SCHROON Ñ Schroon Lake Central School has started to lay the groundwork for finding its next chief administrator.

After a public hearing on the matter, members of the school board met Dec. 2, and Dec. 8, to discuss the timetable for hiring a new Superintendent of Schools.

Interim Superintendent James Polunci said after the public meeting, the board made the decision to proceed in finding a person to fill the position of Superintendent/ Principal.

“We did the presentation and the board decided to go with the current option,” Polunci said. “We had about 35-to-40 people at the meeting and I would say it was a split crowd between the status quo and looking at another model.”

During the Dec. 2, meeting, the board met with Dr. Mark Davey of Champlain Valley Educational Services, who will help lead the search for a new administrator. Davey told the board it was the goal of CVES to conduct the search in a timely manner and bring quality candidates to the table for the district to consider. He added they will strive to meet all deadlines.

CROWN POINT — The new Crown Point Art Gallery is hosting the works of North Country Community College students over the winter months.

The gallery, located in the renovated Knapp Senior Center, will display charcoal, digital and photography art from students at each of NCCCÕ s three campuses - Saranac Lake, Malone and Ticonderoga. Ò We are the only gallery who will be hosting these works other than the three campuses,” gallery director Betty LaDeau said. “These are some sensational exhibits which we will have throughout the winter months.”

The gallery will host an opening for the exhibit Monday, Dec. 15, from 1 until 5 p.m., weather permitting. The exhibit will then be open to the public on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1 until 5 p.m. from Tuesday, Dec. 16 until March 1.

TiNADA asks public to join their mission

TICONDEROGA — A local group hoping to help in the fight against drug abuse in the area are ramping up their efforts.

Doug Terbeek, Executive Director of the Prevention Team and member of Ticonderoga Neighbors Addressing Drug Abuse, said that the coalition has had a slow fall season and is hoping the upcoming months will show progress from the team.

TiNADA usually meets on the second Tuesday of every month, but due to inclement weather will be rescheduling their meeting during the week of Dec. 15.

The group’s mission statement is to increase residents’ knowledge of local drug abuse problems, provide support for law enforcement, and promote effective prevention, treatment and health services to create a drug free community where families can live

a healthy lifestyle and feel safe.

Terbeek said that some projects that have been discussed during the coalition’s meetings have already took on a life of their own; conversations that started during a TiNADA meeting has now resulted in Ticonderoga taking on a K9 unit and the town moving towards a taxi ordinance in which a public hearing is scheduled in the near future. Terbeek seems to feel that though the coalition has had a slow couple of months, it seems that the town is making strides in harmony with the group’s goals.

“There has been a decrease recently in reports with theft of presciptions, that frequency has decreased which is good,” said Terbeek.

At the next TiNADA meeting, the coalition will discuss upcoming forums and future activities as well as finalize their logo. Last spring, students from Ticonderoga submitted logo drawings. The coalition picked the

winner and gave that drawing to a graphic artist whose designs will be reviewed at the next meeting.

Terbeek believes having a diverse group of people with varying perspectives on the battle against drugs will help the coalition reach their goals.

“This issue impacts people differently and some of that is contingent upon what they do in their life,” said Terbeek. “A nurse or school teacher’s experience will be different than a pharmacist or person down the street who is just trying to keep their kids safe.”

The main concern of TiNADA is to get the word out, and that this problem is one that “sneaks up on most people and often starts out with a legitimate prescription.”

TICONDEROGA — Once again, scholarship, leadership and talent were honored and celebrated at Ticonderoga’s 52nd annual Distinguished Young Woman local scholarship program held Saturday, Nov. 1.

Originally started by the Jay Cees in January 1963, Ticonderoga’s program has offered more than 350 young women the opportunity to share in more than $200,000 in scholarship awards.

From the Class of 2015, nine outstanding, talented and creative young women presented a program that demonstrated their creativity, vitality and personality as they competed for more than $2,200 in scholarship awards.

As with programs at the state and national levels, participants competed in five categories including a scholastic review, individual panel interview, group fitness and self-expression, and an individual talent presentation.

Lillith Ida, daughter of Carolyn and Pat Ida of Ticonderoga, was selected as the Distinguished Young Woman of Ticonderoga for 2015. She also was the recipi-

ent of the Scholastic, Fitness and Talent category awards. Nicole Fuller was also selected as first runner-up.

Additional category award recipients included Michaela Fitzgerald - Self-Expression Award; Naomi Forkas - Spirit Award; and Josie Worley - Be Your Best Self Award.

Also participating in this year’s program were Lucinda LaPeter, Sarah West, Constance Bailey, and Georgette Fazioli.

Ida will now represent Ticonderoga at the New York State Distinguished Young Woman Program in January 2015 in Cohoes.

At the local program, important changes were also introduced regarding the future of the local scholarship program. Beginning with the Class of 2016 – the current junior class – the Distinguished Young Woman program will now be offered as an opportunity during the spring of the Junior year. This revised timeline is being implemented because the New York State finals program is reorganizing its operations in order to better mirror what is happening in other states

across the country. New York State-level programs will now happen sooner than ever before – in the summer before the senior year.

Locally, this means the next local program must be completed before Memorial Day in order to have a representative for the next New York State finals program.

Practices will begin in late January or early February for the next local program with an April local program.

Ticonderoga DYW committee members this year included Lori Clark, Marge Cross, Tracey Cross-Baker, Susan Hayes, Amy Schryer, Karen Sharkey-Bennett, Brooke Taylor and Kye Turner. Essex County passes 2015 budget with 7.5 percent levy increase

pete@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — The Essex County Board of Supervisors passed their 2015 budget Tuesday, Dec. 9.

