. There’s no need to take away someone's free speech because I

am morally offended. You know what I do? You got it, I do nothing.

By nothing, that means I don’t turn their station on, I don’t involve myself in conversations about their shows and what “wild and outlandish” thing they did this week. I don’t let my kids lisby Keith Lobdell ten to them while I have influence on them and hope that my example will lead them to do the same. So, my doing nothing makes them “nothing” in my world.

Why do people feel that everyone must enjoy the same things and that all prayers, speech and art must conform? They shouldn’t. I have heard all sorts of prayers from all sorts of people, and as far as I’m concerned, they’re all good ones.

Just because I don’t like what someone on the radio is saying doesn’t mean that someone else isn’t cracking up or really interested in that host’s political views.

In short, this push to censor and streamline is trying to turn us into robots with no sense of personal worth or thought, but rather making us a collective of ideas. Please stop it, because you’re not going to win.

So, when the county board says the invocation, I will bow my head, close my eyes and listen to what is being said. You can do nothing and my guess is you’ll be just as happy when it is over and there will be no lightning bolts coming from the skies because you didn’t listen.

Just do nothing.

E-town seeks Monday office help without clerk in Town clerk no longer working in the office on Mondays

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — The Elizabethtown town clerk will no longer be in the office on Mondays.

Deb Brooks has changed the hours that she will be at the town hall, now being in the office from Tuesday through Thursday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Previously, her office hours were Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The change was met with some concern at the Jan. 18 town board meeting.

“I would have rather known that this was happening before I got a notice in the mail,” councilman Ken Fenimore said. “I think that this change is something that

could have been brought to the board’s attention either before the letters were sent out or maybe during the budget process a couple of months ago.”

Town supervisor Noel Merrihew said he was concerned that there would be one less person in the office on a Monday.

“The phone is ringing and people are walking in all day on Mondays,” said Merrihew. “I am in and out of here throughout the day, and my secretary (Mary Sue Wilson) is here during the day, but she is very busy.”

Merrihew said the town could either advertise for a person who would be able to work on Mondays or use one of the deputy town clerks in the office on those days.

“I would be careful to advertise any new position if there is the chance that we have people who can already help,” town councilman Phil Hutchins said.

Brooks said she was cutting her days (the total number of hours in the office would decrease by two) because of personal and financial reasons.

“I think that she does a good job and I think that she should be getting more money then she does now,” town councilman Joe Martin said. “We have not given any elected position a raise in two or four years, and that includes the clerk’s position.”

Councilmen were cool to forwarding a motion made by Fenimore to look at reducing Brooks’s pay based on the reduction in hours.

“It’s a dangerous area to get into,” Hutchins said. “If we say now that her pay is less and all of the sudden she starts coming in Monday through Friday, isn’t it then reasonable that we would have to increase her pay?”

ETC seeks play proposals ESSEX — The Essex Theatre Company is seeking play proposals for reader’s theater for August and for the dark nights in July. They are planning to produce the rock opera/musical “Rent,” directed by Derrick A. Hopkins, on July 15-17, 21-24, and 28-31. People can choose any night, but these and at least two weeks prior as “Rent” will be in rehearsal.

People can submit proposals by e-mailing the name and author of the play, the number of male and female characters, a brief synopsis of the play, the dates you would like to see it performed, and the person’s willingness to direct it. Program addresses dating violence in schools

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — Melissa Estes knows that behavior is learned early.

Because of that, she is going around to local schools and talking about healthy dating relationships, about how to recognize unhealthy relationships and about how to identify when a relationship could lead to domestic violence.

“We want to help bring awareness to students in schools about relationship violence and healthy relationships and give them the chance to talk about what is going on around them,” Estes, who works with STOP Domestic Violence in Essex County, said. “We just started this program in Essex County is September and we have gotten a good response form the local schools.”

Estes said she has been in contact with every school in Essex County about the program and, so far, has delivered presentations at North Country Community College, Moriah, Ticonderoga, Lake Placid and Elizabethtown-Lewis Central Schools.

At ELCS, Estes talked with students in the 10th-grade health class taught by Rebecca Lewis.

“I think that domestic violence and violence in relationships is something that people sometimes overlook and don’t realize how much of an issue it is at all ages,” Lewis said. “In Essex County, we have amazing re-

“I think that it is very helpful,” sophomore Brody Hooper said. “It was a good, clear presentation that was helpful, especially if there are people who are scared and need to find someone to ask for help.”

“I have known a few people who have gone through problems like she brought up in the presentation,” sophomore Hannah Bender said. “This helps me to know how to handle things like this better now.”

Estes said that the program is based on programs that are currently being offered in Clinton County, and is available to middle school students through high school.

She added that while STOP Domestic Violence mostly works with adults, they realize that the same situations can present themselves in teenage and school relationships.

“We know that all these things that happen in adult relationships can also happen in relationships involving teens,” Estes said.

“When things get serious, you need to talk to someone about it, and we are just one of many places you can turn.”

Town hall looks to end flooding woes

WILLSBORO — The Willsboro town hall has an issue with water.

During the wet fall months, those using the building noticed that the cellar of the building was flooding, collecting water and leaving a residue on the floors.

“It’s hard to use it the way it is,” supervisor Ed Hatch said. “We want to get this all fixed up so we can use this for office space or records collection down the road.”

Hatch said the problem stems from the location of the roads that surround the building.

“Thy way that the water wants to flow, it

runs down towards Champlain National Bank and when it gets to the road, the water would rather come back then try to go through,” Hatch said. “The roads create almost a dam situation, and the ground water can’t get out.”

Hatch said the situation is not only at the town hall.

“They are having the same issues at the fire department,” Hatch said.

The supervisor added that the town has received help and recommendations from the department of soil and conservation.

“We are pretty much looking at the options now to see where we go,” Hatch said.

The basement currently houses the Willsboro and Essex food pantry.

PLATTSBURGH — Congressman Bill Owens was bumped from the Homeland Security Committee, but will continue to serve on the House Agriculture Committee and the Armed Services Committee for the 112th Congress.

Committee assignments were restructured after the Democrats lost control of the House.

PLATTSBURGH — The Progressive Coalition of Northern New York, formed earlier this month, protested Citizens United v.

Federal Election Commission, a Supreme Court decision that did away with limits on the amount of corporate and union money that can be donated to politician campaigns.

The protest was held in Saranac Lake, Malone, and Plattsburgh Jan. 21.

Town has no say on what’s next for destroyed Hubbard Hall

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — It’s all in the hands of the insurance companies now.

Elizabethtown supervisor Noel Merrihew said at the Jan. 18 meeting of the Elizabethtown Town Board the fate of what remains of historic Hubbard Hall in Elizabethtown is no longer something the town or county has a say in.

“I have met with multiple investigators and insurance people, and they all have said that it’s not our call anymore,” Merrihew said. “As soon as the property was deemed unsafe by the county and the state and county investigators have backed out because of the unsafe nature of the building, it is all in the hands of the insurance companies.”

Merrihew said he was responding to reports that the town would make a decision

on the hall at the meeting.

Merrihew said the insurance company representing the property owner will now use its own investigators to determine such things as the cause of the fire and when the structure will need be torn down.

