Douglas set to lead county in ‘11

ELIZABETHTOWN — With Monday’s unanimous reappointment of Essex County Board of Supervisors Chairman Randy Douglas, officials say the board has entered a new era of bipartisanship.

When the Jay Democrat ascended to the county’s top post in 2010, he shattered three decades of Republican control of the county Board of Supervisors.

Longtime St. Armand Supervisor Joyce Morency, a Republican, said under Douglas’s leadership, long-standing partisan divides have fallen by the wayside. ...See Douglas on page 3

Douglas Continued from page 1 “When I helped support Randy Douglas in 2010, it started then — everybody started working together. It was a goal of this board,” she said. “I think we have proven we can do it. Because of Randy and his personality and everyone else on this board, we are finally bipartisan.”

Democrats and Independents have made a dent in the GOP’s majority on the Essex County board, but Republicans are still the norm.

Last year, controversial decisions like the future of the Horace Nye Nursing Home and the county fish hatchery did not see a partisan divide. Arguments about divisive issues have instead been based on the concerns of individual supervisors.

Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward — who chaired the Essex County board prior to her election to the state Legislature — pointed to a recent shift in county politics.

“I like to think I had a hand in changing things because when I was chairman of this board, it was the first time ever a Republican chair appointed a Democrat to chair anything,” she said. “I appointed Jerry Morrow to chair the jail committee and he did a terrific job.”

In 2010, Douglas’s bid for the top county

seat was challenged by vocal Moriah Republican Tom Scozzafava. But, after a year of lobbying together in Albany to save the Moriah Shock Incarceration Facility, funding for the state Olympic Regional Development Authority and mitigating the closing of the Crown Point Bridge, Scozzafava has become Douglas’s biggest supporter.

“He handled the day-to-day job of running his town and also the many responsibilities that chairman of this board brings,” Scozzafava said. “I have served on this board for over two decades and I can honestly say our current chairman is the hardest working I’ve ever served under. He listens and reads everything that anyone sends him.”

For his part, Douglas said the partisan shift is less about him and more about the region’s changing political landscape and the constant competition for finite resources with other counties in the state.

“I would say when I first came on it was more Republican versus Democrat and then once we got a couple independents elected, people started looking outside the box in order to get things done,” Douglas said. “I think we have to be bipartisan and work as a group.

Partisanship isn’t helpful to anybody.”

North Elba Supervisor Roby Politi also received unanimous backing and will continue to serve as county vice chair.

‘Pay freeze’ about saving jobs

By Jon Alexander denpubs@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — Essex County Board of Supervisors Chairman Randy Douglas fired back at Civil Service Employees Association brass, saying a pay freeze is meant to avoid layoffs, not punish workers.

At the Dec. 27 end-of-the-year county board meeting, Essex County CSEA President Mike McGinn lambasted county supervisors for even suggesting county laborers forgo their guaranteed raises.

Douglas has repeatedly asked the CSEA – which represents a lion’s share of county employees – to come back to the negotiation table and agree to forgo its contractually agreed upon 4.25-percent raise.

“The union can hammer away at me all they want. I was a CSEA member for 15 years and proud to be one,” he said. “All I was trying to do is avoid layoffs.”

And the Jay Democrat is frustrated that all of his attempts to contact CSEA brass have gone completely unanswered.

The 2008 CSEA contract will cost the cashstrapped county $700,000 in raises over the

next two years.

“You take $1.4 million over the next two years, that’s a huge increase. It doesn’t give us a lot of wiggle room,” he said. “I’m scared.

I hope things get better in the economy.”

Union officials counter that the real governmental waste isn’t found in staffing, but in poor management and wasteful programmatic spending.

Douglas points to an instance in 2007 when county supervisors contributed an additional $400,000 above the contractual amount toward employees’ health insurance premiums as proof that the board has a history of working with the union.

Douglas said he will not push for legislative action to freeze union pay, as was the case in at least one other New York county.

“I’m not going to bring it to the supervisors to say, ‘let’s freeze wages in the middle of a contract,’” he said. “I’m going to wait and see what the governor ’s proposal is.”

Last week, Douglas said the move was on the table but he didn’t foresee it in the immediate future.

He said he will closely watch pending court battles that are anticipated.

The three boys, whose families are part of our Camp Dudley community, were here to bring in the New Year with other campers and friends of Dudley. We grieve at their loss and extend our sincere condolences to them, and especially to the family of the boy who died. I didn't know him, but the mother of one of the boys who survived described him to me as "the best of the best." The two survivors, she said, will always remember him as their dear friend.

As for the two boys who survived, we wish you all the best in making a full recovery from your injuries. This tragedy brought a wide range of people together— young people, older friends and family members, helpful neighbors, emergency responders. We're all family now, and we hope you'll keep in touch.

ur area greeted “Baby New Year” with mild weather and some area celebrations. Several other areas of the country did not do so well with the dumping of several inches of snow, especially the New York City & Boston areas. A few of our local rescue squad members took an ambulance and went to N.Y. City to assist them in the crisis. They are to be commended in offering assistance to another community in trouble, we are proud of your efforts. Our snow is nearly gone as of this Sunday morning, just a lot of soggy ground all around.

I received word that one of our Willsboro High School graduates continues to excel in her studies, Katie Shepard who is in her fourth year at Plattsburg State University has a 4.0 average and remains on the High Honors listing. Way to go Katie we are so proud of you and wish you well in your education career field.

’ve finished roaming the highways for a while, having taken in the sights of urban Texas and coastal Alabama, neither of which is very appealing if you’re used to the Champlain Valley. The trip home was rather easy, since there was little traffic due to the New Year ’s holiday. Trucks crawling side by side up long hills were largely absent, and the police were likewise scarce, until you get to New York, where a radar cop guards the border. This is anecdotal, but it seems to me we are heavily policed on the roads compared to other states.

I just use my cruise control and they don’t bother me- the last time I got a speeding ticket, or any ticket for that matter, was in 1971. I’m not free of roadway sins, and it’s a matter of time before they catch me doing something stupid.

Here in Essex, I’ve been spending time at the town hall working on little projects, like getting the town hall itself insulated. The

town got a grant for the work, but to actually hire a contractor is not easy. The grant comes from a federal program through the state, with reports, specifications, certifications, prevailing wages and endless details to attend to. Luckily, I have years of experience with arcane and maddening government paperwork, but this seemingly simple project is a doozey. The next grant to work on is getting facing stone on the Lake Street wall in the hamlet. I’m told this money comes from a different pool and is much less cumbersome a process than the insulation job. Just to let you know, this is volunteer work on my part, as I am no longer the deputy town supervisor. Mark Wrisley, a board member, has taken the position, which is proper and a more effective arrangement. I’m happy messing with paperwork and glad the supervisor is very healthy and traveled out of town infrequently. I had to chair only one meeting in her absence during my tenure as deputy.

appy New Year everyone. Time to not look back at the past (unless to learn from it) but to look forward to new possibilities and opportunities.

I am a huge music nut and I recently found a quote by a singer of a band I like a lot, Annette Olsen of Nightwish, that really sums up my take on life nicely, “Live your life fully – love, laugh and cry with all your heart, life doesn’t last for ever.”

The year is starting out quietly for our community, maybe we’re bracing for all the snow that seems to be hitting everybody else. The recent community newsletter sent out had some great tips of conserving water as well as how to stop the loss of water through leaks. Definitely worth checking out and applying to our homes.

I just found out that the Keeseville Free Library has a Wii system and big screen Television down in the basement for patrons to use. I am so frustrated that I cannot walk like I am use to doing in the area. Between

the cold and early darkness I just cannot find the time. I have been making use of my Wii to keep from getting static during the winter. It is a lot of fun and a great form of exercise when there are no other options.