Taxpayers will now see a 7.5 percent tax levy increase following an all-day session designed to shine a final light on possible savings.

County Manager Dan Palmer had originally delivered a 9.5 percent proposed increase to lawmakers as part of his five-year plan designed to reduce the board’s reliance on their fund balance.

The amount to be levied by taxes is $20,061,818 with an effective tax rate of $3.01.

Palmer said the majority of the levy — about $17 million — comes from uncontrolled state costs.

“We have no say,” he said.

The board spent much of the day discussing amendment requests from department heads — most were shuffled to a salary sub-committee slated to be helmed by Willsboro Supervisor Shaun Gillilland — and what to do with the funds peeled from contract agencies and projected savings derived from defeated resolutions.

Among the most notable defeats was Sheriff Richard Cutting’s request to hire six deputies for increased road patrols.

Lawmakers indicated they would be open to such a measure in the future, but only after further study.

Residents Richard Holroyd and Diane Kirby, of Wilmington, agreed: “Folks, you have to do something,” Kirby urged lawmakers.

Kirby said high property taxes paired with few job opportunities resulted in a double whammy for county residents.

“People are struggling. Each and everyone could be responsible for someone losing their home. Sometimes that $40 is all it takes and they can’t do it anymore. They wave their white flag of surrender and they’re done.”

Lawmakers opted for a compromise solution as what to do with the some $514,000 in found money.

About $370,000 went to reduce the tax levy,

while $163,000 was applied to the fund balance.

Palmer had advocated putting all of it towards the fund balance, the keystone of his five-year plan.

“It’s a good budget,” he said following the hearing. “We reduced fund balance use a little bit.

Overall, it’s fair.”

The total budget comes in at $92,661,107.

Board of Supervisors Chairman Randy Douglas commended county officials on their work and said they deserved recognition from their constituents.

“Not everyone got what they wanted,” said Douglas, “but it was fair and we did what our people elected us to do.”

First United Methodist youth to present Christmas story TICONDEROGA — The children and teachers of the First United Methodist Church Sunday School invite everyone to their annual Christmas play and reception Sunday, Dec. 14, during the 10:30 a.m. service.

The worship service, featuring the play will be held in Fellowship Hall at the church, 1045 Wicker Street.

The regular 8:30 a.m. service with communion will be held as usual.

“The Christmas Story,” by Pauline Spray, will be told in Scripture readings, pantomime and song.

“The Sunday School children and teachers have been rehearsing for many weeks and each child will be wearing a costume,” said Kim Powers, Sunday School Superintendent.

Refreshments will be served immediately after the service and play.

Record number to compete in bridge building contest Dec. 13 TICONDEROGA — Begun in 2009 with a few students from St. Mary’s and Ticonderoga Middle School, the Kiwanis Bridge Building Contest has grown each year.

On Dec. 13, 70 middle school and high school students are preparing to build and test their bridges at the Ti Middle School. In addition to the High School, future engineers from Ticonderoga

Middle School and St. Mary’s will compete in the sixth annual Bridge Building contest.

The bridge building contest was originally created to stimulate interest among students in science and engineering and also to demonstrate the benefits in working in teams. design and construction. The Ticonderoga Middle School has again volunteered to host the contest.

The middle school students build model bridges out of Popsicle sticks during a 1-1/2 hour time limit and then load a bucket suspended from their bridge with weights until the bridge collapses, resulting in some tremendous displays of shattering Popsicle sticks.

Awards are to be presented for aesthetics and bridge efficiency (weight of the load in pounds the bridge carried prior to failing divided by the weight in grams of the bridge).

High School students will design and construct their bridges from balsa wood prior to the contest under the guidance of physics and chemistry teacher Paul Jebb. They will be judged and tested at the contest. Jebb has formatted a portion of his physics class to focus on the elements of bridge design. High school students are invited to The Kiwanis Bridge Building Contest will take place Saturday, Dec. 13, at the Ticonderoga Elementary/Midcompete in the Capital District dle School.

n these waning weeks of 2014, the U.S. news media has been consumed by its 24/7 coverage of racial strife, including Missouri riots and New York protests over alleged police brutality and the deaths of two black citizens. And just as the gloom of our nation’s failed foreign policy, its immigration and health care debacles, come home to roost and promise to turn 2014 into one of the worst years since—well—1968, a government agency, of all things, comes to our rescue and pulls America’s wounded pride from the fire yet again.

As you may recall, NASA’s space efforts not only saved 1968, but it seems to have also come to the rescue of this lamentable year 2014.

The U.S. space agency—one of the few shining jewels in remaining in our national crown—demonstrated, with the amazing test flight of the new Orion spacecraft Dec. 5, that all our ugly tribal infighting can be overcome when we rise above this petty planet and look up to the stars. And NASA managed to work it magic even with one hand tied behind its budgetary back.

All those ethnically diverse and smiling faces at NASA had their eyes on a prize much bigger than the earthly politics of division.

NASA’s young faces—which showed black, white, brown and yellow on the space agency’s TV network’s coverage of the Orion test flight mission—give me hope and a reason to believe that this nation is still great, and possibly the greatest, in spite of its leaders.

In the case of NASA’s new Orion spacecraft—which will someday take Americans to asteroids, the Moon and Mars—technical skills and the spirit of exploration, applied to a national goal, have an amazing way of uniting people.

Back in December 1968, after a year of heartbreaking Vietnam War casualties, increasing antiwar violence in the streets at home, and the tragic assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy, it looked as though America’s best days were receding quickly in the rearview mirror.

