Port Henry updated on Stewart’s, waterfront

Demolition of old supermarket scheduled to begin this week By Tim Rowland STAFF WRITER

PORT HENRY | Demolition was expected to begin this week on the former Mac’s Village Supermarket, which will be razed to make way for a new Stewart’s Shop, Moriah Supervisor Tom Scozzafava told a town board meeting Thursday. See STEWART’S » pg. 9

Artifacts were unearthed when the Ticonderoga hospital graded a new entryway.

TICONDEROGA | When construction crews were scraping the ground for a new entrance to the Ticonderoga hospital they began unearthing things: A beer bottle from long ago, what appeared to be a girl’s change purse and most interesting, the stacked stones of a dry well. Workers for UVM Elizabethtown Hospital’s Ticonderoga campus thought it might have been part of an old irrigation system, and went to the Historical Society to see if there were any clues in faded photographs, but none were forthcoming. So it will just go down as one more mystery in a town where you can scarcely sink a shovel without hitting something interesting. “At one time or another, the whole town was a battlefield,” said historian Diane O’Connor. For many years, sinking a shovel at Fort Ticonderoga

was liable to turn up — a shovel. There are scores of them in the fort’s collection, which makes sense in that 18th century earth moving consisted of thousands of men foisting thousands of shovels. According to the fort’s website, “We have cataloged over 1,300 tools through this project so far. Tool examples include shovels, axes, mattocks, picks, augers, fascine knives, Irish spades or loys, as well as masonry, wood working, and agricultural tools. We have found maker’s marks and even remnant pieces of wooden handles.” Ticonderoga was strategic not just to Europeans, but to Native Americans as well, and struggles for control of the area extended far and wide. “It’s not just at the fort,” said Bill Dolback, president of the Ticonderoga Historical Society. “The whole town was the site of so many scouting trails and battlefields from different wars.” See UNDERGROUND » pg. 2

4-H teen from Essex County takes third place in Horse Bowl Lydia Visser is a member of Coyote Ridge Riders 4-H Club By Kim Dedam STAFF WRITER

LEWIS/PORT HENRY | A local 4-Her has won national acclaim, taking third place in Horse Bowl Competition in Louisville, Kentucky. Lydia Visser, 14, is a member of the Coyote Ridge Riders 4-H Club that meets in Port Henry. According to Essex County 4-H Educator

at Cornell Cooperative Extension Jessica Tyson, Lydia earned her trip to nationals by taking second place in state competition out of 38 competitors. “This allowed her to qualify to compete at the Eastern National 4-H Horse Round-Up Competition held in Kentucky on Nov. 9,” Tyson said. “Horse Bowl contests provide an opportunity for youth enrolled in 4-H horse projects to demonstrate their knowledge of equine related subject matter in a competitive setting, where attitudes of friendliness and fairness prevail.” In Louisville, Lydia was one of 300 youth participants from over 20 states. TICONDEROGA | Every mother’s child knows that Christmas is too big to be celebrated in a single day, so Ticonderoga made it a week and a half. “It’s my favorite event of the year, because everyone is so happy-go-lucky,” said Matt Courtright, of the 10thAnnual Ticonderoga Area North Country Christmas Celebration that will kick off on Saturday, Nov. 30. Courtright, the Chamber’s president and

CEO, said the celebration evolved out of a long ago tree-lighting ceremony that lost its luster. Instead of canceling it though, “we transferred it into a 10-day celebration and it’s grown ever since,” he said. The celebration kicks off with Small Business Saturday t wo days af ter Thanksgiving, and features plenty of other attractions, including the tree lighting, wagon rides, special events, Holiday Shopping & Dining Night, Holiday Farmers Market, Parade of Lights, and such. Two of the more popular events are the revamped tree lighting and the parade of lights, said chamber Events Coordinator Erin Mullen.

MORIAH | The Moriah Chamber of Commerce has been hard at work creating a weekend filled with bargains, lights and “something for everyone” activities. On Saturday, Nov. 30, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. the chamber will offer 10 percent off all merchandise. Participants in Small Business Saturday include The Wedding Barn at Edgemont Inn, Decker Flats Greenhouse, Bert’s Jams and Jellies, A Gift to Remember, Home of Champ, Meadow and Mountain Farm and the Glens Falls National Bank. There will

be free basket raffles and refreshments. Drawings take place at 3 p.m. Helping to brighten the darker days of winter are the Memory Tree and tree lighting ceremonies. At approximately 6 p.m., several local churches will participate in reading the names of loved ones being remembered this holiday season. Taking turns will be Father Al from St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Rev. Ken Parker from Mt. Moriah Presbyterian Church and the Moriah Methodist Church, and Pastor Alric