Check it out if you never have as it really can be a lot of fun for all ages. As a reminder the Library’s winter hours are Monday 1 to 7, Tuesday and Wednesday 10 to noon and then 1 to 7, closed Thursdays and Sundays, Friday 1 to 5, and Saturdays 9 to 3.

If you are more interested in exercising your brain, don’t forget the library does have the top ten best sellers for sign out. Enjoy.

Finally, I was given the pleasant surprise of a stranger driving by while my son and I were shoveling, and he very kindly used his truck to give a quick plow saving us a lot of hardship. ne of the consequences of making it past the half-century mark, it seems, is an increasing awareness of the great good luck that it takes to do so.

That awareness grows slowly for the most part, but at times it can also suddenly fill up your vision with a jolt. The brutality of the world's randomness is brought home at such moments in a way that can stay with us forever.

Our community suffered such a tragic moment early in the morning of New Year's Eve, when three young men, all close friends, were involved in a single-car accident on Camp Dudley Road. The car went off the road on a corner and hit a tree, causing severe damage to the driver's side. The driver most likely died on impact. The two passengers—cousins who had known the driver since childhood— suffered serious injuries. They were exposed to the cold and wet for about 45 minutes before one of them managed to make his way to a nearby house and summon help.

Want our voice to be heard Rotary Club says thanks

The Essex County Republican MORIAH—This has been an unusual fine winter for skating, and the young people of Port Henry have thoroughly improved it. For several days before Christmas the ice the bay was smooth as glass and strong enough to hold skaters and ice boats. On Christmas day more skaters went on the bay than had been seen before for years, beside many flying ice-boats. On Monday forenoon of this week, the wind was southerly and it wore away the ice rapidly.

Young Welsh, Murphy, Whitman, and Cardinel, boys about twelve years of age, were out early and skated well out onto the lake on new ice which had been frozen the night before. The wind loosened the newly frozen ice from the main body, and before the boys were aware of the fact, they were floating down north on a large body of ice, and quite a distance from the shore. Some railroad men who were working opposite saw the situation of the boys, and procured a boat and pushed it across the ice to the opening, and put Boy McKenzie into it, and he rowed to the floating section and took off Murphy, Whitman and Cardinel, all the boat would hold, and told Welsh he would soon be back after him, but Welsh would not wait. He jumped into the water, skates, clothes, and all and swam to the main ice, over a hundred feet and crawled out unassisted, it is indeed a most astonishing and surprising feat.

resident of Deerhead, died from burns on Friday at the Community House, which he received last Wednesday, when the home at Deerhead, in which he loved with his grandson, Norris Crowningshield, was burned to the ground.

The elder Crowningshield, who was entirely blind and partially deaf was alone in the house at the time, and was awakened by the cat scratching his face. He tried to escape from the burning building, but was overcome by smoke and fell near the door way.

Andre La Pine of Elizabethtown, who was en route to Plattsburg, noticed the fire and managed to rescue the aged man. He was rushed to the Community House hospital at Elizabethtown, where his burns were treated, but even with every medical attention given him he could not survive, he passed away Friday.

Condolences appreciated To the Valley News: The family of the late Deacon Joseph H. Gilbert, II, wishes to extend their sincerest appreciation to everyone who offered their condolences upon his passing on Dec. 15, 2010, while residing in Florida.

A very special appreciation and honor is extended to the Bishop of Ogdensburg, Terry LaValley, for officiating over Joseph’s funeral mass along with Rev. Kris Lauzon, Rev. Donald Kramberg as well Rev. Phillip Allen. We felt honored and humbled to have several area Deacons attend and participate in the celebration of Joseph’s life at the Holy Name Church in Au Sable Forks.

We further wish to offer a heartfelt thank you to members of the American Legion Post 504 who accepted our invitation to be pallbearers as well as provide a ceremony in honor of Joseph’s military service; and to the volunteers who prepared and hosted the reception following the burial service. We greatly appreciated John Thwaits’ (Owner/Operator Zaumetzer-Sprague Funeral Home) professionalism and courtesy throughout the funeral preparations.

Everyone’s prayers and condolences have been a wonderful source of comfort and consolation as we mourn the loss of Joseph, especially during the holiday season.

We have both lived in Westport all of our lives (except for college and the Marines). We presently reside there six months of the year. We only ask to voice our vote in Westport’s school elections.

Why we don’t have money To the Valley News: Ignorance is bliss, but if you’re curious about why you don’t have enough money to pay all the bills and then go out on the town on the weekend — after all, you work hard enough — there is a YouTube video that explains it. It’s called “The Money Masters.”

Google it. It’s a long, three and a half hour video, but the basic argument is presented in the first 30 minutes. The rest is a detailed history lesson in how the tricky rich have been fleecing the flock for centuries. The flock, of course, is the working class, or people who work for a living. Let me give a few tidbits.

The Federal Reserve Bank, which is empowered to print our money, is not federal.

It is a private bank, owned by private citizens, and it is a for-profit corporation.

The Federal Reserve Bank has no reserve.

When it needs money, it prints it.

The Federal Reserve Bank has a monopoly on printed U.S. currency. No one else can print money. Being a monopoly, this bank has many ways to make profits with this paper. Lending it to the government, to other corporations and banks, making a percentage on every dollar spent.

This video offers solutions. Remove the power to print money from private hands, and place it in “public” hands, ie, the government. Put men of integrity in the government. A country’s money belongs to the people of the country, not to a few super-rich families.

Central banking, which includes the Federal Reserve Bank in the USA, is the root of the world’s economic problems. Yes, the super-rich are getting richer, and all us schmucks are getting poorer. This video explains how they do it, starting with the deceptive naming of their U.S. bank, the U.S. Federal Reserve. Building on this deception, they use gibberish to describe the stock market and the economy, which keeps the general population confused, ignorant of what’s really going on, and therefore unable to make changes to the situation.

Now’s a good time to view the video, while it’s still available to see. It’s an eyeopener. It reveals who’s really in charge of the world. It names names.

At Boquet Mountain Farm, conserved through a partnership with the Eddy Foundation, young farmers, Sara Kurak and James Graves, are part of the resurgence of local farming. They reclaim old fields with “pigpower” — turning these living plows loose in abandoned fields where they root around, chomp on grubs and other little goodies turning them into real, not petroleum-based fertilizer, and make healthy soil for fabulous vegetables that feed local people through their CSA or “community-supported agriculture.”

hat should you do if you suspect that your cat or dog has sneaked out and can't be found? Here are some tips we hope will help you find your lost pet: First, search the immediate area thoroughly. Cats and dogs can get into small, out-of-the-way places. Expand the search if needed and ask neighbors, letter carries, and delivery people if they have seen your pet. Make sure you call for your pet and listen; if he is injured, he may not be able to come to you. Second, post fliers throughout the area where your pet was lost. Create a simple, bright flier with a picture of your Tye pet, the date, and your name and phone number.

BRASS annual meeting set

ELIZABETHTOWN — Essex County lawmakers are working for a trial for a lawsuit about vacation pay filed by former Assistant District Attorney Debra Whitson.

Whitson, who is asking for $10,000, has been turned down twice.

Whitson, who now practices law in Elizabethtown, sued the county in 2006 after she was denied payment for what she said was accumulated leave time.

ESSEX — The Boquet River Association will hold its annual meeting on Monday, Jan. 10, at the Whallonsburg Grange Hall on Route 22 in Essex.

The business meeting will begin at 7 p.m., followed by refreshments and a slide show on BRASS's 2010 activities and plans for 2011. The Annual Meeting includes election of at-large board members and officers.

BRASS members and the general public are encouraged to attend.