The dark year of 1968 had reached its final month, when, along came NASA and the Apollo 8 mission.

Three astronauts not only orbited the Moon in December of that year, they also returned safely to Earth to cheers and parades. The feat of Apollo 8—the first piloted craft to orbit our cratered neighbor in space—galvanized the attention of the world.

When the Apollo astronauts returned home, they were greeted with cheers and tons of fan mail—all in the days before e-mail and social media.

Among the many fan messages was a congratulatory telegram sent to Apollo 8 astronaut Jim Lovell. The simple telegram was sent by a housewife named Valerie Pringle. ‘’You saved 1968,’’ she wrote.

Pringle’s famous telegram spoke volumes about how a single event can inspire pride and hope in a national landscape strewn with bad news.

Sure, we’ll admit that 2014 isn’t quite as bad as 1968. Sure, NASA’s Dec. 5, 2014 test flight of the unmanned Orion spacecraft wasn’t as dramatic as Apollo 8, but it came close, even without a crew.

If you consider the political nonsense thrown in NASA’s path since the 1990s—everything from navel-gazing Earth-focused eco missions (violations of NASA’s founding space-focused mission statement) and buying Russian rocket engines (at the expense of U.S. made components) to American astronauts hitching rides aboard Soyuz capsules and the White House’s slick “all talk-and-noaction” space legerdemain—last week’s mission should have been an utter failure. Instead, it was a brilliant success.

At the moment of the Orion Test Flight’s launch, at 7:05 a.m. Dec. 5, the entire NASA-TV website crashed.

NASA reported that millions of viewers tuned in to view real news in the making—not a mindless rehashing (with hand wringing) of the week’s civil unrest and celebrity fondlings.

Not surprisingly, not a single TV network bothered to broadcast the Orion test. No matter, the crash of the NASA-TV showed that—despite what politicians and social critics tell us—millions of Americans remain very interested—and engaged—in the exploration of space.

Bill of Rights response To the Times of Ti: Mr. Phillips, In regards to your recent letter to the Journal I feel obligated to defend the veteran’s organizations resident in this area.

First, Dec. 15, is not a “federal holiday”, it is President Franklin D. Roosevelt declaring Dec. 15, to be Bill of Rights Day, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the ratification of the Bill of Rights and is similar to numerous other days commemorating national events. Third, feel free to contact either me or the Commander of the local American Legion and we will educate you on what we do, have done, and intend to do, for both our veterans and the community. Last, as a local and concerned citizen, it would have been nice of you to have contacted North Warren School and inquired as to what they do to recognize this day. Anytime we have contacted them regarding “patriotic” activities, they have been more than responsive. Accordingly, on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 26, this small community of Crown Point came together to ensure that all who attended were filled in spirit and body by the time they left.

The meal, consisting of Turkey, stuffing, potatoes, peas, rolls and homemade apple, cream and pumpkin pies was served at the United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Crown Point from 4 to 7 p.m. There was no cost for this community meal!

The meal was a collaborative between the faith communities of Sacred Heart Church, Crown Point United Methodist, and the First Congregational Churches. We were grateful to both DeBro’s Café’, Crown Point Telephone, Crown Point Citgo, Hap’s Market, the Team at the Post Office, as well as the folks at Champlain National Bank, Ryan’s, Torri’s, Gunnison Orchards, the Hammond Library, Village Auto, A & S Customs, Knapp Senior Center Peelers, Cindy and Joe Bodette, and many individual contributions of both time and funding.

Where possible, the meal was served with locally grown and prepared items; Gunnison’s, for example, donated the apples for the pies. We are grateful to Cindy Bodette made Apple Pies, Carlene provided marvelous Cream Pies, made all the “Cream Pies,” DeBro’s made all the stuffing. First Congregational Church made rolls and pies and staffed the “take-out” meals. The United Methodist Church provided both food and facilities as well as additional support. CPTELCO made rolls and bought butter.

The Knapp Seniors pealed more than sixty pounds of locally grown potatoes donated by the Team of the Crown Point Post Office. The folks at both Crown Point Citgo and Hap’s Market supplied Juice and milk for the children. We welcomed the crew from Village Auto with peas and pies as well as pies from A & S Customs, Tori’s with pickles and olives, Hammond Library with Cranberry sauce. The seven turkeys were donated by Sacred Heart Church.

Volunteers from local churches and the community at large hosted this years event. No one was paid!! We were thrilled to receive substantial donations from both the Champlain National Bank, the Crown Point Chamber, and many kind spirited locals.

These funds helped us to purchase many of the incidentals. Our gratitude goes to many additional members of the Crown Point area who joined with us to make this a true community time of fellowship.

This was a “total” community effort that brought together people and resources to ensure true fellowship and a “Traditional” hot meal for those who might not have one, here in Crown Point. While the weather kept our numbers “lower” than previous years, We served approximately 125 meals both in-house

Response to letter To the Times of Ti: Concerning the letter presuming to bring “flawed assumptions of the facts” to light from a previous Op-Ed piece, I would simply point out that the author states only conclusions in opposition without pointing out any facts at all, much less flawed ones in the op-Ed piece. Well, he does point out the fact that the Democrats got thumped but that doesn’t clarify anything, does it? In these times of rubber stamp assertions rather than meaningful debate I guess it annoys me to have someone state HE is doing otherwise, and then not do it.

Art exhibit Continued from page 1 The gallery recently wrapped up its fall exhibit, which included artwork depicting Adirondack themes.