When the former Lowe’s home center was built, archeological samplings turned up boxes of relics — shards of glass, ceramics, nails and tools of woodland Indians. When Rt. 8 was improved west of Hague, construction ripped up a number of benchmark medallions hammered into the stone by legendary Adirondack surveyor Verplanck Colvin. Some finds are more startling than others. A century ago, when a rail spur was being built to a sawmill, in the neighborhood of where the community college is today, workers discovered 24 sets of bones. Dolback said the bones were assumed to by of Revolutionary War-era soldiers who perhaps died of disease. Although this was speculation at the time, the bones were moved closer to the fort. Of course today the sawmill is long gone, and anything that happened to turn up from its time on earth would be considered a historic find. In Ticonderoga, historic sites are buried atop of historic sites. Mossy Point had its charcoal ovens and forges, worn out steamboats were dumped at the north end of

“Ric” Lewis from the Lake Champlain Bible Fellowship. Following the reading, the Memory Tree will be lit. At 6:30 p.m. the Parade of Lights will begin at the Port Henry Firehouse on Church Street. Line-up starts at 6 p.m. The parade will wind its way through town, and end up at the bandstand on Park Place. Santa will be there waiting for the children, with the Pt. Henry Fireman’s Auxiliary helping Santa out with gifts for all of them. Free refreshments and wagon rides round out the day’s festivities. ■

Lake George and even paper mills along the La Chute River that were functioning half a century ago, are now archeological grist. “A lot of industrial debris just got buried underground,” Dolback said. So rich was Ticonderoga in buried history that relic hunting became a significant problem. “People were coming over to look at old maps to find out where the old settlements were,” Dolback said. “Some were very successful, and there was controversy back in the ’90s involving some high-profile people.” Historians frown on relic hunting because it can interfere with the quest to learn about the past. “It’s like ripping a page out of a book,” said Margaret Staudter, registrar and site archaeologist at Fort Ticonderoga. “The ground is the safest spot for artifacts until they’re ready to be processed.” The fort has processed thousands of artifacts, going through the time-consuming and tedious exercise of inspecting, researching and cataloging even the tiniest button. “There is so much that comes out of the ground,” Staudter said, “And there are many more stories for us to explore.” ■

TICONDEROGA | The University of Vermont Health Network-Elizabethtown Community Hospital has reopened the Wicker Street entrance to its Ticonderoga Campus. The next phase of the campus renovations is scheduled to take place in the spring of 2020, with the installation of new sidewalks, increased lighting, landscaping, and resurfacing of parking lots. ■

Chilson Volunteer Fire Department Chief Paul LaRock (left) accepts a check for $500 from Eagle Lake Property Owners’ Association President Jack Mulcahy (right). The donation was made to help allay the cost of the fire department’s new tanker truck. “Our members really appreciate everything that the Chilson firefighters do,” said Mulcahy (recently retired assistant chief of the Glens Falls Fire Department). “I know better than most people what it takes to be a firefighter, and these folks do it all as volunteers — the training, the calls at all hours of the day and night in all kinds of weather — from a sense of civic duty. This donation is a token of how thankful we are for their service.” Photo provided

NY-21st race on the radar TWITTER BATTLE

Stefanik, Cobb in national spotlight following first days of impeachment hearings By Nathan Ovalle EDITOR

NORTH COUNTRY | The race for the 21st Congressional District seat gained national attention over the weekend. U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik was front and center in the opening days of the impeachment hearings that began last week. Stefanik’s prominent role earned praise from President Donald Trump, support from the party’s highest-ranking members and donations for her re-election effort. It also brought the attention of the country to the NY-21 election less than a year away. Stefanik is being challenged by Tedra Cobb, whose name (518) 585-9058 was. signs.com also thrust into the spotlight in the process. Stefanik defeated Cobb in 2018 with 56 percent of the vote. Over a span of just a few days, Cobb’s campaign says they received more than $1 million in donations from supporters.

ATTENTION

“I am overwhelmed by the support we have received,” Cobb said in press release. “Stefanik’s partisan political theater is beneath the dignity of her office. She skipped several important private hearings— but with the cameras on, she repeatedly attempted to derail yesterday’s public hearings. Stefanik should take her oath to the constitution seriously and find all the facts in this grave matter of national security. The people of this district deserve better.” “Much of the new attention to NY-21 came Saturday after George Conway ... tweeted a screenshot of his $2,800 donation to Cobb,” a press release from Stefanik’s campaign said. “He also circulated and later deleted a fake photo of Stefanik at the hearing, which had been Photoshopped to feature a

Much of the attention to the race has come through Twitter. One of the donors to Cobb’s campaign was George Conway, husband of Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway. He tweeted the following message Saturday: “.@EliseStefanik is lying trash. Please give to her opponent, @TedraCobb.” Stefanik responded with: “The one thing I’ve NEVER been called in my life is TRASH. You need serious help.” The president offered this take on Sunday: “A new Republican Star is born. Great going @EliseStefanik!”

