Students Compete in Bridge Building Contest TICONDEROGA Ñ Students from the Ticonderoga area showed off their engineering prowess as part of an annual competition sponsored by the local Kiwanis.

57 future engineers competed in the seventh annual model bridge contest, sponsored by the Ticonderoga Kiwanis Club Dec. 13 at the Ticonderoga Elementary/Middle School.

Students from the Ticonderoga Middle School, High School, Crown Point and St. MaryÕ s School participated in the event. Each student participant received a Ò We Build Bridges” T-shirt and a certificate of participation.

Ticonderoga Middle School Principal, John Perreault, welcomed the students to the event and told them of the future of engineering.

Superintendent John McDonald addressed the students prior to the loading of the bridges. He encouraged students to consider a rewarding career in engineering and noted that 20 percent of the high school graduates have enrolled in engineering colleges since the beginning of the Bridge Building Contest.

Graham Bailey, event organizer, presented tokens of appreciation to the teachers who worked with the students for many weeks coaching them on bridge-building techniques.

Those teachers were Jim Marshall, Pam Arzberger, John Lemieux and Paul Jebb.

teams designed their bridges and constructed them out of popsicle sticks during a 1-anda-half hour time limit, then loaded a bucket suspended from their bridge with weights until the bridge collapsed, resulting in some tremendous displays of shattering popsicle sticks.

Ten of the 15 bridges carried loads in excess of 50 lbs. before breaking. Trophies were presented for aesthetics and bridge efficiency (weight of the load the bridge carried prior to failing divided by the weight in ounces of the bridge).

Team The Bucks of Ti Middle School, whose bridge weighed only 4.6 ounces, was the most efficient bridge, carrying a load of 113 lbs. The results were: Middle School Efficiency Awards First: Big Bucks ( Chase Green and James Burke) Second: The Does (Samantha Montville and Ruby Ben-

Third: Bridge Builders of Teriberthia (Lorelei Leerkes, Zoe Eggleston and Molly Price) The high school students designed and built their balsa wood bridges in school as part of Paul JebbÕ s physics class.

This yearÕ s entires included a covered bridge, an arch bridge and several types of truss bridges.

The high school bridges were also judged for efficiency and aesthetics. Six teams competed in the high school part of this yearÕ s contest. The most efficient High School bridge weighing a mere 1.95 ounces carried a staggering 176 lbs.

Numerous members of the Ticonderoga Kiwanis club volunteered at the event including John Bartlett, Jack Bast, Tom Schaffer, Leslie Midgley, Nancy Kelley, Joyce Cooper, Ken Engler amd Don Johnston. Teachers Jim Marshall and his wife Kathy were responsible for the set-up and providing snacks and drinks for the competitors and volunteers.

In addition to the Kiwanis Club of Ticonderoga, Rotary Club of Northern Lake George, Reale Construction, DeFranco Landscaping and the Ticonderoga Teachers Association were also sponsors of the event.

Resolution Run to kick off new year in Ticonderoga TICONDEROGA Ñ Will one of your New Year Õ s resolutions be to get more exercise? If so, the LaChute Road Runners Club of Ticonderoga can help.

The club is planning its 14th annual Resolution Run Jan. 1, 2015.

The event will include a five-kilometer (3.1 miles) run and a four-kilometer (2.5 miles) walk. Both events will begin and

end at the Community Building on Montcalm Street at 11 a.m. At 11:30 a.m. there will be a kilometer race for children age 12 and younger.

The course follows Lake Champlain Avenue to Water Street to Lake George Avenue back to Montcalm Street.

Registration will be that day beginning at 10:15 a.m. at the entrance to Bicentennial Park. Registration fee is $2 or two

food items. All proceeds will be donated to the local food pantry.

Following the run there will be light refreshments and presentation of awards. Awards will be home-baked goods.

The event will be held regardless of weather conditions.

Advent and Christmas services announced TICONDEROGA Ñ The season of Advent continues at the Ticonderoga First United Methodist Church. The Sanctuary has been decorated for the Christmas season including the traditional Advent Wreath with candles, poinsettias and the Nativity adorning the Altar area. All are welcome to join in the services and activities.

Two services will be held as usual Sunday, Dec. 21. Communion will be served at the 8:30 a.m. service. Rev. Scott Tyler will lead the worship service at 10:30 a.m. will have special music presented by the Adult and Junior choirs as well as the bell choirs under the direction of music director, Grace Trombley.

Following the service Sunday, Dec. 21, there will be fellowship coffee with goodies. A group will gather at 12:30 p.m. at the church to go caroling at the Heritage Commons and Lord Howe Estates. All are welcome to go caroling and then return to the church for hot cocoa in fellowship hall.

There will be a Christmas Eve Candle Light Service Wednesday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Special music will be performed and Holy Communion will be served to all. Individual candles will be lit and many Christmas carols will be sung. All are welcome.

The regular services Sunday, Dec. 28, will be at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. will be held. Lay Speaker, Mr. William Westervelt will be leading the 10:30 a.m. service and offering up the message.

Ticonderoga receives infrastructure improvement funding from state

keith@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA Ñ The town has received a pair of awards from the state of New York to help improve an aging infrastructure.

The first was announced as part of the New York State Economic Development Council presentation held Dec. 11 in Albany. The town was awarded $600,000 to make improvements to the Streetroad Water District.

The town projects were among 69 to receive funding through the NCREDC during award presentation held in Albany. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced a total of $709.2 million in economic and community development funding has been awarded through round four of the Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) initiative. Ò The main line has had some issues between Route 74 and Streetroad,Ó Ticonderoga Supervisor Bill Grinnell said. Ò The money has been earmarked to help in the replacement of those areas.Ó On Dec. 12, the state Environmental Facilities Corp. (EFC) unanimously approved a $3.78 million in long-term loans to Ticonderoga to continue work on reducing storm-related overflows from the town’s sewage collection system. Ò When this system was built, the state wanted a combination of wastewater and storm

water treatment which all goes into the plant,Ó Grinnell said. Ò Over the years, everyone has realized that was a mistake and the two needed to be separated. When you get a major storm it can flood the sewers which can trigger overflow in the La Chute or it can flood the plant, which is a similar problem.Ó Grinnell said this was the last step in a process to fund the renovations of the system which included previously approved funding of $3.6 million from EFC and a $1 million grant from the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

Grinnell also said the town is waiting to conduct a pump test on the new Streetroad well, which was recently completed as part of the water system improvement project. Ò We had to wait for the DEC to approve the pump tests, which is scheduled to take place in the immediate future,Ó Grinnell said.