“There were different mediums with renderings of the mountains, ice fishing and other Adirondack scenes,” LaDeau said. “We had really good attendance over the span of the exhibit with about 26 people each day over the weekends.”

LaDeau said the gallery is already working with Crown Point Central School for a possible spring exhibit profiling the work of the students.

CROWN POINT — Local author Jean Arleen Breed is one of the featured authors that was interviewed for the ALVA Axiom Anthology of Author Interviews now available on amazon.com, and Kobo.com.

The series features interviews with a variety of noteworthy writers and editors discussing their creative roles in publishing and the media. It highlights the differences among the writers’ approaches and personalities.

For the writer, the variety in these authors’ approaches may serve to entertain as well as to inform. For the teacher, students will enjoy reading aloud the interviews as dialogues in which to explore not only contrasting ideas, but also writers’ unique characters in role-play. As such it provides a very personal look into the world of writing-for hard copy publication, the internet, and film. ALVA publication in eBook form on Barnesandnoble.com and alvapressinc.com will be completed next week while the ALVA Book form release is planned for January.

Church to hold ‘Blue Christmas service’ CROWN POINT — The United Methodist Church will offer a special “Longest Night” service (sometimes called a Blue Christmas service) Sunday, Dec. 21, at 4 p.m. Come out, and join in sharing and hearing prayers, scripture and music that acknowledge that God’s presence is for those who mourn, for those who struggle, and that God’s Word comes to shine light into our darkness. Christmas can be a painful time for some. It may be the first Christmas without a loved family member who has recently died; it may be a time that has always been difficult. The constant refrain on the radio and television, in shopping malls and churches, about the happiness of the season, about getting together with family and friends, reminds many people of what they have lost or have never had.

The anguish of broken relationships, the insecurity of unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the pain of isolation. All of these can make us feel very alone in the midst of the celebrating and spending. We need the space and time to acknowledge our sadness and concern; we need to know that we are not alone.

Our spirits sink, as the days grow shorter. We feel the darkness growing deeper around us. We need encouragement to live the days ahead of us.

Everyone, regardless of church background (or lack of it) is welcome. The short service will be followed by a brief time for light refreshments and fellowship.

•The Schroon Lake Community Church Bazaar will open festivities from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., with local crafts for sale along with a soup lunch.

•The Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce will be holding a Holiday Basket Raffle at the chamber offices with tickets being sold from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. The proceeds from the raffle will be donated to Schroon Lake programs to, “help make Christmas brighter for local residents.” Those participating in the basket raffle do not need to be present at the drawings in order to win.

•The Craft and Underground Food Bazaar will take place from 2 until 5 p.m. in the basement of the Community Church, with local crafters, exhibitors and displays.

•The lighting of the town Christmas Tree and caroling at Fountain Park starting at 5:30 p.m. There will also be a living Nativity walk procession to Our Lady of Lourdes Church, which will be followed by a Gospel reading.

The senior center will also host a memory tree lighting at their site.

•The Strand Theater will be the home base for the arrival of Santa Claus into town at 6 p.m., where he will meet with children, young and old, until 7:30 p.m.

•Musical performers throughout the town from 6 until 8 p.m. Performances will be taking place at the Community Church, Joannie’s Goodies and the Towne Store.

•Cocoa, cookies and coloring at the senior center from 6 until 8 p.m. and wagon rides starting in the town hall parking lot. Other events include children’s crafting at the Towne Store and cupcake decorating at Mr. P’s

Entertainment Moriah Center, NY - Natalie Sears Clark 73, died December 5, 2014 at home with her family at her side. She was born in Lake Placid, NY on August 18, 1941, the daughter of Frank and Betty (Alford) Sears. She graduated from Lake Placid High School in 1959. In 1963 she married Allan Clark from AuSable Forks and moved to Cayuga, NY where Allan began his teaching career in the Union Springs Central School District.

Natalie loved her flower gardens, from window boxes to large gardens like she had in Moriah Center. In addition to her interest in gardening she also joined the Order of the Eastern star in 1978 (Star of Cayuga Chapter #339 in Union Springs, NY) and has been an active member to the present time serving as Matron of Laeticia Chapter #263 in Mineville and various offices in Ft. Ticonderoga Chapter #263 in Ticonderoga. She has also served as Grand Esther and Associate Grand Marshall at the State level of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Natalie also had a dream of running a Bridal shop and in

1992 she fulfilled that dream when she purchased the Fashion Corner Bridal in Port Henry, NY which she ran until her death.

She thoroughly enjoyed serving the prom girls and especially enjoyed working with the Brides. Natalie was predeceased by her parents and her sister Nancy. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Allan, siblings, Frank, Donald and Betsy Richards, her two children, JoAnne Clark Caswell and her husband James, and Robert and 3 grandchildren, Adam, Heidi and Jesse.

PORT HENRY — The “ugly sweater party” craze has gained in popularity in the past few years, now becoming a fundraiser at Moriah Central School.

Middle/High School students and staff were encour-

aged to wear their most eyecatching, loud and creative sweaters Dec. 5, as part of a fundraiser for the district’s Christmas program.

“The kids have had a lot of fun with it, and the staff has, too,” Superintendent Bill Larrow said. “The funds will go to the school Christmas program, where we adopt families and students and help provide presents.”

To raise funds, the students and staff members brave enough to don their festive attire had to pay-to-put on, with the proceeds going to the program.

“During the school year, our staff pays to wear jeans on a payday Friday, which goes to the program,” Larrow said. “It kind of grew from there and the theme of ugly sweaters to give the students a chance to be involved.”

The students and staff were judged throughout the day Dec. 5, with the winners being announced at the end of the school day.