ECH ushers in new technology era with service

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — Elizabethtown Community Hospital (ECH) has ushered in the 21st century with fiber-optic technology.

The hospital was recently equipped with the high-speed technology through Westelcom.

“They have been talking about this for a long time,” said Jane Hooper, ECH director of community relations. “It is now time for us to realize the dream. For such a small facility, it is pretty wires in and pretty connected and it is quite impressive and it makes it great because we can be a little faster and better increase our services.”

“We have the Internet and the phone hooked up to the fiber optic network,” said Brett Sicola, ECH director of information systems and support. “We are going to be connected with CVPH later this week.”

Sicola said the biggest reason for the change to fiber optics was to increase their “pipeline.”

“Once everything is up and running, we will go from a pipe of three megabytes to one gigabyte,” Sicola said. “Right now, if we had a major accident or event and it required us to send several hundred images to CVPH, it would take us about 30 minutes. Now, it will only take a couple. They will be on our network as if they were just across the street.”

Both Hooper and Sicola said the change is beneficial in a number of ways.

“This will be a big help with our telemedi-

cine program,” Hooper said. “We have a high definition television unit and camera that connects with a unit in Plattsburgh and doctors can meet with patients virtually. This will allow more patients the chance o stay close to home instead of traveling, and it will give us a chance to expand the telemedicine services.”

“It is going to be a big benefit to the patients that the hospital takes care of,” Sicola said.

“The information that needs to be transferee between sites can get there even faster, even before the patient is transferee, the doctors will already have the information and will have had it for a long time to make a diagnosis and have a plan in place.”

Sicola likened the change in their portion of the information superhighway to a lane improvement.

“Before, we were trying to put four lanes of traffic onto a dirt road,” Sicola said. “Now, we are putting four lanes of traffic onto a 10-lane road. Everyone can use the pipe to treat the patients. There is a lot more space for all of the doctors to be able to get onto the pipe and work.”

Hooper said that the upgrade is part of the hospital’s commitment to providing care.

“We have really made an investment into technology for such a small-town hospital,” Hooper said. “It is great to have a company like Westelcom working with us, because it is two local organizations that are both in a positive place to help shoulder the cost of a program that will help patients and the community.”

Elizabethtown businesses will soon benefit from ‘pipe’

ELIZABETHTOWN — Thanks to an Elizabethtown Community Hospital Project, fiber optic technology may be coming to business owners in Elizabethtown.

Chazy Westport Communications recently finished wiring the hospital for the fiber optic technology, and may soon do the same for local businesses, including the town offices.

“This is a big thing for the town,” said Elizabethtown supervisor Noel Merrihew. “To be able to get involved with something like this is a tremendous benefit not only for the hospital, but for the town as well.”

Currently, the fiber optic services would only be available to local businesses along and near Main Street, according to Jim Forcier, president and CEO of Chazy Westport Communications.

“We are looking at this in phases,” Forcier said. “Right now, we are going to be able to offer it to businesses along the route that runs to the hospital. If there is significant interest, we may go down Water Street and some of the side streets, as well.”

Forcier said the latest expansion of fiber optic services for his company is something they hope to build from.

“It’s something that we have had in Westport,” said Forcier. “To me, there has been enough interest between the businesses in Elizabethtown and having the hospital as the anchor for that service is a big part of that.”

Forcier also said the company had a proposal submitted to the county about providing the offices with the fiber optic services.

“We have not heard anything back as of yet, but we do have a proposal that we have submitted with the county to bring it in there,” Forcier said.

Forcier said the fiber optic service would provide companies with faster speeds and service.

“The biggest thing is that you will have unlimited band-width,” he said. “Businesses will also have the chance to have direct contact with other sites if they have multiple locations.”

Winter turkey shoots planned The Willsboro Fish and Game Club will start its winter turkey shoots Jan. 9 and Jan. 23 from noon until 3 p.m.

Ranges are 50 yards to 265 yards with any gun, any sight scopes up to four power. Lunch will be available. Call Wayne at 873-2198 for details.

New year with a new addition

The first baby born at CVPH Medical Center in 2011 was delivered in the early afternoon hours of Monday, Jan. 3. Logan John Pulsifer was born to first-time parents Briana and Jesse Pulsifer of Essex at 1:54 p.m., weighing 6.3 pounds and measuring 18 inches long.

Logan was the first child in their families, to their knowledge, to receive the honor of being the first child born in any New Year at a hospital. The occasion was even more special because Logan wasn’t expected for almost another three weeks.

“My due date was actually Jan. 22,” said

Briana, adding that Logan was born healthy and happy. “I was just ready.”

In recognition of Logan being the first child born this year at the hospital, the Pulsifers received a colonial cradle donated by Robert St. Maur of Cumberland Head in honor of the Veterans of Clinton County. Finishing work on the cradle was donated by Mike Calman, of Plattsburgh. Logan also received a collection of books given by the Journey Into Reading program.

“It’s nice that they give out stuff like that when you have the first New Year baby,” Logan’s mother said of the donation.

Logan was anticipated to return home with his mother and father this week. Briana works at Mountain Lake Services in Willsboro and Jesse is employed with a small carpentry business based in Saranac.

Westport CS prepare for tough Woman saved by the trash can budget season in coming months

Dr. Gallagher said one concern he has is the extra time that will be afforded New York State Governor-Elect Andrew Cuomo as he prepares an executive budget, and what that budget may not hold for schools.

“Because we have a newly elected governor, he is given until the end of January to introduce his executive budget,” Gallagher said. “The indications that I have received is that [Cuomo] was working on it already, and it is not a pretty picture. To say the least, our state aid is unlikely to go anywhere but down, and that’s to go with increased spending that will be mandated by the state.”

Dr. Gallagher said it will be a budget season full of tough questions and tough choices, but he was hopeful that the school and the board would be able to do right by both the taxpayers and the students.

“It’s going to be hard work to come up with a budget that is going to be fair to the taxpayers and not hurt the educational programs that we offer at this school,” he said.

“It’s going to take a lot of hard work and time.”

keith@denpubs.com WESTPORT — Throughout the region, superintendents and school boards are bracing for what could be a very tough budget season.

Westport Central School is no different.

“We have to be very careful because of the financial and economic climate,” said Westport school board president Alice LaRock.

“We have to continuously look at the expenses that we have to raise from taxes and weigh both the concerns of the taxpayers in the community and the obligation that we have to provide a proper education for the students of this district.”

School superintendent Dr. John Gallagher said while he has mentioned the budget in every board meeting since the 2010-11 spending plan was passed, he wanted to get to work on the details as soon as possible.

“I want an outline in place of what you want me to do in the next few months,” Gallagher told members of the school board at its Dec. 16 meeting. “I want the board to consider the direction in which they want to proceed and what figures they want from me in order to make this process as efficient as possible.”

Dr. Gallagher said the ultimate goal is to keep spending at normal levels.

“The goal is to have no increase in the tax levy and have the budget as close to what it is this year,” Gallagher said. “Right now,

However, it was just that for Robin Amodio, who used her Northern Sanitation can as a walker after breaking her hip in a fall.

It all started after some snowfall on Dec. 13, when Amodio went outside of her Eggleston Lane Road home in Wadhams.

“The person who was going to plow my driveway never showed up, and I couldn’t tell where the driveway ended and a ditch began,” Amodio said. “When I stepped into the ditch, I went down.”

Amodio said, while she was not too far away from her house, trying to move with a broken hip was not going to happen.

“The house was so close but I couldn’t get there,” Amodio said. “No one could hear me screaming.”

That’s when she had an idea.