Hague receives funds

The town of Hague was named as one of the award recipients for state funding through the Capital District Regional Economic Development Council, receiving $30,000 to complete an engineering report for waste water treatment system improvements.

State gives Christmas presents early through economic development councils

pete@denpubs.com ALBANY Ñ Ô Twas the fortnight before Christmas, when all through the state, all regions were stirring, awaiting their fate. Their proposals were sent to Albany with care in hopes that St. Cuomo soon would be there.

Last week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo opened his toy bag and showered 10 region economic development councils across the state with $709.2 million in economic and community development funding.

The shower of gold coins came from the fourth round of the Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) initiative, a measure Cuomo spearheaded in 2011 as a way to evaluate and advise the state on which development projects should receive state funding.

$63.4 MILLION Following three consecutive years of coming out on top, the North Country dropped to sixth place, locking down $63.4 million in funds.

In a prepared statement, North Country Regional Economic Development Council Co-Chair Garry Douglas said he realized it was unlikely that the region would take the top prize four years in a row.

But, he noted, the funding will put a number of key priority projects on track for 2015.

Douglas said he felt confident that Cuomo and his team will continue to work with the council on other important regional projects, particularly infrastructure and broadband.

In CuomoÕ s speech prior to the awards, which came after an extended volley of praise from elected officials, the state’s chief

executive said the state had never had an affirmative plan or strategy on how to facilitate economic development, instead relying on Ò scattershotÓ programs that Ò wasted a lot of money, and quite frankly, accomplished very little.Ó Upstate had effectively been abandoned by past administrations, left to languish for decades. Ò WeÕ ve invested more in upstate New York than any state government in history,Ó he said.

On top of the $274 million disseminated to the North Country over the previous three years, this yearÕ s haul brings the region to more than a third of a billion dollars of state investment in the development strategies and priorities that North Country officials have identified and targeted, noted Douglas.

Consider the history before criticizing county over tax hike

f you ever need a barometer to gauge public sentiment, visit any gas station in the North Country between dawn and mid-morning and talk to the coffee-slugging chattering class.

Each town has a chapter. You know who they are.

Last week, the morning after the Essex County Board of Supervisors hit taxpayers right between the eyes with a 7.5 percent tax hike, a gentleman offered an unprintable comment expressing his displeasure.

We canÕ t blame his frustration. But itÕ s a great example of having a selective memory.

Prior to last week’s vote, County Manager Dan Palmer, who also serves as the budget officer, told supervisors the only way to stay under the state-mandated tax cap was to cut services, a measure he admitted would be pilloried by taxpayers.

Lawmakers had already slashed nearly a half-million bucks and were coming dangerously close to hacking away at items that would have measurable, tangible effects on peoplesÕ lives.

Nearly two dozen requests for personnel adjustments were also stopped dead in their tracks, a measure that will undoubtedly affect governmental efficiency as beleaguered staffers — including the folks who process your taxes, register your vehicles, plow your roads and conduct other business that is indispensable to your daily life Ñ will be expected to do the jobs of two or even three people.

Throughout this Palmer, to his credit, wisely advised lawmakers to shore up their rainy day funds, a measure that would require an unpleasant but required spike in taxes Ñ 34 percent over five years — but would also improve the country’s long-term economic outlook.

But this option, too, is now being hammered by taxpayers despite the fact that their tax rate has been relatively flat for the past decade.

In fact, taxes have been held artificially low for the past 10 years.

What weÕ re seeing now is a rubber band effect.

The truth is, the amount homeowners pay in Essex County taxes compared to the services provided is really a heck of a bargain. Essex County taxpayers enjoy the lowest rate in a five county region. Clinton CountyÕ s taxes are exactly double that of Essex County.

Not to mention, without public sector jobs like those offered by the state, schools and county, the North Country would quickly turn into one huge ghost town. Local communities essentially coexist around themselves, with taxes rolling back into local jobs and the local economy.

Next year, the county tax rate is projected to rise to $3.01. ItÕ s currently at $2.81, which means homeowners with $100,000 homes can expect a $20 tax increase.

ThatÕ s a little more than 5-cents a day.

And, 10-years ago, in 2004, that number was actually 28 percent higher at $3.91.

The numbers steadily dropped until 2011, when they hit $1.98, one of the lowest rates in the state.

Despite this, taxpayers continued to enjoy essentially the same amount of services, including the state-mandated items the county has no control over, while county budget officials struggled to make ends meet. Eventually, the only place left to draw from was the countyÕ s surplus and it dipped to dangerously low levels Ñ leaving supervisors with no recourse other than to borrow should an emergency arise.

It was then when the state stepped in and chided the county for adopting budgets for the general fund that were not structurally balanced.

So what youÕ re seeing now is a gradual reversal after years of cruising along on easy street in the face of skyrocketing costs like mandated Medicaid expenses and inflationary health care charges.

Seems like our elected officials just can’t win.

The process is messy and could use some improvements, sure, but Board Chairman Randall Douglas, Palmer, Finance Chairman Thomas Scozzafava and county Attorney Dan Manning should be commended for keeping county taxes flat for as long as they did and for now having the guts to right the ship. Winter pageant says thanks

To the Times of Ti: The PublisherÕ s Column in the Dec. 13, 2014 issue confused and embarrassed me. It was so off the mark that I briefly considered it could be satirical.

The key to our all getting along, a most worthy goal, has at its core the need for us to try to empathize with each other, try to understand what anotherÕ s life is all about. You write that you are struggling to understand what is happening in Ferguson. Have you considered the source of the pent up rage that is finally (and sadly) finding release through some destructive actions? (It is worth mentioning that the vast majority of protests have been peaceful and law abiding.)

My wife is black. She is more intelligent, and better educated than I, and has lived her entire life honestly and in helping ways.

Yet she is always followed in a department store by the plain clothes private security guard. Do you have trouble, Mr. Alexander, understanding her rage? How would you feel in her situation?

You resort to a ploy those of us who try to promote justice have seen hundreds of times. You cite something incidental to the issue as justification for it. An armed officer shot and killed an unarmed teenager! What does that have to do with whether or not he robbed a store (something for which he has not stood trialÉ not been found guilty, except by you)? You cite the Adrenalin soaring through both the police officer and the teenager. But the police are supposedly trained to deal with that, one way is by backing off until reinforcements have arrived. In New York City, where Eric Gardner was choked to death by the police, reinforcements were already there, and it was in clear violation of NYPD policy. But no matter because, as you are quick to mention, he was selling cigarettes illegally!