Zack Harter was crowned the king of the ugly sweater, followed by runner up Max Haran and third place finisher Kayla Joy. Shirley Kelly was named the staff winner.

Moriah Central changes holiday concert, senior dinner schedule

keith@denpubs.com PORT HENRY — Due to the threat of the first Nor ‘Easter of the 2014-15 winter season, Moriah Central School will be a hub of activity Monday, Dec. 15.

Events will start with the annual senior citizen dinner at the school, starting at 4 p.m. and running until 6:30 p.m. The event was moved from its originally scheduled day of Tuesday, Dec. 9.

The dinner is sponsored annually by the district and the Moriah Central Teacher’s Association.

“We served almost 300 seniors last year,” Superintendent Bill Larrow said. “The local Girl Scouts are here to help serve and the teachers help to serve, clean up and decorate for the dinner.”

Following the dinner, the annual elementary school concert will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the school auditorium. This concert is also a rescheduled event from Dec. 9.

The annual middle/high school winter concert, originally scheduled for Dec. 15, at 7 p.m., will take place one-half hour later at 7:30 p.m.

Historic bell restoration earns Moriah eighth grader Girl Scout honor

keith@denpubs.com PORT HENRY — Those entering the main office at Moriah Central School this year have noticed small bell towers on their right as they make their way into the school.

Those bells once announced the beginning and end of the school day at both the Mineville and Moriah schools, and now stand as part of the history and tradition of the district.

Getting those bells in a place of prominence was the mission of Moriah Central School eighth grader and Girl Scout Brooke Mildon, who worked on the project in order to earn her Silver Award, which was presented to her recently.

“I saw the bells in the storage room once and I was wondering what they were,” Mildon said.

“Later, I saw them again in the auditorium and really took an interest in them. I asked Mr. Larrow if I could create a place for them to be displayed and he told me I could.”

Larrow acted as project advisor for Mildon throughout.

“She did a phenomenal job and dedicated a tremendous amount of hours to the project,” Larrow said. “She did the research and the fundraising so we could have this beneficial piece of history at the school.”

In total, Mildon invested 312 hours (50 hours is required as the minimum) into the service

project, which included raising funds through spaghetti dinners, bake sales and bottle drives.

“She had to earn the money for this project herself,” mother and Girl Scout advisor Val Mildon said. “It has been great because my office at schools looks out at the bells and we always have people come in and ask about them.”

Brooke also accomplished another goal with the project.

“I wanted the fourth grade to include the bells as part of their town history curriculum, and they have” she said.

The Silver Award is the second highest achievement award given to scouts. Involving more than 50 hours of work per girl, the Take Action project for the Girl Scout Silver Award is aimed at making the local neighborhood or community better. The project allows girls to understand sustainability as they plan and implement their project. It also incorporates a global dimension, which encourages girls to connect with friends outside of their immediate community, learn how others have solved similar problems, and determine whether the ideas of others can help with their plan. Throughout the award process, girls put the Girl Scout Promise and Law into action.

Sentinel boy’s bowling team starts season with impressive wins Boys Bowling

TICONDEROGA — The Sentinels put their mark on the early season CVAC standing with a convincing win over the Eagles, giving them a 33.5-6.5 record through four matches.

William Gonyo had the hottest hand for the Sentinels with a 10-frame performance of 246 as part of a 550 series. The most consistent performance belonged to Cole Frasier, who combined games of 187, 189 and 200 for a three-game series of 590, tops among all bowlers. Connor Lauzon added a 551 series (204 game), with Anthony Paige rolling a 543 series that came with a 222 high game, Gavin Fleury hitting for a 213 game as part of a 535 series, and Duncan Bain earning a 10-frame high game of 163.

Peru 10, Moriah 0

MINEVILLE — The Vikings were unable to come away with a point against the Indians Dec. 8, moving their season record to 1-29.

Tanner Conley had the high game for the Vikings, rolling a 181 as part of a 418 series. Tyler Smith paced the team with a threegame total of 466 paced by a 174 game.

Ticonderoga 6, Peru 4

PLATTSBURGH — The Sentinels were able to edge the Indians with a 6-4 win Dec. 5 to up their season mark to 25-5.

Anthony Paige led the Sentinels with the high game (218) and high series (548), while Gavin Fleury had a high game of 183 as part of a 531 series and Connor Lauzon had a 497 series with a 178 high game. Cole Frasier contributed a 179 high game while Darby Guay was one pin behind at 178.

Ticonderoga 9, Plattsburgh High 1

PLATTSBURGH — The Sentinels scored all but one point against the Hornets in upping their record to 19-1 Dec. 3.

Gavin Fleury paced the Sentinels with a 534 series which included games of 190 and 192. Cole Frasier had the high game of the day for Ticonderoga, rolling a 213 as part of a 527 series. Connor Lauzon added games of 185 and 186 as part of a 525 series, while Anthony Paige rolled a 496 series (176) and Jonathan West added a 450 series (172).

AuSable Valley 9, Moriah 1

MINEVILLE — The Vikings picked up their first point of the year against the Patriots Dec. 3, putting their early season record at 1-19.

Tyler Smith had both the top game (169) and series (472) for Moriah, while Tanner Conley added a 162 high game to go with a 408 series and Zach Harter had a 161 high game.

Girls Bowling Beekmantown 4, Ticonderoga 0

TICONDEROGA — The Lady Sentinels were unable to score a point against a tough Lady Eagles squad Dec. 8, but were able to stay above .500 on the season with a 9-7 mark.