“So much studying has been done that even her younger siblings have remembered Horse Bowl questions and can recite them off the tops of their head.” The 14-year-old also worked hard to raise funds needed for the trip. “Lydia’s dedication to this Horse Bowl competition has not gone unnoticed,” Tyson said. “The whole county has been rooting for her and wishing her nothing but the best.

hand sticking up the middle finger. “So far this cycle, Stefanik has easily out-f undraised Cobb, though Cobb has claimed more in-district donors,” Stefanik’s campaign relayed. “Stefanik ended the third quarter in September with almost $1.3 million in her campaign fund, compared to $500,000 for her Democratic opponent.” Dave Wasserman, U.S. House editor of the nonpartisan Cook Report, doesn’t think the new attention will be a problem for Stefanik’s re-election efforts. “The political reality - as much as Dems wish this weren’t the case - is that #NY21 Rep. Elise Stefanik (R) is wellaligned with her North Country district, which twice voted for Obama before voting for Trump by *14%* in 2016. She’s not vulnerable in 2020.” ■

“Out of all the youth competing, Lydia came in third overall, and the New York State Horse Bowl Team came in third as well. “This is amazing, as this is Lydia’s first year in the senior division for 4-H, youth ages 14 to 19. And in her first year she qualified to attend nationals and placed in the top five! That is amazing and goes to show how hard she has worked to earn that.” Lydia Visser is the first youth from the Essex County to compete at the national level

for horse events in more than 10 years. “We are so extremely proud of Lydia and the amount of time and dedication she has put into preparing for this,” Tyson said. Youth participating in local 4-H horse programs only need to have a love for horses, Tyson said. “That is what is so wonderful about 4-H horse clubs here, you don’t have to own an equine friend in order to be a part of the horse program.” ■

First United Methodist Church welcomes new music director, organist Romano has impressive background By Laurel Carroll STAFF WRITER

TICONDEROGA | The Ticonderoga First United Methodist Church has announced the appointment of Ronnie Romano as their new music director and organist. Romano is in his final year at Middlebury College, majoring in music with a minor in Chinese. Originally from Bayonne, N.J., he grew up playing the piano. At Middlebury, Romano sings with the college choir, plays the piano for the Winter Term Musicals, and directs the music for the Middlebury College Musical Players. During 2018 he served as music director for the Potomac Theatre Project’s Off-Broadway production of “Brecht

on Brecht.” This past summer he participated in a one-month intensive music program in Paris (the European American Musical Alliance), focusing on composition, counterpoint, analysis and score reading. This year, Romano’s involvement goes beyond the college as he becomes music director of Wellspring, a Vermont choir that sings for hospice patients and their families. Wedding barn opens

Barns at Edgemont Inn will cater to weddings, special events By Tim Rowland STAFF WRITER

PORT HENRY | This barn was built for brides and grooms, not horses and cows. But the new Barns at Edgewood, Inn now open for the booking of weddings and other memorable events, still holds true to the genre, with its utilitarian lumber and mighty post and beam construction. At its first official ceremony in October, Edgemont manager Karen Mitchell said the barn drew rave reviews. “People want to get married in barns,” she said. The barn expands on the hospitality offerings of the Edgemont B&B, a highly rated inn in the hills above Lake Champlain. The mansion and accompanying horse farm was built by iron-mining mogul George Sherman in 1900, a man who left his architectural fingerprints on a number of historically significant Port Henry structures, including its library and train depot. The home was purchased by Vincent DuPont and meticulously renovated into ••'-"•I a bed and breakfast that opened in 2015. wv1w wn"""r'"'• The new, bigger barn complements a smaller venue, and can comfortably accommodate parties in excess of 230 people, DURABLE with a grand hall, stage, big modern mens and womens bathrooms and a bar that opens to the...... grounds outside, where there are fire rings and a barbecue-pit. pavilion The smaller barn is for rehearsal dinners and more intimate parties. •1wv-■ v1i11 ■ 1

I plans to keep Edgemont as more Mitchell said Dupont of an event-supporting inn, and will open a new bed and breakfast at the 10-room Maple Knoll, an historic inn overlooking Lake Champlain located on the north end of Port Henry. Once it’s renovated, the property may also include a restaurant at some point, she said. The Edgemont B&B will transition into the Barns at Edgemont Inn, which has the advantage of allowing the wedding party to stay on site, which is a bonus for planning and set-up. At the October wedding, the party came for a week. “The

lodging and the barn all worked together,” she said. “It was perfect, and the bride wasn’t stressed at all. If they can rent it for the whole week it’s awesome — everyone is more relaxed.” The Barns at Edgemont takes advantage of local farms for catering, and works with regional bridal shops, which Mitchell hopes will also help publicize the new venue. “We need to get the word out and let people know that we’re here,” she said. The property website is edgemontbarns.com and Mitchell can reached at 518-524-5175. ■