“Adrenaline kicked in and somehow I managed to grab the Northern Sanitation trash bin and pull myself up into a standing position,” Amodio said. “I used the bin like a walker of sorts and dragged myself up the driveway. That took about an hour.“ While she was now at the house, Amodio said she was in no way out of the woods.

“I was becoming hypothermic,” she said.

“When I got to the door I had to abandon the bin and get to the phone by hanging onto whatever was available. I was feeling like I was going into shock but got 911 and fell on the couch while they stayed on the line talk-

ing to me until the ambulance came. By this time I ran out of adrenaline and the pain was excruciating.”

Amodio is now recovering from her injury and has started physical therapy. She said that while there was a problem with not being able to see the ditch from the driveway, there were several things that could have been done to prevent the incident.

“Many of the falls like mine can be prevented,” Amodio said. “I was not wearing proper clothing for the weather and perhaps the worst was boots without a tread. It could have been prevented if I had worn something like YakTrax, had warmer clothing on and most of all, had a reliable cell phone with me.”

Amodio said if anyone takes anything away from her story, it would be that she hopes people will be aware and prepared when going outside in the winter.

“This is what I want to alert everyone to, especially those who live in an isolated area with little traffic,” she said. “It can happen to anyone. At Fletcher Allen I asked if this was strictly age related and was told it happens every winter to people of all ages. I just don’t want this to happen to anyone else.”

Amodio also said that pre-existing conditions were part of the issue.

“There are lots of folks my age who fall and don’t break bones,” Amodio said. “I have rheumatoid arthritis and had previously taken Prednisone for many months. Prednisone causes osteoporosis which is probably why my hip cracked. That’s another group that needs to be careful; those who have other health problems that may contribute to fractures.”

15th annual Mountaineering Fest set in Keene starting Jan. 14 KEENE VALLEY — The Mountaineer and Adirondack Rock and River have teamed up to host the 15th annual Adirondack International Mountaineering Festival, which will be held on Martin Luther King weekend, Friday, Jan. 14 through Sunday, Jan. 16.

This year ’s event will kick off Friday night with a slide show by Freddie Wilkinson at Keene Central School at 8 p.m.

Wilkinson is one of the finest alpinists in the world and will take us on his most recent climbing expeditions and talk about his recently published book “One Mountain Thousand Summits,” which he will be signing after his presentation.

Saturday’s presentation, by renowned Exum guide and Teton legend Mark Newcomb, will be preceded by raffles and a trailer for Jeff Lowe’s new film. This show will also be at the school and will begin at 7:30 p.m. The Keene Valley Fire Department and the Lake Placid Pub and Brewery will be hosting an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner at the nearby fire hall starting at 5:30 p.m.

mont’s star climber Matt McCormick, presenting slides and video at 7:30 p.m. at the Keene Valley Fire Hall.

Demo gear will be available for testing at Rock and River from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Reps from La Sportiva, Black Diamond, Mountain Hardwear, Marmot, Petzl, OR, Mammut, Patagonia and MSR will have a selection of the latest gear to send out for testing. Several instructional clinics on ice climbing, mountaineering, snowshoeing and avalanche awareness are still open on Saturday and Sunday. There are limited openings in Saturday’s Avalanche, Snowshoe Mountaineering and Intermediate/Advanced Ice clinics, as well as Sunday’s Advanced Ice, Steep Ice for the Weak and Chickenhearted, Snowshoe Mountaineering and “Climb a Slide” clinics.

Stewart’s Shops’ Holiday Match tops $1.28M ELIZABETHTOWN — Stewart’s Shops’ Holiday Match program completed its 24th year of collecting donations for local children’s charities with a record dollar amount.

The company announces that Stewart’s customers contributed $640,000. Stewart’s Shops is matching that amount, with a total of $1.28 million to be distributed to local children’s charitable organizations this spring.

“We are fortunate in these times to once again be able to grow Holiday Match to a record level, up about 2 percent from last year.

The money will be donated back into the communities where it was collected. We thank our customers, shop partners and media partners for their loyalty and hard work,” said Susan Dake, Stewart’s Foundation president.

New York Press Association Paid Summer Internship Program The New York Press Association and Denton Publications are sponsoring a paid summer internship program for 13 students state wide. An application has been sent to high schools and colleges within New York State. Any interested and qualifying students are encouraged to fill out the application and submit it to Denton Publications, P.O. Box 338, Elizabethtown, NY 12932. Once we have received the applications our management team will selected an applicant based on merit and best suited for our summer time opportunity. ELIZABETHTOWN — Anna J. Bottiroli, 97, a resident of Horace Nye Home, Elizabethtown, N.Y., died Tues, Dec. 28, 2010.

Anna was born March 8, 1913, in Ashley Falls, Mass., the daughter of Antonio and Adele (Ambrosini) Malnati.

Upon graduating from Sheffield High School, Anna assisted her father as a bookkeeper on Cooper Hill Farm. In 1936, she married John Bottiroli of Blauvelt, N.Y., where they built their home. Later they resided in Elmsford, N.Y., West Hartford, Conn., and Spencertown, N.Y. Here they owned and operated the Spencertown General Store from 1954 to 1970 when the couple retired to Greenfield Center, N.Y. Upon her husband's death in 1978, Anna moved to Nashua, N.H., and later to Elizabethtown, N.Y., until she became a resident of the Keene Valley Neighborhood House. Anna then became a resident of Horace Nye Home until her death.

Anna was also a communicant of St. Elizabeth's Church in Elizabethtown, N.Y., and a member of the Elizabethtown-Westport garden Club.

While Anna enjoyed travel, family remained the focus of her life; and she enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing and gardening.

Anna is survived by her two children, John and Elaine Bottiroli of Elizabethtown, N.Y., and Robert and Adele (Bottiroli) Schmidt of Nashua, N.H.; and her five granddaughters, Lisa A. Stanley of Ballston Spa, N.Y., JoAnn and Ben Morris of Elizabethtown, N.Y., Suzanne B. and Stephen Denton of Elizabethtown, N.Y., Theresa (Schmidt) and James Adams of Douglas, Mass., and Karen M. Schmidt of Alpharetta, Ga. Anna also enjoyed her nine great-grandchildren; 16 nieces and nephews; and a brother, Julio Malnati of Newberry, S.C. Anna was predeceased by a sister, Mary Col; and three brothers, Martin, Peter and Joseph Malnati.

Calling hours were held at W.M. Marvin's Sons Funeral Home in Elizabethtown on Thursday, Dec. 30.

A Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church Friday, Dec. 31, at 11 a.m. Internment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Canaan, Conn., in the spring.

LEWIS — Ross Lee Carson, 84, of Brandenburg, Ky. was called home to Heavenly Father on Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010.

Ross was born March 22, 1926 in Lewis, N.Y., the son of Frank Ross and Cora Edith McDougal Carson.

He was preceded in death by his previous wife, June Elizabeth Lydamore Carson, parents, two sisters and three brothers.

He is survived by his wife Lora Bennett Carson, his sons Craig (Diane) Carson, Gregory (Sherry) Carson and Rupert (Karrie) Carson, 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Ross was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served faithfully in many capacities including Elder’s Quorum President, High Priest Group Leader, Stake High Council, Branch President of the Westport, N.Y. branch and Bishop of the Brandenburg Ward. He and Lora served a mission to Lame Deer, Mont. on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation.

Ross graduated from Elizabethtown-Lewis Central High School in May 1943, whereupon he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific during WW II. Discharged from the Navy in December 1945, Ross attended Champlain College and Albany Business College. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1948 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force.

Later, he successfully flew more than 100 combat missions in the Korean War as an F-51 Mustang Pilot. In 1968, during the height of the Vietnam War, Ross flew more than 200 combat missions in his F-4 Phantom Fighter Jet. He logged more than 6,100 hours of flight time throughout his military career, including nearly 700 hours in direct combat missions. Among others, his military decorations included two Distinguished Flying Crosses, Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Ross retired from the military on June 30, 1972 as a colonel, after serving more than 26 years of distinguished military service spanning WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict.