Cassidy McKee led the way on the lanes for the Sentinels with a high game of 230 as part of a 535 series. Cerise Bush had games of 160 and 167 as part of a 473 series, while Cheyanne Tuthill combined a pair of 159 games into a 472 series.

MINEVILLE — The Lady Vikings fell to 6-10 on the early season as the Lady Indians recorded a sweep Dec. 8.

Carly Newton provided the high game and series for the Vikings with a 10-frame performance of 156 and three game set of 427. Hailey Morgan added a 147 high game and 404 series.

PLATTSBURGH — The Lady Sentinels upped their record to 9-3 after the first week of the 2014-15 bowling season with a sweep of the Lady Indians Dec. 5.

The second straight set of games at the North Bowl Lanes in Plattsburgh showed higher scores, as Cheyanne Tuthill had an impressive series for the Sentinels, rolling games of 223 and 224 to record a 616 series in the win. Cassidy McKee rolled a pair of 215 games as part of a 597 series, while Cerise Bush had the highest game of the day, rolling a 233 as part of a 580 series. Samantha Gonyo added a 150 high game.

PLATTSBURGH — The Lady Sentinels were able to earn a point against the Lady Hornets, Dec. 3 to keep their record above .500 at 5-3.

Cassidy McKee rolled a 490 series with 168 high game, while Cheyanne Tuthill added a 432 series with the high game for the Lady Sentinels, scoring a 171.

MINEVILLE — The Lady Vikings racked up their first points of the season in a win over the Lady Patriots Dec. 3, putting their record at 3-5.

Carley Newton used a 163 high game to spark a team-high 443 series, while Hailey Morgan had the team high game of 178 as part of a 436 series.

Boys Basketball Schroon Lake 55, AuSable Valley 52

SCHROON — If the Schroon Lake boys varsity basketball team were playing in the Northern Basketball League’s Division I, they would now have to be considered a favorite.

The Wildcats scored their third straight win over a Class B/C opponent in as many games Dec. 5, outscoring AuSable Valley 27-15 in the final eight minutes of play to score the win.

Tanner Stone, who has made an early case for Division I MVP even though he and the Wildcats play in Division III, led the Wildcats with 22 points while Joe Maisonville scored 13, Alex Shaughnessy 12, Branden Hall 4 and Jordan DeZalia 4.

One week prior, the Wildcats scored wins over Class B schools Northeastern Clinton and Saranac.

went out to Western NY for my annual deer hunting trip this year, only to have the weather reduce the trip to hours of travel time. Opening day was snow and I mean the start of the storm in Buffalo. The deer were hunkered down and non-cooperative for the first two days into the season, and then the big snow came.

I made the decision to leave the camp early due to the forecast of five feet of snow or more.

I traveled up to my brother’s home and he said the forecast was for the wind pattern to slowly move south, blanketing his town with an expected three or four feet.

Hoping to see my family before I left was now out of the question. The snow was already too deep and the roads closed except for emergency traffic. So, the decision was made to beat feet out of there and try and get around the storm and get home. Heading back towards the Pennsylvania line and then traveling east in the Southern Tier of NY, I was skirting the storm.

After eleven and one half hours, I finally made it home to Moriah; a road burnout, goo goo eyes and all!

Checking in with everyone was now the goal.

The land line was now our form of communication. I would go back if they needed help like a generator, water pump or whatever, to help out.

I had to wait until the emergency was over and they allowed people back on the roads.

Thankfully, the snow melted slowly and did no damage. There was very little flooding, cellar pump outs or water damage. The family was trapped in their homes for four or five days, with shoveling 5 to 7 feet of snow out of the drive as the chore of the week.

The snow disappeared almost as fast as it came. I had to go back for a funeral this past week in Ontario, Canada and saw the green grass of Hamburg, NY. Seven feet of snow was reduced to a few piles along the roads or where they stockpiled the snow during the removal process.

Most of the snow was gone but what was left behind was a demonstration of the power and weight of snow. Over 20 commercial buildings crushed under the weight of the snow.

On my way through the area, I drove along route 62, in the Town of Eden, where I once lived. Eden is the center of agriculture in Erie County. Cabbages; broccoli, vegetables and sweet corn are all grown there by the ton.

Greenhouses and farmers markets line the town roads with fantastic deals for buying local foods. Sausages, meats, fruits and vegetables are all on sale, when in season to those who ap-

preciate quality foods.

For Eden’s agriculture it was a big hit.

By Rich Redman snow. Those green houses that were lined up next to each other to save space really took the hit. They were leveled. The weight of the snow on the top and pressure on the sides was too much. It brought them down.

Compacted greenhouses do not grow fruits and vegetables. Many had crops growing in them to supply markets with fresh spinach and other greens for winter use. They were also destroyed.

The Western New York farmers and their “Gardens of Eden” encountered natures wrath.

A Farmers livelihood depends on growing food for all of us, so the next time you drive by a farmers market, stop and buy some locally grown food. That spinach or other greens you are getting today may have been grown out in Western NY, or just down the road. It doesn’t matter. All of New York is local to me. I have lived, visited, hunted and fished all over the state and can call many places home.

From Tonawanda NY where the General Motors engine plant is, to Hamburg, with the Ford stamping plant, to Eden’s gardens all the way across the state to Washington County Dairy farms, to Clinton County’s Macintosh and Cortland Apple Orchards; they are all part of our lives, so buy local.

The farmers in Western NY will go on. Crops will be planted and harvested for you to enjoy. We all need to remember; we can buy local foods or get imported foods from foreign countries that don’t have the same regulations as we do. It’s a choice that affects lives.