The tree lighting was freshened with a dejay and rebranded the Rockin’ Tree Lighting. “Music helps everything,” Mullen said. The Parade of Lights features a precession of decorated fire trucks and vehicles that wind through the town. “You don’t have to go to the parade, the parade comes to you,” she said. “We cannot thank all of the businesses, organizations, and volunteers, who make this celebration such a success,” Courtright said. “We work hard to grow the event each and every year for the community, visitors and area businesses.” Small Business Saturday is a national effort encouraging people to patronize merchants in their communities. Participating businesses promotions, specials and events will be available as well as additional information on other ways the community can get involved. In addition, the Chamber will be coordinating a Holiday Shopping and Dining Night, encouraging people to shop and dine locally within the area on Friday, Dec. 6, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Offering specials and promotions, participating businesses will have a Shopping & Dining Night snowflake emblem displayed, and will be listed in the Holiday Shopping & Dining Guide. On the Salmon River near Pulaski, New York, the Pacific’s have spawned, and their eggs can either develop into young fish, or they become fish food by other fish. Big browns or the steelhead come into feed on those fresh eggs. Once the Pacific’s spawn, they return to nature. Pacific’s die after spawning, its nature’s way. Zombie fish or dead corpse’s float downstream to feed the rivers waters. In our part of the country, the Saranac has Atlantics spawning. They return to the lake after spawning to live another day and to spawn another year. Big browns and an occasional rainbow come into feed on Atlantics eggs also. Nature provides a future for the fish. Reeds are the fish’s nests where the eggs develop. As anglers we need to be respectful and careful, we don’t fish over spawning fish, or step on the reeds and crush the eggs or loosen them up so they float downstream to a feeding fish. Eggs are the future we need to protect. Respect for the fish is something that needs to be encouraged. For the most part, the fly rods are put to bed for the winter. Steel headers though are a different breed. Those large lake run rainbow trout spawn in the rivers in spring. When food like salmon eggs are available, they come into the rivers early and hang out, feeding on eggs. If you fish for steelhead, you can use an egg fly to imitate salmon eggs and try for a bite, or you can swing flies. Salmon and steelhead flies are colorful and deadly when presented in the proper way. Using a single hand flyrod or a double handed switch or spey rod is a unique experience. I made a spey rod a year ago and took it out for the first

time this year. Believe me there is a learning curve to casting a spey rod. The first challenge is getting to the river. Threading a 13-foot rod through a narrow woods and brush river trail is an adventure. Every wild grape vine, and snarly bush just reaches out to grab hold of the rod or line. You learn to weave the rod through the brush quickly. OK, so now you are on the river, you wade out a few feet and want to back cast. WRONG, no back casts! Spey rods require a new set of rules. Pull, don’t push is the first rule, single handed rods are pushers, speys are pullers. Don’t grip it tight, loose is the term you need to remember. Let the rod do the work. Yea right. After thrashing the water for a while, things seem to flow. You turn to your buddy and say “Hey, that was a good cast you missed seeing it”, as you blow the next one they are watching. As soon as you think you have it down, it crumbles. Casts pile up in front of you, you push, not pull, the trees reach out and grab your rod tip or fly line, and they of course, you snag a rock, branch, limb, bush, tree, or yourself. By Dan Alexander As much as we all complain about them, I have to wonder why in the world anyone will want a high profile government job in the future Oh sure, there are a lot of perks, pay’s not bad, bennies are great but so are the headaches, especially when things go bad. Given the antics that are taking place in the halls of state and federal government these days, getting things back on a bipartisan keel, would seem next to hopeless. At times you just have to wonder what their definition of T-R-A-N-S-P-A-R-E-NC-Y really is. To us it means things like “in clear view” and “easily understood”. To our government elected officials and political operatives I fear it means “whatever sounds believable” and “if they can’t see it, it’s because it is too transparent”. In other words, they have become so good at stealth, transparency, and believing every word they say the American public has been left to just pick a side and hope for the best. What we can’t see, know or understand we can’t address, and if it can’t be seen or addressed then everyone in government gets to be left to pursue whatever actions their party demands. It remains difficult for private citizens to question anything undertaken by the government these days? The national media has clearly chosen to take sides and the public is no longer swayed by much of anything they report, leaving those undecided truly in the dark about what is taking place. Last week we had another school shooting at Saugus High School in California resulting in three deaths, one of which was the shooter and another three seriously wounded. In the past, this story would have dominated the news for days with politicians taking sides over the gun rights and mourning community members. Instead, political activity in Washington dominated the news cycle, once the shooting was over. It’s really sad to be so cynical in this era of information and supposed enlightenment. The process of governance and legal interpretation has created an environment of mistrust and misuse of power and authority to the point that we just don’t know who we can trust or whom to believe. Our government shouldn’t function this way, but power and money can change even the best of us, which is why they shouldn’t be given so much money or power. Citizen legislators and even civil servants should have roots in the private sector. Government services should be regulated with limits – the same types of limits government places on private enterprise when they fear it’s getting too big and monopolistic. The government understands regulatory controls. I wonder how they would feel if they were more closely regulated? ■