“There is no action that can be taken by this town board that can override the insurance companies now,” Merrihew said. “The town cannot implement any action.”

Merrihew also took a moment to thank those who rallied to the aid of the community during the Jan. 11 blaze.

“We want to thank all the fire departments that came to help us out and all of the local businesses that helped by supplying food and coffee for the firefighters,” Merrihew said.

Other board action The town board also voted to keep the dog

licensing law from 1987, with changes to update the law to allow the town to be responsible for the licensing process. The amended law will go to a public hearing before the Feb. 10 regular board meeting.

The town voted to change their voice and data provider from Verizon to Westelcom for all town hall offices except for the courthouse because Westelcom service would not allow the court to continue to use its credit card machine.

The town awarded the winter fuel oil contract to Gordon Oil. The board entered into a contract, pending grant approval, to create two stormwater sediment basins located near the Sunoco Station and at Deep Hollow Pond.

The board voted to no longer allow persons to use the soccer field at the town park without the permission of the board. Several board members were concerned about the

condition of the field after the annual “Toilet Bowl” between Westport and Elizabethtown, which took place during a thaw and left large foot imprints and damage areas on the field.

“People are going to say ah, how bad could it be,” councilman Phil Hutchins said. “But that field is torn up.”

Jay woman facing assault/burglary charges PLATTSBURGH — Dorothy E. Kilburn, 29, Jay, is facing charges of thirddegree assault and second-degree burglary after she allegedly broke into a woman’s home and assaulted her, Jan. 14.

The victim suffered minor injuries but did not seek treatment.

AuSable Valley School District EXCELL project under way

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com CLINTONVILLE — It’s a project that involves three buildings with the goal of maintaining both the facilities and the education for students in the AuSable Valley Central School District.

The project, which is being funded through state aid and EXCELL funds, started this past summer and is anticipated to run through Sept. 1, 2012. It was approved by voters in 2007 and will not affect the school budget tax levy.

“This was funded by money that was kept by the state for schools that were in need of renovations and improvements but may not have had the money to fund them otherwise,” AVCS superintendent Paul Savage said. “It’s an exciting project that will take the school district into the next 30 years and beyond.”

“Our state aid ratio is 98 percent with this project, and the other 2 percent is covered by the EXCELL portion of the funding,” district business officer Scott Brow said.

Savage and Brow said that they were pleased that the voters approved the project in 2007 and that the community has been patient with the school as the work has commenced.

“We really want to thank the community for their patience along with the students and staff at the school,” Savage said.

The project comes with a price tag of $29,850,000 and includes renovations and additions at all three district school buildings.

A common piece of all three buildings will be the addition of new wood chip boiler plants at each site.

“Looking at our projections, we will be able to save between $100,000 and $120,000 with the boiler in terms of our heating costs,” Savage said. “That is a considerable amount of savings, and we wanted to make sure that anything we put into this project had the chance to provide the taxpayers in the district with a savings.”

A variety of other renovations are also taking place at the three school sites in the district.

Keeseville Elementary Savage said that the work at KES is the “least amount” of work in the entire scope of the project, but no less important when it comes to student safety and educational experiences.

“There is a two-classroom addition that is part of the project at Keeseville,” Savage said. “We are also re-organizing the parking lot with a sperate bus entrance.”

The school is adding a front entrance canopy, bleacher seating in the gymnasium and a remodeling of the kitchen area, along with the installation of a generator.

“The generator will be something that can support the school and the community as a emergency shelter if something like the ice storm were to happen again,” Savage said.

Au Sable Forks Elementary Work at AFES includes the addition of four classrooms, the addition of a stage and bleacher seating in the gymnasium and a rerouting of the parking and driveway area to help with student safety.

“The tightest space that we have in the district is there,” Savage said. “We are also pleased that we will be adding a stage and appropriate seating for school activities and athletic events there.”

AV Middle/High School Four classrooms are being added on to the current building to help address spacing issues at the school, along with the addition of a secure entrance and the renovation of the ramp and sidewalk area.

The project also calls for improvements to the flooring, ceiling and roof.

“The renovation work is more extensive than the addition work,” Brow said. “The big thing is that you are working with original parts of the building.”

Timeline Work on the wood chip boiler plants is expected to be completed in the spring of this year, while the project is scheduled to be wrapped by the opening of the 2012-13 school year.

“The realistic goal is that we are done with the work by Sept. 1, 2012,” Savage said.

Prayers to continue at county

By Jon Alexander denpubs@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — The practice of praying before the monthly meeting of the full Essex County Board of Supervisors will continue.

The regular – and markedly Christian – prayer sessions have been a tradition of the county board for decades. The practice has come under some recent criticism from a few local residents who argue it entangles a secular government with Christianity.

Gesturing to a placard in the 150-year-old board chambers reading “In God We Trust,” county Chairman Randy Douglas said Jan. 18 the monthly prayer is appropriate and thought provoking.

“I don’t think we’re crossing the line here. It’s one complaint,” he said. “If you don’t want to participate, don’t participate, but I don’t think we are doing anything wrong.”

The first to respond to the criticism of the monthly benediction, Moses said limiting the ability to pray would be an assault on basic Constitutional freedoms.

“My rights are as important as anyone else’s,” she said.

But Elizabethtown Supervisor Noel Merrihew argued that the monthly prayer could be more inclusive of other faiths.

“We could try to make it less denominational,” Merrihew said.

Multi-denominational benedictions regularly accompany federal and state events, including the annual State of the State and State of the Union addresses.

Earlier this month, Catholic and Jewish religious leaders offered prayers prior to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s State of the State address.

ACAP needs help to get into Pepsi top 10

Adirondack Community Action Programs HUGS Project is one of a number of community-minded projects that is seeking funding through the Pepsi Refresh funding program.

Currently, the ACAP program ranks 13th, and needs to get into the top 10 in order to be eligible for a $25,000 grant to help fund the HUGS Project, which provides swaddle sleepers for infants that help in the prevention of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

“We can’t seem to get off of 13,” Marge Garcia of ACAP said. “We would like to see a real push of people voting on the final weekend and I really believe that would help us get into the top 10.”

Voting runs through Monday, Jan. 31.

Garcia said the JCEO Feed the Hungry Program would benefit both the Elizabethtown and Keeseville food pantries that are run by ACAP. “This would be a benefit for both Essex and Clinton counties,” Garcia said. “We are extremely busy at both pantries this time of year.”

Throughout the year, the auxiliary holds various fundraisers. Donations to the auxiliary help the group purchase items that hospital managers aren’t able to include in departmental budgets. In 2010, the group raised more than $11,000, which purchased storage carts, furniture for the chemotherapy clinic, a flatscreen television for the new cardiac rehab program, and an audiometer for the hospital’s pediatrician so he can include hearing tests during pediatric exams.

In addition to equipment, the group awards an annual $500 scholarship, purchases holiday gifts for patients and stocks the emergency room with necessities for those who find themselves at the hospital unexpectedly and empty-handed.

Port Henry’s Fashion Corner marks 25 years in business

By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com PORT HENRY — The Fashion Corner has been selling gowns, dresses and more for a quarter century. The secret to its success?

