‘Bridge turn’ options explored By Christina Scanlon

CROWN POINT — The results are back from a state Department of Transportation study prompted by a petition from the public for changes to what, they say, is a dangerous intersection connecting Vermont and New York. While the study calls for some changes, it’s likely not the slam-dunk they’d hoped for. “They have not recommended lights,” said Crown Point Supervisor Charles Harrington about the findings. Instead the study recommended removing pavement marking for the right turn onto Route 9N/22 in the northbound direction, create a single lane and shoulder to both the north and south sides and move the stop bar at Bridge Road closer to Route 9N/22. A reworking of signage was also recommended to provide more warning of the upcoming intersection. A combining of
signs was also noted. A reduced speed zone was not recommended. The study concluded 13 accidents occurred in a six year, four month period from Jan. 1. 2009 through April 30, 2015. Of those, five were rear-end collisions involved Route 185 westbound motorists, two were from vehicles leaving the roadway, three involved deer, three involved drivers turning left on Route 185 and one year-end collision took place when a southbound vehicle was turning onto Route 9N/22. “We won’t know if this will give us the positive result until we see the results,” said Harrington. The improvements will not be implemented until spring 2016. Harrington said he was certain some will not be satisfied with the results of the findings, though he didn’t garner an opinion either way. “It’s a step in the right direction,” he said.