Seeking advice State appoints advisory group to plan Adirondack future By Tim Rowland STAFF WRITER

RAY BROOK | Almost like flood waters, surges in hikers on certain days in the High Peaks overwhelm highways and trails, then recede to leave the towns and state with lots of cleaning up to do. Piecemeal efforts to discourage overuse have had marginal success and on occasion have made things worse, officials say, largely because there is no overall park strategy to address the problem. Towns and conservation groups have called for such a plan, and earlier this month, the state Department of Environmental Conservation bought into the idea, with the creation of a High Peaks Strategic Planning Advisory Group. The group consists of more than a dozen individuals with strong connections to the park, representing a variety of interests. “DEC has assembled a team of talented and committed people to work together to provide advice on a strategic approach that will support the Adirondacks’ local economies, protect the environment, and provide safe, quality recreational experiences for visitors,” DEC commissioner Basil Seggos said in a prepared statement. The group will advise a formal strategic planning process, guided by Acting Executive Deputy Commissioner Judy Drabicki and led by Division of Lands and Forests Director Rob Davies and DEC Region 5 Director Bob Stegemann. With 6 million acres, nearly half of which is in the Forest Preserve, there is plenty of room inside the park to spread out. But crowds tend to flock to the High Peaks in Essex County and Keene Valley in particular. Keene Supervisor Joe Pete Wilson, a member of the advisory panel, said he’s optimistic about the panel’s chances for success, particularly because it indicates the state has recognized the problem, and an associated need to act. “There are no easy answers,” Wilson said. “But the governor got it right (in his call for better planning) and the fact that they’re carving out space on the panel for stakeholders is very positive.”

Hikers are enjoying the mountains, but without a parkwide plan some believe that use will be too concentrated in the High Peaks. Photo by Tim Rowland

Keene appreciates the hikers, but recognizes the need to conserve the mountains that being them to the town in the first place. “We’re hoping this is the beginning of a comprehensive plan for all stakeholders to help protect the park,” said advisory group member Teresa Cheetham-Palen, owner of Rock and River Guide Co., and a member of the Keene Town Board. Cheetham-Palen said the advisory group will also allow diverse representatives to compare notes. For example, the Olympic Regional Development Authority may have some thoughts on crowd management. “They have to handle crowds that come to big sporting events, and they have it figured out,” she said. The DEC’s goals for the plan, which is expected to be finalized in 2020, include the protection of the forest, maintaining safety along state highways, promoting high-quality recreational experiences and bolstering local economies. The first meeting of the group will be held in early December.

From STEWART’S » pg. 1

Snagging yourself is not something I recommend. I haven’t done it yet with the spey rod, but I have heard the fly go whizzing by my head at Mach speed. Driving a salmon hook into your ear or neck would hurt, probably leave both a mark and a lifelong mental impression. My casting is questionable to say the least, but hey, I’m out there doing it, and that is worth something. Anyway, it was my first year with a spey rod, and yes, I did catch two Atlantic Landlocked Salmon on our beautiful Saranac River. The river’s beauty ends however when you go upstream. You then realize that those historic salmon that once were so prolific that they were harvested with pitchforks, can no longer spawn in their historic waters due to dams. The Imperial Dam has not been used in years and is classified as Class C high hazard dam by New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. So why keep it? There is no reasonable answer I have heard so far. The Lake Champlain Chapter of Trout Unlimited unanimously voted to remove the dam, we do not support a fish ladder. We want the dam removed and the Saranac River restored to geo-morphic conditions that support aquatic communities, reduce ice buildup and allow the salmon to migrate to additional spawning waters. What has been done on the Boquet River by removing the old wooden dam is proof. Atlantic Landlocked salmon now spawn in waters for the first time in over 100 years. That is Environmental Conservation at its best, and we want the same for the Saranac River. Remove the Dam and Restore the River! ■ — Rich Redman is a Moriah-based outdoors writer. His column runs monthly. He can be reached at rangeric@nycap.rr.com.

The property has been fenced for safety, and shelving and whatever else has been left inside will come out. Then the company will begin removal of asbestos, a process that requires a generator to pipe in air, and will take about two weeks, Scozzafava said. After that, the building will come down over the course of four to five weeks. “They know what they’re doing,” Scozzafava said. “They do this like we brush our teeth.” Construction on the new building will commence with the 2020 building season. Overall, the site will become more aesthetic, the supervisor said, with the drab, quasi-modern supermarket building gone to open up views of historical, mining-era architecture in back. Further, Stewart’s plans to match elements of the old buildings in its new store. “It will match our brick buildings; they’re very excited about this,” Scozzafava said. In other town business, the board discussed the future of its waterfront, with Waterfront Committee members present to propose a five-year plan that they hope will draw more traffic and commerce to the town’s two campgrounds. Committee member Mark Davenport said that the campsites — and the town