I agree that there are people who will sometimes cite race inappropriately. But when you look at the arrest records, and the disparity by color in sentencing, here, too, you can understand the rage; but only if you are willing. Perhaps it would open your mind and heart to watch a short video of a (white) police officer asking a (black) man who is parked at a convenience store to produce his driverÕ s license (he was not suspected of having committed any crime). When he reaches in to get his wallet, the officer shoots him in the back.

The Adrenaline did it, right? (huffingtonpost.com/2014/09/25/ sean-groubert-fired-arrested_n_5879694.html). Or the (black) man who was walking down the street on a cold day with his hands in his pockets. He is stopped by a (white) police officer because “he looked suspicious.Ó There are many moreÉ hundreds more.

I hope that, as you Ò É struggle to understand the outrage in FergusonÉ Ò you look beyond your own life, look to history and to the civil rights movement, and try to understand what oppression does to a person. And please stop asking the victims to respect their oppressor.

To the Times of Ti: I would like to thank the community for supporting the nonprofit Royal Winter Pageant. This is our fourth annual year and I hope to continue the pageant for years to come.

The difference in the girls after one year is inspiring. It is changing our girls in such a positive way. Each year every group has a different make up when they first start and by the end all the girls leave with more self - esteem, respectfulness, dedication, and understanding of responsibility. I am honored to be a part of this wonderful opportunity and hope the pageant grows more every year. Next year I will be shaking things up so please come and see the difference.

I would like to thank Walmart, the Wagon Wheel Restaurant, Heather Keegan Forand - HeatherÕ s House Keeping, and Mellisa Sharrow - Cakes by Melissa for donating towards the Royal Winter Pageant. I would also like to thank Ed Hargett - DJ - Music Mania for being our DJ this year. Doug Baker, Judges, Stew Baker, Mr. Whitman, Lisa Tyrell, Myuh Bezio, Aj Borho, Sarah Whitman, Bonna Jose, Kelly Whitman for volunteering.

Stewarts, Walmart, Ticonderoga Federal Credit Union, and McDonalds for allowing us to try and do our community service this year but we were unfortunately not able to do it because of weather.

I also want to thank the town for all of its support. I want to congratulate all the girls for raising $2,054.30 of bottle money.

Half goes towards the cost of the pageant so we can continue to do it again and again. The other half will was split $513.58 each and was donated to Marge Cross and Carolyn Andersen for their strength, determination, and inspiration they brought to us through their time of loss. Their husbands unfortunately passed away before the show and we hope this allows them a little distressing time in their lives right now.

Congratulations to Kathryn Moran who won the community service award for the most amount of bottle money. She raised $321 total and received a $50 gift card donated by Walmart and I canÕ t be prouder. I do want to apologize for some disruption that was caused by a group of students who were attending the show and hope everyone still enjoyed the show and this will be taken care of for next year.

All the girls have done a fantastic job! I hope everyone enjoyed the show and see you all next year!

To the Times of Ti: This is to support the Essex County Board of SupervisorÕ s efforts to take back the cemetery that was used to inter residents of the former Essex County Home. IÕ m not a proponent of eminent domain but in this case, itÕ s appropriate.

People who are buried there were under the care of Essex County the same as those currently residing at Essex Home in Elizabethtown.

Those Souls were our neighbors; Veterans, farmers, business people, widows and widowers. There’s no flag to commemorate Veterans buried there. We must allow access to the general public who may wish to visit and fly the flag to honor the Veterans.

When Essex County built the Horace Nye Home in Elizabethtown, the entire property was turned over to the Essex County Industrial Agency. The cemetery parcel should not have been sold. For some unknown reason it was included in the final sale. Nothing was done to rectify the situation until approximately five years ago. Randy and Vicki Dickerson brought the issue to the attention of the county.

The property owner has allowed access for lawn mowing, but stopped work being done to clear and raise graves so names can be read. In a letter written to the Essex County Board the owner expressed that her attorney has expressed liability concerns with public working at the site.

The cemetery property is of no real estate value. It canÕ t be sold; nothing can be done to raise equity. By holding this property the owner accepts liability because New York State guarantees public access to cemeteries. Absent equitable resolution with the property owner, the County has the responsibility to take the property. This taking will assure proper reverence for those buried there, uphold NYS Law and eliminate liability for the owner.

CV-Tech class helps to create new home for High Peaks Hospice

keith@denpubs.com MINEVILLE Ñ The sounds of construction are welcome at the Essex County IDA Industrial Park in Mineville.

What may be surprising is who is doing the work.

Members of two classes as the Champlain Valley Educational Services Mineville campus have been putting their classroom learning to real-life application, working to build and landscape the future of High Peaks Hospice and Palliative Care.

Members of Kevin ShawÕ s construction trades class have been working on the building, while landscaping work has been done by the members of Tom RodriguezÕ s natural resource conservation class. Ò The Essex County IDA wanted us to help with this building so they could have it ready for a tenant to move in,Ó Shaw said. Ò They approached both classes about the project and they have been a great partner with us along with the contractors.Ó The classes work under lead contractor Schelling McKinley and High Peak Carpentry. Ò Schelly has been great making sure the materials are here the kids need in order to get the work done,Ó Shaw said. Ò We have

been working on the sheet rock and the blow-in insulation in the ceiling. We are also putting in the electric in preparation for the insulation to come and getting a room ready for the plumbing contractor. This has been a good partnership and they have been perfect on what we can deliver.Ó Shaw said working with different sub-contractors and businesses has given the students a chance to see many different parts of a construction project. Ò It gives the students the exposure to other professionals and a feel for what it is like to be in those trades,Ó he said. Ò The scope of a job this big is also important because it allows the students to get repetition in certain skills.Ó Shaw said the project will continue throughout the school year. As a reminder of their accomplishments, he has kept a photographic journal of the progress. Ò A project like this takes so long the kids are learning about being professional and showing up every day and chipping

away, which is pretty crucial to what the trade is about,Ó Shaw said. Ò Every three weeks or so, I will show them the pictures so they see how far they have come.Ó Students from throughout the region are involved with the project from Westport to Schroon Lake and Ticonderoga. Ò It has been good to come in here and learn everything,Ó Moriah junior Neil French said. Ò We have had a bunch of opportunities to learn different things. Originally, I was interested in electrical and wanted to do that, but now I am leaning more towards carpentry.Ó Ò I have been doing dry wall, framing and plywood,Ó Westport senior Matt Schrauf said. Ò Doing the insulation was pretty cool because it is something I have never done before. I think we could build the inside of a house now. It has also been great working with Schell and Hokey (McKinley).Ó The project is expected to be completed by the end of June with the new tenants entering the building in July.