“It’s supposed to be fun when you’re shopping for a special dress,” said Natalie Clark, Fashion Corner owner.

“You’re preparing for an important event, it should be enjoyable. We try to make it that way.”

Apparently Clark and her associates Jeanne Suddard and Candy Baker succeed.

“The girls always say ‘Thank you for letting us have fun’,” Clark said.

The Fashion Corner is marking its 25th anniversary in 2011.

Ida and Tom Ruch opened the boutique Nov. 26, 1985. Clark started work there the following April and Suddard a few months later. When the Ruchs moved in 1992, Clark bought the store.

“I enjoyed working here,” Clark recalled of her decision to buy the business. “When Ida and Tom wanted to sell it made sense to buy it. I still enjoy coming to work every day.”

While Fashion Corner customers are allowed — even urged — to have fun, there is more to the store’s success.

“We have a good reputation, word of mouth advertising is very good for us,” Clark said. “We have good customer service; we keep our prices very competitive; we keep up with current styles.”

While its located ina small town, the

Fashion Corner is big-time in the dress world. With an inventory of more than 500 prom gowns, more than 200 wedding dresses, more than 400 mother’s dresses, bride’s maid and flower girl dresses, tuxedos for men and more, the Fashion Corner attracts business from miles away.

“People drive three hours to shop here,” Clark said. “We sell dresses to people from Quebec, Potsdam, Albany, St. Johnsbury, Vt., all over. We have a very large selection, one of the largest.”

In 2010 the Fashion Corner sold 292 prom dresses and 100 wedding dresses.

The Port Henry store is now serving second and third generation customers.

“I sold a prom dress last week to a

girl,” Suddard said. “I sold her mother a prom dress years ago.”

Customers have changed in the last 25 years, Clark and Suddard agree.

“People are different, they expect more,” Clark said. “Most know, or think they know, exactly what they want when they walk through the door.

They’ve been on-line and seen all the styles.”

But while people expect more, they’re still a joy to service, Clark said.

“In the 25 years we’ve had maybe two ‘bride-zillas’,” she said. “Most people are fantastic.”

Spring is busy at the Fashion Corner because of proms and weddings. To accommodate customers the shop is now open on Sundays through May. Fashion Corner customers can be

sure they’ll see the latest styles at the Port Henry store. Clark makes regular trips to fashion shows in New York and reads fashion magazines to keep up with the latest trends. She also regularly asks her customers, particular teenage girls, what they like.

A tribute to the Kozmas: recollections of a Wadhams kid David Pratt denpubs@denpubs.com

Recently my brother, Mike, called to say that he was going to Joe Kozma’s estate auction when it dawned on me — with first Ethel and then Joe’s passing, a remarkable era had finally come to an end.

We moved to Wadhams in the spring of 1946 and beyond my immediate family, Ethel Kozma was the first person I can recall. It was summer Bible school at the Congregational Church, and the children were singing hymns. This youngster must have looked puzzled (or scared) because Ethel quickly came to my side and showed me how to follow the music to “This is my Father ’s world” — it is still my favorite hymn!

It would take me years to fully realize how closely linked the Kozmas were with the village of Wadhams and what an impact they had on the community. They were part of the glue that held the Congregational Church together and never sought any recognition. For several summers Ethel drove a carload of us to the Church Camp at Medusa, always making sure that we had time enough to stop at Stewart’s Ice Cream where you could ‘make your own sundaes’ — what a treat for a kid from the farm that didn’t even know what a ‘sundae’ was. Christmas pageants at church were always special with Ethel arranging suitable programs and making sure everyone knew their lines. But, I am getting ahead of myself.

One of the most memorable events for me occurred in the late 1940s when my parents had the opportunity to take an out-of-town trip. My brothers and I were sent to stay with family and friends and it was my good fortune to stay with the Kozmas. By the time I awoke the first morning Ethel had already taken Joe to meet his ride to work at the Republic Steel mines and packed her car with lunch and fishing tackle. It was a warm spring day — Lake Champlain was high from winter runoff, and Ethel knew exactly where to set up our fishing spot as the swollen lake came up to meet the Crown Point bridge road. She showed me how to bait a hook and set the plastic bobber at just the right height. Together we proceeded to catch was seemed like a hundred “Pumpkin Seeds” and I wondered what we would do with all these fish. The answer was soon obvious — a short drive to Joe’s parents home in Witherbee where we cleaned and prepared fish for their extended family. At shift change Ethel took me to pick Joe up, and I watched in awe at the head of the mine shaft as the skip brought the men back up above ground. Joe said when I was older, he would take me down in the mine — but, the occasion never arose. How I wish I could have done that! We stayed at the Kozma parents until evening and I marveled at how the older generation still spoke in their native language.

The 4-H club was an important part of our

lives and we had our own chapter — The Three Corner Boys — I chose woodworking as one of my projects and soon discovered another of Joe Kozma’s specialties. He opened his personal workshop to us once a week where we could craft useful items from wood.

Joe was the most patient instructor, never showing frustration or disappointment, although I am sure we gave him reasons for both. At the same time, Ethel was helping Emily Pierce on Saturday mornings with the girls 4-H group to teach sewing and other homemaking skills.

Looking back, the church was probably the most important part of Joe and Ethel’s lives, followed closely by their affiliation with the Wadhams Grange. Later in life, they would be honored by the community for over 50 years of service to both organizations. When the church was still fired by an enormous wood furnace, it was often Joe who would get up early Sunday morning and have the building warm for everyone to enjoy. He worked tirelessly helping to install fluorescent lighting and sound equipment that is still in use today.

Together they spearheaded a successful effort to have the church listed on the National Register of Historic Places. With Joe’s support I was able to get the job of janitor and, in the winter, lighting the stoves at the Grange Hall on meeting nights while I was in High School.

Not everything the Kozmas tried ended in success, however — the demise of the local Post Office was rumored and seemed likely.

Although they valiantly tried to save this landmark that had served the community for over a hundred years, Wadhams, NY 12990 yielded to government pressure and quietly vanished.

As many kids from the area do, I moved away after High School and could only return for occasional visits. As time allowed, I would call on the Kozmas to catch up on local news - Ethel was the local newspaper correspondent for many years. On one of these visits, Ethel enlisted both of our children in the church’s Christmas pageant. After our return home, she wrote to the children “…Thanks again for your participation in Wadhams UCC Christmas 1980. Your candlelighting was so dignified, that it added much for the inspiration and spirit of the service for all of us.”

Ethel and Joe were so thoughtful, always remembering us with special hand-written Christmas cards — this coming season will be the first year without one — and, it won’t be the same.

In looking back, I am thankful for the many ways in which the Kozmas touched my family’s lives. They were best friends with my parents, my mother and Ethel were childhood friends — so this literally lasted a lifetime.

They both gave me valuable mentoring, taught by example. The community certainly understands what a loss they have suffered with the passing of these two wonderful people and one can only hope that their legacy of selflessness and service will be honored and treasured forever.

Everything is pretty much set to go for the 2011 Saranac Lake Winter Carnival, which will run from Friday, Feb. 4, through Sunday, Feb. 13.