Intensive use of High Peaks trails has been growing, with no signs of leveling off, Wilson said. The state tried to limit parking on Rt. 73 through Keene Valley this summer, with limited success. Hikers parked further away and walked along the highway to the trailheads, parked in private neighborhoods or just ignored the no-parking signs altogether. Compounding problems this summer, a bridge leading to a popular trail head into the High Peaks interior was closed due to bridge work, and hikers were shuttled from Marcy Field. The state and town have had success managing the crowds when they know they’re coming, but the extra effort costs money, and crowd surges aren’t always easy to predict. Hikers have apps to chart things like weather and peak foliage, and tend to converge on the best days. Wilson said there are indications that attempts to beat the crowds are creating crowds of their own. “We had eight Mondays that were just as busy as Saturdays,” he said. ■

in general — need a website for people searching the Lake Champlain region for campgrounds. Board members acknowledged the need for greater web presence, and indicated the Regional Office for Sustainable Tourism might be willing to help. The campgrounds are already receiving some much needed attention, as students from BOCES have renovated a bathhouse with new flooring, showers and fixtures. The outside will be changed from concrete to an Adirondack-style log facade. “It will change the appearance of the whole area,” Scozzafava said. BOSES has also indicated it can build rental cabins for the town, which would attract more short-time visitors. Those tourists would be more likely to spend money in Port Henry restaurants and shops. The committee and board members also said a use needs to be found for the beach house on the Port Henry beach, perhaps as a sandwich shop or brew pub. Davenport said other matters for discussion would be a sandwich shop in the Bulwagga Bay campground, and a full time manager who would be responsible for booking and management of each.

IN OTHER MATTERS:

— Scazzafava said the town is

still wrestling with Canadian Pacific Railroad over the train depot, which is in need of a new roof at a cost of $140,000. The supervisor said the town would not be able to afford the cost, and could not legally do the work because it does not own the building. But he added there’s a chance that Amtrak — which believes it’s the most architecturally significant station on the line — might step in to do the work. — The town will begin discussions with National Grid about possibly replacing traditional streetlights with LEDs. Scozzafava said it would be a “substantial savings” to the town, which spends $80,000 annually on electricity for its 700 street lights. LEDs last longer and use less electricity. — Davenport said travelers arriving in town by rail are treated the the sight of junk-ridden properties when they step off the train, and asked if the town board members might be inclined to enforce laws against messy lots. Scozzafava said owners maintain the right to do with their properties as they pleased, but he entertained a motion from any board member for the town to step up its enforcement efforts against aesthetically challenged homeowners. No motion was forthcoming. ■

Salvation Army needs holiday bell ringers housing, utilities, medical bills, children’s camps, personal items and basic emergency needs for folks in the greater Ticonderoga community throughout the year. As in the past, they are partnering with the local Walmart by setting up Red Kettles for the Ticonderoga Service Unit from Nov. 29 until Dec. 24. Volunteer bell ringers are needed. The Army’s campaign is only successful when a good complement of volunteers show up to ring that bell. Individual volunteers can commit to as little as an hour at a time, but groups (churches, businesses, schools, scouts, etc.) can also coordinate to cover an entire day in shifts. The first time slots to be filled will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays starting Nov. 29. View

Each week we will publish a list of Death Notices at no charge. These notices will include name, date of death & birth, age, town and the name of the funeral home in charge of the arrangements. Like most newspapers, we do need to charge a small fee of $65 for a 250-word obituary which will include a picture (if supplied) in the paper. Larger sizes are also available. If the funeral home doesn’t place the obituary in The SUN you may submit an obituary by calling 518-873-6368, or you may email the Obituary to shannonc@suncommunitynews.com, and she will let you know the cost if it’s over 250 words.

Sealing the Diehl Game-ending INT for TD advances Vikings to state semifinal By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

SHENENDEHOWA | One of the most suspenseful games in NYSPHSAA tournament football culminated on the final play of the state quarterfinal game Nov. 16 between Moriah and Warrensburg-North Warren. With the game tied 22-22, Burgher quarterback Mac Baker took the day’s last snap on a fourth-down play — and with game-clock reading 0:00, he threw a pass which Burgher fans hoped would cap off a thrilling comefrom-behind effort by their team. The pass flew about 15 yards to the right sideline, where Burgher running back/receiver Jesse Griffin was expecting to receive it — but Moriah junior cornerback Matt Diehl jumped in front of him, leaped into the air and picked off the pass — then charged down the sideline to score the game-winning touchdown, collapsing at the goal post for a minute or so. Recovering from stomach cramps after his touchdown run, Diehl described his feat. “I knew they were going to pass, because there was no time on the clock — they had to — so I caught the pass, made the cut and ran as hard as I could,” he said. “It was the best feeling ever to do it for my brothers.” With the 28-22 victory, Moriah, the state runner-up in 2018, now advances to the state Final Four. They are scheduled to play Tuckahoe Friday, Nov. 22, in a state semifinal to be held in Middletown at 5 p.m. Moriah senior Braden Swan played a key role in his team’s victory. After each team’s tough defense kept the game scoreless for most of the first quarter, Swan inspired the Viking offense with an 11-yard run with 28 seconds left, in which he charged through Burgher defenders for a touchdown, then repeated the feat for another two points. Early in the second quarter, Swan struck again, catching a throw from record-setting running back Maddox Blaise in an 11-yard pass play with 7:20 remaining.