(which was bought out by another company, Actavis, the same week as the decision), and awarded $6.74 million in the wake of Joshua experiencing side effects from Botox injections, given for treatment of cerebral palsy, which caused a severe allergic reactions, resulting in permanent injuries.

The Drakes, which include Joshua and sister Jenna, along with parents Kevin and Lori, now want to make sure others do not have to go through what they did. Ò You need to ask more questions because the physicians do not know,Ó Lori said, stating the family only sued the drug manufacturer and not the doctor who did the procedure because the doctor was instructed through the company. Ò We were never told it was a black label medication, we didnÕ t even know what that meant,Ó Drake said. Ò What they (Allergan) did was train doctors this drug needed to be used at high doses, but at high doses it is not safe. It is hurting people and it is killing people.Ó Drake said families need to learn more about the treatments recommended by doctors before making a decision. Ò Use the web, get documentation, you donÕ t have to make a decision right away,Ó she said. Ò We are very lucky our son is alive. Many others have used this drug and they are not.Ó Drake said the conversation which has come from their case has been the key to getting their story out there. Ò A lot of people have been thanking us and discussing it,Ó she said. Ò Other people have been helping us try to raise awareness. Through this, I would love to be able to help other parents and advocate for their children.Ó

“When we got the first set, what we were told is the injection would hurt, but there would just be a rash,Ó Drake said. ÒA fter the first injection, he didn’t walk the next day. We asked the doctors and they said it probably was because it was the first time he was feeling some of those muscles and they were in spasm.Ó After Joshua received his second set of injections, Lori said she and Kevin started watching their son closely. ÒH e is very healthy all of the time, but he vomited within a couple hours of the injections,Ó she said. ÒT hat indicated to me something was wrong.Ó Things got worse the following morning. ÒT he following day he had chipmunk cheeks,Ó Drake said. ÒT he redness started turning into a deep purple. We gave him some Benadryl and that seemed to help.Ó The family then went to camp in Plattsburgh. ÒT he next morning, the swelling had started already and that is when things went really bad, really fast.Ó The family took him to the emergency room at CVPH where he was treated. ÒI thought he was dying,Ó Drake said. ÒWh en we were allowed to take him home, we didnÕ t let him out of our sight. At this point, we did not know what was going to happen.Ó The Drakes then started to question why their son would become so violently ill. ÒT he only thing different was the Botox,Ó Lori said. ÒT hat is when we started looking for people to help him.Ó As a result of the Botox complications, the family argued in court Joshua has since developed epilepsy and seizures are now a permanent problem.

ÒH e has medicine that he takes twice a day, then he has his emergency meds based on signs and symptoms,Ó Drake said. ÒS ome times he can tell you, like the other night at dinner he just came to us and said, Ô something is wrong, I need my medication now.Õ Other times he cannot and you have to be able to tell how he feels.Ó He must also be constantly accompanied by an aide to deliver life-saving medications in case one of the seizures strikes. ÒT he aid he has at school is an aid he has had since kindergarten who watches him during the day,Ó Drake said. ÒS he knows the symptoms very well and when he does not feel well. His dad or I will drive him to school in the morning and there is one medicine bag that goes hand-to-hand between us and the person responsible for him.Ó The case and decision were handed down by a jury in the U.S. District Court for the District of Vermont, following three weeks of testimony and three days of deliberations. Ò We could have done it in New York (where they live), Vermont (where the injections took place) or California (where Allergan is located),Ó Drake said. Ò We chose Vermont because the case load is much lighter and it would not get backed up.Ó Drake said during the trial, there was one part of the argument she found disturbing. ÒT hey way Allergan would term it, they said the case was not a matter of an overdose, but they would argue it was an over-the-dose issue,Ó she said. The town projects were among 69 to receive funding through the NCREDC during award presentation held Dec. 12 in Albany. Gov.

Andrew M. Cuomo announced a total of $709.2 million in economic and community development funding has been awarded through round four of the Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) initiative.

The town received $19,520 to complete an engineering report to evaluate the addition of effluent disinfection at the town’s wastewater treatment plant.

ter before it filters into Lake Champlain. Ò We are basically de-chlorinating the process,Ó Harrington said.

“We will now do the final filtrations by ultraviolet light, not through the use of chemicals.Ó Ò This will be a comprehensive performance evaluation of the Crown Point wastewater treatment plant and a design of an effluent disinfection system,Ó Essex County Planner Mike Mascarenas said.

“This is part of a larger project to address the capacity deficiencies that exist at the plant, eliminate bacterial loading to the lake, and comply with DEC mandates for installation of disinfection systems.Ó The town had originally received funding for the completion of the project, but would have had to pay for the engineering report.

With this round of funding, the state will completely pick up the tab for the project. Ò The whole project is now covered through state grants and awards,Ó Harrington said.

The town will also be part of a $290,923 award to Essex County for Champlain Valley waterfront improvements.

Mascarenas said there are three parts to the waterfront project in Crown Point. Ò The creation of a local waterfront plan for Crown Point which will allow the community to identify and prioritize needs, define a vision for the future of their waterfront and develop a detailed plan and strategy for implementation,Ó he said. Ò Completion of this Planning process will qualify Crown Point for future funding opportunities for town wide improvements.Ó The project will also implement a landscaping plan for a new pier at Monitor Bay Park. Ò The project will complete the pier project which began in 2010,Ó he said.

Harrington said the town also wants to look at stabilizing the lake shore. Ò We want to work on erosion control between the new retaining wall to the boat launch and stabilize that area,Ó Harrington said. Ò We also want to update our boat launch site. When the water gets low, it can be unaccessable. It is also not accommodating to larger boats and it has a lot of wear and tear.Ó

Our spirits sink, as the days grow shorter. We feel the darkness growing deeper around us. We need encouragement to live the days ahead of us.

Schroon receives funding for park, waterfront

They were part of 69 organizations and municipalities to receive funding through the NCREDC during award presentation held Dec. 12 in Albany. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced a total of $709.2 million in economic and community development funding has been awarded through round four of the Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) initiative.

The first grant will provide $192,500 through the Department of Community Resources to reverse deterioration of the tennis courts and hockey rink at the 15-acre town park. Ò The courts have needed an overhaul for 10 years,Ó Schroon Supervisor Michael Marnell said. Ò We have been doing minor repairs on it, but it cost us $20,000 a couple of years ago to just seal and fill cracks. There are still issues. This project will keep us good for 18-20 years.Ó Marnell said the hockey rink project will be the replacement of the boards along the side of the rink. Ò The rink is about 20 years old and the wooden panels need to be replaced now,Ó he said.