“We start getting excited for this right after last year ’s event when we start thinking of the theme for the next carnival,” Adrienne Relyea of the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce said. “We are pretty much just getting the ducks in a row right now.

Everyone knows their jobs and things are running smooth.”

The Carnival, which celebrates its 114th anniversary this year, will feature plenty of events that families and tourists have come to love, along with a couple of “new traditions.”

“We are going to have an icicle-growing contest as part of the Carnival this year,” Relyea said. “It will be held at Riverside Park, so people should start growing their icicles now and make sure they figure out a way to get them to the park for judging.”

Another event will remember a local student who passed away in 2010, with the Casey McHugh Pond Hockey Tournament set to take place starting at 11 a.m. on Feb. 13 at the Bloomingdale rink behind the firehouse.

“We had a pond hockey tournament in the past, and this is a touching and nice way to bring the event back and it is a meaningful event for a lot of people here,” Relyea said.

The festivities actually get started a day earlier than the Coronation ceremony, traditionally the official beginning of Winter Carnival, with the 12th annual Past Royalty mixer and dinner starting at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 3 (place TBA).

Events on Sunday, Feb. 6 will be the White Stag Downhill Ski Races at the Mount Pisgah Ski Center at 11 a.m.; the Arctic Bar-B-Que from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Mount Pisgah; an ultimate frisbee tournament from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Petrova Athletic Fields; and a 9pin no-tap bowling tournament at Romano’s Saranac Lanes from 2 to 5 p.m.

Several events will happen at 7 p.m. on Monday. Feb. 7, including a classic film viewing sponsored by the Saranac Lake Classic Film Festival; an interfaith celebration service at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church; bingo at the Saranac Lake Adult Center; and firemen’s broomball at the Saranac Lake Civic Center. SARANAC LAKE — On Saturday, Jan. 29, at 7:30 p.m., “Land of the Great White Bears,” a slide presented by photographer Gerry Lemmo will be shown at Saranac Village at Will Rogers. This program will showcase the remote region of North America along the shore of Canada’s Hudson Bay and explore the isolated village of Churchill, where polar bears reign during the brief autumn season.

Gerry Lemmo's photographs have been featured in many books, calendars and magazines including National Geographic, Adirondack Life and Adirondack Explorer. He has also worked with the National Audubon Society, International Paper, The Nature Conservancy, General Electric, the San Diego Zoo, The London Times and the National Wildlife Federation. Gerry has visited six continents and has a collection of over 70,000 photographs; some which have been seen in over twenty countries.

New Progressive coalition plans to be heard on the local scene

By Chris Morris denpubs@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — A new political group aims to make an impact here in the North Country, and they’ll start by holding a coordinated protest of last year ’s Supreme Court decision regarding Citizens United and the Federal Election Commission.

The Progressive Coalition of Northern New York formed following a Jan. 7 meeting in Beekmantown, during which citizens from Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties gathered to establish an organization pro-

moting political reform in the North Country and beyond.

Officials with the group say it’s the first tri-county union of progressive citizens to take shape in 20 years.

Jeanne Norris is spokeswoman for the Progressive Coalition of Northern New York.

She said that splinter groups of progressives were working separately before the coalition came together.

“We were working separately in very small groups and realized that we’d have a better voice in the area if we were one larger group,” she said.

According to Norris, the new coalition will organize citizens throughout the region in order to promote what she called – quote – “democratic values and advocate for economic and social reform.”

She adds that the group will attempt to integrate and network itself with like-minded state and national organizations.

The progressive coalition draws largely from the Democratic Party, Norris notes, but also includes constituents from the Green Party and the Working Families Party.

Howard Dean’s “Democracy for America” organization is a heavy influence for coali-

tion members, Norris adds.

“Progressively speaking, we of course are for no war,” she said. “We’d like to see an increase in progressive thinking in this area, even in regards to job creation. We’d also like to help the area move forward.”

The coalition supports universal health care, education reform, fair trade, protecting Social Security, and promoting human rights abroad — among a bevy of other issues.

Norris says the coalition will not endorse political candidates as a group, but will support politicians that shares similar views and oppose those who reject them.

DEC to close Ray Brook dispatch station

Pendragon continues ‘Dracula’ tour SARANAC LAKE — Since early December, Pendragon Theatre has been touring its production of “Dracula” for both school and public audiences. To date the production has toured to Malone and Franklin Academy, Lowville Academy, Glens Falls, Chateaugay and the Lake Placid Center for the Arts. Other performances are upcoming: ■ Lisbon Central School on Feb. 1 ■ SUNY Potsdam for school and public performances on Feb. 4 and Feb. 5.

■ SUNY Plattsburgh on Feb. 10 for school and public audiences

■ As part of the Saranac Lake’s Winter Carnival there will be one performance on Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m.

■ Tannery Pond in North Creek on Feb. 25 ■ Arts Center Old Forge for school and public performances on March 1.

Some performances in the St Lawrence, Lewis and Jefferson counties are supported in part by a grant from the Northern New York Community Foundation.

RAY BROOK — The state Department of Environmental Conservation aims to officially close down its dispatch office in Ray Brook by the beginning of next month.

DEC spokeswoman Lori Severino said all seven dispatchers currently stationed in Ray Brook will be moved to the new Albany office over the course of the next six months.

Four of those dispatchers will be gone by Feb. 1, Severino said.

Plans have been in the works for several years to move DEC dispatch services to Albany, Severino added. She notes that officials have long expressed a desire for one centralized dispatch center. The Albany office opened in 2008.

“As of Feb. 1, four of the employees from Ray Brook will be moving to Albany, then there will be three left for the pilot portion of it — just to make sure everything runs smoothly,” Severino said. “The hope is that within the next six months, the last three dispatchers will be given the opportunity to move to Albany if they so choose. But the Ray Brook dispatch center will be closing.”

Day-to-day operations at the DEC Region 5 offices in Ray Brook will not be affected by the closing of the dispatch center, Severino says.

“The regional office will still be there,” she said. “People can still call Ray Brook

during regular business hours. But the 24/7 dispatch operations will be all out of Albany, then they’ll radio out to whatever region they get calls from.”

According to Severino, the state is looking to save money through the consolidation of dispatching services.

She noted DEC will utilize Radio Over Internet Protocol to manage dispatch calls.

“Ray Brook was using an older system, so we won’t have to continue maintaining those old systems,” Severino said. “Everyone will be located out of the one unit and we won’t need staff in separate offices. It will save money.”

DEC has suffered repeated cuts due to New York’s ongoing fiscal crisis. Severino said this is just one of many steps taken by DEC officials to cut costs and save money for the state.

Historic Saranac Lake gets grant SARANAC LAKE — Historic Saranac Lake was recently awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Preservation Assistance Grant. The grant will support the services of a professional consultant and the purchase of storage materials for the HSL collection.

Historic Saranac Lake houses a collection of letters and manuscripts, photographs and objects pertaining to the early scientific research of tuberculosis and care of patients.

The United States Freestyle Ski Team of Ryan St. Onge, Heather McPhee, Bryon Wilson and Emily Cook took time away from their training while in Lake Placid to visit with sixth-graders at Lake Placid Middle School about the sport of freestyle skiing and to answer the students’ questions. The athletes competed as part of last week’s Nature Valley Freestyle World Cup stop in Lake Placid and Wilmington.