This touchdown was the conclusion of a drive that started off with one of several surprises Moriah dished out to the Burghers — an onsides kick that the Vikings recovered. Baker answered the Viking’s early scoring later in the second stanza with a sweeping end run on a third-down conversion, and soon after he ran the ball with 4:21 on the clock to score on a nine-yard run, capped off with a two-point conversion via the ground by Jesse Griffin. Moriah coach Don Tesar then executed a clever ploy, reassigning Swan to serve as quarterback for a while. The move surprised Viking fans, who were soon pleased with Swan’s passes on-the-run — in what the Vikings said was his Swan’s first time on varsity playing the role. “We wanted to do something a little different that Warrensburg hadn’t seen, maybe spark us a little — it sparked us big in the second quarter and we were able to run the ball well,” he said. Swan struck again on the last play in the second quarter, taking the ball into the end zone on a five yard play with no time on the clock. Swan passed to Blaise for the conversion, and with the score at 22-8, it looked like Moriah had a durable lead. Tesar said that the Burghers had fought hard in response to his team’s changing lineup. “Warrensburg made some adjustments at halftime, and it stopped us until our last play of the game,” he said. The Burghers indeed regrouped in the second half, after an inspirational halftime talk from coach Mike Perrone. He had told his players, “Execute, and you’ll come out on top,” and the players achieved a remarkable rebound. Three-plus minutes into the third quarter, Baker passed to Tanner “Big Dog” Dunkley, who ran into the endzone for a 17-yard touchdown, reducing the Burghers’ deficit to 22-14. Several minutes later, the two teams exchanged fumbles: Tristen Hitchock recovered the first for the Burghers, and a minute later, Blaise recovered the latter for Moriah. In the fourth quarter, the Burghers cranked up their passing game, as Baker shook off attacking defenders on a fourth-down play and threw 10 yards or so to Andrew Beadnell, who ran into the endzone for a 33-yard touchdown, with the two-point conversion good with a pass to Dylan Winchell to tie the score

In the stunning conclusion to the state Class D quarterfinal matchup between Moriah and Warrensburg-North Warren,Vikings Linebacker Matt Diehl cuts in front of Burgher receiver Jesse Griffin, and leaps to catch the ball, which he ran 85 yards for a touchdown with the game-clock expired to break a 22-22 tie and win the battle for his team. 22-22 with 1:45 on the clock. Several plays later, Hitchcock intercepted a pass at midfield, but this Burgher drive met up with Moriah’s re-energized defense. With about two minutes left, the Burghers displayed their determination — with a drive from their 15-yard line to the Moriah 24, featuring several long runs from Griffin, including a 41-yard dash. Final attempts by the Burghers to win the game included a pass which Diehl batted down, shortly before his game-winning interception, which prompted screams and cheers from the Moriah crowd. Jesse Griffin was named Outstanding Offensive Player of the game, and his brother Jared was named the Outstanding Defensive Player. Blaise was named Outstanding Offensive Player for Moriah, and Swan was received the title for top defensive player for the Vikings. Perrone said he and his assistant coaches were “extremely proud” of their players.

“Midway in the game, nothing was going our way — the onside kick, an interception that went through our hands, and the next play they score on a touchdown,” the coach said. “Anything that could go wrong, did go wrong.” Perrone said his players responded by making the ultimate effort. “Lesser men would have given up. At halftime, I said, ‘don’t quit, things will bounce our way,’ and we clawed and scratched back,” he said. “Our players gave everything they had, tying it up at 22-22, but unfortunately that kid made a great play at the end — our players did an outstanding job. “Kudos to Moriah — they’re a great program, and they fought tough.” Tesar in turn praised the Burghers. “Warrensburg was outstanding, they didn’t give up,” he said. “Defensively, they were very tough. (Tristen Hitchcock) played an outstanding game for them — he took everything that came at him. Warrensburg played hard. We expected them to be tough up front and they were. It was a great game.” ■

Glicksman earns state top 10 finish in D By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