Public Defender Brandon Boutelle went up to bat for him, citing an eight-year marriage with two children.

“If anyone qualifies for supervised release, it would be Mr. Smith,Ó said Boutelle.

Meyer kicked him loose, releasing him on his own recognizance.

In the courtroom, a woman sobbed.

Keeseville resident Scott A. Pelkey, 50, was charged with two counts of criminal sale of a controlled substance third degree and two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance third degree.

Hydrocodone.

Pelkey was remanded to Essex County Jail, where he had already been serving a one-year sentence, in lieu of $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bond.

Martineau noted Pelkey’s “very significant” criminal history dating back to the 1980s, including conviction for burglaries.

ShawÕ s attorney, Alexander Shmulsky, attempted to negotiate a lower bond for whom he painted as an honest family man.

The suspect was reportedly driving to Plattsburgh when he learned he was facing charges, turned around and turned himself in.

But after a criminal history was revealed, including a priordrug related conviction, Meyer remanded Shaw to Essex County Jail in lieu of $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bond.

Christopher J. LaMotte, of Mineville, was brought in on two counts of criminal sale of a controlled substance fourth degree Ñ suboxone Ñ and two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance fifth degree.

An onlooker gasped as the shaggy 19-year-old alledged high school student was brought into the courtroom. Ò Jesus,Ó she said.

LaMotte, who was said to have no immediate family in the area, pled not guilty and was remanded to Essex County Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail or $5,000 bond.

Mineville resident Daytona M. Thompson, 34, was nabbed on two counts of criminal sale of a controlled substance fourth degree Ñ suboxone Ñ and two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance fifth degree.

Thompson, who is unemployed and on benefits, was remanded to Essex County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond.

Her background also contained a misdemeanor charge of criminal contempt.

Jessica L. Cossey, 28, is currently incarcerated in Essex County Jail.

She was supposed to be released Jan. 2.

But she was charged with two counts of criminal sale of a controlled substance fourth degree Ñ like the others, allegedly subutex and suboxone Ñ and two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fifth degree.

Cossey, who is five-months pregnant, was remanded to Essex County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond.

ONGOING PLAGUE In June, the state passed a raft of legislation designed to combat the growing opiate problem.

New York State Police Captain Robert LaFountain told the Valley News that his office has received additional resources to fight the epidemic. Ò If you look at the charges,Ó he said, Ò you will see prescription medication and illicit narcotics are still plaguing this area.Ó LaFountain said itÕ s a problem that transcends all aspects of society, whether health or criminal State police will continue to work in conjunction with local departments and the District Attorney’s office to address the issue.

LaFountain declined to say when the last time a dragnet of low-level arrests picked up a big fish.

However, he did note that overdoses within Troop B are on the rise, doubling since 2012.

Numbers have just started to level off, he said.

Following the bundle of bills approved by Gov. Cuomo in June, 161 state troopers now carry naloxone, an overdose antidote, including seven sergeants, one investigator, and one dispatcher. Ò It is our hope that our efforts that you witnessed here today may save someoneÕ s life,Ó he said.

Earlier this week, Ticonderoga Supervisor Bill Grinnell complained about what he called Ò drug taxis.Ó Social services recipients were using county coin to hire cars to ferry them back and forth to stock up on illicit substances, he claimed.

Asked about the issue, LaFountain said authorities, including the Essex County Sheriff’s Department and the DA’s office, are looking into their relationship with the Department of Social Services. Ò Additional charges may be pursued if violations of the law are established,Ó he said.

Shortly afterward, state police said in a statement that an investigation into possible welfare fraud will be conducted by the District Attorney’s Office, the Essex County Department of Social Services and the state police to determine if any of the defendants engaged in additional criminal activity related to public assistance benefits.

Participating agencies in todayÕ s raid included state police, the Essex County SheriffÕ s Department and the Lake Placid, Moriah and Ticonderoga Police Departments.

THE DRUGS Buprenorphine, which is sold under the brand names subutex and suboxone, is an FDA-approved and regulated semi-synthetic opioid designed to treat opiate addiction by transitioning addicts onto a regulated replacement before weaning them off completely.

While experts largely agree buprenorphine is an effective treatment against heroin addiction, it also carries a high potential for misuse.

According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, about one million Americans are addicted to heroin alone and another 1.4 million people dependent on or abusing all other opioids.

The drugs are typically sold in individual packaged film strips that dissolve underneath the tongue.

Prescriptions have skyrocketed in the past decade, pushing out the previously utilized methadone, which was first developed in the 1960s. Ò This region has seen a surge in heroin use in recent years and prescription medication remains a significant problem,” said LaFountain.

Doug Terbeek, Director of the Ticonderoga-based Prevention Team, cited a local group that has been meeting for over a year with the goal of disseminating info to community members and supporting law enforcement officials.

By law, buprenorphine is only supposed to be prescribed in context of treatment situation, he noted.

Since spring, he said his office has seen a decrease in false reports of prescription theft.

Addicts would claim to physicians that their prescriptions had been stolen with the hopes they would be written a new one.

But that practice has been curbed. Ò Something says thatÕ s working,Ó he said.

State to begin recertification process for pistol permits johng@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN Ñ As part of New York StateÕ s Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement, or SAFE Act, holders of pistol permits will soon be required to recertify their permits with the state police or face having them revoked.

The state police will roll out a pilot of the program next month in the counties of Albany, Schenectady and Fulton with the ultimate goal of having all pistol permit holders recertified by Jan. 30, 2018 and then again every five years thereafter.

Following the pilot, recertification letters will be mailed out from the state police to the remaining permit holders. Following recertification the pistol permit holder will be required to carry a plastic recertification card with his or her permit. Refusal to recertify will result in revocation of the permit.

The objective of the recertification process is to identify anomalies on permits Ñ such as outdated addresses and incorrect serial numbers. It will also be used to cross check against state and federal data bases to determine if an individual is currently prohibited from possessing firearms, said Director of Public Information for the New York State Police Darcy Wells.

The recertification process will also be used to determine wether a pistol permit owner is deemed not mentally stable and therefore should not be in the possession of a handgun.

A provision of the SAFE Act encourages health care professionals like doctors, nurses and psychiatrists to report those who may be of harm to themselves or others. Health providers are not required by the law to get an individualÕ s consent before making such a report, and it is then up to local courts to act on the information.