LAKE PLACID — Vancouver Olympian Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid) turned in his second best-ever career performance during Thursday’s, Jan. 20, 10 km World Cup biathlon sprint competition held in Antholz, Italy.

On his way to a 12th place race result, the two-time Olympian clocked a time of 24 minutes, 24.9 seconds. Bailey was strong in both components of the race, shooting and skiing. He was the second fastest shooter and the 10th fastest skier.

Bailey’s teammate, Tim Burke (Paul Smiths), also turned in a strong showing, placing 34th in a time of 24:59.8 Bailey’s Thursday finish also qualified him for Saturday’s, Jan. 23, men’s 15 km mass start competition, where he recorded a 22nd place result and a time of 37:32.8.

This was the first time that any U.S. skier had qualified for a mass start race this season.

Third Age Adult Day Services Northern Challenge set for next Saturday on Lake Simond in TL of Elizabethtown Providing a Safe, Social Environment for Elders with Memory Impairment, Frailty or Loneliness.

TUPPER LAKE — Fishermen from all over the country will travel to Tupper Lake next weekend to participate in the Northern Challenge Ice Fishing Derby on Lake Simond.

The annual ice fishing event will take place Saturday, Feb. 5, from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m., and is co-sponsored by the Tupper Lake Rod and Gun Club and the Adirondack Regional Federal Credit Union.

Dave McMahon of the Rod and Gun Club said the prizes associated with the event continue to get bigger.

“The payout for everything last year was just a little better than $35,000,” McMahon said. “This year, we are giving away two four-wheelers, and $800 in prizes every hour for fish that are caught.”

Hourly prizes will include a $500 award for the largest fish caught in an hour, $200 for second place and $100 for third place.

“This is a day-long catch-and-release tournament,” McMahon said. “The fishing will go until 3 p.m. and the awards will be

“We will take around 1,200 entries for the event,” McMahon said. “We get people as far away as Colorado coming to the event. I have one person registered from there ... and people from Massachusetts, Vermont and New Jersey.”

McMahon said registration tickets are good for the door prizes and four-wheeler drawing.

“The only thing that you would have to pay for other than the entry fee is the 50/50 raffles that are done by the Tupper Lake Dive Team, the Tupper Lake Volunteer Fire Department, the Rod and Gun Club, the Tupper Lake Archers and the Adirondack Leathernecks,” McMahon said.

PAUL SMITHS — Officials from the Malone, Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake area chambers of commerce convened in Franklin County yesterday to unveil a series of initiatives aimed at bolstering the regional economy.

The meeting brought together representatives from local government, the Franklin County Board of Legislators, and even an aide from Congressman Bill Owens’ office.

Hugh Hill is president of the Malone Chamber of Commerce. He said the economic downturn has forced local chambers to get creative in order to promote their member businesses.

That, Hill said, means working together toward a common goal.

“Together, our organizations represent nearly one thousand members – it’s the largest business organization in the county,” he said. “We’ve grown to understand that it’s our duty, our obligation, and our pleasure to work for common goals by forming this and other regional partnerships, increasing our effectiveness and our reach.”

gional partnerships led directly to the creation of the Franklin County Chamber Alliance.

According to Sylvie Nelson, executive director of the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, the notion that there’s strength in numbers rings true with this new coalition.

She said pooling resources and supporting neighboring chambers of commerce offers great advantages when it comes to stimulating the North Country economy.

“When we speak as one voice, it’s loud,” Nelson said. “When we speak as two voices, it’s louder. When we speak with all three voices – that sends the message.”

Nelson told a crowd of more than 30 people that the Franklin County Chamber Alliance will support a variety of economic initiatives in each community – that includes infrastructure rehabilitation in Tupper Lake, incubator projects for agriculture and artisan products in Malone, and even a convention center in Saranac Lake.

Generally speaking, Nelson says the focus will be on bringing dollars into Franklin County through investments in public works projects and tourism.

Conversation yesterday ranged from a dark skies initiative in Tupper Lake to the marketing of potatoes for vodka in the town of Brighton.

But one issue stood out in particular: a push to establish an occupancy tax in Franklin County, which is currently one of only two counties statewide that doesn’t charge a tax on hotel rooms.

Backers of an occupancy tax – sometimes referred to as a bed tax – say the additional revenue would go directly toward marketing efforts in Franklin County.

Neighboring Essex County collects 3 percent of a room’s total cost, which amounts to more than one million dollars annually. Ninety-five percent of that money goes to the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism for destination marketing.

Statewide, the bed tax is closer to 4.5 percent.

Nelson says the benefits of enacting an occupancy tax are real – but convincing lawmakers to approve a new tax could be a daunting task. She

adds, though, that hotel owners have been supportive.

“They’re the ones that will be burdened with taking that tax,” Nelson said. “People need to understand that we’re one of two counties in the state that doesn’t collect this tax. These other counties take these funds and reinvest it in the tourism industry – you get clear results from that.”

When the chamber alliance first proposed a bed tax earlier this month, Franklin County Legislator Paul Maroun said it wasn’t a top priority for county lawmakers.

But his colleague, Tim Lashomb, sang a different tune Wednesday.

“We see the struggles that we’re facing right

now,” he said. “Tourism is probably one of our biggest assets that we have in Franklin County.

We need to promote it more and we’re more than willing to do it. The legislation has to be done first, and that won’t come too quickly. I think you can be assured that what you’re talking about, we’re on the same page.”

Hill from the Malone chamber says hospitality businesses in northern Franklin County understand the need for an occupancy tax.

“Most of our hospitality businesses understand the value of tourism and want to see more of it,” he said. “Tourism is an easy sell.”

Early figures estimate that Franklin County could draw about $300,000 in revenue, but Nelson stressed those numbers are not set in stone.

“I don’t think there are any questions on the table,” he said. “Other than those that the opponents raise reflexively.”

That view is shared by Jim LaValley, a realtor in Tupper Lake and founder of the group ARISE, which formed to support this project. He says the resort is well-designed and will serve as a much-needed boost for his town’s economy.

“And I remain very optimistic that this project will be hitting the market at just the right time,” LaValley said.

But environmental leaders are saying the project still needs dramatic restructuring.

John Caffrey is an attorney in Glens Falls who sits on the board of Protect the Adirondacks. He’ll serve as counsel for the group during the upcoming hearings.

“It’s not close and based on what we’ve seen so far, the chances of the applicant ever agreeing to anything that we feel would be acceptable and would be consistent with the Adirondack Park Agency Act are extremely low,” Caffrey said.

Groups like the Adirondack Council say they support the project in theory, but still have issues with the application. Concerns expressed by environmental organizations include the design of the sewage treatment system and plans for housing developments along the slopes of Big Tupper.

LaValley says green groups are meddling in Tupper Lake’s future, without thought to the community’s economy.

“The environmental groups, the individuals who are again opposed either partially or in whole, to be honest with you need to be ashamed at the tactics they’re using right now to keep this project from moving on a timely schedule,” he argued.