Visitation was held from 4 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 23 and 11 a.m. on Nov. 24 at the Bruington-JenkinsSturgeon Funeral Home.

Funeral Services were held at 3 p.m. on Nov. 24 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints’ chapel in Brandenburg. Burial will take place at a later date in the Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. with full military honors.

Obituaries Louise E. Christian July 11, 1934 - Dec. 26, 2010 ELIZABETHTOWN — Louise E. Christian, 76, died at Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid, N.Y. on Dec. 26, 2010.

She was born in Essex, N.Y. on July 11, 1934, the daughter of Elbert and Julia (Swan) Howard.

She is survived by her children, Donald and wife Tammy Christian of Essex, N.Y., Elbert and wife Erma Christian of Sneads Ferry, N.C., Michael Christian of Essex, N.Y., Donna Thomas of Okeechobee, Fla. and Todd Christian of Lewis, N.Y.; her siblings, Evelyn Gay of Willsboro, N.Y., Elbert (Pete) Howard

of Essex, N.Y., Betty Christian of Saranac Lake, N.Y., and Bernice Urban of Witherbee, N.Y.; and a special friend, Walter Fretz of Saranac Lake, N.Y. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by two sisters, Beryl and Florence Howard.

Dine out for the United Way set

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — A pair of Elizabethtown restaurants will open their doors on Thursday, Jan. 13 to help a good cause.

The first-ever Dine Out for the United Way of the Adirondacks will take place on Jan. 13, with the Cobble Hill Inn and the Deers Head Inn lending their restaurants to help raise funds.

“I have been helping the United Way through ACAP with the toy drives and the baby shower,” Chrissy Cashin, owner of the Cobble Hill Inn, said. “They asked if I could help them out with this event, and whenever they ask me for something, I like to do it for them.”

“The United Way offers a lot of great things,” Joanne Baldwin, co-owner of the Deers Head Inn, said. “This is a nice way for people to come out and donate through going out to their local restaurant, and it is also a nice way that we can help out.”

Restaurants in all Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties will be participating in the Dine Out for United Way by either donating a percent of their proceeds, a percent of the wait staff tips or a straight donation to the United Way of the Adirondack Region, Inc. The public can help by simply dining out at one of the participating restaurants.

People who mention at the participating restaurants that they are there to Dine Out for United Way to enter into the drawing for raffle prizes that have been donated to the United Way. SACRAMENTO, Calif. — After more than 82 years filled with deep love, quick-witted humor, exquisite music, heated political debate, and a limitless fascination with science and computer technology, Thomas W. Lamb passed away on New Year’s Eve, 2010 in Sacramento, Calif. from lung cancer.

Tom’s approach to his disease — participating tirelessly in emerging cancer regimens — mirrored his philosophy to life: “If I can make a difference by learning more, let me try.”

Born in New York City in 1928 to Dorothea and Thomas Andrew Lamb, Tom was the older brother to John Sargent Lamb, who currently resides in Plymouth, Mass. He was also the namesake and grandson of the acclaimed theater architect, Thomas W. Lamb, whose work includes many landmark theaters and other commercial buildings across North America and around the world. He is survived by a loving, extended family including his wife of 22 years, Mary Swift of Stockton, Calif.; children Thomas Andrew (Dan Weiller) of Kinderhook, N.Y. and Heather of Essex, N.Y.; stepchildren Didi (Jerry Wittwer) and Jon (Claire Chantell) D’Errico; grandchildren Jolene, Nick, Livi, Jackson and Josie; and great-grandchild Zoe. He was predeceased by first wife, Patricia Gleason Lamb, in 1979.

Tom was a Renaissance man. A 1946 graduate of Pleasantville High School, he converted his love of music into a position in the U.S. Army band, doing his tour of duty in Europe from behind the dulcet tones of his clarinet. After finishing his degree at the University of Miami, Tom married and started a family and a career in vocational rehabilitation for the New York State Education Department. Tom also performed throughout the Adirondacks for more than two decades with the Lamplighters musical ensemble. And, with his grandfather as inspiration, Tom was the proud builder of his own geodesic dome home in upstate New York. A dedicated community activist, Tom was involved in groups ranging from Kiwanis to the Stockton Volunteers in Police Service. He also actively pursued his twin passions of fly fishing in some of the country’s most pristine locations and mastering new computer technology — including early adoption of absolutely anything produced by Apple.

His family is planning a celebration of his life at a later date. For those interested in a memorial tribute, in lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society or the Salvation Army would be in keeping with Tom’s intent to make a difference — which he most certainly has.

TFCU’s cell phone drive underway Lewis wants a monetary re-count

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — Last year, Ticonderoga Federal Credit Union was able to save 100 phones from the dump and donate them to help victims of domestic violence.

In 2011, TFCU will again team with the STOP Domestic Violence Center of Essex County for its second annual cell phone drive.

“We were looking for some charitable ideas that could be used to help out different organizations,” said Kate Thompson, marketing coordinator at TFCU. “We felt that this would be a good project for after the holidays because a lot of people get a new cell phone for Christmas and want to get rid of the old one. I am a fan of recycling, and this is a chance to give them away and have them be used for a worthy and good cause.”

The collected phones will have their data cleared and be distributed to local victims

of domestic violence to be used as an emergency 911 lifeline.

Thompson said the phone drive was very successful last year, with the credit union receiving more cell phones than they had anticipated, and they hoped that they would be able to get even more response in 2011.

“It got competitive between the branches to see which site could bring in the most phones,” Thompson said. “We also had Adirondack Wireless supply us with about 30 phones last year, and we think that now that people know we are doing this and the word is getting out there that we can have an even bigger impact in 2011.”

By Jon Alexander denpubs@denpubs.com WHALLONSBURG — Essex farmer and former Wall St. executive Sandy Lewis is seeking more reparations from the state after defeating the Adirondack Park Agency in a 2008 court case.

In November, state Supreme Court Justice Richard Meyer awarded almost $72,000 to Lewis to offset the costs of legal fees incurred battling the agency.

But according to court documents, his attorney – John Privitera – argues that Lewis incurred significantly higher costs while battling the APA for trying to assert jurisdiction over housing for his laborers.

“Conferences with the Lewis Family Farm’s principals in this case were intense, often lengthy, and poignant. This is a client’s right,” Privitera writes.

Lewis had originally sought about $223,000 in legal fees. Lewis’s legal team is now asking the court to reconsider the award amount.

The state Attorney General’s Office counters that much of Lewis’s expense was incurred because of his lawyer ’s presence at multiple press conferences and outreach efforts meant to publicize the case.

The state also challenged Privitera’s $300 an hour pay rate that the Lewis camp claimed in the suit.

The Lewis case has been a consistent thorn in the APA’s side over the last two years. It is regularly used as an example of a state agency seeking to unilaterally expand its own jurisdiction without legislative approval.

The state has until Feb. 22, 2011 to finalize its appeal.

Charms-Hands adds ladies fitness

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — Charmain Fenoff has decided to help those ladies who have made the New Year ’s resolution to lose a few pounds.

“We are adding a ladies’ fitness center and starting a Weight Watchers program which will be open to all in the other half of the building,” Fenoff, who owns Charms-Hands massage and hair styling at 8 Williams St., next to Champlain National Bank.

Fenoff said that the Weight Watchers program will begin on Thursday, Jan. 13 at 5 p.m., and that the fitness center will be open for flexible hours.