To date, health providers have reported nearly 40,000 such individuals in New York as being at-risk, with 278 of these identified as being pistol permit holders — all of whom are at risk of having their pistol permits revoked during recertification.

Nevertheless, there are a number of legal means of challenging the actions and determinations of licensing authorities, Wells said, and noted that a revocation as a result of a health provider report may not necessarily be permanent.

A person can also reapply, she said.

Locally, in Essex County, 79 people have been reported so far,

with three holding a pistol permit; 217 have been identified in Clinton County with one individual possessing a pistol permit; 68 have been identified in Franklin County with one holding a pistol permit; five were reported in Hamilton County with none possessing a pistol permit and 229 have been reported in Warren County with four having pistol permits.

The SAFE Act was passed at the urging of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in response to the mass shootings of schoolchildren at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn and firefighters in New York. It took effect March 16, 2013.

Along with the recertification of pistol permits, the new law banned certain semi-automatic rifles, handguns and shotguns; demanded registration of certain so-called Ò assaultÓ weapons already owned and attempted to decrease the allowable size of ammunition magazines, though that section was later struck down as unconstitutional.

Essex County Pistol Permit Clerk Stephanie DeZalia said the goal of the recertification includes keeping records of pistol permit holders updated every five years.

While the state troopers have the lead on the process Ñ including obtaining the submission of an application in either paper or electronic form; reviewing the application and then approving it or forwarding it on to a judge for potential revocation Ñ county clerk offices will be responsible for correcting problem areas on permits, DeZalia said.

That will most likely increase workloads for local clerks as foot

traffic increases as a result, noted DeZalia.

Matthew Morrison, who said he holds a pistol permit in Clinton County, said he is disgruntled with the process and said it is another example of the state harassing law abiding gun owners. Ò They make you go through this entire process when you originally get the permit - background checks and the like, and if you commit a crime, the court is made aware and they come after your permit at that time,Ó he said. Ò So what exactly is this accomplishing?Ó Morrison said he is concerned that the licensing process will eventually apply to long guns as well, driving up the cost of hunting rifles and ammunition.

Unless there is a cost at the county level, the state does not plan to charge for recertification, Wells said.

The county, according to DeZalia, will charge $3 for each amendment to a permit.

While state troopers have yet to go live with a website dedicated to the recertification process, that will likely occur in the near future, Wells said.

TICONDEROGA Ñ The Ticonderoga Federal Credit Union (TFCU) is again offering local high school seniors the opportunity to win several scholarships toward tuition at a two or fouryear accredited college.

TFCU student members will be competing with high school students from credit unions statewide for $1,000 Credit Union Association of New York awards. In addition, they will be competing regionally within the Adirondack District for a $500 scholarship, and locally among TFCU members for $500 scholarships. Five $500 TFCU scholarships were awarded in 2014.

To be eligible, students must be college-bound high school seniors at the time of application, attending college for the first time in the fall of 2015, and members of the Ticonderoga Federal Credit Union.

Applicants will be judged based upon their academic achievements, extracurricular and community activities and the quality of a written essay. The infamous RogersÕ Rangers played an important role in the French and Indian War history of Fort Ticonderoga. Despite the numerous accounts of them spying on the French encampments and their attacks on wood-cutting parties, their clothing and appearance is something of a mystery. Artificer Tailor Gibb Zea will discuss and translate the documentation known about the rangers to give a better idea of what they wore, how they wore it, and what textiles one might expect to find on a ranger in the 1750s.

A focus on the clothing will revolve around the appearance of Rogers and his men as they would have appeared to the large French scouting party that they met March 13, 1758, the day of the Battle on Snowshoes.

Schroon Lake sweeps D-III openers against Crown Point

CROWN POINT Ñ The Schroon Lake varsity girls and boys basketball teams opened the 2014-15 Division III season in the Northern Basketball League with a pair of wins against longtime Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference rivals in Crown Point.

While the games were contrasting styles of play with the Lady Wildcats earning a low-scoring, defensive win and the boysÕ team scoring 60 in victory, but put the teams at the top of the standings in the early season.

The Crown Point Lady Panthers fell to the Schroon Lake Wildcats in an exceptionally low scoring game, 19-9, Dec. 11.

The scorers for the Panthers were Shawna McIntosh with 4 points, 2 steals and 1 rebound; Logan Harrington with 2 points and 4 steals; and Heather Ryan with 2 points and 2 steals.

Bailey Noel was also a major player with 1 point, 4 steals and 6 rebounds.

The WildcatsÕ leaders were Molly Wisser with 7 points, 4 steals, and 7 rebounds; Dakota Gadway with 6 points and 8 rebounds; and Alora Bearor with 4 points, 2 steals, and 4 rebounds.

Katie Botterbush was also a contributor with 2 points, 1 steal and 2 rebounds.

The scoring frustration was visible for both teams. The second half scoring attempts for the Panthers doubled; as a team, they shot 1-for-18 in the first half and 2-for-32 in the second half.

The rest of their points came from their foul shots which they shot 3-for-12 throughout the matchup.

In the boys game, the Wildcats jumped out to a 15-0 lead after eight minutes of play and never looked back in scoring the win, their fourth of the season overall.

Tanner Stone and Aiden Finnerty each scored 15 points in the win, while Alex Shaughnessy added 9, Joe Maisonville 9, Branden Hall 8, Jordan DeZalia 2 and Derek DeZalia 2.

For the Panthers, Kolby Pertak led the offensive attack with 8 points, with Jamie LaDeau, Chad Stephens and Jacob Norton scoring 6 points. Hunter Pertak, Noah Macey and Chance Potter each scored 2 points.

LAKE LUZERNE Ñ A 33-7 opening half of play gave the Wildcats all the breathing room they would need in defeating Section IIÕ s Hartford Dec. 12.

Joe Maisonville led the Wildcats with 21 points in the game, while Alex Shaughnessy added 19, Tanner Stone and Branden Hall 10, Jordan DeZalia 4 and Aiden Finnerty 2.

TICONDEROGA Ñ The Sentinels were able to hold on after building a 38-22 halftime lead to defeat the Lions Dec. 12. Ò Both teams played hard throughout,Ó Sentinel head coach Joe Defayette said. Ò It was a game of runs. We had a 10 point lead with two minutes remaining and we were able to do just enough to hold off Etown. Zac (Noka Bailey) was impressive, we had a hard time keeping him out of the paint. If he wasnÕ t scoring he was keeping the ball alive on the offensive glass.Ó Colvin Chapman combined 23 points and 12 rebounds, while Marick Ross added 11 points, Brody Rocque 9, Evan Graney 7, Garrison Hughes 6, and Brett Mosier 5 to go with eight rebounds.