Interestingly enough, both sides of the issue are heaping praise on the APA and its staff. Green group and supporters of the ACR project say the APA has handled its review of the project fairly. Here’s Jim LaValley: “The Adirondack Park Agency has been nothing but professional with this project,” LaValley said. “They’ve been very clear with what the steps are. Their rules are laid out so the applicant knows what they are.”

The discovery phase that led up to the adjudicatory hearing closed last Friday. The hearing itself could begin as early as next month. The testimony and the evidence offered into the record is expected to be highly technical and contentious.

Continued from page 1 are expressing concern that the final vote will be rushed through – even though the project has been in the works for some seven years now.

“I think it would be extremely unfortunate if when that time comes, we are put under any time pressure,” he said. “I really don’t want to see after four years of waiting to be told there is a time clock running and you have to fish or cut bait. Given the importance of this thing, I think we need plenty of time to consider whatever is finally put before us.”

That concern was echoed by Commissioner Frank Mezzano, who recalled being buried with information at the last minute when voting on other large and complex projects.

“The sheets of paper came in boxes, regular file big boxes that we had to somehow plow through,” he said.

The APA’s deliberations will be complicated by the fact that commissioners have been instructed to limit the amount of information they’re gathering from the media about the Big Tupper resort – so that their decision will be based on the official record produced by the hearing.

They also can’t deliberate amongst themselves ahead of time.

One more wrinkle is that many of the commissioners on the APA board weren’t around when this project was first introduced. Here’s board member Lani Ulrich: “The members at the table now are dramatically different now than the members who were here when this first came before us,” she said.

The 60 day clock required under APA regulations for a final decision could be extended. But that could only happen with the consent of the developer, Michael Foxman, who’s seeking the permits.

Foxman says he’s not sure whether he would agree to an extension, but he acknowledged that the time clock might make it difficult for some commissioners.

“It seems to me that the board has the staff and the staff has total knowledge and will make a careful recommendation,” he said. “If I were a new board member, I might need more time or I might depend on the staff. It will depend on the circumstances.”

Ode to a tiny green tree frog I

have a tiny green tree frog and it brings me luck.

Laugh if you like, but it’s true.

In fact, the tiny green tree frog of which I speak has had mystical powers since it was first bestowed upon me by my daughter at the tender age of three.

I discovered the little plastic replica jammed between two seat cushions in my pickup, in between a candy wrapper and a wad of discarded Gummy Bears.

“Sweetheart, you forgot your toy,” I said, holding out the dimesized frog to her as she disembarked her flowered car seat.

She took it, turned it slowly in front of her face, then offered it back.

“I want you to have it, Daddy,” she said sweetly, her long eyelashes batting away beneath a woolen winter cap like Cindy Lou Who from Dr. Suess’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

If that sequence of events doesn’t bestow mystical power on an inanimate object, I’m not sure what will.

So, I slipped the tattered tiny green tree frog into a front shirt pocket and plopped a kiss on my precious daughter ’s forehead.

“I shall cherish it forever,” I told her, not fully compre-

hending the complete significance of the statement.

From that moment forward, the luck emanating from that tiny green tree frog has been nothing short of miraculous.

Because of its near supernatural abilities, however, I have saved the tiny green tree frog’s mystical power for only the specialist of occasions.

Like hunting season.

Oh, and brook trout season.

And there was that one golf tournament with my Dad, but I am sworn to secrecy on that so as to uphold the sanctity of the match.

Anyway ... the tiny green tree frog began proving its mystical amphibian powers the very first hunting season I carried it.

The year was 2006, and I entered deer season with no more expectation than any other year. I had failed to consider, though, one serious ace in my corner. Or, more aptly, a shirtpocket hitchhiker in the form of a tiny green tree frog.

As luck would have it, the season turned out to be my best ever, starting with a slammer 140-class 11-pointer I shot with my muzzlestuffer.

I would put a lot more bucks on the carpet over the years with that tiny green tree frog in my shirtpocket, the most recent being the monster 8-pointer I shot in Manitoba this year.

The frog brought similar luck on the ponds, affording me several four and even a few five-pound class brookies.

Ramblin’ on ice and snow

L

ast Monday morning, Saranac Lake again earned a mention in the national news for achieving a temperature of 36 degrees F below zero.

Unfortunately, on that particular day, International Falls, Minnesota, at 37 degrees F below was the coldest spot in the country.

Some folks didn’t understand, but having a reputation for being the Nation’s Icebox, holds a special honor among many communities located along the continental ice belt.

“In Saranac Lake this morning, customers

flocked to the local diner, and begged the waitress to spill scalding hot coffee on their laps!”

Although Saranac Lake persistently ranks among the coldest spots in the nation, Old Forge actually has the record for attaining New York state’s biggest chill, where on Feb. 18, 1979, local thermometers registered a stunning 52 degrees F below zero.

The Adirondacks have long been considered a land of extremes, where the winters are colder, the snow is deeper, and ice persists far longer than it does in other comparable locales.

All he got, though, was a backside full of rock salt. I knew teaching her to shoot would come in handy someday.

Lucky for me, it was after we parted ways.

But, back to the lucky frog.

I’m not sure how the tiny green tree frog first landed in my daughter ’s possession.

Perhaps it was once an enchanted galleon passed from generation to generation, originating in the time of powerful witchcraft and sorcery, of King Arthur and Camelot.

Too much of a stretch, you think?

Well, more likely it has something to do with the fact that I’ve carried it with me during almost every outdoor pursuit since my daughter gave it to me five years ago.

I do know one thing, though.

It definitely has more mystical power than those foolish water wings.

Today, in nearly any mountain community, there’s often somebody who can show you the way to local ‘ice caves’, where winter’s accumulation regularly lasts all year ‘round.

In my youth, I often explored ice caves located at the base of Cobble Hill in Elizabethtown, where even in mid-summer; the cave’s floor remained covered with a thick black ice.

It is not uncommon to find ice caves in places like Indian Pass, the Lower Ausable Lake, the Cascades and Pitchoff. Ice Cave Mountain is located in the southern Adiron-

dacks and the ice caves on Chimney Mountain in the Siamese Ponds Wilderness are very well known.

In the Adirondacks, it is generally accepted that our summers are shorter, typically arriving by the Fourth of July 4th and departing by the end of the week. Often, folks don’t even realize there has been a change of season until the spectacular fall foliage arrives on July 6th.

“It was so cold in Saranac Lake last night, that people wondered why we didn’t just open a nearby hydrant and let the Ice Palace build itself,” volunteer palace builder.

Embrace the chill, it’s the only sure way to warm the winter’s atmosphere.

Long wait rewarded as Two-division play returns to the MVAC Rascoe nets bucket

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com WESTPORT — When the coach calls your name for the first time, it can be a thrilling and exciting experience, especially if it’s the first time in two years that you’ve heard that name come from the coach’s mouth during a game.

For Westport Central School District senior Molly Rascoe, that time came during a Jan. 21 girls varsity basketball game against Crown Point, as she entered her first game since kidney disease and the subsequent transplant surgery.

“I was very excited, I was not nervous at all,” Rascoe said about the moment she got to check into the game against the Lady Panthers. “I was cleared the Friday before that to just shoot around and stuff like that, but Molly Rascoe drives to the basket in her then I asked my first varsity action in two years.