“We have a universal gym for strength training, pilates and a total gym machine,” Fenoff said. “There are also three bikes,

three treadmills and three air walks. We also have a room for those who want to work out with DVDs, which we have a bout 50-100 of.

We are also going to have Wii tournaments because they are always fun.”

Fenoff said the rate for the ladies fitness center will be $30 a month.

Along with a fitness center, Fenoff said that she will be adding three part-time hair dressers to her staff.

“So we are expanding the hair dressing that we offer,” she said. “We have also brought on an esthetician who is also a massage therapist.”

A little TLC in Au Sable Forks

Au SABLE FORKS — When Rebecca Kelley and her husband, Craig Brashear, first purchased the former Tahawus Masonic Lodge in Au Sable Forks, she knew what could eventually be there.

“It’s starting to look like what I was seeing in my head,” Kelley, head of her own ballet company, said about the open house that was held at the site of the Tahawus Lodge Center Dec. 29.

“This is a beautiful building, I really like to fix things up big and beautiful,” Kelley added.

The TLC is also part of a bigger picture along the main street of the hamlet, which includes several renovation projects to a number of the buildings along Main Street.

“There is a lot going on to help build up Main Street,” Kelley said. “With the help of many, we can transform a wonderful historic building into and inspirational, bustling hub of community activity, enterprise and cultural programming.”

Kelley spoke excitedly and optimistically as she gave people a tour of the three-story structure, laying out her vision before them of what each room would eventually become.

“I’ve been impatient because in my mind, I can see it all and what it will be,” Kelley said. “It is very satisfying to reach this milestone and have an open house. There’s still a lot left to be done. I hope that our enthusiasm for the project, though, is something that is contagious and inspiring to others.”

Many residents and those interested in the project visited the site during the open house, including town of Jay Supervisor and Essex County Board of Supervisors Chairman Randy Douglas and Housing Assistance Program of Essex County (HAPEC) Executive Director Alan Hipps.

project,” Hipps said. “There are a number of sites along Main Street that we have been able to help with, and it’s exciting to see the changes.”

“They helped by administering a grant for Main Street revitalization,” Kelley said. “It has been very positive to come together through this with some of the other businesses along Main Street and see how that are progressing. Everyone wanted something to happen, and, through this, you can start to see it happening.”

Kelley said that the next step in the process of bringing her vision to life is set to begin, but the thing that is lacking is funds.

“For the next phase, we have a lot of fundraising that needs to be done,” she said.

“But the great thing is that people from everywhere are interested in this. We are looking forward to everything that is going to happen.”

A son’s gift becomes authors first book

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com KEENE VALLEY — All Betsey ThomasTrain really wanted to do was make a special gift for her son.

Now, that gift is her first published children’s book.

“The Rock Singer,” which was written and illustrated by Thomas-Train, recently became available through Shaggy Dog Press of Westport.

“I am very, very happy with how everything has come out,” Thomas-Train said about the publication. “It is amazing how this has gone from having the look of a homemade gift for a son to a polished, public form that it is in now. So far, everyone that has seen it loves it.”

Thomas-Train said the idea to have the project published came from just that, people who had seen what she had made for her son.

“This started out originally as just a gift for my son,” Thomas-Train said. “I have always been interested in children’s books because I find them as a great source of wisdom and tenderness, and that is why I wanted to create one for him. Then people saw it and said that I should try and get it published, so I did.”

Thomas-Train has had plenty of experience in the world of children’s literature, working as an educator and in her private

psychotherapy practice.

“I have used children’s literature in my counseling and in my teaching,” she said.

“When I ask clients their memories of children's books, they’re often overcome by reverie and gauge how influential these stories were in their development.”

For the illustrations, Thomas-Train used her talents in creating unique collages to provide the images on the pages.

“That was the challenging part,” she said. “I’m not an illustrator, but I was able to create some interesting collages that became part of the book. “I love collage because it requires you to represent things simply, to zoom in on essences. And I also love color and texture.”

Plans for public readings and distribution of the book are in the works, but Thomas-Train said they will all happen after the holiday season.

Thomas-Strain said her book is about the connection that a young boy growing up in the Adirondacks develops with the rocks that are found throughout his life.

Comptroller slams village policies, could lead to calls for court action

By Jon Alexander denpubs@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — A report released this week says officials from the village of Lake Placid were grossly overpaid for work they never performed.

New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli blasted Lake Placid village government Wednesday following the completion of an audit that found employees were paid nearly $111,000 for unapproved or totally unearned leave time accruals.

In a verbal smack-down, DiNapoli said the village board was guilty of brash negli-

gence when it dolled out over $93,000 in unearned or unauthorized leave accrual payments between August 2008 and October 2009.

“Lake Placid has to get its fiscal house in order and fast,” DiNapoli said.

“Local governments must be more vigilant than ever in exercising their financial responsibilities to protect taxpayer resources from abuse and errors.”

The audit found Village Clerk Kathryn “Kook” McKillip received a whopping $38,000 in unauthorized leave accrual payments over the 14 month period, including $22,774 which she never actually earned.

DiNapoli also found the village paid seven department heads over $40,000 in unauthorized leave payments.

The audit states Lake Placid spent about $18,000 on dental and health insurance for employees who are no longer eligible.

Lake Placid Village Mayor Craig Randall said his administration started noticing discrepancies in the village books shortly after he took office — and shortly before the Comptroller ’s Office began the investigation.

He said the time in question was during a brief period when the village clerk was also handling the treasurer ’s duties.

Randall says the temporary lack of segregation of duties may have caused a problem.

“When I spoke to the ladies downstairs, I got answers which were inconsistent with the work they were doing, which is accounting work,” he said. “If you read municipal law, it gives the treasurer absolute control of the village. She’s accountable to the mayor, but the law specifies exactly what the treasurer can do and what a clerk can do.”

DiNapoli is calling for a segregation of the village’s payroll duties and increased oversight from the village board.

Randall said the board will be wading through the audit’s fallout for months.

Dance for snow at Big Tupper

At the Big Tupper Ski Area, that includes an attempt to please “whoever” needs to be pleased.

The ski area, their parent organization ARISE of Northern New York, and the Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce have joined together to present a “Snow Dance” at the mountain on Saturday, Jan. 8.

“We are pulling out all the stops in the hopes for snow,” Jim LaValley, chairman of ARISE, said. “We have brought in all of the people who might be able to influence the snow gods or whoever else can bring us some snow.”

Events start at 2 p.m. with music provided by deejays Andrew McClelland and

Pat Bedore to help people get into the dancing mood. That will be followed by the arrival of Santa Claus — yes, that guy from a couple of weeks ago — at 2:30 p.m., who will be delivering the promise of snow.

A snow prayer will be offered by the Rev. Rick Wilburn at 3 p.m., followed by storytelling for Big Tupper kids at 3:15 p.m.

At 3:30 p.m., the mountain will call on the services of a Scottish bagpiper, who will play a call to the snow gods, which will be followed at 4 p.m. with the Mohawk Medicine Man performing a traditional Native American snow ceremony.

The event will end with a group snow chant at 5 p.m.

“It’s going to be a fun day for kids and adults alike,” LaValley said. “There will be stories and song, along with giveaways of passes, day tickets, shirts and more.”

Three different spring breaks for tri-lakes schools

By Chris Morris denpubs@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — Three school districts in the North Country that have traditionally shared the same schedule for spring break have conflicting calendars this year, a shift that worries some administrators and has others discussing the educational benefits — and drawbacks — of school vacations.

The Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake and Lake Placid central school districts are all on separate spring break schedules — a change that affects some students at the Adirondack Educational Center, more commonly known as Franklin-Essex-Hamilton BOCES. Most school districts in New York take one week off in late February and another in mid-April, while the school districts covering the Tri-Lakes area traditionally take one two-week break in April.