ELIZABETHTOWN Ñ The Lady Lions avenged an early season loss at the AlzheimerÕ s Awareness Tournament by leveling the season series against the Lady Sentinels with a victory Dec. 12.

Nicole Fuller led the Sentinels with 8 points, with Delany Hughes adding 6, Haleigh Wright 4, Savannah Bezon 3, Paige Gunning 2 and Hannah Ross 2.

Boys Bowling Ticonderoga 10, NCCS 0

TICONDEROGA Ñ The Sentinel bowling team rebounded from their first loss of the season with a sweep over Northeastern Clinton Dec. 15, upping their regular season record to 44.5-15.5.

Cole Frasier started out strong with six straight strikes as part of a 226 game and added a 223 game as part of a 645 series. William Gonyo had the top game of the day for the Sentinels, rolling a 10-frame total of 244 as part of a 544 series. Anthony Paige added a 562 (205) series, while Zachary Bush added a 548 (189), Connor Lauzon 539 (202), Gavin Fleury 497 (188) and Duncan Bain 446 (161). Other top games included a 175 from Garrett Ross and a 160 from Darby Guay.

AuSable Valley 9, Ticonderoga 1

Au SABLE FORKS — The Sentinels suffered their first setback of the season Dec. 12, earning only one point against a young but talented Patriots squad.

Despite the loss, the Sentinels record remained solid at 34.515.5.

PORT HENRY Ñ The Vikings (1-39) were unable to come away with a point in falling to the Eagles Dec. 12.

Tanner Conley was the top bowler for the Vikings with a high game of 191 and 481 series, while Toot Whalen added a 161 game as part of a 455 series.

TICONDEROGA Ñ The Lady Sentinels took the majority of points against Northeastern Clinton Dec. 15, bringing their season record to 16-8.

of the match-high 531 series. Cassidy McKee added a 457 (157) series, with Lucy Lapeter rolling a series of 447 (185). Samantha Gonyo added a high game of 152, while Cerise Bush had a high game of 153.

Au SABLE FORKS Ñ The Lady Sentinels swept through the Lady Patriots in a battle of Revolutionary soldier-mascots to up their season record to 13-7 Dec. 12.

Cerise Bush paced the Sentinels with a 254 high game and 587 series, while Cheyanne Tuthill added a 564 series with 212 game, along with a 441 series (188) from Samantha Gonyo and 416 series from Cassidy McKee.

PORT HENRY Ñ Carly NewtonÕ s 169 high game and 415 series were tops for the Lady Vikings (6-14), who were unable to come away with a point against the Lady Eagles Dec. 12.

Moriah basketball teams make strong statement in Div. II openers

keith@denpubs.com PORT HENRY Ñ The Moriah girls and boys varsity basketball teams made their case known for repeating as the Section VII/ Class D champions in 2014/15.

The pair of basketball squads pulled off impressive wins against Westport Dec. 12 and Dec. 13, using strong defense and timely scoring in the wins.

After jumping out to a 14-7 lead through the first eight minutes of play Friday, the Lady Vikings used a 20-7 second quarter, capped by an 8-0 run in the final three minutes to pull away for a 50-27 victory. Ò We are back on track for this year,Ó point guard Caitlin Pelkey said. Pelkey finished with five points along with 10 assists, six rebounds and six steals. Ò We want to make it as far as we did last year and then take the next step.Ó “This is the first step to get back to where we were,” center Madison Stahl (27 points, 7 rebounds, 3 blocked shots) said.

The Lady Vikings were able to hold the Eagles down defensively, something the players and head coach Steve Pelkey said was a priority.

“In the first half our defensive intensity was great,” coach Pelkey said. Ò It was a nice start to defending a title. We knew it would be a tough game and Westport is a good squad.Ó Ò Everyday we work hard on defense in practice because you can have an off night on offense but there is no excuse for an off night on defense,Ó Caitlin Pelkey said. Ò We work hard because we know in the post we have to box out and work for every rebound,Ó Stahl said.

Pelkey and Stahl were joined by guard Lauren Cross, who scored 9 points on a trio of three-pointers while adding three steals defensively. Ò These three have played together since elementary school and they have a second sense of where they are,Ó coach Pelkey said. Ò They have an inner-connection.Ó Shelby MacDougal added four points and four rebounds, while McKenna Harris had three points and three rebounds and Halee Calabrese had two points, one rebound and one steal. Jordan Speshock added four rebounds.

Depth wins out

The following day, the Vikings boyÕ s team won each quarter against the Eagles en route to a 71-43 victory.

The team was able to use depth to its advantage, running all 15 players out during the course of the game. Ò I have some strong kids on the second unit that can play and that is nice to have,Ó head coach Brian Cross said. Ò Players like Chris Clarke, Billy Larrow and Joe Stahl can come in an contribute. The kids know their roles and we are going to go out and play hard in every game.Ó Ò Our goal is to keep the lead and give the starters a break so if the game gets close, they can come back and open it up again,Ó Clarke said. Ò Our defense is good and we were able to run with the ball.Ó Ò ItÕ s great to have people who can come in and contribute,Ó starting guard Taylor Slattery said.

Slattery and center Adam Jaquish each scored 18 points, while Slattery added six rebounds, four assists and four steals while Jaquish had 20 rebounds, five assists and three steals.

In all, the Vikings out-rebounded Westport, 55-27. On the offensive glass, the difference was 27-4. Ò We always try to establish inside early then we can get the ball out to our shooters,Ó Jaquish said.

Slattery held a 3-1 lead over Jaquish in one category: dunks. Ò ItÕ s good when we get out in transition to see Taylor go up,Ó Jaquish said. “It gets the team and the crowd fired up.”

Jarrod MacDougal added 10 points, with Ryan Jaquish scoring six points along with four rebounds. Five players scored three points each with Todd Clarke also adding three rebounds, Chris Clarke two steals, Cody Stockwell four rebounds, Sam Russo adding one assist, rebound and steal; and Chuck Bryant three rebounds. Billy Larrow and Dylan Trombley each had two points and two rebounds.

While not everyone scored, all 15 players found themselves on a stat line, with Noah Gilbo passing for a pair of assists, Joe Stahl adding two rebounds and two assists, Jarron Boyle grabbing a pair of boards and Hayden Fernandez also recording two rebounds.

ell, I finally got out there! I’d been patiently awaiting the first ski trip of the New Year, since the beginning of Big Game season, Unfortunately, Mother Nature appeared very leery about inviting Old Man Winter back through the door.