“She got the okay that morning and we mentioned it to Hokey (McKinley, head varsity girls basketball coach), but I didn’t know if she was even going to get the chance to play,” said Brad Rascoe, Emily’s father and athletic director at Westport. “He got her in, and it was great.”

The appearance in a varsity basketball game marked Rascoe’s first action since her sophomore year.

Those in the stands quickly realized what was happening and welcomed Rascoe back to the Lady Eagles’ basketball court with a warm ovation.

“It was pretty good,” Rascoe said about entering the game and hearing the crowd’s reaction.

“The crowd was really supportive of her,” said Brad Rascoe.

As for the chance to dress with the rest of her teammates, Rascoe stated simply, “I liked it.”

Rascoe not only got the chance to play but also scored two points.

“I drove to the basket and I lost it,” Rascoe said about the beginning of the play, then recounting each person that touched the ball until it was in the hands of Willa McKinley.

“Willa passed it to me and I just went to the basket and I just made it,” Rascoe said.

“I know mom (Julie) was thinking no contact. I was thinking the same thing, but I also saw that she had the lane. It was an exciting and nervous night.”

WILLSBORO — The days of threedivision format in the Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference (MVAC) will soon be a memory.

The MVAC will return to a two-division format with the coming 2011-12 season, with the exception of the fall soccer season, which will be part of the new merged league between the MVAC and Champlain Valley Athletic League (CVAC).

“It will be a little different than before, but we are going back to the twodivision format,” said Steven Broadwell, Willsboro Central School Superintendent and President of the MVAC.

“There has been a lot of compromise and a lot of forethought that goes into the scheduling of the season and in the decision to go back to the two-division league.”

In basketball, Division I will include Lake Placid for boys, along with Chazy, Willsboro, Westport, Elizabethtown-Lewis and Schroon Lake. Division II would include Crown Point, Indian Lake/Long Lake, Keene, Johnsburg, Minerva-Newcomb and Wells.

During baseball and softball season, Crown Point would jump from Division II to Division I. Teams would play two games versus division opponents and one game versus the non-divisional teams for a 16game regular season schedule in bas-

ketball and a 13 games regular season schedule in baseball and softball.

Broadwell said that part of the change came from declining school enrollments forcing the elimination of some programs by schools.

“When you have only two schools with a team in a division, then that’s really not a division,” Broadwell said.

“This change was a necessity based on the fact that we had schools that were not fielding teams.”

Broadwell said that the league is still looking at whether or not they would continue the practice of having a league championship game.

“Overall, the changes we have made have been good for the MVAC schools collectively,” Broadwell said.

Riley closes in on 1,000 as Blue Bombers beat Red Storm

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — In a season that has seen her set records and help lead the Lake Placid Lady Blue Bombers toward the top of the CVAC standings, Megan Riley put on another strong showing Jan. 19.

Against the Lady Red Storm of Saranac Lake, Riley recorded an impressive triple-double, scoring 29 points to go with 14 rebounds and 12 blocked shots in a 42-27 victory.

“They played a tough game,” Bombers coach Frank Johns said about the game. “There were times that we were unorganized, but we pulled it together in the second half.”

The Bombers used their height to their advantage, pulling down 41 rebounds — 18 offensively — while holding the Red Storm to just five offensive boards.

Lake Placid also used their height to throw off the timing of the Red Storm offense.

“My kids said that the beginning of the game that they were concerned about Lake Placid’s post defense,” Red Storm head coach Trish Wickwire said after the game. “You could see that the forwards played with that in mind during the first half, but they adjusted and I was proud of the way they played the rest of the game.”

Ayla Thompson added 15 rebounds to go with three points and five steals for the Bombers, while Dani Balestrini scored six points and five rebounds and Catalina Daby scored four points to go with four rebounds. Riley led the team with three assists.

For the Red Storm, Jazzmyn Tuthill scored nine points to go with eight rebounds, while the duo of Shauna Manning and Megan Kilroy scored seven points apiece, with Manning grabbing seven rebounds and three blocked shots and Kilroy adding five rebounds, three assists and four steals.

Kirstin Lagree added two points and four rebounds.

At press time, Riley stood 44 points away from being the first Lake Placid girls basketball player to reach the 1,000point mark. Riley has already set the school record for points scored and three pointers made with over 100.

Girls varsity basketball Ogdensburg 59, Tupper Lake 41 Ogdensburg used a 23-12 third quarter run as they scored a victory against the Lady Lumberjacks Jan. 17.

MVAC, CVAC soccer to merge in two-year ‘uber league’ test run

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com WILLSBORO — Taking a page from the highly successful merger between the Section VII and Section X football teams, the Mountain and Valley and Champlain Valley Athletic Conference (MVAC) will merge leagues for the 2011-12 soccer season.

The two-year trial was developed through Section VII soccer chairman Rob McAuliffe, head coach of the state champion Chazy boys soccer team.

“There could be some tweaks, but the formation of the schedule is done and the proposal has been approved by both the MVAC, CVAC and Section VII,” McAuliffe said. “I put a proposal together in the spring and shared it with other schools because we thought that this was a way to solve some of the problems the section was having.”

McAuliffe said two main concerns included the declining enrollment in some schools that forced either consolidation or elimination of soccer programs and the lack of competitive balance in certain divisions within

The new soccer uber-league will have three divisions, the first comprising of all Class B teams (AuSable Valley, Beekmantown, Northeastern Clinton, Peru, Plattsburgh, Saranac and Saranac Lake), the second of northern Class C and Class D programs (Lake Placid, Northern Adirondack, Seton Catholic, Chazy, ElizabethtownLewis, Willsboro and Westport for boys; Lake Placid, Northern Adirondack, Seton Catholic, Ticonderoga, Moriah, Chazy, Elizabethtown-Lewis and Willsboro for girls) and a third division of southern Class D schools (Crown Point, Indian Lake/Long Lake, Johnsburg, Keene, Minerva/Newcomb, Schroon Lake and Wells for boys; Crown Point, Indian Lake/Long Lake, Westport, Keene, Minerva/Newcomb, Schroon Lake and Wells for girls). cer to make room for Moriah and Ticonderoga, who do not have boys soccer programs.

“We are looking to see if the geographical schedule is going to work,” Karen Lopez, director of Section VII, said. “There is a hope that this new league is going to save on transportation and time both on the bus and away from school for the districts.”

“I think that this is going to be great,” Steven Broadwell, Willsboro Central School superintendent and president of the MVAC said. “This shows a collaborative effort between all of the schools in the north country that looked at this in terms of the best interests of soccer in the region, and I think that this is going to be very good for the sport in this area.”

McAuliffe said that the new league format will also ensure that teams will have enough games to fill out a schedule.

“Many MVAC schools were having trouble getting games outside the league schedule,” McAuliffe said. “This will give all teams a solid schedule of around 14 games.

As a whole, this is the best thing for our sectional soccer teams.”

Lopez said that the two-year trial for the

new soccer league is similar to what the section did when it went into a partnership with Section X to create the Northern Conference for football, which has sent several teams deep in to the regional playoffs, including two-time state finalist Moriah and state finalist Ticonderoga.