This year, things will be different.

In Tupper Lake, for example, students and faculty will take one week in late February and another in mid-April.

Saranac Lake has scheduled its spring break for the first two weeks of April, while Lake Placid’s break extends over the second and third week of the month.

“We’re really looking to mirror most of the rest of the state, and in particular the north end of our county,” said Seth McGowan, superintendent of the Tupper Lake Central School District. “The BOCES that we belong to has a calendar where there is a split in the break.”

McGowan said it makes sense to mimic school schedules shared by a majority of districts statewide.

He also notes there’s an educational benefit to being away from school for just one week as opposed to 14 days.

“I certainly think there’s virtue to it,” McGowan said. “There’s an advantage to not being away from a learning environment for

two full weeks, for sure.”

Last February, the board of education in Saranac Lake discussed splitting up its spring break as well.

That conversation sparked a thoughtful debate among teachers, parents, and students. Some agreed with McGowan’s sentiment — that two weeks away from school has negative effects on a student’s ability to learn.

Others, like Mike Ryan of Saranac Lake, claimed that studies have shown there’s a negligible difference between one week and two week vacations.

“Testing has shown that over the course of either a two or three week vacation, the learning loss is virtually eliminated,” he said. “There were no indications that a twoweek vacation is detrimental to the learning of our children.”

At the time, Saranac Lake Superintendent Jerry Goldman said he supported breaking up the vacation, noting that being away from any activity for an extended period of time is counterproductive.

“It just doesn’t seem to me, on any level, to be very debatable that when you’re away from something for a length period of time — whether it’s practicing how to parallel park, or how to bunt, or how to throw a football, or how to do quadratic equations — the longer you’re away from it, the more difficult it is to get back to it,” he said.

Ultimately, the school board and the administration opted to stick with the status quo.

Goldman says the separate calendars could negatively affect students and faculty at the BOCES-operated Adirondack Educational Center in Saranac Lake.

“Their goal is to get us on a consistent calendar,” he said. “That way their calendar looks like our calendar. If you think of it from a logical standpoint, if all three districts have a different calendar and they try

to follow all three, their staff is going to end up working many more days than they would otherwise have to.”

Stephen Shafer is district superintendent for Franklin-Essex-Hamilton BOCES. He explains that high school juniors and seniors attending the Adirondack Educational Center spend a half-day at the campus and take classes in career and technical education programs, like cosmetology.

In the face of three different schedules, Shafer says BOCES has done its best to make accommodations.

“In a perfect world, if everybody was on the same schedule, that would be most advantageous for kids coming to the career and technical education center,” he said.

Shafer says AEC may be open on days when a particular district is closed — and students on vacation will still have the option to attend class.

That could be particularly important for student in fields like cosmetology, in which the state requires a strict number of specific hours in order to receive a license.

BOCES scheduling issues aside, Superintendent McGowan believes Saranac Lake and Lake Placid may eventually follow in his district’s footsteps.

“We see that it’s sort of imminent that it’s going to be the way things are going to be in the next few years — we’re just getting a jumpstart on it,” he said.

In Lake Placid, changing the spring break schedule isn’t as easy as an up-or-down school board vote — the two-week break is written into contracts for the teachers’ union.

Lake Placid is also reluctant to split the break because tourists flock to the area during President’s Week — merchants, many of whom have students in the school system, want to stay in town and keep their shops open.

Three seats up in Lake Placid

Kimmel: No pension here

LAKE PLACID — Two seats on the Lake Placid Village Board of Trustees and one village justice will be on the ballot this March.

Trustees David Jones and Jason Leon are currently occupying the seats that come up for election in March, as well as village Justice Margaret Doran. All three say they are planning to run for their current positions.

Those interested in running for any of the three positions may obtain nominating petitions at the village clerk’s office. Party petitions must be filed by Jan. 10, while independent petitions are due Feb. 8.

The village elections will be held on Tuesday, March 15.

SARANAC LAKE — News that Assemblywomen Teresa Sayward and Janet Duprey filed for retirement to collect a pension while still serving in the state Assembly has some taxpayers fuming.

Duprey stated that her opponents in this fall’s Assembly election were seeking public office while collecting a federal pension, but Conservative David Kimmel says that’s just not true — joking that’s he flattered that Duprey is still invoking his name.

“I am a National Guard retiree — I do not draw a pension,” he said. “I could never fleece the good people of the North Country.”

SARANAC LAKE — The investigation into improper monetary transfers by the New York State Attorney General’s Office of The Tri-Lakes Center for Independent Living has been resolved.

A Dec. 1 letter of agreement was signed by both sides, putting an end to the investigation centering on two TLCIL employees borrowing funds for personal use.

Tupper Lake sells land near beach TUPPER LAKE — The town of Tupper Lake sold two properties in the Little Wolf Beach area.

The first, a 5.8-acre vacant lot on Little Wolf Road, was sold to Sherman Lalonde for a price of $26,500. Lalonde was the sole bidder and was just above the minimum bid of $25,000.

The second, a 2-acre lot on North Little Wolf Road, was sold to Michael and Kathy Keniston for $21,600. Four bids were accepted for the property, which had a minimum price tag of $15,000.

Police: TL man shoved lady, drove drunk TUPPER LAKE — A Tupper Lake man is trouble this week after allegedly driving drunk following a domestic dispute.

Tupper Lake-based state police arrested 33year-old Glenn E. Stearns of Tupper Lake at 4:05 a.m. Saturday.

According to reports, troopers responded to reports of a domestic dispute in progress at a residence on Stetson Road. Upon arrival, police learned that Stearns had shoved a pregnant woman to the ground. Troopers say the woman was 26 weeks pregnant.

Stearns also allegedly damaged property at the residence.

But when troopers arrived, Stearns had already left the scene. He was apprehended moments later following a motor vehicle accident on state Route 3 in the town of Harrietstown.

He was ultimately charged with felony driving while intoxicated, operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content greater than .08 percent, second-degree reckless endangerment, and criminal mischief.

Stearns was arraigned in Tupper Lake town court and remanded to Franklin County Jail in lieu of $15,000 cash bail or $30,000 bond.

New Web site for Winter ESG LAKE PLACID — It took less than 24 hours for officials from the Lake Placid region to join forces and save the Empire State Winter Games, and now there’s a new Web site for athletes and visitors interested in finding out more about the popular winter event.

In November, the state said it was pulling funding for both the summer and winter Empire State Games.

But in a matter of hours, the towns of Wilmington and North Elba, the village of Lake Placid, the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism, and the state Olympic Regional Development Authority announced the games were still on.

With infrastructure already in place, officials said hosting the winter games would still be possible at a relatively low cost.

Last week, www.empirestatewintergames.com was launched in order to provide information regarding the games, as well as a portal for athlete registration.

The site was designed by Ad Workshop in Lake Placid. The site also features an event blog and an alumni section.

Saranac Lake looks to update its comprehensive plan

By Chris Morris denpubs@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — It looks like the Saranac Lake Village Board of Trustees will opt to update its 1989 comprehensive plan.

During last week’s regular meeting, trustees voted down a resolution seeking “expressions of interest” regarding consultant services. Those services would be paid for using a $75,000 grant from the state.

In November, trustees expressed major reservations about a draft comprehensive plan that a village committee put together over a four-year period. That plan included public input acquired through surveys and several public hearings.

But Trustee Jeff Branch says the Village Board didn’t play a large enough role in the process.

“I’ve sat in on public hearings where I’ve raised questions as a board member and I was shushed — I was told I couldn’t ask questions,” Branch said.

“I’ve gone to meetings and I begged people to take into consideration everybody’s concerns and comments because if not, it’s going to lead exactly where it’s going now.”

