Flu season hitting Essex County

WORK CONTINUES

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — The next venture of the North Country Mission of Hope will include six local high school students. Students from Elizabethtown-Lewis, Keene and Willsboro school districts will join youth from throughout the North Country, traveling to Nicaragua to help those in need. Students will include Bridgett Blood, Megan Hall, Corinne White, Sam Politi, Emily Morris and Brody Hooper. According to organizers, Mission of Hope is a humanitarian group based out of Plattsburgh that was established in 1998 by Sister Debbie Blow in response to devastation wreaked by Hurricane Mitch. To help with the cause, the local youth have planned a fundraising dance that will take place Friday, Jan. 18, from 8 to 10 p.m. in the ElizabethtownLewis Central School auditorium. Admission is $3 for ages 12 and older with proceeds going to raise funds for home shelters. Music will be provided by a young aspiring group of musicians from Saratoga named Vontus. The band will be performing at no cost. Along with the dance, the students have planned a 50-50 raffle that has already begun with tickets also being sold at the door on the night of the dance. The winner will be drawn near the end of the dance. For more information on the Mission, visit missionofhope.org.

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — As New York state continues to deal with a flu outbreak, Essex County Public Health officials said they are ready to help with vaccinations and medical assistance. “All hospitals in Essex County are showing a higher-than-average number of visits for the chief complaint of respiratory and fever symptoms,” Sue Allott said during the Jan. 14 Human Services Committee meeting. “Pharmacies are recording above-average sales of influenza-related medications. Gov. Cuomo declared the state a disaster emergency because of the numbers of the flu.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Willsboro center eyes March opening By Katherine Clark katherine@denpubs.com WILLSBORO — The former Willsboro Central School — now the home of the Champlain Valley Senior Center — will welcome a former student as one of the building’s first residents. Norma Carter, 83 of Long Island, was in one of the first graduating classes at the school, and she said she wants to come back to where she grew up.

“I want to be near my family, and it’s nice there will be a place I can go,” Carter said. The Champlain Valley Senior Center is on schedule to open in March 2013. While the transformation from school to senior home is ongoing, Eli Schwartzberg, developer of Stonebrooks Properties, said the construction of the walls and plumbing have all been finished. “Right now, to you and me, it might look like it is

still very much a construction site,” Schwartzberg said. “But we have done all of the harder work, and the building will soon be ready for the final cosmetic touches.” The first floor apartments have already been rented. The second and third floors will be finished soon after the building opens to first-floor residents. The center has been created through the reconstruction of the former

Willsboro Central School, at 10 Gilliland Lane. Schwartzberg said it has been his goal from the time he purchased the building through renovation to maintain the character of the building while creating a warm and inviting environment for residents. “When people come in here, I want them to feel like it is a school,” Schwartzberg said. “But with more home features.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Schools react to state proposals By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — While many local school officials are pleased that the current state administration is looking at the education system, they feel many key issues were not tackled in a recent report. Last week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office released a preliminary report from the NY Education Reform CONTINUED ON PAGE 5