Don’t ya love those stickers that say buy local when they are slapped on the bumper of a Subaru, Honda, VW or Toyota? Get real!

recently watched an episode of “Fat Guys in the Woods”, a new reality show which features a group of three or four amateur woodsman roughing it in the forested mountains of Tennessee.

The premise of the show is obviously entertainment, as it allows viewers to witness the hardships of four inexperienced outdoorsmen who endure a host of difficulties as they attempt to survive for three days in the woods without any food, water, shelter or fire.

Of course, the reality of the survival experience comes immediately into question when you realize they are wired for sound and filmed from every angle.

Despite alot of talk about hunting and trapping wild critters for food, the end result of most of these efforts is usually a quick snack of slugs, bugs, a frog or some berries.

Although the program does occasionally offer some solid information on the development of survival skills, the majority of their time is consumed with building shelters, attempting to start a fire or working on nonessential skills such as weaving cordage for unspecified use.

However, it is the development of primitive skills that should be a key element of every outdoor traveler’s bag of tricks.

Honing survival skills and a comprehensive knowledge of the outdoors has largely become a lost art, especially in this day and age of ‘instant everything’.

It’s been estimated that less than one in a hundred adults currently know how to kindle a fire, secure potable water or establish the direction of true north without a compass.

I guess it shouldn’t be much of a surprise, as we have come to a point in history where such knowledge no longer considered important. A cell phone is likely the only survival tool most travelers consider necessary today.

However, there was a time when such skills and knowledge was essential for an individual’s daily survival. It was a time before The Weather Channel provided instant weather updates, and the average traveler actually knew how to read the natural signs.

In the timeframe of 1880’s through the early 1900’s, there were over a hundred woodsman’s manuals penned by the likes of Bradford Angier, Horace Kephart, Elmer Kreps, George Washington Sears (Nessmunk), Ellsworth Jaeger, and Ernest Thompson Seton among others.

A majority of these publications were devoted to the skills necessary to get by in a northern woodland setting, although several of the authors also dealt with cold weather camping.

A list of the most popular titles would have to include “Camping and Woodcraft” by Horace Kephart, “Woodcraft and Camping” by George Washington Sears, “Camping Out” by Warren Miller, “The Forest” by Stewart Edward White, “Camp and Trail” by Stewart Edward White, “Trailcraft” by Claude Fordyce “Touring Afoot” by Claude Fordyce, “Woodcraft” by Elmer Kreps, and In Camp-Lore and Woodcraft by Umcle Dan Beard The origin of the term ‘primitive’ comes from prime – meaning first. The foundation of modern man’s ‘first skills’ were likely refining tools and techniques for cutting, trapping and eventually, for controlling fire.

Fire making remains among the most useful of all outdoor skills, and it is an essential tool to have in any one’s bag of tricks.

A simple fire will get a traveler through tougher times than any other single skill. Fires provide warmth, light, visibility, heat, protection, and comfort. Fire keeps the mind from wandering, and focused on the present. It keeps a person busy.

Despite a constant need for improvements, and the advent of new technologies and materials, there will always be a need for mankind to look back. Maybe it is just simple nostalgia, or a yearning for days long since past.

But, whatever the case, there is no doubt that mankind retains a deep seated need for rough settings in natural surrounding.

I suppose it was the great naturalist, John Muir who explained it best, when he claimed, “Going to the woods is going home, for I suppose we all came from the woods originally.”

It’s interesting to note the wide variety of topics and skills offered in these early publications which ranged from camp construction, to fire building, cooking, hunting, fishing and trapping.

The necessities of food, water and shelter were given heavy play, while there was little mention of the necessity of simple play.

By and large, the manuals were penned in a very serious matter, as survival was not to be taken lightly.

As part of my ongoing effort to introduce the next generation of outdoor travelers to the ways of the woods, I often provide them with a full day of skills development which includes shelter building, fire starting, and the essential elements of land navigation. We also work on track identification, fishing techniques and collecting wild edibles.

There is a particular satisfaction that comes with knowing you possess the skills and knowledge necessary to get by in the woods. And with this knowledge, comes confidence and comfort.

Having the skills necessary to start a fire can be the difference between a simple adventure and a tragic incident.

Fish trap expected to pay dividends for salmon fishery A significant upgrade at the Ed Weed Fish Culture Station in Grand Isle is expected to pay dividends for the health of the salmon population in Lake Champlain.

Recently, hatchery staff, fisheries biologists and other officials from the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department teamed up to construct a fish trap on Hatchery Brook, the station’s discharge stream. The trap will improve the collection process for adult salmon during their spawning run into the brook.

After being collected, the adult salmon are used to reproduce and provide fertilized eggs for the state’s Ed Weed Fish Culture Station, where the eggs are hatched and young salmon are reared before being returned to Lake Champlain.

“Being able to collect fish in a safe, efficient and effective way for both staff and salmon is key to our overall fisheries management plan,” said Adam Miller, fish culture operations chief with Vermont Fish & Wildlife.

Former methods used to collect salmon involved more handling and stress on fish, and were less efficient for hatchery staff and biologists.

Lighting a fire with a spark from flint and steel is a very satisfying experience. Cooking healthy sized trout fillets over the coals of the same fire is even more rewarding.

TFCU to offer scholarships

TICONDEROGA — The Ticonderoga Federal Credit Union (TFCU) is again offering local high school seniors the opportunity to win several scholarships toward tuition at a two or fouryear accredited college.

TFCU student members will be competing with high school students from credit unions statewide for $1,000 Credit Union Association of New York awards. In addition, they will be competing regionally within the Adirondack District for a $500 scholarship, and locally among TFCU members for $500 scholarships. Five $500 TFCU scholarships were awarded in 2014.