During the pubic comment portion of last week’s meeting, village resident Rich Shapiro said the board didn’t give the

draft plan its due diligence.

“I’m wondering what sort of effective use of village resources this is, in terms of time and dollars,” Shapiro said. “There were people on the board that campaigned heavily on saving taxpayer money, yet there are many things in this plan that have already been done. There’s a draft plan that was torn apart by the board without fully understanding everything that was in there.”

Branch countered that the board does understand the draft comprehensive plan, noting that trustees chose to discard portions of the document that were too subjective and too open to interpretation.

He said useful legislation can’t be built on mere theories and ideas.

Rather than adopt the draft comprehensive plan, Branch wants the village to update the 1989 document.

“My suggestion would be to do the process and do the process right this time,” Branch said. “Let’s update the existing master plan and involve this board and anyone who has to by law vote on and accept it from the get go. Listen to our concerns and listen to our comments. Take them for what they are — as the comments of the people who elected to fairly and equally represent the people of this village.”

Trustee Allie Pelletieri said that because the town of Harrietstown is no longer interested in pursuing a joint plan, any and all references to the town should be cut from the discussion.

“Since the town is not involved, that’s a major issue with the whole plan,” Pelletieri said.

“There’s also many things that have already been done — water meters for example. There were many things in the plan that were someone’s ideas or theories — words like ‘appropriate’ — that doesn’t belong because what’s appropriate to some may not be appropriate for all.”

Pelletieri says the village should use the 1989 plan as a base going forward. He says what works should be left in — while what doesn’t work should be removed.

Trustee John McEneany says he’s still reviewing the draft plan.

“It’s extremely important that somebody goes through these documents line-by-line and leaves as little open for interpretation as possible, because that’s what gets you in trouble,” McEneany said. “I don’t feel at this time that I can support this resolution as I am not done reviewing and altering the document as it sits now.”

During public comment, Ray Scollin said the village needs to get the plan right in order to reflect the general public, noting

that a relatively small cross-section of village residents participated in drafting the plan.

“So if we don’t get it right, then we’re stuck with something that could subject the village to more regulations,” he said.

Mayor Clyde Rabideau says he appreciates the amount of time the committee put into drafting the comprehensive plan.

But he notes that without input from the town, the plan needs to be revised. Rabideau also wants input from the towns of St. Armand and North Elba.

He adds the plan does include some strong points, like increasing density in the village’s downtown and creating healthy infrastructure.

For Rabideau, the board’s nuts-and-bolts approach to the plan is a good thing.

“They want to touch and feel things before they adopt it as law,” Rabideau said. “So when terms like ‘smart growth’ are put out there, they want definition. I respect that.”

Trustee Pelletieri said the board should schedule work sessions in order to provide guidance for Community Development Director Jeremy Evans, who has guided the plan in its current draft form.

Branch said the board should not seek expressions of interest until it has a good working document.

Riley nets 100th three in win

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com KEENE VALLEY — Megan Riley continues to set new heights for the Lady Blue Bombers.

Riley, who already broke the Lake Placid High School girls varsity three-point record earlier this season, netted her 100th triple of her career in the first quarter of the Lady Bombers’ game against Keene on Dec. 29, when her team won by a score of 61-17.

Riley hit the shot on he team’s second possession of the game.

“It was not the plan to get it over with early,” Riley said about the quickness of the record-setting basket. “It just happened in the flow of the first couple of minutes.”

Riley did more than score on the night, connecting for a total of three triples and netting 19 points, but also finished one assist and three steals shy of a quadruple-double, recording 12 rebounds, nine assists and seven steals to go with four blocked shots.

“We are all playing well together and getting along as a team,” Riley said.

Riley, who is also closing in on 1,000 career points, said that she has been pleased with her season so far.

“All of the hard work is really paying off for me and for the team,” Riley said. “There has been a lot of hard work and a lot of practice to be able to reach some of the goals that I have been able to do.”

Mackenzie Kemmerer led the Blue Bombers with 20 points in the game while adding five assists and seven steals of her own.

Ayla Thompson scored 12 points to go with 10 rebounds and six steals, with Catalina Daby adding six points and seven re-

bounds and Hanna Potter scoring four points with four rebounds and four assists.

Benioko Harris scored 18 points to go with 12 rebounds in the win for the Red Storm, while C.J. Stewart added 17 points. Austin McDonough added nine points in the win.

In the girls match, Sabrina Bruce rolled a 497 series (190) and Ashley Rock added a 494 series (182) to lead the Chiefs in a sweep of the Lady Patriots.

CLINTONVILLE — The Patriots scored a total of six wins during the indoor track and field meet Dec. 21, with two victories coming on the boys side and four more on the girls side.

For the girls, senior Sidney Flint won the long jump with a mark of 15 feet, seven inches. Flint also scored a win in the triple jump with a distance of 31 feet, 1.5 inches. She was also apart of the 640-meter relay team which won the event in a time of 1:38, along with Bryce Allen, Kelly McBrearit and Jena Finnegan.

have had the distinct privilege of working with young people for more than 30 years. Anyone who has also had that privilege knows exactly what I mean.

The more you know a child or group of children, the more your heart hurts when they are hurt and the greater the pride when they succeed or grow. Young people have a passion and a hopefulness that cannot be easily defeated and when you are in their light you cannot help being lifted by that sublime energy.

Perhaps, Oliver Wendell Holmes said it best: “Through our great good fortune, in our youth, out hearts were touched with fire. It was given to us to learn at the outset that life is a profound and pasBy Scot Hurlburt sionate thing.”

Young people have the magic to immediately accept you, like you and care about you. If you ever really talked to a young person in a group situation, they won’t ask the tired or vapid questions that many adults ask. They won’t ask where you went college or where you work, these superficial and meaningless questions belong to adults who then often judge a person depending on their answers. Youth often rely much more heavily on unspoken communications.

They are especially gifted at reading body language, facial expressions and changes in voice inflection. They are honest, passionate and hopeful and you might fool them for a little while, but they are so good at judging who is trustworthy that you won’t fool them long. They learn new things with an ease that most adults can only faintly remember.

Their hearts are tender and sincere and they are easily injured.

As easily as they are injured, they are also easily and quickly repaired if given the opportunity. Unlike many adults, young people are quick to change their minds when a better idea is offered up to them.

Some adults are not only intractable in their thinking, they are proud of the fact that they rarely change their mind about anything. Young children often speak a truth that adults wish that they could but cannot due to a variety limiting societal imperatives.

Some time ago, I was standing on the street outside an office building. Several women were smoking cigarettes and talking back and forth. A man with two small children stepped out of the building and immediately began talking on his cell phone. One of the children watched the women puffing on their cigarettes, I think he was amused at the way the smoke curled around their lips and came out of their nostrils.

When the women momentarily halted their conversation, the little boy of about 6 or 7 said, “Did you know that you will die if you smoke cigarettes?” Both women paused, looked curiously at the little boy and smiled.

As the boy walked away with his father, he kept looking back at the women as if he expected them to say, “Thank you for saving our lives or at least trying to.”

In my role as a therapeutic adventure programmer, I am currently working with a fourth-grade class, and they are incredible.

They are the kind of group that you only get once in a while in that they really challenge every skill that you have and at the same time they make you feel like smiling. In the course of our time together, they learned that I am leaving a job that I have held for some time.

The last time that we were together they surprised me with a beautiful sandstone plaque that was signed by each of them. The plaque read, “Make each moment an occasion to live deeply and in peace.”

While I have received many congratulations at this personal milestone, the plaque that I received from the fourth-grade class will be counted as one on my greatest treasures. They are the reason that I and so many others love working with young people.