PLATTSBURGH | While Saranac Lake was winning their second state championship in as many years, several other local athletes had strong days at the NYSPHSAA boy’s state cross country championships Nov. 16 at the Plattsburgh State Field House. In the Class D race, Seton Catholic’s Jake Glicksman finished ninth overall, while the Moriah/Boquet Valley team placed fifth overall with 131 points, behind Class D champion Beaver River. “I was very pleased with our performance,” said M/BV coach Howard Hammonds. “We were on the big stage for the first time with a very young team, only one senior being Logan. Most of the guys ran a little better than at qualifiers, which is good because it’s not uncommon to let down after reaching a major goal especially with young athletes. The boys are starting to really talk up indoors and the

prospects for the future with everyone but Logan coming back. My hope is this inspires other students to consider running.” Glicksman’s time of 15:35.1 was just over a minute off the pace of winner Kal Lewis of Shelter Island, while the Goats’ Logan VanBuren had a top 20 finish, placing 16th in 15:50.2. “Congrats to our Brothers at Saranac Lake on their win,” said Hammonds. “Because of their win Logan gets an invite to the Fed championships next week. Another competition against best of the best in the state.” Mike Skutt of Lake Placid crossed the line in 22nd, while Luke Moore (Seton) was 32nd, Sam DeJordy (Seton) 37th. Emery Tausinger Moriah/Boquet Valley’s Logan VanBuren placed 16th in the NYSPHSAA Class D championship race.

CAMPBELL TOP C AT-LARGE RUNNER

Ian Campbell of Plattsburgh High was the top finisher for Class C from the at-large field, finishing in 45th in a time of 16:11.6. Northeastern Clinton’s Thomas Gilbo placed 61st overall, while Andrew Woodruff (Saranac) was 66th, Sam Carter (Saranac) 70th and Spencer Daby (AuSable Valley) 75th among 132 Class C runners. In Class B, Beekmantown placed 11th in the overall team scores, led by Connor Goodwin’s 100th place finish in 17:15.4. Alexander Barber placed 113th for the Eagles, followed by Riley Loughan in 115th, Bode Curilla in 116th, Nathan Sand in 118th, Devan Bibeau in 119th and Elijah Magiera in 122nd with 132 runners in the Class B race. ■

Woodruff scores top 10 finish at state meet By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

PLATTSBURGH | For the second year, Saranac harrier Rachael Woodruff finished among the best runners in Class C at the NYSPHSAA cross country championships, held Nov. 16 at Plattsburgh State. A year after placing fourth in the state meet, Woodruff ran the Field House course in 17:22.8, placing seventh overall, having been projected eighth in one of the most competitive fields in the girls races (Classes A-D). “I’m really happy with my result,” said Woodruff. “Class C was really competitive this year and I really just wanted to put myself in a good position, I held onto the top group through the first two miles so I was very happy with how I was able to hang on and push through the race. I felt it was a very good race and I have no regrets.” For Woodruff, the race gave her two top 10 finishes out of her five trips to the state championships, including the chance to finish her high school cross country career on a home course. “It has been so special to come to states each year and then to have it at Plattsburgh in my senior year was very special,” she said. “I have enjoyed every trip and I never take it for granted and make sure I compete to my best.” Woodruff and the Chiefs placed 10th in the team standings, as Gillian Miner placed 92nd, Danielle Borner 96th, Mackenzie Converse 99th, Angelena Fay 100th, Molly Denis 102nd and Kaelyn Fay 105th. AuSable Valley senior Lily Potthast was just outside the top

20 in the Class C race, placing 21st in the class. Sara Crippen of Peru placed 79th, while Katie Samperi (Saranac Lake) was 85th, Nora Graves (Plattsburgh High) 86th and Gwen Mader (Saranac Lake) 108th.

MCKIERNAN TOP D RUNNER

Section VII/Class D individual champion Sophia McKiernan of Moriah/Boquet Valley placed 37th overall in the state race with a time of 19:29.6, the top sectional finisher in the class. “Sophia ran an exception race,” said M/BV coach Howard Hammonds. “This is her first season of cross country and she has adapted well to it. When in a race against one of the top five in the country it can be intimidating, but she performed just like she was born for it and she is.” Lea DeJordy of Seton Catholic placed 50th overall, with sister Savannah placing 53rd and teammate Faline Yang 67th. Kathryn Morgan of Ticonderoga placed 89th. Sectional champion Lake Placid placed eighth among Class D teams, as Harley Cohen placed 52nd, Alexa Harper 83rd, Anya Morgan 84th, Kelly Le 85th, Anissa Schmeil 101st and Erin Roth 107th.

BEEKMANTOWN COMPETES IN CLASS B

The Eagles placed 12th in the Class B race, as Mikayla Hamel was the top finisher in 106th. Kayler Grizzle placed 112th, while Alice Saliba was 118th, Raelin Ko 120th and Phoebe Eldredge 122nd. ■ Moriah/Boquet Valley’s Sophia McKiernan was the top finisher among Section VII girls in the NYSPHSAA Class D race Nov. 16 at the Plattsburgh State Fieldhouse.