To be eligible, students must be college-bound high school seniors at the time of application, attending college for the first time in the fall of 2015, and members of the Ticonderoga Federal Credit Union.

Applicants will be judged based upon their academic achievements, extracurricular and community activities and the quality of a written essay. Applications will be judged by representatives of the Credit Union Association of New York (CUANY) located in Albany, and winners will be announced in the second quarter of 2015.

In brief Fort Ti presents ‘Clothing Rogers’ Rangers’

TICONDEROGA — Fort Ticonderoga’s “Fort Fever Series” returns “Clothing Rogers’ Rangers” Sunday, Jan. 11, at 2 p.m. in the Mars Education Center, Fort Ticonderoga. The cost for each program is $10 per person and will be collected at the door and free for members of Fort Ticonderoga.

The infamous Rogers’ Rangers played an important role in the French and Indian War history of Fort Ticonderoga. Despite the numerous accounts of them spying on the French encampments and their attacks on wood-cutting parties, their clothing and appearance is something of a mystery. Artificer Tailor Gibb Zea will discuss and translate the documentation known about the rangers to give a better idea of what they wore, how they wore it, and what textiles one might expect to find on a ranger in the 1750s.

A focus on the clothing will revolve around the appearance of Rogers and his men as they would have appeared to the large French scouting party that they met March 13, 1758, the day of the Battle on Snowshoes.

Common Ground Alliance issues updated Blueprint for the Blue Line The Adirondack Common Ground Alliance (CGA) has released the updated Blueprint for the Blue Line, a set of legislative priorities for the Adirondack Park for 2015 and beyond. The Blueprint is meant to help inform our state elected officials about what is important to the people of the Adirondacks.

For the last seven years, CGA has brought together a diverse collection of stakeholders to foster an open dialogue and seek collaborative solutions for the complex problems Adirondack communities face. The updated Blueprint, crafted using feedback from a legislative poll of CGA participants, calls for increased infrastructure funding and restoration of operational budgets for state agencies that serve the Adirondacks, as well as policy innovations that support renewable energy, smart growth, and more.

“The good news is: We are making progress. Among the CGA participants, we have evolved from agreeing in simple areas, to developing a shared vision, and we have now moved on to prioritizing action items,” said William G. Farber, chairman of the Hamilton County Board of Supervisors. “From my perspective, this couldn’t come at a better time for the Adirondacks, as we have communities which are facing real challenges, while we are fortunate enough to have a governor who is committed to making a difference. For the Adirondacks, Governor Cuomo’s balanced leadership, and commitment to the Park, is the perfect complement to our CGA effort.”

“Since its inception, the Common Ground Alliance has strived to bring together government, nonprofits, and businesses to make a collective impact on the Adirondacks,” said Cali Brooks, executive director of Adirondack Foundation. “This updated Blueprint calls for legislative action that impacts all of our communities.”

“Some have said those in the Adirondacks would rather fight than win. We say the Common Ground agenda gives us something to fight for together so that the Adirondack Park’s wilder-

ness, clean water, wildlife, visitors, communities, and economy all win,” said William C. Janeway, executive director of the Adirondack Council. “The Adirondack Park draws 10 million annual visitors and hundreds of thousands of seasonal residents, all of whom require clean water and effective wastewater treatment facilities. Most Adirondack communities have only a few hundred households to pay back the multi-million-dollar costs of building and rebuilding modern water and sewer systems. Low-interest loans aren’t good enough. Grants are needed to protect the Park’s environment and economy.”

The Blueprint notes that infrastructure for clean water, tourism, roads, and bridges is either in disrepair or severely lacking, with small, rural communities in the Adirondacks in need of assistance from the state to address the problem. CGA’s Blueprint proposes capital fund grants for preventing and combating invasive species; buried broadband communications lines and well-screened functioning cell service; state-land infrastructure, trails, bridges, signage, and ecological restoration; and farmland protection funding distribution.

CGA believes Adirondack communities would benefit from an increase in operational funding for state agencies, including the Department of Environmental Conservation and Adirondack Park Agency for outreach, stewardship, and community support. The Blueprint also recommends continued and expanded I Love NY funding; increased resources for Forest Preserve stewardship; and greater emphasis on promoting local farm products and increased support for local food production and young farmers.

Finally, the Blueprint proposes a series of policy updates, such as passage of community net metering legislation; a closer look at APA policies that promote smart growth; and a closer look at the State Land Master Plan.

Police Blotter TICONDEROGA — On Nov. 26 at approximately 9:35 p.m., 49 year old Waldrow Maher of Ticonderoga was arrested on Old Chilson Road and charged with a DWI. Maher was driving an ATV with no helmet and had a BAC of .18, adding an equipment violation and Affravated DWI to the list of charges. Maher had previous DWI and Aggravated DWI convictions within the past 10 years.

The incident, handled by Sergeant Hulbert, Patrolman Kilcullen, and Patrolman Genier, resulted in Maher being processed, released, and received an appearance ticket.

Smith of Canatota, NY and charged him with a DWI, Refusal to take a Breath Test, Aggravated Unlicensed Operator in the first degree, and Obstruction of Governmental Administration in the second degree.

Smith, who has a previous DWI conviction within the past 10 years, was taken into custody from the scene of the accident.

Smith appeared in front of Judge O’Bryan at the Town of Ticonderoga Court and was remanded to Essex County Jail until he was sober enough to be arraigned.

Smith, arraigned on Dec. 4, returned to Essex County Jail for lack of $1000 bail or $2000 bond.