In fact, there was less than a week of decent tracking snow, the entire hunting season.

I had not even bothered to get my skis out of the garage, until the recent storm delivered over two feet of snow across the region.

While most of the regionÕ s downhill ski centers now have adequate snowmaking capabilities, the Nordic folks still rely on nature to provide their pleasures. And what a pleasure it was.

Although the heavy snow took down a lot of trees, and de-limbed many more, while the fresh snow also served to whitewash the remaining remnants of autumn.

Despite the regular labors required of a wintry onslaught, such as shoveling, plowing, and clearing away the mess of the passing plow trucks; I decided to embrace the opportunity.

The effort required a bit of investigation in order to locate my skis, boots, poles, wax, gloves, scrapers and other essential items, but it was worth it.

The trip required me to pass over a small, nearby knob, which proved easier than expected. All appeared to be going quite well until I entered a short patch of tall pines that lined a long, fairly level ridge that borders a small swamp.

The day was fair, and yet the sky was grey as I left the house. After maneuvering across a small stream, I ascended the ridge and began plowing through the deep snow. In certain places it was nearly thigh deep, while elsewhere conditions were actually somewhat scratchy, especially in the hemlock and white pine forests.

It wasnÕ t so cold that trees were popping; however limbs were constantly crashing to the forest floor under the weight of the new snow.

The crashing of limbs was yet another hindrance I hadnÕ t even considered. In places, downed limbs obliterated the trails entirely As I transitioned from swamp level to the more open hardwoods, the snow cover became more consistent, and deeper. About halfway up the small hill, I decided to shed the skiis in favor of snowshoes. The snowbase was simply not supporting my weight, and I was struggling to climb in the wet heavy conditions.At first, the snow weighted heavy on the Ô shoes, but after cleaning them off and dousing them with a heavy dose of WD40, the going got much easier.

I climbed higher through the open hardwoods and worked my way around the eastern slope of the ridge,

where the snow pack was less than half the depth of the western exposures.

With nearly three miles of steady elevation gain behind me, I finally made my way through the frost covered spruce thickets and arrived at a small clearing atop the intended ridge. The journey had taken far longer than I had expected, and I was still facing a rather steep and trackless return trip.

Following a fast lunch, and a change back to skis, I stowed the gear into the pack and set off.

Snow cover wasnÕ t nearly as deep up high, and I was sheltered by a thick spruce forest. The snow pack was firmer and faster, and I made good time on the descent.

From the far edge of the ridge, I could just about see my house far in the distance. I descended through a natural chute and came out into a large open bowl, that was sprinkled with hardwood saplings.As it was beginning to grow dark, I took a fairly straight line along the edge of the bowl, where I discovered a fresh set of ski tracks leading straight down the hill.

I linked into the tracks, and picked up speed. The snow was deep, and my legs were sore but my face was crossed with a grin that spread from ear to ear.

As I raced through short sections of saplings, scattered among the towering hemlocks, I struggled to control my speed.Finally, I made it down to the flats, where I managed to cross yet another stream unscathed.A short while later, I found myself staring down two miles of rails that were fortunately tracked and packed by an untold number of snowmobiles. So, I set off once again, with heavier legs, a sore back and a wider grin. It was a great way to welcome in the new season, and to usher out the last.The following morning, I skied back into hunting camp to haul out a few loose items. The snow was deep, the woods quiet and my legs still stiff.

IÕ ve learned to welcome the winter season. have coined this column for more than two decades and rarely have taken the opportunity to endorse a service or product. However, I stumbled across a device this hunting season that should be under every camouflaged Christmas tree.

Those who have frequented my hunting camp know my fond affinity for food and for cooking said aforementioned food. I wear the hat of camp cook and am always dabbling with different marinades to accentuate the taste of meats and fish and looking for methods to tenderize wild game meat.

This season, I had the opportunity to try out a product called the Marinade Express and I have absolutely no reservations recommending it to outdoorsmen or any cooking aficionado. The product uses a specially formulated process called “vacuum tumbling” to open cellular structures in meat and fish and quickly and efficiently infuse foods with marinade.

The result is super tasting food with amazing tenderness. The machine is also super easy to use. Simply load the provided drum with your favorite wild game meat, fish, poultry, vegetables or a combination of these; add your favorite marinade, screw on the lid and the machine does the rest.

A small hose is inserted into the drum and the air is vacuumed out, drawing the marinade through the food. The drum and the food therein is then spun by the Marinade Express. A divider inside the drum constantly rotates the contents through the marinade. Most foods Ñ even roasts Ñ are ready to cook in 20 minutes or less. Gone are the days of using a meat mallet to tenderize and then soaking foods in marinade for a day or more.

At the same time, because meat, fish and poultry gain moisture through the process, cooking time is reduced by up to 20 percent. It even extends the shelf life of foods by eliminating nearly all bacteria that can cause spoilage and foodborne illness. Meat and fish can be infused with marinade, packaged and frozen for meals at a later date.

Fellow outdoor writer Tom Schlichter, who is helping market the Marinade Express, recently contacted me to say that the product Ñ when used in combination with MX Marinades sold by the same company Ñ reduces the amount of mercury in fish by up to 50 percent. That is great news for anglers who fish in designated waters that contain an advisory on mercury levels.

The state cautions anglers not to eat more than one meal a month of fish caught from waterbodies such as Schroon Lake and Lake Champlain, for example. Marinating fish in the Marinade Express, combined with the specially formulated MX Marinades Ñ reduces the health risk associated with eating fish from these bodies of water. Ò WeÕ ve been working on a solution to reduce high levels of mercury in seafood like cod, tuna, swordfish and freshwater favorites like walleye, trout and catfish,” said Marinade Express company president, Dan Neumann. Ò We partnered with the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Dr. John Ejnik during an extensive four-year research program and are now happy to announce the results: Not only does the Marinade Express significantly reduce mercury in fish - it does so using natural ingredients.”

The removal of methylmercury from fish is accomplished by adding select ingredients to the MX Marinade formulas, which are mixed in water and placed in the drum of the Marinade Express. These ingredients bond with mercury and wash out during the rotation of the drum. In all, there are over 20 flavors of MX Marinade to choose from. My personal favorite is the teriyaki.

The Marinade Express retails for $299 and comes with a 10-pound drum and includes a starter pack of MX Marinades. Additional marinade packets as well as a larger 20-pound Ò chefs drumÓ that can tumble bigger portions such as a whole turkey or large roast are available for an additional cost.