“We will look at this at the end of two years and see if it has done everything that we were looking to accomplish,” Lopez said.

“We are at the point where we wanted to try this because a lot of the benefits do make sense. This is a healthy thing to look at for the section and for our school districts.”

The new schedule would not feature any league championship games, with division titles determined only by the record within the set league schedule. Seeding for the Class B and Class C soccer tournaments would be determined by games within their own classification.

“We are still working out things like how all star teams would be assigned and how tiebreakers would be handled, but we are excited for this upcoming season,” McAuliffe said.

Boys varsity basketball each scored 11 points and Andrew Favro scored seven points.

CJ Stewart scored 19 points for the Red Storm, while Benioko Harris added 16 points, Forrest Morgan added six points, Zach Buckley scored four points, Austin McDonough scored two points and Ben Monty also scored two points.

Wood rolled a 586 (227) series for the Patriots, while Zach Snow added a 505 (184) series, Josh Taylor rolled a 495 (190) series, Charlie Lacy rolled a 458 series and Jonah Yeager rolled a 168 high game.

Joey Robert rolled a 525 (204) and Matt Jolicoeur had a 517 (244) series for the Cougars.

While the Red Storm were able to keep the game close through the first two periods, St. Lawrence scored three goals in the third to put the game away Jan. 17.

Tyler O’Neill recorded 23 saves in net for the Red Storm.

Lake Placid 0, Alexandria Bay 0 Brady Hayes made 13 saves to earn a shutout against Alexandria Bay, but Andrew Swords was equal to the task, stopping 20 shots as the two teams skated to a scoreless draw Jan. 17.

Saranac Lake 1, NCCS 1 Ben LeDuc scored the equalizer with less than a minute to go in the third period as the Cougars snatched a tie from the jaws of defeat against the Red Storm Jan. 19.

LeDuc was assisted by Liam McDonough and Bobby Marks with 52 seconds left in the game, while the Saranac Lake goal was scored by Devin Darrah with only 3:17 seconds remaining in the third period, assisted

by Kyle Dora and Grant Strack.

Cody Knass made 25 saves for the Cougars, while Tyler O’Neill also made 25 saves for the Red Storm.

Saranac Lake 2, Ogdensburg 1 Devin Darrah scored the game winning goal in the third period on an assist from Grant Strack as the Red Storm scored a win Jan. 21.

Kyle Dora added the other goal of the game for the Red Storm, scoring on an unassisted goal in the second period. Tyler O’Neill made 27 saves in the win.

Tupper Lake 9, Malone 5 The Lumberjacks scored four goals in the first and third periods to beat Malone Jan. 21.

Pierson St. Pierre scored an even strength and power play goal, with the man advantage goal assisted by Kris Crouse. Crouse also scored a pair of goals within three minutes of each other in the third period, with St, Pierre assisting on the second.

Broyce Guerette scored two goals as well for the Lumberjacks, with Robbie LaLonde, who also scored a goal, assisting on both.

Jon Kopp and Sonny Kentile also scored goals, while Marcus Richer made 25 saves in the win.

AVCS 9, Willsboro 1 Willsboro 3, AVCS 1 Sean Pulsifer rolled a 533 (211) series as the Patriots won the boys match against the Warriors Jan. 21.

In the girls match, Ali Beebe paced the Hornets with a 586 series (201), with Holly Peterson rolling a 186 high game.

Ben LeDuc opened the scoring in the third period on a power play goal assisted by Matt Letourneau and Liam McDonough, followed by a Nich Guay even strength goal assisted by Dylan Carter and a Letourneau goal assisted by Reese Tucker. All three goals were scored within the first 3:11 in the period.

Carter added the final goal of the game for the Cougars on assists from Tucker and McDonough, while Cody Gnass recorded 14 saves.

John Bujold and Robbie LaLonde scored unassisted goals for the Lumberjacks in the third period, while Marcus Richer turned aside 37 shots.

Obituaries Cortland Thomas Litts, Jr. Sept. 3, 1948 — Dec. 25, 2010 Cortland Thomas Litts Jr., 62, of Stuart, Florida, entered into heaven on Dec. 25, 2010 at the West Palm Beach Veteran’s Hospital.

Cortland was born in Schenectady, N.Y. on Sept. 3, 1948 to Rachel Ettinger and Cortland Thomas Litts. Sr. After graduating from Lake George High School, Cortland enlisted in the United States Army and served overseas in Vietnam for 2 years as a medic and surgical assistant at the 95th Evac Hospital in Da Nang. He received several honorary medals. Upon returning home from Vietnam, Cortland received his Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Education from SUNY Albany. He then worked as a pharmaceutical sales representative and as a substitute teacher before becoming a successful model during the 1980's. Cortland was well known for being in many magazine advertisements and television commercials but was perhaps best known for being "The Winston Man". Cortland had dedicated the past 20 years of his life to investigating and researching Biblical and Egyptian archaeology.

Cortland was an avid scholar and athlete. He played basketball on a daily basis and was rarely seen without his basketball and backpack. He enjoyed coaching and mentoring children. Cortland was most at peace when in nature and had a great love and Cortland Litts, Jr. respect for animals.

Cortland was predeceased by his mother, Rachel (Ettinger) Cocca. He is survived by his only daughter, Melissa Litts-Cass and his only grandson, Brant Hamilton Cass of Redford, who will continue to live out his legacy each day.

Cortland’s ashes will be spread in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, where he spent most of his summers. A Memorial Service with full military honors will take place at the Saratoga National Cemetery on a spring day to be determined.

Donations in Cortland’s memory may be made to your local animal shelter.

Winter sports, hot chili at Paul Smiths VIC PAUL SMITHS — Winter sports go better with chili — and both will be on tap at the annual Chili Ski Tasting at the VIC on Saturday, Jan. 29.

Culinary arts students from Paul Smith’s College will serve up chili starting at 11:30 a.m. and keep going as long as it lasts. Hot drinks will be provided by Sodexo.

Annual Lake Placid Loppet set LAKE PLACID — The 29th annual Lake Placid Loppet, presented by High Peaks Cyclery, cross-country ski races will be held Saturday, Feb. 5, at the Olympic Sports Complex Cross Country Ski Center.

The Lake Placid Loppet has established itself as one of the best events of its kind in the country. Over the past 28 years, thousands of skiers have enjoyed skiing and racing on the challenging Mt. Van Hoevenberg

This annual event, presented by High Peaks Cyclery in Lake Placid, attracts hundreds of skiers from across the United States and Canada. It consists of a 50 kilometer Loppet (30.1 miles) and a 25-kilometer KortLoppet (about 15 miles).

There will be classic technique and free technique race starts for both the 25K and 50K races. Bib pickup will run from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. in the Olympic Sports Complex Cross-Country Lodge on Friday, Feb. 4, and on race day, Feb. 5, bib pick-up runs from 7 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. There is no race day registration. The 50K classic technique race begins at 9 a.m. followed by the 25K classic race at 9:15 a.m. The 50K free technique race starts at 10 a.m. and the 25K free technique race will follow at 10:15 a.m.

PLEASE HELP! My children’s hearts are broken.
